You head around the tower, checking in on everyone. Your dad is enjoying a relaxing snack with the meals. Liz and Selene are both sleeping in their respective beds. Lin is dancing around the sitting room listening to music in her slutty witch costume. Gaviscon and the unnamed water elemental are chasing each other through the tower.

What do you do now?
>>

Could we create a mind drill variant that extracts memories from the soul of a target without resorting them to their owner? Because that could be seriously useful for future interrogations.

Let's relieve some Strain with Breakfast, and then we can either go out and get a pile of tasty meat for Selene to trade for her Candy, or we can Alchemy it up, either way we should Drain some because we want to be in good shape if we end up going out.

>Agreed, set it up to discourage the Meals from thinking of their pre-Meal lives.
I would think it is better so that it makes them rethink their old memories in a way that is positive to us.
>We could also set up a seed to shut down their magic or incapacitate them if the Meals ever try turning on us.
If we do our job right this should never occur... but I can't see the harm in having this as an extra in addition to other alterations. It would also help if someone mind controls them.

Sure. That's a ludicrously long-term project, just like anything that involves the mind drill, though. The mind drill was preposterously complex and specialized, designed around how Lin's reincarnation cycle already works. It's perfectly possible to adapt it into something, but it will be a long and hard process.

By comparison, the memory storage device is the easy part.

Something like this is a complicated research project, something we'll want a pile of spare time, and to be looking over it with Dad and Lin at the same time to create and finetune it, it doesn't seem like the sort of thing to do while killing some time before trick-or-treating, it seems like a good option for time-skipping instead of us sitting here rolling dice to develop it when we could be doing actual stuff.

>>24344063
Set up everything we need done for tonight's activities, meat snacks for Selene, asking Lin where we're partying afterwards, making sure our Mom knows we're coming to visit, complimenting our Pets on how good they look right now and draining a bit from Breakfast.

double check our plans then tell Lin that we plan to take Liz and us are taking Selene to New York then after she is done Trick-or-treating Liz and us are going to go out with her. Find out her club plans then work on the drill.
>>
>>24344184
That would prevent them regaining relevant magical skills which they could put to good use around the house.

So fart I have got the following SEPARATE mind seeds:
1. When trying to attack any of the masters, freeze, be unable to do magic, and state what you were trying to do (suggested originally as defense against rebellion but I like it because it helps against mind control too).
2. When recalling memories (not via drill, but whenever you THINK about the past), view such memories in a way that reinforces loyalty rather then degrade it (consult dad on specifics for that one).
3. Suppress or ignore the emotional component of memories from their life before being renamed by max.
4. Avoid noticing mind alterations by max, liz, or dad.
5. Avoid suspecting max of using magic to control them, their loyalty is natural.
6. If loyalty to max wanes, inform her, inform her why, and restore said loyalty automatically.
7. Do not have the desire to recover memories which aren't approved of by max.

In addition to that, regularly inspect their minds and do manual corrections as the drill does it job. With unwanted mind fragments being locked up rather then being destroyed (to avoid having the drill re-recover them).

In addition to all the above, you could have the drill put all memories into a special construct that is not fully self aware and is serving as a lockbox, which can then be perused by dad or max for memories to be manually reintegrated into their main consciousness if deemed appropriate.
>>
>>24344278
We plan to be trick or treating until what, 10pm New York time? That would be 5am at the scholomance. Classes start at 8am right?
>>
>>24344309
If you have the mind drill put all of the memories in the lockbox like you suggested at the end of your post then the rest is entirely pointless
>>
>>24344309
This is bad as changes for normal operation but as precautions when using the mind drill on them i support this 100% except

You spend a few hours studying Sorcery and make a little progress towards learning more. When you finally set down your book, there's a little less than an hour before you're due in New York.

What do you do now?
>>
>>24344786
>He has a crush on us and thinks we're helping him
Or he is a good actor... OR he was wrapped around our finger but had his mind inspected by an elder of the hand and is now laying a counter trap.
>we haven't actually sabotaged him, we're just planning to
We put a perception filter in him (not study sabotage)
We taught him how to detect auras properly (not sabotage, but espionage since we stole a hand secret)
We taught him "an old but classical" mind defense that has a fatal flaw (sabotage)

We are planning on making his balls produce female hormones (not study sabotage). Which btw is a terrible idea because its a well known fact that only lotus can perform such a feat, so if its caught it WILL be traced back to us and is bad for lotus. Furthermore it makes us lose a chance to steal more hand secrets. If we want to be rid of him we can go dane style and just break his mind defenses, steal knowledge, erase all his knowledge of magic and us, and make him drop out. But I am tempted to plant a few more seeds and keep him as a Hand plant to steal more of their secrets.

