You are Ssen, a Lamia raised by a human Paladin who adopted you after killing the ones who birthed you. You are grown now, and Father has passed on. After a great deal of work, you have become a Paladin like your Father, and now take up his duties.

You are accompanied by your best friend from childhood, the insect druid Tricia; Mage, a magic user who ran away from his family of cannibal raiders known as the Ghouls (Yes, his name is Mage. It was his idea); Persephone, a 22-year old thief/ex-guerllia fighter (She goes by Peri), and Mari, a 13-year old prodigy scholar/now sniper, who has her mind and soul trapped within Peri's body; and Lea, a deeply religious musician/martial artist, trained by her father, a famous trainer for arena fighters, she's covered from her mouth down in bandages to hide the horrific state her body has become thanks to the 'cures' that saved her from cancer.

Your journey continues...

Your journey from Citadel to Stone Hall with your caravan of people has been surprisingly calm. Apart from a missing kid, and a broken wagon, you arrived in White Hall, and then at your hometown of River's Cross. (Still un-destroyed)

Your talks with Princess Mumei of the Phoenix Empire have been rather interesting though, from what you can understand of her speech, the Dragon Who Was Of Shadows, the being that tormented the early tribes of your land, was also present at the Phoenix Empire. Only at its defeat, instead of the pleasure trap of Citadel rising up, it seems those that worshipped the Dragon (Who they thought of as a God...or WAS a God and the Tribes thought of it as a Dragon, it's unclear.) now have their Empire under a rule of perfect order. The Princess is so desperate to never return to either the Empire or Citadel that she made you promise to be her executioner, as death by snake is an instant ticket to the Fires of Rebirth in the faith of her people.

River's Crossing is as quiet and pastoral as it was when you left. Everyone immensely proud of you and Tricia. You visited father's grave, and then Tricia's folks, where your relationship was brought up and confirmed. You also learned that Tricia's father tried to stop Citadel and the Humors with your Father. Only to fail miserably, a group of fifteen skilled warriors and mages fell before the four masked men.

The only clue Alexander was able to survive was a single white coin. Apparently the First Lantern existed, but was destroyed and the metal was changed into these coins. A man named Tallow, one of the survivors of your Father's failed expedition, found a small cache of the coins, and your Father fashioned a sword out of it. It was effective, but not enough to stop the Dramatae. Tallow also apparently talked with the Fifth Humor.

Now it is evening, and you have been asked by Father Uriah to speak at his evening mass. Your first real public address as a Paladin, so...no need to be nervous at all!
>>
>>23894482
Oooo, this started. That feel when just as nervous as Ssen about the speech
bumpin for the usual crowd.
>>
>>23894482
Father Uriah leads everyone through the opening prayer, giving blessing to the congregation and open requests for His Light to shine upon River's Crossing and its people.

Then he leads the crowd in a rousing chorus of 'Smash the Darkness, Purge the Shadows' which, despite having rather bloodthirsty lyrics, is always fun to sing. The old priest knows how to hold an audience.

Next comes up the current events in the area. The farms that are looking for help, when Wendy's caravan will be leaving, and how 'he doesn't have that awful painting of the Liberators of Stone Hall, so the boys should stop asking for a glance.'

This leads into a period of silent reflection. Then Uriah, with a few stupid jokes, passes the plate around. Once more threatening to lock everyone inside until he gets enough to fix the clock, as he always does.

"And now ladies and gentlemen, we have a distinct honor tonight. A Paladin has seen fit to visit our home town, and such a singular Paladin she is. The Savior of Purple Sands, the Champion of First Wood, a Liberator of Stone Hall, and Hero of Citadel. A member of the sacred order of the Caligo Clarus, and a woman who grew up right here, in our own very town. It gives me no end of pride, to yield my simple pine pulpit to Paladin Ssen Patrick.

There's a smattering of polite, reverent applause, as you slide up before the faces that you grew up around. A few of them hated you, most of them tolerated you, some of them came to like you...and now you're their hero.

So, yeah...no pressure.

You see the rest of the Dawnchasers give you a thumbs up.

I'll repeat this, but I don't want to just spring this on you last minute. I'm going to a convention on Thursday, so there isn't going to be the quest for the next few days. It might be on Sunday, depending on how I feel when I get back home. The quest will still be on tomorrow.

Bright Tower: Where Ssen was born. It's within the expanse of woods that is known as Ruin Forest. There's a collection of abandoned castles, stone circles, and other signs of what was probably a fairly bit settlement, now all overgrown by the woods. Probably one of the old Tribes lived here, now long gone, either moved away into another tribe or destroyed by the Dragon Who Was Of Shadow. Now a days, the place is filled with wild game, and a ton of beasts and monsters.

Thankfully because the game is so plentiful, and the woods and ruins offer security, the monsters stay inside the Ruin Forest, with a few exceptions now and again.

The centerpiece of the Ruin Forest, is the Bright Tower. The remains of an old castle, the majority of it is in ruins, but one of the towers still stands, and is visible from River's Crossing.

Apparently, whomever made the tower, used stones that had a large amount of what's called brillitite. When an electrical charge hits a stone with that ore in it, it lights up with a bright blue/white light. Thus every time there's a storm, you can sometimes see the tower light up the night as a glowing beacon.

Once, a while ago, a swarm of lizardmen, and three lamia queens, all of them very savage, took up residence in the tower and did a few raiding parties on the village. (So they claimed at least.) Liam Patrick, still emotionally broken over his loss against the humors and recently retired as a Paladin, took the job because it was easy, simple, no moral problems, and the coin was good.

Then when he finished killing the last Lamia Queen, the lightning stuck the tower, and the world filled with blinding light. When Liam's vision returned he saw a door open, and a young face look at him...and his world wouldn't ever be the same again.

How often do we, as a group, bathe? I know these medieval settings can get pretty stanky. At every town we visit?

Totally not stalling for time while I try to think of a good sermon. What are even some good themes for the sermon. Good coming from unexpected places? Change being scary, but also good?

When you can, when your own the road it's not much than a basin of water to splash, and a little soap in the crevices. Of course Ssen has advantages, a quick slither through a stream or wet grass and she's got most of herself clean. The others do their best. You're grubby, but not filthy, and you do fully bathe when you hit a town.

Still, during the caravan trip, everyone's more than a little ripe, especially with four straight weeks of travel left. (Less if Mage can get that haste spell working.)
>>
Oh man now that I check the times we've been stalling on this near an hour. I just got here, but I think I'm going to whip something up, regardless of quality. Echo, how do these sermons usually go? Extoll all the values of the light, or just talk about one of them, or what? I've never been a religious man, so I don't really have any idea.

Let's see...oh, have I talked about the Guilds? There's four: Swords, Coins, Staves, and Cups.
Swords handles mostly the non-military, non-occuli, non-Watch things that involves anything that requires someone being dead. They set sell-sword rates, place bounties, and are suspected to be a set of the purple occuli's eyes. They also control most of the forges in Citadel Kingdom, they set the prices, they place standards on wares, and they take their cut.

Staves runs the mage's guilds and the Conclave. The Mages usually keep to themselves and their studies, they register people who have the Gift, and ensure that any experimentation is done in places that don't leave craters where cities used to be. Mostly they get their money from enchanting things, and staying out of the way. The Conclave is filled with the alchemists, artificers (rebuilders of old magic-based gizmos, things that HAVE been, NOT Barney's innovative creations) and other people who are too damn clever for their own good.

