So it turns out pandora radio considers Sabaton to be like dubstep. I'm not sure if that's entirely accurate on their part, but I can't bring myself to worry too much, haha.

anyway.

Archives here: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Strike%20Witches%201989
and there's a character sheet here- if you want to skip an archive binge, this will get you up to speed for the most part. it's mostly up to date. http://pastebin.com/zFxWNup1

++

You're not entirely sure that another man wouldn't love to be in your position right about now.

When you think about it, it is kind of enviable. After all, you're a decorated war hero, you're surrounded by beautiful females, and you drive the hottest piece of military hardware in the world. You've got at least one Russian woman madly in love with you, and she's not too bad looking either.

After all, look at her. Long black hair streaming in the wind, body of a model, and the most intense blue eyes you've ever seen. Really, you're pretty sure that the vast majority of American males would kill to be in your boots right now.

Of course, that fact that that same Russian beauty is totally insane and attempting to fill your jet full of holes in an effort to 'prove' her 'worth' to you is kind of off-putting. Well, that and the fact that's she's all but sworn to kill every other member of your squadron. That's probably a point of contention in any future relationship as well.

>>
Grunting, you dance your fighter away from her stream of tracers again, narrowly avoiding them. She's improved- or she's not playing around anymore. But, on the good side, she's completely focused on you- your allies tearing hers to shreds around you two seems of no concern to her at all.

However, she's also good enough that if you don't keep her busy, she'll probably destroy the majority of this force. It kind of leaves you in a bind.

“My love, what is wrong?” She asks. “You have not even tried to attack me. Have I displeased you?” Her voice sounds... well, confused.

“Perhaps I am not trying hard enough? I did think that maybe my darling would need some time to prepare himself, but maybe I have made a mistake? I am sorry if I have offended you! Forgive me my love!” She practically wails, while redoubling her efforts to swat you from the sky.

You roll over one shot, diving quickly under the other, careening through the sky in an effort to lose the witch firmly glued to your six. There's no clouds, not today, and you don't dare call in help- she'd rip them apart. Girl is good, you'll admit that.

Bad idea to get into a low-level fight with a witch. We might be able to outrun her, especially at altitude, but she'll win a turning fight. If we can get above her and dive, though...

You honk your fighter in a brutal break turn, ramming the throttle forward to the stops and feeling your big jets howl, hundreds of pounds of fuel dumped into them in an instant. The sudden acceleration gains you some much-needed distance- breathing room.

“My love, why do you flee? Am I so little of a challenge?” Konstantina asks, sounding hurt.

“Hardly.” You respond. “But this isn't an appropriate place for us to dance, is it?”

That quiets her down, at least- and she stops shooting, too- folding, almost, into a very loose formation.

It isn't, of course, and you're still forced to go defensive as soon as you're feet wet- her tracers announcing more than anything else that your temporary truce is at an end.

You point your nose skyward, riding the afterburner plumes like a shuttle orbiter- though, unlike a shuttle orbiter, you don't have the energy or fuel to get into space. You level off at about angels sixty- high enough that you and Merlin both can feel the chill start creeping in. Many things a fighter may be, well insulated is not one of them.

She's on you again before you know it, a pair of slashing dives, aimed at making you drop lower. Fortunately, up here, your wings count for as much as her sparkles- she's got to expend more effort to stay aloft than your jet, and it works in your favor, allowing you to cut a few tighter turns than she expected. You turn inside one- shield flashing as a few errant rounds from her SMG almost find their mark.

“Tch.” She chides. “The little harlot. I almost forgot about her, my love. Still, it does make this far more interesting, da?”

Merlin's shield flashes again, intercepting another few rounds- a high deflection shot you didn't think she'd be able to connect with. “Frank, I don't know how much more of that I can stop...” Merlin says, sounding tired.

“Perhaps I will not kill you, little whore.” Konstantina says, almost conversationally. You've managed to shake her off, but she's dropped below you, somewhere. “My love seems to be tolerant of you, so perhaps I should be as well, no? Perhaps I will allow you to visit sometimes!”

“Frank, I... I think I can track her, but if I try, I can't shield us.” Merlin says, her voice hesitant. “W-we tried to set up a buffer so it doesn't hurt as bad if we get hit, but...” She trails off.

[x] “Do it Merlin. If I can see where she is, she can't touch us.”

Situational awareness is everything in a dogfight. Your instructors hammered that into your brain- and it's backed by reams and reams of combat reports and data painstakingly gleaned from the last half century of aerial warfare. Some guys used to budget it like fuel- run out, lose track of the fight, and it's time to leave.

