>>
Before we continue with the Quest:
I run this quest out of my free time and I do it because I enjoy it. I like to complain about shitty writing as much as the next anon and at the end of the day I wrote one plot twist too many. It has been planned from about mid-way, however I did not account for some plot inconsistancies.
I fucked up. I know. Lets move forward and continue with the Quest. Unless you would rather quit of course.
Possible actions before continuing:
1) None, keep going with where the Quest is headed and put it behind us.
2) Retcon to an earlier point in the story.
I prefer the first option because I’ve still more plot in store, however if my dedicated (for lack of a better word) followers don’t want that then I’ll go another direction.
>>
>>24321097
Honestly, I have to go with 2, unless you have a damn good explanation for the aforementioned inconsistencies.
>>
>>24321097

Maud makes no sense as a traitor, if you have some way of explaining why she would be acting like a traitor now I say retcon.
>>
>>24321133

unless, not if. Derp.
>>
>>24321121
Like right now, the only explanation is that everything Maud's saying right now is a lie designed to be as hurtful as possible.

Because her telling the truth has become utterly impossible.
>>
>>24321097
Sure, narritively speaking, Maud being a traitor makes no sense, so 2 might be the better choice, if we want to keep that new dimension to her character, which seems the popular opinion from last nights shitstorm.
>>
>>24321159

Best explanation I can think of is that Charles isn't just a useless lump but is actually a serious baddie and Maud aware of that.
>>
>>24321097
Eh, I'd probably stop reading if you go with 1 since Maud is (or was) my favorite character, so favor 2.
>>
>>24321097
I'd prefer the retcon, simply because I can't think of any way to play Millie anymore that isn't just crying and giving up or going down the Dark Lord route. This is just one betrayal too many and the biggest one at that.

I understand why things could have ended up like this and if you were looking for that emotional reaction to her betrayal, well it worked a little too well because I just don't see us really recovering. We're all a little lost on how to play Millie after this and I don't think it's worth it.
>>
>>24321161
Maud as a traitor would somehow work if she was somehow manipulated by somebody else

Since I'm with >>24321121 this anon.

>>24321133
Because I have to know...
> the connection between Maud and Charles...
> why Maud would betray us...
> the whole letter fiasco about Maud receiving our mail and making forgeries...
> how did Charles get into our "instance" (I'm using it in the "instanced-dungeon" context since that's how I'm interpreting it from the HP-Wiki) of the Room of Requirement...
> what's Professor Bergle involvement in all of this...

If there isn't an explanation to any of what I've mentioned above, then I'm going to have to vote to 2 and carry on.
>>
Yay! HPQuest and it hasn't even started that long ago!
>>
>>24321234
Yeah I have to agree with this.

If OP wanted to make us experience the shock, anger, and despair Millicent would feel upon seeing Maud betray us, he succeeded beyond his wildest dreams.

The problem is that the shock comes from OP going through great lengths to show how Maud couldn't possibly be the traitor.
>>
>>24321095
it was an over night ban but still bullshit.

>>24321097
1 i trust you to fix the butt hurt that is out there.
>>
>>24321249
yeah thats what I was thinking after I wrote that, that maybe someone like Trib might be involved
>>
>>24321287
Well, let it be recorded not to proclaim that you're the first, second, etc., in a thread. Otherwise you will get banned.
>>
>>24321256

You forgot
>Why she would betray us like this when she had a much better way of hurting us by tagging along with us and betraying us then.
>>
>>24321097
1, and it had better be a damn good explanation for the bullshit that's happened.
>>
>>24321097
Seems to me like everyone wants 2. I think it's mostly because you made Maud a likable character and the fans don't want to see her go.

I'm abstaining from voting.
>>
>>24321308
yeah pretty much, i emailed moot about better defining Global rule 3. Also what show are those witch gifs from?
>>
>>24321309
Yeah, that's the one thing I don't get. Everything convoluted about her plan seems to be entirely about building us up to knock us down and the perfect moment to do that we stumble upon on accident without her meaning for us to find out at all.

>>24321281
I would be less opposed to it if Millie's character development wasn't like 75% Maud's involvement. Without it we're not only a little lost but looking at that remaing 25% very suspiciously.
>>
>>24321097
2)
I had been clinging to the hope that Maud was performing a ruse to betray Charles and secure the trident for ourselves (how sweet and Slytherin would it be if she crushed Charles to protect her and Millies future?) But if that's not the case then yeah retcon.
>>
>>24321315
It's also because Maud would, again, have to be able to out-keikaku Sosuke fucking Aizen to be capable of what she says she did.

