Hey /tg, I could use your opinion on my next move in the campaign I'm playing.

The characters are my misanthropic, caustic Druid/Psion Tiefling and a friend's naive, happy-go-lucky Ranger Shifter, and the pair of us wandered into a mining community, just passing through when I started getting a lot of odd looks and comments from all the men who have stopped working to stare as we pass by.

A rather well-dressed guy for this dusty, arid environment comes up and immediately asks the Shifter how much he can buy "the slave" for, saying that they've been losing a lot of people in the mines lately and they could definitely use another pair of hands for work and... other things.

Shifter hasn't ever dealt with slavery before and goes, "She's not my slave, she's my friend."

Now my character wouldn't have gone all that far and called her a friend in turn, but even so it warmed her shriveled up black pit of a heart that the shifter didn't immediately ask, "so how much are we talking about?"
>>
>>24604445

Anyway I keep my mouth shut because if they're treating me like chattel, nothing I say is really going to help matters.

So letting her take the lead and do all the talking, she purchases some supplies from a dusty old guy who also offers to buy me and asks why my tail and horns haven't been docked, "Ya gotta break em', so you do".

It is at this point I start making, we-need-to-leave-right-goddamn-now gestures, but after a few days of trekking through this dry area has basically depleted our water supplies so we have to stop at the well and refill our waterskins.

For some reason, I let her go and draw the water from the well, and the instant she's occupied, a goliath and two humans come out of the shack and box me in.

They offer me some crude comments and engage in speculation about precisely how many ways they could ruin me and before they grab me.
>>
>>24604451
Yeah, your friend talked about this the other day from their standpoint just so you know
>>
Shapeshift into a bear right after they've lowered their pants and are about to rape you.
>>
>>24604451

Anyway, to make a short battle slightly shorter, I kill one guy with an augmented force punch and the shifter drops the other after finishing her verse with a well-placed arrow.

The goliath lets out a roar at seeing his friends killed and charges at me, screaming that I took them from him. I'd been able to dodge his attacks up until this point but he finally lands one and clotheslines me and starts punching me and smashing my head on the ground.

Before anything else happens, the well-dressed guy who first offered to buy me shows up and yells at the Goliath get up and explain himself, and he does but he's holding me by my hair up off the ground and I would have wild-shaped and eviscerated him into my panther form but a crowd has formed and I doubt that I could take them all on and I didn't want to play that card just yet.

Shifter friend runs over and tries to explain what happened, and overseer just says that the both of us have to go meet with the boss of the mining operation. We're basically marched at the head of the crowd over to the boss' place, but when I start to follow the shifter inside, the overseer says Tieflings aren't allowed in there.

Shifter doesn't want to leave me alone, but I tell her I think I can manage and she goes inside, leaving me surrounded by about twenty guys and that pissed off Goliath.
>>
>>24604445
Fuck yeah story time
>>
>>24604646

Thinking that things might go badly for my Shifter companion inside if I start Telekenitcally anchoring everyone, I stand there, arms crossed and glaring but after finding out the goliath's friends were killed, one human gets in my face and spits on me, saying that demons should keep their eyes down and shouldn't dare look humans in the face. I force push him back out of my face.

The overseer tries calling out for order but several of the humans start yelling about demon magic and rush me.

Several bad dice throws later, I've only managed to kill two guys when I try to break free and run but they fall on me like a wall of disgusting, unwashed, I-dig-holes-for-a-meager-wage force and they pin me to the ground and one of them kicks me in the back of the head and I'm out.

Exactly this: My Paladin was faced with a similar situation with a group of Half-Orc-haters who wanted to stone our Barbarian. (With the difference no violence had happened yet.)

Basically, he just said: "You have a rule about no Half-Orcs in, I have one about not leaving a friend to the mercy of a mob. As this symbol implies, I am willing to fight and die for my rules. Are you?"

One decent intimidation roll later, and the goon was screaming "Uh, boss? I think you'd better come down!"
>>
>>24604771

I wake a short time later, bound at the wrists and ankles, my tail tied at a painful angle to my leg and a filthy cloth stuffed in my mouth and tied around my head.

I'm being carried over the massive shoulder of the goliath. He tells the overseer that he's going to put me into a cell and make sure nothing too bad happens to me. Rather disinterested, the overseer yells at everyone else to get back to work, shrugs and tells the goliath his wages will be docked for the time he's going to spend guarding me.

I'm struggling but every time I thrash a bit the goliath slams his fist down onto my back, forcing all the air out of my lungs, so not wanting to suffocate, I settle for working at the cloth in my mouth with my sharp teeth.

So he walks for a good while through this disorganized mess of buildings and finally get to this awful smelling one. He has to duck to fit himself inside- scraping me against the doorframe and low ceiling and he turns and I can see four or five other cells and what looks like someone hunched over in one of them.

He walks over to the last one, which has a small table and a chair sitting outside of it, unlocks the door and heaves me inside the cell. I hit the wall hard and the floor harder, but he's not quite finished yet.

Closing the cell door behind him, he kicks me around a bit and I don't take much damage because they were more concerned with binding me than stripping me down so I'm still wearing my scale armor.

Then he slams me against the wall where there's this very, very small, barred window. "See out there, demon? You're gunna dance like you never danced before by dawn tomorrow if not sooner."

The gallows stand right outside this building.
>>
>>24604451
>but after a few days of trekking through this dry area has basically depleted our water supplies so we have to stop at the well and refill our waterskins.
Ooh, bad move. What you should have done was buy a room and start reinforcing the landing for the inevitable night attack.
>>
>>24604986
Yeah because you get to dictate what terms you'll talk under in a position like that. Are you serious?

Next, I bet you'll start talking about how this is unrealistic because you would have killed everyone there in your game no matter what level you were even if they happened to all be sentient tophat and monocle wearing Tarrasques.

>>24604993

>>
>>24605094

Then he knocks me back against the wall, slamming my head back hard enough for my vision to dim and he's stepping back outside the cell and slamming the door shut.

Then he takes a seat in the chair right across from the cell, turns it towards me and begins glaring at me. He used his entire body with that glare- it was unnerving so I roll over so my back is towards him and continue chewing on the rag in my mouth.

Taking stock, there's not much in the cell to help me. A very filthy bed of straw, that seems to be speckled with blood and an equally filthy bathroom bucket that seems like it hasn't been changed since the dawn of man.

At this point, if I grind my teeth together just a bit more I can cut the rags in my mouth and spit them out but it's clear at this point the goliath doesn't mean to leave and give me a chance to free myself.

So, I've got to give him a reason to leave. Even though it's probably going to hurt.

I used far-hand on the filth bucket and flung it open-end first at the front of the cell showering him with the rank, semi-solid filth.

Not to be mean or anything but you're making a lot of assumptions and I don't think your example really applies here.

It seems a little bit silly to expect what sounds like a relatively low leveled character (or else she could have fought her way out, no?) who happens to be an unarmed female of a race they actually possess slaves from to intimidate a crowd of a hundred humans and Goliaths. Even if she rolls high I doubt they'd.scatter like roaches or let her do as she pleases. It sounds like your paladin was able to back up his words with his strength if he had to. Unlike your paladin she actually tried it and clearly wasn't as strong as she thought she was.

Ya got me.
>>
>>24605259

My character got a cheap thrill at the shock on his face as that hazardous liquid waste caught him full in the face and down the front.

But it didn't last long as he jumped to his feet and started slamming his hands against the bars screaming, "Think that was funny, little demon?! Think your magic is gunna help?"

He's so furious it seemed he forgot he had the keys for a moment and just banged on the cell door some more before remembering, opening the door and stomping inside, slamming the door shut behind him.

Now, he's like 7'2. I'm 5'5 and tied up. I got hurt pretty bad.

He kicked me back against the wall, straddled me and punched me several times in the face. My mouth fills with blood and I start to choke. I fall over from one of the blows and he starts kicking me again, mostly going for my head.

This whole time, I'm trying to land some force punches to get him away from me because its the only ability I have where I don't need to be free to make use of, but I keep missing because of frequent head-kicks and only rattling the bars of the cell, and it's only making him more incensed and his attacks just keep coming.

Finally he kicks me over onto my stomach and stomps down on my tail, which was already bound at an odd angle.

There's a very loud, very clear CRACK sound.
>>
>>24605514
The more I hear about this the more I'm assuming this is 4e. As far as I know you're limited to one non-avian form that is permanent from character creation...I could be wrong though
>>
>>24605592
Ah well, I know jack shit about 4e druids so if that's the case I'll have to concede.
>>
>>24605459
Dude explicitly mentioned the ability to turn into a panther and has shown a few times that he can telekinesis multiple two hundred pound living bodies and on one occasion has shown the ability to toss a pail of waste through a grate
Though no players or their reactions have been mentioned, the framework of the scenario is that this is happening in someone's campaign. You can ask the game master if the towel-chokeout thing is a valid move if it isn't explicitly written down somewhere.

... Actually, what ruleset IS being used here?
>>
>>24605629
I'm going to go ahead and assume 4e cause:
-limited wild shape
-limited telekinetic strength

And since she's getting her ass kicked and missing what sounds like some form of attack she might not have even managed the strangling thing.
>>
>>24605562

I can't really move to see what he does next, but I hear him go over to the cell door and then I'm splashed with what I can only assume is whatever's left at the bottom of the bathroom bucket.