Coins are the merchants, and it's an open secret that they're the thieves' guild as well. They set prices and move caravans, not to mention bleed nearly everyone with a little protection money. Also they make people who harm those that pay for said protection disappear within days.

Cups are the healers. There's none better, but they're a little...trigger happy, would be the best word. They have spellcasters, alchemists, and all sorts of people, and defeating the disease and leaving a person able to walk is job one but, like in Lea's case, the cure is sometimes worse than the disease.

It's been less than a year since I set out from River's Cross, but it feels like it's been far longer. I have seen and learned so much, and seen people endure many hardships and cruelty. But I have also witnessed great feats of bravery, of honour, of mercy and humble virtue.

Some might ask why The Light allows hardships and cruelty to take place, but I say that such hardships are not The Light, they are caused by mortal imperfections, all of us from the lowliest to the highborn of Citadel are imperfect, and The Light loves us for it.

It does not wish us to be puppets dancing on strings carrying out some sorry play of perfection, because in such a world, we would not truly be good, for we have never overcome the hardships that define us and teach us the true strength of kindness, mercy and love.

We must struggle every day to overcome our weaknesses, so that we may truly glorify The Light not just through words, but through our actions.

The Light asks us not to blindly obey, but to think each day on how we may embody the virtues that it loves and stands for, and make the lives of those around us better.

May The Light watch over all of you.

Will that do?

You take a deep breath and begin.

"It's been less than a year since I set out from River's Cross, but it feels like it's been far longer. I have seen and learned so much, and seen people endure many hardships and cruelty. But I have also witnessed great feats of bravery, of honour, of mercy and humble virtue.

"The Light asks us not to blindly obey, but to think each day on how we may embody the virtues that it loves and stands for, and make the lives of those around us better. May The Light watch over all of you." You say.

The congregation applauds, and Father Uriah shakes you hand, nodding and thanking you. He then leads the church in a lovely rendition of 'Light, Light, Make the Darkness Suffer In Fear' another favorite with lots of clapping. (Honestly, why must the nice hymns be so terribly dull?) He then ends with a full blessing on everyone, mentioning all the settlers, and the Dawnchasers by name. He sends everyone off with a "Blessed be, amen."

That piece of drama over, you go back to your house. You unlock the door and go inside. The memories are everywhere...and apparently so are a few wood splinters from Father's broken bed, along with a few shallow holes in the wall that probably match Tara's horns. Isen...

You sigh and head to your own bed/nest and start to get ready for what'll be the last nice sleep for a while.

There's a knock on the door.

"Hey, it's me." Tricia says.
>>
>>23895669
Let her in.
>>
>>23895669
"Come on in.

>>

"Tricia? I thought you'd be staying with your parents."
>>
>>23895736
"Come on in." She comes in. She points at the kettle, you nod, and she quickly makes two cups of tea for the both of you.

"Do you think my speech was good enough?"

She nods, she's staring into her tea, looking at something deep within it. "How...how old is that naga, the one we call Granny?" She asks. It's obvious that she isn't here to talk about *Granny's* lifespan.
>>
>>23895782
"Old, very old.

Technically she could live forever, as long as she doesn't birth a child in the...uh... traditional way."
>>
>>23895782
"Hum... Old enough to be wise. So, disclett for your thoughts."
>>
>>23895782

"I...no, I don't, uh, think so. I mean, I, uh..."

She nods. She finishes her tea. "I think I'm going to go sleep with my folks tonight." She kisses you on the cheek as she gets up. "See you tomorrow."

She heads towards the door.
>>
>>23895817
>Is that just a naga thing?

"Well... no. I might live a really long time, if I don't dive in front of assassins and the like too much."
>>
>>23895867
Hug that girl!

Don't let that girl leave without a good hug!

Try not to think about what the frequency of our hug giving throughout this quest has to do with our lamia heritage.
>>
>>23895867
"Goodnight. I love you."
>>
>>23895867
"Wait."

Go after her and hug her.

"I know things are going to be... odd, between us, but you had to know that going into a relationship with a Lamia. But whatever the future might hold, I want you to know that I love you, and I always will."
>>
>>23895898
You slide over and hug her. She lets you, but she doesn't hug you back.

"I...I think I'm going to need a little time...heh." She shakes her head. "I still...this changes things, but it doesn't change things. Okay?"
>>
>>23895863
To be fair, it really is the only way for us to have a child with her at all... apparently human/lamia doesn't take if its lamia side if I remember correctly.
>>

"Okay. Goodnight."
>>

>>
>>23895968
"Tricia... I love you, and I always will, take as much time as you need. Enjoy your time with your parents. Goodnight."

"Goodnight." She says as she leaves.

You sleep in your own bed, but this is the first night in a while that you didn't have Tricia wrapped around you, and you around her.

You realize that your scales can feel very cold when you're alone.

The next day everyone's back to normal. Tricia smiles at you and gives you a kiss on the cheek. Mage and Peri/Mari are bickering, and Lea's trying to get Tara to comb the mess that is her hair. Isen's tending to the princess, and the other settlers are dealing with their own belongings or families. The community sees you off on the road with a basket of sweet bread, good wishes, and lots of good byes and waves.

"Okay," Mage says when you're on the road. "You want me to try the haste spell?"
>>
>>23895939
"Tricia, I... Yeah. That's fine. Change is fine. Sorry for not telling you in an earlier awkward conversation, I can just only handle so much in a sitting I think. Enjoy your time with your parents."

I submitted a second, differently written comment. I hope that's legit and not some kind of terrible samefagging.

"No. No. Maybe the animals." Mage says. "But I'm pretty sure that they'll be fine. Uhh, basic version...super charges their muscles, hearts, lungs, and the motor skills in their brains. Also makes their skeletons stronger. They go faster and without tiring. For a while, then they stop and they're going to need to rest and eat a LOT of grass and food." Mage nods. "That or all those things I mentioned will rupture and explode. But I'm pretty sure I got it down. Also, it isn't Ghoul magic...kinda...I mean it's based off of some fleshshaper stuff, but I made it MUCH safer and no need to eat things other than what people normally eat."

"Am I good or am I good?!" Mage says as he twirls his staff.

No, we're still going to use metaphors. I really want to use lamb metaphors to her bird metaphors.
>>
>>23896733
Congrats, you are now fluent in Phoenix Tongue, Princess Mumei is gobsmacked that a King Snake can sing a song. She says that you must have been a crazy bird in an earlier life that soared in the winter storms because you could, and when you passed, you dared the Great Phoenix to give you a challenge...so It made you a Snake in this life.

"Uhh, Ssen." Peri/Mari says. "You may want to see this." She hands you a spy glass.

There's kind of a tent town, maybe a few ramshackle sheds as well, set up along the coast.

- -FIRST STONE HALL- - A sign proudly proclaims. - - HOLDING TO THE TRUE LIGHT - -

"If we go through there, we'll be in Stone Hall no troubles, but..." Peri points.

You can see that there's a clear sign on what looks like a trading post. - - NO LIZARDS, OR LIZARD LOVERS ALLOWED - - A sign proudly proclaims.

"We can go around them, but..." Mari shrugs.

>>
>>23896937
We should save them from their ignorance, because Citadel will use them regain its foothold in Stone Hall.

Going in right now would be foolish though, because we haven't had a chance to scout things out and learn what's going on, and the last thing we need is for some angry mob to attack the caravan full of non-combatants to get at us.
>>
"I may not agree with the things they say or do, but I support their ability to do it."

So, is /tg/ so paranoid in all its quests?

