>Trying a different title format so it stops getting archived under the wrong name.

I return home, quickly. I return the extra supplies I took out of Dad's stash to the pile as I move along.

I check in, and make sure everyone's alright. I see Ilya playing with her puppy, and Rider talking with Sakura and Rin.

Taiga seems out of it, but alright. Caster is much calmer now that her Master's awake and aware.

Ultimately, Saber is the first to notice my return an hour later. "Eh? Where did this box come from?"

She grabs and calmly lifts it, and in a moment of inspiration, I project a second box, identical to the one she grabbed.

My only regret, as she stares frozen at the box in front of her, is that my phone doesn't have a camera on it.

She turns around and sets down the box, and by the time she's turned back I've dismissed my illusion and stood up. "Saber."

"... Shirou. Where did you come from?"

"The Box."

"... Why were you in a box?"

"I have perfected the art of Tactical Espionage." I respond calmly, folding the box up and packing it away while she stares at me blankly. "I just wanted to confirm it's effectiveness before I did any bragging."

"... Did you come all the way home inside a box?" She asks, brow furrowed as she attempts to decipher my technique.

"I had to be sure I wasn't followed."

".... You came all the way from the docks on the other side of town.... across the bridge... in the dark.... while hiding inside a box." She squints as she stares at my face, looking for something I can't perceive. "You did this in a hour and a half?"

"Actually, I've been here monitoring things for an hour." I respond, moving to place the box in the shed.

"You got here that fas- You spent the last hour sneaking around your own house in a cardboard box."

I give her a concerned look, as she stops to stare at me. "Are... are you feeling alright Saber?"

With the same blank stare, she turns and walks back to Caster's room.

Gloating is a bit too out of character, we're pretty near taped magically and we're going to have two separate war councils tomorrow, so we might as well not bother. Let's see if Taiga's alright. Maybe put the tora-shinai in her hands and see if physical exercise helps her cope.

Years of jRPGs has warped my thinking to the point that MP under 75% is near empty. And actually using items is like pulling teeth. I feel completely justified in calling us nearly tapped out.

>>24139132
That was the idea. We need training so that we never see DC 18 when fighting Gil ever again, and Saber's the only person on that level. Since she's too weirded out to provide, the solution is to get a certain someone with a favored weapon and Favored Enemy: Shirou, so that their total bonus is similar to Gil's overall powerlevel.

I take a moment to sit down with Taiga. "How are you feeling?"

"Fine." She answers calmly. She hesitates and looks back at me. "Apparently I was in some kind of danger?"

"Yeah. You... you were kidnapped by a Vampire."

"Huh." There's a long pause. "It's weird. It doesn't bother me, but I think that's because I have a hard time believing it's real." She looks away, out towards the yard. "I mean, it's obviously real. I've seen you do... things. I guess Vampires aren't exactly a huge leap of faith all things considered."

"Yeah. Mages and such try not to advertise their presence, but a good part of why we're still hidden comes from people in general. Dad called it the 'line of sight' problem. People tend to ignore what they don't have to look at."

"I can see how that works." She answers with a sigh. "Honestly, I might be bothered more by all this when it has time to sink in. It's only been a few days since I found out you were trying to fight off an evil Genie with some sort of magic sword."

There's a long moment of silence. "Yeah, I think you should talk to Rin about the detail stuff." I say after a moment. "She's clearly better at explaining things. By a lot."

"... Thanks for saving me." She says after a moment. "Sorry. I just realized I never thanked you. It was probably really hard and dangerous. I think."

"Kinda." I respond, thinking back. "Less of an ordeal than I was afraid of." I smile as I stand up, and turn to her. "Besides, you don't have to worry about thanking me. I mean, we're practically family."

She smiles, and laughs. "Yeah. Looks like I might have to take the blame for your inability to deal with women. I haven't exactly been good at teaching you to say no."

We share a laugh, and I leave her to relax. She might have issues later, but if she isn't panicking now I should let her rest.

With plenty of time left before I need to cook, I decide to....

I walk to Caster's room, and see her getting ready to leave. "Going somewhere?"

"Actually, yes." She responds. "I had a few ideas for possible bases, and I need to scout them."

"I see." I look between her and her Master. "Getting ready to move then?"

"Yes. No offense, but even if we decided to stay allied for some odd reason... I'd rather not have all our assets be in one location." She responds.

"... 'Even if we stayed allied'?"

"... Well, yes. We're still at war here. Even if we're working towards a mutually beneficial goal, only one of us can win and get our wish." She frowns slightly. "You can feel however you want about that, but the bare facts of the situation aren't going to change."

Souchirou-Sensei merely watches the conversation from where he's sitting with what I can only describe as polite interest.

Sadly Lancer doesn't get a route, even if you do temporarily get to use her as your Servant. I haven't played CCC, I just stalked /a/ for a few days. From what I remember, I think after she's your Servant for a bit she fades away, saying that she's either going to Venus to set up her new stage, or she's going to shine brighter than Venus on the stage.
And then Melty brings her back as a Berserker with E- Mad Enhancement for you to kill off. What the hell.

HATE.

SO MUCH HATE.

There'd better be something after CCC, dammit.
>>
"You're still in it for the win then? Despite the fact that the Grail is looking less like a wish granting device and more like a sentient Engine of hate?"

Caster hesitates. "What?"

"... I keep forgetting that I haven't shared every detail or spelled things out for people." I respond after a moment of hesitation. "But yeah, there's a lot of stuff going on that's weird. Starting with the fact that There's more servants than there should be and ending with the fact that Arcueid apparently didn't sense a Vampire like she thought."

Caster stares at me blankly. Souichirou-Sensei finally speaks up. "Your actions and words aren't consistent."

