Fair warning: I'm a lazy cunt and didn't rebuild the image library like I should have. got caught up playing minecraft. haha.

anyway, that said, no other real news. Updates ought to be a bit quicker today, but they'll probably still be a bit slower than usual because of the pictures thing. sorry in advance.

“You're up early, sir.”

One of the techs greets you- You are up early, after all- but the ground crew is well into their shift. They were hitting the hangar as you were going into crew rest, making sure your birds were ready for the coming mission. Normally, this kind of prep would be saved for something huge, you think- then correct yourself. To the Japanese, this is huge. No one - barring the martians- has successfully invaded the home islands, and they intend to keep it that way.

Despite Ice's briefing, the American role in the mission is mostly support. Your assigned sector is small, relative to the Japanese ones, and you're not expected to see much action- if not for Katsumi and Ayumi, you wouldn't be seeing any action at all. Your inclusion, as it turns out, is last-minute- you're only there because the imperial princess demanded it.

The aviation crew crawls over your bird, her access panels hanging open, an APU and diagnostics cart hooked to her internals. The Twin's craft is in a similar state, ordinance crews wheeling out stacks of missiles- both short and medium range varieties and the huge metal cans containing hundreds of linked 25mm cannon shells. Air to ground missiles sit in racks, waiting to be fit to the jets as well. While the majority of your load is air to air, you are expected to go after targets of opportunity as they arise.

1/2
>>
Over at the small forest of striker stands, the comparatively few striker techs go over the girl's machines, using small handheld devices to run diagnostic tests on the magical turbines, shield foci, and various systems that require magic. You're not too sure how that all works, to be honest- magic batteries? Magic APUs? Hamsters on wheels? You don't know, but you're pretty sure it's not the last one. A group of armorers goes over their weapons- the stacked firepower of a traditional infantry company, easily- replacing worn out components and checking for wear and tear. They've been at it all night- longer even than your techs- and the coffeepot on their table is proof enough of that.

You're the second one up- Slider's already in here, helping the techs where she can, applying just a bit of sparkles to a difficult to read system. That's a job befitting the XO- make sure everything is running, so the boss can concentrate on getting you all through it alive. Still, you know that Ice will be down here soon enough- you heard her getting up to shower as you were putting the coffee on- and you can't help but to think back to the last time you two talked before a mission.

And that you got shot down there at the end of it.

Still, there's plenty to do- you could always help the avionics crew troubleshoot some systems, and the ordinance guys always appreciate a helping hand lifting weapons in place. You could go chat with Slider, or you could go see if the armorers or striker techs need a hand, and maybe learn something useful from them.

[] Help the avionics team. You're not as good as Merlin, but you can help out some!

[x] Talk with Slider! She's usually got the inside line on what's going on around here.

Somewhere in the bay, someone has a boombox playing- though right now, you can't readily identify the song, it's something by skynyrd.

You still maintain that, had you been flying that plane, they'd still be alive.

You see Slider top to kneel next to a young tech who's quietly cursing, struggling with something inside one of the backup F-14A strikers the squadron keeps. Quietly, the two converse, then Slider reaches inside, the tech watching intently.

“Hey Slider!” You call, striding across the hangar and waving. She looks up. smearing some grease from her cheek with a sleeve and nodding.

“One sec Frank.” She says, looking back over at the tech. “See? You can tell, you can get it to click.” She reaches back inside the striker unit and something gives an audible click.

The tech nods. “Thanks ma'am.” He says, nodding. “Sometimes those foci are a bastard to slot back in, and it's really hard to tell if they're socketed right without one of you around to test it.”

Slider nods. “Go ahead and close this one up and move on to the next.” The tech nods, grabbing his tools and moving down the line to the next stand.

“Ok, Frank. Walk with me real fast.” Slider says, standing up.

“So what gives?” You ask, after you two are out of immediate earshot of most of the crew. “No way the Japs wanted their princess sidelined for this one. Maybe us, Maybe, but her?”

She looks over at you. “You scare her, you know that?” She says, quietly.

[] “I... what?”
[] “That's not what I asked, Slider.”

