Welcome to the third episode of A Game of Thrones – The Quest of House Harrock.
Previously: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/24340519/
All Previous Threads: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Harrock

In this quest, the year is 284AL and it is six months after Robert Baratheon was crowned king. You are Ser Artys Harrock, thirty-eight years old and the head of House Harrock, sworn to House Arryn of the Mountain and Vale. You are a dedicated, devoted and cunning man, eager to see the rebirth and stability of your house from its ruined state. With a head for numbers, a good sword-hand and an exotic Valyrian yataghan named 'Ambition,' you shall lead your family to new wealth and new stability.

During the last episode, you visited Crown Crag, the home of House Egen. There you met the ostentatious Loras Egen and his family and bought free access to his port, in exchange for tax-free travel through your lands and your assistance in expanding the small harbour. After a brief hunting trip you returned to High Harrock (despite the mountain men's attempt to hinder you) and went about your business. Today we start at the week's end, after the arrival of Ser Lyn Corbray and his squire – hopefully he might be able to assist in beating some sense into your son. Once you are certain the boy is in capable hands, there are many other things to attend to.

Is anyone interested in continuing?

I sure am

You never know. All right, this seems like a good number of followers to start with.

Important Characters:
>Ser Artys Harrock
You. A thin, unremarkable man with pallid skin worn and weathered by the winds of the Vale, framed with coarse brown hair cut close to the head and muddy eyes of the same colour. A shrewd but patient fellow, you're the one with the duty to lead House Harrock to prosperity and stability.
>Ulfir Stone
Your elder brother and a bastard. During the War of the Usurper in which your father died, he stole the majority of House Harrock's military and resources, squandering them in an attempt to cripple Jon Arryn's army and curry favour with the Mad King. He's still out there somewhere.
>Alric Harrock
Your uncle. A tall and gangly old man with tight skin and carefully groomed hair as white as snow. You have his eyes. He's a sly old fox and was as much of a father to you as your real dad. He functions as your castellan.
>Maester Llelewyn
Your maester. He's a gaunt and ugly fellow with a mope of black hair, hailing from the Riverlands. He's not a pleasant man and he seems to prefer the company of ravens to humanity, something you're just fine with.
>Ser Morys
Your Master-of-Arms. He's squat and lean with a mane of loose grey hair and skin that seems ready to fall off his body it's so wrinkled and loose. Venerable and wise, there's no better tactician in your house. When you were a boy you were his squire, now your son follows your footsteps.

>Ser Tenry
A sworn sword in your service. A wiry, athletic ranger who was knighted by Ser Morys after his exceptional service as an impromptu commander. Possibly the best marksman in your house.
>Ser Boros
A sworn sword in your service. A dark-skinned, curly-haired lad barely older than your son. You have your doubts that he is truly a knight but you do not know anyone who is better with a spear.
>Lady Deyya Harrock
Your wife. Formerly of House Manderly, you share a loveless marriage with this woman. Her fair hair is greying but her eyes haven't lost their brightness. Her pink, soft body is ample in all of the right and wrong places. See image.
>Brock Harrock
Your son. He's fifteen years old, a few inches taller than you and almost twice as broad. A brute made of fat and muscle with fists like hams, although he has your eyes and hair. How can you ever hope to make a lord out of this boy?
>Katrin Harrock
Your daughter. A beautiful and charming girl with the pale skin and lean physique of House Harrock and the fair hair and bright eyes of House Manderly. Exceptionally well-behaved and a perfect child.
>>
>>24402084
Let's do this.

>>24402186
>Lord Loras Egen
Your flamboyant neighbour. A short and scrawny fellow with lank brown hair that falls over his shoulders and a square beard, with beady hazel eyes staring out of his face. He seems quite fixated with Braavosi culture, fashion and women, if his choice in wife is anything to go by.
>Lady Lorenna Egen
The daughter of Loras Egen and his foreign wife, Melicia. A tall girl with smooth swarthy skin and wild hair, black and oily. With her stubborn green eyes and her perpetual scowl, you know very little of the girl other than her love for animals – you don't even know if she can speak the common tongue.
>Ser Lyn Corbray
A knight sent by Yohn Royce to assist you with the hillfolk problem and to help you discipline your son. A handsome man, both stern and aloof with perhaps a little arrogance on the side, clad in shining armour and armed with a Valyrian blade. Hopefully he'll be able to beat some sense into your boy.

Breakfast quickly comes to an end in the grim feast hall where your family and closest associates were enjoying a meal with Ser Lyn Corbray, shortly after his arrival. Beside you your son is seething, already filled with great dislike for his new tutor. Judging from the sneer on the knight's face when he made an evaluation of the boy, the disdain is mutual. But perhaps a harsh hand is needed in order to temper the lad. Turning to you once the meal is over, the handsome Ser Lyn offers a courteous bow.

“I thank you for your hospitality, Lord Harrock. I shall begin my work immediately, although I am curious whether you have any preferences when it comes to your son's training. Are there any particular skills you wish for me to concentrate on? If there is nothing in particular, I shall focus on getting the boy fitter and teaching him how to use a sword.”

Your choices:
>Agility – slim the boy down a bit, he can hardly fight properly being as fat as he is.
>Animal Handling – about time he learned how to train and ride a horse properly.
>Warfare – teach the lad the art of warfare, so he will be able to command if necessary.

