Welcome, /tg/, to Demi Quest! The previous threads can be found on suptg under the tag Alex Hanger or Demi Quest. Note that under Demi Quest only the ones in 2013 are relevant. I'm about... thirty minutes early from what I said, but better early than late, right?

Now, as a reminder, rolls in this quest are based on the stats. On the sheet the blue boxes are the stats of the main character, and the green boxes are the stats of our Demi, Imperator. I only accept rolls linked to the post asking for them. In example, a Body roll without bonuses for Imperator would be the first three linked.

Now, last time we arrived at a base far back from the front line, where we were introduced to Commander Zagurat, Commander of one of the Wings in the Empire's Fourth Legion, as well as three other new pilots: Rallan Twist, Salaya Vortez, and Danny Melon. Being teamed with Twist for a two on two battle against Vortez and Melon, you fought valiently, and defeated them with a combination of sheer luck and superior planning.

Passing your test, you gathered your fellow pilots and headed to the mess hall. Treating them to a drink, you learned more about them and their histories, and decided to tell them a bit more about yourself.

And that leads us to here, where we will form a bit of our pilot's history before properly beginning. Your choices are many, my friends. Who were or are your parents? What were or are their jobs? Any notable family besides? And what of you, Alex Hanger? Did you distinguish yourself in the academy? Do you have any hobbies?
>>
>>23911732
...Oops. It was jsut pointed out to me by a friend that we are ACE Hanger, not Alex. I'm a stupid. Sorry, I'm still obviously new at this.

Hail to you, Doctor, a fine day in this man's Empire!

I suggest that good Alex's parents should come from the civilian sector, and have worked in the Imperial Propaganda Ministry, as was suggested last we met. I agree it was an interesting suggestion.

Perhaps we has an uncle or ancestor who was known as a Demi pilot, driving us to try for this position along with our fervent patriotism gifted to us by our parents?
>>
>>23911732
I still think a family from the Press and Propaganda Corps is good. A large family, probably with several siblings, all of whom are in some governmental department or another, from joining the parents in the Propaganda corps, to desk jobs to infantry to whatever else, since the family is keen on doing your duty to the Empire.
>>
>>23911763

We could be Alex "Ace" Hanger, that way both are correct and the tags remain accurate.
>>
>>23911804
This is good, some ancestor who distinguished themselves as a Demi pilot, making Alex determined to live up to their example.
>>
>>23911732
As for friends, most likely Alex has had a fair few, he seems friendly enough from what we've seen of him so far, he probably still keeps in touch with some of his friends from the academy when he has the chance.
>>
>>23911872

I agree, though for my part it is a desire for connections and resources more than sentiment.
>>
>>23911885
I would say that Alex probably doesn't distinguish between the two. People who have the skills to help him out are people he can respect as equals (or almost equals at least), and therefore people he considers friends in his own way.

>>

That would make a funny sort of sense as a guilty pleasure. Trashy novels detailing the unbelievable lives of Demi pilots.
>>
>>23911819
We'll go with this, and add Ace as a tag. Ah, I cannot believe I did that. Sorry again, everyone.

>>23911804
>>23911805
The Press and Propaganda corps are the Empire's branch of government that controls and crafts ninety percent of the information within the Empire. From the basic posters and fliers advertising military and government service, to the state run newspaper, and even the mail service is one of their arms. It's also a lesser known fact that they handle the introduction of immigrants and converts from barbarian tribes and foreigners to the population and lifestyle of the Empire.

Sound alright to you lot?
>>
>>23911918

Acceptable.

>>23911924

I approve of this suggestion. I believe we may also have partaken in tabletop wargaming in order to hone our strategic thinking.

Alrighty. So our parents were in the Press and Propaganda corps, as were several other members of the Hanger family. Our family has a history and a knack for service, from government work to infantry grunts. Hell, our grandfather, Machius Hanger, was a hero in the Tenth Legion, the first pilot in your family. His example fueled our drive to be a pilot, and to be the best pilot we can be.

His stories also fueled our guilty pleasure: Reading trashy novels about heroic, fictional, Demi pilots. It's our main hobby, besides training, though we also dabble in table-top strategy games, to help hone our understanding of tactics.

Our large family has given us an appreciation for those with strong skills, and given us a habbit and knack for making friends with them. Gathering allies and comrades is something we enjoy almost as much as our novels.

Anything more?

Alright then. With our history crafted, we return to the game.

