Since the dawn of time, the peoples of the world have had their legends. Be they the titanic figures who forged the great nations, founded the eternal cities, and codified the very beliefs that millions still hold. Be they the heroes and villains who have shaped the land since with their deeds, slaying armies and ruining cities. Their acts are monumental, their personages monolithic, but it is their stories that truly shape the land. Stories are the lifeblood of a people, they shape their culture, their very way of thinking. And, in every one of these tales, these legends, there is a single shared strand. Everyone must sleep. Everyone must eat. Everyone desires companionship. In all of these legends, these myths, these heroic tales: a single constant. The Tavern.

Adventuring is not for you, and no God has made you his chosen. Evil is, well, risky. Politics is boring and deadly in equal measure. Farming? You'd rather plant a hoe into your own head than into the dirt for the rest of your days. No, you will become legend through the clearest, best path you can imagine. Its time to open a Tavern. The Tavern.

You are Tallius Urist, once a senator of the Protectorate and now a disgraced outlaw, looking to start a new life under a new name. Last time you purchased the dilapidated Crossroads Outpost, near the adventuring hotspot of Origin, the Clockwork Capitol. To acquire manpower and materiel to renovate what you hope will become your Tavern, you traveled to the nearby village of Gearwatch. Negotiating the services and resources of the Elven craftsman Santher, you then moved to scout out the town's own Tavern, in hopes of securing a supplier for food and drink. There you now stand, as the large, bespectacled barman who calls himself Martellus asks you to take a seat and order a drink, and his energetic, frighteningly strong companion Sif darts about, clumsily preparing a flagon.

What's next is up to you, Tallius.

Maybe try to find out who supplies them.

You have close cropped brown hair, and are clean shaven. You will remain so, lest someone recognize your once distinctive facial hair. Your wife used to call your eyes liar's blue. You never got along with Lucretia all that well, but she has a point there. You are currently wearing high quality, but not high profile, traveler's leathers.

Eventually, we should go check out the nearby wizard's guild, see if they can help in the construction to magic up some extra shadowy corners in our place. Those stereotypical quest givers love their shadowy corners, they do!

You order a drink, plopping your coin pouch down on the table as you sit.

"Gents, let us drink! A mug of your best!"

Martellus's eyebrow raises, and Sif drops the tankard she had just filled, luckily managing the catch it with a mad scramble of limbs and cursing. She stares wide eyed at your money.

" I could buy half the fucking town with that much dosh, Marty!"

" I informed you adamantly and repeatedly, it is Martellus, Sif, no one names me "Marty", its so very..."

Martellus sneers as if swallowing a particularly bitter brew.

"... illiterate"

You have no idea what they are talking about. This was a trivial amount of money back in the Capitol. You know money has a different value out in the provinces, but no one should be having conniptions over a mere 2,700! You used to make that in half a week, before counting the various bribes and palm greasing every senator takes for granted.

Martellus gathers himself, taking the flagon from Sif and sending her for tankards, she grabs three, and the duo sit across the table from you. You were told that such things were improper etiquette in a Tavern, but you suppose rules might be loosened when you only have a single customer.

Martellus turns his barman on.

" Now this, friend, is our most superior concoction. It is my very own masterpiece of the brewing arts."

He straightens his glasses, clears his throat, and pours the three tankards up to the brim, his skills evident as not a drop of foam escapes from the vessels.

" I present to you, ladies and gentlemen, Martellus' Most Malicious Meridian Beer!"

That, you think, had to be practiced. Meridia explains the man's odd complexion, the people of the central province were known for their dusky skin and skill with the arcane. You have not a clue how he has come so far north. Meridians were rare in the capitol, and that was closer by a good deal, though to the south rather than north.

(1/2)
>>
Well, let's knock one back with both of them. I wonder how this will compare with my previous experiences with top shelf brandy and good wine from the southern lands?
>>
>>24225665

Still, you have a drink in front of you, and business to attend besides. You down part of the tankard, and your eyes widen. You heard that the brews of the Capitol were watered down compared to the provincial artisan beers, but this is on another level. A hint of nuts provides an odd bite to what otherwise tastes crisp and light, with a hint of citrus, you think.

You look up at Martellus and Sif, the latter of which is bouncing up and down in her seat for some reason, her tankard already empty, as the older man sips his, well, scholarly.

" You brew this yourself, Martellus? Where did you lean that, I thought Meridians were of a more, eh, magical persuasion"

He smirks.

