No news is good news, I guess. in other news, that new warships game is kinda fun, haha.

Pastebin here: http://pastebin.com/zFxWNup1

That's got the majority of the major characters, and what you need to know about them. good place to start if you wanna just jump in without an archive dive.

http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Strike%20witches%201989

And there's the actual archive, if you feel like reading the whole thing.

++

Your arm aches like hell. It always has when you tried to knock out all your work in one go- a lesson you seem to keep re-learning every few months. You're pretty sure you learned it in middle school, when you decided it'd be a great idea to knock out your week's homework on Monday, and then have all week to play. It worked, but the payoff was pretty limited- none of your friends did the same thing, so while you didn't have homework, they did.

Part of you wonders, idly, where that overachieving part of you went. Merlin's happily engrossed in the tech manual- enough so that she's letting her recently-delivered mail sit. That said, an empty glass of milk and a few cake crumbs stands mute testament that, as interesting as she's finding the book, Santa's cake is still more interesting. Then again, the fact that she hasn't gone for another piece yet also speaks to the technical manual- there must be a lot of changes you didn't see in your cursory glance.

The fighter itself is due to arrive today- poor weather along the flight path postponed it overnight, along with the new strikers and Maverick and Goose, who were able to call from the Omaha airport and relay that they were socked in- no flights in or out of the midwest with that monster winter storm.

1/2
>>
Most of the squadron is making the best of the downtime- the exceptions being Katya and Ice, both of whom are off at the aggressor squadron's offices, talking with Viper. Slider's been playing around most of the day in a pair of F/A-18 strikers- or so she says, though you don't know that for sure yourself. Even after flying with them for so long, the concept of being able to 'play around' in strikers still boggles your mind- there's no way you'd get clearance to do the same thing in a -14 or the Wyvern.

Still, you'll be able to do the same, or close enough, soon. You're mostly done- a few short reports and evaluations to fill out, and that pesky letter to Konstantina to write, and that's it, you're caught up. Most of those aren't critical- yet- but knocking them out early wouldn't hurt. Of course, then again, you could also get Merlin's opinion on the new Wyvern, or you could go hit up the pool again and take it easy- it's pretty empty this time today, since everyone's at work, and dad always said soak it up while you can, cos when it gets crazy you'll wish you had.

[] Well.... Suppose I should be responsible. Let's get this paperwork done.
[] Merlin's opinion is going to be a hell of a lot more informed than mine right now, let's see what she thinks about our new bird.
[] Ok, we're done with this inside shit. Let's go to the pool kiddo.

[x] Well.... Suppose I should be responsible. Let's get this paperwork done.

The last couple pieces of paperwork- well, the last couple pieces you think of as legitimate- go down in less than an hour. That just leaves the letter.

Somehow, you get the impression that somewhere, a god is using your life as a comedy show right now.

Normally, you'd try and write something... relatively normal, but it's hard to figure out just what qualifies as 'normal' in this case. Do you return the sentiment in her last letter? Do you keep it business like? Kinda hard to call when the intended recipient is... well, kind of crazy, judging by her interactions with you so far.

Merlin, meanwhile, has called up her magical... computer... thing, and is working on it, looking back at the tech manual as she works. Girl's a technophile, that much is for sure. Then again, you're not sure you have much room to say anything about it- you'd be reading the thing too, if she hadn't gotten to it first.

Still. This letter needs done. You're not sure how to go about it.

[] Write a love letter back. She'll talk a lot more if she thinks you're interested too, right? (Romeo Option)
[] Write about your road trip and talk about how great the freedom of the open road is. (AMERICA! Option.)
[] Write a relatively mundane letter, like you would to family. (Safe middle ground! Maybe.)
>>
>>24555272
A wasted update? It gives Merlin time to finish reading the manual so that when we ask her about it later she has more complete knowledge.
Finishing the letter gets ONI off our backs. Once paperwork is done we can relax with the twins and Rosalie.

And that's assuming it gets done instead of interrupted somehow.
>>

[] Write about your road trip and talk about how great the freedom of the open road is. (AMERICA! Option.)

[] Write a love letter back. She'll talk a lot more if she thinks you're interested too, right? (Romeo Option)

For a while, you've got a desire, stemming from who knows where, to write a letter filled with motorcycles, Bald eagles, hamburgers, and bacon. And beer. And bikinis.

But then the part of your brain you've designated “the dickbutt” takes over, and you find yourself cross referencing Romeo and Juliette, which, for some reason, you have on hand.

You manage to throw in plenty of references to America- Bald eagles soaring majestically are compared to her flight in strikers, the power and glory of the great rivers compared only to her strength. You're not sure it'll work, but about halfway through, you find yourself enjoying it. Honestly, it's so over the top that it's hard not to- you can't help but smile at the lines comparing her beauty to the stunning vistas of the rocky mountains.

Not that you've ever really enjoyed the rocky mountains- seems like every time you've been through there, it was up in Montana, where the word empty seems to fit nicely.

Reading back over the final product makes you smile, then chuckle. You're banking a lot on her insanity affecting her judgment, especially since flowery crap has never been your thing.