It's always super paranoid in the quests I join, but that could be because I just like the more paranoid quests.
>>
>>23897149
The dice gods are dicks, we have every right to be paranoid.
>>
>>23897149

I've found that most old school RPG players become increasingly paranoid. As a DM I can never use cursed items anymore because my players will never so much as touch an item without getting it run though every test in the game. No traps either because they refuse to move at more than a snails pace checking for traps. This hobby lives on paranoia, so it makes sense that a board dedicated to them would be rife with it.
>>
>>23897149
This one is mostly because of the role we play. It's also a product of the fact that, while Ssen has only a second or so to think before spealking/acting in character, we have 5+ shrewd minds convening for minutes behind the scenes, which creates the effect of all of Ssen's acting seeming extremely calculating and wise.

She is PLAINLY flying by the seat of her non-existant-pants. We got no idea how to be a paladin, but we're DOING IT ANYWAY!

>>23897123

You're less than two days away from Stone Hall, you can see it from here, and you're just starting to set up camp.

You hear the hoofbeats coming towards you and order everyone to get under the wagons for safety. Then they come out of the tree line. Six people on three horses. They have black canvas bags over their heads, the ones on horseback have torches and the ones riding with them have swords and one has an axe.

"Well...what do we have here?" One of the men says pointing his sword at you. "It's the queen freak herself."

"I heard this thing thinks it's supposed to be a Paladin." Another laughs. "I wonder if it takes confession." He grabs his crotch.

"You want to turn around now, Paladin Serpent." One of the horsemen says. "Take your freak-fuckers with you."
>>
>>23897241
Do that thing caravan guards do where they whistle and their guards all pop out from concealed positions with bows pointed and ready. Hopefully we're good enough to do that.

Solving a problem with knowledge is simply knowing how to do something.

We're trying to be a paladin, remember. Telling someone under our protection: "fuck off and hopefully you won't die on the way" the first time they insult us is pretty shitty behaviour.
>>
>>23898363
"Propaganda, Lea. The worst kind. Let's get the caravan safely to within Stone Hall's walls then quash this stupidity before it truly corrupts any more good minds.
>>
>>23898477
What're you talking about?

We were objecting to getting angry at the mother for being angry at us. She thinks her children were in danger because of us, she's not going to act rationally, and we don't want to say something we can't take back because of it.
>>
>>23898431
I've already voiced my opinion, and that is

Check that flier I guess. I don't look forward to reading it.

Because my idea was >>23898310
And I didn't realize how cold, unsympathetic and self-righteous it was.
>>
>>23898363
"I do apologize for the danger your children have been put in, and hope you can one day forgive me for it. It is my oath that none of them will be injured while they are under my watch, and I will guard them all the more fiercely on the way into town."

Is that good? I know it won't calm or assuage her, but I mean good from the sense of our obligations and requirements as both a paladin and a guard?
>>
>>23898363

Smells like a successful power grab. Between the proclamation of the lizardmen as citizens of Stonehall and the past leadership of Stonehall being gutted by the ghoul attack, there would have been a lot of uncertainty and fear for a warlord or other subversive elements to take advantage of.

What I'm wondering about is what happened to that one dwarven paladin that was in charge of rebuilding things. If worse comes to worse, he may have been assassinated or otherwise disposed of.
>>
>>23898464
They're all different. One is a typical propaganda piece, showing the threat of lizard corruption, a nasty caricature of Paladin Avery and his Occuli.

Another talks a LOT of shit about the Paladins. How they've fallen and how St. Odette was the only one to realize the corruption and was murdered by Julian Graves.

The third one is the one Lea saw. Apparently the church is corrupt and Her Illuminated Self is a puppet of a Darkness more fouler than any could imagine. (Well...a stopped clock...) And that there's the NEW Teachings of Light that show the way that people can regain what was lost.

The last is all about you, with a drawing that makes you into a giant, six armed, huge fanged monster that's devouring children. The Paladin Serpent who's coils are crushing out our lives and our life.
>>
>>23898569
>St. Odette
Oh you have got to be shitting me.
>>
>>23898568
Yeah. We need to look for him ASAP but he's likely in the city proper making sure things don't spread inside assuming he's still around.
>>
>>23898595
Dude, she martyred herself HARD with that leap of faith. Of course this happened.

We are dumb for not predicting it.
>>
>>23898608
Fucking Citadel. It's all Citadel's fault.
>>
>>23898608
I'm more impressed with how fast it spread, considering that we took off literally within a couple of days of her death, and they had time to learn about it and print pamphlets on the other side of the country before we arrived.
>>
>>23898569
Give a weighted glance at the others. "This stinks of shadows and sparks. Let's double time it."
>>
>>23898569
>St. Odette
Not on my fucking watch.
This probably stemmed from a lot of things, but I think the main cause was the Lizard folk getting equal rights Stone Hall.
>>
>>23898569
>Another talks a LOT of shit about the Paladins. How they've fallen
Yeah...
>and how St. Odette was the only one to realize the corruption
Pffft.

So anyway. They're getting a head-start in the ideological war. How we gonna fight this shit?
>>
>>23898631
Actually, I doubt it is.

Shadow and Sparks likes things to be the same.

Building a new religion and proclaiming everything corrupt and in need of change is the opposite of what I'd expect Citadel to do.

I think this is simple human bigotry.
>>
>>23898643
First we need to see how widespread this belief is. It could be a very small fringe group, or it could be a major movement in Stone Hall. Until we get there, we won't know.
>>
>>23898628
>>23898655

Yup! This is what happens when Citadel stops. Citadel kept those people happy and content, Citadel kept the undesirables away, Citadel even integrated the elves and dwarves and 'eased' the minds of people like this.

This is what happens when all that goes away. This is the Citadel-less world.
>>
>>23898655
"New" Religion focused on undoing the recent changes which citadel abhors, by portraying one of citadel's greatest tools as a martyr. There's a lot to be said for both sides of it.

>>

I kind of expected something like this, Stone Hall is still suffering from the aftermath of the ghoul attack, and at the same time we forced a major cultural shift (the Lizardfolk being allowed into the city) onto them.

Confused, angry, hungry and scared people do not welcome the unknown.

These people do want Citadel back, but they aren't aware of what it was. So, they're lashing out. Spoiled children not getting what they want, and temper tantrums.

So this IS thanks to Citadel, but not a direct influence of the Shadows and Sparks. This is just humans being humans.

Things are difficult now, so naturally it's someone else's fault.
>>
>>23898731
Time for a foot up the ass then.
>>
>>23898569
>The last is all about you, with a drawing that makes you into a giant, six armed, huge fanged monster that's devouring children.

We Maralith now.

Anyway, let's keep going to Stone Hall. I suspect we might want to go in separately from the rest. Until we know how strong an influence this group has in the city, it wouldn't be safe for any of the rest of the people here to be seen as our friends.

>>23898747
We have no feet.
>>

That's nice of them.

Agreed. This is our "safe haven" so lets make sure it's safe.

Your caravan rolls into Stone Hall. Finally. The other families split off. The Swings bolt at the first sign, but Dunraven is very polite, and the Quails thank you a lot and it looks like they've been honestly talking and fighting less, the Rawes shake your hand and give you a promissary note for the rest of your fee.

The four exiles, and Sophie, stay with you as you roll through town to the Mayor's Manor.

Stone Hill looks slightly bad. Graffiti with slurs are visible. Every fifth store has NO SCALES ALLOWED or SCALES ENTER IN BACK. One shop looks like it's been looted.

