Welcome to the third episode of A Game of Thrones – The Quest of House Harrock.
Previously: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/24264225/
All Previous Threads: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Harrock

In this quest, the year is 284AL and it is six months after Robert Baratheon was crowned king. You are Ser Artys Harrock, thirty-eight years old and the head of House Harrock, sworn to House Arryn of the Mountain and Vale. You are a dedicated, devoted and cunning man, eager to see the rebirth and stability of your house from its ruined state. With a head for numbers, a good sword-hand and an exotic Valyrian yataghan named 'Ambition,' you shall lead your family to new wealth and new stability.

During the last episode, you interrogated a collection of Milk Snake clansmen that you had captured. As a result of this, you discovered their location, a small grove to the South of your territory nestled in the mountains. You sent a group of your rangers to harass them and turned your attention to family isssues. Your son Brock is a fat fool who cares more for fisticuffs than his future as a ruler and you've taken it upon yourself to educate the boy – so far with moderate success. In order to further his education, you are about to take him on a trip to House Egen. This is a great opportunity to teach your son about the art of diplomacy and learn a bit more about his potential bride-to-be.

Is anyone interested in continuing?

Before I do so however, here's a little stat sheet that contains the basic information of your character, for those of you who are familiar with the ASOIAF system.

“Remind me about House Egen, Alric.”

“They occupy the region to our East, known as Crown Crag and reign from a lightly defended hall they call 'the Crown.' They're famous for their stubborn nature and the cider produced by their sept's orchard. Until recently they were of little importance – but Ser Vardis Egen has risen to favour with Jon Arryn after Robert's Rebellion, elevating him to the rank of Captain of the Guard and bringing House Egen up with him.”

While you listen to your beloved uncle, you and your companions arm and armour yourselves for the journey ahead. Arming doublets are worn beneath mail shirts, with your torsos covered by breast and back plates of hard leather. Your gauntlets, boots and leggings are all crafted from softer, more malleable leather for easier movement. To journey unarmoured through the Vale is suicide.

“Lord Loras Egen is the brother of Vardis and the ruler of Crown Crag. He is a selfish and unruly man who ran off to Braavos when he was just Brock's age. He only returned a decade ago with a wife, a son and daughter in tow. They say that his father died of shock as soon as he saw Loras and the boy inherited his lands and titles right there.”

“Is there anything else you would like to know about House Egen?”
>>
>>24340696

His family, they are Braavosi?

"His wife is Braavosi, yes. I'm afraid I don't know much of her; no one does. All I can tell you is what I've heard from others, that she barely knows how speak the common tongue. As for the children, they carry the seed of their father therefore they are Valemen. I wouldn't be surprised if they have some Braavosi blood in them however, from the mother's side."

I love the family picture. I pictured Brock as a little fatter and Artys as shorter, but this is still golden. Thanks for whoever did it.

'Tell me of the others within his house. Has he any brothers? Sisters? How well do they love their new sister-in-law? And do these potential brothers and sisters have children of their own? How well did the children react to learning that their parents nor they themselves would inherit the title of 'Head of the Household'?'
>>
>>24340939
"His brother, Ser Vardis Egen is the younger of the two. Perhaps he holds a grudge against his brother for the fact he did not inherit the house but perhaps he is better off for it, as he is now the Captain of the Guard at the Eyrie. From my knowledge, Vardis has been present at the Eyrie for quite a while as a member of Jon Arryn's court. He has no children of his own.

"In addition to this, there are no other living Egens that I know of. Perhaps there are cousins and distant relatives who belong to the dynasty but they do not live in the Egen household. Lord Loras, his brother Ser Vardis his wife Melicia and his two children, Albert and Lorenna are the only living members of House Egen that I know of at this moment in time."

Together with Brock and Ser Tenry, you set off along the road to your neighbours atop a trio of rounceys – it has been hard keeping the beasts alive through the hard times of your house but horses are an important status symbol. It only takes just over an hour for you to pass into the hilly, forested terrain of Crown Crag and only an hour longer before you arrive at the Crown itself. It's a pleasant, homely looking hall of stone and wood built atop a great hill, surrounded by a palisade and a bustling town. House Egen is doing well for itself.

You bring your horses up to the gates of the palisade in a trot, only to be halted by a pair of guards. Their tabards and surcoats carry the garish heraldry of House Egen, as do the banners and flags that decorate the walls and the roof of the hall before you. The burly men eye you up and down with suspicion before the one to your left speaks first, paying no mind to the sigil on your shield.

“Name 'n intention, sir. What brings you to the Crown, home o' Lord Loras of House Egen?”

How do you respond to such a question?
>>
>>24341244

Politely. We are here on diplomacy, after all.
>>
>>24341244
"I am Lord Artys of House Harrock. These with me are my firstborn son and heir, Brock, and my sworn sword, Ser Tenry. Days ago my maester sent a letter to your lord telling him of my coming to meet with him. He is expecting me and mine."
>>
>>24341279
>>24341305
"'pologies, m'lord. We live in difficult times 'n sometimes the clansmen stoop low enough to use house banners 'n shields to impersonate civilised peoples. Never works o' course, but it never helps to check."

With that the three of your are helped off your horses, which are quickly stabled while the other guard is sent for Lord Egen himself. Striding out from the doors to the hall he comes after a few minutes. A fairly short and scrawny fellow with long, lank brown hair and a square beard. His outfit is exceptionally ostentatious, bursting with stripes of yellow, blue and white while being quite loose and puffy, as befits the strange fashions of Braavos. Still, at least he greets you with a smile.

"Ah, my lord Harrock! It is a pleasure to meet you at long last, I was ever so sorry to hear about the death of your father but I am sure you shall lead your house to greater glory! Now, I believe you wished to come to discuss the finer details of our trade agreements? Shall I have the servants arrange lunch for us and your companions? I would hate to be a poor host."

