Little later than I wanted today. Now with stats and rolling by popular demand. Based loosely off Mutants and Masterminds 3. The first roll made AFTER a choice marked "Chance" will be accepted for the Quest. You have 3 Hero Points at the beginning of every thread. You can choose to spend one to reroll any roll, with a minimum result before modifiers of 10.

You're sitting in your undershirt and boxers at your table in the kitchen of your shabby, three room apartment. In front of you is the bowl of off-brand Bran Flakes and 2% milk that you're sure is in the middle of expiring. Across from you is your new partner, Artemis the Hunting Witch. While her magic-born psychological problems have been ostensibly kept under control, it is still unsettling to have her here. Crimson eyes gaze at you from behind her black hair, and have been upon you since you stumbled out of bed. You did not get much sleep last night thanks to those eyes. Though they lack the telltale glow of magical power at the moment, their piercing glare kept you awake for hours.
You're not sure that you would have signed up for Silence, the world-wide organization which polices Witches and the supernatural, had you known that you would be housing and babysitting this woman...

You take another bite of your soggy meal and notice that her eyes have finally disengaged themselves from your own and fallen upon your bowl. You don't think she's eaten anything since yesterday. Hell, you don't think she's even slept. Everything from her tie, to her muffler, and even her stockings are still in the same pristine condition they were when she got here.
This silence has finally gotten to you. You decide to speak up for the first time today...

Artemis snaps her head up at your voice. After a moment spent in thought, the witch takes a deep breath.

"That's classified."

For a moment, you sit stupefied, and then attempt to come up with another way to phrase it.

"What are your particulars?"

"Top secret."

"What were your Witch Assessment Scores?"

"Above your paygrade."

"Your three sizes?"

"A gentleman doesn't ask that."

The eerie quiet of the room resurfaces as you keep wracking your brain for a way to get the information you need without running into another dead end with Artemis.

"I can offer you relative information, if it will increase our compatibility on the field. Would you like a relative assessment of my skills in relation to other Choked Witches at Silence?"

You drop your spoon and lean back, giving a sigh. Wasn't that obviously what you were asking? What kind of red tape are you looking at here? You give Artemis a nod and she gets up from her chair, taking a few practice breaths and putting a hand to her chest.

"Lifting Strength: F, Running Speed: F, Jumping Distance: F, Core Body Strength: F, Marksmanship: F, CQB Assesment: F, Enchantment Skill: F, Suggestion Skill: C, Familiar Skill: C, Defensive Skill: D, Offensive Skill: A+, Counter Skill: A+."

Well, that was a mouthful. You were basically able to gather that you can't rely on Artemis for physical tasks, but she is top of her class at breaking things and suppressing magical phenomenon. You suppose that's what they meant by Hunting Witch...

A little while later, you've finished dressing yourself. For a moment, you hear the ringing of your cell phone and peek your head out, but you chalk it up to little sleep and finish up your morning routine. You leave the bathroom after a few minutes to find Artemis has answered your phone for you. You begin to object but she snaps your device shut and holds it out for you to take.

"John T. Colt," she begins,"You have received an assignment. You are to appear at Headquarters in roughly fort-yfive minutes and report to Chief Branson for duty. That is all."

You take your phone and place it in your coat pocket, making a mental note to hide your devices in the future, lest Artemis help yourself to your things in your absence.

After a short drive, you arrive at Silence HQ. As you enter the building, a woman in a white coat approaches you. You can't see her face very well through those coke-bottle frames, but you can read the ID Badge pinned to her coat just fine. Selene Erikson, Psych. Dept.

"Good morning, Selene." You almost jump. Did Artemis just initiate a social encounter?

"Good Mooorning~! Did you miss me, baby?" This must be the therapist assigned to Artemis. You hold out your hand and try to greet the woman, but she ignores you.

"I heard you went to a man's house! Are you alright? Nothing happened did it?"

"I was terrified," Artemis begins, though her flat voice doesn't lend any credence to it. "He forced me to spend the night at his residence and this morning he inquired about my Bust, Waist, and Hip sizes. I feel my virtue is in danger around this man."