Of course, conventional wisdom also has forever held that the only counter to a witch is another witch, and any steelwing stupid enough to tangle with one deserves to go down in flames and smoke.

So, sometimes, you kind of cast doubt on conventional wisdom.

“Do it Merlin. If you can track her, I won't let her touch us.” You say, rolling inverted long enough to check below you, and thanking your gods Konstantina prefers strikers painted a high gloss black. Your center MFD lights up seconds later, an image only Merlin could cobble together in such a short time in the middle of combat. It's a composite sensor image- radar, and the Tesla sensors, both enhanced by her sparkles- one, a blue hound's head- shows you, while a red star with height, heading, velocity, and altitude tracks your opponent.

She's off about a half mile out to your ten, way, way low- almost sea level. How she can't see you is almost-

You stop that thought, realizing, belatedly, you're in the sun. She can't see you because of the glare. As if in confirmation, she calls across the radio, jokingly, but with a definite undercurrent of fear.

“My love, that is an interesting trick! Tell me, how did you learn to disappear? Or is your little follower to blame for this?” She asks. “Regardless, you cannot hide from me, darling. We were not done dancing yet!”

[x] Dive. Dive, hit your burners, and use the guns. All the guns.

For some reason, old country music starts playing in your head as you roll inverted, thumbing your weapons selector switch to guns- then quickly remembering the gunpods aren't linked to that group.

“Merlin, can you group the gunpods and the internals real fast?” You ask calmly, screaming towards the ocean at close to mach one.

“Done.” Merlin says after a second.

A feral grin splits your lips beneath your mask as you dive.

“My love, where did you go?” Konstantina asks, right as the your sights flashe over- at this height, with this angle, and at this speed, she's in range.

“Right here, darling.” You respond, thumbing the trigger.

Two 25mm guns and two 30mm guns roar, rocking your aircraft under their combined recoil. Hundreds of rounds fill the air in front of you, an expanding wall of lead, high explosive, and depleted uranium.

1/2
>>
To her eternal credit, Konstantina doesn't hesistate, jerking herself sideways almost the same instant you hit the trigger. Her shield flashes once, twice, then lights up and stays lit as she fills your gunsight- absorbing enough punishment, by now, to kill any two others, you think.

Her return fire forces you off with a pair of grazing hits- Merlin yelps, but you didn't hear the distinctive tick of a round puncturing your jet, and you broke off the second Konstantina flipped over- You remember what Viper did back over the desert, months ago.

“My love is demanding!” She exclaims over the radio. “Darling, you must slow down. I do not know If I can keep up!”

Guns aside, you have the advantage- she can't stop, you'd ram her if she did, and she seems like she's too tired to break hard enough to shake you, though you don't seem to remember the Wyvern wanting to turn quite this hard before. The roles reversed, you're close to ending it. You dump the now empty gunpods, the sudden loss of weight hardly affecting your aircraft- but every little bit matters, especially now.

“Frank! You've got leakers! Six bandits, angels twenty! Break off and head north!” Ice cuts across your radio, right as you get an attack solution.

[] “Nuts to that, I've got her cold. Three more seconds and she's gone.”

[x] “Understood, Ma'am. Hold onto yer butt Merlin, we're outta here!”

You would have had her. It's really the only consolation you can give yourself as you break left and away from her, lobbing a pair of agiles as you do so- maybe you'll get lucky.

The tracers and pair of explosions far, far too early signal that no, you won't.

“We’ll have to continue this some other time, 'darlin.” You drawl. “I'll be sure to write ya.”

“It is unkind to tease me, my love.” She responds, sounding tired herself. “I can understand that I may have earned it by calling for help and I will bear it, but it is unkind.”

“Nah, no 'kiddin. Give it about a week, alright?” You say, looking for the hostile fighters- six bandits isn't anything you couldn't handle, but you'd rather they didn't get the drop on you.

You streak to the north- towards the burning city. Imperial Japanese Marines, backed by a few USMC companies, have assaulted it, driving the Chinese forces out. Still, despite total air superiority, heavy close air support, naval gunfire, and attack helos, losses look to be high, and parts of the city are in ruins- despite the relative lightness of the fighting there.

“F-frank?” Merlin says, her voice practically a whisper. “Throttle back and don't go above seventy five percent, ok? The engines won't handle it.”