He certainly doesn't lack enthusiasm.

>>24341279
Seconded.
>>
>>24341422
"That would be greatly appreciated, Lord Egen. The roads in the Vale are long and hale, as I'm sure you know. We will break bread and eat salt with you. Will your family be joining us?"

"But of course, it would be rude of me not to. And there is no need to be formal, we are all friends in my hall!"

Without further ado you are led into the expansive innards of the hall, decorated with elaborate paintings of Braavos and other locations, with strong focus of the sun, the moon and the stars, or other celestial objects pictured in the images. According to the boasts of Lord Loras, he was the very artist that painted them. Finally arriving by the feast table of the hall, many candles are lit to assist the light that streams in through the stained glass windows while you are each offered a seat. Servants are quickly called for, to fetch his family and prepare lunch for all eight of you. Seating himself, the faux-Braavosi nobleman turns his attention back to the three of you.

"Now Lord Harrock, please introduce me to your companions."
>>

My uncle sends his regards also, Lord Loras, for he knew your father well."

Beady hazel eyes narrow at Brock as Lord Egen's eyebrows shoot up in surprise. Apparently there is little resemblance between the two of you, at least from the eyes of such a stranger. Still, that smile remains of the face of your neighbour.

"Ah, well it is a pleasure to meet you Brock - I am certain that you shall bring your father pride and joy as his heir."
A brief, awkward silence follows as your son searches for words, to find nothing. He seems somewhat torn between offence and gratitude at those words, a response that Lord Egen seems satisfied with.
"As for you, Ser Tenry - a marksman without compare? I shall trust the words of your leige, although I would be interested to see your skills compared to those of my retainer, Arin. I have never seen a better huntsman in my entire life. Such a contest would truly be a marvel to behold."
Ser Tenry simply bows his head, allowing Lord Loras to turn his attention straight to you next, especially after the comment about his father. It's enough to cause him to sniff, his smile faltering briefly.
"Yes, well - it's common knowledge that I was never the best of friends with my father. I can profess that I hardly knew the man..."

The chattering of Braavosi comes from the side as the family approaches - although you do not understand the language, you can easily recognise the sound of a mother chiding her children.
"Ah! So my beautiful wife and progeny arrive. May I offer you some wine, Lord Harrock? Or perhaps some cider? Septon Broyce works miracles with apples."
>>
>>24341824

" I hear much and more of your Cider, Lord Egan, and would love to sample it."

>>
>>24341824
It has been too long since I have tasted cider, Lord Egen, and to have some made by hands blessed by the Seven, well, I trust it will be exceptional.
>>
>>24341862
>>24341875
This. Let's try some cider. Not too much though, I don't want to go the way of Alexander III on the way home. Maybe we should propose a hunt with Lord Loras?
>>
>>24341896
Oh, a very good idea - it'll let us pit Tenry's skills against those of Arin, and help us bond with Lord Egen.
>>
>>24341947
Exactly. We should find out what the state is of mountain men is in Lord Egen's lands are, first, and maybe send for some of our own men to join in the hunt in case we run into trouble.
>>
As the cider is poured, the Egens pour forth from a side-chamber, a mother, a son and daughter.

The first is Melicia, a tall and slender who was likely once beautiful, but age has rendered her only pretty. Her swarthy skin is concealed by a puffy and elaborate dress of gauzy fabric, garishly purple and oily black hair is left wavy and loose. Deep brown eyes expose her caution as she suspiciously eyes each of you, moving with discomfort in the confines of the dress. Still, she performs a half-hearted curtsey and seats herself.
Next is Albert Egen, with bright hazel eyes and pitch black hair, recently cut. The pale child barely looks ten, a little bit too young for his supposed age. He wears an identical outfit to his father, although with the fencing foil at his side that his parent has. With an almost comical bow he takes his seat.
Finally, there is Lorenna Egen. The girly seems to be a younger mirror of her mother, with that rich olive skin and the oily black hair flowing down her back, wild and loose. Leaf-green eyes stare out of her face, eyeing everything with a certain paranoia while her lips twist in a scowl. She seems quite unhappy about her presence - and yours. Still, she curtseys with almost twice her mother's grace and politely takes her place at the table.

Once everyone has been seated, servants come to pour each member of the family their desired drink and Alric was right about one thing; the cider is delicious and worthy of fame. As for the lunch itself, each of you receives a platter with a small slice of pork pie, a roll of freshly baked bread, a russet apple and a splash of mustard by the edge. A hearty meal for hearty people, prospering with the arrival of spring.

"A hunt sounds excellent, Lord Harrock - but didn't you come to discuss trade? Do you wish to change our existing agreement?"

This is unrelated to the thread, but I'm reading a biography of Robert the Bruce and this is so cool that I had to share it with someone.

>Calling for his horse, Bruce was about to leave with his followers when one of them, Roger Kirkpatrick, noticed the blood on his clothes and asked what had happened.
>"I doubt," said Bruce, "that I have slain John Comyn."
>"You doubt?" replied Kirkpatrick, "then I'll make sure," and with another knight the two ran inside the church with spears and dispatched the wounded man.

Just saying, we need another sworn sword named Rogert the Red now.

>>
>>24342107
>daughter seems a little rebelliousness
>is also a budding beauty

I think Brock would be very happy with her.

