You are Princess Lydia Tannhäuser Von Cygnus Gates the third duchess of Tannhäuser and executive director of the Royal Rocketry Corps of Midland. While you were holding a tournament to decide the first Knight to enter space, some east island natives decided to crash the party. They had seen your last launch and believe you are a figure from one of there legends, a princess who must return to the moon to redeem humankind. (Oddly enough you seem to remember your mother telling you a similar story once)

In light of these events, you have agreed to allow there leader, Prince Orion, to join the Tournament in Sir Perro's stead. Sir Perro resuming his normal duties as Lord Protector.

Prince Orion must, of course retake the first physical contest; it is only fair to the other contestants.

His lack of piloting and engineering experience, however, will have to be taken into consideration.
>>
Once Prince Orion has proven his ability to swim with the Void Armor, we shall proceed to the next trial.

Prince Orion has a little difficulty with the void armor, having never worn anything so heavy, and being slightly shorter than Sir Perro, who's suit he is borrowing. However once in the water, he manages to cross the lagoon fairly well. His time isn't quite as good as palmers, but you imagine the suit got in the way a bit.

During the swim the Islanders and the Champions awquardly stare at each other, each not quite sure how to react to the other. But once the prince climbs out of the water he grins, considering the "Challenge" to be a bit of a joke. "What is the te next challenge princess?"

I demand a Harker/Orion tag team. We probably won't get to the moon but damned if it won't be the manliest thing to ever occur in human history either way.

In seriousness he's not a great candidate. His main recommending feature seems to be his ability to not pass out ever.

"Your physical capabilities are well within the requirements, Prince Orion, however the challenges of rocketry, orbital calculations, and re-entry shall prove to be more difficult.

We shall next test their piloting ability, with a mockup of the capsule's controls, which they will be made to manipulate while within their Void Armor.

The contestants each take a turn in the Centrifuge, pressing buttons while being subject to stronger and stronger G-Forces. If they make a mistake, the G-Forces increase, if they let go of the Deadman switch, the spinning stops and they fail the test.

Dunham is the first to pass out after only a few moments, not a good start.
>Fail
Surprisingly however, Curtrys does not repeat his performance in the lagoon and somehow manages to pull through. Finishing the puzzle in record time!
>Pass!
Lytton's pride gets the better of her and she makes an early mistake, but she makes up for it with sheer perseverance and is able to recover.
>Pass!
Waleys makes some mistakes of his own, and things look bad, but he never lets go of the deadman switch. At first things look bad and Minerva considers overriding the centrifuge, but just as you thought he was done for, he finishes the puzzle after withstanding more G-Forces than thought possible!
>Pass and a new world record!
Saddler passes as well, and says he's been under worse pressure before.
>Pass
Gerard also is dismissive of the G-Forces, saying that it was just like a dogfight, only nobody was shooting at him, and thus dull.
>Pass
Cobham doesn't gloat, but does just as well as anybody else. Demonstrating calm under pressure.
>Pass
Hawtrey seems to forget what he came here for and just rides the G-Forces before passing out with a crazed expression on his face.
>Fail
Sir Harker seems to be having some difficulty at first, but pulls through in the end, is he trying to throw the tournament?
>Pass
And lastly, the eastern prince. He had spent the entire time studying the puzzle and asking The Professora questions, and when it's finally his turn, he manages to pull through amazingly considering a total lack of prior knowledge.
>Pass

The champions all display differing levels of dizziness after this test.

Dunham and Hawtrey have both passed out and will need rest. Harker, Lyton, and Waleys are all visibly disoriented, (You suspect Harker may be faking it) and have had there Stamina reduced temporarily to 0. Palmer is also showing some signs of fatigue, but seems to be made of stronger stuff and has had her stamina reduced temporarily to 1. Everyone else is recovering quickly and is down one stamina.
>>
>>24290112
We shall allow the contestants a small amount of time to recover, as we must prepare the Comets for micro-gravity trials.
Do Minerva and Smith have Engineering tests prepared for the contestants?

One of these days Harker, one of these days. TO THE MOON.

Ok, enough references nobody else will get I need to sleep. Probably won't be around tomorrow either due to early meetings. For the rest of today I say observe how the pilots mix socially in recovery and then once they're back to 100% test them in something else. Maybe mechanical repair in a low oxygen environment? Make them wear the suits and cut their oxygen supply to half then do complex manual dexterity tasks.
>>
>>24290256
Engineering tests are prepared in the backs of the three comets. The Navy and Air Force have donated fresh pilots to fly in the arcs as instructed by Sir Harker, and the contestants are split into three groups. Each having to put together a puzzle in microgravity. They can only assemble the puzzle during freefall and have to put it down during the gravity parts. Whichever team puts it together the fastest wins.

The three are,

Sir, Geoffrey Curteys
>Humble civil servant, Stamina 1, Piloting 0, Engineering 1
Dame, Anne Lytton

Palmer 1 (For winning the swimming contest)
Cobham 1 (For winning the team contest)
Orion 1 (For winning the team contest)
Harker 1 (For winning the team contest)

A timed test. Professora Minerva and Colonel Smith and the computers to create a mock-up of two capsules in orbit which must dock together.
The contestants must make the necessary calculations, as if they are within capsule themselves, and declare the necessary course adjustments.