"How so?"

"You're talking about an end to the fighting and drawing lines, signing truces. You don't want the Grail? I thought it could grant any desire?"

"... I can't think of anything I want that I can't do without the Grail." I respond shaking my head. "I never had any desire in the war that wasn't getting the people I care about out alive."

"That's not true."

"You're saying I'm lieing?"

"No, it could be you're unaware of the truth." He responds with the same level tone he has for all his lectures. "The Grail selects the people who get command seals and summon servants. One from each of the founding families and four others, correct?" He looks to both me and Caster for confirmation. "If it's purpose is to grant a wish or serve as the basis for something else, why would it select someone who had no interest in it?"

"... But I don't have an interest in it...."

"Nothing? No great ambition? No regrets? It could be anything. Immortality, returning someone from the dead.... things normally considered impossible."

"... What's your wish then?"

"I don't have one."

"... YOU JUST SAID-"

"That Masters chosen by the Grail would have to have something to draw them. I wasn't chosen by the Grail. I found Caster by circumstance and happened to be in a position to help her."

"... So wait, are you even a Mage?"

"No."
>>
>>24142157

"... And you just accepted her story at face value?"

"It wasn't a lie." He responds simply. "There are ways of telling." He then turns his gaze slightly more towards her. "Her words are inconsistent at times as well."

"Wh-what?"

"You used your magic to drain pieces of energy from crowds of people, so you could win the Grail. But only a tiny fraction of what was available. If all you cared about was victory, why not drain it all?"

"And murder people in droves?"

"If all you cared about was victory, you wouldn't be considering such mercies."

"... Would you advocate something like that?" I ask, uneasily.

"It's Caster's war. I don't have any real interest in it beyond her desire to win. If she didn't care, I wouldn't either. Morals being the reason for discarding a course of action being good or bad depends on your point of view. I'm not desperate enough for victory to consider the action worthwhile. Others may disagree."

I exit the room after informing them that dinner won't be more that a few hours away. Caster follows me out, while Sensei appears to choose to meditate.

I pause as I start to walk past Saber. She turns to look at me from her position at the door. "Something you wanted to talk about, Shirou?"

Neat, corroboration. I bet this winds up like Kojima with Metal Gear though, Fate is too much a sacred cow for its creator to leave it long, even compared to the rest of the Nasuverse.

>>24142382
Personal theory: EMIYA's timeline is one where Rin completely failed to summon a Servant. There was no Archer in the "original" Fifth War, which ended with a mutual KO between a Rin-charged Saber and Basakah. Shirou wished on the Grail to become a hero. The unnamed disaster was brought on to give him the opportunity. His time as a CG has made him forget both facts, so he's unaware that the world was destroyed without its "hero", and that causing his paradox is impossible since he'd have to be in a timeline without Archer for it to happen.

That Urobuchi enough?

Also I think Arthur was originally male, and won the 4th war outright. He wished for someone to take his place and was replaced in history by his female self.

"Werewolves. One of the Nasuverse's most unknown and dangerous threats. Little is known about them, and it was only recently that information of the cause of their creation was found in the Sea of Extasy. They are formed when one of the Nasuverse's most reliable rituals goes horribly awry."

"The Sea of Extasy, realizing the damage caused by incorrectly performing this ritual, seeks to rectify it's mistake by telling young aspiring magi how to prevent WOLVS from spreading through awkwardly-made mana transfers."

That weird enough, or is it too stupid? Either way I'm done for the night, hope we don't get killed in the meantime.

"Yeah." I answer, turning to her. "I should apologize for the box thing earlier."

She lets out a relieved sigh. "That was a joke then? Good, I was beginning to fear for your sanity."

"Wait, what?"

"Sneaking all the way home and lurking around the house in a box."

"... No, I totally did that. I was apologizing for not explaining myself and having a laugh at your expense."

She blinks, and then looks at me. "... Then why? To what purpose did you hide in the box?"

"I was trying to improve my stealth skills. You weren't there for it, but there's been a few times where I've stared death or possible humiliation in the eye over not being able to move quietly."

"So you used a cardboard box?"

"Think about it, they're everywhere. They're convenient. The fold away when you aren't using them. They can be recycled or burned for warmth. They're so useful they're everywhere."

"... I honestly can't tell if this is brilliant or idiotic." She responds with a furrowed brow.

"Actually, it's both. The idea of seriously using a box for stealth purposes tends to work mostly because everyone knows that nobody's dumb enough to try it." I smile and hook a thumb toward myself. "I, however, am EXACTLY that stupid. And they'll never see it coming."

She stares at me for a long time. "Are you feeling alright?"

"I honestly have no idea. It's possible the stress has driven me completely insane." I sigh. "Setting aside the box conversation though, I wanted to talk to you about something more serious."

She nods, expression becoming more businesslike. "Alright. Go ahead."

"I can't form a contract with you, for whatever reason. Caster's almost ready to sever her connection with you now that Sensei's feeling better." I hesitate. "I guess I wanted to know if you had any preference for who became your Master."

She thinks about it long and hard for a minute before turning to me. "Rin. If Sakura's taking back Rider....."

"Not Ilya?"
>>
>>24143118

"She's the only one who could support Berserker if she came back, plus Rin's less likely to need me to babysit her in Combat. Nothing against Ilya, but...." She sighs. "Out of everyone I think Rin's the one who's the closest and the most loyal to you, with the possible exception of me." She hesitates as I raise an eyebrow. "I mean in a military context. Despite us not having a contract I still consider you my Master. She's the one in love with you."

"... Wasn't insinuating anything like that, Miss-quick-to-deny-everything." She blushes slightly and turns away angrily. "I was wondering what you meant by 'most loyal'."

