You are a human-form gargoyle crafted of marble set to protect a small town on the frontier of the wild darkness. Your people are still ignorant of what you are, and rightfully so.
Knowledge of what you are would simply prove that they fear you or the monsters among them tempt your destruction.

Last night: You were informed of a recent development of the village by Pastor Clegane.

He spoke to you of a shipment that had been delayed, inciting the fury of the town's resident noble, Victora Manse.

As the day went on, you took notice of an unnatural snow in the mid of summer. Father Clegane had said that the village had not had snow during summer in any of his years, you suspect foul play.

With the onset of night, you met the nightly guest of the church, the young witch by the name of Alice.

Alice appeared nervous before you, having heard tales of your kind. However, you swore to her that she was under your protection as well. The noble guardian angel of Hearthson shelters all peaceful beings under its watch!

With the night, a blizzard rolled in that impedes your path to the west.

You encountered frostbitten, gaunt white monsters in the cold of the mountain's blizzard. You tracked the primal magic of the blizzard and found these monsters at the source.

After witnessing a Black Gargoyle Vanquish the apparent home of the Wendigo, you scout, to determine whether the flighty creatures have all been exterminated.

You meet a clan of gnomes, the leader of which informs you that Wendigo are demons that enter humans that have partaken in cannibalism.

With that knowledge in heart, you return to the caravan and find a greater Wendigo among the fresh ones..

Awaken Gargoyle, the night is dark.
>>
You grind your marble teeth slightly in frustration even as they regenerate. You will have the heads of all these Wendigo as of yet...

You look further up the mountain and an idea sparks within you... What if you caused an avalanche... That way, it would delay the search for whatever they sought to find except...

Except that would bury and likely ruin the supplies as well..

The threat to the people is the Wendigo. You cannot let them have their way.

You open your wings and fly back to the Caravan, to draw back more of the monsters only to find the drone-like underlings standing in waiting, the "lord" is out of sight... where could it have gone?

>[] Retreat and search for the elusive Wendigo Lord.
>[] Attack the remaining underlings.
>[] Wait and watch, it couldn't have found its prize already, could it?
>[] (Other)

You notice that nearly all of the carts are overturned, and the fresh Wendigo seem to be even stiffer than before. What's going on with them?

Also, sorry I fell asleep on you guys last time. Caffeining up and not gonna lay down to "rest my eyes."

Angel has business to take care of.

Hey. I asked on the discussion, but did not get an answer: I am planning to run a game of this with a friend of mine, including pretty much straight-up ripping the XP tables and such. Can you give any advise (or straight up tables) for Obsidian and Granite tables? And further, advise on how to run combat?
>>
>>24043684

How late in the night is it?

I'm not sure if we're going to be better off trying to pick off the underlings or go for the big guy.
>>
>>24043725

Aye, I saw that and I thought a bit about that.

Will you be running it with the same or similar setting? (Time period-wise)

I can help you with fabricating the Granite and Obsidian tables if you'd like, though in the case of frequent monsters, I'd up the exp costs a bit, I've considered doing that for this quest but I'm thinking that... Well, nvm.

The basis for Obsidian is that it attracts and channels demonic energy, it's hard yet brittle, and sharp.

For Granite, it's solid, barely holds an edge yet it's a bit lighter than marble.

For Obsidian, I'd replace Earthen and Natural with something akin to Forsaken and Hellish which would increase the potencies of Demonic magic.

... tbc

>>24043802
You cannot tell with the blizzard.
>>
Solid Marble and Dense Marble would instead be

Sharp Glass and Razor Black. Upping overal sharpness and somewhat to overall resilience and how prone it is to shattering.

Polished would remain the same.

