Afternoon everyone!
Another rainy day in the PNW. I shouldn't be surprised anymore. Let's run some tanks.

==

A cannon shot has you sitting bolt upright in your bed.

You're covered with sweat, though that could be because you didn't set your AC the night before and your room feels like a broiler. Dragging yourself out of bed, you damn near trip and kill yourself over both your boots and your new Saber. Drawing your curtains back, you immediately hiss and slam them shut again. The sun, having attempted to burn a hole directly through your face, is mid-rise, which would explain why your room is so hot.

You shuffle over to the thermostat on the wall-mounted AC unit and crank it to “sub-arctic”. After making sure it kicks on and is producing, you flop back into bed. Fifteen seconds later, another roar of thunder makes you pry your eyelids back open. It came from the kitchenette of your suite. You crawl back out of bed.

Opening your door, you're welcomed by Nicky, Mega, and Anderson frozen turkey bowling at empty beer bottles. The crashes either come from bottles detonating, or their chosen 'ball' slamming into a cabinet. You're just in time to watch Anderson wind up and hurl the butterball down the 'lane', denoted by duct tape on the tiles, and slam into the bottles. Three or four of them shatter instantly, and the others rocket off in many different directions.

“SSSSSSSSSTRIIIIIIIIKEEEE! HOYEAAAAAA, GET SOME ARMOR, FUCKIN' INFANTRY ALL DAY! WOOOOO!” He shouts, slamming his thumbs into his chest before taking a pull at an open beer bottle. Mega, muttering something under his breath, uses a pushbroom to sweep up the glass shards into a mountainous pile and starts collecting the errant survivors. Nicky retrieves the turkey, spinning his arm around to loosen up his shoulder.

“Yeah, I got one for you, sir.” He stands at the end of the 'lane' on the balls of his feet, holding the bird in front of his face. Dropping to his heels and taking two powerful strides across the room, he pitches the bird at an alarming rate at the floor, where it bounces, spins, then tumbles into the bottles. Most of them are crushed and spin away from the turkey, though one gets airborne and slams into the window, shattering and leaving the remnants to trickle down the glass.

“WOOOOOOOO! MOTHERFUCKIN' ARMOR! STRAIGHT OUTTA GODDAMN MINNEAPOLIS!” He shouts in victory. He turns, grinning, and then locks eyes with you.

“Oh...fuck.”

You pinch the bridge of your nose. It was far, far too early for this garbage.

“You know what? I just....I just lack words. Clean up after yourselves. In fact, clean and sober up right now anyway. We gotta go check out our new wheels.” You say, sighing at the end. You turn back into your room, heading directly into your room's latrine before anyone can respond.

After taking a hot shower for once, and hacking back the foliage growing outside of your face, you set into a freshly starched set of BDUs. The lack of decent meals, you notice, has taken it's toll. Where the uniform used to be well filled across the arms, shoulders, and chest, it now hung freely. If you ever manage to get a stable billet, you think to yourself, you'll have to get a decent set of weights there too. Can't run a ball if Joe Schmoe can tackle you off the snap!

Back in the main room, which has been cleaned immaculately, Lieutenant Anderson sits with a fresh pot of coffee. His uniform, not quite anything you've ever seen before, is also cleanly pressed. Even his beret, tucked cleanly into his epaulette, seems to be in perfect condition.

“Care for a cuppa, sir?”

You shrug.

“I don't see Nicky or Mega around. Looks like we've got a minute.”

Anderson nods, pouring the dark liquid into a clean white mug. He slides it to you across the breakfast bar, before pouring himself a cup. “Cream, sugar sir?”

“Twos.” Growing up, though he had been a tough man, your father always spoiled your brothers and you on camping trips with 'sweet coffee', which is more sugar with a little bit of coffee added. You never really outgrew it, though you're now down to two sugarcubes instead of the whole bag.

“They're downstairs, in the lobby, by the way. Waiting for the ride out, and that gunner of yours is, and I quote, 'just chasin' some city tail, no harm in that is there LT?'” He gets Nicky's accent spot on.

“Heh. Not surprised.”

“Hey, sir? Did you hear anything about Sargeant Rockfield?” he asks, pushing the pot back into the coffee maker.