".... Ilya and Rider have both expressed a desire for a wish, even if you don't." She turns to me. "That and the way Sakura looks at people when she thinks nobody can see. She doesn't have the experience I do, but she's clearly measuring people like opponents for some reason. Other than Caster's Master, you might very well be the only person here who doesn't desire a wish from the Grail."

As she says that, I think back to what Souichirou-Sensei said. Do I have a wish? Some desire I haven't acknowledged? Is that why the Grail chose me?

Saber gives me a concerned look. "Shirou? Is something wrong?"

"Eh? Oh no, nothing. Just got lost in thought for a moment there."

"... I know you think most of these people friends and allies, but are you sure you aren't too trusting?" She gently places a hand on my arm. "Your openness, honesty, and trust are traits to be admired.... but in a situation like this they might get you killed."

Seriously, you'd think a magical ritual of this magnitude would have some sort of protocol in place to deal with someone mucking with it. "Oh, and the Sakura thing? I've got a sneaking suspicion thats not entirely grail-war related, but keep that to yourself for now, I'm still gathering intel."

"Honestly, I'm not sure I can change right now. I'm mostly what's holding this peace together, and if I suddenly started acting different who knows what sort of paranoid chain reaction that might set off." I sigh. "Plus, I get the feeling the Sakura thing might not be entirely Grail War related. I think she's worried everyone here might be a different kind of competition."

"What would- Oh." She says, comprehending. "I'm beginning to wonder if we're the only ones not preoccupied with some sort of romantic subtext."

"I'm starting to be distracted by it because everyone else is distracted by it." I sigh. "Especially since everyone seems to be aimed at me."

Saber smiles. "Yes, poor Shirou. Surrounded by people who care."

"... I'm actually really worried about this. I mean, picking one of them means not picking the rest, which means a lot of people get hurt."

She laughs. "God, but nothing bothers you more than having people care." She shakes her head. "Well at least you don't have to worry about me seducing you."

"... Really?"

"You sound disappointed."

"No, it's not that, just...."

She sighs. "So I can die sometime in the next week, and drive you into the arms of a girl forever haunted by being your second favorite?"

"... That was dark...."

"Honestly, I'm trying not to think of it. Whatever time we might have would be tainted by that though."

She sounds... almost scared.

>>
>>24143489
Actually it is.

An obscure, outdated word, but legitimate english. It's in the 2x10^46 legitimate English constructions.
>>
>>24143192

Not really. To understand how wizards in the Nasuverse work you have to understand that they dont count themselves them as "human".
They don`t see themselves as part of humanity so what happens to humans from a magi point of view is complety uninteresting as long as the Church doesn`t give you flack about it and to prevent that regions usually have an overseer who is either a magus or a church agent and keeps things from escalating simply because its a bother to deal with the aftermath.

Wizards like Kerry or Shirou who actually care about other humans due to their upbringing are very rare in the Nasuverse.
>>
>>24143547
Also Rin, as much as she WANTS to be the distant and uncaring Magus, she's really not very good at it. She has too many humans that she cares about.

"What do you mean?"

"I mean there's a lot of stuff that seems Weird. Zouken seemed suspicious of it when we talked, Caster says she unable to feel or find wherever it is, Avenger and Gilgamesh are running around....."

"That is odd."

"And then there's what happened the last time with Kiritsugu. He apparently really wanted that wish from all the evidence I had, but then at the last second something changed his mind. I mean... after all he did and was apparently willing to do, SOMETHING about the situation scared him off."

Saber's quiet for a long moment. "... That's a good point. Even if you took the most harsh unforgiving views...."

"Yeah, it would only make it worse." I respond, trying not to wince. "I mean, no matter how evil he might seem, it was too evil by his standards."

Saber shakes her head. "Well, I suppose we'll have to see. Maybe he was wrong, or what happened last time was a freak occurrence."

"Maybe. I think it wouldn't be unreasonable to try and call for a ceasefire until we know we aren't fighting for the privilege to unleash Satan on the world or something."

Saber nods. "Yes. I'd certainly like to know as well...."

She leans against the wall, deep in thought.

Well, if talking to Sakura is the dominant choice right now, it's only a matter of what topic to discuss with her (and Rider too if it comes to that.)

Topics for consideration:
>Re-establish contract between Rider and Sakura.
>Talk about Shinji's surprising change of heart during the vampire hunt.
>And since she is the unspoken master of the house when Shirou is gone, ask how our unconscious guest (Sacchin) is doing. Include that we may be able to send her on her merry way since the vampire threat is eliminated.

I go to speak to Sakura, and catch my reflection in the window on the way by. For a second I almost think I see a mad grin across my face, but a quick glance confirms I was only seeing things.

"Sempai?" She asks when I walk in the room.

"Hey. You have a minute?"

"... Yeah, of course." She answers, surprised. "What's going on?"

"Just wanted to talk about some stuff. I know you and Rin were going to switch Rider back to being your servant."

She nods. "We were going to have Caster sever the link when she got back from running errands." She hesitates. "Or I guess you could do it too, if you could make that one knife." She tilts her head slightly. "I didn't really understand when Nee-san explained how that works."

"If I see anything that falls under the broad category of 'sword' I can copy it. My copies aren't as good, but they're better than what most people can do. Also certain magical effects don't stop happening. If a sword had a certain magic effect, so will mine."

"Huh. So you can only make swords?"

"Kinda. I can make other stuff, lances, axes, shields even. It's just the farther they are from 'sword' the harder they are to project."

"So how come the swords don't just pile up?"

"They aren't real swords. They're more like a really good illusion."

".... I think you lost me, Sempai." She says with an uneasy smile and a slightly furrowed brow.

