So how do you best acquire Japanese TRPGs?
I have tried looking for them, but I have had trouble finding any place that ships internationally, or a reliable proxy service for these channels.

Have any of you had any luck with acquiring some "exotic" TRPGs or other /tg/ related material?

Also.

And to share some of the love for exotic games. Night Wizard can be fairly fun, and it's very easily thrown together on the fly.

It has never been fully translated but this should cover most of the entire game, and should work just fine to support a proper game.
This little PDF covers most of the basics and the rules, and is what I would say is the nicest general rules reference out there.
ecliss.net/stuff/NWReference.pdf

This is probably the best complication of English Night Wizard material, and is no matter the case the place to go for checking out classes and items and all of that jazz.

Really quite the light hearted game. Surprisingly customizable as well. Though the tone might stay relatively the same.
It is not impossible to reverse the whole thing though, if you were to feel like roleplaying as sadistic little critters scaring people. But why would you want to do that?

Actually. I haven't played the game myself though I have wanted to try it out for a long time. Have any of you tried it?

>>
>>24581822
Explain?

If there was a game you really liked available in a language you know, and you wanted to play it with your friends, wouldn't you translate it?

Or is it the "I did this work for my friends, fuck anonymous for digging up my private archive and eating up my bandwidth" part?
>>
I've been waiting for Meikyuu Kingdom since 2008. As much as I want the game, I've mostly given up hope on getting it translated.
>>
>>24580842
I penned up a setting involving a long abandoned O'Neill cylinder type space colony a long time ago, but I only recently found a group that might be willing to try it and we are currently in the middle of a CoC campaign. Actually, I'm going to have some downtime to work on my OW campaign, so I might just bring that back out in the near future.

I'll bring /tg/ back results of the shenanigans if I actually go through with it.

So yeah, about that scenario that was included in the rulebook... that was one hell of an ending, huh?
>>
>>24581859
Assuming the worst case scenario of weight for a book of 3 pounds, that's only 30 bucks a book for shipping.

>>24581872
The second bit, yeah. Bandwidth is a fair complaint, but getting mad because your work got spread around, allowing other people to enjoy it, especially when you're not losing money on the deal is another matter. "Only I get to enjoy this thing that can be infinitely replicated without cost to myself" is bullshit, even if she did the work.
>>
>>24581927
I'll note that had she planned to eventually make money off the translation, that's fine, as incentive to do work makes sense, but if it was just sitting there being utilized by only a select few, that's information hoarding. I wouldn't argue she necessarily had a moral obligation to publish and distribute it, but she got mad even when it leaked out on its own.

Granted, I'm going on very little info. Perhaps she didn't want the info proliferated because she didn't want the creators losing out on the material's eventual release in English, or perhaps she viewed the translation without permission of the author as morally objectionable, but found it acceptable to do so for people she knew had purchased legitimate copies of the material.
>>
>>24577033
>How much do these things normally cost?
If you are going to actually buy it in person, ignoring shipping and proxy fees and all that jazz, then it is actually quite cheap.

These games tend to be cheaper than in America.
>>
>>24582027
>eventually make money off the translation
If it would make her feel any better, if she would manage to publish books of the game then I would most likely buy them.

I have the impression that it is a great game to play in between other games. And if things kick off, then you have all the freedom to take it further. It seems like a nice game.
>>
>>24573876

OP, if you want to get copies of jap games translated, maybe you should try going through pre-established channels, i.e. manga translators.

im sure some group out there would be willing to tackle such a task.
>>
>>24583392

Wouldn't that be extremely expensive? A lot of groups tend to charge a lot just to translate a chapter of manga, which doesn't contain nearly as many words.
>>
>>24583392
I remember a thread from some year ago, where people tried to suggest the idea to publish it to JAST/J-List.
I wonder why people didn't think of regular manga/book publishers.

Well, perhaps because they typically don't translate games. But that doesn't really change how these are books.
That said, at this moment I can only hope that the guy(s) UsuallyRandom mentioned that was going to talk with the people holding the rights for Meikyuu Kingdom, got somewhere with it.

It has been a little over 5 years since people started to wonder if it might possibly be brought over. But I am guessing that the situation looks somewhat more promising now than at any previous point during these 5 years.
Of course, that is granted their negotiations didn't fail completely, but I see no reason why one should be that pessimistic.

I am holding my thumbs. Great game, would buy.
>>
>>24583426

i have no idea, i always assumed scan groups just did it for fun.

