In the end, we differ the most from the true Blood Angels in who we place our faith in first. We revere the Emperor before our genetic fathers, the primarchs. Sanguinus himself is considered secondary, despite being the source of our Geneseed. An odd tradition for a second founding chapter to be sure.

A chill ran down Vergil's spine as he gazed upon the Cold Angel that had come down from the sky itself in that Iron Bird, garbed in ice and blood. The skull of some beast was painted on to its shoulder, the giant's skeletal horned mask echoing it. It's eyes glowed a husky red, like that of the sunsets he saw every night, a spot of hot fire within the Cold Angel.

It extended a massive hand to him, covered in the ice-metal the old ones had described to him on the long nights of the time of long nights when the tribe had all gathered together within the chief's hall to celebrate the year and the God of Man. The voice that spoke to Vergil sounded like glaciers rubbing against each other.

"Would you become an Angel, little one?"


The Blade of Winter looked down upon the prospective Aspirant, the young man nearly paralyzed in shock at seeing a legend given flesh and voice. The Head Chaplain's helm tended to have that effect, which was why he'd convinced Tyco to let him borrow it. Those in awe were less likely to run.

Tentatively, the Feral's hand reached out and grasped his own, almost as if to see if he was real or not. That was all the acceptance he needed. The Blade of Winter grasped even tighter and drew the young man closer, pointing his hand towards the Thunderhawk.

"Now, we go to the stars, little one. Forget everything else, but the chill of death."

Their excitement was palpable as they traded whispers and hushed laughs, craning their little necks to get a better look at the midnight blue curtain that ran along the back wall. Tonight marked the dawn of the Festival of Angels, a week-long proving ceremony in which the greatest warriors of each tribe gathered to prove their worth to the legendary Ice Angels. The beating of the spirit drums began to increase in pace, and a hush fell over the crowd. From behind the curtain, a voice like weathered stone cried out.

The Great Elder, Chief of Chiefs, burst out from within the sheet, adorned in the skull of a deer and the skins of many predators. In his hands he wielded a torch that burned with the color of an evening sky. He walked across the makeshift stage, crouching low at random to growl in the faces of some of the children, who yelped in fright and joy at the spectacle.

Braka faced the crowd at large, and cleared his throat:

"It is said that long ago, when the stars were but children and the people of our world were yet unborn, a great warrior forged his kingdom in the sky. With hands of fire and eyes that burned like the sun, he did battle with the nightmares of the world, led by the wicked Haurus!" The elder drew back some of the veil, revealing a painting on the wall of a demonic figure. A massive, skeletal beast with horns that stretched to the sky, belched fire from its fanged maw. It had one yellow eye, the inside of which was painted with an eight-pointed star. The children hissed and booed the devil, but were quickly silenced by a look from Braka.
"But the Greatest Chieftain was no fool, he did not fight alone! Beside him, his greatest son, Angelus, did battle!" The curtain was drawn farther back, revealing two figures painted in gold standing before the black demon.

"But no demon can withstand the power of a father in mourning."
With a flourish, Braka tore down the remainder of the curtain, showing the rest of the mural. The Chieftain stood over the demon, white lines streaking from his hands into the sky. "The Great Chieftain rose up, filled with a terrible anger, and drove his flaming blade deep into the heart of the Haurus! It screamed in terror, clawing and biting at the Chieftain's flesh, but to no avail!" The children cheered and hugged one another, lost in the spur of the moment. "With Haurus defeated, the shadows and devils under its control fled, and order was brought to the heavens!
"But the Chieftain had paid a terrible price. His son had been slain, and he would soon succumb to his own wounds. Using the last of his tremendous strength, he broke the soul of Angelus into pieces, and scattered all but one piece among the stars. This final piece he used to create a race of news sons, that might carry on the battle against evil in His name. Those sons are the Ice Angels, the greatest warriors of the heavens. It is said that when the good suffer, or the wicked prosper, the Angels descend from on high. They come in boats carved of lightning, that roar like an angry sea! They are clad in armor forged from pure ice, that their foes may feel the cold hands of death upon them! But above all, they wear the skull of Haurus, that all may know not even the King of Demons can stand against their fury!"

But the most common legend, is one shared by nearly every tribe - that of the beast known as Wendigo. Wendigo, he of the Leaping Deer skull and Bonefaced Elk antlers and Crouching Bear claws. Wendigo, who eats flesh and drinks blood without distinction. Wendigo, the man who sleeps next to you in your own hut.

Wendigo is feared not because he is terrible, for he is, not because he is strong, for he is, but because Wendigo is the Fallen Man, the brother lost to the taste of flesh and bone of his family. Wendigo is put short, the man who is no longer a man in mind or body. There are many variations of the tales of Wendigo throughout the multitude of tribes, and many have since the arrival of the Imperium added tales of the Cold Angels battling with Wendigo, and defeating them in vicious combat.

The Blades of Winter know differently. Unlike in the stories, their inner Wendigo will in the end, always win.