He slams the gate behind him and I hear him go down the aisle and exits the building, presumably to find a change of clothes.

I immediately bite through the blood-soaked rags and spit them out, and begin working on my bound wrists. My vision is swimming, I can feel blood leaking down the back of my neck and I'm growling as I work as if that will hold back the tears.

I'm struggling to figure out what I'm going to do next. My panther form is the only one I have and even that won't help me get out of the cell. I wouldn't be able to fit my head through the tiny window, let alone the rest of my body even if it wasn't barred. The only way out is if I get the key from him.

Several minutes have passed. I just freed my hands and had just started untying my ankles when I hear a door close and the sound of a pair of heavy, footsteps.

I quickly stuff some of the rags back into my mouth and turn my back towards the cell door.

Whoever it is, I hear the sound of a chair scraping against the floor and they sit down. When they speak, I recognize it as the Goliath.

>>
>>24605397

Well we were ow level too, and violence would probably have meant TPK at that point, but yeah, my Paladin was a man of principle, and what's more, if they managed to separate us and still wanted to become violent, then they would have had an even easier time taking us out separately. Hence, I verbally drew the proverbial line in the sand.

Now, in retrospect I admit I kinda went a bit Lawful Stupid there, luckily the guy who played the Orc managed to defuse the whole situation with a nice act of "dumb but not stupid" barbarian roleplaying.

"We've been here five god-damn years, me and Javan, Lekki. We've been down in those mines together, always together and we always came out in one piece. Even when people started getting attacked and people started not coming back, we stayed together-"

One of the other prisoners makes some kind of noise and the Goliath breaks off to tell him to shut up. His voice hardens when he speaks again. "They didn't deserve to die like that. I didn't deserve to see it."

I'm thinking that this whole unpleasant incident could have been avoided if they had left me alone, but it's obvious he's already re-written the history to suit his fancy.

Right after that, he changed tacks. He explains that my friend got sent down into the mines to see if she couldn't figure out what the hell was causing all the chaos down there, and that the only reason they're not presently fitting my neck for the noose is that they're keeping me as bit of insurance. He doesn't expect her to make it out.

All this time, I'm subtly working on the ropes on my ankles and I nearly got it untied. Keeping hands and ankles together, I turned slightly towards him and used force punch and he gets slammed back against the wall and the chair breaks beneath him. He gets to his feet and fumbles for the key to cell, shaking with rage.

"I kept giving you chances, demon! You keep taking them and taking them and now I'm gunna take my chances with you!"
>>
when does the rape start
>>
>>24605997

So he stomps in, already pulling at his breeches and trying to kick me onto my back.

I spit out the bloody rags, throw out a hand and use Frost Flash.

The blast of cold hits him full in the face and chest, freezing it solid and making him fall down. I roll onto my feet and kick him in his exposed privates several times, before grabbing the ropes that had bound me and begin tying him up.

This whole time, he's turning quite blue from the lack of air. He's still thrashing around and it's difficult for me to keep a hold on him and tie some good knots. The spell begins to weaken and he smashes his head against the wall and breaks the ice and starts yelling for help.

I smash his head against the wall several times until he goes all quiet and still and then I finish tying him up. Then I take the bloody rags and stuff them into his mouth and tie a last bit of rope around his head to keep it there.

I listen for a bit but the other prisoner seems to be minding his own business and it doesn't sound like anyone outside heard the disturbance.

I search him and find the key to the cell and kick all the filthy straw all over him before stumbling dizzily out into the hall.

The other prisoner might make noise, might draw attention. I decide to kill him to keep him quiet and approach the cell- all the others between his and mine are empty. “Give me one reason why I shouldn’t kill you-” I start and then stop. It’s another Tiefling. He looks little more than a skeleton, he's so emaciated and his horns have been broken off.

Now my character doesn’t like other people much. At all, really. She usually keeps away from most settlements for that reason. She can barely stand the Shifter girl, and they’ve been through a few ordeals together by this time and she’s come to have a grudging respect and fondness for her. But Tieflings, Tieflings are different.

He tells me that there’s only about three other tieflings here, four including himself and that the females are kept separate- they don’t work in the mines. I ask him if there’s any place nearby where we could hide and when he says yes, he knows of a place behind a storage house that’s a bit out of the way and shouldn’t have much foot-traffic.

I tell him that I’ll let him out but I won’t hesitate to kill him if he alerts anyone that I’m with him.

I find his pitiful gratitude disgusting as he comes out of the cell but hold my tongue. I tell him to arm himself and when he goes over to the overturn table and broken chair and wrenches off a leg, I see that his tail has been hacked off very close to the base.

My breath catches in my throat. “I am so sorry.” And I mean it.

>>
>>24606469

Free the slaves, run as a distraction!
>>
>>24606371

We sneak outside and it's still daylight but coming on towards evening.

Everything in me tells me to get out of here, to run. To wild shape into a panther form and just never stop running. All the men milling around, carting around rocks, they would probably be too shocked to try and stop me.

I remember the Shifter and swat the thought of her away like a mosquito- she was the one who wanted to come here, to ask after her missing master. If I could escape, so could she. I'm younger than her, she's not my responsibility.

But then I look at the Tiefling and grit my teeth. I'm a daughter of Bael Turath. There's no way I'm leaving a tiefling to rot in a place like this.

So we're sneaking around the edges of these other buildings and to his half-starved credit he's keeping really quiet and stealthy like and so far I don't have to make good on my threat.

Then I hear the voice of the overseer in the building we're behind. He's saying that if the Shifter doesn't come out within the hour, they'll have a hanging before dinner. Someone volunteers to run off and tell "Gat" the good news.

Then a pair of humans come around the corner as we came to it and stop dead in their tracks.

The male tiefling makes good use of the broken chair leg and bashes one of them over the head, and I force punch the second one, blowing them both back against the wall with a rather loud thud. They both die.

The male tiefling whispers that the storehouse is just around the corner and that if we leave the bodies here we'll be found out. So we half-drag, half-carry them until we get there, pry open a massive barrel and stuff the two bodies inside.

I turn to him and explain that I'm trying to decide whether to run away or burn this whole settlement down but that he should probably run away in case I decide on the latter.

He tells me that he doesn't want to leave his brother and the girls.

"Girls?"

He explains that the boss of the place had started a sick sort of eugenics project and would frequently make the tieflings have sex, usually while mostly chained up and with an audience. He says that he doesn't even know their names.

I busy myself with wrapping my poor, broken tail and try and figure out how to fix the situation. I don't know what mine the Shifter went down into, so I think my best bet would be to hope she gets out on her own. As for the tieflings...

I burn some ritual components and do an animal messenger ritual and have the tiefling send a message to his brother, telling him to get the hell out of dodge. Then I tell him that I'll go free the female tieflings myself and tell him he should get out of here, too.

I tell him where my family lives and that if he can get to them, they should be able to help him out.

So he runs off and just as he vanishes from view, an alarm bell starts ringing.

I'm kinda upset that everyone wants her to abandon the shifter. She defended her didn't she? She doesn't deserve to hang anymore than the tiefling does

Nah, he wasn't saying to abandon her. He was saying to let her be in the mines for the moment, and go after whoever is responsible for this mess!
>>
>>24607287

Abandoning the shifter is kind of the best option. There's no clue as to where she is, and the entire fucking place is dangerous as hell. Searching for her would likely be suicide.
>>
>>24607337
But think about the character dynamic! She was a dick, but she warms up to her companion. That's always the audience's favorite! Think of Han Solo!
>>
>>24607058

So the first thing I do is climb up onto the roof of the storage house and wildshape. And then I start watching and listening as the humans run around in search of me.

The male tiefling had no idea where the females were, so I'm waiting a while until two humans nearly run into each other and start comparing notes about the missing slave and whether or not the other has check on the others. Then they run off in different directions.

I mark the direction the first human went in and follow the second by running and jumping on the rooftops. It's full on dark at this point. I follow the the human to one small shack and crouch around the edge of the building he's only inside for a few seconds before he bursts out shouting, "Amnon's gone too and sprinting off towards the road.

So it seems the brother got the message, too. I head back in the direction I came and get back onto the rooftops and head in the direction I saw the other man go.

At first I thought it was hopeless, but as I kept walking I saw that the path the man had been running on was well worn and lead to a large, barn-like building.

I shift back into human form, sneak up to the door and open it, rolling for stealth.
>>
>>24607367
Or she doesn't warm up to the shifter, leaves her, and gets the fuck out of dodge and lives. The shifter will hang. Nothing we can do about that. It's not like she's doing it to spite her.

I fail, and the door creaks loudly as I slip inside. I suppose it wouldn't have mattered if I had succeeded because two men were dragging two older, female tieflings towards the door.

A fight ensues. Seeing no way around it, I apologize to the female tiefling being held by the man on the left and frost flash the pair of them, sort of freezing them together before turning my attention to the two on the right.

The tielfing female manages to break free, runs and tries to meld with the wall in the corner and the man runs at me, takes a swing and misses. With a force punch to the face, he goes down, out cold.

Unfortunately for the frozen tiefling, she'd been unable to free herself from the human in the interim, so when the spell wears off and the ice weakens he grabs her again and and threatens to kill her if I take a step towards them.