You do so, looking down at your boards in surprise. You didn't take a hit- just those two glancing ones- but your engines are both showing a few faults- one of them's giving your a compressor warning, and the other seems to be struggling to match it's setting. A few of your flaps are out, and your wing sweep is shot- your wings are locked in the out position.

“Merlin, what happened?” You ask, surprised and a bit confused.

“We pushed the plane too hard, Frank.” She says. “We'd have flown the old tomcat apart by now.”

“Frank, do you need an escort?” Ice asks over the radio. “We're clear here. The IJNAF's got the airspace. I can detach someone to fly your wing home.”

An escort might be nice if you develop trouble, but at the same time the witches have to be low on sparkles, and the twins are probably as low on fuel- if not more so.

[x] “Yeah, send someone back.”

You look back down at your MFD, and tally up the damage. It's all stress damage- but some of it is pretty scary. Hairline fractures in some of your skeletal components are probably the most worrisome, though the engines are kind of scaring you too. Now that Merlin's mentioned it, your number two is whining a lot more than it should be- that high pitched, teeth vibrating kind of whine that drives a person crazy slowly. Reluctantly, you drop it back to half throttle, then down further to a very slow cruising speed as you cross the Bungo channel and Katya joins up on you, looking much better for wear than you.

She slowly slides around your aircraft, shaking her head as she looks back at your canopy. “I do not know how you did it.” She says. “We were able to see the contrails. That was... She is very good. How you managed to defeat her is...”

“I didn't defeat her.” You correct. “We both broke off. I put rounds into her shield, she did the same to us.”

“She would have been your kill if she had not had help breaking away.” Katya says, insistently.

You don't respond, though Katya starts humming Katyusha, a faint smile playing about her lips.
You thank all the various gods when the airbase slides into view- and let go of a breath you didn't know you were holding when your wheels finally kiss the pavement. You park your bird on the tarmac, dismounting with some help from a pair of Marines- your legs are weak after that, barely wanting to work. Now that the adrenaline has left your system, all you really want is a long, hot bath and a warm bed.

Better question is this:
YF-19, YF-21, or X-9?

A third marine carries Merlin, who's dozing fitfully, her helmeted head tucked against his body armor. He grins when you look back over your shoulder at him.

“Got one back home just like her, sir. Maybe a year or two younger. Little girls never wanna admit it, but they never outgrow their daddies, you know?” He says, quietly.

Katya joins your group, looking first at the gunnery Sargent carrying Merlin, then at the two marines supporting you. She moves in along your left side- your wounded side- and takes the lance corporal’s place, her magic clearly not exhausted yet.

The five of you find an air force HMMVW- parked near a trio of C-5 aircraft, all busily offloading pallets of equipment and supplies. Something tells you that one of those will be taking your fighter home.

The marines quickly commandeer the vehicle, and you thankfully accept the ride, being far too tired to walk. Slider steps out of the house when you pull up.

“Holy shit.” The gunnery Sargent says, laughing as he exits the humvee. “Little Rachel Kerner. How ya doin kiddo?”

Slider's eyes narrow for a second. “Wayne?”

The marine laughs again. “How's yer mom?”

Slider responds with one of her patented bone-crushing hugs.

“Easy kid!” he laughs. “I just turned up this guy and he was wearing your unit patch, so I figured he was one of yers.”

Slider looks over at you and nods. “Yeah, he's ours.”

[x] “I'm communal property, now?”

“I'm communal property, now?” You ask, laughing weakly, thinking how it'd be nice to be able to curl up in a little ball and go to sleep like Merlin. At least your legs work correctly again.

“Hardly.” Katya says, her accent noticeable. “Communism does not work. As I have heard here, ask me how I know this.”

You can't help but laugh more fully at that, lifting Merlin out of the Humvee and carrying her inside. Even in her rescue vest, your RIO weighs nothing- a fact for which you're very grateful right now.

Inside, the witches bags line the front hallway, while Maverick and Goose sit and watch TV. You deposit Merlin on your rack- you don't think you're going to be able to sleep before you load up anyway, and hers is the top bunk anyway, and you're not going to lift her.

[x] Fuck it. Crash on the floor till someone comes to get you.

Everyone else is packed- but you never unpacked, and you're beat. Physically and mentally worn out. You don't want to admit it, but that fight took a lot out of you. Besides, you already know the plan- wait till the big birds are unloaded, reloaded with your stuff, then file your happy asses on board and fly to wherever. It was supposed to be Mirimar first, but you're not sure now, not with the Wyvern worn out as it is.