It'd be a easy way to gain notoriety, if that's something people are after.
>>
>>24582027
Make money off of someone else's material? The infringement and completely illegal. She's just a bitch for hoarding this for herself.
>>
>>24583588
She might have wanted to sell it to the rightful license holders or something. There are many ways to make a bit of money (it's usually not too much) from translations without breaking any laws.
>>
>>24583588

distributing it is also illegal.

dont throw the baby out with the bathwater.
>>
>>24583622

That's assuming a business would buy amateur translations, which they most likely wouldn't
>>
>>24583426
Are commissions normal nowadays? I haven't really followed many translation groups after I took the effort to learn Japanse myself. Back then the only ones who worked on commissions were those who translated porn.
If you want something translated, I would recommend buying and scanning the TRPG you want translated, because having to buy a book just to see if it's interesting is a pretty big hurdle for the translator. If there is a official PDF release of the game, it's much referable to purchase that than the paper edition, because translating digital text can be much easier if the translator doesn't know every single kanji.

Think of a sales pitch. There's hundreds of manga, light and not-so-light novels waiting to be translated from Japanese to English. Why should the translator spend his time on this game? Show that there is interest in getting it translated. Most translators love fame. Post about the game on sites frequented by translators (4chan, Baka-Tsuki, etc.)

Offer to help with TRPG vocabulary if translator isn't familiar with them. Offer to help with anything you can, and make sure the translator doesn't disappear with the only copy of the translated script if he gets bored.

I'm a fan translator myself, not particularly good one though, and I can't tell whether or not I have the interest or time to translate this without first seeing how many pages the rule books have or what kind text they contain. Though this tread has managed to get me interested enough in this game that I might buy it when I go to Japan next week.
>>
>>24583845
So anyone have any recommendations on physical stores in Japan that sell TRPGs?

I wonder if it would be possible to play Maid and Make You Kingdom simultaneously, in the same game.

Like the king/prince/princess or whatever being the "Master" of the maids, and that in between each cycle of rounds the maids are assigned tasks that they have to complete in order to please the king.

That way the mansion/home/setting of the maids in regards to Maid RPG would be ever and successively changing, and their efforts could have positive or negative impacts on the Make You side of things.
It might be far-fetched, but if both are ever translated to English I believe I would like to try that some day.

basically in the world dragons exist. There is a dragon for everything. There are Ryutama or dragon people who chronicle stories and adventures of humans who embark on a journey. Those stories are what make dragon eggs hatch

The Rytama is the GMPC with abilities corresponding to his/her color

Green Ryutama:
stories about exploration and adventure
trekking the wild and travelling the frontier
discovering ancient lands etc

Blue Ryutama
stories and journies about interpersonal relationships among people. Generally Slife of Life genre

Red Ryutama
Campaign is threat and combat focused. Lots of action and sword fighting.

Black Ryutama
Campaigns with intrigue and mystery. Could be about corrupt governments or hiding the last remaining heir or a detective story.

So what game is it they are actually playing?
I have read stuff about the story, and how they got together and are GMd by that guy who was involved with Lodoss and stuff.

But what game are they using as base and what are all these mechanics coming from?

But yeah, I believe you can play males.

Mechanically age dose nothing you just roll a d10 and add 7 to the result and thats it,
gender is the weird part because the game assumes your character is female by default unless you have the tier 2 mutation "boy" whech says this "When you make a Conversation Check, you may add +1 to the die roll."

>120%

I've never played a percentile system that could handle values greater than 100, but I know the SPECIAL system's skills can do this.

How, in mechanical terms using dice, does that work? Adding dice would make skills over 100 less good than they were under it, and just using the same number of percentile dice all the time makes the whole "percentile" thing fucking retarded.

any experienced crunch monkeys willing to explain?

Looking through the replay's translation, it doesn't exactly make sense to me. Sure, I'm not that experienced with crunch but when it comes to Sparrow using his One-handed Sword (片手剣) skill to hit a rock, he had to roll below 96. I'm guessing this could just be because of the rock's AC or whatever they use in this system, but even then it doesn't feel like a rock should be able to drop something from 196% down by 100 points assuming it was a straight up 1:1 like normal stat rolls are. (There was an earlier Sense roll with another character that was straight up 80% = Lower than 80 needed to succeed)

Actually, looking at this again, there's something odd in the replay. They're using the effect score for 威圧 despite saying that it makes use of 片手剣.
You know, I'll wait for more to try to figure this shit out. Or maybe I'll try to give it a read past the translation in hopes of finding out a better example, this is going to bug me now.
>>

>mutation

Oh Japan, you so crazy.
>>
>>24610906
>Sparrow using his One-handed Sword (片手剣) skill to hit a rock, he had to roll below 96

I think in honour of Gygax-sama, they included a crit fail chance in their system. It's even got the same chance of occurring too (5%). As for over 100% chance stats, I think from what I read there's a degrees of success system involved too? So if you've got a chance of over 100%, you'll only fail on 96-100, but the difference between your roll and your maximum chance does something too. I think.
>>
>>24612971
Critical failure makes sense.