Feared Stone

And Unholy Black would replace the next subsequents

Since the Material trees enhance on already present traits, these would be better for making people fear your daytime form and more likely to keep away. In a way, it could prevent people from shattering you because they'd be too superstition to dare even touch you with Unholy Black, at least, to the stupid superstitious people.
>>
Granite's middle tree would cash in on the blending in, inconspicuous part.
>>
>>24043832

Let's go with taking out a few more of the underlings, then.
>>
>>24043832
Yeah, same setting. Similar set-up. New village on the edge of the frontier, gargoyles supplied to protect it in secret. The reason there is two is because the makers are rivals, and decided they'd drop one each there. The better guardian is the just another notch in the belt of the maker.

We were thinking that the basics of them would be subtelty and hiding for Granite, and sharpness and intimidation for Obsidian. My friend made a Dark Guardian Granite, I made a Demon-Blooded Obsidian.

My friend is really good with random charts, and has decided to make a huge random chart for all sorts of monster that might wander in. I took Beacon so we will not be short of prey.
>>
So... lifesense and windsense combined can locate wendigos, yes?
Is the locating effect still active (since we are close enough to the lord for it to suppress our wind manip) and just not picking up the lord or has it been disabled by proximity to the others?

Regardless of whether it found what it was looking for or not, it is still around us, we can tell because our wind control turned off.

We need more info, Circle the area and keep your eyes peeled
>>
>>24043948

The Lord is a blank spot on your radar for all of your current senses save for sight. You But yes, with the wind sense and life sense, you can locate normal Wendigo.

>>24043946
Random chart might actually help me out a bit if he wanted to post it in discuss or send it to an email.

I've been searching all over for good monster-wikis but none seem to fit the bill of horror mythos and the like. I've got some lined up but IL feel like there are many untapped veins that I'm just not seeing.
>>
>>24043948
Second. Keep an eye out for tracks in the snow. Something that big will leave deep imprints in fresh snow.
>>
Rolled 42

Huh...
>>
I will post more in the discussion, as I sadly need sleep. Don't get us killed, guys. I enjoy reading this quest too much.
>>
You back off from the scene of the wreck, you notice that the blizzard has cleared up at least a little and your nightvision is even a bit more true.

With the Lord out of sight, you are wary. you sincerely hope that it did not find what it was looking for, yet you glare at those delicious looking morsels from afar.. If only you... No you need to find the greater threat.

The lord is the source of this chaos and it is up to something..

You open your wings and prepare to take flight as a shadow slips from the corner of your vision.

You react well enough to block a long and bony tail whipping through the air to crush you.

Your body withstands the force well enough, though you get smacked back at least twenty feet from the caravan, you hold your ground, sliding backward in the earth and snow.

With many empty eyes staring at you, and the Fresh Wendigo minions enscircling, you are facing the Lord Wendigo and ten small ones.

In many deep and unnatural voices, the Greater Wendigo speaks," You... are... in... the way... begone." The mighty stag head at the top of its form bares its skeletal teeth at you, clearly ready to destroy you if you continue interference.

You hear a shrieking howl in the distance.

>[] Unsheathe daggers and attack the leader!
>[] Strike at the nearest underling, you mut weed out their number.
>[] Take the defensive, bide for time.
>[] Retreat, this is too much for you to handle.
>[] (Other)

For combat, as usual I'll have you guys roll against my rolls once a decision is made. Certain conditions and strategies will alter the rolls. Good luck Angel!
>>
There is also the option to speak to this monster as a free action.
>>
Is it the same shrieking howl as the black gargoyle from before?
>>
>>24044247
>[x] (Other) Avalanche.
If he wants us gone; go. Let him think we're running away.
>>
>>24044337

Maybe.
>>
>>24044247
I really don't think that we'll get anything from talking to the Greater Wendigo.

[X] Strike at the nearest underling, you must weed out their number.

We go after the boss now we'll get piled on top of. We can beat them through attrition, if we kill some we can wait out our regeneration and keep it up.
>>
>>24044399

So strike, retreat, and strike again. noted.
>>
>>24044368
Heh :)...
Yea, now I am also worried about him stealing our kills, AGAIN.