Meta knowledge, and yea I find it extremely unlikely but we can't take such risks and there is little benefit to it. He is good at it but a terrible student so he probably teaches poorly. Liz is a better tutor as are all the older lotus members.
Also, I am more concerned about my other point... an elder of the hand could have inspected him and found your mind virus and did their alterations to lay a counter trap.
Furthermore it would be a good way to lower his self esteem (we surpass him without needing his help) and to slow down his advances, plus do you want to put up with more of him?

>>
>>24345200
>if you fear an elder hand made him a sleeper why in hell do you suggest using him as a mole?
Because the rewards (and admittedly risk too) of having a mole in hand are great (hand secrets), rewards of him tutoring us are nil because we can be tutored better by:
1. Allies in tower
2. Study group
3. Older lotuses

The only reason he is being tutored outside of his own society (which is extremely unusual) is that he is rather incompetent and is too embarrassed to show further incompetence.

>Plus we want him as a foci bitch
If that is really what you want then just tear into his mind, make him drop out, and then pick him up and brainwash him afterwards.
However, I am going to say that we have as much slaves as we can handle right now and he can't be fed on.

Bull. His is better than anyone at home at sorcery including Liz and i bet he isn't terrible at teaching that subject. Plus having him tutor us may give us cool secrets that none else can give us because he may be a less capable teacher with more skills to teach then Liz.

>If that is really what
that is my ideal but I don't want to mind rape him for it i want to seduce him it is more moral and more fun.

You go around, collecting up Liz and Selene. Liz is already awake again and taking a shower; you leave her to it. Selene, though, you wake up, leaving the little girl yawning.

"Are you ready to get dressed up in your costume?" you ask your daughter. She nods excitedly at that, and you get to work getting her into the costume Liz made for her. You get her all dressed up and she struts around in her costume for a while. You make sure to slip the charm that Liz had carefully made - a minor passive field of normalcy - around her neck too.

That done, you get Liz, who's now dressed again, and this time wearing a slinky black gown along with her various devil accessories, and head on up to the outbound circle. Your dad is relaxing there, playing cards with the meals and Lin. They pause to send the three of you out.

The three of you find yourselves standing in the apartment where you grew up. It's a pretty nice place in Queens. You're standing in the living room - well, living space - which is sparsely furnished. Your bedroom's door is off to one side, next to your mom's. The lights are also all off, evening light coming in through the windows. Your mom must not be home. Liz starts turning on the lights, while Selene wanders off to explore.

It's almost like you never even left.

What do you do?

You send your mother a text, telling her that you're home. She sends one back saying that she's stuck commuting and will be home as soon as possible. You lead Selene slowly around the house, explaining all sorts of little things to her like light switches, watching her figuring out that there aren't any ladders, and, best of all, watching her look at the sun setting behind Manhattan.

Fap just stares out the window. Selene's little mouth hangs agape. Finally, after a few minutes, she asks, "That's the sky?"

"It sure is," you tell her.

"It's big," she says.

"Very," you agree.

"It's pretty," she says.

"Extremely," you confirm.

"Can we live here now?" she asks.

"No, sweetie. Only during breaks," you tell her.

"Breaks?"

"Breaks from living at school," you tell her. "In a little more than a month, we'll be coming home for part of the winter. Then, in the summer, we'll spend some time here again."

"I like the sky," she says.

"I know, sweetie," you tell her.

You go looking for Liz. You find her in your room, not touching anything, and just looking around slowly. The free weights - now light enough to be meaningless - in the corner. Your computer. Your bed. And all of the scattered detritus of a teenager's life.

"So, what do you think?" you ask her. She jumps a little.

"This place is... Small," she says. "I don't know what I was expecting. It's New York, after all."

Is prolonged absence from sanctum a good idea? You have to leave dad and the meals there, a newborn dryad has to be brought to a mundane house or left with dad. You are dangerously exposed in an unwarded house and any other student scrying you will find mom.

