I'll probably have a short break in here somewhere for dinner, but otherwise we should be good to go tonight, haha!

Archives here: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Strike%20witches%201989 Those also contain the archives for tank witches 89, in case you're interested.

Character sheet here: http://pastebin.com/zFxWNup1 It's relatively up to date, and works ok if you're just jumping in and don't want to handle an archive binge, haha.

Anyway.

++

The biggest flaw on highway one, you think, is that the sun rises in the east, over the mountains so close by. While it's not a huge flaw- and many would disagree, with some pointing to the well above average numbers of fatalities on the highway every year- it is one that makes the sunrise somewhat less impressive than you'd hoped.

Initially, you weren't too sure of your choice- the highway isn't as impressive at night as it is in the daytime, and inland is both shorter and just as good, in your opinion. Then again, despite loving the sea, you've also loved the mountains.

Still, Katya seemed well and truly pleased by the route- you think it was the stars over the ocean. Then again, it could have been just the feeling of thundering down the coastal road, the sense of freedom and power the motorcycle conveys- even in the cramped side car.

You're pretty close to home, now, but it's about noon you figure. Been a couple hours, at least, since you last checked your watch

Still, Del Mar just slid into your rearview, and Torrey Hills is rapidly approaching on your right. Pretty soon, you'll have to make the turn off onto Miramar road and onto the air station, but you're not sure you want to do that just yet.

1/2
>>
Neither of you have eaten, save for some beef jerkey you picked up at a gas station around midnight. That's more an oversight on your part, really. You tend to forget you're hungry when you're riding, but it'll catch up to you. Katya is either too polite- or too busy admiring the motorcycle and the scenery- to say anything, but she hasn't eaten either, you're pretty sure.

There's the usual 'interstate food' available- a few road houses, though most of those won't be open just yet. It'searly enough in the day that you could probably sneak down to Santa's before it gets busy, but that runs the risk of bumping into other squadron members, and you're supposed to go there tonight anyway. There's a 'Counrty Cookin' place open- one of hundreds of similar, medium sized restaurants and diners across the states with that name, you're sure- but it's not too bad, you've eaten there before, and they do make some pretty damn good breakfast plates.

Or, you think, You could just go home and make yourselves something there- someone's been to the base commissary already, for sure, and none of the girls tend to shop light when it comes to food.

[x] Country cookin! Bacon and ham and sausage and eggs and gravy and damn, that's all one meal?

You consider heading home for a bit- you can make waffles and bacon with the best of them- but there's nothing quite like the concept of four kinds of meat on a plate that agrees with you more right now.

Pulling off the highway turns out to not be as bad as you feared- traffic aside, it's almost noon, and the worst of rush hour is long over. The place- which would be more at home strung out on some two lane blacktop in the south, you think- looks to be fairly quiet- couple big rig trucks, a few cars, a minivan. Not much else.

You and Katya both stretch after you park the motorcycle, and you resist the urge to yawn. It's not the first all nighter you've pulled, and it surely won't be the last, but it's not like you don't get tired. Some coffee ought to fix that right up, you think, as you head inside.

Katya selects a seat at a booth near the window- there's not much to see besides the highway onramp and a runoff pond across the road, but the bar just didn't have two seats together. Some old folks occupy another booth, and a family of four sits in the other, two young kids and middle-aged parents.

1/2
>>
The waitress, a tired-looking thirty something takes a second or three to walk on over to your booth. “What'll it be y'all?” she asks, a southern drawl marking her as clearly not from around here. Having spent time in the southeast as a kid, you can tell when a drawl like that is a fake, and this one isn't.

Katya orders before you- a plate of pancakes, bacon, a ham steak, two eggs and a glass of orange juice.

You take a second before ordering coffee and 'jimbob's favorite'- which apparently consists solely of hash browns, every kind of meat that can come from a swine ever, and eggs. And grits. And it comes with a bowl of fried apples. Jimbob, you expect, isn't a small individual.

Your suspicion is confirmed when your meal actually comes- for any other faults, this place does not short you out on food. Your revised weight estimate of this Jimbob fellow spirals upwards into the five hundred plus class.

A familiar voice interrupts your meal.

“This seat taken?” Commander Michelle Metcalf asks, sliding into the booth next to you, causing Katya to frown a bit around a mouthful of pancake.

[] “Not at all, Ma'am.”

[x] “Not at all, Ma'am.”

You quickly swallow the mouthful of food you were chewing before she sat down, and shake your head negative. “No, no. Not at all, ma'am.” You assure her.