Seems like you're barely asleep before you're woken up by Katya. “Frank, it is time to go.” She says, gently shaking your boot.

“Arghbleuh.” You return, eloquently. “What time is it?”

“About... three? In the morning.” She says. “You have been asleep almost six hours. We were supposed to leave earlier, but they had to dismount the wings from your fighter to get it onboard the cargo aircraft.”

“So I guess I'm riding with you then, huh?” You ask, grabbing your poncho liner and cramming it in your bag- which has occupied it's same spot for the week you've been here.

Katya nods. “It will be nice to have you there.” She says. “We hardly talk anymore.”

1/2
>>
“Yeah, uh... sorry about that.” You say, sheepishly.

She shrugs, helping you grab the few unpacked items and handing them to you. No time to shower, you guess, and you won't be changing either, but whatever. You've smelled worse, you're sure.

You can't think of when, but you're sure you have.

A passenger van waits for you outside, and you all climb in, the driver rolling off before the door even slides closed. One short ride later, and you're checking into the flight line, looking at your ride.

The C-5 is a big, big bird- even with your fighter loaded, and the girl's 'main' strikers, there's space to spare. The senior loadmaster greets you as you enter the aircraft, directing you up to the passenger deck.

The bird will be headed north, well inside friendly fighter coverage the entire time. From here, you'll land at Elmendorf, then from there south to Washington state and on to California.

You're kind of excited to be going home, but at the same time, part of you would rather just stay downrange till the job was done. It sucks to go home, knowing you have to leave again.
>>
>>24026190
>“We hardly talk anymore.”

“How many do you see?”

“Three. No, four. We've hit the jackpot, Cookie. Look, they've even got a bunch of small patrol ships around.”

“I wish you'd stop calling me that, Rae.”

“You seem to like it when Odessa calls you that.”

“...Clear the coms.”

“Aye aye, ma'am.”

Natsumi floated next to Boser, the two of them waiting for Kuykendall and Caulders to stop their banter and decide how to proceed. The sun has begun to set, giving them the perfect lighting to see their targets and evade retaliation. Why haven't they started moving yet? The Martians are going about their business none the wiser, just begging to be attacked.

“Alright. Rae and I will take the supply ships. Ogawa, Boser, you two take the piers and small ships. Set timers for five minutes. After the fireworks, let loose and just make sure you don't get in too deep, alright?” Kuykendall said over the radio, diving back down to depth.

“Understood,” Natsumi replied. It's time.

“Good. Let's move out.”

Everyone split up, headed for their targets. Natsumi, having noted the strangely large number of Martians loitering about the piers, chose to set her charges there. She moved carefully, making sure to stay under ships when able, keeping close to the bottom to avoid detection. When the Sun fully sets, she'll have to use her red light and give away her position, but for now...

Click. Perfect. The piers were made of native materials and were magnetic. The powerful magnets in the satchel adhered to the flimsy pier effortlessly. Natsumi turned a timer, setting it for about five minutes, then let go. The charge was ready, ticking slowly to its destruction. With a smirk, she moved on to the next pier, quickly repeating the procedure. Two piers later, she backed off, timers about to go.

And boy did they go.

A sudden cascade of explosions ripped through the lake, shockwaves crashing against the projected magical shield that protected the witches from water pressure and harm. There was no need to worry about light any longer, flaming wrecks and search lights flooding the area with double-edged vision. An alarm overhead went off as Martians scrambled to save their comrades and search for the attackers.

“Boom! Boom! Boom! They didn't know what hit them!” Caulders celebrated as the final ship exploded, a gaping hole in its side. “That'll teach 'em to float an inch over the water!”

“I hope not,” Kuykendall commented. “Watch out, the patrol ships are-”

Several sharp explosions shake the water.

“Nevermind.”

Natsumi smiled, her heart beating wildly. Here was something she could make share in her chaos without guilt. The supply port was burning! But it was so easy. Surely there should be some sort of challenge?

“Watch out! Telebots!” Kuykendall cried.

“I have your back,” Boser told Natsumi. “To your left.”
>>
>>24026303
Not that that's a bad thing mind you.
>>
>>24026343
Natsumi spun around, neutral buoyancy holding her in midwater. The fires had trouble illuminating the waters evenly, strange shadows cast about. She strained to see, odd shapes moving about but no sign of the telebots.

“There!” Caulders cried, firing a torpedo. It surged forward, cutting a path through the thick medium as it drove onward to the faint glint of steel. The telebot operator must have had the same problems as Natsumi, for it made no effort to dodge. Caulders' perfectly lead shot crashed into the metallic facsimile of a Martian, shredding it into a thousand pieces as it detonated. The brief flash of light revealed a dozen others beside it, all headed towards Natsumi.

