It's not a question of failure, I realize as I step directly into the line of fire. Rider will be hurt if I fail, therefore I will not fail.

I can see Gilgamesh smile, and hear Rider's confused cursing behind me.

The first six blades can be countered with projections, and I do so. It's hasty and sloppy, but it serves the purpose.

The seventh I can't cast anything fast enough for, so I enhance my perceptions and reflexes; when it's within reach I reach out with the back of my hand and slap the flat part of the sword away with a sharp clang.

I can't copy the rest fast enough, so I summon my twin swords to hand and set myself to deflect as many as I can. I manage to stop three of them before the shield appears, and I snap out of my extreme focus. When I see Gilgamesh's outraged stare at something behind me, I turn. When I see him, I understand.

"This wasn't the agreement." Archer states calmly.

"Your agreement was with Avenger."

"And he told me that you would support the choice."

"The hell is your problem?" Gilgamesh returns, calmed slightly but still clearly angry. "You're the one who really wants him dead!"

"If anyone but me kills him, his death is meaningless for my purposes." Archer shrugs as he steps in front of us. "If my greater goal can't be accomplished, I'll be forced to return to my secondary ones. Namely the destruction of people like yourself and Avenger."

"... Are you threatening me?" Gilgamesh asks, more surprised than angered. "I could very easily destroy any two servants I wish. More if I bothered trying."

"Any normal servants, certainly. I'm hardly a normal servant. Or did you not notice how Avenger practically begged me not to destroy the two of you that night at the ruins of the Matou house?" Gilgamesh opens his mouth to retort as Archer continues. "Besides, you wouldn't be fighting only me in this circumstance. Could you handle two fakers and a Goddess all at once?"

Gilgamesh looks between the three of us and sighs. "It seems Avenger would rather let you destroy yourselves than have me do it. I suppose I'll have to find some other way to amuse myself tonight." He turns and begins to walk away, fishing some sort of music player out of his pocket as he walks.

Rider glares at Archer as he turns back towards us. "Heel, woman. If I was planning to kill either of you, I wouldn't have declared my presence first."

"....You know who I am?"

"I know everything." Archer responds with his same smug demeanor. Even knowing it's an act I want to punch him in the face. "Besides, if I were to attack you, I risk drawing the attention of your household. I don't doubt someone's going to be coming soon anyway."

"So you're just going to leave?"

"For tonight? Yes." He turns and begins to walk away. He stops. "By the way, do either of you know who 'Malak' is?"

".... Berserker called me that."

He turns to look at us. "He called me by name, but he calls you Malak?" He shakes his head. "He wanted me to pass along a message. 'Do not be so angry, what happened wasn't your fault'."

"Berserker's alive? And what does that even mean? Not to blame myself for what happened to him?"

"He said 'no' to that, when he said you'd ask. As for what he meant, he never told me. He said it was too late." He shrugs, disinterested. "As for alive.... he said we wouldn't meet again. Given his state, he's probably faded by now, since he was barely coherent at the time."

"Wait, even knowing how things stand between us, you'd risk your life to deliver a message?" Rider asks, confused.

"Man's last request is a thing to heed. No matter the circumstances around it." Archer quickly vanishes from sight as he says the words, leaving me alone with Rider in the street. She looks at me, and I look towards home.

"Yep." I hear Rider answer behind me as I exit the room.

I enter my room and walk to the closet, discarding the ruined shirt and tossing my coat to the floor as I reach for a clean one. There's a knock at the door. "I'm naked." The door swings open, Rider strolling into my room ahead of a surprised Saber and Rin. "And you just walk in?"

"You were lying, and it's not like I could catch a peep. Get mad at them." Rider answers easily gesturing to the other two.

"Shirou, you were injured?"

"Very lightly." I respond, slipping on a clean shirt, while Rin picks up the discarded one.

"Lightly." She responds, pointing at the bloody slash. She then hesitates. "Wait, this looks exactly like the one you're wearing. You have two of the same shirt?"

"Kinda?" I respond, looking between it and the one I'm wearing. Rin leans past me to look at my closet.

"... Everything you own is just copies of the same outfit?" She asks surprised, looking at me.

"Not true. I have the school uniforms." I respond, pointing to another part of my closet. "Besides, did you think I was just wearing the same clothes day after day?"

"So what of Lancer?" Saber asks.

"Apparently I have a meeting at Lunch tomorrow to speak things over with his Master." I answer. "Hopefully she'll be reasonable. I suspect she will be, since Lancer was acting as her Agent and we were able to cooperate fine."

"So what's our next course of action?" Rider asks from across the table.

Have you read/watched the Familiar of Zero source material?
I initially had some trouble getting into HoS, until I realised that every single thing I found a problem with was actually him staying true to the source material, and every time stuff gets awesome is him bending the story to fit Shirou instead of Saito.

I read the novels up to vol 12. There is a canon continuety of HoS. Not as a written story but GB liked the idea of a forum member. Shirou gets excominicated by the pope and he fucks halkegnias shit up with loiuse with the help of germania and tristania. He dies while trying to save some people against popes army or something.

I second the motion, off hand I can think of two times that we've been confused on the time and almost made decisions that wouldn't make sense. (Going to the church for to swap information with Caster 12 hours early and offering Taiga dinner two or so hours after lunch. Both happened on the same in-game day.)

Just skimmed the threads since the beginning of the "vampire incident" and, amazingly, you seem to be correct.

We rescued Sacchin before lunch, had lunch and talked about emotional stuff, went shopping and talked with Avenger, realized OH SHIT TAIGA, ran off to save her, and got back in time to go for a walk, had a nice chat with Lancer, and heroically saved Rider from the dastardly Gilgamesh, all before dinner.

It has been a FUCKING BUSY DAY.
