Heya /tg/. In light of the news that our beloved John Galt is delivering on his promise to recreate the RPG The Riddle of Steel but make it better, I have decided to run a fecht thread -- a duel thread. This will be like the Riddle of Steel duels we used to have, or the GURPS duels that show up here occasionally, but in this case I'm doing something I don't think anyone has done before.

I'm pitting two knights in full plate armor against each other, using FATAL's rules.

The characters are created and ready to go.

Come and join the fun! It's sure to be a lovely trainwreck.

Let me explain how this works.

In FATAL, skills are checked against 3d10, plus modifiers. You compare that to a THreshold. In combat this TH is called Current Armor, or CA. It is almost exactly like Armor Class from D&D. If your 3d10 roll plus modifiers EQUALS or EXCEEDS the CA of the target on the location you hit, you hit!

But take note: if your roll fails because of the CA bonus your target gets for wearing armor, your blow hit and damaged his armor. This is going to happen a lot in this fight, I think.

But you don't just roll 3d10 and have fun. Oh no.
In FATAL, each round represents 3 seconds. Each of our fighters gets one attack per round.
At the start of each round, we roll Initiative. This is a d100 roll modified by a number. Helmin rolls 1d100 - 60. Yes, minus sixty. Laurence rolls 1d100 - 27.

We can cancel out those mods so that Helmin rolls 1d100 - 33 and Laurence rolls a straight 1d100.

After initiative, a fighter can launch an attack. Before you decide WHAT or HOW you attack, you determine WHERE your attack will land. To do that you roll 1d100 on the BPP chart and see what you get. Both our fighters are humans, so we use the human chart.

After that, you roll 3d10, add your modifiers, and hope it's equal to or above the CA on that target.

Any natural roll of 6 or less is a FUMBLE.
Any natural roll of 25 or more, that also beats the target's CA by 3 or more, causes GRAPHIC GORE. (That means we roll on the wound table, kiddies!)
Any natural roll of 30 is an AUTOMATIC HIT.

Got it? Good.

>>24154368
What we could do is houserule it with the BPP percentage as a to-hit modifier...I'll think about it.
>>
>>24154368
>speed it up

You're not familiar with FATAL are you?

When I said that the knight is most likely to take three steps forward, trip and impale himself, that's an actual risk.
>>
So apparently there's some manner of character-generator out there.

Is this true? Because I'd be interested in making a FATAL character for shits 'n giggles without having to figure trigonometry
>>
>>24154496
> Helmin rolls 1d100 - 60. Yes, minus sixty. Laurence rolls 1d100 - 27.

>We can cancel out those mods so that Helmin rolls 1d100 - 33 and Laurence rolls a straight 1d100.

There's one more thing I messed up on. The damage for the weapons. I forgot to account for the fulcrum points of the weapons.

Adjust the damage for the weapons as follows:

Damage Hacking Zweihander: 4d12 * 1.30 (Strength) * 0.72 (Fulcrum point 22)
Damage against Plate Mail or Wood Kite Shield: 4d12 * 1.30 (Strength) * 0.72 (Fulcrum point 22) * 0.40 [-60%]

In other words, Zweihander Hacking damage is 4d12 * 0.3744, giving a range between 1 and 17 damage.

Damage Pounding Mace: [1d20 +3] * 1.14 (Strength) * 0.90 (Fulcrum point 10)
Damage against Plate Mail: [1d20 +3] * 1.14 (Strength) * 0.90 (Fulcrum point 10) * 0.30 [-70%]

In other words again, Mace Pounding damage is [1d20+3] * 0.3078 , giving a range between 1 and 7 damage.

>>24154637
You don't have to do trig, just algebra. I think the character generator is on /rs/. If not I'll put it up there. Be warned that it doesn't COMPLETELY make the character, it's for an older version of FATAL (believe it or not), and the program will cuss at and insult you in text if you push the wrong keys.

>>24154663
You are right, but it is more convenient than repeatedly subtracting heavy numbers *every single round*. I don't remember what happens in the event of a tie, but it's only a one-in-a-hundred chance anyway, yeah?

Well I was assuming that you couldn't go below 1. If thats the case, than in the original version the chances of a tie are considerably higher (anytime helmin gets <61 and Laurence gets <28). That's the where the major difference is.

Of course, I wouldn't be surprised if FATAL uses negatives, in which case they are equivalent, I believe.

I need to go get some food, I'll be back in a couple minutes.

Also, I forgot three things. Two I can tell you about right now, the third I'll get to later.

1) To hit rolls. I forgot to consider the fighters' skills. Add +8 to each of their to hit rolls, thanks to their Weapon (General) skills being 8. This means Helmid Waad has 3d10+16, and Laurence Houby has 3d10+15.