I don't see a weapon on him but I'm inclined to believe him as I stall for time.
>>
>>24607643

I look around and notice at the back end of the barn there is two open cages and it doesn't take much to figure out what sort of place this is, with the long tables and chairs and bar in the back.

A part of me is thinking I can still get the one in the corner out and that 3/4 saved tielfings is a job well done all things considered but I only entertain the thought for a moment.

I sit down on the ground and start removing my armour. "Let her go, and take me instead." When I'm down to my clothes, I put my hands behind my head.

He approaches cautiously, shifts behind me and tosses the female aside and puts an arm across my throat and something cold and sharp just to the left of my spine.

A shard of ice.

When I move to break free I succeed at the athletics check, though he still manages to stab me. Then I force punch him twice, breaking both his jaw and his neck.

Remembering the other man is only unconscious, I run over to him, then hesitate and address the female tieflings. "Is there any reason I shouldn't kill this guy?"

Both females are now standing together and they look as awful as the other male did. Their horns looked as though they had been sawed off and their tails had also been docked far too close to the base of their spine. Both of them shake their heads in unison.

So I force punch the unconscious one dead and fill them in on the situation while I put my armour back on. While they're dragging the humans into the cages and locking them inside, it's then that I realize that one of them is obviously pregnant.

"Do you know who-?" I cut off the question before I can finish. It doesn't matter, not really anyway. If they manage to escape and survive, the child will still be a tiefling.

Feeling very awkward- how else do I reference the males whose names they don't know and who mounted them by force with a jeering human audience- I tell them that the male tieflings had already escaped and that I'd been asked to try and help them. After grabbing some improvised weapons, we sneak outside and I climb up onto one of the buildings and try and figure out the quickest way of escape for them.

We're not far from a long expanse of dry, sun-hardened dirt but there is a familiar looking building- I realize that it's boss' place.

My first priority is getting these two a good head start out of here, but I know where I'm heading next.

We sneak through the streets and past several empty- one room shacks. It seems that the initial mad- search has died down or spread to other areas. We have a few close calls but no more fights occur.

At the edge of the settlement, I tell the females where my family lives and that if they can find them, they'll help them out. They thank me profusely and run off.

I watch until they vanish from view, then I wildshape and sneak up to the boss' house.

Someone has left the door ajar. I sneak inside and hear a familiar voice- the Goliath. He swears that he's going to find me and hang me and the boss tells him to see himself out.

I hide in an unoccupied room until he leaves and slowly creep in to have an audience with the boss.
>>
>>24608352

He's in a small but very well furnished room. At the end of a table piled high with food, the man seems to be working his way through the table's content with gusto. He's younger than I would have expected but corpulent.

I successfully sneak under the table and get eye-level with his knees.

One moment, he's very nosily and sloppily eating a meal fit for five and the next, pain is radiating up through his body from his legs. He lets out a high shriek of pain and topples backwards.

I leap onto him, upending the table and pinning him to the ground with my paws.

Then, with a successful dice roll, I transform just my head back to it's tiefling like-ness. "Hi."

His screams were delicious, but I didn't permit him to make many of them.

>>
>>24608522

So after making a bloody mess him, I search around his quarters and don't find anything important and leave.

There's no one in the immediate area outside.

Now that I gave the tieflings a good a chance as any to get out, why don't I do the same?

I'd very much welcome the chance to kill Gat the Goliath, my tail and head paining me terribly as a reminder. Would that be worth staying? Would the chance to burn the whole settlement down, was that worth not coming out of it alive?

And then there's the Shifter. She's probably dead by now- the overseer had written her off- and if dozens of men haven't gotten out of there no one's been able to get to the bottom of it, why should she be any different.

But what if she wasn't? Could I live with myself if didn't even try to find out what happened to her?

The wind picks up and carries the sound of a lot of excited voices. Conflicted, I reluctantly keep to the shadows, padding past the many empty shacks before hiding in an alley near the main street.

"-but she's not talking any sense. She's all covered in stuff as black as ink and screaming that we all need to run, that there's thousands of creatures down there."

"Where'd they take her, to the boss?"

The overseer's voice rings out. "No, Gat and a few others put her in the cell. I'll inform him of her reappearance in the morning. Then we will hang her at first light. The slaves are gone and at least four men have gone missing- the tiefling's work, no doubt. She'll pay for it all herself."
>>
>>24608857

And that's where we left off last night.

To answer some questions. Yes we're playing 4e,and yes there were some horrendously failed rolls at the beginning.

To try and save her or turn tail and run seems like a ridiculously silly question after all this, but she's only known the shifter for three weeks, less than a month really.

In addition, Nerissa herself isn't exactly a powerhouse of death. Depending on what happens next, it'd be an easy thing to get overpowered and then they're both going to be dancing several feet below that dusty little stage.

She also doesn't like the sound of, "thousands and thousands of creatures down below".

Its pretty much a five cell shack they use to punish and detain some of the workers. Its not too big so it doesn't take many men to guard it. I may have killed something like 8 guys, but they have a lot more where that came from. They had a lot of men to begin with.

I don't think the Shifter really had a choice in the matter as to going down into the mine.

On the other thread, it seems the boss gave the Shifter an ultimatum- go down into the caves and try and figure things out, or both you and the tiefling end up being morale boosters for the men.
>>
Shifter's player here. Nerissa's player called me and told me to get on.

For those who didn't guess, I talked about my naive, happy-go-lucky Longtooth Shifter Ranger, Glacia a few weeks ago and how she got beat up and fell 100 feet and broke her arm.

To condense what's happened so far: After recovering from that (its been just over a month since that excruciating fall), she returned to her journey southward in search of her swordtraining master. She's in love with him and he abandoned her in the middle of a five year mentorship without explanation and told her to go home. Naturally, she decides to follow him or at least try and get in contact with his clan. Along the way, she picked up Nerissa, who had been in the habit of scaring passersby with her panther form. Naturally, she got a kick out of scaring Glacia every chance she got. They've completed at least one major "quest" together as Glacia works her way southward and for the most part, they haven't gotten on each other's nerves.
>>
Oh, look what I found, Glacia's first adventure... if you can call it that.

More like an episode of "I Shouldn't Be Alive."

http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/24398393/#p24410737
>>
>>24610680
So you all know what happened up until Nerissa gets bagged and taken away, while Glacia is given her ultimatum, so I'll start from there.

So this grossly fat man is just sitting at his table as he tells me all this, looking awfully disinterested for just being told about the death of two of his workers.

I honestly hadn't meant to kill one of the men who were assaulting Nerissa but it appeared the arrow had nicked something vital and he was dead just the same. This is the first time I've killed another person.

Overwhelmed with guilt, not only for killing the poor man but for getting Nerissa into this situation, I agree to find what's been going on down in the mines. I owe her everything in my power to make sure she gets out of this safe and sound.

The fat man just grunts and waves a hand at me dismissively and I turn to leave. Outside, there are a few men lying on the ground, bleeding, but before I can say anything, the overseer comes and tells me he will be the one escorting me to the mineshaft entrance.

I ask what happened to Nerissa and he gestures to the clearly injured men.

"Your friend was a little too violent for her own good. She has been...detained for now. Do not worry, no harm will befall her if you can complete the task given you."

I'm not happy, but I can't very well do anything about it in this situation. I have to hurry and get back before they hurt her somehow. The worst image I can think of–her getting her face beat in by the big Goliath–crosses my mind.

All I can do is growl in frustration and I bear my teeth, first to the overseer and then to the men gathered around us. Its something seen as childish and immature among my clan and akin to cursing.

"If she has a single out of place mark on her..."

The crowd of men look appalled at the display but the overseer gives me a disapproving look and shouts for them all to get back to work before folding his arms behind his back and walking off.

"Follow me."
>>
Nerissa, what you value more, being alive or that warm and fuzzy feeling when you reflect on things that you dun good?

RUN AWAY!
>>
>>24611062
He leads me to a very, very dark cave entrance and stops there.

"If you have any questions, this would be the time."

I think about it for less than a second and blurt out the first thing that comes to my mind.

"You say that men are disappearing. Not a single one has ever come back?"

"I'm afraid we didn't quite tell you the entire story. The men come back...but never in one piece."

I don't like the sound of that and I feel like I'll regret asking what he means but I do anyway.

"Sometimes men come back missing arms, legs, even their heads. Sometimes their bodies are grotesquely swollen. More often than not, we do not find their bodies at all."

Ooookay. This is quickly beginning to seem like something way beyond my capabilities. But I see Nerissa in my head again and for a moment, my guilt is stronger than my common sense.

"Is there anything else I need to know?"

The overseer nods and squats in the dirt, drawing something with his finger.

"The main tunnel here runs straight for close to a mile. Its a relatively new tunnel so there it comes to an abrupt end. In between, there are several branches that circle and lead back to the main tunnel that are used for the carters to collect the ore."

He draws the diagram in the dirt and I try to imprint it in my mind's eye. Its simple enough, but I've never been good with things like this so I stare at it for a good few minutes. The overseer waits patiently the entire time.

"Okay. I think I've got it."

"Good." He says and steps back so I can enter the tunnel. I get the feeling that he isn't a man of many words.

