Or, you think, You could just go home and make yourselves something there- someone's been to the base commissary already, for sure, and none of the girls tend to shop light when it comes to food.

You consider heading home for a bit- you can make waffles and bacon with the best of them- but there's nothing quite like the concept of four kinds of meat on a plate that agrees with you more right now.

Pulling off the highway turns out to not be as bad as you feared- traffic aside, it's almost noon, and the worst of rush hour is long over. The place- which would be more at home strung out on some two lane blacktop in the south, you think- looks to be fairly quiet- couple big rig trucks, a few cars, a minivan. Not much else.

You and Katya both stretch after you park the motorcycle, and you resist the urge to yawn. It's not the first all nighter you've pulled, and it surely won't be the last, but it's not like you don't get tired. Some coffee ought to fix that right up, you think, as you head inside.

Katya selects a seat at a booth near the window- there's not much to see besides the highway onramp and a runoff pond across the road, but the bar just didn't have two seats together. Some old folks occupy another booth, and a family of four sits in the other, two young kids and middle-aged parents.

The waitress, a tired-looking thirty something takes a second or three to walk on over to your booth. “What'll it be y'all?” she asks, a southern drawl marking her as clearly not from around here. Having spent time in the southeast as a kid, you can tell when a drawl like that is a fake, and this one isn't.

Katya orders before you- a plate of pancakes, bacon, a ham steak, two eggs and a glass of orange juice.

You take a second before ordering coffee and 'jimbob's favorite'- which apparently consists solely of hash browns, every kind of meat that can come from a swine ever, and eggs. And grits. And it comes with a bowl of fried apples. Jimbob, you expect, isn't a small individual.

Your suspicion is confirmed when your meal actually comes- for any other faults, this place does not short you out on food. Your revised weight estimate of this Jimbob fellow spirals upwards into the five hundred plus class.

A familiar voice interrupts your meal.

“This seat taken?” Commander Michelle Metcalf asks, sliding into the booth next to you, causing Katya to frown a bit around a mouthful of pancake.

One of them won't be coming home.” If it's meant for effect, it doesn't get a visible one from Katya, whom you've no doubt has plenty of experience with that herself. It's hard to remember, sometimes, she was flying combat missions before you graduated basic flight.

The two of you finish breakfast fairly quickly, given the amount of food- it's only been a bout an hour since you pulled off the highway. Your waitress gives you the bill- surprisingly small, given how much food there was- and you leave a fairly generous tip. You never know who it pays to be nice to, you think.

The ride the rest of the way to base takes about twenty minutes, all told, with one stop at the gate. The sailor on duty at the gate eyes your motorcycle- and Katya- with undisguised envy, but waves you through without a word.

Your housing is empty- it is still the weekend, after all- and there's no note anywhere. No telling where everyone is, but there's a boxed package addressed to you, with a return address through Edwards AFB.

Having never done that I don't even mention SWQ in SW threads on /a/ I can't speak from experience. I just don't understand what you are trying to gain by coming into a thread that is quite obviously about something that you don't enjoy (not that I'm judging your choice of entertainment) and telling everyone that it's stupid to enjoy that thing. You eye the box with some suspicion before shrugging and pulling out your pocket knife, scoffing at the 'do not cut' warning on the tape. If they didn't want you to cut it, why does it look like they did their damnedest to hermetically seal it in packing tape?

You almost jump back once it's open, but nothing comes out to get you. Inside, there's a pair of identical patches, with a stylized Wyvern clutching a struggling warrior in red armor with a hammer in it's talons, bearing the legend “dragon rider” and a gigantic three ring binder bearing the title “XF-02B mod.2 WYVERN” on the cover.

“That... is a lot of reading.” You mutter to yourself, hefting the binder. You could probably kill someone with it by dropping it a few feet onto them. Flipping the cover open experimentally reveals that first, there's three page numbering sets- pages a-d, pages I-XV, and pages 1-1500. Further glances reveal the top secret nature of the original document- plenty of blacked out sections also noting that, despite you having to operate the damn thing, you still don't need to know it's intricate details.

Nothing really stands out as major changes to you, though your eye is drawn to the apparent deletion of the underwing hard points and the two small bulges along the sides of the engine nacelles on the underside of the wing.

A hand written note taped to the inside cover reveals that your new ride should be there before the package arrives, and if it isn't, it'll be landing within the day.