"It's like an illusion so good the world thinks it's real. And because the world says it should work, it does. Even though it isn't real." I respond. "But in order to maintain it I have to remember every single part of the sword and how it fits together."

"... Huh. So why swords?"

"... I have no idea. Apparently my element is 'sword' but I'm not sure if that's the cause."

"... How can your element be 'sword' I thought it was stuff like fire and water."

"... Yeah, I have no idea. You should ask Rin, since she actually knows a lot more of the academic side to magic."
>>
>>24144586

"Alright." She says, with obviously forced cheer over her confusion. "Anything else?"

"Yeah. When we encountered Shinji during the Vampire hunt, he seemed to have a change of heart." I answer. "It wasn't quite altruistic, but he seemed to at least realize his situation was his own fault and didn't want to drag everybody else down."

Sakura's face becomes unreadable. "What does that mean?"

"I don't know. It's a bit optimistic to say that he's trying to be a better person, but he kinda moved in that direction. By a few inches." I sigh. "Still more than I was expecting."

".... So.... what, you're going to try and save him or something?"

"I don't know. I'm not sure I feel right about abandoning him if there's something in there worth redeeming." As I say the words, I realize that Sakura didn't really sound hopeful. "... Hey Sakura, is there something you want to talk about?"

"Eh?" She jumps slightly, and starts blushing heavily. "N-no, nothing like that. I.. I just..."

She never quite manages to tell me what she was 'just' doing as she flees the room.

I feel like at some point we should mention to Ilya (and possibly everyone else) that apparently Gil/Avenger neither killed nor captured Berzerker.

Also, I'm pretty sure the "vampire" Arc is looking for is actually either the Grail or Angry Mandude. I can't remember the exact words she used to describe what vampires felt like, but the abomination that is all the world's evil seemed to fit.

The PTSD whil having a flashback

The fact he may be less-than-human or a demon

The history of Kotomine and the Grail War orphans.

Apologies. I seem to have misquoted.

It was actually "fire and darkness."

>The plan could be done simply if we chose to simple plunge the city in to fire and darkness. Take one of the ley lines and cause and earthquake down the coast. Harvest the prana from the sacrifice. Instead, we chose the hard way. The way of minimal deaths, of the least collateral damage. Avenger had me convinced that it was the best way even.

Wandering around, I spot Rider. She turn to me. "Did you really sneak home in a cardboard box?"

"Of course."

"Why?"

"A crate made of wood or metal would have been too conspicuous."

"... Do you give everyone the same non-answers to direct questions?"

"Maybe. To be honest, I don't really pay attention to what I say."

Rider's ability to stare at me blankly when I can only see half her face is astounding. I'm almost tempted to ask how she does it. Before I can however, she talks first. "So did you come find me for a reason?"

"Kinda. Sakura just ran off flustered, I was wondering if you had any idea why."

"Depends. What were you talking about?"

"At that exact moment? About how Shinji seemed to be moving in the vague direction of being a decent person."

"Huh. He's got a long way to go before then."

"Well yeah, but if there's a small bit that could be redeemed I don't feel comfortable throwing him under the bus."

"I would. He had a chance, and used it to be a douchebag. I'd rather his 'second' chance go to someone who hadn't had one."

"... Kinda harsh."

"There's a lot of people who only realize the error of their ways when they get the same treatment they've been dishing out. If they seriously fail to understand the pain of those they trod over with out being pushed underfoot, they aren't the sort to really remember the lessons they learn down there." She frowns. "Then again, I might be slightly biased."

"... So how do you think Sakura would feel?"
>>
>>24160548

"I don't know, I can try talking to her about it." She answers with a shrug. "I can see where she might have mixed feelings though. She didn't really like being a Matou, and no matter how large or small the role he played she might see him as one of her tormentors. On the other hand, not everything he did to her was cruel and evil even if she saw it that way. Or at least she saw his intentions lean that way, if not his actions."

"Wow." I run a hand through my hair, reflecting. "I don't know what to say. I mean, I knew it wasn't exactly a happy home...."

"You were unaware of -exactly- how bad it was." Rider returns, and smiles slightly. "She's like you. She does a very good job of hiding her discomfort and pain from people she cares about. I suspect for the same reasons."

"What? I just really don't see why someone should get worked up over m-" Rider's words suddenly hit me like a brick. I turn, looking to where Sakura-

Rider's hand catches my shoulder. "I know your 'reckless heroism' gland is probably freaking out right now, but I think you should give her some space. Calm down a little before you talk to her."

"But-"

"You make incredibly stupid decisions when you're emotional. At least take a deep breath before you go."

I close my eyes, letting out a sigh and trying to relive the tension before I-

"I think you're right. Maybe I'll talk to her after dinner."

Rider nods. "Alright. So what now, you off to cook?"

"I have a little time before I have to." I respond, looking out at the shed. "I think I'm going to go and work on the bike." I notice Rider perk up at its mention. "Do you want to come help?"

"Sure." She responds, a little too casually.

We walk out to the shed, and I spy a box with the dealer's logo on it. Apparently Saber had to sign for it while I was out. I idly wonder how long it's been there.

A lot of the work is fairly simple, unbolting a thing that's there and hooking a new one in place. A few pieces seem to require a bit more careful adjustments, making sure it's only -this- tight and no more or less than that.

With Rider's help, the work goes rather quickly. She spends the entire time smiling slightly. "Do you like working on stuff?"

"Kinda. Not in general, and not even most things like this. It's like.... you know how when you look at a horse, sometimes you can just tell it's a runner? While some are a good pack animal, some are as fast and graceful as the wind? This bike was well made."

"Yeah, Saber said that Servants get some sort of vague awareness of the age they're summoned to."