I step forward and peer into the entrance. Its about twice as high as I am tall and its dark for as far as I can see. I open my pack, retrieve my flint and steel and a torch. I manage to get the torch lit and with one last look back at the overseer, I start inward.

I don't make it very far inside before the only sounds are my own footsteps, the jingling of the contents of my pack, and my heavy breathing. I stop for a moment and strain my hearing but I can no longer hear the shouting and working of the men outside. I lift the torch a little higher and head on.

Further in, I swear I hear something skittering in the dark and my breath catches in my throat. I remember the eye-covered tentacle...thing I had faced in the darkness at the bottom of the chasm. I start to feel a little sick with the memory and I quicken my pace.

I end up at the first crossroads and after a moment of indecision, decide to take the left one. I take the path slowly and cautiously, but the trek through the hallway turns out to be ultimately uneventful. I find myself back in the main tunnel.

Of course, there's the other path ahead of me, but it'll essentially be backtracking. I silently debate the chances of finding anything this early on a side tunnel over continuing onward. I convince myself that it would be easiest to keep going and that I could always come back and check this one on the way on the return trip.

So I continue onward and I catch a whiff of something. The smell is acrid and bitter and its not very strong, but it is a bit disconcerting.

What IS that?

At the next pair of crossroads, I take the left passage and arrive at what looks like a cave in. I smell that weird scent again and decide that this is a good enough a place as any to start seriously investigating.

I start climbing over some of the boulders and squeezing through the gaps between them. I get stuck and I end up tearing open my forehead on some of the sharp rocks jutting from the wall as I struggle to get free. I eventually manage to get out of the narrow crevice, still holding the torch, and I find myself in a small, narrow cavern that clearly isn't man made. The sharp smell from before is replaced by the deep, earthy smell of fresh-turned dirt.

I take a few steps forward to investigate and the ground moves beneath my feet. I struggle to keep my balance but whatever moved beneath me rears up and I'm thrown to the wall and I drop my torch.

In the half-darkness of the flickering torch, it looks like everything is moving at once. The floor, the walls, the ceiling. Everything. As I struggle to my feet, I notice that whatever it is that's moving has blocked the exit too.

Seeing the torch is very close to going out, especially with all the dirt being thrown around, I reach back to my pack and pull my last sunrod from its strap and light it.

The first thing I notice is legs. Dozens and dozens of legs. Whatever it is that I had disturbed was pulling itself out of the ground and coiling around the outside of the room.

After what seems like an eternity, the thing–whatever it is–rears up its head and stares me in the face. Its insectoid in nature with razor sharp mandibles twice as thick as my arm. Its body is as thick as a tree trunk.

It swings its massive head at me and unable to do anything else, I dive out of the way. Dropping the sunrod, I roll to my feet and draw both my swords, hacking at it desperately.

It pulls back and charges at me again. This time, I'm not fast enough to get out of the way and it pins me to the wall between its mandibles and I lose my grip on one of my swords. I start flailing and slashing, but the armor around its head seems too thick to cut through.

It raises me higher and higher, squeezing me tighter and tighter until I can't breathe. I feel something give way in my chest with a pop and a burst of pain and in distress, I pull my sword back as far as I can and stab it in one of its beady black eyes.

I yank my sword back out and it rears back in pain, spraying me with black ichor and dropping me in the process.

I fall and bounce off the ground, hurting my chest some more in the process, and scramble towards the glint in the dirt that I assume is my sword as the creature slams itself against the walls.

Chunks of rocks fall from the ceiling, hitting the creature as well as me. I grab my other sword and start into a twisting, complex technique I learned from my master. I whirl my blades, cutting off as many legs as I can reach. The creature thrashes in pain and in one clean motion DIVES into the ground.

The act of burrowing flings dirt up and over my sunrod and suddenly I'm in complete darkness again. As its digging, its body is following its head into the hole and the circling motion batters me around and knocks me the ground.

I'm left alone in darkness, spitting rocks and dirt out. I start sifting through the soil, trying to hopefully uncover the sunrod. Just as I find it, the creature bursts from the wall and sweeps its massive head and neck across the room, colliding with my side and sending me flying.

The creature starts pulling itself from the wall but I'm hunched in on myself, my chest radiating pain. I feel like I might have hit my head a few too many times too.

I struggle to get up and just barely manage to do so as the creature comes at me again. I twist and barely manage to avoid its attack and bring my full power to bear on its face.

My first slash cuts deep into one of the mandibles and the second removes it entirely. It sprays more of its disgusting smelling blood all over me and I notice for the first time that it tingles where it touches my skin. It swings its head but I'm ready for it this time and after I dodge, I drive my sword into the softer hide under its throat.

I'm instantly drenched in the creature's blood as I withdraw the swords and prepare for another blow but it jerks and then starts to fall over. I try to dodge out of the way, but a section of its massive body lands on my leg.

After a few tries, I manage to free myself from under the thing. I hesitantly feel my leg. It hurts but otherwise, seems to be unbroken.

The small room is near dark again because the stupid beast fell onto my sunrod. It doesn't cover it completely so I start to shoulder it off of it but the pain in my chest causes my to double over. What could hurt that badly? Did I break a rib?

In the half-light, I grab some rope from my bag and wrap it around my chest as tight as possible to hopefully keep whatever I broke in place.

Just as I finish, I hear a skittering sound. I freeze. From the exit, another, smaller version of the creature skitters over the bigger one. This one isn't as strong or well armored as its contemporary and though it manages to slice through the leather armor and into my left arm, I return the favor by hacking it to pieces.

Exhausted and hurting, I manage to push the larger creature off the sunrod enough to retrieve it before I climb over its carcass and out of the tiny cavern.

Surely these two were what was killing the men? Now I can go back and get Nerissa and we can get out of here and...

As soon as I make it back to the main tunnel, the acrid smell hits me again, much stronger this time, from deeper inward.

And then the thought hits me like a rock: What if there weren't only two of those things here? Would they keep Nerissa and I detained until they made sure no more men were getting killed? What would happen to us if I didn't finish off the rest of them? COULD I even finish off the rest of them?

I groan and lean back against the stone wall, taking a short rest.

Well, no choice. Have to keep moving.
>>
>>24615970
So I keep heading down the main shaft. I get to the next pair of crossroads but ignore them and go deeper.

After a little while, the acidic smell gets so strong that I begin to feel a little light headed. I rip off a piece of cloth from my clothing underneath my armor and tie it around my face. It helps a little.

The relatively level path turns into a steep slope as I pass some kind of pool of water. The smell is getting stronger yet so I don't stop to investigate. Just as I reach the bottom of the slope, the ground crumbles and I fall.

The fall is only a few seconds, but I can't help but scream and remember the huge fall into that chasm a few months ago. I bounce off of something not quite hard and roll across the ground.

My sunrod clatters to the ground next to me and yet another abomination unfolds in front of me. This time, I recognize it as a millipede, having seen them before. Though this one had to be hundreds, no, thousands of times bigger than a normal millipede. Some kind of liquid dripped between its jaws.

Faster than I could ever hope to match, the thing lunges at me and sinks its jaws into my shoulder. Its mandibles slice clear through my leather armor and into my right shoulder. The pain is incredible.

I scream and slash at it, trying to get it off of me and barely manage to wound it with my wild swinging. My shoulder is on fire.

I immediately move into one of the stances I trained in with master, one that would allow me to hit hard and be able to duck away from attacks. But between my bruised and/or rib and my shoulder, I fumble the blow and it only makes the giant millipede angrier. As the battle wears on, I'm finding it harder and harder to remember my training.
>>
>>24616342
Eventually, the millipede lunges and bites me just around the same place on my shoulder and the pain is so intense I go half mad with it. I can feel my claws and teeth getting longer as I shift. I forget all my training, my wounds, Nerissa. I forget that the swords in my hands are cutting weapons and not just clubs.

With savage strokes, I slash the millipede into submission and even after it lays still, I don't stop there. I hack and I hack and I hack until it lays in pieces around me. Until its nothing but a ruined mess. Until I can't tell if I'm screaming with rage or crying.

I eventually come back to my senses covered in the gore from the thing. All the pain comes rushing back at once and I collapse. With careful fingers, I try to pry off my armor to take a look at the wound on my shoulder. The pain is so bad I double over and throw up. Under the armor, my shoulder is swollen and purple and the veins are almost black in color.

I slowly try to put the armor back on and it only causes more retching. I get up and look for a way to possibly get back up from this hole. There's a rock at the top that juts out just enough for me to consider it.

I get some more rope from my bag and tie a rock to the end of it. I spin it to gain momentum before throwing it up as hard as I can. It bounces directly off the face of the rock and falls back down at my feet.

I start to sob but pick it up and begin to try again. Despite my vision being blurred by tears, I manage to get it over the edge of the rock. I let the rope fall down on the other side enough to make a crude pulley and tie it to one of the larger rocks here on the bottom.

Its slow, painful work but I just barely manage to get myself up to the top and over the edge. Having terrible luck with falling into things, I scramble away from the edge.

I lie on my back on for my moment, trying to catch my breath, but the acidic smell is so strong now I think I might puke again.