2) Penetration values for weapons. Talk about a horrible rule. I was up til 3 am yesterday trying to figure out how it worked. Rather, I was trying to confirm it works the way it seems it should. Look here >>24153921 . See the Penetration line in the weapon statistics block? You basically subtract that from your to hit roll when attacking that level of armor. That means:

Helmin Waad's to hit against Laurence Houby is 3d10+16-10 = 3d10+6.
Laurence Houby's to hit against Helmin Waad is 3d10+15-15 = 3d10.

This basically means they're going to be incompetent and have to batter down each others' armor before they can even hurt each other, unless they get lucky with their attack rolls. I'm leaving this decision up to you guys: if we COMPLETELY IGNORE the penetration rules, the battle will be bloodier and swifter! If we include them, the battle will consist of hammering each others' armor until it's literally falling off.

I prefer the first option, but hey, it's your guys' call.

In the meantime, want to find out how I found the necessary Strength and fulcrum point for Helmin Waad? Sure you do. Here you go.

/tg/ has spoken. You guys are the boss! We go with it.

There are other mechanics for losing life points as so on which I will include as soon as they become available.

I'd like to try one practice swing for each fighter so we all understand how this works. First, Sir Helmin will take a swing a peasant unwisely standing next to the knight. The peasant is naked because that's how peasant men are in the southern Queendoms. Ready to take a swing and see how badly a big sword screws up the human body?

Roll 1d100 for the Body Part we'd hit, then roll 3d10+16 to see where the blow lands. (Nakedness counts as light armor, and there's no penalty to hit for zweihanders for that.)

That's an easy hit. An average human has a natural CA of 10.

The Zweihander deals 4d12 * 1.30 (Strength) * 0.72 (fulcrum point) to the man's naked body.

>>24155742
34 * 1.30 * 0.72 = 31 damage!

We almost always truncate fractions in our final results in FATAL.

When you deal damage to a person, you deal damage in 2 ways. The amount of damage you roll is subtracted from the other guy's Life Points. It's his hit points basically.

But you also subtract an equal number of Body Part Points from the part you hit. You get BPP for each individual body part by running a calculation. An average human has 20 Life Points, but his Upper Torso only has (20 LP * 3 * 0.29 proportion of upper torso to the rest of the body) = 17 Body Part Points.

When a body part's BPP is reduced to zero, that part is rendered FOREVER USELESS. (Book's own words.) Drop a guy's groin to zero? No more children for him. Drop a guy's arm to zero? No more arm. Drop their Upper Torso, Lower Torso, or Head/Face to zero? They're in the dead book now.

If you dealt only 17 damage, the man would lose his Upper Torso and be slain. The same happens if you destroy a person's Lower Torso or Head/Face.

If you dealt MORE than enough damage to destroy a part, it is severed.

So you just cut this man in half. I hope you're proud of yourself.

Next is Laurence Houby's turn. Same deal, hit a regular guy.

Roll me a d100, 3d10+15, and a 1d20! In that order!

>>24155960
17 + 3 = 20 damage.
20 * 1.14 (Strength) * 0.90 (fulcrum) = 20 damage.

Lower Torso BPP = (20 LP * 3 * 0.19 proportion) = 11
11 - 20 = FOREVER USELESS

Normally you can't deal more damage than the body part can take. It's just like GURPS in that regard. But since you die if your torso or head is rendered FOREVER USELESS, it doesn't matter in this case.

It WOULD have mattered if you hit the guy's left hand instead. Then he would have lost (20 * 3 * 0.01) = 1 LP and would have no longer had a hand. He would have had 19/20 LP remaining though.

Got a feel for the damage and to-hit calculations?

We're going to get this party started then.

A 28, huh?

As it happens, his CAH on his hand is...

12 + 15 Clamshell Gauntlets + 1 Armor General = 28

The first hit of the combat actually got through! I can scarcely believe it.

I assume it was a hacking attack. (Remember, Waad can STAB with the zweihander, too!

>Is there even any reason to try to stab?
Well, there'd be a couple reasons.

First, the Kite Shield and Platemail Suit that Houby has reduces Hacking damage by 60%, and Pounding damage by 70%. However, it only reduces Stabbing damage by 20%!

Second, running can help give you a bonus to Stabbing damage. See the pic.

>>24157298
28 * 0.3744 = 10 damage.

Waad has 23 Life Points, and Houby has 20. Or should I say, HAD 20.

A roll of 78 means Waad hacked at Houby's right hand. Houby's hand has (20 * 3 * 0.01) = 1 BPP.