"Indeed, House Harrock would like to do more trade with your house, Lord Egen. In my mind, it is not right that only one house in this area of the Mountains has the power to control the economy of all our houses, and if we were able to better work together, it could prove quite profitable for both our houses."
>>
>>24342171

Support given.
>>
>>24342141
Sure, sure. There's lots more of great stuff from this book (Robert the Bruce - King of Scots, by Ronald McNair Scott if you're interested) if you want me to post more. It's awesome, and likely historically accurate - 90% of it is compiled from records and accounts written 15 to 100 years after it happened, which is really good for historical documents.
>>
>>24342248
Sounds pretty interesting, Kurtis, and sort of fits how we're planning on running things too.
>>
>>24342171
Although you had no real knowledge of House Egen itself, you're quite aware the trade agreements you had. It went something like this:

For every one ton of iron you provide, they offer three tons of wood and one ton of wood. In addition to this, the taxes you place upon merchants trading bringing goods to and from Crown Crag through the Westpass are halved.

Additional resources you possess are:
Large supplies of stone.
The services of your artisan mason.
The services of your military.

Additional supplies House Egen possesses:
Small supply of luxury goods - alcohol and such.
The services of their small port town, although it's nothing compared to the Belmore ports of Grimarbour and Blackford. It's at least enough to offer House Egen a mercantile edge.
The services of their military.

What changes would you like to make?
>>
>>24342314
Yeah, totally. This is from a minor skirmish the titular hero of Scotland was involved in against a rival clan:

>Quietly in the darkness, Bruce moved his men out of the camp across a deep and rushing river nearby and concealed them among the reeds of a swamp. Bidding them lie still he returned with Gilbert de la Haye to the ford by which they had crossed. The ford and the path leading up the steep bank to where they stood were so narrow that two men could not march abreast. By and by Bruce heard the baying of a hound.

>...as the moon came out of the clouds and shone brightly on the scene, he was able to discern clearly a troop of [two hundred] mounted men gathering on the far bank of the river. At this he sent back Gilbert de la Haye to bring up his men while he himself took up his position at the head of the narrow path. The men of Galloway, seeing one solitary figure on the opposite side, plunged into the river but were quickly brought into single file by the narrowness of the ford. As the first horseman came out of the swirling water he was transfixed from above by Bruce's lance, so Barbour tells us, and fell to the ground with his horse beneath him, which was instantly stabbed by Bruce and lay across the ford. As those following piled up behind the barrier, Bruce descended to the river's edge and with his long two-handed sword mowed down in sweeping circles who tried to climb over the carcass. Gradually the Macdowalls began to hold back and when Gilbert de la Haye, with Bruce's men, appeared over the brow they turned and fled into the woods.
>>
>>24342351
>For every one ton of iron you provide, they offer three tons of wood and one ton of wood

So 4 tonnes of wood?
>>
>>24342351

Could we offer a joint military expedition against the mountain tribes in return for use of their port?
>>
>>24342395
Second one is supposed to be one ton of fruit. Kept making mistakes throughout the day but I didn't spot this one fast enough.
>>
>>24342351
Perhaps military agreement? Mutual defense against the clans or somesuch.
>>
>>24342351
If we could start selling them our stone, in exchange for them allowing us to use and develop their port, so that less of our trade goes through Belmore. We also wish to enter into an alliance with them against the mountain clans, as them being defeated will allow us both to further develop and expand our lands.
>>
>>24342351
I vote that we offer the services of our artisan in exchange for the services of some of their military. Could we broker an agreement to replace their wooden palisade with larger stone walls (which we would also provide the stone for) in exchange for the use of their military in a joint expedition against the mountain men on our lands?

Something else to consider - we could offer to relax the tax on merchant for a season in exchange for giving us unlimited access to their port.
>>
>>24342412
"While this is an admirable suggestion Lord Harrock, I am unsure whether you have the political forces required to eradicate the clansman presence in Crown Crag - I am sure that you likely have issues of your own, with mountain men in your land? While I can certainly agree to an alliance against the clans, I would rather have our port remain solely dedicated to transporting the product of House Egen. Unless you're willing to pay a certain price..."

This price would be -3 to your House Fortune rolls until you're able to pay 3 Wealth to House Egen.

Do you agree to this or do you have something else to negotiate?
>>
Rolled 29

>>24342517

No, thats fine, but an Alliance against the clans is intriguing.
>>
>>24342517
"Usage of the port is not my largest concern right now. The mountain men are - so long as they plague our lands we will never be able to fulfill our potential. Join me in the destruction of the clans in your own land and we will eradicate them. That done, I would ask that you send some of your own soldiers with me to destroy the clans in my territory.

"If you are open to giving my people access to your port, I would be happy to return your favor by relaxing the tax on merchants travelling through Westpass for the remainder of the year. I will see the threat of the mountain clans ended so that our children will not have to deal with them, and your assistance in this campaign would be paramount."
>>
>>24342664
Perhaps offer stone and our artisan to help develop their defenses, and help expand their port?

I'd suggest we go with the -3 on House Fortunes (given the bonuses we have to it from our maester and mine, we can offset it), and keep the wealth.
>>
>>24342534
>>24342664
Calling in his huntsman Arin, Lord Egen happily goes through the logistics of such a thing with you. The bearded, bitter-looking retainer brings in a map. Using it, they go over the details of such an alliance.

You have to offer:
200 Trained Guardsmen.
200~ Trained Rangers.
100 Green Archers.

In exchange, House Egen has to offer:
300 Trained Militiamen, with better weapons.
200 Green Militiamen.
100 Scouts.

A raven would reliably reach the other house within half a day. It would take three hours for one House's military force to reach the other region by foot. While you're under this alliance, it would be considered discourteous for one house to refuse to assist the other in a skirmish against the mountain clans.
>>
>>24342879
I'm fine with this.
>>
>>24342879

Looks good to me, and this agreement will make Lord Egan amenable to our other purposes.
>>
>>24342664
"In exchange for this, I would allow for free use of our ports - but only for a period of six months, Lord Harrock. Our port is not the largest; it will be difficult to accommodate both of our houses' trading requirements there, unless it is...
>>24342783
"... expanded. We would happily accept this charity, if you are offering your stone and your artisan to increase the capacity of our port."