You shake your head. “Nah, got the run around from the hospital. Got punched into the neurology shop, they said she's in the OR and to try to get into contact with them today. Gonna do that as soon as I get a minute, after we check out our new horses.”

He scoffs. “You mean your new horses.”

“Shit LT, I reckon ya'll would've been excited to hear that we're getting new 'vettes.”

“once again, you mean your new 'vettes. I don't think we're getting any new gear today, and if we are, we're gonna need some time to train on it. Shall we?” He says, slamming the last of his joe down.

Downstairs, most of the company is formed up in the lobby, trying hard to stay out of trouble. A mess of rowdy enlisted folk and a few witches with zero officer supervision does not generally mean good things for an establishment or it's bar, though this early in the day you figure that it's safe. Being that it's locked up, you're absolutely right.

Your transport arrives, Nicky having called the proving grounds for them from the front desk phone. You can't help but think that it's irresponsible for the army to put you up so far from the post with no way back to the post, but oh well. Someone had said that this counts as your leave too, right?

The ride on the big deuce and a half, cut short by a police escort just outside of Baltimore’s city limits, is full of the company ribbing one another and making jokes. Nobody's really sure about the new equipment, nor are they of your next posting...but that's not until you've trained on this new vehicle. You hope.

Once past the gates and the MP's, you dismount in a grassy field with rolling dirt hills in the distance. Nearer to you, however, a GP medium tent is set up just outside of four canvas-covered vehicles. You don't know which to prod at first, knowing that peeking at Christmas presents is generally a no-no.

You get the troops in a loose formation, leaving sergeants Warner and Meany in charge. “Alright, now you boys and girls behave. We got some people to talk to, I think.”

You tap Anderson on the shoulder and point to the tent flap. Stepping inside, you're met with a few familiar faces from France, Doctor Light being one of them.

“Ah! Captain! Lieutenant! I'm glad to see you. I must say, you missed out an exquisite dinner the other night.” He says with a smile.

“Aw, hell doc. We had a pretty good one ourselves, sir.” Anderson replies with a grin. You're pretty sure the look you give him could kill a weaker man.

Doctor Light chortles, shaking the both of your hands. “The captain seems to disagree!”

You wave it away. “Ah, it was all good, doc. So, I guess today is the day we see why we were pulled out of combat?” You cut straight to business.

“Ah! Yes! The Achilles and the Myrmidon! Working names, of course. I doubt whoever it is that cooks up the actual names for these things wouldn't allow them to be named after ancient Greek warriors. There are, however, a few things you must know beforehand, gentlemen. First is that these are both prototype vehicles and we can't guarantee that you'll have them forever. Sooner or later, the ride will have to end.” You both nod your acknowledgment. “The second, and I'm sure that you both are well used to hearing this by this point, is that everything you are about to see is highly classified. So much so that this area has a security cordon stopping just about everyone but us and General Lindsay from being here. Needless to say, to quote the general himself, you are to “keep your lip zipped!”'

1/2
>>
>>24344964

He's right, both you and Anderson are well used to hearing that by this point in the war. Almost every operation you had in Germany was the same way, as was working under General Garrison.

The good doctor turns, and presents a thermos to you both. “More of Emily's cocoa. If for no other reason than to allow me to talk.” He says, smiling. You pour yourself a Styrofoam cup full, before handing the container to Anderson, who drinks it straight out of the chromed thermos.

From behind him, a lab technician hands Light a clipboard. “Bah!” he exclaims, throwing his hands into the air. “Nothing can ever get done correctly! Tell them that this has to be installed and calibrated as soon as possible!” He shouts to the busily retreating tech before signing at the bottom.

“Anyhow, I suppose you have many questions, but you get a choice. I may either present you with the classified data on the Achillies gun, or you may see it for yourself. I believe the test pilots have it all warmed up for you.”

You set your cup down.

“I must be outside when you do this. I must see my gunner's face.”

Doctor Light gets a chuckle and waves you outside. There, a few techs and even fewer tankers are mulling about, just out of reach of your company. You can easily see the divide. Though, your company's witches aren't in jumpsuits with headsets on. The other two, wearing what you assume to be the emblem of the Achilles project on their shoulders, quietly talk amongst their crew. You cock an eyebrow.

