You are Three-Claw, a young, unblooded Yautja suckling of the Cloud Viper clan. You have been mentored by the great hunter-warrior Jackal-of-the-Carrion in the ways of the hunt. He has six students, and you are the first.

Your trial of of the hunt is nearing. You must pass this trial to attain the full rank of Clan Hunter or die trying.

You take this moment to reflect on what you have learned as a hunter.

What have you focused on in your training?

A. Agility - Your fast reflexes allow you to dodge and weave in combat, and you can jump faster and further than any in your class.
B. Strength - You can break a thick Woo'mi Iron-Tree in two with your bare arms.
C. Cunning - You have devoted much time to the art of concealment and ambush.

>> In the interests of getting this rolling, we'll go with C.

You again recount the time when you tracked a pack of Locust-Wolves from cave to cave until you trapped them all in a masterful ambush.

You glance at your wrist computer and note the time. You have little time left. It is time to decide on who you would like to sponsor your ascension trials. Do you:

A. Ask your mentor - who has given you the gift of skill
B. Ask your mother - who has given you the gift of life
C. Ask your clan's Matriarch - who has given you the gift of purpose
?
>>
>>24310462

A is worthless when being swarmed by xenomorphs, and overkill against humans.
C is pointless against xenomorphs and when you have stealth for humans.

>>Ask your Mentor

You kneel in respect before your mentor, Jackal-of-the-Carrion. Many scars mark the great hunter-warrior. Though it has been many sun-moons since he played his part in the legend-annuls of you clan, he remains as imposing a figure as ever. He bids you to stand.

"Rise, youngling. You are the first and most promising of my strudents. It would be my honor to sponsor your trial. Come. Let us go to the arena."

You thank him, and the two of you make way to the battle arena. The arena itself is composed of a large forest many days walk in diameter. It has served as a place of trials for your clan since long before your birth.

You are greeted there by dozens of the clan's greatest hunters and warriors. They salute you and bid you as one of their own.

Your mentor instructs you to choose your weapons. He takes a small array of weapons from a nearby rack and offers them to you.

"This is a trial of cunning, strength, and speed, not technology. Choose only from the blade or spear."

Do you choose:

A. The light wrist-blades - a pair of standard but well honed blades attached to the back of your hand

B. The Combi-stick - a long, light telescopic spear with sharp blades on either end.

C. The Melee Disc - a thick disc without the flight and tracking systems of the Reflex Disc, but can nonetheless be thrown or used in melee.

He nods. "I expected as much." You reverently take the weapon from his hands.

You depress the switch to extend it to its full length. It feels light, and response instantly to your touch. It is an excellent weapon.

Your mentor gives a throaty click. "It is an excellent weapon. I should know, for it never left my side during my more youthful days. It is a loan. I expect it back."

You retract the spear and clip it to your back harness.

"What will I face in there?" you ask.

"The Black Prey. The one-with-two-jaws. I cannot tell you how many there are, for that is part of your trial. But you must emerge on the other side of this forest with at least one trophy to complete the test."

You thank him. It is time. You are ready.

The clan hunters begin to leave one by one. Your mentor bids you good hunting, and follows them.

You are now alone.

There are many hours left of daylight. The trees around you are thick and tall.

What is your first move:

A. Proceed deeper into the forest.
B. Find a tall tree and climb to the top for a survey.
C. Scout around the immediate area for clues of your prey.

You spot the tallest iron-tree near you and begin to climb. The tree is tall, and you take a whole hour to climb to its apex. You welcome the exercise.

You take out your spear and jam it into the tree's crown, and use it to stabilize yourself as you survey the entire forest.

You came from the south.

To the North is a small cliff leading to a river.

To the East lies denser foliage, and your raw sight cannot penetrate its thick canopy.

To the West lies a rocky outcropping, with many caves.

You know that the black-prey is most comfortable in caves, but the river and dense forest may provide an easier defense for you should they attack.

Which way should you head?

You decide to head North.

Along the way, you keep a constant look-out for signs of the prey. You look for ichor, prints, and signs of acid corrosion. Unfortunately, you find no such signs.

You come upon the edge of a tall and vertical cliff overlooking a wide and rapidly flowing river below. Beyond the river lies more forest.

Descending the nearly vertical cliff would be difficult without gear, and the cliff side seems too hard for you to use your combi-stick as leverage.

Suddenly, thanks to your keen and cunning sight, you catch a glimpse of movement in the forest below. It was a dark, slithering figure. It's one of your prey! You're sure of it!

Do you:

A. Spend more time scanning the forest to see if you can catch it again.
B. Attempt to descend along the cliff.
C. See if you can find an easier way around the cliff to to go below.