Oh, yeah. It gets a bit hard as fights drag on (especially if you or the monster fails to hit several times in a row) but I love going, "Yeah, now the broken point of your femur's poking out through your thigh. Do a save to see if you pass out from shock."

In addition to the smell, there was a strange fluttering sound like wind coming from somewhere.

I pull the sunrod from my mouth and hold it up just enough to see a hole just big enough for me to fit through and the sounds were coming from it.

Thinking that it might somehow be a message from the gods or something, I start to squeeze myself into it. After I'm a few feet in, I'm pulling myself along by my good arm so fast that I don't notice when the ground takes a sharp dip and I start slipping down the slope.

I'm desperately trying to stop myself but I had too much momentum and I slide all the way down and out onto some sort of ledge. I'm about half an inch from the edge and unsure if moving will put me over it.

I slowly turn my head and look over the edge of the ledge to see, to my horror, what exactly was making that noise.

Far, far below me, amidst faintly glowing mushrooms are thousands and thousands of rushing creatures. I can't quite make them out, but between the smell pervading the cavern and the smell of the millipede's innards all over me, my imagination fills in all the pieces just fine for me. It was like I had stumbled into Asmodeus' personal menagerie.

This is the final straw for me. I scramble over on to my stomach and accidentally kick a rock over the edge and down below. Somehow, through all that racket those things were making, they all hear it, stop and turn to look up at me.

I turn and start scrabbling up the inclined tunnel, desperately trying to get up the slope. Its slow work at first, but the sound of the hive behind me exploding into full activity was enough to get me up it. I squeeze myself out of the tunnel and take off running, avoiding the hole I fell into before.

I do my best to ignore the pain in my shoulder and pump my arms and run down the tunnel, screaming.

After a good amount of time and running, I reach the end of the tunnel and run out. If I have my way I'll just keep running and never stop.
>>
>>24617209
Two men who seemed to be waiting for me catch me however and throw me to the ground, pinning me with their weight.

"We heard ya screaming from a mile off, girl– Oh! What is that smell?!"

Unfortunately, I'm unable to get my thoughts out in any coherent order and I just struggle and thrash and snarl and babble. After a while, the overseer arrives, looking quite disappointed that I'm still alive.

"Welcome back."
Aaaannnnd that's the end of it. You know what happened next.

But my character doesn't know exactly what she's gone through.

Well, she really would like a chance to kill the Goliath...

She's definitely going to have to think about it and maybe have a look at Glacia's situation before making a final decision.

I don't know, I don't think either of you would mind but it's just good party etiquette really. Consider it in spotlight time; no doubt if you abandon her to die the game follows you and you get to be all weepy and introspective about the death of another player's character, but that player doesn't really get shit except to roll up again, unless the DM conspires for her to survive somehow.

Even concentrating primarily on RP, I'd make an effort to further the interests of the party as well as my own (even with an evil/selfish character, orientate yourselves towards actions that tell the story of the whole party and not just an individual). However I don't think either of you would be that bothered? Maybe I'm reading this wrong.
>>
>>24623165

Oh, Glacia's player would definitely be pissed off- as would I if our positions were reversed. We're both really liking these characters and the dynamic they have. Also, we're the only ones we know playing DnD so if either of us gets angry and refuses to play anymore, that's it for both of us...

Could Nerissa live with herself if she leaves Glacia to die? Yes, quite easily, actually. But still...

I suppose I should give it a go if only for the reason you mentioned. And just because I try doesn't mean I'll succeed. Given how unlucky we get to be sometimes, it wouldn't surprise me if we both end up black and blue and wearing matching rope necklaces.

I disagree. You were most excellent. But alright...

This particular 'campaign' was a very short one, a side-campaign. specifically, we've got a rather lengthy campaign that was on hold because one of the players was being unavailable. So this was a small game in the same homebrew setting, starting a week or two before the current time in the primary game.

That warning's a bit necessary because this campaign is a bit fucked up.

The setting is presumably in the year 20XX. Essentially, in ~1930, the world collapsed when magic started showing up and non-human races started showing up. The current state of the world is something like 130 or 170 years after the fact, and has a very 1880s/magitech/weird west feel to it. (Back in december I wrote up a rather lengthy narration of the primary campaign, which you can probably find on sup/tg/ under 'tengu gunslinger'.)

The characters were:

>Susan. CE Teifling Rogue.
Buddy wanted to try playing a CE/sociopathic character. Mixed success. Due to tiefling and rolling, he ended up with a completely absurd amount of skillpoints and more pertinently, languages. 14 languages at character start, 75 skillpoints at level 3. My god.

>Amelisce; CN Wayang magus (I think)
Wayang are apparently some weird race that is descended/immigrated from the plane of shadows. The Plane of Shadows doesn't really exist in this bizarre homebrew setting. Player decided to play this as a sort of racial depression and loss as to where she came from or why her race exists.

>Ssena Lass; TN Lizardfolk Druid (urban druid archetype)
Me. Wanted to play a nice and cheery character because I hadn't for a while. She... Well, you'll see. Among other things, diplomacy, knowledge (local, nature,) Profession (gambler) and flaw: compulsive gambler. Sadly, the last two never came up, but I didn't know how long this side campaign would last.

We started out in a bar in SF. Specifically, we're all working there. Due to the arrival of weird magical shit and crazy non-human races, both of those are rather looked down upon. With the city recently taken by siege, we'd been trapped as our new overlords set up martial law and established themselves. GM told us we were working for a decent bloke who ran a tavern, Susan doing some repair and maintenance work on the building, Amelisce serving as the cook, and Ssena hanging out as an oddjobs and extra hand. All of us were getting a roof over our heads for it, but our employer's wife was a hell of a bitch, and seemed to hate us. Spent her time trying to make things as unpleasant as possible for us.

Two weeks before current. We've got pretty stiff business from soldiers swinging by ever evening, but the entire district is pretty slum-ish, and there are quiet rumors of people disappearing from the streets. We begin with our employer speaking to us, saying he's going to try and head outside the city to acquire food for the business (there's a bit of a famine going on. Also a giant magical purple domeshield over the city.) While this happens, his wife is going to be in charge.

Naturally, she takes the opportunity to be a hell of a bitch. Amelisce responds stoically, Susan keeps carefully impassive, and Ssena remains aggressively cheerful. 's just how it goes. Eventually, our dear mistress leaves us to our devices, and we make things happen. The evening comes, the bar fills up, and I'm busy playing serving wench (despite being a six and a half foot lizard with 17 Str.)

>>24623753
Things are going great & two things are pointed out to me: In one corner, we have a rather drunken general. Like, busy taking the bar's drinking challenge, and already looking like he won't be able to walk to the door without help, let alone home. Hovering over him and looking slightly disapproving, an elven chick who appears to be his adjutant or *secretary. Quite sober, seems to be here reluctantly, only because her boss/**owner is too. Does seem to be looking out for the general.

Conversely, at another table, a bevy of soldiers are hanging out, drinking a lot, and glancing towards the general and his secretary sporadically. While I'm serving a round of drinks, several of the soldiers lean over and whisper to me that there's a very hefty tip in it for me if I can slip the general's secretary something special; some kind of clear potion that they seem to be treating as relatively valuable. I smile, nod, and on my next pass by the general's table, I offer it to the elf, informing her that the soldiers send their compliments.

She raises an eyebrow, says, "I'll bet they do.", passes me a tip and sends it back. I sadly inform the soldiers that the good lady declined it. They're not happy, but so it goes.

Fast forwarding towards the evening and the approach of the 10:00 curfew, there's a rather loud explosion from another district in the city. Most of the soldiers up and run out, the general's secretary does, and given the brief break, we all climb up on the roof of the bar to check it out.

*OOC, these are individuals our other characters, in the primary campaign, have an interest in finding.

**The GM loves his grimdark. In this case, a plethora of hierarchical slave-rings have made an appearance in the setting, with certain rings granting dominion over people wearing other ones. Generally, they count as cursed items, and force the wearer to obey. Different varieties preserve different amounts of the wearer's independence and intelligence.
>>
>>24623869
Oh, sidenote, the rings are generally used on nonhuman humanoid races, because slavery. Anyway;

Susan decides she's going to go check out what happened, and proceeds to play rooftop-runner across the city, into another district, so she can get a better view. Amelisce and Ssena go back to work, figuring Susan will tell them what's up when she comes out.

While I'm cleaning up in the tavern, I notice that the soldiers, having left in a hurry and some confusion, left their odd clear vial behind. After we're cleaned up, I take a moment to inspect that, fail to identify it, (no knowledge arcana, no alchemy) but figure it probably isn't lethal. Out of curiosity, I carefully taste a little of it. I fail a will save. I drink the rest and feel quite pleasant. I head on back to work mildly buzzed and extremely compliant.

Susan, rooftop running, makes it to the other district of the city, and what she sees is yet another party the GM has run in this setting, in this case an evil party that's been running around black-bagging, torturing, and murdering people. Run of the mill evil party. Been serving as enforcers for the bad guys. This is the tail end of their last operation in the city before getting sent elsewhere. tl;dr: they're not nice people, they don't do nice things.

On the bright side, on her way back, Susan accidentally breaks through a roof, ends up in someone's attic, and manages to find a potion and some small-magical-item bric a brac. She can't quite identify it and brings it back.