"It's not that. I can just tell. This is a bike meant to go FAST." She smiles. "Maybe part of the is being summoned as Rider. I'm actually quivering with anticipation." She looks at me as we lift it, and set it up out of the way. "I know you said you didn't know who you were going to give it to, but could I take it for a ride?"

"Sorry."

"Shirou, I've spent the last twenty minutes fixing this thing up. Don't get a girl in the mood and walk away."

"What?" I respond, looking at her. I'm honestly not sure if she meant what she said, or what it sounded like. "No, I'm not denying you to be mean." I reach down and show her. "The timing chain was snapped. without the, the bike literally will not go. It's how the power goes to the wheels."
>>
>>24161491

Rider stares at me, and then at the bike. "You knew this? You knew all along?"

"That the bike wasn't a hundred percent fixable at this point? Yes." I look at her, and apologetically pat her on the back. "I didn't realize you'd be this upset over it though. If I knew you were expecting an immediate payoff, I would've-"

"No, it's alright." She says, letting out a sigh. "I should've known better, getting my hopes up."

She leaves the shed, leaving me feeling slightly guilty. I start to leave in the direction of the kitchen, but I see Rin spot me and making a beeline towards the shed as I exit.

"Rin?"

"Shirou." She greets as she walks up, before hesitating. "Why were you and Rider in the shed?"

"Oh. I was just working on the bike."

".... Bike?" She steps past me and looks in the shed. "Eh? Since when do you have a motorcycle?"

"Since Gilgamesh threw it at me." She does a double take. "Well technically he threw it after he broke it, in the general direction of where I was standing.... and didn't care that I laid claim to his cast-off."

"When was this?"

"That night at the Church." I snap my fingers. "Right after you were kidnapped by Archer. I thought you already knew."

"... When I wasn't here for it?"

"Well everyone else has seen it since. I mean, I never went out of my way to talk about it, but I'm surprised you didn't know."

".... Alright, well...." She says, trying to change the topic. "Did you say something to Sakura?"

"... Kinda. Why?"

"She locked herself in her room for a little earlier. I got her to talk and she just went to start dinner a minute ago...."

"Dammit, I was going to cook." I say, looking towards the kitchen.

"Shirou?" Rin asks, tugging on my sleeve. "Are you alright?"

"Fine, why?"

"Because every time someone else offers to cook you... well, you have a little moment."

"Well it's my house. My house, my kitchen. You're all guests, and besides: I'm used to doing everything. It's really weird not doing everything."

"Even though we want to help." She stares at me concerned for a minute, before she starts cracking up.

"What?"

"I wonder if Saber's right. Are you allergic to sympathy or something?"

"What? No." I shake my head. "It just bugs me when people get worked up about stuff that doesn't matter. It's not the end of the world when something bad happens to me."

"About what?"

"About you. It's like you honestly don't care what happens to yourself."

"I care. I just care about you more."

"And Sakura more, and Rider more, and Saber and Taiga more...." She says, staring at me, before shaking her head. "Sometimes I really just don't understand what's going through your head."

If we want to make Shirou the strongest Shirou possible magically we have to make him face the result of following Kiritsugu's ideals and decide that they're worth following anyway. That and Archer points nets us UBW.

However, if we want to get Shirou's best ending, we have to make our Shirou give up those ideals. The best way I can think of doing that is to have his friends realize that his worldview is distorted and pull an intervention on him. If Saber starts talking about the fire, one of our route heroines will start putting the pieces together. Paradoxically the way to accelerate that is to make them more worried about Shirou. We can pull that off by having Shirou come out and say "I don't care about myself" or come within a hair's breadth of saying so.
>>
>>24162966

>>

I sigh. "Rin... A week ago I was a mostly-normal high school student who's biggest worry was making sure Taiga didn't starve to death. In the space of the last week I've traded blows with legendary heroes, powerful Magi, and a freaking vampire. Discovered some of my Father's dark secrets, learned projection magic, and just today I may have discovered a way to move undetected by Servants."

She looks at me, surprised while i take a breath and continue.

"On top of that, I apparently have somewhere between two and six women romantically interested in me who span from totally normal people to powerful magi and semi-divine spiritual being manifested by the grail." I take her hand, looking her in the eye. "I admit my perspective might be distorted as hell, but all things considered I think I'm doing alright."

She stares at me for a long time before sighing. "Yeah. Maybe you're right. I mean, you're acting weird but how much of that is you getting thrown by all that's happening?"

"Exactly." I say with a smile. "I'm mostly reacting to everything that's happened so far. I'm not saying I'm 100% perfectly fine, but this isn't exactly a fair measurement of how I am normally."

She smiles back. "Yeah. Honestly though, I don't get something. Your Dad never explained any of this?"

"Not really. I think he thought I'd be happier if I was never a mage. He left some information where I could find it if I needed it, but...."

"Wanting to keep you uninvolved." Rin shakes her head. "Do you know how unusual that is for a Mage?"

"What?"

"Not passing that stuff along. I mean, that's what you're expected to do. You pick an heir, pass along everything, all your knowledge and eventually the magic crest." She rolls up her sleeve and puts a small amount of energy into it, and I see little lines light up slightly along her arm. "I'm supposed to too. If I don't put that first, we could loose hundreds of years of knowledge and magecraft skill. Your Dad... he put being a father first."
>>
>>24163207

".... Does that upset you?"

"No. I don't think so, just...." She sighs, looking away. "It's weird. Mages are supposed to do and be all of these things, but everything you say and do feels like you're running in the opposite direction. And right when I've convinced myself that you're insane, or that you're an idiot, you do something that should be impossible. Or you say something brilliant and insightful."

"Spooky Magic." I comment waggling my fingers.