[x] “I... what?”

“I.... wait, what?” You ask, suddenly more confused. You're starting to think that confusing and infuriating are part and parcel of being a witch, just like magic. And tails.

“Ice.” Slider says. “She and Katsumi fought over this one. Katsumi wanted us to be the spearhead, along with a pair of the IJN's best and some of their witches. Ice was terrified you'd play the hero if shit went pear shaped and she'd- we'd- loose you again. Maybe we wouldn't get you back this time.”

She shakes her head. “Fuck, Frank, we're all worried about you. You're good- the twins tell me the shit you make that fighter do is stuff they can barely copy, and Katya's been joking that you're some weird incarnation of the very concept of jet combat. The only one of us that isn't is Merlin, and that's cos that kid practically worships you.”

“So we're being sent stateside because of me?” You ask, incredulous.

Yep and I was thinking, where is a gnome located? A lung, the brain, the stomach, a testicle, or the heart?

Slider shakes her head again. “No. That one isn't any one of our faults- but we're the biggest names in the Pacific front. Your fanclub is more than enough proof the other side is watching too. Plus, they really do want us stateside to test out new gear before it starts hitting fleet units.”

“But we're being held back because of me.” You state, flatly.

Slider looks over at you. “Frank, look it from our perspective. We saw you go down in Alaska. Frank, I saw you before you crashed you-” She pauses for a second, shaking her head. “Fuck. You had no right to survive that. I was looking at a dead man.”

“We’ve flown since then! We've fought since then!” you protest.

“This is a lot like then, remember? Top cover for the strike packages, tangle with the hostile air, keep our corridor clear for whatever command wants to send through. Except now you little sister is in there and she's new. What happens if she gets in trouble, Frank?”

[] “Don't use her against me, Slider. She's a Bishop too. She can handle herself.”

[x] Both!

You hiss and take a step back, as if physically hurt by her words.

She looks at you, sadly. “I'm sorry Frank I-”

“No.” you say, heat in your voice. “First of all, don't you dare fucking use her against me. She my baby sister, yes. She's also a Bishop, and we've got a long, proud military tradition, and I'll never stand between her and her right to live up to that. She can handle herself.”

“Frank you-”

You continue, raising your voice over her half-hearted protest, well and truly pissed. “Second, in the unlikely event it becomes an issue, I'd do the same I'd do for any other witch that gets in trouble. Same as I always have. But if you girls don't get your heads screwed on fucking straight, you will be the death of me.”

You shake your head with a dark laugh. “Jesus Christ, Slider. You're all so chewed up about me not being a witch or some shit you seem to forget I'm also a fucking fighter pilot in the United States goddamned Navy, and I knew what that meant when I signed my fucking contract. I go into harms way because I want to, because I've been taught that that's my duty as a Bishop. I'd do the same thing if I was assigned to a conventional squadron.”

You pause to sigh, looking straight into Slider's eyes. Are those tears? She blinks them away before you can tell.

“Slider, please. You're one of my best friends around here. Let me do my job, and quit worrying about me.” You say, taking a step forward, holding out a hand. “I know it's like you can just quit, but you've gotta try. You get distracted worrying about me, and what's gonna happen to you?”

“Besides,” you say, with a weak grin. “I've died once, according to you. Maybe I've got a few more extra lives stashed somewhere.”

Slider's response damn near crushes your ribs. Girl's got a hell of a hug.

We are Frank Bishop. The man who gave his life and lives to tell.
Frank lives in death!
Fallen in fire and reborn from the flames.
Let our enemies tremble in fear as His divine wrath shall come over them with a flaming sword.
Sound the horns, ring the bells and pray to your heathen gods for a good man is going to war.

[x] the crews got this. Let's go make sure the witches are ready to go.

You return the hug, trying not to notice the occasional glance of the ground crews.

Slider breaks away, letting you finally draw a full breath again. She's got a hell of a hug, that one.

“I'll talk to her, Frank. It's not going to be overnight, but I'll talk to her. But She already lost you once, she's determined to not do it again. We all are.” She says.

“Slider....” You say, trailing off as she holds up a hand.