Additionally, weapon choices:
>Long Blades – a blade is a knight's weapon and your boy will need to learn how to use the family sword.
>Bludgeons – the boy said he wanted to learn how to use a flail, might as well start him on that path.
>Others – axes, spears, polearms, short blades, there's many other things you focus on teaching Brock.
>>
>>24402200
>Ser Lyn Corbray
>Hopefully he'll be able to beat some sense into your boy.
With his dick I take?
>>
>>24402235
Now now, don't spoil the innocent ones.
>>
>>24402231
>Warfare – teach the lad the art of warfare, so he will be able to command if necessary.

>Bludgeons – the boy said he wanted to learn how to use a flail, might as well start him on that path.

Play to his strengths.
>>
>>24402231
Teach him about warfare. Brock needs to learn that battle is not about him alone. He is there to lead and command as he will one day rule our house. Rushing in blindly will kill everyone sworn to our house.
>>
>>24402235
At first I was very confused. Then I remembered that he's gay.
>>24402231
Animal Handling, I think. The Egen girls loves animals, after all, and Brock has proved himself *capable* with a sword. Bludgeons for the weapon choice.
>>
>>24402290
We can teach him how to ride. It will be our way to bond with our son if ser dickass takes over the actual weapons training.
>>
>>24402290
I agree with this, Animal Handling and Bludgeons.
>>
>>24402324
Hm. I suppose that'll work. Perhaps Agility instead? He (hopefully) won't need to lead anybody into battle for a good while, and there's no harm in slimming down.
>>
>>24402392
Would make him more attractive to the girl too, which might help.

>Warfare
>Bludgeons
>You decide to teach the boy how to ride personally - no need for Ser Lyn to get involved in that.

The knight arches his brow in that and you note some disapproval in his tone and his expression.

"Very well, Lord Harrock. I shall focus on teaching the boy how to command and how to handle a mace - once he is able to use that weapon, I shall move on to more advanced ones. However, I would prefer it if you didn't interfere with my education of Brock - I do my work best without interruption or outside influence. Let us go outside, Brock. It's about time I saw your talent when it comes to fighting myself. Your father can watch, if he wishes."

In addition to this, your uncle murmurs into your ear from the side.
"It's your choice whether you want to watch or not, Artys. But there are some things I want to discuss with you, after the trade agreements that you made with Lord Egen."

>Go and watch your son practice with Ser Lyn, save the business for later?
>Let Ser Lyn and your boy do their thing, you should probably handle this business now.
>Or something else you want to do with your time?
>>
>>24402446
>>24402392
His fat is his strength though, arguably. Though slimming down at least a little might be a good idea, yes. Think of his horse.
>>
>>24402503
Be sure to give Brock some useful pointers about kicking the knight's ass in sparring before heading off with uncle.
>>
>>24402622
Any other input, or shall I go with this?
>>
>>24402515
We'll be bankrupted AGAIN to find some big enough to carry him. A knight needs more than one horse, after all.
>>24402622
Seconded.
>>
>>24402622

You give Brock some fatherly advice and try to sooth his nerves a bit - anything so that he doesn't lose his temper on Ser Lyn. The last thing you want is your son ruining your family's connections by throwing a punch at the Corbray knight when it's unwarranted. After a few minutes of chatter, the large lad seems to have finally calmed down.
"All right. I'd rather have you as a teacher. I'd rather have Ser Morys tutoring me. But I'll play along for now."
Amused by the whole affair, Ser Lyn expediently leads away the boy to the grounds outside where they can practice, allowing the rest of your family and your associates to disperse - leaving just you and your uncle in the middle of the vast, lonely feast hall. The oppressive air seems to muffle Alric's words as he opens his mouth to speak.

"I don't trust the man. Be careful what you say about that knight, Artys. I'm sure that he'll bring us misfortune at some point. In any case, access to House Egen's port has opened up several opportunities for our own house - most prominently, the chance to sever some of our ties to House Belmore. We no longer need to rely on their harbours so perhaps it's time that we impose greater taxes on their usage of Westpass."
>>
>>24402885
Rake in that Braavosi gold, son. Daddy needs a new warhorse. How much will increasing the taxes earn us?
>>
>>24402885
I like this idea gives us and are ally more power while weakening are rival
>>
>>24402885
Well, they do need the pass for trade, they have pretty much no other options, so I say yes, increase the tax, and explain it as a tax in response to increased clan raids, so we need to fund more soldiers to patrol the roads.
>>
>>24402885
Sounds good. But do it gently and slowly. No sense on stepping on toes too quickly.
>>
>>24402982
I like this. Frame it diplomatically. It's all bullshit, obviously, but we need to keep up appearances.
>>
>>24402982
>>24402997
This.
>>

A servant quickly arrives with the appropriate documents from Alric's quarters and he begins to add it all together. The maths is as follows:

Currently, you have a +5 modifier on House Fortune rolls and a -1 modifier whenever you choose to increase your Wealth as a result of House Fortune rolls.

If you choose to increase the taxes, you can increase the Wealth modifier to one of the following, with the higher options being more likely to harm relations:
>+1 to Wealth results
>+2 to Wealth results
>+3 to Wealth results
However, as House Egen has a smaller port than House Belmore, cutting ties with their ports would reduce your House Fortune modifier to +4. This is almost inevitable. In addition to this, unless handled diplomatically you're likely to drastically harm your relations with House Belmore, who are potentially the most influential and powerful noble house in this region of the Vale.
>>
>>24403138
Only do the +1 for now. We can raise it up higher once we're stronger.
>>
>>24403138

>+1 to Wealth results

Start slow. Play it safe.
>>
>>24403112
Much appreciated. Feel free to participate at any point - the more the merrier.