This trial will take place over the course of an entire day, during which the contestants must time themselves and declare the proper course corrections to make the rendezvous within 2 orbits.

The computers would need a lot more time and preparation to pull that off. It's an idea, but probably not feasible right here. You simply lack the manpower.
>>
>>24291831
Then perhaps a modified and less ambitious version could be put together by Minerva and Smith?
>>
>>24291876
Your scientists still aren't quite sure on how an orbital rendezvous would work at this point. More data is needed which will not be available until you get some manned missions up there.
>>
>>24291797
>>24291831

I'd argue we don't know how the theory will match the reality either...

We have a good idea of physical, mental and emotional preparation, I think.
As the final thing, we should get each candidate in a room with us and noone else, and tell them that they have flunked out. And see how they react. Yes, it's evil.
>>
>>24291907
If we do so, we will need to prepare a room for each candidate as they leave, so that they cannot interact with other candidates.

How will we grade them on this? We require something decisive and incontrovertible to decide who shall be the first man into space.
>>
>>24291959

I don't think keeping all these candidates is doable, five or seven are plenty...
>>
>>24291907
What's going to convince them that this isn't another test though? We are sure the ones who are winning aren't going to believe it for a moment.
>>
>>24291992
No, the candidates must be kept isolated so that they cannot influence the others.
>>
So what exactly are you suggesting?
>>
>>24292173

I'd posit that the testing is mostly done! What comes next is training.
>>
>>24292173
We suggest that the next challenge be one of mathematics and piloting.
Given the current Manned Capsule specs, they must calculate a de-orbit burn, angle of re-entry, and when to deploy their parachutes.
>>
>>24292203
But we must still choose the victors of this competition before we can begin training.
Where are the posters who clamored for a tournament? This will have been a fiasco if we cannot provide a definitive winner of this contest.

Awarding points for the mathematical test might resolve this deadlock.

that would leave us with Sir Harker and Dame Cobham as the winners, which would suit us fine. 2 Fantastic individuals succeeding to become the worlds first void knights. Of course both are from the air force. oh well the runner ups can decide to stay on for follow up training to become the next void knights.

We shall award a single point from the Mathematics test.
Sir Waleys shall be awarded a single point of Valor for setting a new world record of G-forces endured in the Centrifuge test.

The finalists are then Cobham and Harker.

We must determine a fitting final challenge to see who shall be the first human in space.
Perhaps...an aerial duel.

Duel sounds good!

I'd like someone to give Prince Orion a crash course in Anglish and mathematics. There's something to the islanders.

Did Maia's map end up making any sense?
>>
>>24292627
Maia hasn't let anybody look at her map. And she doesn't seem to speak Anglish at all.

>>24292608
Sir Harker looks at his score and does a double take when he sees that he is tied with Cobham. You aren't sure you could ever say you've seen him regret anything or express fear, but this is pretty damn close. He must have been expecting to come in second, not tie, and not with Cobham.
Cobham is absolutely thrilled with the idea of the Duel...

Okay, it's late, and this is a good cliffhanger. See you tomorrow, I might be a bit late because of Astronomy class, but it won't be too much later than normal.

What about sir Christopher Grenefeld? He's a cool dude, why isn't he on the list?
>>
>>24292973
Ooops, he passed too! That puts him in the 3 point tier. Thanks for the correction!
>>
>>24293017
Oh, and Elizabeth Palmer isn't listed there too. ...Do we have a third finalist?
>>
>>24293205
>Elizabeth Palmer isn't listed there too
Yes she is.
She's in the 3-point tier with Prince Orion, since she did not pass the Mathematics test.
>>
>>24295363
No she isn't. I'm talking about >>24289988, the centrifuge test.
>>
>>24295456
Palmer's score of 2 here >>24291315
is correct, and shows that she passed the Centrifuge test.
That scoreboard is after the Swimming, Centrifuge, and Micro-G Engineering tests.
Palmer passed the Swimming and Centrifuge tests, but failed the Micro-G Engineering test.
Prince Orion has 3 points, since he passed all three tests.
She then passes the Astrology test, increasing her score to 3, but then fails the Mathematics test, for a final score of 3.
>>
>>24295880
Palmer's score of 2 in >>24291315 actually shows that she won the swimming contest and endured the microgravity contest (>>24291233) and says nothing about the centrifuge test. Cobham and Orion seem to have this extra point for endurance in >>24291315 as well.
>>
>>24295961
But >>24291233 was not confirmed, and the reward of that extra point to Orion and Cobham did not occur.
>>24291315 shows Cobham and Orion leading with 3 points, which reflects their 3 victories in the Swimming, Centrifuge, and Micro-G tests. No additional point was awarded for simply enduring the Micro-G test.
>>
>>24296346
Hmmm. I assumed that since everyone completed the swimming contest, the point was awarded only to the winner. Otherwise, lots of people would have 2 points instead of one.
>>
>>24296746
Well, mostly everyone. Except for sir Curteys, who needed the help from Waleys to make it to the pier.