She nods. “Lieutenant commander Bishop. We'll have some talking to do later, I'm sure, but I'm not here to bother you long.” She says, looking over at Katya, openly appraising her. “I actually came to talk to Miss Litvyak here, and see if she'd like to swing by my office later.”

Katya gets a guarded look on her face, but doesn't say much. “You are in your office on Sunday?” She asks, forking another load of pancake into her mouth. She's gone through her plate pretty quickly, and you note that your fried apples have found their way to her side of the table as well.

Viper, for her part, nods. “A few of my instructors left the school to fly on the lines. One of them won't be coming home.” If it's meant for effect, it doesn't get a visible one from Katya, whom you've no doubt has plenty of experience with that herself. It's hard to remember, sometimes, she was flying combat missions before you graduated basic flight.

1/2
>>
Viper, for her part, doesn't pause. “I was hoping, while your squadron was stationed here, that you'd be willing to fly with the aggressors and help teach our pilots and witches what they need to know out there.” She pushes forward a business card, same as almost anyone else with an office, including you, has for contact information. “We'd really appreciate the help, miss Litvyak.”

You're surprised when she pronounces the last name correctly- most people stateside tend to butcher it.

She stands up after that. “Anyway, I just happened to see you two in here and recognized you. Sorry I can't stay to chat, but I do have work to do. Good luck, Lieutenant commander Bishop, and I hope you'll drop by, miss Litvyak.”

Katya waits till she leaves to say anything. The fact that she puts down her fork speaks more to her taking this a lot more seriously than it needs to be taken, in your opinion.

“Frank, who was that?” She asks. “She is an instructor? She did not act like any instructor I have ever met.”

I'll answer some of these, but there are mostly canon only for the Strike Witches series, not the Strike Witches Quest series

>are there Strike Wizards?

No, only girls and women have magical powers of any discernible or useful quantities. But if you want one look to the left.

>Why do they need to wear cute skirts and uniforms instead of something more substantial?

Striker units (described below) work best when there is minimum interference between the unit and skin. Due to the need to scramble at any time, most witches stopped wearing long skirts.

>Why aren't they actually INSIDE the plane, instead of some weird airplane boots that defy all the laws of physics (but it's magic lol!)

Striker Units are a hybrid of conventional and magical energy. The magical engine in it can also amplify magical abilities so the witches are more powerful with shield generation and other abilities.

>Why are they all cute little girls? Where are the women?

The amount of magical energy needed for combat duty peteers out around the age of 20. After that, witches can still test fly striker units for many years. Other witches can also use magical abilities such as healing and sight until their elder years.
>>
>>24424944
not all are pubescent girls, some are in their late teens are rather womanly in the right places.

>>24424974
While in SWQ, there's a less obvious male magic which basically amounts to excelling at a task far beyond the norms, such as flying or sniping.
>>
>>24424974

So the universe is entirely designed around cute little girls wearing skirts flying around with jet skates, using "because magic" as it's only excuse as to why.

Of course this is anime, so it's sort of expected I suppose.
>>
>>24424944
(Excuse for cute girls doing cute things)
(Exactly)
(I know it's not. But that's what's in universe. I like this one because there are girls in planes instead of only Strikers. Strikers are arguably defensible based on extreme manueverability and small silhouette. Arguably I said.)

He died a traitor to his country and his world, and his family became pariahs.
>>
>>24424944
In original SW there are no male magic users. In SWQ-verse it's less...obvious than female magic users. There's a bunch of handwaving regarding why they don't wear pants (something about skin contact increasing magical circuitry?) but it's mainly to see girls in no pants.

[x] yeah, she runs the fighter weapons school here.

You nod. “She's the commanding officer over at the fighter weapons school. Top Gun.” You say, leaning back in your seat a bit. You'd be surprised if Jimbob weighed less than a ton. “She doesn't have to deal with rookies all the time, so she's a bit more civil than most instructors.

You pause. “Unless you do something stupid.”

Katya giggles. “Did you learn that first hand?”

You're forced to nod with a smile. “Yeah, and then some. Most of us caught hell at some point or other, except Ice, I think.”

Katya laughs, and resumes her attack on the plate of pancakes, occasionally grabbing a forkful of your fried apples- well, her fried apples, now.

The two of you finish breakfast fairly quickly, given the amount of food- it's only been a bout an hour since you pulled off the highway. Your waitress gives you the bill- surprisingly small, given how much food there was- and you leave a fairly generous tip. You never know who it pays to be nice to, you think.

The ride the rest of the way to base takes about twenty minutes, all told, with one stop at the gate. The sailor on duty at the gate eyes your motorcycle- and Katya- with undisguised envy, but waves you through without a word.

