I had a thought yesterday about the Prometheans.

I don't think that trying to understand the word was the huge thing that fucked up some of their members to which Carl referred.

Sure, it would probably be bad, but there's something else they could have done. Something that would give them so much more power than simply learning the Word.

They tried to modify their souls to consume other souls in a manner similar to YHWH. It fits with the whole "flying too close to the sun" thing, and has so much more potential for catastrophic failure. If you actually succeed, you piss off God.