Merlin looks over her shoulder at you, pausing whatever she's doing for a minute.

“Frank, did you read this manual? This plane is amazing!”

[] I hadn't had the chance, really. What's so great about it?

But yeah Katya's fans are causing her to get a disportonate amount of screen time, considering how little Rosaile (sp), Maverick, and Goose get.

[x] I hadn't had the chance, really. What's so great about it?

You shake your head, setting the letter aside. You're going to look for a couple of Polaroids- or maybe pose for one or two- before you send it off. If you're going to do an over the top love letter, you might as well make it truly over the top, you figure.

“Haven't really had the chance, Merlin. What's it got going on?” You say. “I noticed they deleted our hardpoints, can't say I'm thrilled about that.”

Merlin nods. “Yeah, they deleted those to increase the 'stealth characteristics'. They added some conformal weapons bays, but we can't carry that much in them. But what's really neat is the computers. Look!”

Her little computer pops into being right in front of your face, causing you to frown and jerk back by reflex. “Sorry.” Merlin says, backing it off a bit. “See?”

“The hell's wrong with the canopy? That's not plexi, and what's all those little hexagons?” You mutter, trying to look closer.

Merlin giggles. “They're calling it 'connection for flight interface.' I've kinda made up some parts on what you're seeing, but if what I'm reading is right, it'll give you full three hundred sixty spherical vision unimpeded- look at how it's on the bottom side, too. “ the little image on the screen rotates.

1/2
>>
“Looks like the guns moved a bit.” You say, scratching your chin. They're still pretty close together, but they've been spaced out more to make room for those little hexagonal plates.

Merlin nods. “Mhmm. Same guns though, and they're fed from the same bins, so there's no change there.”

“So that's it? They deleted our hard points and paved over our canopy?” You ask, causing Merlin to giggle again.

“Not at all. There's also something they're calling the 'Naval Combat Network' system in here, and it's apparently part of something bigger, but really, really classified.

“Any idea what it's about?” You ask, wondering about it yourself. A classified network system? Hardly unusual, but it's weird to be across multiple branches.

Merlin shrugs. “Not entirely, but the idea is that anyone with it can share information with anyone else. Ours is tweaked for witches, but I'm not sure what that means just yet.” She says. “The weapons are coming from something called project Garuda, but that's the only information on them I could find.”

“Garuda, huh?” You ask. “No other information on them?”

Merlin shakes her head. “S-sorry. No.”

[] Oh well, just makes it more fun when we learn about them! Let's hit the pool.

You shrug. “Oh well, no worries. Just makes it more fun when we start testing them! Let's go to the pool!”

Merlin nods, closing the heavy manual and dismissing her computer. “I think Rosalie was down there earlier.” She says, standing up and stretching. “Give me a minute to go get my swimsuit on, ok?”

You nod, stretching yourself and putting letter off to the side of the paperwork. You're pretty sure you earned a break this time.

The pool is mostly deserted- the twins are in the water, predictably, and Rosalie is working on her tan- in the middle of January, no less. Gotta love southern California for that, you think. Other than them, and an incredibly bored looking lifeguard, the place is empty.

Merlin puts her things down on a chair near Rosalie, and the French witch greets her briefly before she climbs down into the pool- while she's not as in love with the water as the twins, the kid can swim pretty well.

Rosalie, supposedly, will be flying chase- she's an experienced test pilot, having been in on the French Rafale program- but you've also heard her mention something about flying as an aggressor witch as well, so you're not sure. In theory she could do both, but it'd be almost as bad as constant combat flights.

[x] Chat with Rosalie some! She's got test pilot experience, maybe she'll have some useful advice.

You decide that sometimes, learning from someone that's been there is better than any other option- even if, as in this case, it's with a completely different platform.

“Heya Rosalie.” You greet, lounging back in the chair.

“Oh, hello Frank.” She responds, pulling off her sunglasses. “Ça va?”

Your brain struggles with the French term for a second. “Uhh... oui ca va?” You respond. “Is that right? Been a while since I took French.”

She laughs lightly. “Close enough, I think. What's on your mind Frank? You look like you want to talk.”

“You a mind reader now?” You chuckle, then shake your head. “No, nothing I'm worried about. Just looking for advice on this test series coming up.”

She nods. “Ah, oui. I'll be flying chase for you on some flights, I think, but mostly I'll be helping Ice and Slider with their tests.” She smiles. “The thing to remember with new strikers is the engines usually change. It can be... unpleasant, learning a new one.”

[x] “how so?”

“How so?” You ask, leaning forward.

Rosalie makes a face. “It's like... “ She sighs. “It's hard to describe. New engines and strikers tend to take and use magical energy... differently. In the old days, it was nothing, my grandmother says. The old type of engines weren't that demanding. Turbines though....”

She shrugs. “New strikers use a lot of energy, but they use it for all kinds of different things. In the old days, it was shields, engine, radio, maybe weapon, yes?”

You nod, following so far.

“Today, it's many more things. You still have the first four, but now there's electronic sensors, countermeasures, that sort of thing.” She ticks the systems off on her fingers. “And each manufacturer likes to make them use power differently, so....”