In addition, I welcome any discussion. So in the downtime between my posts, do not be afraid to discuss your options.
>>
>>24403138
The +2 to wealth, we need to actually improve from doing this. Doing +1 makes no difference at all, except for pissing off Belmore. We might as well go balls out and piss them off and make some dosh while doing it.

We will frame this exactly as it is. We will use these funds for more soldiers. We could hand house Belmore a report about our recent discovery of the hill tribes mucking about in our lands. We have to be careful not to appear too weak while doing this, though.
>>
>>24403223

Changing vote. It will be interesting, at least. Time for some risk.
>>
>>24403238
>>24403223
>>24403169
>>24403167
Going with an increase to +2 Wealth, then. Making a note of the changes and altering the paperwork, Alric hands you some parchment and a quill.

"This will likely need a personal touch, Artys. Having anyone other than you write this letter would only add insult to injury. Word it carefully; we'll have Maester Llelewyn send it off as soon as it is written."

You can't remember the last time that writing a letter was so stressful. Then again, the Belmores are very influential. Picking up the quill, you take in a breath and begin to write.

Give me a roll of 4d6. First roll will be accepted.
>>
>>24403238
Could be our undoing, but that's why we need to make it damn clear we need the gold to keep the paths clear, and for nothing else. We should provide as much proof of why we need the gold and what we're spending it on as we can without undermining our position. And the pass is important to Belmore too, try to convince them why the pass needs to stay clear, and that costs money.
>>
>>24403223

Yeah, I like this if they complain we can make a compromise to lower it to +1 in exchange of some support with the hill tribes and also earning some good will.

Because a best out of three is fundamentally unbalanced and leans towards the protagonist rarely ever failing. It's a dangerous game and one bad roll of the dice is the difference between life and death. And an average out of three tends towards averages - I prefer a bit more chance in my games.

You hand over the parchment to your uncle once he's finished. Tutting slightly as he reads down across it, he grabs a new set of parchment and begins to rewrite it, making some changes and running you through them, so you don't make the mistakes again. After reading over the second draft, the old man grunts and nods to himself.
"I suppose it'll have to suffice. Hopefully together we've written something that will appease them and not wreck our family's reputation too badly. The last thing we want to do is get into a trade war with the Belmores - that's the mistake your grandfather made and that's what lost us Grimarbour. I'll have our Maester send the raven."

After placing your seal upon the letter and having a servant collect the various documents arranged over the table, Alric Harrock shuffles away to have the Maester send the letter and continue his duties in privacy. You are left on your own.

What sort of things do you wish to do with the rest of your day?
>>
>>24403473
'Dear Lord ... whatever your name is, I've forgotten. We are increasing our tax on your trade through our lands because of increased bandit raids, and not because we need the money and you have plenty. We are also sending most of our trade through House Egen now, as their lord has a hot foreign daughter we want our son to bang and wed, and we want to make you poorer. Cheers for the cash, Lord Harrock.'

You have a servant bring forth one of the gifts given to you by Lord Egan, that you brought back from Crown Crag. A cask of crag cider, sharp, acidic and packing a punch. Murmuring a quiet curse under your breath, you pour yourself a goblet and drink deeply of the crisp, fruity alcohol. Hopefully you haven't ruined your house too badly.

Taking the time to check up on your son, you watch from the edge of the courtyard as he is beaten back by Ser Lyn, time and time again. Brock armed with a cudgel, the Corbray knight armed with a training sword and both of them wearing padded armour, your son is brutally outmanoeuvred and defeated repeatedly, while Ser Lyn barks out orders and even the occasional taunt, pushing and egging your son on. At least the lad doesn't seem to be giving up or losing his temper - yet.
>>24403696
>>24403649
You go to check on Ser Morys and the archers just outside the castle walls, where they are practising as a single cohesive unit - firing a volley of arrows over two hundred yards at a distant target. Once they've exhausted their arrows, they run to the target to retrieve their projectiles before running back. It gets them fitter and gets them to work together, at the very least.
Do you have any suggestions for the training regime for the archers, before we move on to the rangers?

I really need to make a different one. I'll try to get around to that soon

>>24403872
I really think our archers need to be trained with some kind of pole weapon. We don't seem to have a significant number of men-at-arms to defend them in a pitched battle, and they'll run out of arrows eventually, so they should have some melee training. How much would it cost to outfit them all with weapons like pic related?
>>
>>24403964

Then give then the best advise you ever got at archery. Went ordering someone to wait before shooting yell "Hold fast" because if you yell "Don't shoot" someone will miss hear it and think you yell "Shoot". That all I got. Bonus points of anyone knows the reference.
>>
>>24403949
There's a bit of murmuring and discontent at that announcement, as many of the bowmen are already exhausted - but Ser Morys promises to keep the men at it. He's quite the adept commander.
>>24404012
>>24404001
>>24404006
>>24403964
Ser Morys complies and they begin to bring out the necessary equipment, preparing the arrowheads and firing the flaming arrows across the sky, as the sun rises to its peak and begins to descend. The afternoon is coming quickly. Of course, using burning arrows renders them difficult to use again - but then again, firing them several times does that anyway, especially with inexperienced archers.
>>24404033
In theory, they should - but Ser Morys is starting with baby steps. Teach them to fire as a group. Once they know how to coordinate with each other, then he'll move to practising with ranks.