You can occasionally see Purist propaganda slapped up on alleys or littering the street.

It's not all bad though. For every one NO SCALES sign, there's two LIZARDS WELCOME. Plenty of propaganda that's a bit gushy but positive about the Paladins and how nice the lizard people are.

And in one of the parks, there's a human speaking on a soapbox decrying the hate and loathsomeness of the Purists.

But the air itself feels tense.
>>
>>23898841
(Welcome to the fantasy equivalent of 1960's Birmingham Alabama.)
>>
>>23898792
The problem is that getting things like this under control generally requires decades of gradual cultural change.

We can't just roll into town and beat up the Purists, it'll just make more Purists.
>>
>>23898731
I propose these things

FIRST ORDER OF BUSINESS: we got STABBED. can we fix the STAB WOUNDS? maybe get some bedrest?
"Tricia, those guys got a few good ones in on me. Can you look at them? I'm not feeling so hot."

SECOND ORDER OF BUSINESS: Maybe apologize or at least say something to the butcherwife?

THIRD ORDER OF BUSINESS: Meet the dwarf paladin to discuss plans on this movement

Does this sound like acceptable to everyone?
>>
>>23898841
I want to go listen to that hatespeech, but we need to talk to the mayor.

Also how are our stabwounds?

>>23898891
Avery has changed from the quiet methodical dwarf you saw when you left.

Hell, the whole manor has changed. The amber occuli look like they've been working around the clock, some are passed out in their chairs. Papers are everywhere.

Trade issues, grain shortages, fishing rights in dispute, purists burning farms that have Lizard People workers, more and more people demanding money to recover from the Ghoul attack, and on and on and on...problems aren't getting solved on their own any more.

Avery is bleary eyed, his desk is covered with papers, and you can smell a little alcohol on his breath. Despite the stereotype, dwarves handle alcohol just the same as any other. He looks utterly miserable.

"Paladin Ssen." He says. "Welcome to my eternal Darkness."
>>

"Paladin Avery, good to see you again.

"It seems you could use quite a bit of help here. Hopefully, my friends here can help you in some way or another."

Intros for the four exiles if here.

"And of course any help I can offer is on the table too. Though I'm not good with paper work."

"Eternal Darkness, eh? Well, as a Caligo Clarus, it's good to feel needed. In all seriousness, though, how've you been holding up? And what's the situation here in the city?"

"A nightmare, we're just barely holding it together, and these Purists aren't helping." He sighed. "I thought it would be over when I found out where they were hiding in the city. I marched in my people and we ended them, every last one." He banged his hand on the table. "I found their prophets, I found their bases, and i had them killed, or hanged. Now, thy have thier own little base of foulness. 'First Stone Hall' disgusting. I just can't spare the men to wipe it off the face of the world." He sighs. "I don't suppose you brought an Occuli division with you? I already sent for one from Bronze Peak."

"Then what? Am I supposed to just sit here and push paper as people die? These are not people who view people like you or me AS people!" He sighs. "They only respond to force." He sighed. "I can't help but think I've failed."

"You've done a fine job, Paladin Avery, better than others could have done. But I think you're going about this the wrong way. I've met people like the Purists, and simply killing them won't solve the problem. You'll just make them martyrs for the next generation.

You laugh and wave it off.

"First things first, we need to know who's in charge, who these Purists respect and follow."

Avery nods. "That changes far too often than I'd like...but give me some time and I should have the information for you." He sighs. "But I have some good news for you, and your 'Order' at least." He chuckles. "Your donation was very helpful, and I am paying you back for it.

"The old lighthouse hasn't been used since the newer one was built. Someone used it to store jars and bottles. They died during the attack, and the stores have been long used, but I haven't found a good use for the space. Caligo Clarus headquarters, naturally.
>>

Good thing we're nipping that one right in the bud.

True enough, but what does that entail? I generally don't make it to the bling-your-fort stage of adventuring before something terrible happens.
>>
>>23899371
"I would like it very much, in fact the historian that traveled here with us was telling me we should get a tower to house the Order."

>>23899694
2 hours or so I would bet. As for the lighthouse, tell the historian about it, I would bet he would be delighted that we have a tower.
>>
>>23899750
Well, first things first, make sure the tower is structurally sound, plug up any leaks or breaches, clean out all the debris and refuse, stuff like that.

Then once we get a better idea of the internal layout we can get to converting the place into a proper Order headquarters.
>>
>>23899823
>Well, first things first, make sure the tower is structurally sound, plug up any leaks or breaches, clean out all the debris and refuse, stuff like that.
I suggest also checking the land it sits upon and how fast its being eroded by the ocean. This can be a serious structural concern as a powerful storm could wash out the foundation.

Also suggesting that everyone take turns doing patrols of the city. We should build up a map and mark which areas are strong supporters of having lizard people on the surface and who are hardliners. Everything else is grey.
Once we know where the hardliners are situated try to figure out who comes in and out of the city heading towards the other Stone Hall. They may be using parts of the tunnels as well. Ask Granny and Mary about building up a map of the undercity as well to determine if sections have been closed off in the past few months.
>>
>>23899823
Also, are we going to get our own occuli? We already sort of have some, what with mage'n'peri/meri'n'isen and all the rest.

Maybe recruit some lizardmen and nagas into it too.

I'd rather things not get unwieldy, although we could recruit some locals to maintain the tower while we're off doing heroic things.

I'm just saying that a shield would be really darn handy.

And maybe a spear too. Would lamias use spears well? Would a snake strike in combination with a spear basically be a cavalry charge?

She uses a three-limbed style.

>Longspear
>Rise up on full length of tail, rear body back, whip entire body and length of tail forward with the thrust.

>>
>>23900269
When I see Ssen put a sword in her tail I'll gladly concede that she's more badass than Lea.
>>
>>23900303
I think one of ssen's upgrade paths is "dragoon".

>>23900307
Once we get full tail armor, we can spike it for grapple powers.
>>
>>23900336
I don't think a spike on our tail-tip would be as effective as a simple steel weight.

Because rotational kinetic energy is the ultimate shit-ruiner.
>>
>>23900399
so, a higher level Ssen is going to have:

Armor that trails for her entire tail

A mace on the tip of her tail

A spear for lightning strikes

A shield

Also, she still has her bow. I don't think she ever loses that. And probably still her sword for a secondary weapon.
>>
>>23899371
>>23900028
I'd also really like to know a rough layout of the city. Stone Hall has a surrounding wall and a limited number of entrances, right? Where is the lighthouse in relation to the city entrance we used (the one on the main road), and where is the sewer entrance we used to sneak into the city (which we should remember as a means of sneaking out if we need it)?

We also need to give our lovely new lighthouse base a name. Obviously it serves as a light in the darkness, but "Light in the Darkness" doesn't work very well as a name, and it's a literal translation of Caligo Clarus.

Ideally, we want something pithy, memorable, and evocative of some combination of the Caligo Clarus symbolism or our own motley party of Beautiful Nightmares.

We help support Stone Hall, so perhaps "Keystone"? (And I wrote that name *before* realizing all the jokes it enables since we're helping with local law enforcement.)