As for degree of success it's a different roll, and where I got confused as to which skill was relevant.
It comes from this.
>FM: Then you have succeeded. But this time you must also judge the 『degree of success』. Take the [Effect] score of your 〈One-Handed Sword〉 skill and add it to the result of a single die toss.
>Swallow: (Throws dice) The [Effect] is 14… I rolled a 4, so it makes 18.
>FM: Then 18 is the [achievement] of this attack. If you add the power of the longsword, that makes your damage you do on this attack.
>Swallow: (Throws dice again) Wow, it was only 1. Only 19 damage!

Effect is the red column for that sheet, the number in parenthesis only comes into account when one of his skills is used, so the number outside of them is his effect for this.
As you can see, the skill with 14 is 威圧 while One-handed Sword has 20. Ah well, I'll just chock that bit up to a bit of an error, it wasn't in any part where it's relevant anyways.

I know that /tg/'s reception to the character wasn't too great.
But personally? I don't really consider myself to have that many "that guy" traits, but this girl, her skimpy clothes disregarded, just appears to be more or less a common Beastmaster archtype.

The captivity backstory, that people might see as edgy or whatnot, at the very least ties into how she got hands on her beast and got catapulted into the story and all of that.
I a completely serious when I wish that most people in my common playgroups had character concepts that made a full circle to implement them into the story like that.

She gets an above average score from me. I think.
From what I have understood of what I have read at the very least.

Japan`s International Gamers Guild founded in 1992 by our spiritual leaders Steve Brown and Kevin a.k.a. greatpowers1, has been Japan's largest and longest running English speaking and bilingual gaming group. Do you live in Tokyo, Saitama, Kanagawa, Chiba or the surrounding area and were looking for a group to play your favorite games? Then the JIGG Tokyo guild is what you have been looking for. We play roleplaying games, boardgames, CCGs (Collectible Card Games, i.e., Magic) historical simulation games (wargames), miniatures games (including historical miniatures and games by Games Workshop), and traditional games like chess. Regular meetings are organized at least once a month. Just bring your favorite board game and there will definitely be someone willing to try it with you. Are you visiting Tokyo on vacation/business tip and need a game fix? JIGG Tokyo caters also for you. Some Webpages devoted to JIGG: Visit our Facebook group for JIGG Kanagawa too!

But the themes are gruesome, and I all in all I am not sure I am that big of a fan.

So, have you guys heard about the JRPG Double Cross?
I got to take a look at the book. Not too shabby a system. It's about people with mutant powers from some kind of supervirus that spread 20 years ago.

Players choose either 1, 2 or 3 types of powers from 12. Having one set of powers gives you access to the whole set, while 2 or 3 will dilute your choices. The choices include:
Using blood to create weapons and minions.
Electical and Air control.
Fire and Ice control.
Being a Super Genius.
Shifting your body to form claws, a horse body, wings and blades.
Creating poisons and mind altering substances to control people and animals.
Warping the body to shrink, grow or distort into weapons like mono-filament wire.
And being able to alter objects into totally different ones.
Uses d10s. Your base stats+ modifiers determines how many you throw, while skills add to the final result. You take the highest die, rolling again and adding up if you get a 10.
As you keep using your powers, you will keep building up an infection rate that if it hits 100% and if you have no way of lowering it, you will become one of the monsters that that you've been fighting.

I've played Yuyake Koyake and partly translated it myself (well, enough that people in my club can play themselves while not speaking a word of Japanese). Only so much as to introduce people to the game though. As I said in a conversation here on /tg with one of the people officially translating it (I *think* it was Ewen) into English: my usual group just have too dark a humor to play that game. We almost immediately subverted the mechanics to turn it into something quite different tonally.

>>24624746

In nomine satanis / Magna veritas is a French game (designed by Croc if memory serves well). It *was* translated in English, but as far as I can tell they took the whole thing to the first degree and totally missed the part dry, part third degree, very tongue in cheek humor, turning it into a pretty serious game of war between Heaven and Hell.

Other French games I would mention since we're into exotic games:

Rêve de Dragon (nicely translated as Reve - Dream Ouroboros in English). Which I would dub as the (very) French equivalent to Ryutama - a RPG mostly focusing on travel and the troubles that arise within it, with a system that is both very heavy and detailed and weirdly elegant once you've got the hang of it. Considered the Granddaddy of the genre in the French scene as far as I can tell.