Artemis glances back at you and cowers, though with her blank face, it isn't that convincing.

"Oh! Hello there! Nice to meet you!" It seems the good doctor has finally noticed you. How should you approach this person?

You keep your cool and hold out your hand once more. No reason to get worked up over a thing like this.

"I'm Agent John T. Colt. I'll be Artemis' handler from now on. It's good to meet the other half of my team."

Selene takes your hand and gives it a firm shake. She reaches up with her other hand to wipe away a crocodile tear.

"I suppose it had to happen eventually. They grow up so fast, you know! I can remember when I changed her diaper and her first Christmas and now I have to give her away to some man."

She sniffles and clasps her other hand over your own.

"She's a delicate flower, you hear me? You best treat her right or I'll skin you alive and use what's leftover as a rug."

She's smiling, but you get the feeling that she's being very sincere at this point. You reassure her that you'll treat Artemis as a valued partner and fellow member of Silence.
After a few minutes of smalltalk, you check your watch and find that you're going to be late if you don't hurry to meat Chief Branson. You glance over to Artemis and motion for her to follow, but she shakes her head.

"I must undergo a full evaluation with Selene. I shall remain on standby in the Psych. Department until you are ready for me to accompany you again."

You guess that's good enough and head for Chief Branson's office. You want to know what would cause him to call you personally.

You enter the Chief's office as you have hundreds of times before, glancing over the wall to wall awards, placards, and degrees that this man has no doubt earned in his years of service at Silence. Branson, as usual, has his sunburned and scarred face twisted up into a scowl, and a pair of reading glasses that are far too small for this giant rest upon his nose. In his hand is a newspaper. You read the headline: "Foreign Sensation! Death Metal Princess Rocks World." Given your line of work, it's hard to consider such things as truly being worthy of the headlines. You announce yourself to Branson, who sets the paper down.

"Goddamn crosswords are getting harder every day? Can you think of a fourteen letter word for consternation and crippling self loathing?"

You shake your head.

"Oh well. Guess I'll be breaking out the thesaurus later. Anyway, come here, I want to show you something." He holds up the paper and points to a line on the back pages.

"Street gang war finally over," you read out loud.

That sounds like good news to you, so you question Branson further. In response, he opens up another page.

"Look at this tag, here. Now I don't keep up with the youngsters today, but doesn't that look a bit peculiar?"

You look closer and, he's correct. That's not a gang symbol, that's a Ward. This is Witch business.

"I'm going to deploy you to take care of it. There's a flight leaving tonight, so clear your schedule. Make sure you take Artemis. She has experience with this kind of thing."

You nod, finishing the meeting. You have a mission now, but there's still a long time to go before your flight. What do you do?

You decide to ask Branson if he has any more info available for you. Branson looks back up from his crossword and takes off his glasses.

"Well, this is just my guess but that kind of Ward does more than just look pretty. That's designed to keep other Witches out. You might be looking at a multiple Witch situation down there, so watch your back. Aside from that, remember that your mission is to incapacitate first. Ever witch we capture is a little bit closer we come to actually understanding what's going on in their head."

That makes sense. You make a mental note to yourself to be extra cautious and leave Branson's office.

You swing by your small cubicle to gather up the things you'll need for an extended mission, such as your earpiece, your lock-release, and your multi-tool. You'll need to hit your apartment later to collect a couple spare suits, but you have the essentials now.

You still have some time left. You could go practice at the shooting range and pick up a couple extra magazines, or you could grab a bite to eat, since they're both open now.

You decide to pay R&D a visit, wondering if they have anything that requires you to do some "Field Testing". You walk through the double doors into the dusty, grungy R&D wing of Silence HQ. Scientists, Engineers, and all kinds of experts that you could not name even if you could actually read the fine print on their nametags rush about you, carrying various bits and pieces. There are routinely loud bangs and flashes of light as the familiar energy of Etherlite arcs over your head between two oversized podiums. You see your target in the distance and pick up the pace, raising a hand to hail your favorite drinking buddy, Dr. Samworth.