>>
>>24346828
Permanent wards powered by an elemental, yes.
Also modifying extending wards is much more difficult then making brand new ones and the wards dad works on are amazingly high quality and ward against many things.

The only way we can even CONSIDER a prolonged stay with mom is to buy and build up a secondary sanctum home for her specifically.
Or we just don't do prolonged stay, teleport in, temp wards on, enjoy some hours, teleport out.
Repeat several days in a row.

I am most concerned though about mom's safety, people could very well track us to her if we are not careful... at the moment only the administrators know, a student has to hack school net (unlikely until 5th year) or track us down themselves (very likely if they scry us now because we are literally defenseless.

Furthermore, we never explained to mom how DANGEROUS things are at the school.

Ok so here is my idea... for this visit Temp wards against detection only that last only a few hours. We will have to hope nobody uses conjuration or enchantment or something more serious to attack us. (although the can do the latter whenever we leave home).

And no more future visits until we get things done right. Having her move in with you would be safest but be the end of her career and damn do we not want to explain the meals and dad and so on.
So instead converse with her over the phone tomorrow and clarify things. Then temporary break contact with her.
Then we need to find a new home for her, she should not move in there yet. Instead we make it into a properly warded backup sanctum from which she can work (as well as giving her a set of charms to carry around at all time... say, enchanted earrings or tattoos or something.
When its fully ready, reestablish contact with her and have her relocate to the new place. At which you could visit her safely.

We can just use enchantment to throw off IRS but if we really really want to seem "legit" we should just fake a sudden inheritance from a different country for mom.

You know, we don't even have to fake a shipwreck, we can probably magically locate a real one that hasn't been found yet and "find" it. >>
>>24348176
yea but people want to sell enough to become a multi millionere at which point it becomes more difficult.

Hence the plan of:
1. Scry a real shipwreck
2. "find" it yourself
3. put all money from it in a trustfund.

>>24348225
I completely forgot until right now.

People seem paranoid (as usual) that any kind of productive actions not involving the copious usage of magic threaten our safety. Selling gold to some licensed schmuck in NY is not going to get a mob of ex-archmages on our asses. That would be ridiculous. We can funnel $15,000 of gold through a privately-owned family gold shop and walk out with a single document to sign for. Thinking that doing something as harmless as that will get us in deep shit is beyond paranoid and just outright pussy-footing.
>>
>>24348209
Well, as soon as it's "safe" to walk around again, we should consider using some of our free time to go there and transfer all the stuff inside back to the tower. I'm pretty sure FemCOCK meant for us to learn something from all those documents.
>>
>>24348242
>We can funnel $15,000
I am pretty sure the people being paranoid about it want to add at least 4 zeroes to that figure (which is kinda pointless)... but I might just be giving them too much credit
>>
>>24348257
yes i think we still have a chance of restoring that ash but it will be more work than if we hadn't flubbed our first role.
>>
>>24348300
since there are a whole bunch of those books there, we should craft enough perm foci to maximize our rolls and restore all of them as a foundation of our library.

oooh, if any are overdue library books we could use them as a bribe too.
>>
>>24348300
Weren't there other books in that place?
>>
>>24348317
Oh yes, that'd be good too. After we finish studying their contents, though.
>>
>>24348280
Their lack of scale is astounding. Do they have any idea how much $15,000 would mean to our single mother? Dropping $15k to our mother every six or so months won't draw any attention, like, at all, and easily push her from working class to middle class. Any tax laws can probably be circumvented with a good tax expert and a trust fund. They ask where the money is coming from? We have an inheritance from some relatives in eastern Europe. Done.
>>
>>24348344
You realize the Librarian can read minds and you are proposing a delay in the return of overdue books, right?
>>
>>24348381
Bluh, no fun!
>>
>>24348369
Remind me what her base salary is, because is was under the impression that she was middle class but living in one of the most expensive areas in the USA.
>>
>>24348280
yes if we want medium amounts of money we need next to no prep but shit tons of money is another matter.

the is why my nwe plan is
1. Scry a real shipwreck
2. "find" it yourself
3 by a working gold mine
4 use enchantment to screen interviewees for the mine manager position
5 higher the best applicant to run it for us
6 dope the mine output with alchemical gold
7 now we can dispose of almost any amount of alchemical gold at no extra effort for crystal clean mortal money we can do anything with. & nave a source of automatic non magical income.

we didn't check it out though

Those kinds of stores buy gold in jewelry format at a significant rip-off level undercut. Not exactly a good idea since we've already got decent channels to buy through.
>>
>>24348446
True, but depending on whether she's making 60k or 80k a year I may simply have a different understanding than you.
>>
>>24348478
And the quick look answer is roughly 90-100k a year. I'm thinking middle class over working.
>>
Didn't we already talk to Sam and he can liquidate some gold for us anyway?