You quickly scoot over to a better vantage point and meticulously scan the forest below.

There! Movement, again! One, no, two... no.. THREE black figures disappearing in and out of the thick foliage. They seem to be chasing something. Local wildlife, perhaps.

One glance at the horizon reminds you the daylight is waning. You have perhaps one more hour until nightfall. Now that you realize there are more than one of the black-prey down there, you are hesitant to engage them in the darkness. They can see perfectly well in the darkness while you are without your mask.

Thinking it's better to engage them in daylight, you make plans to camp. You immediately spot two promising places to spend the night.

The first is on top of a wide and stout Laathe Tree to your right. It offers excellent concealment and allows you good vision of the cliff side but not of the forest below.

The second is a rocky crevice cut into the top of the cliff. You will be able to see the entirety of the forest and river from there, but not of the top of the cliff.

You recall your mentor's survival lectures and get to work. You peel sinews from silk-grass and one strand to a Screech-Beetle's thorax and a second strand to its abdomen. You then tie the other two ends around low branches and bushes.

Such a device makes for an effective trip-wire. When tripped, the beetle is forcefully pulled in two, resulting in a loud screech. You place a few such wires around the immediate area, covering the major approaches.

Night has fallen.

You make your way back to tree and carefully cover yourself with its leaves for concealment. You are now ready to wait out the night.

You enter into a hunter's trance, and close your eyes.
The night passes uneventfully. Your wards were not triggered. You are well rested and it is now morning. It's time to tackle the cliff.

Suddenly, you hear rustling to your right and behind you. Your keen eyes pick out black movement from your right. At the same time, a faint screech sounds in the distance. There are at least two of the beasts closing in on your position!

You estimate to have about 10 minutes before they reach you.

You decide the hunt has gone on long enough.

You will make your stand here and take on what comes your way. You head toward a grassy mound and climb to the top. You reach for your spear and hold it firmly in your hand. You can hear them close in.

Suddenly, the foliage before you parts violently and a large, brown figure barrels through the branches. It's not the black prey at all but a barking-cougar - a big, brown, ferocious predator indigenous to these forests.

It runs past your mound frantically, but is suddenly overtaken by another beast - the black prey!

The black prey pounces upon the cougar and brings it down in a howl. Several slashes of its claws later, and the cougar lays dead. The black prey begins to feast upon its brains. It has not noticed you yet and it's alone.

This is the perfect time to strike!

Do you:

A. Charge towards it and drive your spear into its body.

Not everything is what it seems, and not every strand is compatible. It could be that its trying to consume biomass to become a queen... It could also be operating on pure instinct... which is indicative of the absence of a queen/ absence of an overmind.
>>
>>24313028
In the absence of a queen it isn't uncommon for them to go a bit feral. Hell, even when there IS a queen they don't always refrain from straight-up murdering otherwise suitable hosts.
>>
>>24313015
>>B. Try to quietly sneak up behind it while it's feeding and decapitate it with a clean strike.

You emerge from the grassy mound and with trained skill and care, slowly and carefully make your way towards your prey.

Fifteen paces. You can hear its tongue slurping.

Ten paces. It still has not noticed you. Its tail swishes idly from side to side. It's a small drone, you realize; smaller than the ones you've seen in most holo-vids.

Five. Four. Three paces. It twitches its head, perhaps realizing something is wrong.

You quickly bound forward and execute a forceful swing. The beast, perhaps hearing your swing, snaps its head. Too late.

The spear cleanly cuts through the beast's head and shears it in half. The prey staggers, whips its tail frantically in its death throes, and finally falls down dead. Acid from its wound hisses as it pools in the ground.

You have won.

It almost seemed easy.

You swiftly chop off the tip of its tail and mark your forehead. The pain is immense, but you relish it greatly, for you have won the trial!

Still, you think, as you look over your trophy, at how much smaller than the full sized drones you saw in the holo-archives.

You decide to leave before more come.

But now you have a decision to make.

Do you:

A. Make for the far side of the forest to the exit

or

B. Continue to the forest below to hunt for more trophies to impress your elders?

You decide to press on to see if you can bring home a larger trophy. After all, you are your mentor's first student, and it would reflect badly upon him if you return with such a meager trophy.

You make your way to the mud slope and half-climb half-slide down to the river below. The river is shallower than you expected, and you easily ford your way across.

On the other side, you see a young Yautja corpse leaning against a tree. He has been dead for some time now, and a hole in his chest marks the fatal wound.

It is a grim reminder for the fate of those who fail the trial. You notice he is wearing a pair of wrist blades. You could take them, and as far as you know it would not be breaking any rules of the trial, but it would be impolite to the dead warrior.