The massive blob of a man known as Dr. Samworth spins in his chair and spits out a little of the beer he was drinking when he sees you.

"Colt, you bastard! Where ya been?"

With great effort, he rises from his chair and waddles over to you, wiping his beer soaked hand on his Pretty Sally Magical Miracle shirt.

"Been busy, Sam," you reply,"We need to go drinking again sometime."

"We sure as shit do, you son of a bitch!" Sam laughs and slaps you on the back.

"So what can I do for you, Colt? Let me guess, you're finally ready for my Lovely Witch Simulator, right? I tweaked the interface so now you can even kiss her through the screen!"

You give a nervous chuckle and try to change the subject...

"Oh, so you want to test some new gadgets, huh? I gotcha, I gotcha!" Sam leads you through the scientific chaos that is the R&D wing and into the Warehouse. As it's inside the complex, the Warehouse is more like a Big Room, but there was a unanimous decision to change its original name into something that sounds a bit more respectable.

Sam heads to the door and begins to unlock it. He pulls out his keychain, filled with more keys than you can count and many miniature figurines of characters you can't name. Lock after lock after lock opens, until all seventeen locks are finally open.

"After you, my friend." Sam opens the door with a flourish and allows you inside. The Warehouse is filled to the brim with devices, some new, some old, but all declared to be too expensive or unreliable to be made standard issue.

"Now you say you're going to the big city, right? What do you say to this!?" Sam pulls out a sword from a rack. It's slender single edged blade glows a deep blue.

"The Etherlite Katana! This baby will cut steel like butter, but won't even leave a bruise on a witch's delicate skin!" He switches the weapon on and it crackles with power. Well, it crackles for a few seconds before the blade shoots off the hilt and implants itself in a wall.

"Maybe not," you shake your head and try giving a suggestion, "How about something...

Sam gives you a wink and pulls out his wallet, reaching inside.

"And I swear to God, Sam, if you bring up your damn Etherlite Condoms again I will shove my foot so far up your ass you'll be upchucking leg."

Sam puts his wallet back up. He then heads over to a small safe in the wall and begins working on a combination lock. You hear him mumbling the numbers every now and again before he finally pops the thing open.

"Alright, you need something for your Witch friend, you got it. Now you know regulations, so I can only give you one of these things, but each is quality, I swear. All made by yours truly!"

Sam brings out several devices and lays them on the table in front of you. Humming a little tune to himself, perhaps to set a mood, he does a small dance and points to the first device. As far as you can tell, it's a hairclip.

"This little baby is our Witch Monitor. As long as the Witch has this clipped on, you'll be able to monitor her vitals, her relative distance from you, and it also functions as a back-up communicator. In addition, I even threw in a little mood-ring feature for free! Sadly, it was rejected because the Witches figured out how to send a painful little feedback shock through it. But you guys are on good terms, right? Nothing to worry about!"

You nod and Sam goes on to the next device. It's...a pair of gloves?

"These little babies are my T.K. Gloves. Even Witches that don't have the power to levitate objects can use these things to manipulate objects up to fifty feet away! The downside is that they don't like the rain much, so keep them dry! There's also the matter that we lost three agents to strangulation by our testing witches, but that's no biggie."

You swallow and rub your neck as Sam moves on to the final item. Its...what is this...?

You look at the strange black headband adorned with two furry ears. You ask Sam to get to the point and explain what this thing does.

Of course, the stress will build up over time, even with this device. It most often results in a cathartic eruption of stress, vented at whatever they can get their hands on. But hey, who doesn't want a witch's undivided attention?"

You put a hand to your forehead and consider your options. Well, you came all the way down here, so you might as well take something. You reach out and take...

You cover your eyes and reach out for a gadget blindly. Seizing it, you take a peek. It's the Neck...Neko...it's the cat ears. Sam seems to be elated, and starts relating to you all the user instructions and any other small and inconsequential bugs the device may have, but all you can think about is how in the hell you're going to get Artemis to wear this.