>>24044399
We go after the boss and 10 minions flank us.
We go after a minion and 9 minions + 1 boss flank us.
I would rather NOT get flanked by the boss.

Also, if we take out the boss escape becomes possible as do aerial attacks.

Talking to him could reveal useful intel, it could also lead to us getting closer to him physically to launch a vicious and hopefully fatal attack.
>>
>>24044463

What will you say to the Greater Wendigo?
>>
We've got Other(Avalanche)
Attack Underling
And what seems to be Attack the boss.

What'll it be my friends?
>>
>>24044671

My vote is for attack underling. We aren't likely to take down the big guy in one hit, which means if we attack him, we end up surrounded.

Pick one of the lesser wendingos, take them out as quickly as possible, prevent ourself from being surrounded, and repeat.
>>
>>24044722

>>
>>24044671
Avalanche.
>>
"I propose a deal, I will help you find what you want from this caravan, and in exchange you and the rest of the wendigos of the mountain leave my town alone". (hopefully he reveals more about the wendigo population of the mountain or the item he is searching for or agrees to the deal allowing us to get close enough to him for a surprise attack).

Depending on answer we decide what to do.
>>
>>24044722
>>24044399

I was not this guy, if that's what you mean.
>>
>>24044671
I seriously doubt attacking directly will work. Our previous divide and conquer tactics won't work if they're all focusing on us like this.

[x]Avalanche.

Also, how are those souls feeling? Digested yet?
>>
You know what, pretend to leg it and do avalanche plan
>>
>>24044753

Meh. We know from the gnomes last time that wendingos don't have a body of their own. They have to take them from people. As far as I'm concerned, that makes it pretty much impossible that these wendingos are anything other than a direct threat to our town. Besides, they already turned the entire caravan.
>>
>>24044722
He's in front of us, ready to attack. Along with 10 wendigos.

How are we going to grab one with out the others pouncing on us.
That only works if they are spread out/focusing on other things.
>>
You begin to back off, taking the warning for what it is... an opportunity.

You bow your head, saying nothing as the Greater Wendigo bares its monsterous maw at you, glaring all the while.

You keep on going for a bit, never turning your back to these monsters until they are well out of sight.

Turning finally, you break out into a run, as fast as you are able through the snow until you hit the limit of the Greater Wendigo's Dominion.

Regaining control over your own air, you spread your wings and fly up the mountain, observing the heavy snow lying further up a slope.

You know not whether the Greater Wendigo has found what he's looking for, however you can worry about that later. You intend to bring down the looser part of this mountain right down into the mountain path.

Rock and snow will bury whatever prize the Lord is seeking along with the Villager's supplies and Victora Manse's "luxuries."

Will you carry out this plan?

Roll 1d100 best of 3 if yes.
>>

yes.

Also, remember to fly ahead of it looking to dive-bomb the LEADER at the same time the avalanche hits. We want his soul and he will be too busy with it to fight us. If we get buried its ok, we will survive and as soon as we finish digesting get the tools needed to dig ourselves out

Gathering an opressive amount of ripping wind under your whim, you swoop down across the mountain, letting the gust cut a deep gash into the loose snow of the mountain.

You hear a building rumble among the blizzard winds as the build up of snow brings down rock and it builds into an oppressive and destructive wave.

You stay ahead of the avalanche enough to observe where the Wendigo leader is and face a savage thought in your mind that you'd like to strike as the avalanche hits, yet you shove that away...

You'll be as malevolent as one of these demons, you'll pick off this trash one by one as they dig themselves out... If they dig themselves out.

With what sight you have through the wind and dark, you see that a whole side of the mountain is effectively gone, displaced in way of the pass.

You hear the howl of the Lord Wendigo as it- and its minions, get buried by the several hundred, perhaps thousands of tons of snow.