In terms of mechanics:
If you choose to allow House Egen traders to use Westpass tax-free, this will reduce rolls to see how much Wealth you have gained by 2, for the next year. However, you will not have to take the House Fortune modifier for the first six months.
If you choose to offer the free assistance of your artisan, you will gain the goodwill of House Egen and in addition to this, you will lose access to the bonus of your artisan when building new structures.
>>
>>24342905
>>24342900
Understood. The alliance is agreed upon.
>>
>>24343000
That's fine. We're not in an expansion phase right now anyway. I've got a hunch we'll get some nice treasure out of level-grinding against the clans anyway.
>>
>>24343049

Agreed.
>>
>>24343049
Anyone else have any problems with the tax-free year in exchange for no House Fortune modifier as well as the offering the stone and artisan, or are we all good to go?
>>
>>24343000
Yea, as >>24343049 said, we need to get money first, and then expand, and so our artisan might as well be doing something and helping us in our long-term plans, rather than sitting around doing nothing.

Very well then. The plans are made and written down over a pleasant lunch, where you chatter about various thing. Lord Egen seems quite happy to keep the conversation focused on himself and his family, although you're occasionally asked to divulge the little bit of information. You find out a few details about his escapades in Braavos with his wife along with his daughter's love of animals and over-active imagination, while you offer a little bit of information about the harsh realities of life up in Westpass, as well as the excellent fighting prowess of Brock and how he almost bested you in a sparring match. You 'forget' to mention his preference for pugilism.

Once the meal is over, you begin the arrangements for a hunt, for which Lord Loras Egen will call upon a group of his scouts to accompany you through the forest. They seem quite well trained and well drilled, although they're equipped for espionage and watching the wilderness rather than actually fighting, although those short swords hanging from their hips likely have some purpose.

Roll 8d6, please! Also, if there's any advice or any ulterior motives you wish to follow during the hunt please post them.

There's a vast difference between the two men, between Arin and Tenry. The former is a tracker and a huntsman while the latter is a marksman and a ranger. This shows throughout their performance as Arin finds almost every trail before Tenry sees them, skulking through the forests while your sworn sword (or bow) is forced to follow. However, his time to shine comes when the prey are spotted - your man tends to loosed his arrows before Egen's retainer even manages to nock his own. As such, Tenry gets most of the kills much to the chagrin of Tenry.

The most exceptional case of this is when the tracks of an elusive shadowcat are uncovered and followed for three miles, up to the foot of the Mountains of the Moon. There you manage to spy the slumbering beast; Arin even makes the mistake of missing it with his shot and awakening the vicious creature. However, your man Tenry manages to get the shot on the fleeing beast even as it tries to sprint away, crippling it and allowing the rest of you to gradually catch up and slay the beast. With a small smile, Lord Egen promises to have the shadowcat's hide sent to your house.

The sun is gradually lowering by the time you return to the Crown after a long hunt in the wilderness, with your man narrowly declared the victor. In the end, he was superior with the bow.

In addition to the good will from offering your artisan's aid, you gain 3 Influence for this. Is there anything else you want to do before you head back to High Harrock?

How about we have him converse with her and see if they share any common interests? Meanwhile, we need to learn of what she finds attractive so we can have Brock impress her with a feat that would impress her. We should really send our daughter/wife with us next time so they can collect information from the women of Egen.

Wait a minute. Does the girl even speak the Common Tongue? She's from Braavos, and her mom was talking to her in that language earlier.

Oh god I can just see Brock walking up to her trying to look cool and her not understanding a word he says. He'll take his dagger out as a gift for her, she freaks out and thinks he's trying to attack her, he trips on his cake and rolls down the hill and out of the gate trailing spaghetti in his wake.

We should wait until our wife is around to help with this.

Unfortunately, the poor lad doesn't have a dagger with him. You remind yourself to keep it in mind for your next visit and to bring him along with you.

Without further ado, you make your exit after a swift and courteous farewell and Lord Loras Egen bids you his farewell - after an excellent trade agreement that went much in his favour, at least as far as he believes. At the very least you've made a value ally this day.

The road back is mostly uneventful, although something does occur while the three of you trot back to High Harrock on the backs of your rounceys. A shaggy, bearded fellow steps out into the road ahead of you, wrapped in dirt-smothered hides and carrying a heavy axe in one of his hands. Three or four more men much likely emerge from the surrounding wilderness, hefting similar axes while some carry spears.

"Where you headin', lordling?"
>>
>>24343754

" Somewhere with hygiene standards. You wouldn't know it."

"Well I think I'm heading towards 'Dead Hillfolkshire' it's a beautiful little hamlet, you really should visit some time."

>>24343754

>make hand gesture to suggest to our fellows that we might have a fight on our hands.

Well, you scrape the initiative - you get to go first.

I'm increasing the complexity of the combat as we go through this quest - hopefully eventually we'll be fighting using the full ASOIAF combat rules. For now though, here's how it works:

You have one greater action or two lesser actions. Choose your actions from the following:

>Standard Attack (Lesser) - Roll to hit as listed above.
>Move (Lesser) - As you are currently riding a horse, you get to move up to eight yards.
>Dodge (Greater) - Roll 3D6+2 and replace your Combat Defence with the result.
>Cautious Attack (Lesser) - Subtract -1D6 from your attack roll and add 3 to your Combat Defence
> Charge (Greater) - Move up to 16 yards and attack, subtracting -1D6 from the attack and adding 2 to the base damage.
>Knockout (Greater) - Roll to hit against a value of 12. On a success, his Combat Defence is lowered by 5. If you succeed by 2 degrees, he's knocked out.
>Reckless Attack (Greater) - Modify your roll by +1D6 but modify Combat Defence by -5.
>Trample (Greater) - Move up to 16 yards and attack using your Animal Handling (Ride) roll. Do your horse's athletics (4) for damage per degree.
>>
>>24344068
And uh, ignore that roll there. I decided to roll the initiative in a private client instead, to prevent a needless post.
>>
>>24344068
Let's trample the one that was talking. We're more likely to kill him that way from what I can gather. If he goes down the rest will be leaderless and easier to deal with.