"... Yeah." She turns to me, exasperated. "Exactly. I have no idea how you do that."

"Well.... I have to look at magic differently. I mean, for one I'm really specialized. You can do everything and be amazing at it. I can only do one thing, and it's not really that useful on the whole."

"You can project things way more powerful than makes any sense."

"Well yeah, but what use does that have in day to day life? You could probably use magic to clean the house. What am I supposed to do? Summon freaking Excalibur and smite the dust into oblivion?" I pantomime flailing a sword around at random while Rin laughs at me.

"I guess you're right. I can kinda see where your Father was coming from. Being a Mage is hard. He couldn't pass on the crest, so he probably wanted to make sure it was really what you wanted."

"Yeah. I never thought he was dumb, but he was obviously a lot smarter than I gave him credit for."

"Still, it's kinda fun, right?" She says with a smile. "Learning new things, all this crazy war stuff. It's dangerous, but also kinda exciting."

Something about what she said makes me feel... uncomfortable.

She notices before I can hide it completely. ".... Shirou? Is something wrong?"

"Huh? No, nothing. Of course not." I answer, smiling and giving her hand a squeeze.

She frowns at me, concerned. Dammit.

"I didn't mean the war specifically." She says, looking at me. "There are good things happening too. Sakura's here, and she's actually happy. We got to actually know each other, and we both made some new friends."

"Yeah, and out there somewhere Zouken, Archer, Avenger and Gilgamesh are plotting to rip it all away."

"... So you haven't enjoyed any of this? Meeting Saber, fixing the bike with Rider?"

"I'm not saying I haven't enjoyed it, I'm just very aware of the greater context. Always. And that bike's already set me on fire once."

"That's not wha- Wait, the bike-" She stops, suddenly angry. "Stop trying to distract me!"

"I'm not. I just don't understand what you're on about."

"When I'm in the kitchen." I answer dryly.

She blinks, confused, and then her face begins to shift back to anger when I put a finger on her lips to shush her.

"Listen. Alright?" I sigh. "I like cooking. Well, I don't so much like 'cooking' as it is everything else. I like taking care of the people I care about. I like making sure everyone's happy. I LIKE worrying because it means I have something worth worrying about." I sigh, fighting down memories of smoke as I try to relax. "I know you care, that you want me to be happy. But I don't need to do something stupid and 'fun' to be happy. I'm just happy when everyone else is safe and happy."

She stares at me for a long moment. "You're hiding something."

"... No, no I'm not." I respond. "Well, maybe there's stuff I haven't talked about, but I'm not actively trying to deceive you...."

She frowns, and looks away, sighing. "You mean it, but there's something else."

"What do you mean?"

"I don't know. I just... I feel like there's something I'm missing. Like there's something about you or in your life that would explain it that I'm not seeing. Maybe you don't see it either, or you just don't realize it's there."

".... I don't understand."

".... Yeah, I don't either. Just promise me something? If something bothers you, or something comes up, talk to me. Talk to us. You have a bad habit of trying to take everything on yourself. Just because you want to deal with it doesn't mean we can't help."

"... I'll try. Not sure what else I can say."

"For bothering you like that. I wish I knew what it was that's bugging you, or whatever's apparently wrong with me."

"It's alright. I mean, there's worse things to be than too nice." She answers with a smile. "Now what? off to invade the kitchen? Reclaim your rightful place in the world?"

"... Actually, I think I'm going to go for a walk, clear my head a little bit." I say, and her smile fades a little. "I'm not going to do anything crazy. I just have a lot to think about, wanted to get some fresh air."

She nods. "Take Rider with you, just in case."

"... Yeah, alright."

I step into the living room and look at Sakura in the kitchen. She notices me out of the corner of her eye and smiles. "Sempai. Sorry, I know you were going to cook, but-"

"It's fine." I respond with a wave. "You like to contribute and I wanted to clear my head anyway."

She blinks. "Are you alright?"

"Fine. I just wanted to get some fresh air." She continues looking concerned. "I'm taking Rider with me, just in case something happens. I doubt it, but...."

"Alright." She smiles, clearly relaxing again. "Don't take too long, dinner will be ready in a half hour."

I grab my coat from the closet, and step outside into the night air.
>>
>>24164166

"So, are you really planning something crazy?" Rider asks. "I'm not going to stop you, I just wanted to know in advance."

"Alright. Well, I'm here if something happens. Or you want to talk. Or if you decide you want to break out some handcuffs and do something ki-"

"Noted, thanks." I respond with an exasperated sigh.

She laughs. "I was just kidding. You haven't exactly won me over completely." She nudges me slightly. "Seriously, I'll leave you alone. Just let me know if you need something." laughing, she vanishes from sight while I shake my head.

I wander to the market, taking in the sights and smells. It's amazing how much things change around town as we head into evening, people headed home and Shops thinking about closing.

I walk into the market, and something gets my attention a smell from a nearby restaurant, someone throwing out charred and burnt pork.

The smell of burning....

"Hey kid, what're you doing out this late?" a familiar voice comments. I swallow my nausea and turn to him.

"Lancer. I just wanted to get some fresh air."

"Feeling sick?" He asks concerned. "You seem a little out of it."

"No, nothing like that." I answer, shaking my head. "I just wanted some time to think." I glance at the bags he's holding. "You went to a pharmacy?"

"Yeah, my Master, well... you saw her."

"I thought Rin healed her?"

"She did, the one wound she had on her side." He responds. "She's got some kind of weird illness that's been bothering her since she got here. One of her contacts attempted to poison her and take me right after she arrived in town. I saved her from the attack, but whatever he tried to use is still bothering her."

"That's why she's so paranoid? She thinks the competition got to them or something?"