You drift about in the air, losing your sense of the wind for them, yet you sense that the lesser wendigo's lives have flickered. The undetectable Lord remains as a mystery however.

You see a blaze from the corner of your eye!

You narrowly dodge the oncoming blaze only to be blasted back by the explosion of a fireball.

You feel your body's recently healed cracks begin to reopen from the impact.

In the middle of the blast-back, you witness the Black Gargoyle coming down with the bottom of its staff, reacting well enough to catch it as the black one roars with fire streaming from its form.

"Traitor! Demon! Die!!!" Its mouth opens at the end of the un-lipped accusations and delivers a fireball directly into your face, You feel as though your face is melting at this point, and you are pinned by the Black Gargoyle's oppressive strength, holding back its staff or risk it in all likelihood shattering your torso.

>[] Pinned and accused by the black Gargoyle, what will you do or say?

Seconding >>24045486.

You maintain a firm grip upon the oppressive staff as you futiley attempt to twist it from the black one's grip, despite your superior humanform grip, his power clearly surpasses yours and all you hear is a low grumble as he forces the thing lower into your slowly regenerating body.

You attempt to reason with him, "Are you blind? Could you not tell that all those who were below had fed on the flesh of man and were no longer those who we are sworn to protect?"

"Your ignorance is no excuse for what you have done." The Black One growls, his voice like a demon, echoing through the snows and powerful.

"The ones I had slain were beyond saving. You have devoured the souls of men! You have devoured men and destroyed this pass! You have endangered your charges and ignorant gravel as you..."

His mouth opens with another fireball, welling up with power," Should be eradicated."

With quick thinking, you will an accelerated amount of air into the Black One's maw, detonating his own flame while in the charge-stage.

This gives you time enough to back off from him as he's stunned momentarily.

With some distance between yourself and the burning Gargoyle, you have a moment of respite.

The Black one's features draw into a scowl as it regards you," Traitorous insect..."

You feel your power over wind robbed from you as the greater gargoyle calls it to his own aid.

"They were beyond saving, they had already half transformed and were following a wendigo lord who was searching for something specific and had to be stopped before they attacked the town"

Definitely spend.

1 for earth-sense is a must to further improve our detection abilities.
2 for solid marble (increases durability and increases blunt force damage).
2 for shape earth (very good utility, boosts overall control with primal, and stacks with earthen)
1 for earthen (bonus to primal magic, especially earth)
2 for natural (bonus to primal magic)

keep other 2 for now.

You decide to battle it out with the black gargoyle.

With his previous offense destroying the robe you've been gifted, and the current, outright attacking you and accusing you of endangering your charges, you cannot let this pass.

With the time for reasoning over, you wrap the shadows around your body, obscuring the vision of your adversary, yet you can feel the dull sensation of him being aware of you.

You charge in from the side, only to eat a savage fireball, detonating as you try to slip past it, knocking you back and riddling your left arm with deep cracks.

Your adversary is the one to close the distance now, advancing upon your darkness with flames wrapped around his body, fending off the black.

He raises his staff and abruptly sends it down with the loud explosion of thunder. Fire and lightning blasting from the contact point and destroying your already shattered arm.

In wild abandon, you bring your wings around the antagonist gargoyle, enfolding him and forcing him into range for an uppercut from your downed position.

You feel the black glass of his body begin to shatter from the single punch and you spring to standing before lunging down on your adversary, unleashing blow after blow to his glass body with your own of marble.

>>
You notice a shadow from the corner of your vision and swing your remaining arm while enhancing the block with your wing.

You slide back a few feet this time from the strike of a bony tail.

The Greater Wendigo, having unburied itself in the fight between Gargoyles roars with anger enough to cause a second avalanche had there been enough snow.

Your right wing has thick chips taken off of it along with the bony tail of the Wendigo Lord.

You are robbed of your wind control as the anger of the monster unfolds, monstrous winds whipping across the land, robbing evergreens poking through the snow of their needles.

