Predator Quest ep 8

You are Three-Claw, a Yautja hunter of the Cloud Viper clan. You have been tasked by your clan Matriarch to embark on a hunt on the world of Fey'lenn, or Pandora, as it is known to humans.

The previous quest thread is archived here:

http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/24502825/

Having faced and defeated your first Na'vi, you now proceed inside the chasm which leads towards the hive.

The smell of burnt flesh still fills the air.

You set your vision mask to subterrain analysis mode and quickly map out the various tunnels around you.

It seems this chasm is the only viable entrace with a natural ramp descending to the dark pits below. It may be worth it to mine the area.

Do you:

A. Deploy a few mines in remote detonation mode near the entrance.
B. Deploy a few mines in proximity detonation mode near the entrance.
C. Continue onward without mining.

PS: Don't be alarmed if the updates today come a bit slower than usual. I'll be on a train for the next... oh... 4 hours, and 3G may cut in and out.
>>
>>24542163
Additionally (and I'll add this to the original image) our trophy list includes:

1. Dead chestburster (the whole thing)
2. Warrior Drone tail
3. Synthetic head
4. 3 palm-sized Fish teeth
5. Na'vi head with attached spine

>>
>>24542355
>>24542355
You grab a few mines from your dispensor and place them around the chasm and set them to be detonated remotely.

A casual analysis suggestes that the mines are suffcient to collapse the entire entrance if detonated at once.

You engage your cloaking systems and proceed forward.

You spot, along the way, two Na'vi corposes and a few dead drones.

You continue and find the remains of an APC, its interior gutted and its synthetic crew dead. You hear a firefight ahead.

You come upon an overhang where the ramp turns sharply to the left. Below you, you spot an APC and a small squad of Na'vi desperately holding off a hard-meat assault from all directions. It's evident they were left as a rearguard for the taskforce up ahead. You'll need to find a way past them at some point.

Do you:

A. Sneak past them and proceed along the ramp to your left.
B. Use your plasma caster to aid the Weyland forces.
C. Use your plasma caster to destroy the APC.

You uncloak and lock your plasma caster to the moving black masses and open fire at full power.

Each shot from your overcharged caster rocks the ground beneath and churns up ripples of gore and ichor.

One of the Na'vi look in your direction for a moment, but quickly resumes his fighting stance as a new wave of hard-meat swarms up from below.

Your vision mask identifies a total of 28 xenos in all. It is not likely the Weyland forces will survive this one, but you can use this time to thin the horde.

Roll D20 +8 to determine out how many you take down. Highest of 1st 3 rolls will be counted.

You roll 19+8 = 27.

You methodically fire shot after shot into the swarm and time your shots with the chattering of the APC's autocannon.

Several warrior drones attempt to break off and flank the high ground, but you spot them easily and blow them apart. Soon, the ground is littered with bits and pieces of the black beasts. One last warrior drone makes a vain attempt to make for the overhang, but a hail of autocannon fire easily cuts it down. The cavern is quiet, for now. Two of the Na'vi turn their rifle in your direction, but you've already engaged cloak and retreated to the ramp on your left.

You make your way down to the Weyland rearguard in stealth and approach them from the rear. They seem to be busy reloading their weapons and patching up corroded armor on the APC.

Do you:

A. Attempt to sneak past them. (DC: Easy)
B. Place the remainder of your mines in remote detonation near the APC. (DC: Medium)
C. Open fire with your plasma casters upon the APC. (DC: Medium-hard)
>>

A. Attempt to sneak past them. (Pass, vs. DC: 6)

You quiety circle behind the Weyland forces and proceed foward.

You come across a deep gap bridged with a series of metal beams deployed by Weyland forces. You spot a few Na'vi corposes on the other side of the bridge.

You proceed further and note eight hard-meat corpses before you. You scan the area with your vision mask and spot a trail of discarded shell casings. You follow the trail and spot a Weyland Sentry gun jutting out of a nearby outcropping, well hidden from view.

You are currently outside of its cone of fire, and can easily destroy it, or you can circle around and climb over the outcropping to avoid it and leaving it intact.

Do you:

A. Destroy it with your plasma caster
B. Circle around it.

You climb over and around the outcropping and easily avoid the sentry gun.

A long and dark tunnel extends before you. Parts of it seem man-made. You guess this was once the underground portion of the installation you saw above. Parts of broken ramps and hooks suggest this was once a loading bay for large vehicles.

The tunnel takes a gradual downward turn as you proceed.

You hear rapid spurts of gunfire and the chattering of several heavy weapons far ahead.