“Doc, I'm not seeing any strikers here.” You say, motioning to the other two witches.

“And you won't! The more we see combat evolve, the more we realize that strikers are becoming obsolete. Slowly, sure. And in specific applications, they still have very relevant uses. Raids and that sort of thing. However, on the front line, they are beginning to put the individual witch at more risk than needed. So I present this, the XM2A1 Achilles!”

He cuts his eyes to a few of the techs, who rip the canvas covers off of two of the vehicles.

“The pinnacle of armored warfare to this point. No other vehicle has had the potential to achieve what this vehicle can.”

You level with yourself. It's sort of ugly. Either that, or you're still in love with the Abrams' aesthetic design.

The hull looks surprisingly like an Abrams does, boxy in the ass and stepping down into a razor edge in the front. The driver's hatch, however, has been radically redesigned, instead of being just a single manhole cover sized hatch, it's now a horizontal door shape crossing under the gun. The turret, however, is where the real difference occurs.

If you had to make the guess, you would think that someone stole the Hellhounds' turret and stuffed it onto the Abrams body. But that wouldn't be a very good guess at all. The similarities are in shape, boxy in the ass and pointed up front, however the guns and hatches are wholly different. Tiny, nickel sized holes adorn the front of the turret around the creases of the proto-plating boxes, which cover the front and rear. Even the 'crap-rack', where you normally store cases of MRE's and the jerry cans full of ass water is covered in them, though it's no longer a rack and now more of a bin. Around the barrel, which is surprisingly short, being only eight or so feet long, sits a protective canvas shroud, lashed down with loose ratchet straps.

I doubt the witch community agrees with such a mindset as the end result would likely be a marginization of witches for the most part, objectifying them even more.

For the most part, regular T-72s and T-64s fare more than poorly against NATO witches, and we haven't been shot by Bloc witches to see how do we hold up against them.

>[] “Jesus Christ, did someone go at this thing with a hyperactive child? What's with all the holes?!”

You look closely at the minute holes in the armor plating.

“Uh, doc? The fuck is this garbage?”

“Ah! Yes, I can see where the confusion would spawn from. Those, captain, are cameras. You see, as combat evolves, even armored warfare, it becomes less about your ability to fight a prolonged battle and more about the ability to hit the enemy first, hit him harder than he can hit you, and hit him when he isn't looking. And the best part about those is that we haven't taken any of your protective measure. The turret is still bunker, as it was with the Abrams. Plus, from far enough away, nobody can even tell that they're there.

“The cameras are all networked together, and the imaging that they give is projected onto the inside of your turret. As commander, you now have full three-hundred-sixty degree view of the battlefield, wholly unimpeded. All relevant combat data, such as range to target, gun targeting data, et cetera, is sent to your HMD in the helmet. Oh, captain. You have so much more reading to do.” He says with a grin.

You step around the vehicle, taking in the nuances of it's design.

“So you're friggin' telling me that these are cameras, and I'm not gonna be sitting in front of a screen anymore?” You ask, taking a closer look.

“Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying! Captain, your helmet is now your screen. Your gunner's reticule is sent to his helmet. Your driver's information, to his. Your loader's current load and rounds remaining, to his. Even your defensive systems crewman's information is sent to her helmet! This leaves us so much more room for armor, the witch integration suite, and the networked combat system!”

But it is true that having a bigger focus array lets the Witch project a more powerful shield, which makes a Witch Tank far more likely to survive both conventional tanks and tank Witches.

Actually, I think the logical extension is that the Witch Tank is an intermediary stage, until a powerplant and control computers can be miniaturized to the point that a single Witch is, once again, the premier fighter on the battlefield. Ensconced within a 3-meter tall suit of powered armor, with a focusing crystal array to allow it to project shields powerful enough to stop 120mm tank cannons and yet still as agile as a tank Striker.

I mean most of these witches have been training in their specialities since their pre-teens and if this becomes big, they'll be asked to put that aside just to help men score more medals/etc.

And I have a suspicion that such projects are intentionally getting put ahead of striker research, after all this stuff is the 89 version of the Warlock, something made to replace witches by people who didn't like them.