It appears you have offended this monster and it wants to see you shattered.

The Obsidian Gargoyle is nearly destroyed from your bludgeoning, and lies in the snow, motionless with what's likely the last of his spark.

You are missing an arm, grounded, and have deep cracks in your body that are healing slowly.

How are you getting through this one Angel?

Well he is the guardian of another town, even if a slightly mad one. So it might be unfair and unethical and all that crap to make the decision to possibly endanger human lives just because we got a dent in our pride

Captcha: coöperative Wamilie

Think everyone else wants his power...

Rolled 37

>>24047476
Wear it down. Try to rip off the tail if possible.
>>
>>24047476
What does it look like?

Any injuries? Broken limbs? Bleeding?

It was just in an avalanche, it should be hurt a little.

If it has any injuries or obvious weak spots, we can come up with a strategy.
>>
Can we please spend SOMETHING on upgrades now?
>>
>>24047429
Not completely. Sooner or later we will have to destroy him. If he is able to regenerate he would be an extremely valuable asset in this fight however. Given that regeneration is extremely useful and pretty cheap he most likely can regenerate.

Stall for time. If one of you can think of dialogue, use that. Otherwise try to stay out of its range for as long as possible. Use the terrain to your advantage (he is really big, if you move between two trees he has to either get around or destroy them).

We need time to regenerate. The other gargoyle doesn't look like a threat at all, but will most likely heal with time. A surprise attack by that gargoyle could very well be, what we need to win.
>>
PS. what do the following 3 traits do:
Frenzied Regen
Might of the Wood
Primal Heart
>>
>>24047580
Additional question: Could we use earth shape to quicken our regeneration?
>>
>>24047580
Frenzied Regen enables regeneration of entirely lost limbs.

Might of the Wood grants strength similar to that of the Forest Troll, yet in smaller form.

Primal Heart allows for increased capability with Primal magic.n Auto-grants Earth Sense.

Shape Earth is more for molding non-imbued earth.

You could attach it to your form, however there would be additional effort in articulating it, and it would not be the same material.
>>
Next time it swings its tail at you, try to grab it.

>>24047597
very good question... Or at least draw our own broken parts back towards us.
Also, does earth shape only give utility or can it be used to fling earth fast enough to be used in combat.
>>
>>24047639
I do think that now is the time to use some exp

Voting for Frenzied Regen and Dense Marble, they should leave us with 1 unused exp
>>
>>24047662

With enough proficiency... such as Primal Heart and Natural, you could make remote Earth- Spikes.

I'll work on an overall profiency/ powerscaling sheet when I have some time.
>>
>>24047639
I think since we have 10xp
we should get
Frenzied Regen 7xp
Dense Marble 2xp
Earthen 1xp
for a total use of all 10xp
then we could get the remaining wendigo souls
as well as the gargoyle soul
for much more xp
>>
>>24047677
Second. We are almost useless right now. We need to regenerate our arm and patch up all our cracks if we want to do anything.
>>
Lets get:
Frenzied Regen 7xp
Dense Marble 2xp
Earth Sense 1xp - detecting threats is king.
>>
>>24047755
Seconding
>>
>>24047686
Is Demonic Agility greater than Wolven Agility and cover it or do the abilities stack same way Beastly Strength and Might of the Wood might work?
>>
>>24047639
I think the following would be useful in this fight:

Primal Heart: We can flight again. We are at a huge disadvantage because the enemy controls the wind.
Dense Marble: We still crack far too easily

Maybe some kind of magic attacks. Some fire-stuff for example.

>>24047677
>>24047755
I don't think Frenzied Regen is worth it. It's most likely too slow to regenerate whole limbs midfight and afterwards we can gather the remains of our arm.
>>
>>24047789

Demonic is greater. And yes they stack.
>>
>>24047755
Thirding. Being able to sense that thing would be helpful.
>>
It's getting a touch late.

