The fun we shall have.

The year is 2016.

On Christmas of last year the World: R2 was released to mixed reviews. The combat system and impressive graphics were hailed as a massive improvement over the previous model, but there was some dissatisfaction over the inability to transfer character data from the World R1. Of course that did not particularly matter to you.

You are a government agent, among the best of the best, invited in straight out of college and on the fast track to the top. Despite being effeminate looking, or perhaps because of it, you worked harder than every other agent and were thus not surprised when you were called into the director’s office to receive special assignment. You took a seat in front of his desk and waited for the grizzled old man to start talking first.

“What do you know about the MMORPG, ‘The World’?” He asks causing you to furrow your brow in confusion.

You remember your sister was into it, that and k-pop idols who she constantly told her friends she “shipped” with you. You give a shake of your head in response.

“A few years ago there was a situation in the game known as ‘The World’. Players were supposedly being sent into comas from playing and CC Corp was being very hush hush about the whole thing. Based on information gathered afterwards, the incident was caused due to some incident regarding the birth of an AI; a supposedly true AI which could act as a god of the digital world, with total control over all linked in systems. Of course the coma victims recovered eventually, at least most of them did.” He leaned back into his chair letting you digest the information.
“The servers burned down a few years ago and they released the World again under a new package. We would normally leave them alone, but recently there seems to be some rumors about the coma incidents starting up again. CC Corp has thus far managed to control the information going around and we can’t do anything because they happen to have a lot of money. That is why your mission is to go in there and keep an eye on things.
Your pay will continue and all you have to do is play a game for us and keep an eye out for anything odd. We already delivered the latest M2D and the game to your home. I know this sounds a bit too far-fetched, but people died last time and because they have cash and influence we can’t do shit to touch them under normal circumstances. Act like a normal player, get information. And, if there is something odd, it will be up to you to try and resolve it. We will help where we can, but we are limited.”
You think this over for a few minutes before nodding. You always enjoyed RPGs when you were younger, getting into character over some late night D&D games. You make your way back to your fairly nice apartment, picking up a package left at your door and setting up the game.

You give a casual look through the character creation menu and decide Macabre dancer seems like it carries a good balance of offensive and defensive spells. “Victory through superior fire power” and then make a gruff looking man. You frown a bit and decide that, while manly looking, it probably is not the sort that is popular. You instead opt for something that would make your younger sister squeal in delight if she saw it.

You finish character creation and enter the name Chen. You can not stop a small smile form coming onto your face as the game flashes in front of you “Welcome to the World”

A flash of light causes you to flinch as you hold the controller and you are momentarily taken aback. You seem to be standing in a domed building with several people and a few shop around. You hear a gentle humming and turn your head only to see what the manual called a "Chaos Gate" spinning behind you.

You step aside and note a pair of scantily clad women walk up to the chaos gate and warp away. You smile a bit at this, remembering a joke about women and Armor Class. You smile and look around you. There are two shops, and a large door to the south.

In front of the right shop is a trio of players arguing heatedly about something while to the left there is a single squat beastman with a look of confusion on his face.

"My apologies, but I am afraid I will have to respecfully decline." You reply giving a smile and a soft bow.

"No, you have to because they uh. I mean..." He pauses, as if momentarily trying to figure out a good reason that you in particular have to come. He seems to come up with nothing, however, and just grumbles. "I told them this wouldn't work, no noob is stupid enough to fall for this shit, not even a fucking roleplayer." He shakes his head sadly, his oversized body swaying to a fro along with his head.

"Look noob, you have the right idea, in this game you should trust no one, and believe in nothing."

You pause momentarily at this before tilting your head and smiling gently at the admitted scam artist. "I am sorry, you keep using the word 'noob' and I am afraid I have not the slightest idea what you mean. However if you are so inclined to inform me, I shall take the advise to heart." You finish your statement with a slight bow before turning and walking away. The beastman logs out muttering something about "roleplayers" and "Touched in the head" but you pay it no mind.

You look around again and note that the trio of arguing players has split into a duo now, evidently one of the players leaving due to the dispute.

Deciding the dome area is pretty boring you make your way to the large ornate door. You give it a casual push and squint your eyes as the twilight sun hits your face. You are now standing on a bridge, to your right is a green orb floating on a pedestal. That is a warp gate through the city, you recall reading, but since you want to explore you opt to leave it alone.