You also notice a side door built into the tunnel wall. A short scan with your vision mask indicates the door leads to a series of tight maintenance vent shafts extending along the main tunnel.

Do you:

A. Proceed along the main tunnnel

Deciding the maintenance shafts to be too constricting, you proceed along the main tunnel.

The gunfire far ahead intensifies as you move further. Suddenly, you hear a loud clang behind you. You turn to find a vent cover lying on the ground. You quickly look up, and spot multiple drones exiting the opening above. A new weapon begins to chatter. It's the sentry gun you passed a moment ago.

Do you:

A. Open fire with your plasma caster at the vent above you. (DC: Medium)
B. Sprint down the shaft while laying mines behind you. (DC: Medium-Easy)

They dive towards your position. Two take up positions in front of you and one lands behind you.

Do you:

A. Try ot get off one plasmacaster shot before you're forced into melee. (DC: Medium-hard)

The hard carapaces collide hard into each other and the momentum drives all three masses forward. As you build momentum, you suddenly give the impaled beast a mighty kick and send both it and its brethren tumbling forward.

We usually run very unencumbered, but xeno heads are pretty big and heavy, which is why I wouldn't recommend taking too many head/spines of things.

The head and spine of the na'vi was a matter of pride because we were happy with that one, this head is simply because it's damn convenient (and fingers are fast to remove too).
>>
If we do kill the queen then after taking a trophy we should vaporize the rest of her with plasma caster, then sabotage WY on the way out but not collapse entrance.
That way they would waste a lot of lives and resources scouring this hive drone by drone in hope of finding her.

>>

Looking forward to it.
>>
>>24544864
Probably not as it brings ranged weapons to a fight where opponents don't have ranged weapons.

Using it to kill her drones and praetorians would be fine, but we'd better not be taking trophies from them, using it on her would basically be the same as being served a 5 star meal at an amazing restaurant with accredation from top chefs and food reviewers all over the world... then standing up at the table, dropping your pants and pissing on it and walking away.

>>
>>24544864
No idea I think the main thing is we have to make it an even match.
>>
>>24544895
Plasma Casters are an Honorable Weapon, as they are allowed on hunts. However, due to their power they are the least honorable of the standard Hunt weapons.
With this enhanced, 6+ Year old queen however I'm pretty sure it'd be more honorable then normal, seeing as a Normal Queen can fuck a predator up pretty damn easily, and we're still freshly blooded.
>>
>>24545025
Pretty much this. Using the Caster may not get us ULTIMATE BADASS GLORY, but its still a Queen. And lets be honest, unless we manage to isolate it and contrive some hilariously elaborate sequence of traps, the thing would probably just skullfuck us if we tried to kill it in melee.
>>
>>24545025
Given our youth and relative inexperience I imagine that many preds would just silently nod if we torched the queen with a plasma caster.

"Why'd you do it" "Because I'd rather keep a planet with such abundant game and diversity of prey intact than seek personal glory in combat with a hardmeat queen".

Now we'd probably be considered very fucking strange amongst our peers for that decision, but our master would probably agree with it given that explanation.
>>
>>24545105
wait, isn't this the hive where our father got killed?
Its not just A queen, its the one who killed dad when he was at his prime and the colony was young.

Also, we could injure it with plasma and then finish it with something else...
>>
>>24545136
Would still fuck up our 'glory' from the kill. as >>24545123 said, many preds would understand it, but they likely wouldn't agree with it.
>>
>>24545136
>>24544864
>>24544935
It's basically the same as admitting that we don't possess the skill to kill it. The caster is used almost exclusively as a defensive weapon or as a tool for destroying things we don't intend to hunt or claim trophy from.
>>
We could argue humility, as in "when younger it killed <dad> a veteran hunter, I would not underestimate it and overestimate myself".

however I concede we should use the caster only on others and finish the queen with traditional weapons.
>>
>>24545271
Can we actually take a queen on in melee though? I mean we just finished our trails a few days ago it's kind of a big step to be going 1v1 with a queen.
>>
>>24545271
I agree with not finishing it off with a caster, but with that thing bearing down on us I'll probably be okay with us blowing one of its legs off at least.
>>
>>24545286
I think we should aim for a headshop snipe with a spear caster and then draw it into traps if it survies.

>>24545196
We don't have the skill to kill it in melee. We'd get our ass kicked by a normal Queen, they can fucking go hand to hand with Power Loaders and still come out with the advantage. This is a queen born from the shit on Pandora, and that has had 6+ Years to mature and grow.
We need to be cunning and clever beyond normal to beat it, which means using everything we have to our advantage including the Mines and Plasma caster.