" Verily. They train you in alchemy down in the University of Meridia, but I found my talents misused on poisons and poultices. Man's greatest friend has ever been a stout drink, no offense intended to our canine compatriots. So why not work to improve it. They thought me consumned by trivial matters, and so told me to move on or get out. I moved on, indeed, and eventually ended up brewing for old Donner. He gave me the venue and the customers, I gave him the advantage over his competition."

You wonder why he's telling you all this, why they both seem so eager over the custom of a single man. Still, you are not done with questions.

" And how do you get foodstuffs out here? You must have a supplier, I am told no Farmer will brave tilling the soil this close to Origin."

Sif perks up, slamming down the defeated remnants of her second Tankard, her red hair covering one of her eyes as she leans over the table, reminding you of a small child.

" Old Donny had some shit on a sleazy caravaner, so the bastard gave us a great price on meat and bread and pretty much anything Marty, er, Martellus couldn't brew up himself, like wine or liquor. It was a damn good setup, Donny was the best at such things."

(2/3)
>>
>>24225938

Sif and Martellus both look a bit sad for a moment. It seems they were fond of their late employer. Not that you sought to bring up unpleasant memories, but you still feel a bit bad about it. You did, however, get the information you needed. It was all too easy. In fact, both of them seem to be watching you expectantly. You slide your coinpouch back towards you, almost unconsciously. This situation is becoming difficult for you to read.

What next, Tallius?

>>24225306

Lucretia Le'Eforet, or Lucretia Sertorius as she was named after marrying Tallius, or at least the man he once was.

The Le'Eforet family is one of the most influential in the Protectorate, claiming descent from Louis Eforet, who led an order of Paladins to join the Lord Protector in his great conquest. The match was a coup for the Sertorius family, arranged by you father in return for a service rendered to the Le'Eforets, which you have never been told the nature of.

The arrangement was made when both of you were small children, and you grew up together, Lucretia often being the only person you saw for weeks at a time, other than servants, as your father left on Senatorial business. You were good friends, effectively inseparable by the time you were teens.

Then, as you came of age, the marraige compact was sealed and you began your lives together. Things quickly began to sour. Your father retired from public life, effectively bequeathing his seat to you with his farewell address. You took up his duties with gusto, which unfortunately meant you had little time for Lucretia or the joys of home life. Before long your dearest friend became spiteful, which hardly made you wish to return home more often. You soon began working later and later, dreading the sight of the woman you were supposed to return home to.

And then, the scandal. Last you spoke, Lucretia promised to choke you with your own manhood. So much for the childhood friend romances you read so much about. You don't blame her, not really, but you realize that her family now wants your head, and she is very much inclined to aid them in that pursuit. Her honor and reputation are beyond repair until you are brought to "justice". Your honor and reputation are irrelevant. Tallius Urist needs nothing but his dignity.

You move to apologize.

" It seems you lost a good friend as well as an employer, I apologize if I have brought up unpleasant memories."

Sif downs another tankards, drawing a poisonous look from Martellus.

" Thatsh right fuckin' propah of youu, misshhter..."

She looks up to the ceiling again, as if expecting your name to fall from it and strike her across the brow. You never gave it, of course.

You decide to add ' incredible lightweight' to the growing list of social disabilities afflicting the girl. Well, at least she's pretty.

You turn your attentions to Martellus, as he is evidently very much the brains of the outfit. You indicate your, now half-empty, tankard.

"I haven't had anything this good in my entire life, and it would be a waste to see such talent go to waste..."

The Meridian seems to have gotten the message.

" You are implying you have a suggestion for the two of us that goes beyond running an empty Tavern for no compensation? I am, unsurprisingly, willing to hear your offer. Though I would like your name first, before poor Sif has a seizure trying to remember that you never told us."

Your offer, Tallus?

If attempting to name a price, or compensation, please accompany your post with a d100. Will take the first two.

" I'm sorry, how rude of me! Tallus Urist, at your service! A pleasure to meet your acquaintances, Master Martellus, Lady Sif."

Sif stands up, her face, already blushed from all of Martellus' brew that she has downed, turns even redder, and she stands out of her chair, skipping about the room, knocking a few tables over as if they weighed nothing at all.

" Lay-dey Siphf, ha ha ha-Fuck!"

She runs right into a pillar, the first thing in the tavern to withstand her stampede about the taproom, and falls to the side, hitting the ground amidst a tangle of upturned tables and chairs.

Martellus is mortified, though you feel he has seen this behavior before.

" This is why Donnel forbade her to drink on shift..."

You attempt to ignore Sif, who is still laughing and cursing a storm to your immediate right.