And yet apparently considering what OP said at >>24321097, OP did not account for how Maud pulled this deception up.
>>
>>24321400
>>24321309
So you completely disregard the myriad number of ways that Maud could be manipulated or controlled, without it actually being her, when we even know that someone was doing it to Harriet and presumably us, earlier?
>>
>>24321281
The hardest part of this is second guessing twenty or so posters until the end. If I give even the slightest hint to who the bad guy is you run and call the teacher and that's the end of it.

Please understand that I'm writing under pressure.
>>
>>24321416
That was my initial reaction too when I saw her there.
That said, I'm having trouble deciding, but it seems like the majority seems to be leaning towards 2.
>>
>>24321426
In case you haven't noticed, most people seem to want 1 if the situation isn't what it seems, but if it's straight up Maud betraying us 2.
>>
“So you did this whole thing out of jealousy?!” you shout, hands trembling, the sister you thought had changed to comfort you now a monster in your eyes.

But yet, your parents haven’t abandoned you, it’s been Maud all along, the home you thought you had lost isn’t.

“You don’t think I didn’t notice Dad give you his robe before we left for the train? You don’t think I haven’t noticed the years since you were born of them always caring about you over me. It was enough for me to watch you squirm for once in your closed in little life, to see that the world didn’t revolve around you. But then you let slip in the library that you were up to something, didn’t take me long to figure it out.”

She gestures to Charles who stands several inches behind her, wand raised and face no wear near as cool and reasoned as your sister.

“Charles here has been a huge help, though he is a little afraid of you now after your last little outburst”

>I trusted you, Maud! Do you realise what you’ve done to me?
>Use expelliarmus or petrificus totalus
>other
>>
>>24321121
Well, since you're voting 2, you won't ever find out if he does have a damn good explanation, will you?
>>
>>24321426
If that were the case, why would OP say things like
>I wrote one plot twist too many
>I did not account for some plot inconsistancies
>I fucked up. I know.

Is continuing to trick us part of his master plan?

>>24321473

Time to change the script.

"...Thanks to you, I know what it's like to feel as if your parents view you as a disappointment, or the whole world won't acknowledge your existence.

And if I made you feel the same way, then I am so, so sorry, if I've made you go this far just to hurt me.

Which is why I'm giving you one chance, to do what you should have done from the beginning.

Ditch the pudgy third wheel and join me.
And together we will claim the Trident as sisters.

With my raw power and your precision and technique, I'm certain that we'll be able to make it through the small army of disgruntled house elves and/or the murderous professor that almost certainly stands between us and finding that wooden chump's corpse.

Help me reach the Trident, and I'll make sure that your name comes first on the headlines."

No more talking, a familiar rages fills you from the inside, the pressure building until you can’t contain yourself anymore.
“I hate you!” you shout “Expelliarmus!”
Charles and Maud volley their spells as spells are blasted at you to little effect, you brush them out of the way and send them both hurtling onto their backs.
“My wand!” shouts Charles as his wands snaps in two.
Maud manages to keep a grip on her wand and stands again, her hair ruffled and her wand raised ready to attack.
“Stop!” shouts Nathaniel from across the forest, quickly approaching with his arms raised.
“I’ll take you all to the Trident” he says “Please”
Maud, for the time being, lowers her wand.

"I don't care about the trident, I care about them stealing my hard work, I care about my sisters betrayal, I care about finding my damn cat, and I care about denying these two their ill gotten gains,"
You keep your wand raised ready for trouble, keeping Maud and Charles in sight.
“Follow me” he says
He walks off into the forest, Maud follows first, Charles second with you in the rear.

“Any trouble and I’ll shoot fireworks into the sky” you say
“I understand” he says, looking over his shoulder, still enamored by his own body.
You continue on through the forest for several minutes before you come up to a small meadow.
“It’s there” he says, pointing to a patch of earth where no flowers have grown.
“Well?” says Maud, eagerly “What now?”
“We dig”
“Fine” Maud says, pointing her wand at the ground.
“Bombarda!”
The meadow explodes underfoot as dirt kicks up in a ploom, your ears ring from the shock. When the dirt settles you see the whole in the earth leads deeper.
A tunnel.

Rolled 100

You send Nathaniel in first followed by Charles, then Maud, and then you hop down into the tunnel with them. Maud uses her wand to illumiate the darkness, the walls feeling tight and closing in on you. You are led deeper and deeper until the walls became damp with moisture, stale air filling your lungs.
Charles whimpers to himself over his broken wand, Maud gives a sigh of exasperation and tells him to pull himself together. For a wizard to lose his wand is like having his arm taken from him.
You are led so deep inside that you can only assume that you are close, or perhaps beneath, the school lake. Something which makes your stomach tense with worry.
After what seems like a very long time you come up to a larver cavern that stretches on into the dark, the size of it unknowable.
Ahead you can see something glowing...The green hue of the Trident of Salazar Slytherin.