1 BPP - 10 damage = FOREVER USELESS.
How will Houby fap now?!

Houby LP: 20 - 1 = 19.

>>24157455
First, the chances of Houby contracting gangrene.
He was struck by a hacking weapon, so there's a chance of him contracting the disease equal to (BPP lost / BPP maximum) * 100%.
That's (1/1) * 100%

Houby has a 100% chance of contracting gangrene from getting his hand severed. Sucks to be him!

Second, let's check for Smiting, in that last picture. The Zweihander is a Large Hacking weapon. It dealt 5% of Houby's LP to him last round (1 of 20 is 5%), so the chances of Houby being smitten are:

5% * 0.5 = 2.5%. We truncate fractions, so that's a base TH of 2.
100 - 2 = TH 98.

Roll a d100! On a 99 or 100, Houby is smitten down, to the ground.

1) Although you're told to truncate fractional values in most cases, this doesn't seem to be the case with the game's COMPLETELY OPTIONAL and UNREQUIRED sexual characteristics.

2) Those numbers were spewed by the FATAL Character Generator program, not by my hand. So the game's own character generator came up with that.
>>
>>24158551
So after that 3d10+15 to see if you passed (against a TH of...I don't know, 25? 25 sounds good), you'd roll 3d10+([14+12]/2) = 3d10+13, and then compare all that other business.

Alright. The Zweihander is 72" long. The fulcrum can be from 5-30, but is at 22. 72" - 22" = 50" of blade and cross-guard.
>Divide this by the foe's fist circumference and multiply this quotient by 2
Alright, fist circumference is...oh, I already posted that here.>>24157699
Fist circumference is equal to the length of the character's foot in inches. Helmin Waad's Foot Size is 9" (check his posted stats if you don't believe me, ctrl+F "foot"), so his fist circumference is 9".

>50" / 9" = 5.555556
>5.55556 x 2 = 11.11111
Truncate this to 11. This is a modifier for Houby. I assume this is positive? A bonus?
>Disarmer has initiative over foe
>modifier "-"
This is true. Houby has initiative over Waad right now. But uh, that's some modifier, huh? Just a negative sign. Don't know what that means.
>+1 for each inch of the weapon of the foe that is perpendicular to its handle
Perpendicular to its handle? Only the cross-guard counts for that, but I don't know how long that is, so I say it counts as zero.

>>24158682
It really isn't. The above attack hit his armor but didn't penetrade. You'd just roll 1d20+3 * modifier and subtract that from the Clamshell Gauntlet's Integrity Points (IP) of 15; see >>24153921
Since the maximum damage you could deal to his plate armor is 7, and the lowest is 1, well. Not as complicated as this disarm. But this too is easy, just finding stuff numbers and doing arithmetic.

So then, putting this all together, we get...

Houby must roll 3d10+15 against his foe's unarmored CA of 11.

Clamshell Gauntlets don't say they do anything to hold your weapon in place, and there's no reason why you'd consider their CA for a disarm attempt, so Houby must roll 3d10+15 against his foe's unarmored CA of 11. Remember that any natural roll of 6 or less is a failure.

If that succeeds, then we Houby rolls 3d10 + 13 average of Hand-Eye and Agility modifiers + 11 modifier for disarmer, again assuming it's positive + 0 SP invested in Disarm skill.

Grand total of 3d10 + 24.

That the example tables go up to 24 makes me thing the +11 is indeed positive.

Considering the results for >49 have us roll to affect either the hand, lower arm, or upper arm, I guess we'd just roll to see which part we hit?

Also, I'm okay with going to Graphic Gore. I feel slighted by this game. First I get a modifier of just "-". Not -0. Not -1. Just "-".
Then the game says "the opponent is damaged." But the opening to Disarm says the opponent in generally unharmed, so I have nothing to go off how badly to damage the opponent, or if armor matters.

Time for your introduction to Graphic Gore.

You know Dark Heresy's critical hits table? Rolemaster's critical hit TABLE table? Riddle of Steel's wounding chart? This is the same thing.

Normally, a natural attack skill check of 25 or higher that ALSO surpasses the target's CA by 3 or more results in Graphic Gore to the part you would have hit.

Graphic Gore can also occur when you Disarm someone really well (apparently) and often occurs when you make a Called Shot to a specific body part.

God himself spent years creating the perfect anus, folding the large and small intestines over a million times to produce the finest anus known to mankind.

> player wants to mess with player who just joined the group

Gentlemen, gentlemen, we have been going about this all wrong. While physical combat is indeed full of signature horrible FATALisms, to experience the true breadth of FATAL fail you need to have a MAGICAL duel. It wasn't the Graphic Gore table that made FATAL infamous.