" Martellus, here is my offer. I am making the old Crossroads Outpost into an establishment for travellers, and I need people to run it. You and Lady Sif," Another snort of hysterics from across the room. "... have experience and abilities that I lack. 30 gold a week, ten more a week for an insurance pool, and another 15 to make way for any lessons you might need to acclimate. Some etiquette coaching for Lady Sif first on the list. Sound acceptable?"

Martellus looks you in the eye, a contemplative look furrowing his brow.

" I need a hundred to move my brewing equipment. I will deign to speak for Sif, I am sure she will understand." The room is suddenly unnervingly silent, and you see that Sif has passed out, sitting in one of the few upright chairs as if nothing strange had occurred at all.

" Your offer is acceptable otherwise, Master Urist. We both need a new place of employment, as Donner's wastrel of a nephew has made his intentions clear regarding the future of Donner's Tavern. I have may dignity, and I will not work in a brothel. Neither will Sif, no matter what she says about the matter."

Are his counter terms acceptable?
>>
>>24227447
I think we shall accept. A hundred gold for moving the old equipment and another 50 to buy whatever new equipment you and Lady Sif need to settle in with. Giving a little extra to make a good impression. We are going to be working with these people.

I accept, plus while the brothel will be a shit place to work for , eventually if we last long enough we could convince the former ladies of the evening to join our establishment in a non sex-work related job capacity, driving that dog-tonker out of business.
>>
>>24227545
Do we really want that? Ex-brothel workers bring ex-brothel customers with them, some of whom will not react kindly to being told that the girls are now off-limits, and of course some of the girls might then try and make some extra money on the side, and suddenly people start thinking our place IS a brothel.

Let's just drive him out of business by being better than him (and possibly sabotaging him if he turns out to be a complete tosser).

>>
>>24227535

" I think we shall accept. A hundred gold for moving the old equipment and another 50 to buy whatever new equipment you and Lady Sif need to settle in with."

Martellus raises his eyebrow even further, which is an accomplishment, you must admit.

" That is, well, extraordinarily generous, Master Urist. You have a deal. I will give Sif her signing bonus whenever she manages to get up, and we will travel to the outpost on the morrow."

He stands.

" I look forward to working for you, Master Urist, may our partnership end more favorably than my last."

His hand extends, and you shake it. He mentions that the caravaner should be in town the next day, and he will transfer Donner's old arrangement to you before leaving for the outpost. The deal sealed, you say your farewells, nodding to Sif's prone form, her snoring clear under the several tables which cover her like blankets. Martellus begins wearily returning the furnishings to their prior positions as you leave.

Gearwatch's bustle appears to be winding down as the afternoon begins. You estimate about five hours to sundown, and it will take you two to return to the outpost, providing you can manage to find a mount. The various shops and stalls are still open.

>>24227998

Your search for someone to hire as a guard is less fruitful than you would think in such a rough town. Gearwatch is an adventurer's town, and most of the men who would be hired as guards are adventurers. Adventurer's, as it turns out, are expensive. After the third armored warrior, a half orc at the least, informs you that his weekly fee is 750 gold, you decide your time could be better spent for now.

A few things in the market do draw your interest.

A man is selling a well used Gladius. He claims it belonged to one of the Lord Protector's companions, which you might believe were you twelve and Lucretia not there to slap sense into you. Still, it seems a serviceable blade, and is unlikely to draw the attention Father's dagger would. The man asks for five hundred, ridiculous, but you are confident you can talk him down if you dispute the blade's dubious historic significance.

A fat woman is selling some earthenware dining utensils in bulk. There seems to be enough to basically outfit the outpost and then some. Its not pretty, but its a start, and she only asks for a hundred for the whole stock.

There may be other weapons and dining tools elsewhere, but these initially caught your eye.

The man, however, refuses to budge, yelling about the trustworthiness of his supplier for all to hear.

Other weapons available:

A bowyer is offering a simple recurve bow for two hundred gold, along with a full quiver of thirty. You occasionally hunted in your youth, your father was more enthusiastic about it than you ever were, though.

A shady looking man is selling some daggers and blackjacks, simple affairs. 50 gold for one of either.

The shady man makes a deal quickly. You suspect he may have reason to rid himself of these particular weapons post haste, but you manage a pair of dagger and three blackjacks for the low price of 80 gold.

The bowyer is talked down to 150, but a crossbow catches your eye before the deal is struck. He notes that the crossbow used to belong to an adventurer, who pawned it off for money to open a tavern. He hasn't seen him since. He mentions it's yours for 200.