And I'm sure you guys want to get this right. I'll close this session for the night and let you post ideas in the discuss.

As a note, you do indeed have 10 exp.

Don't forget that you also have the Brutality and Stealth Trees.
>>
>>24047810
If we get Earth Sense will Primal Heart become cheaper?
>>
>>24047840

No.

Really might as well just do Primal Heart.
>>
How fast is frenzied regen atually? If it is really slow it will not help during THIS battle.
We WILL regrow the arm if we win and collect our fragments for our regular regen to use.

Alternative builds:
1. Shadow master: 2XP shadow forge (always armed), 3XP shadow hounds (we win action economy and can hold back a horde of enemies while we focus on one at a time). 3xp shadow step.
2. master of elements: Primal heart 4XP, earthen 1XP, natural 1XP, 3XP lightening or 2XP earth and 2XP fire. - magic good.
3. Melee master: dense marble 2XP OR beastly strength 5XP, force 1XP, wolven agility 4XP.
>>
>>24047755
Okay with everything but Earth Sense it doesn't cheapen Primal Heart and I think we should save until we can get that too
>>
>>24047755
While Frenzied Regen would be useful in and of itself, we have to consider what we could buy instead with 7xp. Given that there was nothing about it being faster than our already quick regen its advantage right now would be very small.

Compared to that Primal Heart would most likely let use be airborne again. It would include earth sense as well. It
I can't stretch enough that right now we are a slow, fragile, small statue compared to a gigantig flying monster. Being able to regenerate more things doesn't help us any if the enemy just breaks us apart faster. I seriously doubt we can regen faster than we are hit while fighting this enemy with this huge terrain disadvantage.

tl;dr We should invest in not getting hit as much and trust in our already very good regeneration.
>>
>>24047860
Frenzied regen is not to the point of regrowing an entire limb mid-fight.

It is indeed superior to the Werewolf regen, however the full fabrication takes time.

It is definitely worth it however in a case where you become just a bust and need to regen your entire body.

You guys just had to piss on the black gargoyle...
>>
>>24047912
If we don't get Frenzied Regen and are going the Primal Heart route then we might as well go all the way
Primal Heart 4xp
Earthen 1xp
Natural 2xp
and
Dense Marble 2xp
because we break too easily
leaving us with 1xp to spend later
>>
>>24047993

To be fair, the Obsidian Gargoyle has a lot invested into its overall killing force. He's cracked you guys more than the Wendigos ever have.
>>
>>24047917
>You guys just had to piss on the black gargoyle...
We DID try talking... or did you mean piss OFF?

>>24047904
Fair enough...
I think my currently favorite spending is:
Primal heart 4XP, earthen 1XP, natural 2XP, 3XP lightening
that is 3 large bonuses to primal and a purely magical form of attack at range that is nearly undodgeable and stacks nicely with our wind control (blow some clouds over).

We will get dense marble ASAP afterwards.
>>
>>24047860
I think Master of elements would fit best with how we have played so far. Hit and run tactics are far better if you can attack from a distance. I also think that the fire would do at least as much damage against this foe as beastly strength would let us dish out. Being able to fly again would also boost our agility quite a bit, although I don't know if it would be as good as wolven agility.
>>
>>24048022
I like this build, but maybe we should exchange natural with dense marble? I'm honestly not sure which one would be better right now.
>>
Frenzied regen would be extremely useful in the future.

Archived.

As a note, I've been thinking about Primal magic.

It's a wild force.

I'll be initiating rolls with certain applications of the spells.

Primal Heart, Natural, and earthen will better the chances of these rolls determinedly, offering +20, +7, and +3 respectively, along with stacking.

Natural and Earthen bonuses become +15 total when used for earth magic.

Comparatively, Marble will start with -15 to
Demonic.

This sound good?

Will repost in Discuss.
>>
>>24048194
Sounds good. Now that their individual usefulness can be compared I think dense marble is better than natural.