“I know, I know. But you can't tell a girl her big brother or boyfriend or whatever is going to be taunting death like you do and have her not worry herself sick. I'll talk to her- to all of them- but they really can be selfish bitches.” She says, smiling there at the last.

You nod. “Fair enough. I'm going to head back to check on- hey, speak of the devil.” You say, turning to head back to the squadron building, then stopping when you see Merlin walk in with Ice.

Merlin smiles and waves, and you wave back as she starts towards you, while Ice looks over at you and Slider, then heads to the striker stands herself, chatting with the techs there.

1/2
>>
Merlin runs over, enfolding you in her customary hug- nowhere near as rib-crushingly strong as Slider's, and well padded by her jacket- the one you got her to replace yours. You'd battled on if you wanted to make it the same size as yours or not, and eventually settled on having it be an exact copy- size and everything. Only difference was the age- yours is worn down, hers is new.

“Morning Merlin.” you say, patting her on the back. Slider smiles, shaking her head at you two, then walks off to talk to Ice. Their glances in your direction indicate they're talking about you.

“Morning Frank!” Merlin beams. “I had them do some work on the sensors, I need to go check on that, you wanna come with?”

[x] “No, you know what you're doing with that stuff way more than I do. I'mma go see if I can find my sister.”

You shake your head. “Nah. You know what you're doing with that gear way better than I do, and I need to go see if I can scare up Jess and talk to her a bit.”

Merlin nods. “Ok Frank! Oh, I think I saw your sister outside this morning, running. How come you never do that?”

You grin. “You just never see me do it.”

Merlin looks at you, dubiously. “If you say so.” She says, clearly not believing you. “Don't take too long, ok?”

You nod.

You bump into Jessica just outside the hangar doors as she's walking in, chatting with her two classmates.

“Hey Frank!” She says. “You excited? We're excited it's our first day and-”

“Can it, Jess. Need to talk to you a bit.” You say.

“About what?” she says, suddenly on guard. “If this is another lecture, can we skip it? I've had a bunch of those latley. Rand, Tabby, Rachel, Katya....” She ticks each one off on a finger. “Mom, Dad, gramma...”

“No, Jess. Nothing like it.” you say, laughing a bit. “Look, I have... “

“Oh, is this about your girlfriend?” Jessica says, earning a giggle from her two classmates.

“She's not my girlfriend, Jess. And she's very fucking dangerous. If she shows up, don't let her know you're related to me, and don't try and tangle with her, ok? Let us handle it.” You indicate Merlin when you say 'us'.

“Oh, that's all?” Jessica says. “Ok. She's all yours, Frank.”

“I'm not fucking around, Jessica.” You say. “She's some kind of soviet superwitch. Stay well clear of her and let us handle it, alright? Promise me.”

Jessica looks at you, appraising the look on your face. “This means a lot to you, huh?” She finally says.

You nod.

“Then I promise, Frank.” Jessica says with a nod of her own. “No matter what, I won't try to take on this witch, ok?”

“Thank you, Jess.” you say, relieved. Many things she may do, Jess will not break a promise. You look at her two friends. “that goes for you two as well. Stay well clear of this witch, alright? Call for help if you think she's after you and run. Don't try to fight her.”

They both nod after looking at each other.

Witches slowly file into the hangar, the twins arriving last, just as you're mounting your fighter.

She's loaded for bear- eight agiles and four AMRAAMs in her bays, another twelve agiles on her inboard wing hardpoints, and four AMRAAMS outboard of those, with the final wing hardpoint taken up by a half dozen 'zulu' rockets- a marine corps thing. Apparently, they'd stumbled across a stockpile of old rockets stateside, strapped limited guidance packages to them, and called it good. They're great for plinking tanks and bunkers, but lousy for much else.

The ground team can swap out one pair of hardpoints- or any of your bays, if you want, but the mix of weapons is limited, at best. There's Mk.77 Incendiary bombs available, they'd take up a hard point each, limiting you to two. There's a pair of GPU-5/As that god alone knows where they turned up from- again, they'd take a hardpoint each, and can't be internally mounted, to boot. There's plenty of 500lb and 250lb bombs, but those are pretty dinky, and if you go supersonic, they might as well be concrete filled.