She comes back as we finish cleaning up, and we chat around an empty table for a bit. Ssena's being a bit loopy, and Susan briefly confirms that Ssena's been acting a bit odd for a while with Amelisce.

Naturally, she seizes the opportunity, and gets Ssena to try on each of the magical widgets she found, in case they're cursed.

>cont.
>>
>>24623978
Due to having effectively been roofied, Ssena has no objection and complies with all requests. Luckily, none are.

We prepare to turn in, find out that the good employer's wife, that bitch named Sasha, locked us out of our lodgings. Evidently hoping we'd get blackbagged, or something of the sort. Well, she's pretty unpleasant in general, but while the others hate her for it, Ssena's inclined not to dwell on it. Susan manages to pick the locks and get us in.

Note: I forgot to mention, about the time of the explosion, when everyone was outside, I saw Sasha talking to some shadowy, mysterious figure just outside. It's a thing that happened.

We are promptly black-bagged in the middle of the night. Those of us who wake up (Susan, Ssena,) resist with varying degrees of success, but there's two equivalent-level enforcers built for grappling that break into our rooms, and it doesn't go well. Susan does the best of us; she kills one, breaks out, starts shouting about intruders, waking the others up, and fights her way downstairs. Midway through this, as she's basically been throwing knives left and right, the GM asks her how many knives she has on her person. The answer is something like "I have 14 left.".

Anyway, Susan fights her way out, and heads out the front door to see some guards, a cart full of unconscious bodies, Sasha, and some odd, mysterious person talking to Sasha. Essentially, Sasha sold us off. Susan figures her odds aren't good, throws a knife at Sasha (manages to give her cheek a bit of a scar, but nothing significant,) and attempts to climb a buliding and escape. Mysterious Person casts a spell, Susan rolls a 24 will save, and succumbs to sleep. She discovers right before nodding off, as she falls of the side of the building, that the ring she'd found the previous night was a ring of featherfall.

We wake up all in a cage undergound, with other people in cages up and down the hall.

>cont.
>>
>>24624079
So, cages. Prisoners. Fun. We sit up, look around a bit, and determine that we are not alone. Across from us, Sasha's in her own cage, with some stranger who those of us who pass a knowledge check identify as a werewolf. To our right is a rather laconic and depressed looking guy who seems to have lots of metal rods jammed through his various bodyparts. To our left, another werewolf. Across and to the right a bit, two humans. A cage or two down the hall, to our left, some kobolds.

All in cages. Naturally, we're somewhat upset about this, none quite as upset as Sasha, who when she regains consciousness, begins crying and shouting about how she isn't supposed to be here, and they took her by mistake. Indeed... This lasts until she wakes up her cellmate, who growls at her to shut up. As backbone is not her specialty, she does.

We investigate our cage. The lock is very odd; it seems to be surrounded by some kind of distortion effect. Difficult to look at. There are runes on our cage which Susan, knowing essentially all languages, can read.

We say hi to our fellow inmates. Susan informs us that Sasha sold us off and got taken herself. Ssena cheerfully says hi to Sasha, and asks how this has worked out for her. Introduces herself to the kobolds down the hall too, as she quite likes kobolds. Among other things, with a little flattery, she correctly guesses that kobolds are clever little buggers, and convinces them to give us a lockpick since all of Susan's were taken. It's passed down the hall, and they watch us carefully as Susan fiddles with the oddly veiled lock.

After a moment, the lock eats the lockpick. Literally.

>cont.
>>
>>24624268
That's rather distressing, and we're shortly distracted; the gent with the metal rods to our right is taken away buy a squadron of guards. As it happens, our is on the right side to have a small grated window that looks out on ground level at a large adjacent arena. It is there that the vanished prisoner soon appears, where he faces a rather curbstomp fight; he's put in the arena with a gent we know as the (a) BBEG of the setting, and said BBEG's bodyguard. His challenge is essentially to lay hands on the BBEG at all. Period. Before the bodyguard (a character from our other campaign...) kills him. As it turns out, metal-rods-man is capable of conjuring and throwing around a bit of electricity, though not quite lightning-bolt-tier. He does not succeed and dies pretty shortly.

Afterwards, our warden decides to pay us a bit of a visit, a stately looking lady who seems to be running the prison/arena system merely as a side effect of making sure she has plenty of test subjects on hand. A real hobby for modifying people, she seems to have. We're also all addressed as Test Subjects 5009-5012. I think Sasha's '9, Susan's '10, Amelisce is '11, and Ssena is '12. Or something like that, basically irrelevant. Here, the PCs choose different paths; Amelisce basically resigns herself to her depression, does nothing. Susan does her absolute best to piss off our warden as much as possible. And Ssena remains as polite as possible, even expressing interest in the warden's research and experiments.

Despite intent, Ssena accidentally gains the warden's ire; given no name, and since everyone's been given numbers, Ssena tries calling the warden Zero. (Low key sniping, and an invitation for the warden to give us a name.) The warden does not like that, and decides to communicate this by grabbing Ssena for her first round of modification. Dragged off down the halls, Ssena ends up strapped to an operating table in a lab and facing vivisection.

>cont.
>>
>>24624419
Ssena's thing so far has basically been being very calm, low-key, and cheerful. Ain't no need to go hating people. No reason to be rude. On occasion, she's used her perpetual cheery behavior to bother others. Despite all that, being strapped to a table and cut open is a bit much, and she starts to panic as it becomes very clear that she isn't getting out of it.

's okay though. The warden decides she'll be nice, and asks Ssena's opinion on what modifications or 'upgrades' she wants to receive. Since the objective seems to be arena fighting, 'tougher' seems a relatively safe goal, though Ssena really would prefer to skip the whole 'upgrade' thing all together.

The warden makes the decision, attempts to chloroform Ssena with the same substance that was in that vial she found back at the bar, and joy of joys, Ssena passes a fort save and instead stays conscious. The party back in the sell spend the next few hours listening to the echoes of Ssena screaming her throat raw.

When finally tossed back into the cell, Ssena's natural weapon claws are much larger and more pronounced; Ssena has had dragonscales implanted here and there, and looks half-alive. [+2 con, DR 1, natural weapons have increased damage dice] Susan helps prop Ssena up against the wall, asking how she is. The answer is 'bad'.

Susan then notices the dragonscales implanted over Ssena's vitals. (Chest/throat/etc.) She promptly decides, since they need weapons, tools, and so on, she needs some of Ssena's dragonscales. Ssena, just recovering from open chest surgery, thinks about it for a moment, realizes she probably can't stop Susan in her current condition, and so reluctantly lies down on the cell floor again and accedes. Susan helpfully covers Ssena's mouth so that her screaming won't alert the guards, and begins attempting to tear out one of the smaller scales.

>cont.

Kill yourself
>>
>>24624587
The GM's verdict is that Susan has to roll a strength check higher than Ssena's CON (now 19). Susan, though she has 22 INT, does not have strength. This takes three or four tries, and involves Susan using a broken arrowhead she found to saw the scale free. Eventually, she manages it.

>Susan: "Thank you. This may help us."
>Ssena: "As long as you don't need anymore."
>Susan: "Oh, I will."

Though a chilling exchange, we're not given time to dwell on it. Guards promptly show up, Susan hides her solitary dragonscale and broken arrowhead under a loose brick, and we're dragged off for our first arena match.

>Oh god, I completely forgot
When we first met the Warden, Sasha had spent her time begging and pleading to be let out, promising she wouldn't tell anyone, insisting that there must have been some mistake. After all, she was a human, not some filthy subhuman. The warden smiled, nodded, then pulled a syringe and injected Sasha with it. The result was that while Ssena was off getting cut open, Sashas was busy 'mutating' into a tiefling. OOC; what's going on here is the Warden and the BBEG seem to have somehow managed to put a bottleneck on the resurgence of magic in the world. Magic, monsters, nonhuman races are all side effects of it rapidly becoming a high-magic setting. Essentially, they're limiting it, and can also control and focus it.

Anyway, the end result is that Sasha ends up as some kind of badass variety of tiefling/halfdemon. Also, extremely miserable, given how she's ended up and how racist she was against the PCs for being nonhumans. Also, the change apparently leaves her extremely hungry. Hightened metabolism, or something.

On a completely unrelated note, what do you think our first arena match is against?

We're tossed into a small armoury to gird ourselves for battle, and shortly evicted into the arena. Several large columns, a sandy floor, and far above us, the stands, fans, and observers.

>cont.
>>
>>24624701
Ssena takes the opportunity to raise the rifle she got, and take a potshot at one of the stands. Their protection is proven when the bullet slams into the column next to Ssena's head. (when asked to roll against my own AC, I rolled poorly.)

The other individual of the arena is determined to be Sasha. The warden's voice is heard speaking to us occasionally, but primarily serving as the announcer for the arena. We're informed that we have to beat our opponent, and Susan and Amelisce leap at the opportunity to killmaimburn the individual who has harmed us so.

Ssena is a bit more reluctant. She'd suspected she smelled worse things than dead fish in the city, but not this bad. She's got no issue with bloodsports, but she has issue with being vivisected, and issue when she's the unwilling combatant. She tries to convince the others to lay off Sasha for a bit. Sasha's a bitchy, scummy, unpleasant creature of questionable worth, but... Well. Doing it because you're told to sucks some of the fun out of it, and she'd rather not do it for the arena/warden's benefit.