Given that we're a branch of the Occuli, "Watchtower" could work.
>>
>>23900567
Another idea: "Lens", "Prism", or something else based on the idea of focusing the Light.
>>
>>23900567
Both of those are kind of puns and I love it. I really think we should use this place as a secondary guard tower, in addition to headquarters.
>>
>>23900641
oh, also, I think the first function our tower should acquire other than "headquarters" is "guard tower". This place needs safety and all, and it would give us a teensy bit of actual political muscle.
>>
Shame we can't got full Vetinari on this place.
We can however... go full Vimes. Set it up so the law is more "This is how people are, how do we deal with it." rather than a Citadel-like "This is how people are, how do we change them."
>>
We are still around? I didn't miss it?

So far, our plan includes mapping out the moderates, the purists, and the friendlies.

Can we set up a network of persuasive friendlies to subtly persuade their neighbor/friends?

Can we set up public debates to gently point out where they went wrong? This way, we can persuade the moderates.

Are there any historical precedents that went well to learn from? Do we really need to march to Washington?
>>
>>23900782
yes. I fully support laying down a big steaming pile of LAW.

If possible, we should somehow arrest the entirety of first stone hall.
>>
>>23900795
We're waiting for Echo's return from some errands. Feel free to join the general chatter about plans for our new acquisition or whatever.
>>
>>23900799
But, then, how are we different from the Phoenix Empire?

Thus comes the debate that rages on since time unknown - Govern by law with order, govern by the heart of the people, or dream of govern by moral?
>>
>>23900795
Hey, you got me. I'm not the best at converting folks, usually I just slay some ghoul horde and everyone loves me.

But I guess odette got the credit on that somehow?
>>
>>23900816
Thank you. I certainly will.
>>
>>23900799
They're fanatics who see us as evil incarnate. If we march in there they will make themselves martyrs before they let us capture them.

The plan to discredit their leaders is a better one.
>>
>>23900819
Honestly, this wouldn't even be changing the laws, just simple enforcement of pre-existing laws.

Those folks have done at LEAST loitering, if not banditry and who knows what.
>>
>>23900795
The Stone Hall debate! Where one of the candidates make a fool of him/herself.

I really hope it is not us, and that we do not talk about our enemies who are always thinking of harming our people, and so are we.
>>
>>23900834
Oh yeah, I forgot about that plan.

Also, would walking around NOT being a 6 armed baby eater help?
>>
>>23900501
We should also be getting some gauntlets, vambraces and cowters in addition to that shield. Additionally we ought to very much consider some reinforced faulds and a lamellar plackart. The last of these is exceedingly important, considering how often we seem to be struck there.
>>
>>23900829
I trust in the combined wisdom of /tg/. As long as you don't offer them fluffy tails.
>>
>>23900854
Probably, yes. I think we still have a pretty heavy lead on public opinion, considering that many of the people here remember us no less than a year ago charging in, defeating the ghoul king and saving them from being eaten alive.
>>
>>23900882
*no MORE than a year ago
>>
>>23900845
True. However, those kind of graffiti, loitering, and all can also be addressed using social psychology, such as replacing the windows, erasing the graffiti promptly, and making the area too nice-looking to be a ghetto. Then the vandals would feel less interested in defiling it.
>>
>>23900799
We can't arrest people for being stupid, we'd never get a jail big enough.
>>23900819
The problem is the same problem with revolutions. Its not that we have the wrong type of government, we just have the wrong type of people. Most are distrustful of change, what we really need to do is show that the change will be a good one. Stimulate industry. People who know they have a livelyhood are happy more willing to overlook petty bigotry.
>>
>>23900829
I seriously doubt anyone but hardline Purists thinks we didn't save the day from the ghouls.
>>
>>23900869
can you explain what all of those things are.

>>23900873
But our tail isn't fluffy at all!

>>23900882
Yeah, I figured we had this one in the bag, but I guess not upon arrival.
>>
What happened to that one attacker who didn't die?
Could we use him somehow? Put a magic tracer on him to track movements and see just who he talks to?
>>
>>23900921
We haven't dealt with him yet. We WERE going to turn him over, but echobreak.
>>
>>23900854
We should, though, walk around in sight of people of Stone Hall to show who we are.

We need a public opinion specialist.
>>
>>23900903
This is it, we had the unfortunate situation of an entirely new social group/race being forced into society right when the city was recovering from an invasion and most people were probably struggling to get by.

We need to knock out some of the most hardline extremists, because they'll never change and they'll sabotage our efforts, but beyond that, we need to change opinions by making life here better.
>>
>>23900921
Too big brother for me. We'd be as bad as citadel.
>>
>>23900782
>"This is how people are, how do we deal with it."
Fortunately for us, "how people are" isn't really that bad here:

>>23898841
>It's not all bad though. For every one NO SCALES sign, there's two LIZARDS WELCOME. Plenty of propaganda that's a bit gushy but positive about the Paladins and how nice the lizard people are.

It sounds like we have quite a bit of vocal support, a fair pile of indifference, and some very vocal opposition.

>>23900834
Yeah, to the extent we win this with force at all, it'll be very targeted force, and we have to take care that it doesn't backfire. Our fighting entrance will already have made an unpleasant impression.

>>23900850
This is actually a great idea, if we can make it work. Paint ourselves as the reasonable ones willing to talk; shame them into showing up, and then let the public see what they're really about. Get the indifferent on our side, and reduce the opposition to just the extremists.

Other non-violent means include:
>>23900900
this kind of campaign, where we just drown out their message so nobody hears it.

And while we shouldn't turn Stone Hall into a police state, we want to make sure public policy sharply cracks down on discrimination and hate.

>>23900931
Does such a person exist in this world? If so, absolutely. I'm afraid that Isen might be the closest we can get. (Bards are a pretty good PR firm, though.)
>>
>>23900943
Let's at least learn about their qualms against us.

I have no doubt that we cannot win everyone over, and this problem will not go away no matter how much we try. It is a problem that will remain for generations. However, we can change how much of a force it is in the public's eyes.
>>
>>23900914
Gauntlets: Gloves
Vambraces: Forearm guards
Cowters: Articulated elbow guards
Faulds: Bands protecting the front waist and hips
Plackart: Armor protecting the belly
Lamellar: Meaning consisting of multiple lames, or bands of armor made to be overlapped to form an articulated section of armor, such as in the case of the Roman lorica segmentata.
>>
>>23900934
I agree we should focus primarily on improving the economy of this place. Though, I think more guards would do wonders for it, as there are attacks and fighting harming farm effeciency. Anything we build will be unoptimal until we get these attacks, at least, sorted.
>>
>>23900971
The problem is that outside forces bring in Citadel influence.

Perhaps we should suggest organizing and training a local militia/city watch to Avery.
>>
>>23900966
What did we have right now? I believe some sort of leather getup?

Think we're good for the switchup to a more metallic lamellar outfit? Have we done that already without me noticing?

I'm all for better armor though.
>>
>>23900958
I am up for getting some bards on our side. Lea and Isen should be the experts at that.

Also, as hateful as this is, if we can start teaching children about bigotry early, then this could be less of a problem.
>>
On a more quest-centric note, we should start trying to figure out if Lantern Coins have any power in small quantities, starting with one. Do they affect how people feel, or promote clear thinking or free will?

How dangerous would it be to reveal our interest in the Lantern Coins? Would it be a really terrible idea to put the word out that we're interested in them and people should trade them to us?
>>
>>23900998
I think education can come under later initiatives.

First we need to stop Purity from burning farms and murdering people in the street. Then we can work on setting up jobs, better living conditions and proper education.
>>
>>23900971
Economy, I think, will be a key part in the moderates choosing us over the extremists. If we bring in trade, if we bring in machines, and industry that outdoes anything Citadel can do, then people will love us.