Which of the rangers do you wish to visit, the wetlanders currently out on patrol or the mountain rangers, currently resting and preparing themselves for the long night ahead, harassing the mountain men?

You leave to pay a visit to the military wing of your castle, a tower dedicated to housing your rangers and your archers. It's half-empty at the moment but you can see some of the rangers scattered here and there throughout the building - some are still resting after an exhausting night out in the mountains while others are awake, fletching their arrows and sharpening their blades and cleaning their equipment, anything to prepare for the night ahead. You get salutes and bows and even a few cheers as you pass through the quarters - you never really involved yourself in the military side of your house until recently, that was always Ulrif's domain. No wonder so many of them were willing to follow him to their deaths.

Ser Tenry is found in the officers' quarters at the highest room, with some of his men gathered about him. They appear to be sharpening wooden stakes, preparing some equipment for the night ahead. Glancing up, the ranger-slash-knight spots you and shoots up to his feet with a salute.
"M'lord. Just preparing a few stakes - planning on digging up some pit traps for the savages while they're sleeping. Should be a nasty surprise for 'em in the morning - how can we help?"
>>
>>24404328

Inquire as to the state of the pass. If we screwed up that letter, it'd be nice to at least have a little testimony to the need.
>>
>>24404496
We asked when we discovered the schedule was fixed and the fucking barbarii discovered that. We told them to change every week so they don't really know when to expect a patrol.
>>
>>24404328
How aggressive have the clans been since the rangers have been constantly harrassing them?
>>
Ask them about how the raids seem to be doing and for an estimate on the clansmen's current population.
>>
>>24404414
"It's handled - every three days, we change the patrol times. We make sure it's differen' every time, make sure there's lots of variation, nothing that the savages can guess at. It's not like Boros' boys have to deal with much anyway, now that we're on the offensive. I don't think the hillfolk are used to being the ones that are raided."
>>24404463
"We could always use some better weapons, m'lord - but that costs gold an' I'm sue that it would be better spent elsewhere."
You can upgrade the melee weapons, ranged weapons and armour of your troops at the cost of Wealth at the end of the month. Each of those categories costs 1 Wealth each, per unit.
>>24404496
"Looks like the winter's snows from three years back are finally gone. We're in for a long summer by the looks of it, an' Westpass is gonna be seeing a lot of travel."
>>24404539
"Not at all. We're makin' 'em paranoid, m'lord. The savages are too scared to leave their holes and when they do, they usually end up steppin' in one of these."
With a malicious grin, Tenry waves about the stake that he's sharpening.
"Still, can't be too careful. That's why Boros' boys should keep their patrol up."
>>24404554
"Raids are goin' well so far. The savages are trying to catch us off guard so far, well, they ain't done such a good job at that. We've only lost three men to 'em, they've lost dozens. As for their numbers? I'd say 'round eight hundred holed up in their little grove, half of them proper fighters, half of them no good at all. We're whittlin' 'em down, slowly but surely."
>>
Oh, and for those familiar with the system we're using, these are the stats of the people in our house. I've conveniently hidden all of their flaws, as I'd rather have you folks discover 'em over time.

http://pastebin.com/QSB5UsAe
>>
>>24404612
>Each of those categories costs 1 Wealth

Well, we were sent money for this. I suggest we upgrade the armor of the rangers and maybe their range weapons.
>>
>>24404612
Ask about local trappers/hunters they would make excellent recruits. Especially the ones who stay out there in wild during long periods of time. About time we shove some troops up in their favorite holes who have the skills to stick around for a while or at least prepare to.

Then ask about local smuggler/thieves we want these guys to keep their ear to the ground. For 2 reasons A the mountain men and B our bastard elder brother. Their gonna be the first to know if anything is up.
>>
>>24404675
We'll be handling resource expenditure at the end of the month, once we have more resouces available to us.
>>
>>24404677
Seconding this.
>>
Sorry, was having something to eat.
>>24403783
That'd be me, yes.

>>24404612
Perhaps the Rangers could train with the archers in the use of flaming arrows... setting half of the clan's homes alight might get them packing off our land, and kill a good number in their sleep.
>>
>>24404612
Commend him on the good work, what do people think about upgrading their armour? Don't we have an iron mine which will ease the cost or something?
Is that all the clansmen left in our land?
>>24404677
Also this
>>
>>24404677

Amnesty for any poachers that join the Rangers is another option.
>>
>>24404721
That's a really good idea.
>>
>>24404721
Sounds good.
>>
>>24404677
>>24404721
"I'll talk to Boros later - me an' my boys are a bit busy with the savages. Hopefully he'll be able to pick up some of them trappers. Shouldn't be too difficult to convince them to hunt for hillfolk as well as their normal prey - means less competition for 'em. We'll get back to you about our progress with this a later day, m'lord."
>>24404712
"Thanks, m'lord. We do what we can for our people."
The Iron Mine grants +1 Power and Defence whenever you choose to increase either with your House Fortune roll.
>>24404711
"I'd rather not do that, m'lord. The archers are green, they'd do nothing but alert the savages to us. We barely have time to burn down a handful of huts before they come to cut us down. You want to smoke that out, that'll take a full invasion of their little grove."
>>24404712
"There will always be mountain men, m'lord. Small groups everywhere. But if we get rid of this 'Milk Snake' clan in our mountains, that'll make everyones' lives a little easier."