Surprisingly, after some persistent arguing, Ssena manages to almost convince Susan to back off for a bit. We're so close to solving things diplomatically, uniting the prisoners against the captors, (I'm curious as to what will happen if the prisoners refuse to fight,) and we've been successful enough that the warden has taken to quietly taunting us, reminding Sasha of how hungry she is and how tasty we probably are. Eventually, she even promises Sasha she'll let her go if she can kill us. For her part, Sasha has been running away from us, insisting that she can't fight, she's just miserable and unhappy and shouldn't be here.

>cont.
>>
>>24624789

Our warden isn't aces at bluffing, but Sasha crit fails her sense motive. She perks up at "You'll be set free." Ssena tries to convince her that the warden is anything but trustworthy, and right as Sasha is on the edge, Amelisce decides she doesn't care about anything and attacks Sasha.

The problem with diplomacy is that it's kind of an all or nothing affair.

Also; whatever Sasha is now, she's gotten fasthealing from it, so most of the damage our initial attacks on her had has disappeared.

What follows is an extremely close fight that ends with Amelisce unconscious, Susan in the red, and Ssena out of spells and taking out Sasha in melee with her natural weapons.

As a side note, Ssena's okay with violence and killing people, but prefers to avoid it. It's so... uncivilized. Also, she tends to get a bit of bloodlust going when she's in melee, getting hurt and smelling an enemy's blood. When Sasha goes down, Ssena follows her, ripping Sasha's throat out with her teeth. Behind the scenes at this point, this put Sasha at exactly -CON, and when the GM rolled for stabilization, Sasha got exactly what she needed to pass.

Assuming that someone without a throat is dead, Sasha turns to stabilize Susan and check on Amelisce. Even as she does this, guards are rushing out into the arena to subdue us and take us back to our cells. Though we were given very strict warnings against trying to take gear out of the arena, Ssena utilizes half a round before they get to us to shove her leftover rifle ammo into her mouth. Instantly caught. (The GM explained that if he let us swipe stuff from the arena, he figured getting out would be too easy.)

We're dragged back to the cells, and Susan, when she regains consciousness, is taken off for her turn on the operating table. She spends the entirety of the time doing her best possible to provoke the warden. The warden decides to play mean with her.

>I can't do anything without taking a billion posts

Essentially, she sucks the tielfing out of her. Susan wakes up as a normal human with a small brand on one wrist. She also wakes up unguarded, in an empty lab, and promptly slips out of the straps on the table. This is not, however, meant to be; deliberately set up, and Susan shortly walks into a guard patrol and is hauled back to the prison. The warden swings by to explain, though; She's temporarily caused Susan to revert to being a normal human. It's temporary, however, and she expresses great interest in seeing what happens when the brand on her wrist fractures, breaks, and she changes again into who-knows-what?

Susan, for her part, is human again like she was. Not only that, but the voices in her head, the urges and desires that kind of led her into being a bit of a sociopath, are gone. She's... practically normal. (Backstory wise, Susan's player decided she was a human prior to the last bout of magical-resurgence a couple years back. In contrast, Ssena was always a lizardfolk.) In practice, she's much more friendly and less CE, certainly a welcome surprise. (Just prior to this, however, buddy playing Susan had discussed her sociopathy with me ab bit and resolved to reign it in a little so that things in the party were a little smoother. Which he did, for all of the twenty seconds he had after that to play Susan-the-tiefling.)

Well, left alone in our cells for a bit, we decide to spend the time working on how to get out. Ssena prepares some spells, and Susan prepares to escape-artist out of our cell. She's promptly warned by our neighbor, who reaches through the bars to stop her. Apparently, when you try to squeeze out, the bars try to kill you. Susan thinks about it, thanks our neighbor for the warning, and tries anyway. She promptly fails a reflex save, takes 8d8 damage, and falls unconscious. The iron bars don't seem to mind and keep trying to crush her into a pulp

Ssena, with our neighbor's help, manages to pull Susan back in and stabilize her. Great.

Anyway, some talking with the other prisoners around us; some of them seem worried about spies. The kobolds down the hall, who Ssena is extremely friendly to, were apparently part of a gang in the city that was in favor with the previous power of the city, but not the current one. The humans in the cage across to our right are allegedly 'reformed' slavers, actually individuals our primary party encountered in the main campaign. (Our party being the factor that made them reformed slavers, rather than say, corpses.)

I seem to have a penchant for failing non-critical, but extremely inconvenient rolls, and failing them hard. The kobolds don't believe the reformed part, and consider him slaving scum. He protests. Ssena crit fail sense motive, and think the kobolds are right. Ssena doesn't really react, just files away the fact that he's not to be trusted and liable to turn.

Anyway, some more chitchat, and another day of recovering in the cages. We can actually use magic in them, so Ssena's been healing people and casting purify food and drink on the food of anyone who wants it, always on her own. At first, most refuse out of suspicion, but after our first fight, we're basically considered prisoners like them. Shortly after that, Sasha is returned to her cage, still alive, but on cut rations for losing her fight, and starving.

I'm afraid he's right. Unless you had a gamer typographer taking notes at the time everything is way too verbatim and exact. This is just a poorly written story.
>>
>>24625235
I'm sorry, I'm not thinking straight. Forgot to mention; while Susan was being crushed to a pulp, the brand on her wrist finally broke. She rolled for 50/50 chance at the time, since the werewolf and Ssena were busy trying to get her out of the bars, and she ended up changing into a lizardfolk. Apparently, it's contagious. Sorry, but this is relevant in a minute.

The next major event was a day later, when all the prisoners in our cellblock and apparently some others were collected and run off to communal showers. Also, apparently, run before the prospective buyer's eye. We cause a minor ruckus in the mass-showers; Susan asks for a distraction, then proceeds to acrobatics like a boss up to the rafters and the catwalks overlooking the showers, knock one guard off, and almost get at the warden. The distraction which Ssena provides is raising her voice to speak to all the prisoners, and forward a motion that, since we're all prisoners and all on the same side, if we meet in the arena, we should do our best not to kill each other. Adequate diplomacy roll, this goes over pretty well.

Susan's chucked back down after getting caught, and Ssena manages to catch her. Showertime ends, everyone gets dressed again, and we're put in actual lineup before prospective buyers. They look us over, choose one or two, and are about to finish up when Susan goes, in the boredest voice she can manage, "Wow, you guys might be wealthy but I sure don't know why. I bet you don't even recognize a good bargain when you see it."

One of the prospective buyers goes "Oh, really? I suppose you're referring to yourself?"

Susan responds by stating that she can speak and write fourteen languages, knows more about most topics than anyone in the room (all those skillpoints,) and is an excellent acrobat and burglar with a large range of skills. This is enough to get the buyer's interest, and he turns to the warden and goes "I'd like to see this one put through her paces."

>about 2/3rds of the way done

She's led off away from everyone else, to be Tested, and we're all led back to our respective cages. Fun stuff.

So she's basically told she'll be given four tests, fail any two and you die. More fun stuff. I'm afraid I might not remember all of them, though.

She had to... find a secret compartment in a desk, I believe it contained an antidote to a poison she was administered. She had to open a safe and identify the most valuable item within it; some trap and alchemy stuff... However, the final aspect was acquiring the key to a small chest. Susan, succeeding at all aspects of the testing with flying colors, ended up finding within the casket a golden slavering. (We knew from our other campaign that gold was pretty high on the hierarchy. Essentially, something that would lock her into servitude but not strip her of all free will, and would probably give her authority to order around those with lesser rings.) Susan takes a final opportunity to insult the Warden, who's been watching all these tests, and slips it on. She's bought, sold, and escapes from the prison.

Meanwhile, the Warden is looking extremely pissed, because she basically had no idea who Susan was. When Susan drew attention to herself at the lineup, the warden went "Huh... I thought we only had one lizardfolk..." and only realized it was her most offensive prisoner after Susan already had one of the warden's Big Money guests interested in herself. So the Warden is forced to basically sell Susan off immediately without even getting to study her at all.

Well, mostly immediately. The buyer states that he'd prefer Susan be a halfelf or something, and so she's hauled off for a race-change before being taken away.

Sorry I'm so good at remembering little details about my DnD sessions like getting thrown in jail, getting beat up, escaping and freeing some slaves and being able to coherently tell others about it.

This.

I too have an excellent memory for silly little details. I understand if you faggots out there don't pay attention like I or OP and his friend do, but I remember all the details and could also recount times I've played recently exactly like this.

Meanwhile: Back in the cell, Ssena takes the opportunity to examine the lock on her cell. It's still under that weird distortion veil, but maybe she can learn something about it by feeling it up. So she does... and midway through this, she proceeds to feel something latch onto her arm. Like, a sucker, or a tentacle, or a tongue. A strength check is called for, and Ssena rolls a 20. She proceeds to rip her arm out, bringing with it something her hand happened to latch around, a small, partially-digested dagger. OOC, she just killed the creature in the lock, though it took me awhile to realize that.

Additionally, with a magic weapon, Ssena can attempt to deface the runes on the cage that, among other things, cause it to react violently when someone tries to squeeze out or damage the cage. The best part, of course, is that the lock is now pickable.