“So it's a real pain in the ass?” You helpfully supply, keeping an eye on Merlin. You trust the twins with your life, sure. But you don't trust them not to corner Merlin just to mess with her.

She nods. “That is one way of saying it, yes. Each witch, she is different, oui? Some of them use power differently- different schools, different specialties, that sort of thing.” She pauses, then motions at Merlin and the Twins. “For example, Clarissa probably does not use her power in the same way Samantha does, even though she does the same job.”

She indicates herself next. “I do not use magic in the same way that Rachel or Tabitha do, and certainly not in the same way as Patricia. This is why I brought my strikers- it can take some time to get used to a new model.” She shrugs. “It is hard to explain, I'm sorry. Magic is like sound- if you are born with it, it's hard to describe it to someone who has never had it.”

Since GNOME is a thing, we will need as much info as we can get our hands on.

[x] It's ok. I'm just worried for Merlin's sake anyway.

I feel it'd be honest and I think she'd like to hear some concern over our partner.

This has actually been somewhat illuminating.
It means that putting a Witch into Strikers she's unfamiliar with could drastically make her performance worse.
>>
>>24561852
Wouldn't that be implied though? I mean, it's not like Fronk can strap on magical plane legs with no pants and go dance with the rainbows.

Although that would make a hilarious image to send to Konstantina, if it'd work

Besides, we don't have parts or techs qualified for ruskie kit anyway.
>>

they could have gotten all the data they wanted from the person who actually fucking flew them, goddamn paranoid bureaucratical retards, if they just asked, but the probably wasted 400 trillion dollars trying to figure out the size of the russian bolts and screws

Have better luck asking the ground crew chief than the pilot, dude.
>>
>>24562280
She'd know general flight characteristics, but there'd be some things that they'd have to test for. I'm guessing they either did debrief her or will debrief her in the future on her own experiences with them
>>
>>24562280
Can you tell me the exact construction details of your car? Of course you can't.
It's the same with planes. The pilot's job is to fly the bird, and they no doubt know how it performs, but they (usually) won't know details about construction. The ground crew are the ones who know how it's put together.

Same with the US. Over the course of the Cold War the US got around a dozen Mig-21's. Do you how many they flew? This one, that's it. The rest where torn apart.

[x] No, no. I learned a lot, actually. I think I get it.

“No, no.” You quickly assure her. “I learned a lot, actually. I think I get it.”

You grin. “Ya know, a lot of people think I should be a lot better with this kind of thing, cos we've got a lot of witches in the family.” You shrug yourself, sitting up and shooting a glare at Alyssa, who's awful close to Merlin. Too close, in your opinion.

“Mom really never let us know- she didn't hide it, exactly, but she didn't use it at all. And Jessica, I mean...” You laugh. “It just brought out the hyper in her some more, I think. And she wasn't exactly the best teacher ever.”

Rosalie smiles, then motions to Merlin again. “She is an unusual one, non? She is easily most of our equals- I think she may be the strongest among us in many ways. But yet, she cannot operate strikers.”

You look over at Merlin and nod. “Yeah, it's one of her big hang-ups. Seems to think that that's what define a witch.”

Rosalie laughs lightly. “Most girls do. There is more to it though, and even the weakest witches are just as good in their own roles.” She follows your gaze, watching Merlin and the twins. “I have overheard Tabitha and Rachel talking about her. They seem to agree with me that she is far stronger than she initially appears, and that it has something to do with her jet- and you.”

Overhead, the roar of a pair of jets drowns out conversation, followed almost immediately thereafter by the higher pitched sound of Strikers. Looking up, you miss the jet, but there's a whole gaggle of aircraft landing- looks like there's jets stacked up quite a ways.

[] That'd be our new ride, I'll bet. 'Cmon Merlin, let's go poke around.
[] Ah, screw it. They'll come get me soon enough anyway.

But if we're in the chair we can't pick up Merlin and run around making airplane noises.

solution: we sit her on our shoulders while seated in our chair. on our plane

and give her real aeroplane rides
>>

Step 1: attach chair to plane
Step 2: sit in chair
Step 3: place Merlin on shoulders
Step 4: Take off, make airplane noises.
Step ?: ????????????

[x] Ah, screw it. They'll come get me soon enough anyway.

You lean back in your chair again, closing your eyes and letting the sun warm you- it's not cold, not by a long shot, though it's far from tropical. Still, it's nice as hell out, and you'd rather just enjoy the day.

You're joined before too long by Slider- fresh out of her strikers, it looks like. She thumps down on the chair next to yours, nodding a greeting to Rosalie.

“Your jet's here.” She says, nonchalantly.

“Yup.” You respond, hardly moving.

She glances over at you. “I'm almost surprised you're not breaking down the fence to get there and ogle it.”

“Nope.”

“Hmm. Just taking it easy, then?” She asks.

“Yup.” You wait almost half a minute. “Put 'em away, Slider.”

A slight shuffle- and one of the twins laughing- gives her away. “How the hell did you know?”

You shrug. “You've let me go almost three months since that flashbang. It was well past time.”

“You're no fun.” She pouts.

You'd call bullshit on it, but then you know what the twins would say.