My brother once suffered a crushed testicle playing ball hockey. He went home and put ice on it, but a few hours later he was shaking and sweating and I had to rush him to the hospital. I guess it can cut off blood circulation and stuff? Or you can just bleed to death maybe (because it's venous blood so the vessel doesn't contract to pinch it off). Anyway, they rushed him into surgery.

Saved his nuts, though.

Dang it Hilary can't you stay out of my fecht threads?

Alright, where were we?
Right, Waad is disarmed!

Now it's Waad's turn in initiative.

We'll assume the sword fell "several feet away" as per the 30-39 result. The >49 result is better, so, presumably it does better.

Waad could move over to his sword and kneel down to pick it up, but...could he do that within 3 seconds? I dunno, that's pushing it. I'll say it takes 2 rounds total to get his sword back. One round to move to it and kneel, one to pick it up and stand up.

What does Waad do? Go for his sword? Brawl? Wrestle?

Why, as a matter of fact, Helmin Waad never goes anywhere without his trusty...

I have no idea what the penalties are for one-handed grappling so I'll get back to you guys in a few minutes. Grappling's actually really dangerous. Look at the suplex's damage. If your foe isn't wearing a helmet you could easily kill a man with a suplex.

Okay. Since I can't find rules directly stating it I will go with my instincts.

Wrestling will occur with both hands. But we don't have two hands anymore so we'll use what we have.

Wrestling is a 3d10 + the average of Strength + Agility. Counting the penalties for a lost hand, this means Waad rolls 3d10 + (22+3)/2 == 3d10 + 12

Houby rolls an opposting Wrestling roll of 3d10 + (9+6)/2 == 3d10 +7

>Wrist lock - Foe's wrist is trapped in an awkward position
I imagine holding a hand with no wrist would be kind of awkward anyway
>and the foe may attempt to escape with a successful Wrestling skill check at TH 13. If failed, then Waad may break Houby's wrist, reducing Hand-Eye Coordination
With THAT hand
>to 30%, as well as administering
Not delivering, administering
>2d6 damage. Otherwise the grappler may continue their submission hold and administer 2d4 subdual damage per round, unless the foe escapes the lock, though the TH increases by 3 per round

So. I'm pretty sure this TH13 Wrestling roll has to happen now. You can't break a dude's wrist through armor in 3 seconds, so I think that has to happen next round. I can't really tell.

Someone roll Houby's Wrestling check! 3d10 + 7, and remember that a natural 6 or lower is an automatic failure anyway.

>>
>>24161672
Well, here's the thing. You could Wrestle, you have an edge in that regard. (Armor doesn't seem to help against it...) Or you could get your sword and wield it one-handed. You CAN use it one-handed; you just take a penalty to your hit rates.

I've done the calculations. Waad can use the sword, albeit ineffectively, with a strength of only 133. Waad has more than that. I can do the other calculations as necessary.

In fact, FATAL's equations here are so bonkers that if you're too weak to effectively use a weapon, your penalty with using it gets LOWER the WEAKER you are. If you need 149 strength and you have 148, you may have a -9 penalty. If you need 149 strength but only have 120, you'd only have a -8 penalty. It's bonkers.

It'd take you a full round to go over and prepare to get the sword though.

Up to you. Seems most of the participants have left for the night.
>>
>>24161751

>New Move
>Though the grappler has never seen or heard of this move before, it has forced the foe into submission at the mercy of the grappler

Breaking free from Waad's wrist lock with a sharp pull of his mace-hand up to the sky, Houby takes two quick steps backwards. He concocts the simplest of plans. Within scarcely two seconds, Waad is coming back for him, reaching out with his good and crippled hands both to apply some dastardly joint lock upon him. The strength of this man gave him surprising speed despite the weight of the full suit of plate mail he wore. His alacrity allowed him to nearly break Houby's wrist just seconds earlier. But Houby was faster this time.

As Waad approached, Houby's arm swung in a windmill from its position high above his head, to down, trailing behind him. He fell with his arm until it completed its arc, the mace head ending up in Waad's most vulnerable spot.

"Deus Galt!"

For a moment, the combatants froze. Laurence Houby on one knee in the field, not far from his severed hand. His left arm protruded straight forward, the mace's head buried in the twisted metal that was moments ago his opponent's codpiece. No thoughts went through Helmin Waad's head, the pain of the sudden strike numbing his senses and halting his brain's activity. Slowly, he staggered backwards. One step. Two steps. A third step was never completed. Waad fell flat onto his back, spread eagle on the ground. He was defeated.
