You don't really need to know the lore to have giant robot battles. The rules are also pretty great in that while you can do fucking anything you want with them, you can still have a very entertaining and fulfilling game at even the most basic level.
I also wouldn't describe BT as very "dour", or at least not in the same way as 40k. It's mostly just... fucking huge, and there's always a war (or 20) going on.

I thought there was some official text floating around that said you can't kill Kaijus with such weaponry because they'd explode and release deadly fallout everywhere; hence, they have to build Jaegers to go in and beat the Kaijus into submission with their fists? Cameo personages in the lore of BattleTech include Seymour Skinner, Char Aznable (reportedly killed in action, but suspiciously served in the Zeta battallion), Madoka Kasuga, Benton Frasier, a planet named after Captain Harloc, the entirety of the cast from Buckaroo Banzai, Hardy HarHar, and an entire mercenary unit named Canned Heat.

Also, kaiju. There's a mercenary unit that specializes in making a side job of propping their mechs up as giant monsters and then rampaging in life-sized props for kaiju movies.