You make your way over the bridge and find yourself standing on a flight of stairs which lead to a city square. In the center is a large fountain surrounded by stalls where you note several players shouting out to try and attract customers. You are about to step down into the square when you hear the sound of an engine behind you. You move to the side with a 'Kya' as what seems to be a steam powered unicycle with a birds beak in the front speeds past. The driver, some sort of pot bellied and scarred man with a large sword shouts at you as he speeds past.

You make a show of dusting yourself off then walk down the steps into the city center proper. You see a few players milling around the shops and also note there seems to be a fork here. One path, the same road the man who almost ran you down took, goes to the upper right while another does left.

Wat do?

Deciding that looking at stalls would be pretty pointless since you have no money, and deciding that following after the guy who almost ran you over would be a waste of time, or worse make you have to do some actual work, you make your way down the left path. In the corner of the road you see a kiosk with the words "Quest" written over it. Noting it you make your way along the road. You note there seems to be a small dock for a boat on the channel which the river flows through with some players standing around chatting.

You find yourself walking over a smaller bridge with some players hanging around it and another fountin. The road ends here and there is a viewing platform at the very end you stand on and admire the ocean from. You hear the cood breeze blow by and you swear you can almost smell the sea breeze.

You look around the square and note there are a few NPC shops you could go in, but with no money it would be pretty pointless. There is a group of female players chatting around the fountain, each seemingly differently color coded. There is also a lord partizan with flowing blonde hair yelling something in french nearby. You see other players milling about and think about what to do.

You get a feel for the area around the end of the road and note you could probably jump off, but you are uncertain if you would be able to swim. You decide to take each of the players in turn. First you go examine the fountain by the trio and try to take note of what they are saying.

"...And I am telling you that we need to add some more balance to the team if we want to be taken seriously in the arena." The red one states, evidently having repeated this point several times you imagine by how exasperated she sounds.

"We are in the top 100s already, what more do you want Rose?!" The green one counters, her tone rather unladylike.

"I want us to be able to take the crown Pine, I want us to have more than just offense!" The red one yells back just as loudly.

You are about to continue listening when you note the leader, a tall tanned woman in black catches your eye. You give an uneasy smile and slowly start backing away, slightly intimidated. Evidently you got caught.

You make your way back to the ledge and look down at the water again. You decide to wait and see if anyone approaches you.

You are slightly surprised when a rose hits the back of your head and you turn around to see the French yelling guy on one knee behind you with another rose in his mouth. "Oh, mademoiselle! Your eyes! Your lips! A supple beauty stands before me! I would stand alone against the One Sin itself to have your lips so much as whisper my name into the wind! Your eyes, like deep pools which steal the love of the stars themselves! Please, tell me your name so I might fight in your favor!"

Deciding that you are finished exploring and getting hit on by french guys, you make your way back to the chaos gate. Not having any keywords you decide to put them in at random and find yourself standing aroundd in an open field. You look around and note you see a few monsters mulling about. The mission of this area is "Defeat the boss" so you imagine you have to do that.

You take a look at your starter gear and examine the map. There are four small islands all connected by bridges. You look at the level requirement and note it is a level 3 area. Not too bad.


Roll two d100, I will take the best of 3. I feel going through each battle would be time consuming and unproductive, and thus will only require you to roll each action for loot, boss fights, or other events along those lines.

You manage to take a good long look over the area and find a small creature of some sort. You manage to sneak up behind it and give it a kick and it proudly tells you that in exchange for kicking it violently you are to be rewarded with some stat increases so long as you are on the field. Huh.

You easily trounce the enemies on the field and find yourself at level 3 by the time you make it to the boss.

Before you stands what can only be described as the giant bastard child of a giant chicken and a lizard. It makes no move to approach you, but you can see that it would be quite a fearsome foe if provoked. You ready your blades and move in to finish the job.

With a casual flare you begin by debuffing the creature. It lets out a shriek of surprise before moving to step on you, which you are able to nimbly dodge out of the way of. It is easy to see why your class is called the "Flowers of the Battlefield" as you spin and dance the strike at the great beast before dancing just out of its reach. You manage to strike a blow on its leg to bring it down a bit lower before jumping in the air and raking at its eyes with your fans. The beast screams and steps back as you bring your fan up to prevent any of the droplets of blood from getting onto your face.

The beast attempts to stand its ground against you, but with a small smile on your face you continue ripping it to pieces with the blades on the edge of your fans. Finally, the beast falls defeated to the ground, managing to score a small hit against you in its death throws. Flicking your fans casually you close them before turning away from the creature and examining the reward.

"This seems rather simple." You quietly mutter to yourself before the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.