Average RN Salary in Ny, Ny: $98k

>>
>>24348344

She would probably going to be happy enough with that to allow us to check them out.

>>24348424
That seems like an ironclad plan for becoming fabulously wealthy. But the latter steps are probably more effort then they are worth. Yes they would make us more fabulously wealthy in mortal terms but we hardly have the time for it right now. A few extra points of body enchantment are probably gonna be time better spent.

You know... mortal money is considered worthless in mage-mage economic dealings to the point where none of them even accept it accord to sam... We could commission some mages to arrange for a trust fund, associated government dealings, etc with large amounts of mortal money in exchange for some magical good.

>>24348568
Yes, he did actually.
>>
>>24348519
90k in NY is not nearly as much as, say, in the south or midwest. Probably still middle class, but sticking another 30k per year on that is neither suspicious nor small change.

>>24348583
And I thought a 4-room apartment on Burbank down in Baton Rouge was expensive at $1,100 a month. Mother of god.
>>
>>24348583
How about in Queens?
>>
>>24348519
Depends on location, too. I'm around 33K myself in Minneapolis, but rent is so low here I can afford a 760 sq ft 1-bedroom without a roommate or outside assistance..

Oh agreed, I just don't like Max's mother being painted as a downtrodden, over worked and over burdened woman that we must save from the oppressive tyranny of her existence. It undermines the impressiveness of her life and what she's been able to built for herself and Max without any real support (pretty sure her relationship with her parents was rocky at best). I fully recognize I'm overreacting to what I assume is one poster, but it just rubs me the wrong way.
>>

Google it like I did.

>gonna be time better spent
probably but if we want Very large amounts of legally spotless mortal money that is the plan.

>You know... mortal money is considered worthless in mage-mage economic dealings to the point where none of them even accept it accord to sam... If you reed between the lines what Sam said was the medium amounts are worthless and only Enormous amounts, with no legal hangups, are worth anything and this is why. Its not the money you are buying or selling it is that the money is clean.

30k as long as she has a flimsy cover for it and keeps working great. The big problem is when sh goes to school and we have no large safely documented income to hide behind.

We've heard literally nothing about them so that might be a safe assumption, but on the other hand we hardly ever talk about Mom either.

>Oh agreed, I just don't like Max's mother being painted as a downtrodden, over worked and over burdened woman that we must save from the oppressive tyranny of her existence.
Oh, I never meant she was poor and eating breadcrumbs. As I said, I live in LA, so my idea of "working class" and "middle class", as far as living arrangements and income, is entirely different from NY. It's difficult, for me, to think that having a two-bedroom apartment like that is considered "middle-class", when that same classification down here is having around an acre of land and a 2,000 square-foot house with two to three vehicles. Then again, that kind of a setup will run you about $300,000 total down here, versus the easy half-a-million for a house half that size alone in New England, so the cost of living skews the entire perspective for me. I've never lived in a place where more than 15% of all residents were in apartments.
>>
>>24348850
Semi rural mid west her I have a similar perspective.
shes not Poor its just that Max wants better for her Mom and has all this money that she can't just throw at the problem and solve it like magic.
My big concern is putting Mom through collage we can give her a good boost while she is working and cause little suspicion but if she has no income that gets hard.
>>
>>24348850
I get the feeling you've never bought a house. I live in a small town near Sacramento and my one story three bedroom house with not a ton of land was worth $400,000 before the bubble burst. I know you fucks live in worthless desert but with all the water you steal during droughts I don't imagine your land and housing can be THAT cheap.
>>
>>24349082
I meant LA, not L.A. Louisiana, not Los Angeles.
>>
>>24349178
Ah, right. That makes sense then.
>>
>>24349360
Yeah, you can build what would be considered a luxury house in the northeast in this area for about, ehh, $150,000 after land purchases. It's so stupidly cheap. So stupidly, stupidly cheap. Then again, the average wage around here is like 55k or something, so there you have it.