"Basically. That Priest agreed to help, but...." He shrugs. "He hasn't said or done anything untoward and he looks to be taking his neutrality serious. I just get a weird vibe off of him. Like he's checking her out or something, but he's not looking at her tits. Like there's something else he's getting his kicks on and I can't place it."

"He bothers you?"

"Yeah. I don't know what it is, but he just rubs me the wrong way." He shakes his head. "But I'm not here to talk about my problems, and you're already gonna come talk tomorrow about the Grail stuff."

"Yeah, maybe I'll just get back to my walk."

"You want to talk about it?"

"Talk about what?"

"Alright. Mind some privacy?" He asks, looking at a point about a foot behind me and to the left.

"I'm here in case he's in danger." Rider's voice replies.

"Well I'm not going to kill him over coffee." Lancer responds. Then he sighs. "Alright, I swear upon my honor and pride as a Knight of Erin that I'll do what I can to ensure he comes to know harm while we speak. Will that satisfy you?"

".... Alright. I'll give you your privacy." She responds. "I'm not going to stray too far though."

"Daddy never taught you?"

"Well I was twelve when he died."

"And we're just off to a roaring start then, aren't we?" Lancer pinching the bridge of his nose.

"You didn't know." I respond with a sigh.

"Yeah, no, this is good. I want to see how many times in one conversation I can kick myself in the tonsils." He responds with a sarcastic smile. "Seriously though, what's up?"

"Well... I have multiple girls interested in me, and I'm not really sure how to deal with that."

"Have you tried using your dick?" He asks as the waitress walks away from delivering our coffee. I see her hesitate before apparently deciding that nobody has that little tact.

I know better. "... What? Seriously?"

"Seems obvious to me." He takes a sip of coffee. "I mean, it's a mutual interest, right? You aren't holding out for someone else?"

"No... I mean, if I was it would probably be one of them. It's just.... well for one, multiple women seems like it would be easy to screw up, and I'm not sure they'd be down for that."

"Oh, you mean multiple RELATIONSHIPS." He takes another sip of coffee. "Well, no matter what route you go, don't piss them off."

"Wasn't planning on it." I respond dryly.

"Just saying. 'Hell hath no fury' isn't a joke. Pissing off a woman is pretty much how my life ended up coming to such a horrible flaming end."

"And your first piece of advice is to give them the dick."

"I never said I was good with women. Actually, that part was probably the only thing I was really good with in that regard."

"... The sad part is that you're already giving better advice than the last two people I've talked with."

"What happened there?"

"One suggested asserting my dominance, and the other thought I was gay."

"Nah, you spend way too much time being whipped for that to be the case." He smiles roguishly "Hold on, you're that whipped and you're not getting any? Damn son, it's a good thing you knew to get help."
>>
>>24164951

"I could leave. Right now." I respond, scooting back.

"Calm down, just having a laugh." He shakes his head. "Alright, first of all, you need to know what you're getting into. Make sure they know and you know what's up. You don't have to be blunt, but make sure everyone's on the same page. If you just want to fuck, say that. If you want to date, or date more than one, be honest. If you're considering marriage then go there. If you decide you want to change where you're at, talk about it." He sips his coffee. "Honesty. Honesty and communication. Never sneak anything around that and you'll be good."

"That's it?"

"Well.... Yes and no. That's how relationships work. Even if you're 'dominate' in the relationship, you want to make sure they're happy enough to not stab you to death in your sleep." He looks thoughtful. "Whenever I was with more than one, I was either in a position where it was suggested to me, or all parties involved didn't care. You're somewhere more delicate than that."

"Yeah, I'd say so. Polygamy isn't exactly looked upon fondly for the most part."

".... What a boring world it's become." He shakes his head. "Listen, don't care what anyone else says. If you're happy and whatever girls or guys you're with are happy, fuck everyone else." He hesitates, thoughtful. "Actually, don't fuck everyone else. I suspect cheating is frowned upon too."

"Well... yeah. Even if I DID want to go there... you can't say that and not look like a creep."

"What? 'I want to fuck you all so stop acting awkward' isn't a winning move?" For a second I think he's serious, and then he laughs. "Yeah, no. If they think you're in it for the fun they won't go for it seriously. Well if you can't say it, maybe someone else can? Hell, I could if it were open. Just let me know, I won't even blackmail you for my personal amusement over it."

"Alright, I think that's enough of that talk for now." I say after a minute of hard silence.

"Fair enough. Want to talk about your sick episode outside?"

"... Yeah, I don't really know what that was."

"I have a guess, but I'm going to need your complete honesty no matter how weird my questions are."

"... Alright."

"Did you see it first, or did you smell it?"

"... Smelled."

"Do you cook with Pork often?"

"... No, not really."

"Don't like the taste?"

"It's not that, I just... I just don't eat a lot of pork."

"What's the earliest thing you remember?"

"... Today?"

"Ever."

"... Seeing my Dad's face."

"... Alright." He sighs. "Have you ever seen dead people?"

"Like a corpse?"

"Yes."

"... Yeah."

"..... There was a large fire across town about a Decade ago, right? I remember the priest saying some-" I choke down the bile. "Yeah, there it is." He reaches over, and grabs my shoulder, hard. "Focus. Find something to grab and focus on the here and now."

I take a deep breath. "What?"

"Smell can trigger memories. Especially really strong or repressed ones. You lied about your first memory, didn't you?"

I don't say anything. I can't say anything.

"Yeah, I thought so. Here's something not many people know: Humans and pigs have similar fat placement and muscle structure, even if the shapes are different. Cooked pig smells about the same as cooked people." He smiles, giving me a small pat on the shoulder. "You're not the first person to get freaked out by it. First time I smelled it, I thought 'that smells delicious' right before I saw what I was smelling. didn't puke, but couldn't eat pork for a week afterwards."