“There is is!” exclaims Maud “At last!”

You keep quiet and say nothing as Nathaniel gives a mechanical gulp and heads off in the direction of the Trident. Maud flicks her wand and has a ball of light follows him overhead as he walks deeper and deeper inside.
As Nathaniel makes it mid-way towards the Trident, reaching a steep incline, a torrent of what sounds like squeaky chuckles come from the darkness.

Nathaniel is being told to get the Trident for us.
We are getting light shined on the thing in the dark because its halfway between us and the Trident.
If we can get thwYrident without a fight is best but unlikely.
>>
>>24323366
What we'd really like is to get the trident and get away have charles get eaten by mysterious monsters in the darkness, our parents love us, and Maud be like Maud used to be.

Trident and Maud would be fine. Still gotta figure out whats going on there, but one thing at a time. Get Charles to grab the Trident, if he can get it and come back safely, Bombarda his mechanical ass to bits then GTFO
>>
>>24323322

I think right now our only certainty is the Trident. The only promise not yet broken is that with the trident we will succeed.

When we have the trident, we'll be wise enough to sort this out. It's our only fixed point. That goddamn trident. Let's get it, even if to use it only as a skewer for nat+maud.
>>
Rolled 22

“Who’s there?!” you shout, more squeaks and scuttling like distant thunder echoes back. You turn to Maud who’s sweating, her clinging to her face, her cool allouf facade cracking.
“Maud, use your wand to illuminate the darkness”
She takes your cue and sends another ball of light drifting across the cavern, revealing it’s spherical shape. Maud stops the ball just as dozens of little cat-like eyes reflect the light.
“Screw this” says Charles, backing away towards the exit.
Nathaniel continues his climb, his mechanical body clinking and clanking, orb inside his chest glowing a blue hue.

>Stop or let Charles leave

>Stop or let Nathaniel take the Trident

Will something that powerful accept being transfigured? I don't think so, but if we crit it might.
Otherwise I suggest increasing the internal space of our school bag permanently and storing it in there.
>>

We did all that work, and now we're making sure that we get the credit for finding the Trident, even if we don't get to keep it. At the very least we don't want Maud and Charles to get credit. As for the thing in the dark, go ahead and make a suggestion.

A beast with dozens eyes? or dozen beasts with one eye?

1) Let charles leave
2) "Can't you please (stress the please!) shine that light so we can see what's there?"
3) let nataniel go on

We need to have our wand at the ready. I expect treacher from anyone at this point, especially maud.

>>
>>24323445
Ask Maud if she brought Charles for any particular reason, if not, let him leave.

Ask Maud if she knows what those creatures are, and if not keep illuminating them when we point our wand in their direction.

Have Nathaniel just stand in front of the Trident and don't touch it yet.

I still want to solve his murder, and for all I know that artifact is cursed bad enough to double kill him.

We could probably just threaten Charles, since he's so afraid of us. After we get out with the Trident we can have a big confrontation with Maud.
>>
>>24323445
do not let Charles leave, splitting up would be bad. He's a jerk but we're not going to just let someone die

Let maud keep shining a light at them. most stuff that lives in pitch black shies away from light if it can see it, we might keep them at bay.

We probably want to get to the trident first because I've thought of something worrying. The cup of helga hufflepuff sustained you, exemplifying her virtue of perseverance. the sword of godric gryffindor allowed the brave to defend others. the diadem of rowena ravenclaw made the wearer incredibly wise. the trident of salazar slytherin the magical racist probably makes terrible, awful things happen

Whatever else happens, we probably shouldn't let anyone but a pure blood touch it and even then, treat it like we're suddenly playing dark heresy

You’re unable to see what’s in the darkness yet you know that whatever it is can’t be good. You see Charles move in your peripheral vision for the exit.
“Do you think you can outrun a hex?” you ask in a hushed voice.
Charles stops and looks over his shoulder, true fear in his eyes as he shakes his head in a defeated ‘no’.
“Nathaniel, don’t touch the Trident” you say “We don’t know what might happen”
Nathaniel stops before the Trident, silouetted as he blocks out it’s light, on your call he does as you ask.
Maud’s light ever so slightly inches her ball of light foward...

Nathaniel stands by your side, wooden features unmoving as he looks in your direction with an eyeless face.
“Concentrate on keeping that light there, we don’t want these things raining down on us”

Looking upon the Trident you can see there is something etched upon the fork.

Sure whatever.
Maybe it'll give her incentive to explain herself.
>>
>>24325238
Just seeing how she would react would give us some insight, and it's not like we'd actually have to hand it over.

Definitely not. I want to keep the Trident, and we don't want to kill Maud, no matter how angry we are.