[] We'll fly as-is (20 Agiles, 8 AMRAAMs, 12 lightweight AGMs)

I want Guns but...
>The GPU-5 pod, however, proved unsatisfactory in service. It was briefly tried on some Air National Guard F-16 Fighting Falcons during the 1991 Gulf War, but was removed from service after barely a day of combat use because of its very poor accuracy. Despite the cannon's impressive ballistic characteristics, the pylon mounting was not sufficiently rigid to prevent deflection, and the weapon's heavy recoil exacerbated the problem by causing pylon misalignment. Further, the GPU-5 was not integrated into the F-16's sighting system. The GPU-5 is no longer in U.S. service, although some Thai F-5E Tiger II aircraft still carry the weapon, experimented also with F-20 Tigershark.

Is there any development going on for anti-witch or generally anti-magic weaponry?
Like shield disruptors, magical null-fields or weapons aimed at harming witches despite their shields.
>>
>>23900950
Probably not, because witches in whatever country is trying to develop it would throw a shitfit, and there'd be the risk of Martians getting ahold of it.

Soviets or Martians might be working on it though.
>>
>>23900981
Why would they object development of a weapon that gives them an advantage when facing enemy witches?
It's not like they would not try to kill one-another.
>>
>>23901010
Historically they have gotten along better with each-other than with nonmagical governments, and none of them would trust regular people with anti-witch weapons even if they were supposedly allies.

Plus the Mars angle.

[x] GAU-5/A? Holy hell, that's a mini GAU-8. I want those. Right now. All over my body.

Your eyes settle on the two gunpods, and you frown. They're familiar, except... how would they get here?

Quickly, you tap the guys helping you into the cockpit on the leg. “Guys, are those...?” You trail off. One looks over his shoulder and nods. “Yessir. GPU-5/A pods. Found 'em sitting in the ammo dump, had 'em flown up here since the japs won't use the damn things.”

Your eyes narrow. “Those are 5As? Mini GAU-8s, right?”

He nods. “Yessir. They're loaded and checked out, but we didn't load them up cos we figured the rockets.....” He trails off at the look in your eye.

“I want those. Right now. All over my body.” you say, deadly serious.

“Sir, are you feeling alright?” the crewman says, looking at you with worry in his eye.

You nod. “Yeah. Can you swap the zulus out for those?”

The crewman scratches his chin. “Probably, sir. Give us a few minutes. Do all your pre engine start checklists, we'll have them swapped in a second. Miss Merlin? Can you kill your number one and number eight pylons? We're swapping weapons.” He says, and you see Merlin nod behind you.

“Frank?” She asks questioningly over the intercom.

“We're a gunfighter now, Merlin!” You respond with glee. “Two thirty millimeters, and our two twenty fives! Santa would be proud of us!”

“O...ok Frank.” She says. “Keep in mind, they don't have a lot of ammo.”

You nod, watching the ground crew pick up the guns with a forklift and drive them over, dismounting the rails for the rockets and mounting the gunpods up.

1/2
>>
“Ok.” Merlin says as they finish. “Number one and number eight pylons are both mounted now. Watch out for convergence, they're set for strafing, and they aren't linked with our internal guns, ok? They're on group three.”

“Spellcaster, check in.” Ice commands over the squadron frequency as the twins start up their engines.

The witches sound off after you call in- you're the second element lead, now, making you spellcaster three.

The witches begin rolling to the runway as you hit your canopy controls and begin rolling, the wheel blocks removed by the ground crew when they left.

The sky itself is gorgeous- you think you can see flashes of sunlight reflecting off other aircraft moving in on their own vectors, but the range is long and you're not sure.

“Ok, folks. Stick to the plan and we'll get the job done.” Ice says over the squadron net. “Frank, take your element up to about fifteen and loiter, if you get ground warnings get down, but otherwise stay up there, ok? There's pretty good radar coverage, but I'll leave it up to you if you want to go active.”