Your housing is empty- it is still the weekend, after all- and there's no note anywhere. No telling where everyone is, but there's a boxed package addressed to you, with a return address through Edwards AFB.

[x] PRESENTS!

You eye the box with some suspicion before shrugging and pulling out your pocket knife, scoffing at the 'do not cut' warning on the tape. If they didn't want you to cut it, why does it look like they did their damnedest to hermetically seal it in packing tape?

You almost jump back once it's open, but nothing comes out to get you. Inside, there's a pair of identical patches, with a stylized Wyvern clutching a struggling warrior in red armor with a hammer in it's talons, bearing the legend “dragon rider” and a gigantic three ring binder bearing the title “XF-02B mod.2 WYVERN” on the cover.

“That... is a lot of reading.” You mutter to yourself, hefting the binder. You could probably kill someone with it by dropping it a few feet onto them. Flipping the cover open experimentally reveals that first, there's three page numbering sets- pages a-d, pages I-XV, and pages 1-1500. Further glances reveal the top secret nature of the original document- plenty of blacked out sections also noting that, despite you having to operate the damn thing, you still don't need to know it's intricate details.

Nothing really stands out as major changes to you, though your eye is drawn to the apparent deletion of the underwing hard points and the two small bulges along the sides of the engine nacelles on the underside of the wing.

A hand written note taped to the inside cover reveals that your new ride should be there before the package arrives, and if it isn't, it'll be landing within the day.

[x] Ya know, I'm going to the pool. This is too much to absorb on no sleep.

You carry the binder upstairs, depositing it on Merlin's bunk before you grab a towel and head back downstairs, noting that Katya has made friends with her bed already- she's passed out face down on her pillow.

Unsurprisingly, Slider and the Twins are both at the pool, sharing it with some other pilots and a couple of other witches, who look up at you with some passing interest as you sprawl out on a patio chair next to Slider.

“How was yer trip?” She asks, sounding bored. You note that, as pale as she is, she doesn't seem to burn, either.

“Not bad,” you respond, peeling off your shirt, causing one of the twins- Alyssa, you think- to hoot. You ignore it. “Saw my Aunt and cousins, got my motorcycle, got to play with my dog, hard to complain.”

“Now, by playing with your dog, do you mean that bear you keep telling us is a dog, or-” Slider teases.

“Yes, I mean Rufus. I was a perfect gentleman the entire time, thank you very much.” You say, mock indignantly. “Besides, it's hard to do that kind of thing on a motorcycle at night.”

“Mmm.” she says, disagreeing. “Not really, see you just have to-”

“Not listening!” You say, plugging your ears with your fingers and closing your eyes.

You open one eye experementally to see Alyssa, hands on her hips, looming over you. Her sister is climbing out of the pool to join her.

“Hey Frank! Come join us in the pool!” She demands.

“Yeah! Come play in the water! It'll be fun!” Her sister echos.

“~fuuuunnnnnnnnn!”

“We won't bite! We promise!”

“Fraaaaaank! Get in the pooooool Fraaaaaaank!”

I live in a country where there are no sharks, and I've never seen one, nor have I seen Jaws. Yet if I were to name one animal that scares me, the first to come to mind would be sharks. It seems clear to me that if you get to choose between swimming with sharks (even if they are actually girls) or lounging by the pool, the reasonable choice would be to lounge.

Crack your other eye open and look at the twins, trying to not be blatant about appreciating their swimsuit-clad figures. Girls have some hips on them, you'll give them that.

“Pfft,” you say, closing your eyes again. “I saw Jaws. I ain't getting in there with your other victims.”

“awwwww...” Alyssa says, fake pouting. “You're no fun. We'd have just nibbled!”

“Sampled.” Her sister corrects. “Sampled.”

“Sampled?”

“Bite and leave.”

“Oh, let him bleed out?”

“Kinda, yeah.”

“you two have no sense of how to do things.” Slider remarks. “You make it so they know they can't get away. Then you squeeze the life out of them.”

“Are we still talking about swimming?” Clarissa asks, confused.

“I don't know. Rachel's weird. I... I think I'm going back in the pool. Frank can deal with her. Good luck Frank!” Alyssa responds.

“Nice knowing you!”

“We'll notify your next of kin!”

“You'd hardly believe they're older than me.” Slider says as the two splash back into the pool. “Oh, that kind of reminds me. Tabitha wanted to talk to you whenever she and Samantha get back from the local witch academy.”

[x] “About what?”

“About what?” You ask, propping yourself up on one elbow to look over at Slider.