In English:
http://www.sendspace.com/file/4qyfg2

Scales (another game by Croc) was a weirdly experimental system for its time, one I always thought failed mostly because people weren't prepared for it at the time. I wonder how people would react to it now that we've had the Forge and the whole narrativist movement.

In French (hasn't been translated as far as I know):

Here's another - Instead of doing this underground, what about finding the people with the license and offer to do some of the translation work?

Would be legit, speed up the process for the game getting out the door, might get paid if they accept, and they're likely small enough to agree to it.

I read some parts of the exact some campaign you posted. But that's just because I came over someone that had translated a couple of random parts from it. Don't even think he ever intended on translating the actual thing, just share a few segments of it.

You fool, you do not know the humble glory, the hardship and the determination of those who walk the Path of the Maid.

It is not simply cleaning a house, it is to serve your Master with your heart, body and soul. Filling in every and all occupation your Master could possibly have use of. You are to be a servant who cleans, a bodyguard, a scholar, lover and a general, and you must do all these things with precision, elegance and excellence even if your bones break and your heart falters. Because that is what your Master requires.

One of the Classes in MK is the Servant. They're a support class, much like a bard, with access to a bunch of stats and skills.

Why is it a maid or a butler? Because the game is totally tongue in cheek, the monster list features cute little goblins, Weresisters (I forget the exact name, but they pretend to be your little kid sister, calling you "Onii-chan!" before they try to chomp you), The Vorpal Bunny is a woman in a playboy bunny costume with a chainsaw and the Mayo King - a killer jar of mayonnaise and a play on the game name.
>>
>>24642004
This game sounds like it is pretty great, mushroom dragons and all.
>>
Imagine that all these games were in available in English.
Would /tg/ still just be DnD and Warhammer central?
>>
>>24642063
Yes? There are plenty of non-D&D and Warhammer games out there already in English, you big ole weeaboo you.
>>
>>24642063
Yup.

Here's the problem in a nutshell:

Most players could give two shits about games they don't play, will ignore threads about them, and won't make threads about/open to the.

Thus the big name games have more threads with more people representing more viewpoints creating more discussion that keeps the threads around longer and occasionally spin off into new threads.

When Yuuyake Koyake gets released as GSS, there will be a handful of 40 post threads about it every few days for about three weeks, then it will almost exclusively be mentioned in an aside in slightly meta threads for the rest of time. If it ever receives another thread thereafter, the first 12 posts will call the OP a weeaboo fetish-inserting faggot shitting up D&D games before someone reads deeply enough to recognize it's a thread presupposing a non-D&D system.

Welcome to /tg/

>>

>>24640602

Started with the dog henge being jealous of the newborn baby, eating it, being forced to confess because of his char flaw, then using his gomennasai power to get forgiven and his daijoubu one to cheer his master back up.

Then there was the pigeon henge who wanted to grow up to be one of the boys (Animaniacs pigeon reference, yes) and would shit on the cars of adults who forbade him from doing dangerous "gangsta" stuff.

Then there was the creepy loli troll rabbit henge (though I sadly don't remember anything specifics - something about the ganging up/taskete power I seem to recall - but the char was creepy as hell).

Anyway: not inherently bad per see, but not something I care to DM.
>>
Some great stuff in this thread. I would encourage people to continue to share translations and such. Even if /tg/ (as with most tabletop forums) is too DnD focused, the best way to get people to try new systems is to make new experiences accessible. And those of us who do already enjoy new systems thank you for your effort.

Ewen Cluney and associates have been talking about what they'd do for their next translation project, seeing as their Kickstarter has gone so well, thus far (almost 6 and a half times their estimate goal).

So, we might see Meikyuu Kingdom, Nechronica, and all those other unusual Nipponese games that we would have never seen otherwise, just as long as we keep showing them our support.

Nechronica won't happen from us, but we wish anyone who wishes to do so our very best. We don't have the rights to Meikyuu but we have met the people who do and we will be helping them when we can.

Those games Kamiya asked us not to publish in English (we've already finished with the translations) are really cool little games and we'll release them when he gets done with those rather than spend effort for a game that will be updated down the line. We also don't want to exclusively do just Ryo Kamiya stuff and so we're hunting around for recent JRPGs to localize after we're done with our current release. We are running into the "happy problem" of licenses getting picked up for release here but there's still some interesting games needing some translation love.

Double Cross and Shinobigami (about modern day Ninja clan rivalry) are also coming out in English really soon. How soon? I got a hard copy of Double Cross right here.

Double Cross surprised me too. We were looking into the license and found out it got picked up by someone new who doesn't run in the same circles as the rest of the small JRPG crews.