You find a lonely looking building in the poorer part of Gearwatch, lacking the clockwork artifacts built into the wealthier people's structures. There are one or two people eating what looks to be a form of meat skewer inside the restaurant, though you suppose its barely more than a hut that sells food. There are some fresh, uncooked, samples smoking over a fire in the back. Smells delicious.

There are no waiters, just a ramshackle counter built into the wall below a window into the kitchen. You assume this must be where you make your order.

You wait for service, and a few moments pass before you decide to voice your presence.

" Hello-"

" Can I help you?"

You spin rapidly at the voice behind you, repressing the instinct to reach for one of the knives you just purchases.

You lay eyes upon an elven woman wearing an apron, her inhuman purple eyes looking down at you from behind loose strands of shoulder-length black hair. You have not the slightest idea how she managed to get behind you.

What now, Tallius?

You gather yourself, clearing your throat.

" Hello, my name is Tallius Urist, and I would like both your most popular item and the pleasure of your company, just for a few moments."

She cocks her head slightly, seeming somewhat perplexed.

" Tallius Urist? Odd name. I am Miaya, this is my little cafe. I will admit that people rarely come for my company, so I will humor you, just this once. I'll get you a skewer, took down a stag this morning, I hope venison is fine by you."

You nod, and she walks out the door you came in, appearing back behind the counter faster than you would have thought. Sitting down, you note the wall, while mostly bare, has some old paintings on it. The vague, somewhat blurry images tell of Elven work, you remember an art critic you knew in the capitol who called it "Impressionism", and was an admirer. Your father called it shit. Your opinion is somewhere in the middle.

She returns, a venison skewer on a plate in one hand, and a cup in the other. Miaya places both before you.

You bite into one of the morsels on the stick, and your mouth is flooded with succulent juices and a hint of smokey flavor. Its a nice hardy meal, not the best your sophisticated palate has had, but for the price? No way to complain.

" This is very good, Lady Miaya. Very good."

" My thanks, Tallius, but I am no Lady. Let's not stand on ceremony here, what interests you in the dingiest, least popular food stand in Gearwatch?"

Well, she's honest, you'll give her that.

" Well, Miaya, I am opening a Tavern in the old crossroads outpost. I need a cook, and you are my first choice. I can give you the best location for miles, and attached clientele."

She seems interested, and sits across from you at the heavily worn table. Her head cocks again, this time to the left. It's an odd habit, and gives Miaya the look of a curious child, though she is in all likelihood you senior.
>>

Another ten in an insurance pool I've offered to all my other employees."

She nods, and her large eyes momentarily flit to the painting lining the wall.

" I'll even let you display your artwork, Impressionism, I believe?"

She smiles, slightly.

" Yes, Tallius, that is what they call it in the Capitol, I hear. My mother had her own words for it, perhaps I'll tell you some time. You have a deal. I'll close up shop, gather my things, and be at the out post tomorrow."

You shake hands, though she seems confused at first at your outstretched hand. You stand, and turn to leave after finishing your meal and sharing some pleasant conversation with Miaya.

Just before the door, you see he in your peripherals, head cocked to the right again.

" And if you ever want some painting lessons, Tallius, I will simply include it in the fee."

You turn to say something, but Miaya has disappeared yet again. That must be a useful trait for a huntress. An odd one for a cook.

Its near sundown, you imagine you need to get a move on if you wish to make it to the outpost before it is too dark to travel. You've heard stories of killing automata what sneak out of Origin at night, looking for people to butcher and drag back to their charnel-filled garages.

You remember hearing that cart salesmen are a sleazy lot, always looking to make a lopsided deal. You do not remember who told you this, something tells you it was Lucretia, but they certainly were right about it. Yeah, it was probably Lucretia.

The fat, bearded man before you reminds you of nothing more than what might happen if your kindly uncle Marius was eaten by a large bearded man. So, not really like Marius at all, honestly.

" Looking for a cart, are you?!? Well, I have some fine pieces for your perusal, young master, right this way."

This will be fun.
>>
>>24231224
Which reminds me, if we are going to get horse and cart we are going to need a stable for our and other traveler's mounts. We might want to talk to our carpenter friend about that in the morning. Maybe hire a stable boy if we end up doing this.
>>
>>24231709

He has several favorites in his modest stock, unnecessarily embellished woodwork and other additions that would only make sense to a man with more money than sense.

You find a no frills, simple cart. This is what you need, and the old, reliable looking garron tethered to it looks like exactly what should carry it. There would be more than enough room to carry all your new hires, and have plenty of room left over for their belongings and your purchases.