Do you:

You give a gesture of respect for the deceased warrior and move on.

You make your way to the forest and immediately pick up several signs of the black-prey. You find traces of ichor and the unmistakable footprints in the impressionable muddy ground. You also find another dead and partially eaten barking-cougar corpse with distinct claw wounds.

You glance around, and examine the prints. They seem to lead deeper into the forest, and you notice at least three distinct sets of them.

They also seem to double back on each other, leading you to believe they come here often.

You decide to fight on favorable ground and prepare an ambush. With no way of knowing when they will come back, you'll need to act quickly.

You fashion some crude spear traps from cougar bones and elastic sapling vines. When the trigger wire breaks, the vines will snap forward with great force and drive the sharpened bone straight into the flanks of whatever triggered it.

You manage to lay 4 of these around the perimeter before a rustling in the foliage alerts you to their presence. They seem to be coming.

You once again grip your spear in your hand and prepare yourself for combat. You howl into the air detect a surge of activity within the forest.

A black drone breaks through the foliage and dashes towards you. This one is large - much larger than the runner you encountered before. It charges towards you head-on.

Instinct takes over and you maneuver yourself to receive the charge - from behind an invisible spike trap.

The black beast pounces towards you, but is swatted out of the air by a side-winding bone spear. The thick and sharpened bone smashes the beast's belly and shatters upon its exoskeleton, dazing it.

It comes crashing into the ground and begins to hiss and thrash. But before it can stand to take a combat stance, you jam your spear into its neck. But this one is strong, and quite tougher than the last.

It rolls deftly, and even with the spear still jammed into its neck, it refuses to go down without a fight.

You bring the spear up in a back-swing, which releases another hiss from the prey, and leap back.

Acid splutters from the beast's neck. It's clearly wounded.

You press the advantage and again drive the spear into its neck. This time, however, you twist hard and manage to lop its head clean off.

It sputters, thrashes, and dies.

The foliage parts again and a second and third drone emerges. They stare at you and the carnage, hisses menacingly, and slowly backs off.

You are now victorious!

You look down and marvel at your prey. It is certainly larger than the previous one.

Now, you should decide on what to take as a trophy.

A: Take its head
or
B. Take its tail.

Naah the tail is clearly from a smaller drone.
>>
>>24313750
You take the (quite massive) head and buckle it to your trophy belt, along with the tail from your previous encounter.

Suddenly, you hear a rush of movement to your right. Three, maybe more, black beasts are bearing down on your position. They have brought friends.

You need to think fast.

Do you:

A: Run north, and head for the exit
B. Run west, and lead them through your traps
C. Run a distance and try to hide atop a tree

Take the head as a trophy. Fashion the tail into a spear.

If at all possible, I want us to fashion some decent armor out of the Hard-meat later.

Also, if it has the back spines, take those as well.

The claws from the dead warrior: at the very least we should take them and return them to our sensai. If just to give the weapon an honorable chance to be used, rather than remain on an unblooded piece of pigu

You begin to run west, weaving deftly between the trees. You intentionally weave between trees where you have set your traps, and hope they follow. You hear a sharp snap and then a screech close behind you.

You take a moment to look, and see one of the beasts thrashing on the ground. But suddenly you catch a sharp movement from atop a tree to your left as a black figure leaps down upon you.

>>

The idea of doing it at the last second is that if we jump out of the way immediately, it'll be able to brace itself for its landing. If we do it at the last second it won't have time to adjust and ram into the tree head-first rather than just landing and making another jump.

At least, thats how I see this playing out. I may be mistaken.
>>
>>24313898
honestly I dont care if its braced for landing or not, if its distracted by the tree, then we can kill it. If it hits itself on the tree. we can kill it. If it gets up close and personal, where it is neither distracted by the tree, nor dazed, with our back to said tree... We die.

therefore, safe, and smart.
>>
>>24313878
C. Try to side-step at the last moment and let it hit the tree behind you

You seemingly brace yourself, ready to take the impact, but a second before the impact you leap to your right.

The beast hissed and screeched as it missed you and smashed full force into the tree behind you. At the last second, however, as it wildly clawed the air, it managed to make contact with your left shoulder and left a long gash.

Your fluorescent blood sprays into the air and you are overcome by a sharp pain. You howl in anger.

The alien beast, your blood still on its claws, has clearly broken its neck, and is thrashing vigorously.

Do you:

A. Finish it with your spear
B. Continue running before its friends come.

Just run, it broke it's neck, it'll die on its own.

Discretion is the better part of valor here.

if its braced for its landing it won't be distracted OR dazed. These don't really care how the surface they're standing on is oriented, so if it knows its going to land on the tree rather than land on us, it'll just use the tree as a spring-board and we're right back to square one.