>>24344162
With a wail and a scream and many a crunch, the nameless mountain man dies beneath the hooves of your steed, blood soaking into the thick and heavy hides. A shame that those animal skins weren't enough to protect him.

Riding forward atop his own horse, your sworn sword and head ranger shows that he is capable with more than just a bow and charges forth, easily beheading a third savage.

And the most unorthodox of all of you, Brock swears beneath his breath and dismounts, roaring at the three remaining clansmen. His sword and shield remain in their places, holding nothing in his hands.
"Come on, you savage fucks!"
>>
>>24344273
And he's gonna fucking die.
>>
>>24344273

Though he is capable of laying the Smackdown on people too.
>>
>>24344342
Yes, and he's able to become a fucking pinhata to bow-users, that too.
>>
>>24344273
The mountain men immediately focus on the most obvious target, Brock. One with a spear and the others with axes, he faces them on bravely... and survives. It seems that the crude battle axes of the mountain clans aren't enough to pierce the combined hard leather and mail that your son is wearing, nor the blubber beneath that. The spearman manages to score a lucky blow, sinking his spearhead into the lad's shoulder and coaxing a roar from your fast bastard of a son.
>>24344305
>>24344312
Barely hearing a word you say, Brock snarls in your general direction. But he's heard enough and rips his long sword free of its hilt

Now it's your turn again and your son is surrounded, although still fighting fit. They are all collectively five or six feet away from you., although a bit too close to your son to safely trample... then again, he might just survive.

What do you do?
>>
>>24344359
Just move to the closest and cautiously attack.

>>
>>24344359
I was about to say exactly the same as >>24344381, we need to save our son and put ourselves between them and him, and we're better qualified to survive their attack.

Still, Brock is getting a fucking beating after this. I still think he might be more willing to use a weapon if we get him a warhammer.

>>
>>24344450

>>
>>24344459
Ahh, so it should be 4d6 for the cautious attack?
>>
>>24344450
Fourteen beats four by three degrees - plus one for the penalty you took. Four degrees, that's twelve damage with Ambition - and enough to score a defeat in this situation.

Cleanly slicing open the foul barbarian's jugular, you ride past and glance back at your son to see how he's handling himself, while Tenry keeps his distance through fear of accidentally hurting the heir.

With a crude grunt, your son cleanly slices through the spearman's belly and sends his innards toppling to the floor before he turns towards the axeman next. Launching his fist at the poor clansman bastard with a blood-curdling, feral scream, he lands a crushing blow, demolishing half of the savage's face with his fist alone. Blood seeps from the crater and both of the bodies collapse, dead and helpless.

The conflict is over, with your son being the only one injured. Giving you an apologetic look, Brock can't help but mutter an excuse while he nurses the bleeding wound - with the same hand stained by hillfolk blood.
"How the fuck am I supposed to fight from the back of a horse?"
>>
>>24344580

One step at the time boy, you handed yourself very well, worry about fighting on horse at another time we will see to that soon.
>>
>>24344580
"You will learn, Brock, because otherwise you will be the man on foot against the man on a horse, and you will end up like that barbarian on the road."

>points back to our first victim with our sword, his crushed body lying in a pool of blood.

"I know you want to use your strength, son, but never charge armed men without a weapon in your hand. Perhaps the sword doesn't suit your fiery temper, eh? Do you think a warhammer, like that of our good King Robert, might fit better with your anger and strength?"
>>
>>24344580
"Watch your tongue, boy. Ser Tenry, see to his wound. You should fight in the same way that I and other knights fight - with a longsword or lance. But what you should do and what you will do are two different things. I was wrong to try to push this way on you so strongly... tomorrow you will try several weapons until we find one that agrees with you, provided that your shoulder is healthy enough for it. There is a warhammer and some gauntlets in the armory that may appeal to you. You did fight well today, though far less cautiously than is best.

"I have some rope in my saddlebags. Ser Tenry, Brock - pull those bodies off of the road and by that tree. We'll hang them as a warning to other highwaymen that would haunt our roads. And then we are going home."
>>
>>24344580
"The same way I did. I'll teach you how if you're willing to learn, for now let's get going."
>>
>>24344580

The same way every knight in Westeros does. And if you keep up your weapons training you'll even live to learn.
>>
>>24344668
>"I have some rope in my saddlebags. Ser Tenry, Brock - pull those bodies off of the road and by that tree. We'll hang them as a warning to other highwaymen that would haunt our roads. And then we are going home."

I like this suggestion especially. They will learn to leave our lands themselves, or they will die.
>>
>>24344667
"I don't give a-- Anger and strength don't matter. When I win a fight, I want it to matter. I want to win through my own strength, my own skill. Not because of a horse or a sword, father."
>>24344673
>>24344691
>>24344640
"I'll try. I can say that much. I don't expect I'll enjoy it but it makes you happy, I'll try."
>>24344668
Without another word, he simply removes the rope from the saddlebag of your steed and gets to work tying up the corpses from the trees. Brock does the heavy-lifting while Ser Tenry does the knotting, with you overseeing the behaviour. After ten minutes or so, each of the corpses and dangling from the trees, beaten and battered in their own ways.