After sharing drinks with our fellow pilots, the first round on you, then the second on Vortez, the others all say they have business to attend to. Danny Melon, who you will recall is the daughter of the Head Commander of the Tenth Legion, explains she is off to write a letter to her father. Rallan Twist says he's off to go talk to his Engineer about a handful of ideas he had for upgrading his Demi, who he has named Vox. Salaya Vortez is off to go check up on her trashed machine, which she has named Apex, and talk to her Engineer about the repairs.

It's evening now, the sun will be setting in a handful of hours, and then it will be lights out. Tomorrow you will be assigned to your Legion and sent out to your new homes. Until then though, the base is yours to roam.

What would you like to do? Also, to those still wanting a side-arm, every Demi cockpit has a sidearm stored under the seat. If you want one so bad, you can go grab it.
>>
>>23912345

I would like to visit Imperator. The machine is due attention for it's valiant efforts in the past fight, and our engineer may well be lonely.
>>
>>23912345
Let's go chat to our engineer, we're going to be working with him from now on I assume. So it would be good to get a better feel for the guy and his skills.

No need. Imperial Pilot Training is a powerful trait. Gave you your first points in all your stats, gives you a +1 to Mind rolls regarding almost anything related to military matters, and also teaches you the sign language used by Engineers to communicate with their Pilots.

Since we seem to have consensus, writing now.
>>
With both Vortez and Twist bringing them up, you are reminded you really should go meet with the other part of your piloting trio, your Engineer. He will handle all the repairs, modifications, and upkeep on Imperator, as well as serving as a medic if you are injured. This is, of course, not counting the high speed calculations he was running earlier to assist with your aiming.

You head out of the mess and start the long walk to the Temple Hangar on the edge of the camp. You enjoy the feeling of pride welling in your chest: You're a pilot. A real pilot. Ever since you were a child you dreamed of climbing into a machine like the one your grandfather always told stories about piloting. You were dissapointed back in the academy, when you never could get a great handle on melee combat like him, but you've grown to accept your own set of skills.

Stepping into the Temple Hangar, you look around. Three of the mounted Demi are surrounded by huge curtains, hiding their holy forms as they go through repairs. You spot Twist with a notebook chatting with an Engineer girl infront of one. Vortez bouncing up and down and chatting with a male Engineer infront of the other.

You head to your own. "Hello? May I have a word?" You ask, over the sound of a loud metallic squeeling. It cuts off, and after a moment, 098 steps out. He's traded his heavy robes for much lighter ones with a heavy leather apron and elbow length leather gloves, all splattered with blue and light purple liquid. He smiles, removing a pair of goggles, and signs to you: "How may I be of service, sir?"

How do you respond?
>>
>>23912664

" Service? Oh no, I came to thank you, for your aid in the past battle. You and I are to be forged together in combat, so I thought I would get to know the man watching my back better. Of course, if you prefer, we could just talk about the Demi."

Wasn't Melon's father 6th Legion? Or am I recalling wrong?
>>

Doctor, What background knowledge does Ace know about Engineers? Are they like priests devoted to Demis? How are they viewed and treated by most of society?
>>
>>23912717
>>23912740
"Service? Oh no, I came to thank you, for your aid in the past battle. You and I are to be forged together in combat, so I thought I would get to know the man watching my back better." You explain, smiling happily. He nods, smiling. You ask him several questions, and he dutifully explains.

He's trained all his young life to do the duties befitting his kind, and this is his first assignment, same as yours. It was, in fact, his first live-fire experience, and he is pleased with his work and how you did. He explains that his specialty is high speed calculations regarding wind, range, target and shooter speed and location, etcetera. It aids in the pilot's combat ability, letting him be quicker and more accurate with their, or more specifically your, shots.

He's eager to discuss the Demi, explaining repairs are going quickly, and that he has replaced most of the damage done already, but is still working on repairing the legs.

This is a good time to explain XP. You earned two from the battle. Well, you earned one, and I gave one for the mistakes I made regarding a certain predator's Body score. Stats are raised by spending XP equal to the rank you desire, and traits are bought based on what you want them to do. I'll assign an XP value to your requests. I will probably work out a more solid chart or tree later for traits, but that is it for now.

Anything you would like to ask about specifically?

>>23912892
Engineers are a serperate species than humans. Universally with white skin and hair, they have eye color that matches precious gems, with onyx, sapphire, and emerald being the most common, but ruby, topaz, and even opal are also possible. They are said to have an innate connection with spirits and the earth, and are the slave race of the Empire's humans.