You start a gentle climb, your element spacing out a bit.

The airspace above the combat area is ugly with fighters- Japanese, Chinese, and some Soviet aircraft mixed in as well. It's the biggest furball you've ever seen. That anyone's ever seen, you'd bet.

“Ok, there they are. Lead element, follow me. Frank! Cover us!” Ice orders, the exhausts of her strikers flaring as she pours on extra speed.

[] “Alright folks. By the numbers.”
[] “Ice, there's too many down there, I'm detaching Ayumi and Katsumi. It's not fair to let them sit back anyway.”

The way I see it, witches ar likely to object, but in secret somebody will try and develop such a weapon. The advantage is too big to not look into it.
And the second enemy witches become a problem, the weapon will be used.
And at that point it is a question of time till everybody uses them and employs counterstrategies.
Relative to the other shit we use and have used, it can't be much more cruel.
Land mines, flame throwers, white phoshorous, napalm, agent orange, mustard gas, cadavers lobbed over walls, nuclear weapons, you name it.

That's true. However, there's always the omni-present threat of another Martian attack. And who knows what lurks in the depths of the oceans of Europa, or within the crushing deeps of Jupiter and Saturn.
And then there's Venus to consider.
Deploying any kind of anti-witch weapon invites aliens to deploy them. Just like the use of nuclear weapons against human targets, or of the use of any of the Planetary Defense weapons against human nations, I think the UN would come down with both feet on anyone that develops a weapon that attacks one of humanity's special weapons.
>>
>>23901306
I can see how other humans can get anti-witch weapons.
But aliens?
Who would sell guns to aliens?
It's not like anyone was not subject of an invasion of earth.
>>
>>23901330
>Weapon proliferation occurs through voluntary sales only

For real homie.
>>
>>23901330
I think there'd be a few groups that'd be more than happy to collude with the aliens. However, I don't think possible proliferation would be stopped for a different reason: regardless of the capabilities of an anti-sparkle weapon, the UN still has nukes and shit. Admittedly a crappy option, but no alien invasion's gonna come out unscathed if even a fraction of cold-war space race/nuke tech made its way to Planetary Defense arsenals
>>
>>23901330
>But aliens?
>Who would sell guns to aliens?
huehuehue

Okay, so we're talking about the possibility of an alien invasion with tech-snatching infiltrators as an argument not to develop weapons?

There are Martians already on Earth and they have psionic brainfucking powers.

Witches won The War, humanity as a whole would like them to remain as powerful as possible because of extraterrestrial threats. Therefore the development of anti-witch weaponry by any nation would be opposed by pretty much everyone.

>>

>and they have psionic brainfucking powers.
Actually, this is another good point.
The Martians proved that telepathy and psionics exist, and that their psionic radio technology can even be used against some Witches.
I highly doubt that Martian High Command back on Mars has been sitting on their tentacles; they most likely initiated crash research projects into getting into the minds of regular humans during the Martian War.

[x] “Alright folks. By the numbers.”
{x} Merlin, fire it up. Need to see if the psycho is on the way.

You watch the lead element spear into the furball, gaining your anchor point and looking down.

The fight is over the bay, mostly, and the thankfully empty IJN docks there. Several columns of smoke crawl skyward from the city proper, but it's hard to tell from what.

“Alright folks, by the numbers. Take spacing.” you order, your witches fanning out and separating from your jets, while the Twins climb above you and drop back several hundred yards.

“Merlin, fire it up.” You order over the intercom, swivelling your head, scanning for threats. It looks like the vast majority of the hostile air power is bottled up over the bay, but you can't count on that.

“Frank, we've got two groups inbound on the fight. One's pretty big, coming in from the north west. I don't know what type they are, but the Japanese didn't leave any real blocking forces there.” Merlin says.

“The other is small, high, and fast. Really fast. It's really faint, too. I think it's her.” She says, her voice quiet. “It keeps fading in and out, and I'm not sure I can keep it pegged.”

[x] Crap, we can't let that big group in. Let's get them!

You watch the incoming group- the Japanese left a mixed flight of F-15J and F-1 fighters in place, but the F-1s are pretty woefully outclassed, and the F-15s hardly make up for the lack of numbers.