"Anything else, m'lord?"
>>
>>24404721
Exactly forgot about that. My whole idea is build up an elite guerrilla force who are capable of long ass field campaigns with little to no support. Considering our guys are rangers they would know naturally know a lot of outdoors types and they know those among their number who are a bit shady. Those guys I want for that force particularly the little known ones or the guys who never got caught. Then we find out they guys they know. These recruits will be the best we can aim for.
>>
>>24404800

"Nothing else, just keep me inform of the situation and don't hesitate to come to me if need to talk to me." BTW how many fighters the hill tribe had in the grove? We should begin planing an mayor assault to drive them out in one go.
>>
I've got nothing more to say to Ser Tenry.

What is our long-term plan for dealing with the Milk Snakes? Just keep raiding them until they leave?
Or should we wait until our archers are better trained and then ask Lord Egen for some support?
>>
>>24404923
We're not over-committing right now, although having word of the guy that will lend us troops to kill these faggots we should prepare a full-on assault to this effers.
>>
>>24404895
"'bout five hundred real fighters - but don't be surprised if their sick and their young and their women decide to join in the fight. If y'like, we can lay off our ambushes for the night and focus on scoutin' 'em out. Get a better idea of the lay of the land, what sort o' fighters they got."
>>
>>24404950

Sounds good, get as much information as you can for now.
>>
>>24404950
This sounds good. And if they get a little comfortable, maybe our next raid will be more successful.
>>
>>24404950
Yes, scout, we're gonna try to plan an assault by the end of the month with fully equipped troops and the lordy-lord of lordiness Egen da man. THIS QUEST NEEDS ACTION, MICHAEL BAY TIME!

You leave Ser Tenry and his troops to prepare for the night ahead.

What do you wish to do for the rest of the day, now that it's getting into the afternoon? These are your automated activities, if you feel like time-skipping:
>You want to go riding with Brock later, teach him how to handle a horse.
>You want to personally address the issues of the smallfolk and resolve their issues and petty squabbles as necessary, to forge a better connection with your people.
>You want to spend the evening with your family and improve your relationship with your children and your wife.

Anything else?

>You want to spend the evening with your family and improve your relationship with your children and your wife.

Even if it is automated, I think we like to see it.

>>
>>24405142
Seconded.
>>
>>24405142
Also seeing us ride with Brock, since I want to see how he rants about his training.
>>
>>24405102
Do we have time to train with our guard? Never hurts to train with your battle brothers if you have the time.
>>
>>24405142
After a long ride with Brock - where he manages to gather to the courage to break his rouncey into a controlled canter, even if it's just for a few brief moments - you clean yourself up and prepare for a pleasant meal with your family. Helping yourselves to a roasted pheasant you had imported from the Frey lands to the West along with assorted root vegetables all well roasted, you discuss the day. Katrin spent most of the days being lectured about houses and heraldry and although you can tell she didn't enjoy it, she's quite happy to show off and recite each of the great houses - and even half of the noble houses of the Vale. As for your boy Brock, he seems to nursing his share of bruises even though he holds himself with a quiet pride.
"I didn't punch him once. I kept my head, I fought like a knight should... Even if Ser Lyn doesn't deserve that honour."
There's more than a little disdain in his voice when it comes to the Corbray knight. Perhaps eventually they'll learn mutual respect for one another, but you're doubt that they will ever learn to get along.

The next day arrives and with it, a brief missive containing the details of the Milk Snake forces. Ser Tenry can't write, so he must've had a servant to do it for him.
>Three hundred civilians. Potential combatants, likely inexperienced.
>Three hundred raiders, armed and armoured for quick assaults, not prolonged fights. Some of them seem quite green but most carry themselves well. They probably do most of the hunting.
>A large group of big brutes. Some have castle-forged axes and hammers. Heavy hitters, seem to be well-trained. They guard the chief, old one-eyed bastard with muscles like a bear. Maybe a hundred of them.
>A bunch of slingers. A hundred or so, not very well-armed or very well-trained. The few times we've been spotted by them, they seem to have missed.

Anything you wish to do this day, or another time skip until the next event?
>>
>>24405429

I'm good to skip.
>>
>>24405320
You've got a garrison in each of your towers - Skycliff for the mountains, Wetrock for the river and its wetlands. You've got no personal guard - other than the garrisons, the rangers and the archers, you've got nothing.
>>
>>24405429
I'm fine skipping.
>>
>>24405472
Maybe just train with the garrison then, we really need to look into getting some proper infantry or a personal guard.
>>
>>24405429
If we manage to talk a bit with Brock we should talk to him a bit about fighting, and what needs to be done.

" Don't fight only with your fists because you like it. Don't fight only with gallant weapons because you are supposed to. When you will be in a fight use whatever will work for the best result with as little trouble for yourself. Whatever works. Now in training you have to fight like a knight to learn how to use the tools. It is a bloodless battle. So that when you do enter battle it will be a bloody routine. And when you are a knight or a lord you could have something like a competition for unarmed fighting. It wont be the same as a battle but you most likely will enjoy it and so will other participants and onlookers, by the display of skill and might."

Also we should make a contingency plan. Either a second son, or finding a way to have Katrin be 'heir' of our land and titles, should Brock croak. Just keeping in with realities of ASoIaF
>>
>>24405444
>>24405479
A few days pass before you get a raven from the Belmores. You hold your breath, expecting bad news... But either your choice of words wasn't as bad as you thought or the changes that your uncle Alric made to the letter saved your house from another spat wit the Belmores.