Then, OOC, we realize that Susan just got herself sold away, and nobody in the party can pick locks anymore.
Fuck.

Still, this is good stuff. At least her suspicions regarding the locks is confirmed, and she knows they can be killed. (OOC, the GM informs me that if strength check had been failed, he might have taken an arm.)

Susan's player produces a new character; Callsign Eaglefort. No, I'm not kidding. A half-orc sorcerer, claiming having once been a male courtesan. Anyway, Callsign Eaglefort doesn't actually know his real name, believes he's a secret agent and in service to the sun, and proves even more foulmouthed than Susan when it comes to our captors.

Don't sweat it. You've got a sweet game going, haters are just gonna hate.

I can't remember details like that, but that's because I have a bad memory in general; I wouldn't dream of claiming it's impossible.

We're promptly given our next 'fight'; not in the arena, but apparently for research purposes. We are allowed to arm up under observation before being sent into a fullscale replica of a city block. We're told we have to 'survive'. And while arming up, Eaglefort decides to try insulting our observer (some kind of notetaker. Experiment monitor, and all that,) and casually makes some insults against whoever our captor is too. (As Eaglefort hasn't yet had the pleasure of meeting our warden.)

We're grouped with the werewolf from our adjacent cell, and the ex-slaver from across our prisonblock hall. After determining that they don't speak draconic, but Eaglefort does, Ssena take the time to warn Eaglefort that the ex-slaver is a slaver, and probably highly unreliable.

This fight is a bit odd, as we hole up in a house, and are shortly assaulted by a swarm of small zerglings, basically. Not literally, but they're some kind of vaguely-hiveminded creature, with different breeds. (a 5hp scout type, a 10 hp skirmisher unit, a larger one that was a decent challenge, and a massive, building-wrecking monstrosity.) I still don't know what they were, but the impression I got was that our Warden, under the BBEG, was testing macro-scale bioweapons for him.

Though barricaded in the house, we face a rather brutal assault. Luckily, Eaglefort proves to be a very effectively built blaster-caster. Despite getting grappled and hurt and Ssena running out of healing spells, and ending the combat with Ssena at negatives and nobody but Eaglefort over 1/2 HP, we don't 'survive', we kill 'em all and are let out mere hours after our 'three-day survival test' begins.

And people like you should simply tape your sessions (or a more up to date idea would be to record them on a computer or smartphone).
>>

Ssena's current status has the pleasant side effect of her actually being unconscious when she's pulled out and put under the knife again right after the test. Eaglefort follows shortly afterwards. It seems that the warden heard some of the things he was saying about her, and decided to express her disapproval. Eaglefort's response at being strapped to a table by a lady with an array of bladed implements was "Man, I used to get paid extra for this." Despite his desperate attempts to flirt with the warden or otherwise make nice, Eaglefort ends up getting modified significantly too.

How significantly, you ask? I'll tell you how significantly; he ended up a female kistune. He *really* managed to piss off the warden. Naturally, Eagelfort was not pleased either, though those around him found it kind of hilarious. (All being prisoners under the same threat, everyone was sympathetic of course. Just... it was funny.) Anyway, Eaglefort is allowed to reassign his racial feats and we carry on.

Then we heard a distant explosion. OOC, this verified where we were, and that we were almost caught up to our primary party time-wise. 99% certain that was a stick of dynamite from my character as we fled a rather fancy hotel in downtown SF injured and with the law on our tail.

About that time, Ssena regained consciousness with her new bodymods. Most importantly, however, she took the opportunity to tell the kobolds down the hall about the creatures in the locks, and why they hadn't been able to pick them. Then Ssena said she'd try something, and choose to spam heat metal/chill metal on their lock, in hopes that the spell would kill the creature inside.

As it turned out, it did. Creature gone, the kobolds could pick locks. Locks open, the kobolds were gone and could pick other locks, which had their respective creatures killed via kobolds or Eaglefort's blasting. We start crowding the halls and clamour goes up as it looks like we're actually managing an escape.

>cont
>>
>>24625911
We start trying to organize ourselves, Ssena tries to take charge with her diplomacy, and suggest that we should make for the arena armouries, where we can actually gear up in preparation for taking on the guards and fighting our way out with everyone.

Then She shows up.

She is not the warden. She is an epic level dragon that the other party had encountered and accidentally released from the sword she was bound in. Her teleporting in was presumably right after the confrontation she just escaped with our primary party, which is where that game was on hold. This then put us just a bit ahead of our primary party.

Anyway, she teleports in in her assumed humanoid form, disintegrates all the cages with a snap of her fingers, then declares that she intends to rule this pitiful little world, and any who are wise will swear loyalty to her. To swear loyalty to her, all you have to do is follow her, she'll lead you to the warden of this prison, and you can kill her. That's it. Nice and easy, why not?

My interpretation of this is that she's used to being a dragon, and forgets that she's in a human form. She teleports in, declares she will rule the world, and expects everyone to cower in fear and leap to obey.

I mean, she's got this uncomfortable, kind of creepy aura around her, and she does seem to have some big magic on her side, but... she's just a person. Looks as mortal as you or I, and though she's evidently got some big magic, so do other people. Ssena speaks up to say that while she's unwilling to swear loyalty to Epic Level Dragon, (her aunty warned her against megalomaniacs,) since Epic Level Dragon wants the warden dead and most of the prisoners want the warden dead, their goals seem to align and there's no reason they can't work together.

>Just about done.

Eaglefort speaks up to say that he'll kill the damn bitch that took his... That made him a bitch! Yeah!

Epic Level Dragon does not respond, but merely starts off down the hall. Most of the other slaves decide vengeance is pretty sweet, and they can do it for their own reasons. Everybody wants the warden dead, as she's been anything but a nice host.

When we arrive at the warden's research lab, there are several dead prisoners all round, the smell of burning/corroding flesh, and the warden is backed into a corner, nursing a broken arm, and defending herself against the horde of prisoners. She evidently killed a few of them to make a move against her. The Epic Level Dragon merely stands by watching.

Ssena, cheerfully, says hi to the warden and asks if the warden remembers her name. Ssena's pretty much resolved to kill this woman, despite doing her best to be polite to her, but who knows, right? Maybe, just maybe, there's some reason to forgive, forget, or otherwise let the warden live.

The warden responds with "5012", which is not the right answer, though admittedly it is what the warden has always called Ssena. Ssena gives a smile baring altogether too many sharp teeth (a side effect of her second time on the operating table; bite attack gained a die size,) and then proceeds to interrupt the warden's attempt to cast a spell with her breath weapon, (another side effect of the second time under the knife) and dive forward to grapple the warden. Ssena's rather strong, the warden is borne to the ground under her, and the crowds close in to basically kick her to death. Ssena rips out the warden's throat with her teeth, and, just for good measure, rips out her heart and eats it. (After all, the last time she tried to verify a kill by ripping someone's throat out, it didn't work.)

Ssena then passes a fortitude save and does not contract vampirism; apparently the warden was a vampire.

Dude, do you even pass your stories down through the ages? If humans can do that for generations, I'd imagine OP could remember the events of a campaign that happened A DAY BEFORE SHE POSTED.

And your pitiful, handicapped reliance on electronics and technology to remember what you can't for you is showing.

>Waahhh i don't like storytime and i think this is fake because it's bad because i say so guys!
Nope, not buying it. Since your reading comprehension, or even your ability to read at all is apparently shot to shit along with your memory, I don't think you're in a position to dictate what is and isn't bad. Especially considering the aforementioned.

Epic Level Dragon has stood on the sidelines of this room and watched this happen, and is quite delighted to see the warden brutally, horribly murdered. She then proceeds to smash some of the elaborate setup the warden had here, reach out for the scrying pool in the center of the room that's the focus for the bottleneck the warden set up over magic entering the world, and destroy it. (Epic Level Dragon is trying to retrieve a minion that couldn't enter the world due to insufficient magic. Now there is all the magic.)

She gives a grade AA Evil Villainess laugh, and teleports everyone out, everyone is suddenly a sunny hill outside the city. Everyone suddenly gives a collective wince and shout, as everyone feels a small, black brand burn its way onto their wrist, as if with acid. Epic Level Dragon smiles and teleports herself out, leaving everyone there. End side-campaign.

So, effectively, Epic Level Dragon showed up and wrecked everything, and gained an army of slave/ex-prisoner minions sworn to her via... pact? I guess? Then left us to her own devices while she goes off to do her own thing. On the bright side, she's definitely not inclined to cooperate with the existent BBEG previously mentioned. As far as our other party is concerned, we're caught between two separate BBEGs and our best hope is that they'll get in each other's way.

As far as this party is concerned, Callsign Eaglefort will probably go off and do his own thing, Amelisce (who was absent for the last session of this,) may tag along or not, and Ssena will probably head off to get her gambling fix and then see if she can hunt down what happened to Susan (she doesn't know,) and eventually free her.

Indubitably, Epic Level Dragon will be showing up to be a bitch again at some point.

There's also the fact that OPs story was only a single session so it can't have lasted more than a few hours. Every event she mentioned was something memorable though, so people SHOULD remember a campaign like that.

Unless of course they don't roleplay or anything and just roll dice the entire time to fulfill their need to kill something and be a murderhobo.