I believe many of the haters are doing it because jobs are scarce, and they fear losing their job to lizards (e.g., protectionism). If we make jobs aplenty, then that fear will be assuaged.
>>
>>23901028
What happens if we make holy symbols out of them, and outfit an order of specially trained warriors with them while fighting the dramatae?
>>
>>23901037
True. But give them community services or other sentences rather than jail time, and be lenient in the courts. At least, make the punishment fit the crime.
>>
What I love about this quest is that the problems we face are also pertinent to the world we live in. Abortion without paternal consent, prisoner torture, public influence, racial hatred, rule of law...
>>
>>23901028
It was theorized in the last thread that singular coins would offer the person protection from Citadel's influence. We didn't get that confirmed but it was implied that they did /something/.
>>
>>23900998
That's actually a pretty good idea in several ways. I'd almost rather make it something completely alien to them, though. How integrated are the two populations? Are there places where lizard kids and other kids can play together?

>>23901072
Yeah, and have the community service involve things like supervised cleanup of hate propaganda and vandalism.

Top priority, in my opinion: we need to get Mage working on the communication/translation spell with an emphasis on lizardfolk. Most of the lizardfolk don't speak the common language, and that makes integration extremely difficult. It's a lot easier to hate a people you can barely interact with, and a lot easier to treat someone as normal when you can hold a conversation with them.
>>
>>23901106
Guys.

Guys.

Free early childhood education.
Children's creche.
Kindergarten.
>>
>>23901106
FUCK, I forgot humans couldn't understand lizardmen!

That translation spell is goot idea!
>>
>>23901106
Specifically, it's a lot easier to hate or even mildly discriminate against lizardfolk in the abstract, and a lot harder when it's "Sssmith, my friendly neighbor", or "Sssusssan and Sssally, my friends from playtime".
>>
>>23901122
>kindergarden lighthouse
Only if we have some people to man it for us. No way we can do that AND paladin.
>>
>>23901106
>Language barrier

Very true. Translation spells will be amazing. If not, how did European nations do so well in teaching her citizens multiple languages? Canada absolutes sucks at it.
>>
>>23900995
Right now we're wearing Dad's old leather armor. I think we should have Gregory touch it up (tailor, repair, condition, etc.) and then alter it to add in the aforementioned armor sections. New and/or mostly metal armor is questionable, though. The primary leather composition is important for flexibility, since we are a lamia after all, not to mention the sentimental value.
>>
>>23901145
Are the lizardman living above ground with the humans?

Because this could work.
>>
>>23901146
There are unemployed people around after the attack.

Why not make them teachers? Have more experienced teacher teach the less experienced one on how to care for children. This way, the wives also can find a way to make money and support the family. Down side of that is the feminist revolution that can get out of hand in an already confusing time. But it is also a good thing.
>>
>>23901190
>Teachers
Practical ones though. Not just the basics, but craftsmanship based stuff, letting kids get a feel for what they are good at.
>>
>>23901234
Start with general education, then move on to apprenticeships.
>>
>>23901190
Women's rights hasn't been an issue in quest. I kind of doubt it will be as well. We have female Paladins and whatnot already. Citadel's influence probably smoothed over the gender gap along with the racial gaps with dwarves/elves/humans
>>
>>23901258
I think career development is important here. Especially if we are going to move to a machine/technology based society.

How did the real world change when things become automatized?
>>
>>23901146
Depending on how big the lighthouse is, this is an awesome idea. Remember the huge difference between how much adventurers make by questing and how much the average person makes; 100 hold was a hardship for a family, while we had 7500 gold at one point from a couple of adventures. That helped us fund the rebuilding of Stone Hall, and it could help us fund some facilities like this. But I think we want to start a lot less formal than this; we need some simple ways to increase regular interaction between lizardfolk and non-lizardfolk.

>>23901165
Crud, I hadn't even thought of that. Probably most of them live underground, and the ones that live aboveground are probably risking the lizard equivalent of flaming crosses on their lawn, or worse.

Question for Echo: what's the total population of Stone Hall, anyway? Ideally broken down into humans, non-human humanoids, and lizardfolk.

>>23901234
>Practical ones though. Not just the basics, but craftsmanship based stuff, letting kids get a feel for what they are good at.

Including lizardfolk, too, don't forget. How much knowledge do they have to share that's otherwise lost?

We're definitely going to get accused of propagandizing and brainwashing, here, but that's pretty much unavoidable.

>>23901151
I like the idea of having him rework some part of the old armor into the new, so that we don't feel like we have to choose between our sentimental attachment to our father's armor and Gregory's impressive-looking rework with the Caligo Clarus motif.

Since we can now communicate fluently with Princess Mumei, we should really have some more straightforward conversations with her about the history of the Phoenix Empire.
>>
>>23901304

>>
>>23901279
How about having the humans live below ground as well?

Incentives for immigrants living in either area?

Also, we need a chat with Grandma.
>>
>>23901312
oh yes, I had looked forward to that today. I hope to do that soon.
>>23901279
Yeah, lets get our leather armor some metal bits worked in so we aren't stabbed so much. Along with a shield.

Also, how LONG can we keep up an adventurer's income? We are only making these huge bounties because we're killing the threats of the kingdom. Once those are gone, so does our cash, so does our school.
>>
>>23901333
How about a rolling fee based on income for early childhood education by qualified educators? That free up the parents to earn more?

Also, we need to encourage steam engine development. I think it may change everything - more jobs, more time working and less time thinking about bigotry, less job scare, and with modernization comes a shift in societal view.
>>
>>23901329
Good idea. Also, is this discrimination one-sided, or do lizardfolk discriminate against others too? We haven't seen the underground yet; I'm betting on at least one group of lizardfolk who'll want to forcibly eject all non-lizardfolk from Stone Hall.
>>
Why is it /tg/ discuss social policies more intelligently than the average discussion in universities, the place where enlightening discourses are supposed to occur?
>>
>>23901399
Because we are actually interested.
>>
>>23901371
Avery did say that the lizardfolk weren't reacting with violence, which he was thankful for.

Either it goes against their nature, or Granny is keeping them under control.

Speaking of which, we really ought to talk to Granny about this situation as soon as possible.
>>
Anyone wants to summarize our long term goal?

Public debate.
Shame leader.
Clean up graffiti, possibly with community service sentences.
Communication spells.
Have lizardman move up to the surface, and human down underground.

? Kindergarten.
?Industrial revolution/economy/trade
>>
>>23901370
That would require some sort of census to work, which I don't know if we have.

If there is a census and taxman records, though, it might work!
>>
>>23901370
This is the kind of stuff we might want to consider for long-term fixes, though I don't think we want to get *too* bogged down in detailed planning of an educational system. We'll have to let the local administrators, and folks like Avery, do their jobs; micromanagement doesn't survive the departure of the micromanager, and we're planning on adventuring much more than administrating. General policies like "make sure everyone can get an education" seem like enough detail.

>>23901399
Different set of problems, historical precedent to learn from which applies less to current public policy, and most importantly the power to actually implement our chosen solutions.
>>
>>23901399

It's the hive mind. Anonymity encourages free speech, ergo more brainstorming, ergo more ideas. Simple. Plus, we willingly are on this topic; it's ours.
>>
>>23901432
when you actually say it OUT LOUD, that "lizardmen move above ground humans move below ground" thing sounds TERRIBLE TERRIBLE TERRIBLE.