>>23912838
...yes. I'm a stupid. I was thinking about Ace's grandfather being Tenth Legion. My bad.
>>
>>23913079
I'd actually be tempted to spend our 2xp on raising our Body to 2. While body isn't something we're going to focus on, being long range and stealthy in general, our exam proved how useful it is when things go badly.

>>

He already said about attributes, the cost is equal to the value you want to have. Hence why Body is doable, since our natural body score is 1, so we could buy it up to 2 with our 2xp.
>>
>>23913183
For yourself, too much to count. For your Demi, we'll call it... 2XP to upgrade the optics, giving a bonus to either perception or ranged vision. 3XP for both if you want to save up, or two now and one later.

A cloak would be nothing. A ghillie cloak would be... let's call it 1XP.

>>
>>23913280
yep
>>
>>23913280

>>
>>23913280
Indeed, we can save fancy special upgrades for later, right now I'll settle for being harder to kill.
>>
You spend a short time chatting with 098 regarding possible upgrades, and suggestions as to how you could better yourself. He suggests working on your physical abilities, as it's important to be able to take a hit and to be able to climb and maneuver to the places where a sniper would be most useful. You take that to heart and resolve to work out some more, and he begs your leave to return to work. He slips back under the curtaisn and that metallic squeeling lights up again after a moment.

So with him back to being busy, what do you wish to do? Check up with your buddies? Look around? It's close to nightfall now, so you can take probably one more action before you need to hit the barracks for the night.

You head on outside, looking around for any of the other pilots. It only takes a moment for you to spot Melon, coming out of the barracks and heading towards the courier office. You have to trot to keep up with her, but when she notices you she stops and waits.

"Good evening. I was hoping we could talk a bit, if you have the time." You say, smiling happily. She nods, smiling a bit. "Sure, I was just going to drop off my letter." She starts walking again, and you follow.

WHat do you wish to talk about?
>>
>>23913658
About the differences between shooting on foot and shooting in a Demi.
>>
>>23913658

>>
>>23913658

Lets ask about where she wanted to be assigned. If I recall, it was the Legion of her father, but its a good conversation starter. We could also insinuate we would not mind being assigned where she is going, as we were impressed by her decision making in the field.
>>
You compliment her on her decisions, and her fighting ability during the test. You trade a few tricks regarding the different between fighting on foot and in Demi, and that leads to talking about how fighting at different ranges works.

"You're pretty obviously a sniper, me I do my best work at medium range and against infantry. My rifle shoots these little metal balls, really good at tearing soft tissue up, but bad against armor." She explains.

You nod, then motion at the letter she hands off to the courier. "You said that was your dad, right? Valus Melon, head of the Sixth Legion?" You lead, curious.

"Yeah, that's my dad. Pride of the eastern front, terror of the jungles. Good money says I'll be working under him." She explains. "If he follows the example of my big brother and my cousin, I won't be in the wing directly under him, but he will keep me in the same general area."

What else do you want to talk about? If you can think of nothing, we can go ahead and move forward.

>controversy ahorstit

>>
Maybe we could work on making a code to send undecipherable messages to our group.

We might end up fighting on the same battlefields, and being able to have a private conversation might be a good thing.
>>
>>23914092
That's what radio is for, and beyond that, I would assume we are well versed in military hand signals and the like.
>>
You wish eachother the best, and go your seperate ways. You head to the barracks and find the bunk with your name taped to it. You crawl in, and even with your excitement and pride thumping in your chest, you're out fast.

Your sleep is dreamless and fast, and before you know it, Twist is waking you up. "Come on, Hanger. Time to get a move on. You want to be late for the next part of your life?" He asks, grinning widely. You drag yourself up and get dressed, and with bags in hand, you head out of the barracks. Three huge trucks, each big enough to store two Demi in the back, sit near the Temple Hangar. You and Twist meet up with Vortez and Melon, and head to the Commander's office. You present yourself before Zagurat, saluting proudly.

As far as you can recall: First Legion is the Emperor's Guard, performing the holy duty of guarding the Imperial Palace. It seems odd to have an entire Legion guarding a single palace, but one must remember that the place is the size of a city, and has a metropolis surrounding it. Fourth is on the western front, the west coast where war with an aquatic species is going on. Slow going, but that lets the people there have a lot of down time. Sixth Legion is in the deep, wet, monster summining barbarian infested jungles of the east, fighting a guerilla war that is going rather well.