" Ah, thats a beggar's cart sir! And that damned garron is lame, I keep forgetting to send it off to the butcher. I have plenty of other, better deals!"

You are starting to loathe this man.

You do not know how, and to be entirely honest, you barely even remember what the man told you to manage this, but you walk out of the cart salesman's lot leading a horse and cart several degrees finer than you would ever have the use for, and your coinpouch seven hundred gold lighter. There is antique knotwork across the side of the cart, and it is led by a young, strong gelding that you think would be more appropriate as the personal mount of some senator or another. Gods know how the fat bastard got his hands on this thing.

To be frank, you feel violated. You did always let Lucretia handle things at the market, seems that was far wiser than you realized. You suppose you just got lucky with Santher, that damned cart salesman actually knew what he was doing, unlike the Elf.

Well, it suits your purposes, at least. Exceeds them, really. It is dusk, and there is no time to return to the outpost. You suppose you will be staying with Martellus and Sif.

You ride your cart to Donner's Tavern, and note that at least the ride is as smooth as you would expect it to be for such an expensive cart. Night has fallen by the time you arrive, and you wearily pass through the front door. It has been a long day.

Martellus is behind the bar, where you had last seen him, apparently cleaning and packing what tankards and flagons belong to him rather than the bar. Sif is sitting in a chair at the bar, a wet towel on her head and a look of reticent regret on her face. They both spring up at once, a single customer was a surprise, a second one in the same day must be perceived as an impossibility.

Sif runs up with a giddy look on her face.

" Well shit boss, I didn't think you would be back! We've been trying to get Marty, er Martellus's bigass machines ready to move all fucking day. Its good to see you though, boss, Martellus won't call me Lady Sif, even if I say please. Asshole."

Martellus rolls his eyes.

" Welcome back, Master Tallius. I presume you need lodging for the night? You may have the King's Suite. It's at the end of the hall on the second floor. I shall not charge you, that would be circuitous, as you are now my employer. You are, of course, welcome to share a drink with Sif and I, if you prefer not to retire immediately."

" I can drink again, Marty? I can fucking drink?"

Martellus sighs.

" Of course Sif. You can have all the water you could ever want."

She pouts, almost audibly. Such childish mannerisms still do not cease to amuse you applied to a full bodied woman who should really know better. You have certainly acquired some interesting employees.
>>
>>24232891
Sure, share a drink with them (Sif getting water) and tell them of our other recruit and our new found hatred for cart salesman.
>>
>>24232925
Maybe ask if they know of someone we can hire as a stable master as well.
>>
>>24232940
We don't have enough of a stable to require the services of a stable master yet, leave that for later, that way we weren't wasting money.
>>
>>24232891
(To Sif): Well, I hope you don't mind having me stay over for the evening. I figure you two would like to stay one more night and have some nice memories of the place one last time. Besides which, I want to get you at a reasonable time and give a helping hand.

(to both of them): I've found us a cook, as well as a huntress. Elven woman by the name of Miaya, owns a cafe near here, as well as some lovely artwork. She'll be our cook, as well as responsible for our food stores.
>>
>>24232940
>>24232985
Well, a cart driver at least. I want to use this cart till it breaks, after which I'll piss on the shattered hulk and throw the remains at the face of that damned cart salesman. At least earn enough to run him out of business with the cheaper "Carts for rent" idea.
>>
>>24232891
Don't worry Lady Sif, I am sure you will get another opportunity soon enough.
>>
>>24233077
The rental cart idea is a good one and we should look for a cart driver as well, but we still need someone to take care of any horses we have there. The cart driver could help out said stable master when he is not busy.
>>
>>24233077
so we are going start a taxi service?
>>
>>24233127
Miaya might be able to help a bit with the horse, though we should try to find a driver a day or two after we settle into our new tavern.
>>
>>24233185
Agreed, this can be put on the back burner until we get the tavern up and running.
>>
>>24233130
Not immediately, but yes. Anything to one-up that Binkleb- I mean, cart salesman.
>>
>>24233225
Dinkelburg, damnit...
>>
>>24233130
At the very least to Gearwatch.
"Come sit down, have a drink, and get some rest! Oh? You want to head out to town after all that? Well we just so happen to have a cart that will take you there for a small fee" I'm imagining something like that.

You sit down at the bar, Martellus bringing out a pitcher of beer, and sliding a glass of water to Sif as she takes a seat next to you. She sniffs it, frowns, and takes a few hesitant sips, holding the glass in both hands, as if it could fly out of her grip at any moment. Martellus pours of the dark beer into two tankards, giving one to you and keeping the other for himself.