You know something is wrong, something is very wrong, but you can not tell what. You glance around the area, but apart from the large corpse, you can't see anything. Giving a small shrug you make your way towards the gate when you suddenly feel a striking pain through your back. You look down and you see black spots going through your chest and out. Your chest, not your character's, not through the tinted visor of your M2D, but your chest. The strange, overly large robes which look like a gown suddenly your actual body. You feel your hands go limp and you drop your fans to the ground while you weakly raise your hands to the ever expanding stream of black dots coursing through you. You fall to your knees as they coalesce in front of you to take on an abstract shape.

You begin retching onto the ground, a flood of tears and snot falling off your face, your character's face... which is which? mixing on the floor with your hacked up bile and food particles you are certain your character did not eat. You look back up at the swirling mass of abstract nothing and grit your teeth as it swirls towards you again. You can feel yourself screaming in pain. You have been shot, you have been stabbed, you have had every part of your real body hurt in ways others can only imagine, and none of them come even close to this.

You can feel the black dots consuming you, devouring you, taking everything you are and breaking it over and over again without any rhyme or reason. Then you feel them in your mind, you feel something course through your brain and thoughts and feel something like malignant glee course through you. You feel like something is probing you, trying to dig into your mind and take what your are.

You open your eyes slowly and are momentarily stunned by the blank white ceiling. You think for a moment that you have died, but a quick flex of your arm reminds you that you are still alive. You let out a sigh and look around. You can tell you are in a hospital room, and it is dark out. You notice an IV drip leading down to your arm and you notice your legs are pretty weak. You can only guess you have been here a while. You glance around your room and notice two people in the room. One is your partner; maybe you should say ex-partner since this assignment is a solo mission.

Agent Haruko Takani is a thin woman with short cropped black hair and a few scars on her knuckles. She is a former soldier taken into the agency when they decided they needed someone willing to break heads. You two always managed to get along well, you thinking yourself the brains of the duo and her the brawn. She was one of those idiots who were still obsessed with the idea of justice and what the agency was doing, but you can't really say you hated that. She is wearing a rumpled business suit and sits sleeping in a chair in the corner.

On the couch your little sister is gently snoring. She is 19 and still lives at home. She still hasn't managed to grow out of those awkward teenage years and you are probably her best and only IRL friend. Or at least the only one who is not s drooling fan girl over some k-pop artist. She is a bit chubby and rather plain with slightly greasy hair the same color as yours and skin a touch too pale. Still she does the best she can and she can't really help that she is so awkward. When your parents discovered how well you were doing in pretty much everything she became stuck in your shadow. No matter what she did was never good enough and she ran away to those annoying boy bands for acceptance. Better than drugs you guess.

You notice that the night nurse seems to be reading at her station.

Deciding that Haruko can sleep when you are not in mortal peril you resolve to wake her up. You gently remove the IV and stand up, or try to as your legs nearly give out from having not moved in three days. You first go over to a full length mirror they keep in the room and give yourself a once over. You lift your gown and do not see any scarring and breathe a sigh of relief. As you turn to look towards your partner again out of the corner of your eye you catch what looks like black dots going over your eye. You quickly look back at the mirror and look over your eyes but they do not do it again.

You manage to make your way over to her and look her over in better detail. She is a wreck. What little make up she wears around the office is smudged and her outfit has clearly been worn for the whole three days. You smile slightly to yourself at how great a partner you have. No matter how much shit you give each other you are still like family. You are about to gently shake her awake when an idea hits you.

You lean back to smack her with the newspaper but pause momentarily. She could very well be like a jungle cat, or one of those kangaroos that maul babies or something. So instead you op to gently poke her from a safe distance with the rolled up paper. After the lightest touch on her cheek her hand snaps out and grabs hold of it, yanking it from your grasp. She evidently had no idea what she did as she opens a bleary eye and looks at you.

It takes a second or two for her to seem to fully understand that you are standing there but in the blink of an eye she has you in a tight hug. You can feel your bones cracking before she finally sets your down and looks at you as if trying to make sure you are really alright. You note that her eyes seem a bit puffy, and you notice that her make up, what little she wore for professionalism's sake, is blotchy as if she had been crying.

Satisfied, she quickly slaps you as if it were the only logical thing to do. "Stupid bastard, what the hell's wrong with you? You momentarily consider telling her to go to the director, that he insisted the mission had to remain secret for as long as it could be done but then you look into her eyes. No, she was your partner and the best damn friend you have ever had and there was no way you were just going to lie to her. "Remember those rumors around seven years ago? She purses her lips for a second before nodding. "Yeah, I remember, something about how The World was making people fall into a coma, but CC corp managed to shut all of them down. You quietly switch on your phone and hit the speed dial for the director's personal line. It rings a few times before going to voice mail. You decide that leaving that much info in a voice mail was a touch to risky and decide to just give a brief overview of the situation and requesting that he pull some strings to get you released ASAP as you have some important information for him.