Without a second thought, you turn and run. Its friend, who was caught on the trap, has now recovered and resumes chase.

You see three more of the weaker runner drones to your right. You glance at your injured shoulder. The gash is deep, but it's just a flesh wound. You'll need to find a way to stop the bleeding at some point.

In between bounding between the trees, you glance up and take your bearing from the setting sun. You are heading north, and should be less than a day's travel from the forest exit.

They are gaining on you quickly. You are sure to lose this race unless you act soon. Worse - you notice a wide and deep chasm looming before you. You stop short of the edge, and now must make a decision.

You continue hacking away at the tree. You can feel it giving way.

Suddenly, the large warrior drone you encountered earlier leaps to the top of the very same tree you're chopping down. The entire trunk shakes to the added weight, and suddenly topples forward.

You dash out of the way as the tree tips and falls across the chasm, bridging it.

You quickly grab your spear and run along the makeshift bridge. Suddenly, from the other side, the warrior drone emerges from the fallen treetop and blocks your way.

Behind you, three runner drones close in on you single file. You feel the tree beneath your feet shake and tremble - it's not a very thick tree and likely to snap under too much weight.

Do you:

A. Charge the drone and try to get to the other side
B. Remain where you are and adopt a defensive stance.

You free your spear from the dead runner and prepare for a second thrust.

Suddenly, you hear a loud screech behind you. You sidestep to see the warrior drone leap into the air towards you.

Remember that we're in a controlled hunting ground, maintained specifically for use in these trials. If they had developed a Queen, there would be tell-tale signs (increased food requirements, and thus a spike in the amount of prey they hunt, among other things). Suddenly, you feel the wood beneath you sink. With all your strength, you leap forward with both your arms extended.

You make contact with the chasm's edge! Your injured shoulder flashes red hot in pain, but you hold on.

You glance behind you, and see the tree, along with all three beasts, fall into the fissure below.

Slowly, you pull yourself up.

You've made it.

We are the patient hunter.
It wants us. It won't resist forever.

>A. Continue to play the wounded hunter and see if it can come closer.

You remain in the current posture and wait patiently. After some time, you sense the beast pacing forward. You hear a sharp and sudden screech, you feel a slight tremble in the ground, and you know the beast has made its move.

You deftly roll out of the way, ignoring the sharp pain in your shoulder and back, and smash the spear into the Xin'gin plant. The air explodes around you as the spores detonate. You are prepared for this, and shield your eyes.

The beast, however, was not. It screeches in surprise is left stunned at the sudden sensory explosion. It whips its tail in all directions and claws the air trying to find you through the spore mist.

Now is your chance! You take your spear and...

A: Go for the lethal blow. Swipe at its neck and decapitate it!
B: Ram the spear into the beast's chest.
C. Cut off the beast's flailing tail and try to disarm it.

Can't risk another wound so close to the end

Its wounded and disoriented, but with so many flailing pointy bitz closing for the kill will be problematic, and one wrong move could cripple us.

You lift the combi-stick in a sharp upward movement and slices its tail off. The beast shrieks and leaps in your direction, but in its current state, you easily dodge out of the way and with another back swing, slices off one of its arms.

You spin, turn, and again whip your staff through the air and both of the beast's legs fall away from its body.

The resulting mess tumbles to the floor writhing in pain.

You bring the spear down upon it, and severs its head.

The deed is done. You feel relieved. Now for your trophy.

Do you take;

A. The Head
B. The Tail

Tail. Any more weight and we'll be over encumbered.

A second head might encumber us too much. Plus, we've already got a Drone head, we don't have a Drone tail.

2 A 2 Bs. Gimme a tiebreaker.

B

Nice beefy drone tail might make a nice dagger or spearhead to commemorate our first bug hunt.

>>B. The Tail

You pick up the tail from ground and attach it to your trophy belt. You quickly make your way towards the exit and keenly listen for signs of additional beasts. Nothing.

You reach the forest exit as dawn breaks, and find your mentor already waiting for you, along with many of the clan's elders. He clicks, and gestures to you in respect. "I see you have done well. Three trophies. That matches the results of my trial so many sun-moons ago, but then again," he notes your wounds, "I came out looking much better."

He and the rest of the clan elders guide you to a clearing, where a young hunter is waiting with a medical kit. As he tends to your wounds, your mentor takes the trophies from your belt.

"Excellent work, my student. Sleep well tonight, for tomorrow, I shall give you your dreadlocks, and make you a hunter!"

You feel a sudden elation. It is done then, your trials are finished. It certainly wasn't easy, but you did it. You have made your clan proud.