After a few more minutes of talking, you bid Sam farewell for now and check the clock. You can go get Artemis early, if you're feeling brave, or you can catch a light meal at the Cafeteria before it closes.

You decide that you're going to need a full stomach before you go see Artemis again, and head to the Cafeteria.

The smell of deep fried food fills your nose as you enter HQ's cafeteria. It's not known for great tasting food, but the cheap batter and even cheaper meat reminds you of your school days back home.

There's no line right now, so you slide up to old Joe, the cook, and order your usual portion of chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and a large, large portion of white gravy to drown it in. After receiving your tray of food and a small carton of milk, you sit down at an empty table and try to relax.

You look down at the Styrofoam tray and the cookie cutter food on it and decide o take your time, savoring the bland food and collecting your thoughts. Occasionally, another agent comes in as well and you give them a lazy wave, but you use this to take a moment to relax.

Feeling refreshed and full, you throw away your empty tray and begin to head over to the Psych. Department.

You open the double doors to the Psychiatric Department. You don't come down here much, so you take a moment to examine your surroundings. Unlike the rest of HQ, this place has a gentle, welcoming atmosphere. The usual hustle and bustle is gone, replaced by soothing music gently emanating from the speakers placed down the hall as well as cheerful nurses taking an easy pace between the rooms. There is a woodsy mosaic painted onto the white walls, and its soft greens and browns, along with the occasional burst of color from a flower, put you at ease.

Despite the calm atmosphere, you can see heavy, locked doors lining the hallway ahead of you, hinting at the dangerous occupants therein. You call over a nurse and tell her that you're here to see Selene and Artemis, and they direct you to their room.

It only takes a few minutes and a couple wrong turns before you find Selene's office, and you knock on the door.

"Yes, yes, come in! All clear~"

You let yourself in at Selene's word. The office is spacious, but cluttered. Books, whiteboards, children's toys, and various monitors and screens are strewn about haphazardly on the floor, the walls, and some are even hanging on the ceiling.

Selene is at her desk, crouched over Artemis. The witch herself seems to be absorbed in a book of some kind, but you can't read the title from here.

"Selene," Artemis speaks up, "I don't understand. You claim these men are in some kind of relationship, but one is simply abusing the other. Why does the abused man keep returning?"

"He's an M, you see?"

"M?"

"M-a-s-o-c--Oh! Look, your friend's back! Hey there!"

You try not to think too hard on what Selene might be teaching Artemis and stride into the room. You explain that you and Artemis are going to be taking a long flight soon, so you need to collect Artemis and have her prepare for the mission.

"Sure, sure. Righto! Just sit right there a minute while I fill out the paperwork."

You decide to make the best of it and see if you can't bring her around to actually liking this new piece of gear. You approach Artemis with the band behind your back. She looks up from her book at you, then sets her literature aside.

"Is there something you need, John T. Colt?"

You scratch the side of your cheek and try to figure out the best way to word this to someone under intense psychiatric care. Eventually, you give up and decide to be straightforward.

"I have a new piece of equipment for you. It's useful, and I thought it might go with your style. Hope you enjoy it."

You present the band to her and she takes it from you, inspecting it from every angle.

"Are these cat ears, John T. Colt?"

You nod, hoping that she can't smell Sam on them or something. She gives a small click of her tongue and places them on her head. The normally stationary ears begin to twitch and swivel in place. You're guessing it has something to do with the function, or perhaps you're just hoping that it isn't a useless gimmick.

Artemis looks over to a window to catch her reflection and stares silently, twisting the ears from the left to the right. Eventually, she seems to grab control over them and they calm down.

However, a moment later, you can see the air around the ears ripple. A small section is slashed out, and the ears flop forward, almost folding in half.

"Why did you do that," you ask.

"I like dogs more than cats."

You can see her whispering something into Artemis' ear, but you can't make it out from this distance.

Feeling slightly worried about what is in that doctor's head, you take Artemis and leave for the airport.