Maybe we should not do that.
>>
>>23901449
well, once we figure out how the pay is coming in and assign people to work and a manager to manage, then we can be done. We have to establish the structure.
>>
>>23901459
PR spin it to be fresh new opportunities in a world humans/lizards have not touched!

New business opportunities!
Ways to improve your living standards!

Be one the first, settle the west... I mean... the above/underground!
>>
>>23901432
I don't think we should move people underground or anything like that. Displacing people forcibly will just make them resent us.
>>
>>23901459
We're just talking about improving integration here. Having a lizard district underground and almost entirely humans aboveground does not help both sides see and interact with each other constantly. Little divisions encourage bigger divisions, and "all of one group lives underground" is a pretty big division to begin with.
>>
>>23901418
>>23901449
>>23901453

True.
>>
>>23901497
How about acquiring lands where the owner no longer lives (e.g. dead by the ghouls), and give them out at reduced price in a human/lizard/human/lizard configuration?
>>
>>23901497
I know, but it sounds AWFUL suspicious from an above-grounder standpoint.
>>
>>23901526
True. We have to ponder on it more.
>>
>>23901523
Yeah, we're in a position to set what amounts to homesteading policy here. At the moment, effectively Stone Hall administration (i.e. Avery) is responsible for rebuilding efforts, and what to do with what is rebuilt.
>>
>>23901523
New France and the Seigneurial system, go away.

Can the church offer counselling service to the PTSD'ed population?
>>
>>23901547
Fascinating to read about, but I'm not seeing the connection.

>>23901578
Yeah, I think the main factor in our favor here is actually having power over the policies in this world. It makes politics so much more *interesting* when the only thing between your idea and implementation is convincing a small number of highly imaginative people through conversation in a common forum.
>>
>>23901593
I think it might be an issue. I don't know if counselling will help.
>>
>>23901578
>None of us are as cruel as all of us etc.
Why yes, /tg/ is the best board my friend.
>>
>>23901610
Oh no, it is just a land distribution system to encourage European to move to the new world and settle somewhere they would never have gone before. The government decides who gets to go where.
>>
SO:

Are the zombie apocalypse survivors or the ex-ghouls the ones that are more anti lizard?
>>
>>23901643
Ah, I see. I was trying to see a connection with the bit about specifically trying to integrate two cultures or peoples, but yeah, it's clearly a government-managed land policy. Hard to avoid at least starting with that when the government is the one rebuilding the city, though. We can't enforce that it *stays* that way, we're just choosing who to initially sell or rent it to.
>>
>>23901660
...that's a disturbing thought. Not least of which because did we really need *more* divisions among people?
>>
>>23901660
...You just raised an interesting point with that statement. I really do wonder if the ex-ghouls are persecuting the lizardpeople to draw attention away from themselves.
>>
>>23901676
Good point. Should we ask if this is an issue?
>>
>>23901676
Or more generally, if there are motivations here besides hate. Some people might have legitimate concerns, like whether the city can really support both populations, or whether one will displace the other, or whether there'll be enough work, or resources; we need to find those out and address them, so that all that's left is the irrational hate.
>>
>>23901717
So the answer is industrial revolution?

I guess I should not have chased the potato out.
>>
>>23901741
It's okay Anon. Citadel is the potato
>>
>>23901741
The answer is more efficient distribution of resources. Industrial revolution could accommodate that. Any number of things could.
>>
>>23901768
So we get to do the reverse? Where we ask the potato to join us?
>>
>>23901793
So we need... an audit?
>>
>>23901831
A census and tax audit would be a very sensible step, I agree. Maybe not the FIRST step, but a sensible one.
>>
>>23901284
I like the idea of researching more efficient planting methods, with possible involvement of machines. Or breeding new crops with MAGIC that are resistant to disease or the weather.

Or ask princess for Phoenix empire crops (rice! cabbage!) to help.
>>
>>23901899
You know, we should really get the princess in on this. Tell her the situation, how we're rebuilding. She could provide some crop techniques, or at least some rulership insight. Isen too.

Food is a key to the economy.
>>
>>23901956
Isen seems like the most likely candidate to help keep this place running while we're gone. He'll probably take up residence in the lighthouse and style himself the Rebel Prince.
>>
>>23901983

>Isen
>Stay in one place
>Do administrative work

so I'm trying to catch up from the beginning, but it's taking time.

>>23902106
You'll want to read the whole thing for the details, but a short summary: Ssen and Tricia love each other and they both know it, and that hasn't been abandoned or betrayed. Recent developments: Ssen told Tricia about the conversation with Granny that means they can have kids together someday and Tricia wanted to give that some thought; Tricia's parents found out that Ssen and Tricia are together, and they were supportive once they knew it was serious and not a fling; and most recently Tricia had a serious conversation with Ssen about how Ssen could potentially live forever and wanted some time to think about that (leading to the first time the two have slept apart in a long while).

>>23902268
I couldn't do that to Tara.
>>
>>23902361

>>
>>23902394
I'm suspicious of everything like that now, in case Citadel is involved.

Although in their case, I can see it just coming down to the two of them being horny as fuck.
>>
>>23902443
Still, woulda been worth it for the Ssen/Isen dynamic.

I would wildly reel from hilarious to adorable.
>>
>>23902443
Nah, it's just Isen being a typically lech of a bard, and Tara apparently being fine with it (or perhaps just liking him enough to not do anything about it; remember what she did to herself to look pretty because she thought that was what he wanted). (Also, groan re: horny minotaurs.)

But the other question is whether *Ssen* would be fine with it. I'd argue "no". And Isen certainly protests the idea of settling down with anyone.

>>23902471
They have a pretty hilarious dynamic already.

Tara also already knows that Isen is in an arranged marriage with the Princess and, being aware of how important that is for royalty, is fine with being his mistress. I don't see Ssen being okay with that.
>>
>>23902712
Right. And now that the Princess is outside of Citadel's influence, she isn't necessarily OK with that arranged marriage either, or with sharing. I doubt she'd obediently spin around and cluck now.
>>
Okay, back from errands and day-after-passover dinner with folks. Love my ma's brisket.

Wow, you guys just sorta dived into this one...

The Lighthouse...is not quite a total dump, but it doesn't seem too inviting. It was a glass storehouse before it was yours. Still it's big enough to house the lot of you, and some more.

Ambrose has just moved himself right on in. Apparently he's convinced himself that he's the Caligo Clarus' new lorekeeper, and that restoring the lighthouse is his duty...which is why Gregory and Barney jump in to keep the old man from breaking his back.

Widdy has some friends in town, and a few 'fell off of the trucks' here and a little dumpster diving there, and some 'What do you mean you aren't fucking grateful to the people who saved this city and your life?!' to polish it off, the Caligo Clarus has a new home.

Also it seems that Barney, Gregory, and Ambrose aren't leaving any time soon...mainly because they don't really have homes yet, as opposed to the settlers who can make do with what they have/have relatives, Widdy who has friends who are letting him crash, and Sophie who's now safely with the Mages learning how to Not Use Magic properly.

"So what are we going to call this place?" Tricia asks as she hangs the lantern from the top of the building.

"Keystone?" Mage suggests.

"Watchtower's a classic." Lea says.

"The Prism?" Tricia offers.

"There's some old Second Age tiles on the arch in the front." Mari suggest. "A lot of them are old, but one of the remaining ones says 'Beacon.' But it's your call Ssen."

that's a good point! She DOES prefer death to citadel, after all.
>>
>>23902759
Echo! Not moments after I worry you won't return tonight!

What happened with that one prisoner? We turned him in, yeah?