We don't want pic related to happen because people are stupid enough to engage it in hand to hand.
>>
>>24545342
You are right in retrospect.
We still get the glory of clearing out a hive and killing a queen even if it was with mines and casters.
It beats dying and honestly even with caster and mines it can very well kill us.
>>
>>24545388
Well hopefully we get to see the Queen in combat with somebody else before hand so we can judge how tough it is before we decide to make our move.
>>
>>24545449
We can already judge how strong it is though, based on previously seen examples and the strength of the Warriors we've already faced.
>>
>>24545449
>Watch it flip over a tank and punch it to death.

Pandoran queens make carnifexes cry.
>>
>>24545538
The only Pandoran forms we've faced so far are runner and drone variants. God only knows what sort of crazy shit the actual warrior-forms might be sporting, let alone the damn Queen.
>>
>>24545631
So we have, hrm. That means the warriors are probably backed off and protecting the deeper chambers with the Praetorians.
Still that only furthers my point, though I agree that hopefully we get to watch WY fight it. It'd help us come up with a plan.

The *surviving* warriors. We did nuke this place and a lot of them would have gone up in flames.

I'm in favour of holing up somewhere near the queen and waiting for the synthetics and natives to try and take it on. We only participate in the battle enough to keep the balance of strength between them equal, then we deal with the Queen.

I've just finished reading the archives. Guys, this is awesome.

How often/ what time does this quest happen?
>>
>>24549313
From the looks of it every night or so? I just caught up today as well, was so happy to catch a live thread for the small amount of time I had to participate. Really good writing and a great setting.
>>
>>24549313
Late night every day or two
>>
>>24549313
I try to have a regular schedule, but I've got a thesis to hand in a few weeks so some days I need to take a break for real life.

As far as scheduling goes though -

1. I'll try to announce when the next session will be.
2. Friday and Sat nights are 90% good to go for quest nights.
>>
>>24549667
Perhaps use a twitter account and let people know a little in advance when you think you might run? Seems to have worked really well for a few other quest runners.
>>
>>24549709
this, twitter is a convenient thing to check, instead of trawling the board catalog looking for the OP image, having a Quest/OP twitter is becoming more common with quest runners
>>
>>24549709
Yes, sure. I'll set something up!

Rest assured though - I do have at least the Pandoran arc somewhat planned out and have every intention of running it to the end.

Excellent, thank you all for the responses.

As for the current issue of the Queen....

It's quite likely that she'll be too much for us...now. However, a feral unchecked queen from Pandora's environment is like the holy grail of hard meat hunting grounds.

Cloud-Viper would profit much from this information.

I say we take a warrior as a trophy then prevent WY from fucking with this hunting ground anymore.

Our Matriarch can decide what to do with this information. She's already praised us for not being all about the glory. And while we'd certainly be deemed 'ultimate badass' is we succeeded, it's about as likely as Weyland being able to successfully contain their Xenomorph experiments.

Would there be anyway to send a message/ transmission back home?
>>
>>24549780
well what did the big scary girl say specifically about a possible infestation? wipe it out, scout it, etc? i cant remember
>>
>>24549780
You have a good point. This is after all a fact finding mission and the super queen probably is a bit much right now. I am a little sad about missing out on the glory but as you said, the fact that we can put that aside is something we've been praised for. Best not to look like fools.

>>24549815
Basically go to planet, get info.
>>
>>24549830
>Basically go to planet, get info.

To that end, it would be best if the infestation was contained to the planet, and that WY does not get ahold of the queen, and of its materials or any specimens leave the planet, we don't want to spread the Pandoran hard meat elsewhere yet.

following the WY forces into the hize and gathering intel/recording WY's progress and battles would be very useful to determine WY's capabilities and that of the mutated xenos, if WY proves capable of capturing the queen or other living specimens we need to stop that happening, regardless of whether the queen or specimens live, the infestation needs to be contained until we are told otherwise
>>
>>24549815
Interestingly, it seems that the Matriarch didn't mention any hard meat infestation even though she knew full well about it.

Does our helmet have a camera or some sort of visual recorder? Even getting a picture of this bitch would be great.
>>
>>24549921
agreed.
>>
>>24549940
>Does our helmet have a camera or some sort of visual recorder?
if so, we need to be recording everything we've done/seen, fuck the glory, the mission comes first

for we are Operedator, the predator operator
>>
>>24549921
Regardless, i say we exact revenge on WY. Not only do they tamper with our hunt, but they are responsible for the death of Dad, the Silent Hunter (with a ship that leveled mountains....he spoke softly and carried the biggest stick).