Once they clear that group- and you've no doubt they will- they'll be free to dive into that furball- and there's enough fighters there to really tip the scales.

But then, you think as you turn your fighter towards the inbound group, they're never going to get that chance.

“On me guys. We can't let that group get into the fight. Ice! We're breaking station to engage a heavy group. At least twenty plus.” You call, advancing your throttle a bit and leveling out, pointing your nose directly at the projected center of the formation on your HUD.

“Merlin, how many can we handle?” You ask, keeping one on the time to intercept, and the other to the range markers. The AMRAAMs are effective against a fighter out to about 60km, and you're rapidly approaching that range.

“All of them.” She says, surprised. “It'd be hard for me to guide the missiles and keep tabs on that high bogie though, Frank. I can try, but...”

[] “Try. We need this to work, or it could turn ugly.”

Great plan, but it's probably too late, what with all of the votes previously for other things.

[x] “Ok, let her go for now. Guide the missiles”

“Ok, that's fine. Let her go for now, Merlin. Focus on the missiles.” You order, watching the kilometers melt away.

“Boss! We're engaging that big group. Be aware, Merlin tagged a bogie up high, intermittent contact. She thinks it's Stalinka. We pegged her at about angels sixty, headed this way at speed, bout a hundred miles out.” You say calmly over the squadron net.

“Thanks for the heads up,” Ice calls back. “We've got it here, just- “ She cuts out for a second, then comes back. “Just don't let anyone in till we're done here.”

You grin, the lewd joke dying on your lips before you say it in the open.

Your AMRAAMS reach out along with the twins' and the Japanese eagles' missiles- almost thirty missiles in the air, eight of them guided by Merlin. It's an awesome display of firepower, and certainly one they'd have to struggle to match.

Of the weapons, two fail to guide, and of the rest, several miss, defeated by angles, defensive countermeasures, or last second defensive maneuvering on the part of the incoming hostile fighters. Still, you counted at least ten clean kills, and another few probables or damaged- almost half the incoming bandits knocked out in an eyeblink.

Still, they press on, seemingly aware your big advantage is gone. The Japanese fighters speed to engage, heatseekers on wingtip rails and guns still anxious to go to work. They're not as outnumbered, now, but the hostiles still have more planes in the air, old and outdated though they may be.

“Ah, a lovely display my darling!” Stalinka's voice cuts across your radio. “Though surely you did not need the help of your lessers, no? Come, my love. Let our inferiors bask in our art.”

She's on you almost instantly, flaming a pair of eagles out of the sky and scattering your group like...

well, like a bullet scatters a glass bottle. Shit's not pretty.

Still, something tells you she'll focus on you, so long as no one else tries to engage, and you know you can beat her, right?

Right?
>>
And that's it for tonight!

I'm going to *try* to have a picture of Jess or Stalinka done this week, but I make no promises.

and, as always, I hope you guys enjoyed it, next week ought to be fun! I'm looking forawrd to it.

Right. We can nail her, and even if we don't, at least we're keeping her busy. She doesn't get to kill anyone today.

>>23903226

Was expecting that... If we had called out to her she might have deigned to wait... Oh well, gotta roll with it.

“I shouldn't have to tell you this anymore, but make sure your gear is properly fitted. We don't want anyone needing rescue this time.” Kuykendall's instructions washed over Natsumi, not a single word caught. “This is a delicate operation. We don't know what the Martians will do when they realize what we're really after. Do your jobs, and do them well. Leave the land operation to the men on the ground. They know what they're doing.”

“Hey, now, don't stretch the truth too much!” came a rough voice. “You'd be surprised how much of our work is spontaneous bullshit.” Its owner leaned against a bulkhead, calmly taking in the view as the witches put on their skintight dry suits.

“And what, may I ask, are you still doing here, Eddie?” Kuykendall asked.

“Figured I'd say something to the sister here before it all started. That fine with you?” His manner made it difficult for the witches to even take much offense to his presence.

“Aren't you supposed to be off the sub with your other commandos or whatever you all are?”