Good thing we have the in-built shotguns, I think we are going to be using them more than the sniper.

"When I fought there the fighting was less intense, but the tribes there, the Verra, focused on summoning outsiders that took the form of monstrous animals. They came out of the jungles like roaches out of shadows. As a sniper you can expect to be in the field the majority of the time, spending a lot of time ether waiting for targets or out actively hunting targets of opportunity. Police work will also be common." She explains. You nod, and after a few more moments of everyone chatting amonst yourselves, you scatter to go watch your Demi be loaded up.

"I'm looking forward to being in the same Wing, Hanger. We will probably get to work together pretty often." Melon says, as you watch Engineers load up Imperator and the Demi that Melon named Cheshire.

Maybe some time in the future. It's not uncommon to have specialists in different Legions work together for big jobs.

>>23915153
Of course! In theory your weapons could even fire underwater. Which would have been a thing that happens often if you had been rolled Twist as your partner.

And to those of you who were hoping to team up with one of the other two: Don't worry. I planned out the basics for three campaigns then decided which to go with using just a dice roll. You will get to team up with them in the future, I'm not wasting these notes.
>>
>>23915363
Tech levels are weird. Weapons are bronze and iron blades and such, but printing presses are advanced, while non-Demi guns are restricted to single shot, usually flintlocks or wheellocks. The internet is not a thing, but couriers are super reliable with carrying mail.
>>
>>23915399
Oh okay, then forget the email stuff and just be sure and ask them to let us know how they're getting on when they get the chance to send mail.

Twist admits he is looking forward to what will hopefully be a peaceful posting, and Vortez, while pleased with being in First Legion, is dissapointed she is not likely to see much action. You spot 098 helping load Imperator, and head on over.

"Did you hear? We're heading off to the jungle, Sixth Legion." You explain. He nods happily and signs back. "I heard. It certainly explains the buckets of pain. Brown and green camo. Are you nervous?" He asks.

Get out our latest trashy Demi Pilot novel, ask Melon if she's ever read any of these sort of books. We could use that as an opportunity to ask her about her hobbies, which will help to work towards building a proper friendship with our ally. Ace loves useful friends after all.

Then when that's all said and done, get to reading.

"Say, Melon, you ever find the occassion to read? I rather like these old adventure books, trashy and unrealistic they may be." You ask, pulling one of your novels out of your bag. One of your favorates, it features the struggles Mariana Marshall, pride of the Ninth Legion, in her war against the demon princess, Macha. Romance, drama, combat, and a pilot who fights against all odds and hell itself!

Melon shrugs. "I have now and then, but I do not have a lot of free time. Father always insisted I spend most of my time training and practicing. No free time when you're the heir to that sort of legacy. May I?" She asks, holding out a hand towards the book.

Loan her your FIRST EDITION, SIGNED COPY of The Marshall Trials?! Can our inner neckbeard part with such a tome? Am I just making up boring junk while seeing what I roll here?

You keep an eye on her as you fish out a different one to read. Everything is going well untill she takes a bottle from the cold box set in the back with you and opens it up. While reading your FIRST EDITION, SIGNED COPY. Your eye twitches uncontrollably, but you calm as she seems to be being rather careful.

You calm down and wait, talking idly with 098 as you wait. He has several ideas for modifications to add to Imperator. Your discussion last as you head down a heavily wooded road, the landscape slowely turning more humid and more thick, turning into thick jungle. Your discussion is interrupted as the radio linked to the front of the vehicle crackles to life.

"Pilots, please respond, we have incoming transmissions from the base you were being transported to." They inform you. You pick up the hand-held and reply.

"This is Hanger, we understand. What are our orders?" You ask.

"Head back to the Demi and load up. We're going to stop a mile out, and you're to head in and provide long range support." You are ordered. The four of you head back, Melon putting your book into her bag. I need a Soul roll as you climb in.