>To Lord Artys Harrock of Westpass,
>I am sorry to hear of the predicament that you are in. Unfortunately, I am unable to lend any resources to assist you and as your taxes make trading with the Riverlands quite prohibitive, I am afraid that I must suspend any further use of our docks until you are able to lower your taxes once more or pay the appropriate price.
>In addition to this, I offer House Harrock the opportunity to swear fealty to House Belmore and become a banner house of my family. If you accept this offer, I will be happy to assist you in crushing the mountain men and all future endeavours. It is time that we put our differences behind us and that you accepted this union.
>Faith and Glory,
>Lord Benedar Belmore the Second.

Any reply for him before we move on?
>>
>>24405707
Not a reply, but fuck that. Our banner belongs to the Arryns of the Eyrie, not some upjumped shipwright.
>>
>>24405707

Gracious refusal. No need to further antagonize him.
>>
>>24405707
Banner house? Benedar can lick my scrotum. Send back an equally apologetic letter saying that we hope that the barbarians will be eradicated as soon as possible that we may resume good relations.
>>
>>24405547
Very well - you pay a brief visit to each garrison, training with them and drilling them to ensure that they don't lose their skills. The last thing you want is for them to become rusty and to forget the rigours of combat.

>>
>>24405739
>>24405757
This. Fuck the jumped up trader baron. Hell, just the suggestion is insulting to us, and to House Arryn. Perhaps we should inform them that Belmore is trying to get their banner men to swear fealty to him, I'm sure they'd disapprove.

Seems like we'll have to speed up our relations with House Eben.
>>
>>24405823
I wonder what Ser Lyn would think about that.
>>
>>24405823
Ooh, that could be funny.
>>24405841
Good idea! Perhaps we should sound out Ser Lyn on how he thinks the Arryns would react?
>>
>>24405791
After writing a letter that you feel is reasonably sympathetic and apologetic, refusing their offer with as much respect and dignity as you can afford, you go back to your duties and let time pass.

By the end of the second week, Ser Boros has arrived with news of the attempt to recruit the huntsmen, poachers and trappers of the land. He has located many men who would be happy to dedicate themselves to your cause if necessary, but doing so would likely harm the productivity of your house's territories. You can choose to accept their offer, or keep them in reserve for the time being.

If you choose to welcome the hunters into the fold, you will gain 4 Power to spend on your military at the end of month but you will lose 2 Population.
>>24405841
When asked, Ser Lyn Corbray simply interrupts.
"I'd rather not involve myself in the politics of House Arryn's vassals. I'm here to train your son and to assist in the eradication of the hillsfolk as necessary. Now if you do not mind, I must tend to my squire's education."
>>
>>24405914
Perhaps keep the hunters and poachers as a reserve militia type unit? Only to be called out in emergencies?
>>
>>24405963
We get 4 power at the end of the month that we can spend on buying squads.
>>
>>24405963
What >>24405985 said. It's a mechanical choice.

Still, you have a point. You can choose to spend the Power on a peasant levy if you wish, in which case I will refund the Population points. This will represent them being a reserve militia unit.

So, any other input?
>>
>>24405914

We should begin planing the attack on the hill tribes, have Ser Tenry perpare an inform about the terrain and the movements of the hill tribe an them call a war council with Ser Lyn and the rest of our house hold.
>>
>>24406019
Let's wait for the end of the month so we actually equip our squads with better shit. We got some wealth and power to spend.
>>
I say we save up our power to buy an Elite Personal Guard unit.
>>
>>24406056
Let's talk about that when we actually reach the end of the month and see what possibilities we have.
>>
>>24406056
>>24406039
>>24405985
I'll take this as votes for increasing your power.

Before I go on another time skip, do you guys want to inform the Eyrie about Benedar Belmore's attempt to make a banner house out of you? A warning, this will require another roll.
>>
>>24406106
I think we should inform, but ask to keep it discreet since we don't know how many of them are supporting that faggot.
>>
>>24406106
Uhh, sure. Why not.
>>
>>24406106
Yeah, sure.
>>
Do units level up automatically over time through training, or do we have to spend power to upgrade our green units to trained?
Also could we take half the trappers, effectively swapping 1 pop for 2 power
>>
>>24406181
They upgrade through training and combat experience. Power cannot be spent to increase a group's experience. In addition, I ruling that a lack of activity can lead a unit become worse.

We should warn them, yes.

You send off the letter, confident that it should get into the hands of the right people and give you the desired result - more influence in your hands, less in that out House Belmore.

As time slips forward, another week passes before another event occurs. As the end of the month crawls close, you're called out of your room at the break of dawn to meet with Ser Tenry in the Maester's chambers. The ranger-knight is battered and bloody, with a bleeding fracture in his skull and a bottle of wine is his hand that he is drinking heavily from, cussing like a Braavosi.
"We were caught off-guard, m'lord. Fucking savages... They got some guerrillas of their own that we gotta worry about. Killed twenty of my men, maybe more before we got out of there, alerted their entire grove. Sick bastards are probably eating their corpses... I made a mistake. Another mistake, a bad fucking mistake..."
With more cussing and swearing, your knight drinks deeply from the bottle in his hand, cradling it like a babe, twitching and swatting at Llelewyn as the Maester cleans out the wound.
>>
>>24406376
Try and gently pry away the bottle from him. We can't have our lead ranger drunk at a time like this. Ask for a more detailed report.
>>
>>24406376