" A different brew?" You ask.

" Indeed. This is a, well, thicker, variety. Good for late evenings and long days. I imagine you will find something to like. Master Tallius."

You decide you like Martellus. He reminds you of a butler your father once had. You always liked old Alfred, shame about that incident with the bats. He's right about the beer, its delicious, almost chocolate in flavor. The perfect cap to a full day.

You turn to the barmaid.

" I hope you do not mind me staying over, Lady Sif, I am sure you two would like to have some memories of this place to share on this last night."

Her face lights up at her faux-title.

" Not a fucking bit, boss. Its nice to have someone call me Lady, and Martellus is a good sort, but a bit light on conversation, at least the normal kind."

" It is hardy my fault you find nothing interesting in the discourses of the Eastern philosophers. If you cannot hold a conversation about the nature of rebirth in the psuedo-religious metanarrative of the tribal desert nomads, well, I cannot be blamed for your shortcomings."

This time Sif rolls her eyes. You have to agree, that does not sound like a fun time.

You decide to tell them about Miaya. Sif seems excited to meet her.

" An elf! I have always wanted to meet one of those fuckers! I mean, I've seen a few, and one of them grabbed my ass once, but that doesn't count because I threw the bitch out of the bar. Tell me, does she move like a ghost? I hear they can float, and can move faster than your eyes can see. I hear-"

Didn't we decide on Hearthstone previously?

And we served red, blue, yellow and green-colored drinks that supposedly "heal" you or "recharge" your mana?
>>
>>24232626
Lucretia's Shame.
>>
>>24233319
OOH, I like. Maybe "Regret" instead, though. It might make her possibly reconsider if she finds out about us.
>>
>>24233309
Ah, I had almost forgotten about that. Shall we just go with that then?
>>24233319
I think that is like painting a big red target on us as it's awfully specific.
>>
>>24233319
>>24233377
A bad idea to name our ex-wife with our tavern while we're a wanted man.
>>
Throughly enjoyed this quest in the archive, op. keep it up
>>
>>24233395
I thought that we were only shooting ideas around at that point.
>>
>>24233427

It was a really good idea though.
>>
>>24233298
You decide to tune the rest out. This must be what Martellus feels like all the time, he is currently shaking his head softly so it seems this is well-trod territory for him. Still, Sif has her charms, you suppose. They're just somewhat difficult to find beneath all the cursing, violence, and alcohol. At least she's pretty.

Martellus nods after her tirade ceases, likely because she notices you are not answering. Sif goes back to pouting, letting the barman speak.

" Indeed, this Miaya rounds off our needs, between the three of us and your recent purchases, we have everything we need to operate, at least at the most basic of levels."

To your right, pouting intensifies. To make some sort of point lost on you, Sif decides it's time to go to sleep. Downing her water as if it were something worth downing at such a speed, she storms up the stairs.

" Do not worry yourself about Sif, Master Tallius. She's more cunning than she seems. You eventually come to realize when she is simply acting offended in order to engender a reaction. This is one of those times. She will be back to herself on the morrow."

You nod, taking Martellus' advice regarding Sif. He knows her better than you, after all. You continue talking of trivial things for some time, you attempting to direct him away from overly academic subjects. Hours pass. Eventually Martellus yawns. You are momentarily surprised, that's unlike his usual controlled mannerisms.

" Apologies, Master Tallius. You have been a most pleasing man to converse with. I feel we have made the right choice accepting your offer. If you will excuse me, I have more packing to do."

Martellus disappears into the back, where you assume he keeps his brewing equipment. Left alone in the taproom, you decide to retire to the King's Suite.

Half way down the hall, stands Sif in a bedrobe. You are far too tired for this, even if it does accentuate her curves.

" You fucking ignored me, Tallius. That's not how you treat friends."

>>
>>24233427
Add it to the shortlist then?
>>
>>24233493

Not that my opinion counts, but Crossed Woman sounded pretty nice. Up to you guys, though, we are not really at the point of this decision yet.
>>
I think Hearthstone is meh, to campy we are looking to get adventurers in here.

Dont name the bar after the wife name some of the drinks after her that way you can be careful who you tell the name to.

To Lady Sif "Why Lady Sif I am dreadfully sorry if you thought so, it has been such a long day and I have been conversing with so many people I seemed to have just forgotten my manners. To answer your question the elf seems to move quicker then at least I can follow. I was not ignoring you I just spaced for a moment. Dreadfully sorry."
>>
>>24233537
Me again.