She shrugs. “Samantha's been asking us- all of us- about a lot of magic theory and application regarding conventional technology, like your jet. She says she thinks she's figured it out, but she hasn't told anyone what it is, just yet. Tabby and Rosalie have been taking turns teaching her the more advanced stuff she's asking about, and they're spending a lot of time down at the academy at the college , using their library. Tabby thinks she's onto something, though.”

You lean back. “I was worried, for a minute, you were going to tell me that she was trying to get Merlin back to the academy.”

Slider shrugs- you catch the move just out of the corner of your eye, and promptly have to threaten your libido with a messy death if it can't get itself under control right the fuck now.

“She wouldn't do that to you two. Besides, do you really think Samantha's gonna ever leave you of her own free will? Kid worships you, Frank. You didn't see what happened last time Ice tried nudging her on the subject. Anyway, yeah. Tabby wanted to talk to you when she got back about Viper and Katya, and, oh, about something involving your jet, too. Hey, what was in that box?”

Did you guys not see the TW89 update where Dr. Light was touting that Witch powered _____ was the wave the future?

I can imagine there's some higher ups that would love that for no other reason than to remove witches from their special roles and into something that'll help men do better.

Thus if this becomes big, it'll mark the end of witches as we know them. And the start of the glorified tank/jet part era.

It won't really END Witches, just move them into Special Ops work. Witches can still do some things a tank or jet can't. They're smaller, faster, more maneuverable. They just don't have the firepower to be effective in straight fights. You don't put Green Berets in a line battle, why would you put Witches in one?
>>
>>24428500
A tank/jet part you have to pay, feed, billet, moralise, and pat on the head when they do a good job.
Frankly I don't see many witches having a problem with this.
>>
>>24428500
And the point is that when the larger focusing array can be put into a miniturized, a mech suit Striker can be built that has just as good shielding, better manueverability, and just as good weapons as a Witch Vehicle.

Really, it was just Tomino cranking up how POINTLESS and stupid the whole One Year War was by killing off the protagonist at the end. The novels were written during that period where he didn't figure he was ever gonna get a chance for a sequel, so he just said "Fuck it." and offed Amuro for impact.

[x] the box was from Konstantina. I... don't wanna talk about it.

You put on your best thousand yard stare. “I-It was from Konstantina. I... don't wanna talk about it.” You say, doing your best to get pale. You've no idea if it's working though.

“Hmph. Heavy lotta crap. What, did she send you an armored wedding tux? Or did she go salvage parts of your fighter from Alaska? Or, hey! Was it a tux made out of parts of your fighter?” She says, then waves it off. “Could have just as easily been a bottle of her blood or something creepy. Ooh, my love, keep this near you that we can always be together in spirit! Or some shit, right?”

You have to admit, her impersonation isn't that off.

“Oh, that was the other thing Tabby wanted. She said to remind you you need to crank out a letter for your Soviet girlfriend or whatever she is, now.” She laughs. “American girls not your thing, Frank?”

“He just hasn't tried the right one!” Alyssa hoots from the pool.

“Yeah, well- oh, Hi Tabby. You guys got back sooner than I expected.” Slider says.

“Library was full, and Samantha said she found what she needed.” Ice says. “How was the trip, Frank?”

That's assuming everyone put up with it happily, which I doubt was the case. I believe one of the Malloneys had it in for witches and sought to find a way to outright replace them. In the SW verse, this resulted in the Warlock.

>>24428842
It also marginizes the Witch and emphasizes the men driving it in terms of credit. I doubt there would be partnerships like Frank and Merlin's formed as opposed to seeing the Witch as a part.

This verse is different than the standard verse, Malloney's still and asshat but there's no Warlock.

There is better interaction between forces and since the Martians could be fought by regular troops there's less reason to hate the witches.

Granted, there's always people who think things should be changed, but I think you're making too big a deal out of things.

The understanding? A stark preference for jets/tanks compared to girls with leg covers. Mouse having a Witch-tank drive up and lay waste to tank and witch alike then comes the "wave of the future"

Incidental? I think not.

I'm not sure where this stark preference you get is coming from, they've shown that both have their places.

Mouse showing how people generally react to meeting new tech? Realistic. And We lost one tan and a witch. That's not "laying waste"
That's us taking casualty's facing a decent fight.
If we were somewhere where we could've hidden the witches better, they would've sniped those tanks to death.

As for the planes? We were in a bleeding edge plane equipped with a witch and we barely managed to match Konstantina. Strikers aren't going anywhere.

Because of our bleeding edge plane and Merlin, but yes we would've gotten her if those others hadn't been incoming and/or we had more support.