You breath. Your fists clinch, shotguns loading with a light thunk. You shed your tarp, stepping off the back of the truck. "We got five Abominations attacking the base, two guard Demi on the defense. The other two posted to this base are off on patrol. We are coming from the west, with the attackers to the north. The guards are in he base, holding attention. What's the plan?" Melon details the situation and asks.
>>
>>23917138
I pick at them if my shots draw one or more towards us you open up on them keep it simple
>>
>>23917138

" Melon, we need high ground to set up Imperator. Positioning is vital to bring our sniper support to bear. Can you scout ahead and find advantageous ground?"
>>
>>23917138
Shoot them from a distance to get them off the guards and she goes in while they're moving towards us. The guards will be able to attack their backs, or take a breather to back us up.
>>
>>23917138
First things first, we need to locate the best vantage point. Scout for an optimal spot, then we can pick them off. Melon should move up a little from our position, so that she can react quickly to any emergency situations as they arise either with us or at the base.

Also, Doctor, do we know how this whole summoning thing works? If abominations are attacking the base, does that mean the people who summoned them are nearby? If so, would killing the summoners end the abominations?
>>
>>23917229
You send Melon ahead to scout, and you follow behind. Seeking a vantage point to provide sniper assistance to the base. In short order you find an enormous tree, which you climb up and brace yourself in. You set up your rifle as you scope out the pray. The Abominations are massive, gorrilla like beasts, furless, with white, slick skin. Slits open on their back, flicking and squirming with tentacles that snap out to strike at infantry. One of them stands out as being far more humanoid, and much taller, floating a touch above the ground. Two large, nearly twin, sky blue painted Demi, with massive arms fend off the gorrilla beasts, trading blows with them. Pick your target, and roll me 7 dice for your sniping.

(Abominations are summoned by circles of shamans. They must constantly chant and pray to keep up the summoning. The strongest summoners and Abominations can do solo summonings.)

You snap up your shotguns and blow it apart. It's torso splatters over the trees as it goes down. Your attention snaps back to the base where the two Demi have prevaled over the other two Abominations and have settled in to keep an eye out. You can see infantry rallying. "They're probably forming patrols to hunt for the circles. We should get down there, to help or atleast help guard while they work." Melon suggests. Do you agree or do you stick out here until ordered in?

You agree, and Melon takes lead with her rifle. You sweep down to the base, and are met by the twin Demi. "Imperator and Cheshire, reporting and ready to assist." You say, over the radio.

"Rock and Roll, good to meet you." The one on the left indicates itself, then it's twin. ...you're not going to remember which is which, you already know it. It's a woman's voice speaking. "We're in charge while the Commander is off helping seek out the circles. We need help clearing out the corpses so we can close up the gates. Come on."

Helping the twins, you and Melon assist in healing out the enormous bodies and leaving them outside the base walls. Rock (or is it Roll?) rips the head off of one of the gorrillas before they close the gates. "The corpses will dissipate when the circles are destroyed. We'll know when the commander and patrols succeed when this dissapears." She holds up the head. "You, sniper, Imperator, get up there and set up a look-out. Rifle girl, Cheshire, set to patrols of the walls. Rock and I need to tend to repairs." She indicates a stone circle roughly fifteen feet tall, with short stone walls surrounding it. Tall enough that a Demi can easily see over the walls, and an excellent place for a sniper.

I'm sure you have questions as you wait. What do you ask of Rock and Roll?
>>
>>23918796
How fast are these things?
>>
>>23918796
I should note, of course, that along with the twins are swarms of infantrymen running about trying to see to wounded and damaged buildings, as well as watching from the tops of the walls. Everyone seems rushed and nervous, rightfully so if attacks like that are as common as you fear.

>>23918796

" How many types of creature do these insurgents field? Are these common?"

And yes, if they are fighting the empire, they are insurgents, even on their own land.
>>
You question them, and they are glad to answer. "A dozen atleast, the simians and men are most common. They move a time and a half as fast as a normal Demi, quick and agile in their home. Attacks like this are not too common, maybe once a week or so. We don't know how common their summonings are, but they rarely last more than a day. The shamans can't keep themselves concious and chanting longer than that. Go for the men shaped ones over the simians. If you see anything beyond those, fall back and report it, you'll be told what to do from there." They explain.

It's a blessedly uneventful wait before the beasts start to dissolve. Rock and Roll are able to slow down and pop open their Demi, revealing twin, pale skinned girls with short red hair and green eyes. "Commander Retter should be back-" "-any time now. He'll debrief you-" "-and help you get settled. Until then, let us be the first-" "-to welcome you to your new home. This place is a mess in a hellhole of a jungle-" "-but it's our mess, by the gods, and we'll hold it till kingdom come." They take turns speaking.

You get the feeling it's going to be a long posting.

Then you wonder when Melon is going to give you your book back.

Yeah. A long freaking posting.