The moment you try to pry away the bottle, his hand instinctively clamps down on it and he takes another deep pull from it, murmuring and swearing to himself as he places it to the side clumsily. The bottle wobbles precariously before settling back down again, thankfully not falling and crashing. If it did, the sorry fool would likely drink the wine from the floor to wet his thirst.
>>24406450
A lad with an ugly nose, likely fixed back into place after it was broken is brought forward. Alongside him is a great brute of a man who you'd hardly expect to be stealthy but seems somber and soft-spoken, along with a runt of a man with a scruffy, braided beard - you think he might actually be of clansman blood. Maybe a product of rape. In any case, the ugly-nosed one speaks first.
"Name's Aparys, m'lord. One of Ser Tenry's best shots, if I say so m'self. It was just another night like any other, the savages in their huts. We were planning on picking off some of the guards, murdering a few of 'em in their beds before we left. We managed to take out the watchmen, see, but the moment we stepped out into the open we got hit by arrows. Didn't see who shot 'em. They didn't shoot to kill, just to cause pain. Make us scream an' one of us did just that. We couldn't help the wounded, we just ran. Those who couldn't run got cut down. Never saw the bastards who shot us, m'lord."
>>
>>24406590
Number of soldiers MIA/KIA?
>>
>>24406590
The plot thickens. I thought the clansmen only had slingers, but obviously some outside force is either giving then bows, or more likely sending bowmen to aid the clansmen. I suspect that House Belmore is flexing their financial might, or perhaps our bastard elder brother has finally reappeared. Did the rangers happen to bring one of the arrows that was loosed at them?
>>
>>24406641
"'round twenty, m'lord. Had one of the smart 'uns do a head count when we got back. 's seventy-four of us left."

The Maester gestured to a handful of arrows on the table. They're standard arrows, just like the ones you are your men with, with wood pigeon fletching and wicked barbed tips crafted from steel, some of the barbs having broken off in removal, the tiny shards of metal lying next to the arrows.
>>24406686
"We got chased half the way 'ere, m'lord. They scattered once we got near the walls, got no idea what the savage bastards are up to at the moment..."

We need intel before we decide anything. The state of their forces, our and our allies' forces, is it campaign season, etc. But yes, the Milk Snakes need to go.
>>
>>24406771
Do we buy our arrows or are they made by a local fletcher?
>>
I'm thinking we take the rangers off harassment duty, and get them recruiting from the poachers and hunters, and re-training.

We'll give Sir Tenry a break for now, give him time to calm down and when he feels up to it, bring him back in to train the green rangers.

For now, I think we ask Ser Corbray what we should do. Call a War Council. Possibly send a raven to the Egens

>>
>>24406790
This.

I dunno about you lot, but this sounds like the work of another house to me. Before we march anywhere, we need more information. Someone is either eloping the hill tribes or working against us. Before we do anything, we need evidence and information.
>>
we should do something super sneaky to reveal if house Belmore are assisting the Milk Snakes?
Or maybe just take some prisoners and ask where they got the bows and whatnot.
>>
>>24406771

>>
would now be a good time to send archers to the battlements just in case?

Our men got chased, the wildlings could be coming....

"Seems like foul play, m'lord. Someone has to be giving the hillsfolk arms, maybe even training them. I doubt anyone'd be stupid enough to send their own troops to work with mountain men."
"I ain't so sure, Ser Morys. M'lord, these rangers, they didn't see a damn thing 'fore they got shot and they didn't see a damn thing after. These folks are better at hiding than our men. That's somethin' to worry about."
"Lord Harrock, good Sers, there's no reason to be so alarmed by these affairs. It's simply a case of 'Ser' Tenry losing his touch and becoming lazy. It's likely that the hill tribes just looted the bows off fallen soldiers."
"That's a crock of shit, Corbray. Savages don't know how to use bows, otherwise we'd 'ave seen this be--"

An archer interrupts, bursting into the grim, candle-lit feast hall where you're meeting with your knights.

"Lord Harrock! The beacon at Wetrock is lit, the tower's under siege!"

I'm currently looking at creating a map as soon as possible. At the moment though, I've got nothing to offer.

It's roughly half an hour's journey to the North-East, on the Northern bank of the Westflow. Several miles, but made much easier and faster by an entire downhill journey from the castle.
>>24407248
>>24407238
The raven will arrive at House Egen in three hours, and it's a two hour journey their capitol from there to High Harrock.
>>24407282
This is it. You, Ser Morys, Ser Boros. Ser Tenry should also be here, but Ser Lyn is able to take his place as the ranger-knight is injured and quite drunk at the moment.
>>24407278
The wetland rangers are currently resting in their barracks in High Harrock. They're already up and ready, like the archers and are able to respond at a moment's notice. The same applies to the mountain rangers, although they're a damaged unit after the losses they sustained.
>>24407342
You spent the defence in order to get a castle and two towers - but due to being constructed by a master mason, all of your structures are quite sturdy.

The garrison at Wetrock will be able to hold out, for a time. Their chance at breaking the siege is unlikely.

Horses, ten. All of them are trained for combat, as befits any sort of steed in the Vale. Some people say a knight should have a horse for riding and a horse for war. When a mountain man can come at you out of nowhere, riding and war are the same thing. As for side-gates, there's one that leads to a hidden path all the way up the mountains, to Skycliff.
>>24407444
The war council has already started. You and your knights are all together - these are most experienced men you have.