“Yeah, but I figure I swim well enough to make due. One of you ladies can give me a lift if needed. Besides, the 'plan' calls for someone to sneak in on the other side. Now, if I may?” He hunched over and got off the bulkhead, slowly making his way to Natsumi.

“Fine. Don't make eyes at us, either, you lech.”

“Wouldn't dream of it,” he replied, his tone of voice making it hard to tell if that was an insult or an affirmative.

“What do you want?” Natsumi asked, her voice slightly annoyed. This guy was keeping her from getting read for tonight's event. Who did he think he was?

Eddie hunched down and spoke in a low voice, barely audible in the busy launch room. “I know that look. You're messed up. Don't mess things up for your sister or my men, either. Leave the rescue to us.”

“You don't need to tell me that,” she replied curtly. “Now, if you'll excuse me...” She began unbuttoning her top.

“Of course.” He back off, standing as straight as he could in the cramped compartment. “Good luck, girls. See you in a bit.” Eddie slid out the hatch.

“He's a weird one. Maybe a touch crazy. Have you seen the stuff he's been up to?” Kuykendall said to the witch beside her.

“Eh, nothing that crazy. Kinda weird how he just walked in here while we were changing, though. Why didn't anyone make a fuss out of it?” Caulders replied.

“His craziness must have rubbed off on us,” Kuykendall shrugs. “Everyone suited up? Good. Make sure to check your substriker and satchels. We need big, noisy distractions. Things going boom tend to get the Martians' attention.”
>>
>>23903323
Natsumi looked around, having prepared her equipment thirty minutes ago. Usually the witches were split into two squads, one led by Kuykendall, the other by Natsumi. This time, though, half were sitting it out; they couldn't afford risking the operation or witches by using the less able girls. So, Natsumi was prepping with Kuykendall, Caulders, and Boser. The leaders and their right hands. Fitting, she supposed. The others were busy turning over their explosive satchels and checking their torpedo launchers. She regretted doing it earlier; now she had nothing to do.

They waited in the launch compartment for some time, pressure equalizing as they approached operational depth. This time they'd be operating near the surface, up a river in the south west of New Guinea. The sub couldn't make it all the way up there, so they'd be launching from the coast and making their own way to the enemy supply base. The operation was timed so that several supply ships would be in the area, providing plenty of targets with which to wreak mayhem. The land operation would take advantage of their distraction, infiltrating the main facility and retrieving Harumi before the Martians knew what hit them.

“Ready?” Kuykendall asked as the idle chatter died down, the time of launch drawing near.

“As I'll ever be,” Caulders replied.

“I am,” Boser said flatly.

“Yes,” Natsumi answered.

“Good.” Kuykendall picked up a phone. “Sir? Yes. Alright. Understood.” She set it back down. “About five minutes left. When the light goes on, we launch.”

Everyone nodded, moving in front of the four launch tubes that would release them into the cold waters. Helmets were fastened, oxygen tanks connected, and satchels slung. Just a little longer...

A bright red light filled the room. It was time.

“Go! Head up the river, we'll meet right before the lake!” Kuykendall cried over the radio, hopping into her tube.

The others did likewise, waiting for the deckhand to seal them in. Water began to flood the small chamber, cool waves washing over Natsumi. The world was just a small, flooded torpedo tube. For several moments, all she could hear was her breathing and the deep beat of her heart. It was time. Her chaotic thoughts ceased. Her worries shed away. There was no room for them.

The chamber opened to the world beyond, and she shot out into the darkness.

We already have 2 25mm guns that can actually hit things though.
>>
>>23903545

Because when faced with someone who is good at evading pinpoint fire, you just fire.

The inaccurate gundpods will fill the sky with lead and we will hit something.

except they are configured for strafing, which in addition to the inherent inaccuracy of the platform makes them worse than useless

....we have sights for our integral 25mm cannon, we don't need to lock on to her
>>
>>23903634
It covers an angle that she would generally expect to be safe, much like how we caught her off guard last time with our countermeasure launchers.

Of course we'd still be better off just jettisoning them for the weight.