By the time you arrive at High Harrock, the sun has set and your family is glad to see you have returned, although Maester Llelewyn is irate about having another wound to tend to. Is there anything you specifically wish to tend to, beside the evening ritual of eating with your family and discussing their day?
>>
We shouldn't be so apologetic about forcing a sword on him. Regardless of his eventual weapon of choice he should be at least competent with all weapons
>>

>>24344818
I agree with this, and spend some time just chatting with her and our daughter, appear to be a caring, loving father, as stony as our personality can be sometimes.
>>
>>24344806
As far as your rangers know, there were no raids - the past few nights of stalking the Milk Snakes' grove has made them quite defensive. As such, Ser Tenry wishes for a day's rest while the rangers are given the task of passing your message on to the common folk.
>>24344818
As you confer with your wife, she slowly begins to hatch an odd sort of plan - kill two birds with one stone. Your son needs to learn how to handle beasts such as horses and you did happen to hear Lord Loras Egen speak of his daughter's love for animals. Perhaps if he comes offering a creature of some kind and showing his skill when it comes to handling the animal? That could impress the Lorenna girl.

In addition, she thinks that your generiosity towards House Egen might have been a bit too much - it will hurt the advancement of House Harrock. However, it may be worth it in the long term, with the reputation you'll be building with the Egens.
>>
>>24344924
"Deyya, dear, I realize the risk I took with Lord Egen on the trade rights. But Lord Arryn is sending a shipment of goods and valuables to help in the campaign against the mountain clans... which will not be needed now that we have House Egen's support. We will not hurt for coin nor food in the coming months."
>>
>>24344924
Just tell our wife that we'll look into it, it's a pretty interesting idea. Also does she seem in the mood of heir-making? Let's get a little flirtatious action.

Very well then.

You settle down a pleasant rest beside your wife after a long, hard day working with the neighbours. Eventually the morning comes and you wake up to the coming of the dawn and prepare for the day ahead.

Let's arrange a brief activity list of what you want to do throughout the day - it'll all be automated unless anything happens or if there's any specific scene you'd rather play out yourselves:
>Ser Morys drills the archers as he usually does.
>Ser Boros takes out the wetland rangers on patrol, scouring the river banks for any sign of hillfolk.
>Ser Tenry rests for the day, to set out with the mountain rangers during the night to harass the Milk Snakes.
>You want to spar with Brock in morning.
>You want to go riding with Brock, teach him how to handle a horse.
>You want to personally address the issues of the smallfolk and resolve their issues and petty squabbles as necessary, to forge a better connection with your people.

What else? Or what do you want to focus on?
>>
>>24345255

I'd like to see how Brock handles a horse.
>>
>>24345255
Go riding with Brock first, and then spar with him afterwards (sparring could be automated, try him with a couple of different weapons). We want to see what he thinks of the Egen girl.

We also want to deal with the smallfolk, see if they have any specific concerns.
>>
>>24345255
Include some family-time in the schedule and I'm up for it. We need to small-talk our wife to open-up and be warmer towards us, and also spend some time with our daughter.
>>
>>24345255
I have a hunch the numbers of hillfolk we'll be slaughtering are going to jump up in the near future. Can we have Ser Morys take the archers out into a field and have them practice battlefield fortifications - digging ditches, making stakes, spreading caltrops, the works. Maybe they could spar with our men-at-arms as well to learn some hand-to-hand training.

I think that Brock should start sparring with one of our household knights, too. We don't need to get the crap beaten out of us just so he can learn to use a sword better.
>>
>>24345335
Forgot muh trip
>>

>>24345382
Well, train with us in the morning, yea, but he can always do more training and sparring with the rangers and men-at-arms, so he doesn't just get used to our fighting style. Him being able to fight us because he knows how we fight, won't help him against other knights.
>>
>>24345398
Besides if our son can beat the shit out of us we sure need that training too.
>>
>>24345285
>>24345301
Brock rides as any man normally would, able to lead his rouncey at a reasonably paced trot on a crude circuit about High Harrock. However, he begins to lose control of the wily beast as soon as you up the pace to a canter or a gallop. It'll take a fair bit of practice but as the weeks pass he'll likely get the hang of it. He might even gain the courage to use the beast for combat practice, or to test his ability to joust. For now though, you focus on building up his speed and confidence when riding.

As for Lorenna and what he thinks?

"She's pretty enough. I don't know anything about her though and she didn't seem to like us there at all. Probably thought of me as a disgusting pig..." With a grunt, Brock shrugs off the thought. "Don't even know if she speaks the common tongue. Not sure I could handle a marriage to someone I couldn't understand, father. We'll need to learn more about her."

Regarding the little people, their issues seem relatively minor. Who has the rights to which plot of land, scruples regarding taxes and their relative states of poverty and crimes committed against them by their neighbours. There's even a man who needs to be sentenced to death, after he was spotted cooperating with mountain men by his neighbours - offering them refuge in his house and even taking silver from them. How do you wish to have the criminal executed?
>>
>>24345546
We'll need to spend more time with the Egens then, get everyone better-acquainted and comfortable. We need to learn more about the girl.

We'll execute the man as always. Publicly and with Ambition.

have him hanged. I see no reason we need to do this ourself
>>
>>24345615
>>24345692
>>24345702
Take off the head yourself or hang him? I'll allow you guys to reach a consensus.
>>
>>24345713

Hang him. We are not northmen.
>>
>>24345702
"That old Lord Harrock has no qualms in taking the heads of barbarians, aye... but he's not good enough to killing one of his own, even the smallfolk when they betray him. Is he so weak and craven that he cannot punish someone that breaks the law himself?"