I take a few deep breaths as I try to calm down. "Well. That was...."

"Yeah." He frowns. "Have you ever talked to anybody about it? Your Dad even?"

"... No, not really. I can't even remember anything that happened before then." I shake my head. "I just... tried to move on."

Lancer sighs. "Don't we all."

"So repressed memories. Any advice there?"

"What, drawing them out?" He responds, surprised. "Uh... expose yourself to proper stimulus?"

"Which would be?"

"Set yourself on fire? You could probably learn a lot from that." He says, uncertainly. "Probably the most chance for a vivid flashback. Honestly though, I wouldn't recommend trying to power through it, generally speaking, your mind suppresses stuff like that on purpose. You know you can't handle it on some level, so you just shut it out."

".... But what if I want to be better?"

"Being better means getting better. And getting better can be long and slow. Here's the real question though: Do you want to be better because you want to be better? Or do you want it so people don't worry about you?"

I hesitate. "I... I don't know."

"That's probably the best place to start then." He looks thoughtful. "Why do you have such a low sense of self worth?"

"Huh?" I look at him, surprised.

"You heard me. The girl, what's her name... Sakura? She does it too. She draws attention away from herself, doesn't like everybody paying excessive attention to her. She's also got reasons, and issues. She was apparently abused in more ways than one and spent most of her life sad or terrified." He finishes off his coffee with a low pull. "You though? You've got it pretty good other than the fire thing. You've got multiple women on the line, you've got your own house, you've got good grades according to that one woman..."

"Taiga?"

"Yeah, that's the one." He nods as he continues. "I mean, your parents are gone and there was that fire thing..... but nothing that points to why you would hate yourself that I know of. Hell, you're kinda awesome by most standards. Here's something I noticed: I've never seen you smile. Not once."

"I've smiled." I answer, surprised.
>>

>>

"Not a real smile. Not a happy one. They're always the sort of tired, plastered on fake ones you wear to get people to look away. And when they do you stop. Like flicking off a light-switch."

I stare, not sure how to take that. I don't smile?

My phone rings. "Emiya."

"Hey." Taiga says. "Dinners almost ready. You should probably head back if you want to eat."

"Yeah, alright." I says, rubbing my temple. "I think I'm done anyway."

I look up and see Lancer already standing. "I need to be heading back too." I nod, standing up as well. As I turn to the door.... "Hey kid?"

"Yeah?"

"If you ever need someone to talk to, unbiased? Feel free to call or something."

"... Thanks Lancer."

"No problem." He says with a wave as he walks off.

I realize a moment later that he left me with the bill, and I throw some money of the table with a bit more irritation than was warranted.

"I'll scream rape. Don't think I won't."

"Oh I could make you like it..." She whispers in my ear. "... When I get tired of hearing you cry." She finishes as her arms wrap around me from behind. She hesitates after a second. "Shirou? Are you alright?"

".... I'm not sure actually." She lets go and I turn to her as she walks beside me. "I have a question, might sound weird."

"And?"

"Do I not smile?"

She stares at me blankly before gesturing to her blindfold like 'are you kidding me'. She then sighs. "Honestly, no. I just assumed you were more the stoic, serious type. You don't really joke that much except for with me either, but I'm pretty sure that's mostly us dodging our respective issues and sexual tension." she looks at me with a frown. "Why, should you be smiling?"

"... I don't know. I've never thought about it." I respond. "I mean, it's not the sort of thing you'd really notice unless someone points it out."

"I think you'd notice if you weren't happy." She quips. I don't say anything. "... Shirou?"

"If we just look at the last few weeks, there's a lot of reasons not to be happy. A lot of stress and worry." I shake my head. "I didn't do much laughing and joking around before all this either. I mean, with Issei just kinda chatting on our way from one thing to another occasionally...."

"Mmmm..." She looks at me. "I hate to interrupt your brooding, but you had an old bicycle in the shed. We couldn't use the chain off that?"

"It's shaped different, I already looked. Also built for a much smaller stress tolerance. I'd try and fix the old chain, but I don't have it. It's just gone."

".... Well damn. What about projecting it?"

"And risk losing focus at high speed in a corner or something?"

"An excellent point." She sighs. "You're not really distracted are you? You actually need the heart-to-heart?"
>>
>>24165750

"... If you don't want to talk...."

"No, I asked, even if I wasn't sure what I was getting into." Somehow her brush doesn't feel like she means it. "So what, you aren't happy?"

"I have no idea. I mean, I kinda figured I was because I didn't see myself as depressed or anything. But first Rin, then Lancer...."

"What's the saying? 'If one person says you're an ass'?"

"Basically." I sigh. "I don't really bother worrying about myself because I care more about my friends. Is that why I didn't notice? Or maybe a symptom of whatever problem I have?"

"Here's how I see it. You're alive?"

"For the moment."

"You're healthy?"

"Discounting the whole thing with my soul, yes."

"Uncomfortable with talking about your feelings and personal problems?"

"... Well, yeah. Obviously."

"Then the answer is clear: Blindly throw yourself at the problems presented in the war and among your friends and completely ignore your mounting pile of problems!" She gestures ahead like she's declaring 'behold' and showing off some grand design.

"... And that'll help?"

"If you're only happy when you're fretting over other people, then by all means, fret. It makes you happy and certainly isn't hurting anyone."

"... I actually have no idea if this is serious or good advice."

"Well, it's what I'm doing so I can't really offer anything else without being a hypocrite." She responds with a shrug as she fades away.

I let out a sigh, and look down the road. Just a few blocks from home. Nothing to look forward to but dinner.
