The former champion has demonstrable skill, and manages to stab precisely, hitting the joints of the robot. It takes a long time, but his agility underwater is too great, and eventually there is a break in the doombot's legs. Unfortunately, this leads to exposed wiring, sending sparks everywhere, which the Merman barely escapes from in time.

The crowd is cheering for him, and Namor presents him with the gold, and the medal, and congratulates him on an excellent final battle

This is, perhaps, the best outcome we could hope for.
We showed the might of Latveria by the Doomknight getting all the way up to the final match, but Atlantis, and through extension, Namor, is able to save face by having their champion still claw out a victory against the relentless machine.
Consider that the arrogant general is the one who most memorably lost; it'll be a good lesson for Atlanteans to not underestimate the prowess of the Surface, but their champion's ultimate victory let's them keep their pride and dignity.

As for us, DOOM merely needs only say that it was a machine. No match for Doom, of course, so our reputation is unsullied. But the Doomknight is more than just a symbol of DOOM; it is a symbol of the united will of the Latverian people. Behind each Doombot are the hundreds of Latverians that make it possible, and that their resolve is the equal of any Atlantean.

So while we are working on our self contained colonies we need to think of bigger picture Mars terraforming issues. We have several main ones, I will try to outline what I see as goals. Please feel free to add.

Magnetic Field - Mars lacks the protective magnetic field like we have on Earth, and solar winds are gradually stripping away the atmosphere. This can be solved by either somehow reigniting the core of the planet, or by placing massive superconducting lines around the equator to generate the field.

Atmosphere - Two problems here, the first is that the air pressure is too low for human habitation and it is not capable of sustaining human life. We need to start pumping in CO2 and O2. CO2 will create a greenhouse effect to warm the planet, and the oxygen will let us breath. We can probably get the base components from our asteroid mining projects. We could use nanobots to alter the atmosphere for us.

Temperature - Martian temperature will swing wildly. Adding CO2 will give us a buffer, but still is a problem. Mirrors to redirect sunlight

Decaying Moon Orbits - A long term issue, but it is a problem. If someone were to move against us, they could try to drop one of our moons on us. Fusion rockets to put in a more stable orbit?

Water - We've discussed some of this at length. Grab it from space.

Flora and Fauna - Gonna need some fast growing plants, and some wildlife. Wildlife will probably be less of an issue as we could clone them in Latveria and transport them. Genetic modification of plants to speed up growth process to a certain point?

Introducing water on the scale we're discussing will add a significant amount of mass.

A network of satelites placed in orbit could mount gravity generators or force field arrays to further increase the planet's mass. The force fields can also be spread thin if they're primarily electromagnetic, to produce an artificial ozone layer or magnetosphere to protect the planet while the other changes take effect. The forcefield can also double as tractor/repulsor beams to gently nudge the moons into a more stable orbit.

Magneto should have plenty of insight into how to jump-start the magnetosphere.

We also need to consider the types of flora and fauna we'll import. We're going to have to carefully engineer the burgeoning ecosystem as we construct it. Possibly with some genetic augmentation of the plants to increase nutritional value and life cycle.