Plus I think Ghost has plans for her so she's got a semi-decent chunk of plot armor but that's different.

[x] Great! Nice to get some time out on the road, see the family, play with the dog, that kind of thing

“It was great! I kind forgot how much I missed being able to do that.” You respond, sitting up to look at Ice. “Saw the family, got to see Rufus, that kind of thing.”

“How is Rufus?” Ice asks. “Has he gotten bigger since we saw him last time?”

You laugh. “I doubt it. He's still pretty big though. Slider still thinks he's a bear.”

“I'm telling you, he's a skinny bear with a tail and long legs.” Slider insists. “There is no dog on earth that big.”

“I'm still pretty sure he's a dog, Rachel.” Ice says. “Anyway, Frank, Commander Metcalf was looking for you and Katya, has she talked to you yet?”

“Yeah, she found us out at that country cookin place.” You respond. “Wants Katya to go fly as an aggressor for a while.”

“Well, it makes sense. They don't want Katya flying with you over China lake or the Edwards range.” Ice says, holding up a hand to forestall your protest. “ONI won't clear her for it, combat record or no, she's still soviet-born. But she could do a lot of good in the aggressor program.”

“Wait, so one of us has to babysit Frank and Samantha on their test flights?” Slider asks. “Aw man. I was looking forward to a lot of time doing nothing!”

Ice regards her friend with a cool gaze. “I'll take your flights, if it means that much to you. But then you won't get to try out the Wyvern strikers, and...”

1/2
>>
Slider actually lifts up her sunglasses. “We're getting new strikers?”

Ice nods, a tight little smile on her face. “Brand new. Bleeding edge stuff. But if you don't want to fly them.....”

“Well, now hang on Tabby.” Slider protests. “I didn't mean it like that.”

“I bet. You're not scheduled for a test flight anytime soon anyway, but you can run chase for Frank and I on our first flights.”

Slider sighs. “Chase is boring!”

“Yeah,” you grump. “Till something has a catastrophic failure.”

Ice flicks you on the top of your head. “You've got Samantha in the back seat. What are you worried about?”

“Frank really does most of the work.” Merlin says, laying out a towel and sitting down next to you. “I just try to keep everything running and work the computers.”

[] Ice has a point, Merlin.
[] So, Merlin. Slider says you've figured it out? What's it?

That's cute, thinking we're gonna say anything besides KEEP GOING. Long as you're good to go, we're good to go.

[x] So, Merlin. Slider says you've figured it out? What's it?

I want more PLOT if you know what I mean.I mean story of course, and Lewd things happening in the pool with the whole squadron, except for Merlin.

Funny how ONI allows her to be at a social event with the president but not test flights with Frank considering if she wanted inside info, she'd have gotten plenty by now flying with him in combat.

also what the fuck is ONI's train of thought here. I mean
>clear defector to be at same social event as POTUS, but totally can't work on test flight with wingman even though she has experience with what the airframe can do.
>>

Are you really surprised that "Office of Naval Intelligence" is an oxymoron?

Don't stop now man, open a new thread if you have to.

There are things Fronk doesn't know about and presidents are more replaceable than military secrets.
>>
>>24430013
>>24430037
I think it's that they don't want her to possibly see some of the OTHER shit they have at China Lake and Edwards.
>>
>>24430041
>>24430037
The President can be replaced. A technological edge can't.

It's a very cold and ruthless train of thought, but there you go.

If they wanted to kill POTUS, they wouldn't use Katya to do it because it would encourage a retaliatory decapitation strike. Gotta make it look like an accident or an inside job.

Plus there are things at China Lake way more valuable to national security than any guy in a suit.

Also, ONI doesn't decide who does and doesn't get into the White House Christmas Party (which a LOT of people attend), the Secret Service (specifically the Presidential Detail) do.
>>
>>24430143
True, they may not, but assuming the Secret Service don't get info and don't have ONI do checks on the attendees to make sure they haven't defected would be silly.

I never said that. Just that ONI didn't get the final say. They DO get the final say on this though.

ALSO:

We need to call ahead to Santa to order that Cake we promise Merlin.

Y'know, the one as big as she is. Or bigger.

That takes time, and we want it ready.
>>
>>24430177
They know she was a defector, they let her in anyway because they figured they had good security and she was probably genuine.

Presidents meet with foreign diplomats and defectors and random joe schmoe every day chumps all the time and the Secret Service is bretty gud at what they do and probably has witches of its own on standby at these functions.
>>
>>24430221
Oh yeah! You're right, we should do that as soon as this conversation ends.