We've set a precedent of doing it personally. We need to continue that.
>>
>>24345756

This is why I was against it in the first place, its a damned trap and we made it for ourselves.
>>
>>24345713
Head off.
>>
>>24345546
If it had been any other crime, I'd say hanging, but consorting with the barbarians makes him one of them, and for that he should lose his head.
>>
>>24345780
How is it a trap? What do you have about getting our own hands dirty?
>>
>>24345812
we are valeman not northmen
>>
>>24345838
I don't care about northmen or shit. Beheading is a common practice, now about the personal-doing is something I don't necessarily agree, but still, it can't hurt us.
>>
>>24345838

Aye, there is no need for us to do it. It will be seen as eccentric, at best.
>>
>>24345838
What's the precedent for that in the Vale? Pushing people out of the Sky door? We don't know that the common practice for executions is here, so we may as well take something already in the canon and adopt it as our own.
>>24345853
There are for more "eccentric" lords than us. This is more about honor than anything.
>>
>>24345871
He has a point in that personal executions are a northern thing, and that's known.
>>
>>24345798
>>24345794
>>24345756
Head off, then.
The head goes rolling to the sound of grim silence and you ensure that the head is placed somewhere where the savages he assisted will be able to find it.

In additional to their normal drills, your archers are trained in the art of making taps and battlefield fortifications, as well as performing some basic hand-to-hand sparring at the hands of Ser Morys. Finally, after suggesting a ride after night to your wife Deyya, she adamantly refuses - she knows that you and Brock can take care of yourselves but she refuses to endanger Katrin in this situation. As such, the only choice is a quiet evening meal with the family as per usual.

Other than these things, is there anything else that you want to do before we go on a bit of a time skip?
>>
>>24345871

Reeks of Starkfag "muh honors", but whatever. Its not that big of a deal, but it will get tiring if we insist on beheading everyone who is ever brought before us personally.
>>
>>24345891
Not anything I can think off right now.
>>
>>24345891
Nope, seems fine to me.

What does Brock think of using a warhammer? Or does he prefer the sword, when he's made to use weapons?
>>
>>24345893
I agree in the fact that personal executions are dumb, but beheading is a common execution method.
>>
>>24345930

I am against the personal part, not the beheading.
>>
>>24345891
I think a bit of a time skip is in order. Maybe fast forward until the Knight from the Eryie arrives?
>>
>>24345957
Not a bad idea.
>>
>>24345957

Go for it.
>>
>>24345942
Then I agree with you.
>>
>>24345924
You've tried him through a few weapons in your household and there was only one he really took a shine to: the flail.

Of course it's one of the most difficult weapons to master but that's something that only appeals to the boy further. Deep down, his obsession with fighting is less of an issue about anger or cruelty, it's all about mastery. It's a case of proving his prowess and he can't do that with just any old blade or even a warhammer.

No, he's got a taste for the flail instead. If there's any weapon he's like to train to use, that's it right there.
>>
>>24345853

Whats eccentric about? Lots of lords behead their criminals in the north or in the south nothing special about it. Some use executioners the only difference is that went the next idiot think about helping the hill tribes he will remember that "Lord Harrock personally takes them heads of criminals" and maybe think twice before doing it.
>>
>>24346000
That works... I think I'm getting a decent picture of his personality now.
>>
>>24346008
>South
Fuck no. Nobody takes personal executions in the south they delegate to executioners. Only in the north the one who commands a sentence has to carry out the execution of it.
>>
>>24345942

Why? It makes the commons know that we are involve and active keeping the law and punishing criminals.
>>
>>24346000

Give the boy a damn flail then.

Don't Lord Tarly and Stannis carry out their own executions/punishments?
>>
>>24346077
Yea, they do to my knowledge. I think it tends to be those who care a lot about the law and their honour that personally do executions.

I think we qualify.
>>
>>24346077

Tarly does because he's a bloodthirsty dickwad, and is not positively looked upon for it. Stannis does not. He uses executioners like everyone else, as the Law dictates. He handled Davos' punishment personally because of the nature of the crime/service.
>>
>>24346077
Stannis commanded to cut Davos fingers, but I don't think he did it himself since he delegated SO many punishments to others. And Tarly? What did he do? I seriously don't remember shit about Tarly.
>>
>>24346104
He did it himself because Davos asked him to do it, if I recall correctly.
>>
>>24346040

Yeah you are wrong, Randyll Tarly does it himself and he lives in the Reach and he worships the Seven. And while its true some Lords delegate the matter executioner some do not. Its nothing special, and definitive not a "thing" of the north.
>>
>>24346077
The only reason he was so involved with Davos' fingers is the knighting that followed.
>>
Anyway, let's move on, rather than argue over who gets to cut who's head off.

What's next, Plasma? We jumping forward a few days again?
>>
>>24346098
Yeah, you're right. My memory of Tarly is foggy but I did remember that Stannis took Davos' fingers himself. Wasn't sure about anything else.
>>24346096
>>24346104
I think in the future we should handle the personal executions less frequently, you're right, but we should still take care do show our commitment to the laws of the land when necessary.
>>
>>24346142
That seems like a fair compromise.
>>
>>24346142
Maybe something special, but not every fucking thief.
>>
>>24346159

I will accept this. I really do not want to turn the house into House South Stark.
>>
>>24346160
Which is why I suggested we only do it for mountain men and those who consort with them.
>>
>>24346175
The SS are coming.
>>
>>24346181
Not for petty mountain men, maybe a chieftain or something like that, but fuck you're not gonna pass by the sword every criminal in your lands personally.

He technically won't be able to use it properly until he receives lots of specialised training. For now, you're focusing on the mace - and the sword, you're always careful not to neglect his training when it comes to long blades. After all, he'll inherit Ambition.
>>24345957
Three days later, the knight from the Eyrie arrives. During this period, you receive a raven from White Harbour from Wyman Manderly himself - while he says that he will not be able to attend a feast of yours personally, he would be happy to send a representative of House Manderly to attend the event and improve the bonds between your houses. But enough about your relatives.