“Look out,” Boser cautions, bringing her own launcher to bear. It spat out a torpedo of its own, flying into the group of machines. They had seen it coming, though, and it flew past without touching a single one. It continued until it hit the wreck of a patrol boat, rocking the water with a superfluous shockwave.

Natsumi grunted, choosing the harpoon gun instead. She fired at the leading bot, a much faster projectile slicing through the water as it approached its target. Its sharp head poked right through the minimal armor of the machine, traveling straight through the sensitive components and rendering it useless. Its ally crashed into the suddenly motionless mass of metal, getting caught in its useless tentacles. It struggled for a moment before Kuykendall's torpedo found it, removing it and the dead mass from the fight.

“Move!” Kuykendall ordered, gesturing towards the piers. “We need cover!”

Indeed they did. The telebots began to wave their mechanical limbs, all sorts of menacingly sharp instruments on their ends. They quickly closed the gap despite their losses, whatever means of propulsion they used working well in the water. Natsumi fired two more harpoons, brow furrowing in anger as they bounced harmlessly against an angled surface.

She ducked behind a ruined support of the pier, reloading her harpoon gun. Dammit. The telebots weren't supposed to be here! They're used to protect vital harbors and menace human ships at sea, not loiter in a backwater river! They latch on to ships with powerful harpoons of their own, penetrating the metal skin like paper. They stay with the ship, reporting its position until a detonation would be opportune. The weapon had only recently come into use by the Martians proper, and they had a devastating effect on the naval war. Their explosives weren't enough to cripple a cruiser anywhere but its rudder and propellers, but the strikes they called in...

Natsumi shook. Heh. Hahahah. Here's the challenge she wanted! Let them try to stab her with their implements. That would only make them bigger targets. She darted out from her cover, catching a pair of bots off guard. Flanked, they didn't have time to respond before she planted two firm harpoons into their sides, disabling them. It wasn't as satisfying as fighting a flesh and blood Martian, but it'd do.

“Get out! There's more on the way!” Kuykendall ordered from somewhere over the radio. “Ogawa! Rae! You're too deep in!”

“I'm coming, I'm coming!” Rae yelled angrily.

Natsumi opened her mouth to reply, but had to close it again. Four telebots rounded the sunk wreck of a supply ship, spotting her. “That may be a problem,” she replied, ducking again behind her support.

“Ogawa!”

Natsumi laughed. Well. Let's see how many I can take out. She loaded her harpoon gun once more, then grabbed her torpedo launcher. In a smooth action, she spun out once more, firing a torpedo with minimal aiming. The lead bot responded in time, dodging the torpedo, but met instead a harpoon. His fellow behind him caught the torpedo, exploding into a cloud of debris. The other two dodged her harpoons, several more bots following them.

Shit. They raised their tentacles, ready to pierce her shield and flesh. Without a choice, she backed up, desperately trying to reload her weapons. As she crashed against the rising ground, she spotted an opening to her left. An escape route! She could regroup with the others!

An explosion knocked debris into the water, several chunks crushing a bot in front of her. Natsumi looked up to see where it had come from. The facility! The rescue operation was under way! She looked at the opening, then to the bots.

Harumi.

She hesitated for a moment, saving her life. A telebot appeared, blocking her escape route; had she gone, she would almost have certainly been killed. With her choice made for her, Natsumi turned her back to the telebots.

She began to climb.

>>
>>24026529
I'm not really seeing how this was waifuing.
>>
>>24026529

Actually, the votes were in favour of finding Ice.
>>
>>24026712

by how much? it looked really close when I called it, but my count may have been off. I had... 17 for sleep and 15 for finding Ice
>>
>>24026703

>If the choice comes up, deny the opposing waifu.

Like that time we first got the letter. The logical thing would have been to bring it to the CO to report it (In fact, not doing so is a military offense).

A good number were just voting to show it to Katya.
>>
>>24026737

Boss, 4 of them are votes to sleep on top or at the feet of ice.
>>
>>24026794
*Shrug*

Whatever, Fronk was obviously exhausted and I chose the option that reflected best his state of mind. If you want to interpret it as waifuing then more power to you, isn't like the Ice side is any more blameless.
>>
At least now we are testing things in the States Frank will be able to chill for a while.

So, where the fuck as Mouse & TW89 been?