"Sit Lady Sif, have a beer I promise not to tell Marty. I was just sitting here debating names for our new bar."
>>
>>24233506
Of course, just throwing idea around.
>>24233485
>>24233537
This basicly, maybe add a bow at the end and ask for her forgiveness for added flavor.
>>24233547
...but we are on our way to bed, unless you want to turn around and grab something for her which I don't mind either.
>>
>>24233580
Well, let's have a (emphasizing this) SMALL drink as an apology. I got some questions to ask you, and I figure you also have a few for me, as well. Would you like to join me, Milady?
>>
>>24233547
>>24233580

Going to need confirmation on getting Sif a drink. Thats going to lead to things.
>>
>>24233643

Well, as I post it, haha.
>>
>>24233643
A small drink wouldn't hurt as long as we make sure it's only a small one.
>>
>>24233652
I'm OK with this.

Still let's try not to blow our relationship with our employees with sex, not this soon, anyways. Then it'll be awkward to the nth degree for a while...

Let's just answer her questions, ask her some of our own, and call it a night.
>>
>>24233728
I think this is a test to see how we will react. So talking over a small drink should be fine, but lets not aim too far.
>>
>>24233547
>>24233643
>>24233580
>>24233537

" Why Lady Sif, I am dreadfully sorry If I have offended you. I forgot myself. How about you and I have a beer, and we'll not tell Martellus about it."

Sif's face lights up.

" Don't think this gets you out of trouble, jackass."

She says that, but she's already headed backdown to the taproom in her bedrobe. By the gods, the woman has no shame. Its good the lights are dim, as you are almost certain that thin bedrobe would be defeated by even the slimmest amount of illumination.

You follow her down, careful to not make much noise. This reminds you of sneaking to the kitchens with Lucretia as kids, trying not to wake your father. Someday you will find other memories to go back to, but you cannot help where your mind dwells. For that matter, you did wake your father that night. It led into "the talk", which was hardly a good time. Especially as the old man insisted Lucretia be there for it. Best to move on.

Sif waits at the same seat, arms crossed over her chest, expectantly looking at you as you make your way behind the bar. You find a pitcher of the same thick beer as before, Martellus either forgot it or intended to finish it himself. No matter, it serves your purposes well enough.

You pour Sif and yourself a cup, using the smaller glasses rather than the large tankards.

She smiles.

" Apology accepted. You're still a jackass though."

You smirk, despite yourself.

" So, tell me about the elf, Tallius."

You do so, confirming some of her suspicions, refuting others. It takes a good ten minutes to assure Sif that her priest must have been lying about Elves being able to float.

Before long, you pass into more casual conversation. To your relief, she seems to be taking her time with the beer, whether out of genuine interest in your conversation or the thickness of the brew you cannot tell.

" So, Tallius, what brings a man to come all the way to fucking Gearwath to open a Tavern?
>>
>>24233775
Wasn't aiming for it in the first place, but I agree.

"A drink before bed, Lady Sif?"
>>
>>24233867
"Well, I figured you would have a question like that..."

Sip drink

Tell me, Lady Sif, did you ever do a thing that you ever have truly regretted? Something that you thought would bring you the appreciation of some one you wanted to love you? Something that backfired on you, and ruined any chance of forgiveness from that person?"
>>
>>24233867
"Some men dream of adventure, others of politics. I dream of making a meager living owning a tavern in the back end of nowhere."
>>
>>24233867
"I came here because it seemed like a good location to open a tavern, it's in the middle of a crossroads, so it bound to get some traffic."

100% truth, but without the risk of getting wind of our bounty.
>>
>>24233928
"something like that happened to me, It hurts to tell of it, I lost something dear to me and decided to leave home and start over. Hopefully new friends and work will mend my wounds someday and I can tell you the whole story. For now though I believe we should get to bed, after all we have a Tavern to open tomorrow. Goodnight Lady Sif, see you in the morning."
>>
>>24233928
>>24234017
I am okay with this, maybe ask for this to be a secret between the two of them. Though I can't help but think we are going to be plagued with memories of Lucretia. It's not helping that she is actually after us with a chance of us seeing her again.
>>
>>24233992
Eh, I figure we might as well hint a bit about our situation. Sif seems smarter then she lets on, and I doubt that she'll let that go at "It looks like its a good time for owning a tavern". With the hinting, she might not delve too deep, as she might have her own regrets as well...
>>
>>24234017
Actually this is the perfect time to ask her about her own past. What brought her here?
>>
>>24233992
Partial truths are better then lies so we dont get caught up later and lose her trust. She has just lost a friend and boss, play on that and say we were hurt to (same guy as >>24234017) We have charisma we know how to dance around a conversation I mean who better then a politician to never answer a direct question asked to him
>>
>>24234090
Agreed. A little bit for a little bit. Build a bit of camaraderie between us.
>>
>>24233867

You look at Sif, a serious look coloring your face.