>>24407422
Sending the rangers to Wetrock - Ser Boros volunteers to lead them there and back. Ser Lyn suggests a full march out to eliminate the mountain men, as High Harrock has strong enough walls and gates to withstand a siege of its own until we're able to return. Meanwhile, Ser Morys insists that we should wait for House Egen to arrive before we strike the besieging forces from opposite sides and crush them entirely, leaving a token force to defend High Harrock.

As you wish to start off with the rangers, you send them out with your spear-wielding knight to lead them. What message do you wish to send to the Egens? Marshal their forces? Come immediately?
>>
>>24407557
I don't know if getting Egens is a smart idea...
>>

You send a raven to inform them of the attack - but you don't make any request for aid. Not yet, at least.

Within the hour, dawn arrives and you move to the ramparts of High Harrock.. From there you can see the distant, lone figure of Wetrock beside the river, surrounded by a swarming throng of savages. It doesn't take too long for Boros to return with his men, confirming that there's roughly two hundred raiders laying siege to the tower, while roughly a hundred are others are scattered through the land, looting and pillaging and raiding isolated farms and hovels.

Ser Morys doesn't believe that paranoia's the correct way about to this - call upon House Egens and eliminate the siege together.
Ser Lyn continues to suggest an immediate push out, with all of your forces.
As for Ser Boros, he thinks that they could be handled, with just the wetland rangers and the garrison. No need to involve any allies or leave High Harrock too vulnerable.
>>
>>24407741

>>
>>24407796
Half an hour's march from High Harrock, at a brisk pace. The return journey's a little longer, due to the steepness of the slopes.
>>
>>24407775
>>24407775
I agree with Ser Boros, leaving the castle undefended is foolish, and waiting for reinforcements will take too long, a 5 hour ride is closer to a 10 hour march.

The knights and we should ride out as well, nothing like a good cavalry charge to break a line before the infantry push.
>>
>>24407788
Fuck it. Lets ride.
>>
>>24407775
Welp, let's go! Gather the troops as per Ser Boros' suggestion, get Brock saddled up, and lets go save our tower! Have some rangers scatter about looking for any other attackers. I still think this is a ploy to lure us out of Harrock. Tell the castellan to be extra vigilant.

>>
>>24407816
I think it's time we blooded our archers. Send half their number (100) out, screened by the wetlands rangers and with Sers Boros, Lyn, and Artys in command of them.

We should move in this kind of formation: a block of archers five across, with the rangers in a single-file line around the block. Once we get just within arrowshot have our archers divide into five blocks of twenty next to each other with stakes in front of them. The knights will stand in the gaps between each block to fight the clansmen that evade the stakes and volleys of arrows. The rangers anchor each flank of the line and rear to protect the rest of us.

All right - adding 50 archers to the mix. Ser Morys will be defending High Harrock, with the assistance of your son.

The journey is a short and hurried one, half-marching half-running to the battle where the barbaric savages swarm about the tower. Trees have been severed and used as impromptu battering rams, only to fail due to the many spears poking out of the tower's murder holes, combined with pieces of loose masonry being thrown from the top of the tower. Several crushed carcasses surround the tower as the bastards mill about it, looking for an opening or a way of bringing the tower down. By the time your men come to a stop, they're lurking in a copse barely a hundred and fifty yards from the opposing force.

It's time to begin. Roll 3d6, accepting the first roll, and compare it to my roll. The winner goes first.

Both your archers and your rangers are armed with bows, able to hit the raiders from this distance - and there are two units of raiders, one green and one trained. You also have a selection of stakes that either your archers or your wetland rangers can spend the turn planting.

I want one order per post from you guys - either for the archers or for the rangers. If you're rolling for the archers, you need to beat 12 on a roll of 3d6 in order for your order to count. If you're rolling for the rangers, you need to beat a roll of 9.

So, a roll of 3d6! I'll accept the first.

The green raiders, who were picked and poked at by the rain of arrows immediately turn to run, fleeing from the tower in their shock and surprise. They are two hundred yards away, at the very edge of your firing range. However, the more trained and prepared raiders turn away from the tower to run towards your line of archers - they are now a hundred yards away.

What do you guys want the rangers and the archers to do? No need to make them roll to do it anymore. I'll just take the popular vote.

The arrows seem to do minimal damage, piercing the hide armour of some of the savages but not taking out as many as you like. However, before the hillfolk charge any closer, the soldiers of Wetrock suddenly burst through the gates of the tower with a loud and thunderous roar, slamming into the rear of the mountain men and engaging in glorious combat with them, slicing many of the savages down. This is enough to break the hill tribes, turning them into a disorganised mess. They try to fight back against the garrison but only succeed to claw and flail at shields and spears.

Your turn. There's a potential to hit the garrison if you shoot, but if you succeed in hitting the raiders it could end this fight once and for all. Do you?

All right, might as well get this over with.

Directing the archers and rangers both forward to engage with the savages, you move past the stakes to engage with the bastards. The garrison pushes them back further, forcing the hill tribes beyond that breaking point and making them turn and flee - straight into your own men. Sandwiched between your forces, it takes only a few moments for the savages to be butchered.

The siege was broken with relative ease, and very little pain on either side. Of course, half of the raiders have fled into the wilderness, to warn their friends and assist them.

What do you wish to do, now that the fighting's over?
>>
>>24408969

Actually, at this point - I think we'll end. It's a bit of a low point, after the boring slog of the fight but hopefully we can continue on Friday 9PM, where you can talk with the commander of the garrison and perhaps find the solution to the Milk Snake problem.