You make your way to the director's office and manage to get in with little to no fuss.

You decide to take Haruko out to eat at a cheap ramen place you know she loves and begin explaining to her what you know about the game, and what you have discovered so far. She is clearly even worse than you are when it comes to computer games, but the two of you manage to get her to understand the general idea of the game. She seems to like the idea of the Edge Punisher or the tribal grappler, but after being informed you are a "fancy dancer" as she put it, she decides on the punisher for the better tanking abilities. You explain that she needs to pick a character design which will blend in the world, but she assures you she's got it.

The two of you live a few floors away from each other in the same building so she decides it is close enough that if something happens the other one can get to them pretty quick. You make your way back to your room while she goes down to try and figure out how she wants to design her character.

You look at where you were sitting a few days ago. The chair has fallen over and one of the arms is broken, but there is no sign of the pool of vomit Haruko claimed to have seen. You notice a note on your table which reads.

"Dear stupid brother,

I cleaned the place and managed to make it not smell any more.
I also restocked your fridge while you were at the office.
You owe me."

You click your tongue at that and shake your head before picking up the thankfully undamaged M2D glasses and accessing your log on screen. You do not see any new emails, and nothing catches your eyes on the forum, so you click the world icon and sign back into Chen.

When you get back to the chaos gate you see the same domes room with a large door and two shops. You also see what looks like a cat girl with a very intimidating amount of muscles and an over-sized sword on her back talking to a squat beast tribe member who- hey, you know that guy!"

You know, an aside. What is it with /tg/ and very pretty/effeminate/trap protagonists? I know that, for instance, joker quest and Strike Witches Quest have notably masculine main characters, but a lot of games get feminine MCs.

The girly thing comes off as really weird, and a little creepy, to me. Like the recent topic about sharing a cabin with a trap shota.

You make your way up to stand behind the cat-girl giving the best smile you can. He looks over at you and then just stops mid sentence. You both share an uncomfortable moment together before giving him a casual wave "Yo, still trying to trick the young and ignorant, huh?" You ask making him sag in defeat.

"Fucking roleplayers, god damn chick harshing my groove. Swear to god if I was on my primary I would pk you so hard you would 23r9823hyqr98r231rr1x298y" He begins ranting and grumbling as if possessed before gating out again.

"What was that all about? Bastard getting all friendly." She grumbles, confirming that she is, in fact, Haruko. You take a better look at her character. She has what seems to be loose torn pants on and a sarashi chest wrap. The rest of her character is covered in muscles and scars. She seems to be missing one eye, and one of her ears looked nicked nearly halfway through. At least she isn't adding 'nya' to the ends of her sentences.

You smile at her before explaining "Some people try to hunt others, using those who have just come to this city as easy prey. You must be more careful in choosing who to listen and trust, and who to ignore. Shall I show you around?" You ask causing her to shake her head.

"Sorry lady, uh, I am waiting for my friend. We are supposed to be doing something together. You, uh, you heard any rumors about people falling into comas while playing this game?" She asks making you almost want to hit her. So this is what it feels like to be a PK.

You open up a private message window and send her a short mail: "Haruko, it's me"

The character avatar twitches momentarily before you hear her looking through the manual and finally opening the short mail. She pauses for a second before beginning to laugh, a torrent of pure joy echoing through her body. You suspect if you were to go into your hallway right now you would hear her through the building.

Fume a bit the exchange addresses and info. Then explore a bit. The place we got attacked is most likely no longer available.

You stand there for a few moments while her laughter plays out. You let her calm down before finally talking again. "Glad you are finished. Now, we should form a party and go to the area I warped to last time." -GAINED CONTACT INFO FOR: DURGA Lvl 1. Edge Punisher-

You add her to your party and make your way to the chaos gate. Looking at your history of warped areas you see it. "Twisted King's Bloody Sunday". The only area on there, level 3, fight the boss. You select it and the two of you are warped there.

You look around the grassy field, noting that everything looks the same except... wait, where are all the monsters? And the treasure? Also, why is the music missing? Very odd indeed. You indicate for Durga to follow you to the end of the map where you fought the boss. On the spot where you got hit by the black orbs you see the texture has all been blow away to reveal a base wire framework, additionally the corpse of the giant chicken thing did not go away. Odd.