You meet the knight in the courtyard of High Harrock, a regal figure wearing half-plate complete with an armet to cover his face, visor down. A beautiful Valyrian long sword is held is sheathed by its side, its pommel a gorgeous heart-shaped ruby. His surcoat is three black ravens upon a white field, each bird clutching a heart in its talons. Removing his helmet, the handsome man bows deeply before you. Accompanying him is a short, shy squire barely nine years old holding the reins to the knight's destrier and a small troupe of heavily armoured footmen sent to guard the cart behind him..

"Lord Artys Harrock, I presue? I am Ser Lyn Corbray of House Corbray. Lord Yohn Royce sent me to ensure the arrival of his investment and also to assist in the training of your son, Brock."
>>
>>24346098
>Tarly does because he's a bloodthirsty dickwad, and is not positively looked upon for it

Now you are pulling shit out of your ass to cover your argument. Randyll Tarly is consider one of the best soldiers and generals in the seven kingdoms, even his liege lords the Tyrell give him command of their armies and the Faith trust him enough to release prisoners on his word alone.
>>
>>24345713
head off
>>
>>24346233

He IS a bloodthirsty dickwad, and there is supplementary material that shows that his fellow lords are more aware of this than you might think.

But whatever. This is a moot point now.

>>24346229

Welcome him warmly, and politely.
>>
>>24346229
Oh lord, Brock is going to hate this guy.

"It is good to meet you, Ser Corbray. I trust your journey here was uneventful? We have had trouble with the clans attacking caravans, though from what I can see a few mountain men wouldn't cause any problems for you and your men."
>>
>>24346264
This, also fall on the squire's good side treating him good too. If we fall in grace with the squire and his beloved knight tries something fishy, he might tell us.
>>
>>24346229
>a letter from Wyman Manderly himself
Fuck yeah! I was really hoping to see MANderly himself in this at some point but that's good enough an answer for me.

>Ser Lyn Corbray
Awesome. Dude's a skilled knight with honor but smart enough to know a winner when he sees one. He'll fit right in with us. I wonder who the squire is, though.

"Thank you for your service, Ser Corbray. You and your men are most welcome in High Harrock. Will you and yours join us for a meal? We should discuss things."
>>
>>24346229

OH shit, its Lyn "Murdersalot" Corbray! Tell him we are honor that the Eyrie sent us the best warrior of the Vale.
>>
>>24346293
>knight with honor

Dude, this guy kills more people in duels over petty things that he does in battle, and he kills a lot in battle.
>>
>>24346264
>supplementary material that shows that his fellow lords are more aware of this than you might think

Wait what? Can you share that please.
>>
>>24346347
Crap I was thinking of someone else. I knew that. Who the hell was I thinking about? Ser Vardis, maybe?

Either way, he sounds like a boss. Let's unleash him on the Milk Snakes.
>>
>>24346283
"We had no trouble with the hillfolk. A well-trained handful of infantrymen is all it takes to scatter the savages. Thank you for your concern however, our journey was mostly uneventful."
>>24346302
"While I appreciate the sentiment, I am hardly the best warrior that the Vale has to offer. If that was the case, then I would have like be chosen as Captain of the Guard in the place of Ser Vardis Egen, or Master-at-Arms in the place of Lord Paul Badics. Nevertheless I thank you for the compliments that you provide me with."
>>24346293
"That would be most pleasant, Lord Harrock. Please ensure that your son attends, I would like to see the squire for myself. As for Lord Royce's investment, fill free to ensure that it satisfies your needs."

The cart actually contains quite a substantial amount of wealth - who knew that Yohn Royce was such a generous fellow? Either that or you are a truly skilled swindler. You gain 3 Wealth and 1 Influence.
>>
>>24346394
3 Wealth? Oh man, we rollin' in the dough.
>>
>>24346394

Good keep the guy on his good side, I am only worry what will happen went he meets Brock.

>Lord Paul Badics
>Paul
That name feels so out of place in the setting. I'm really surprised at how immersed you get in this thing just from people's names. Still cool.

"I will make sure that Brock attends. Would you like to try him in the yard after we break bread? I feel we all would benefit from him getting the measure of your abilities."

"Don't you mean that the other way around?"

"Nope."
>>
>>24346434
Bad things. He's gonna blow it up with his big mouth, totally seeing the outcome.
>>
>>24346442
I know, right? I was half-tempted to change it to become something more setting fitting. I still might do just that - it's technically unofficial but I added the Badics in to help fill out the map and add another group of folks to interact with.
>>
>>24346457
Oh definitely, and then he'll get his arse beaten down by the knight, and then we'll see what happens.
>>
>>24346481
It's fine, really. Small Paul is in the Night's Watch so there's a precedent for it.
>>24346514
He's going to put the squire in to fight Brock and the kid will still win.

During the morning meal, Ser Lyn Corbray gets all of the time he needs to make a clear assessment of your son Brock, who doesn't dare to even glance at the knight's direction or acknowledge he exists. This doesn't stop the handsome man from offering his criticism however.

"I must confess my disappointment, Lord Harrock. I do not understand how your son could come to reach this state without a certain lack of discipline and control of his life. I will gladly do my duty however. Give me half a year and I will be able to beat the boy into shape, if the Seven are willing."

You can feel Brock seethe beside you.

Cheers for another awesome session, you're an absolute legend.

Yeah that's fine, thanks for GMing. This is awesome.

See you guys Monday!

Apathy, for the most part. Until your father died during Robert's Rebellion you had a fairly cushy and comfortable lifestyle, where you counted coin and acted as the steward of the house and the assistant of your uncle. You didn't waste much effort on family or friends. Your father's death, along with Ulrif Stone's betrayal forced a radical change in your household and pushed you to change your own way of life and that of your family.