It'd be great if we could cause a revolt amongst the natives. It'd also be ded' cunnin',
>>
>>24549966
I can't wait until the Matriarch has us start hunting the Bad Bloods.
>>
>>24549982
>revenge
oh this is a given, regardless of what happens, we are not leaving the planet without honouring FUCK YOU AMERICAN ENGLISH, HONOUR HAS A 'U' IN IT our dad
>>
>>24549940
>>Does our helmet have a camera or some sort of visual recorder?
>if so, we need to be recording everything we've done/seen, fuck the glory, the mission comes first

Yes. The vision mask has a recording link with our shipboard computer.
>>
>>24549940
>>24549966
All helmets come with inbuilt record replay functions of audio and video. It can also attempt to decode language as well if there's enough samples.

Basically the preds were a young stone age-ish tribal society that stumbled upon the holy grail of all technology, and managed to get it to a point where they could re-create anything they wanted, but they've never really bothered to sit down and figure out their technology, which is why innovation is rather rare (and the preds that do innovate are typically old bored hunters). Yes they could take apart an engine and put it back together, but they've never really bothered to understand why it works.

Also their society has prettymuch stayed at stone-age levels too.
>>
>>24550054
soo they are baddass bloodthirsty honourable Ad-Mech?

awesome
>>
>>24550066
More like feral desert deathworlders that found a fully functioning full stc library. And then they used this *full* STC library to go out hunting.

They've reverse engineered everything to the point of 'understand how to make it, understand how to fix it, but not necessarily why it works - innovation is rare because no one actually bothers'
>>
>>24550142
One of the AVP comics explained how preds don't really have scientists, but they have plenty of engineers.

They do improve designs and make them more efficient, but there's no drive in seeking out new theories or principles.
>>
>>24550238
Exactly. You may get a better plasma caster, but you seldom get a whole new design.

Same thing goes with weapons for hunting, you may get combi-sticks etc that an old hunter has played around with and personalized... but you seldom see a pred with a whole new weapon.
>>
>>24549921
What are the rules concerning using our honor device as a non last ditch weapon?

We also have one fission torpedo left right?

I want to nuke WY from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.
>>
>>24550655
we have 1 torpedo left, lets keep the honour device as just that, we don't want to die without it

also, I'm pretty sure we can use the WY ships reactors do be pretty effective in the place of a torpedo should we need it
>>
>>24550691
Good idea.

Is it possible at all for use to repair the plasma bore? I don't remember if it's irrepairable.
>>
Sage goes in all fields.

Sick of shitposting like this thread.
>>
>>24550820
you do realise you can hide/filter out the thread?
>>
>>24550820
hide it and move on dumb ass. Create a filter for quests and leave us be.
>>
>>24550655
No rules - entirely discretionary in fact.

The pred in AVP went 'oh shit, hive getting out of control" and so blew the thing... but it means dying without the device and thats a very bad idea with WY around
>>
>>24550846
>>24550859

Hiding isn't permanent.
People shouldn't have to rely on filters.

Quest threads are fine in moderation, it's just that so many quest threads are popping up - especially ones like this which aren't particularly good.
Poorly written.
Very little effort put in.

Ignore him and move on. The quest isn't on right now so it isn't that important. Let's continue the discussion.

I wonder what was in the underwater shaft? Why would the WY need a naval base? Maybe that's another entrance we can use in the future.
>>
>>24551106
>underwater shaft
you really need to ask that question?

we could almost feel the sheer terror of the beasts down there

I imagine if shit really goes to pot we could lure the queen into a fight with the king of fis

but that would be an insult to the king FIS, the queen is nowhere near a worthy challenge to such a mighty FIS

That's a great idea actually! All we'd need to do is get in the water with both of them....hmmmm

Reminds me of the super pred from the Predators movie. The information that came with his figure mentioned he believed the hunt needed to evolve, and so he made that cool robo-falcon thing. Guys like him are kind of one-in-a-million when it comes to Yautja.
>>
>>24552402
3 claws could be one of those preds that goes 'hey, hey... I've got this wonderful new idea".
>>
>>24552431
We did focus him on Cunning. Could be fun to turn this part-time to a 'Predator Engineer Quest'.

i see no problem with this at all, as long as we can keep being OperatorPredator while on missions not hunts, the mission before the glory