"Lady Sif, some men dream of adventure, others of politics. Some pick up swords and aspire to join the champions of old. I dream of making a meager living owning a tavern in the ass end of nowhere."

Sif spits out the mouthful of brew she was sipping in, and begins laughing hysterically. You narrowly avoid being soaked, and laugh yourself at her overreaction.

You both calm yourselves, and Sif has the presence of mind to look embarrassed over it.

" I actually figured a question like this might come up. Tell me, Lady Sif, have you ever done something you truly regret? Something that came back to haunt you, something you crave forgiveness for, knowing it will never be given? I have. I lost many things, some of them very dear to me, and there is no regaining them. I am here for a new life, for the happiness of new memories to be a salve for the scars of the old. Why a Tavern? I still don't know. I guess it's because I still want to be around people. I think, maybe, that makes me a fool. But I'd rather live a moment in good company than an eternity alone."

Sif looks sad. She touches your forearm softly, a look of concern in her eyes.

" Tallius, we all have regrets. It must hurt, your story is so vague, I can only think the details must pain you. That's okay."

You look at her.

" How did you get here, then, Lady Sif?"

She looks wistful, a bitter smile crosses her face.

" I used to be in the Protectorate military, now I'm not. I have some regrets, a lot of fucking regrets, but that damned life is behind me now. Tallius, I think you can relate, from what you've told me. Some day, I'll tell you more, but you'll have to trade more of your story."

Sif stands, uncharacteristically leaving her beer half full.

" Goodnight Tallius, I'll see you tomorrow. We have a Tavern to start, after all."

She heads up the stairs, leaving you to finish your beer in silence.

>>
>>24234296
Lost in thought, you can't even muster the will to look up her bedgown as she heads up the stairs. A shame, you are pretty certain Sif has nothing on under it.

A voice from above.

" Tallius."

Sif is leaning over the rail at the top of the stairs, one eye covered by her hair just as it was earlier in the day.

" You're still a jackass."

She disappears into the second floor. You take a few moments to finish your drink, hesitate, and finish hers as well. No need to waste stock. You then, finally, move to the King's Suite uninterrupted. Collapsing into bed, your thoughts are consumed by plans, business, funds, but most of all regret. Sleep claims you shortly.

It's been a long fucking day.

*************

Gentlemen, thank you for participating in this installment of Tavern Quest. As always, we run from 5-11 Eastern on Saturdays, though that end time is nebulous, apparently. Remember to upvote if you enjoyed the thread, and feedback is more than welcome. Have a nice week, and don't do anything Tallius wouldn't.
>>
>>24234376
Thanks for the chance to play! I enjoyed this a lot. Have a good one, Barkeep!
>>
>>24234376
Thanks for running this and keep up the good work Barkeep.
>>
Thank you very much barkeep! I came late this evening but I have enjoyed both the sessions thoroughly! Keep it up and think about running it more then once a week I may just fall in love with you then!
>>
>>24234376
I do have a question about he scandal. Is it going to be one of those thing we find out about slowly throughout the quest or shall it remain a mystery and left up to our imaginations.
>>
>>24234514

I haven't decided. It really depends on when/if Lucretia shows up.

I do know what it is though, but it will be vague unless directly relevant.

>>24234500

I would love to do this, and may well in the future. Unfortunately it is simply not possible just not. I'd rather be able to give my full attention to a single weekly session than have to periodically cancel daily ones. If the schedule changes, you will be told, I assure you.
>>
>>24234545

That is, just now, damn it's late.
>>
>>24234545
Thought so and really i'm almost looking forward to the confrontation with Lucretia.
It should be interesting to see how this quest continues. Another question if I may, I'm guessing we can increase our different skills the more we use them correct? Become better at bartering the more you succeed etc.
>>
>>24234665

Indeed, there will not be a direct input leveling system, things will occur naturally.
>>
>>24234693
Thanks for answering my few question Barkeep and I hope you have a good week. See next time.
>>
>>24234693

Thanks for the session, though I missed most of it while at work.

See you next week.
>>
>>24234693
Thanks for the thread! I was asleep most of the time so i couldn't participate in the last half, but it was fun! See ya next time