Also I am split between the watchtower and beacon.
>>
>>23902759
>"There's some old Second Age tiles on the arch in the front." Mari suggest. "A lot of them are old, but one of the remaining ones says 'Beacon.' But it's your call Ssen."

Torn between going with Beacon, and the fact that the phrase "beacon of hope" made me think of "Hope" as a name. But leaning towards going with Beacon.

> The Lighthouse...is not quite a total dump, but it doesn't seem too inviting. It was a glass storehouse before it was yours. Still it's big enough to house the lot of you, and some more.

Compared to the size of the average house, how much space are we talking about? The average modern lighthouse isn't much more than a staircase and a couple of rooms; I assume it's bigger than *that*.

Could we get a rough description of where the lighthouse is in the city?
>>
>>23902797
Yeah, you turned over the Purist to Avery. Right now he's just in jail, but there's muttering of 'confession' and 'example making.'
>>
>>23902819
The newer lighthouse is little more than a staircase and rooms.

As for the old one, it's pretty damn big, think of...I guess Saints Row 2 or even the bioshock lighthouses. It's about as big as a warehouse, only slightly more vertical.
>>
>>23902824
OK, we need to stop that right now. How old is this kid, and what has he really done, besides attack us? Let's not use him to continue the cycle of hate here.
>>
>>23902824
>>23902863
Well, that is bad and then good news.

We'll have to deal with torture and executions when they rear their head. I already voted for a name, so I'm gonna just watch how this plays out until we get a prompt for another action. I am hoping getting a smith working on a shield for us is this action.
>>

If we really wanted to go fancy on the name, we could name it "Illumination Point" or "Lumin Point" or something along those lines.
>>
>>23902886
If he's older than 21 you'd be shocked. And remember he's attacked and drew blood on a *Paladin.* They can't allow THAT to go scot free. The kid's life is over.
>>
>>23902913
If we were going that route, I'd suggest New Bright Tower or similar.
>>
>>23902824

Here's to hoping that Paladin Avery resist the urge to go full Bordain on that prisoner. Not great conduct for a Paladin, and it'd be akin to attempting to extinguish a fire by drowning it in gasoline.
>>
>>23902919

"Which do you prefer: satiating your own ego as a boy, or manning up and helping to rebuild your city?"

I just thought this line might come in handy at some point.
>>
>>23902919
Maybe, but this is not Citadel; even if we think the guy has to die (and I'd still prefer an alternative, which we almost certainly have the sway to push for since we are the paladin in question), we don't do public spectacles here.
>>
>>23902913
So, you're waiting for Avery to give you a run down of what you're working against. In the meantime, other than Gregory working on your new armor, you have some options.

---Go visit Granny

---Find Isen, Tara, and Mumei

---Deal with the Purist kid yourself.
>>
>>23902987
I don't think we want to deal with him personally, beyond making it clear that we don't favor "cruel and unusual", and Avery shouldn't either.

Let's go visit Granny and the lizardfolk. We need to hear from the other side of this city, and we have a lot of questions for her. Bring Tricia.
>>
>>23902987

Go visit Granny. Get some advice on how to deal with the Purists.

Then go deal with the kid.
>>
>>23902967
I'm sorry but the kid has to hang for this. It cannot be left unpunished. Deal with him like any Highman. Not because he was some racist/religious nut. Just hung until death then cut down and buried/burned.
>>
>>23902987
Those are all options I really want to do. The purist kid is the only time sensitive one, but it's also the only one I don't really know what I'd be going for in. Your call dudes.

If so, I'd still say a public spectacle is both cruel and counterproductive. But in any case, since when do we punish assault with death? Does Stone Hall truly not have the facilities to deal with prisoners, ideally in a vaguely productive way?

>>
>>23903072
How will we counter the slave labor argument?
>>
>>23903008

I think we can do better than that. Paladins are all about helping people who have been cast aside by society and such, and our companions show what can happen if that is applied properly. While the Purists' official goal is unconscionable, the reasons each of their members have for doing what they do may be vastly different. Maybe they're scared or being coerced into doing these things, or they may be compelled or brainwashed.

By helping this poor fellow, Ssen & company may gain some insight into what drives the Purists. If they all say the same thing without fail, then they're either very dedicated and of the same mind or being magically compelled. If they have legitimate grievances, then it may pay to hear what he has to say and see if anything can't be done about that.
>>
>>23903074
How rabid is this guy? If he's the "I'd rather die" type, I don't have much of a problem obliging him. If he's an idiot kid who got into something he shouldn't have...

>>23903082
That one isn't hard. "Would you rather we kept them in prison or executed them?"
>>
>>23903050
This is a person that not only attacked a convoy but also attacked a Paladin. Paladins that up hold order and law.

Hell in the west people were hung for less. You know stealing horses, killing cattle, etc.

And think of precedent you be setting to all highway men. 'Oh look you can attack attempt to kill people and only get some harsh labor.' Yeah no.
>>
>>23903088
That's all well and find if they have legitimate grievances but attacking people in daylight? That's not how you get change. There is laws to be upheld and this type of crime is met at the end of a rope.

Avery says he's willing to wait a little bit for the kid. He is willing to do this quick and quiet. If you don't want to deal with it, then he's going to me marched to the yard outside, head on a stump and a date with an axe.

Granny sighs as you enter her home. "So, how are you liking a world without Citadel? And imagine this, Citadel itself is exponentially bigger than here."

She pulls out an old shield and a simple spear. "Here...time you learned a weapon of your own. Your Father's shoulders aren't for you to curl around forever."

(Stone Hall is about the size of a city like Seattle or St. Louis or Atlanta. Not mega-huge but enough to be on the map and known. It's a tiered city, that is that it's built on this big slope up from the coastline/beach. There's a lot of sheer cliffs and bluff that the vity is built around, on top of, and within. There's a long stone tunnel that connects the beach to the top most ridge that's covered in Second Age tiles, hence the name. It's used for shipping and fishing purposes.)

How exactly is the bone marrow thing work?

Does it work on other then just Lamia \ Human? You know a couple who have been having problems.

Does she know someone by the name of Tallow?

Has she seen any Lantern coins?

Has the Fifth talked to her again? If so what did he say? Explain what hes told you so far. Get her opinion on heading to Bronze Peak.
>>
>>23903166
"So, I've ordered the Lizard People to night fight back." Granny says as she begins to spar with you, showing you how to should hold the spear and how to swing it. "You should look into a halberd or a pike, it'll respond a bit better than just the jab of a spear, remember, speed is your friend.

"You know you don't exactly have all the time in the world to sit here and play peacemaker. The Humors still have their Lightbringer, and if they feed it to Citadel, then all of this will have been an exercise in futility. No, no, hold the shield like this, it's supposed to move with you."
>>
>>23903208
Stray quote in there without a response.
> Avery says he's willing to wait a little bit for the kid. He is willing to do this quick and quiet. If you don't want to deal with it, then he's going to me marched to the yard outside, head on a stump and a date with an axe.

We shouldn't miss the chance to at least talk to the guy. If he wants to rant the First Stone Hall agenda at us, that's fine.

But it is worth considering that one more stray blow in the battle and this guy wouldn't have needed to wait for an execution. He picked a fight, and probably intended it as a fight to the death; he was just too stupid to realize it was his own.
>>
>>23903146

I imagined it would be less getting openly attacked on the roads and shanked a few times and more people learning how to live with different people.

"Oh, so I'm in this conversation now?" She smirks. "I know I know."

"I can't just leave things here how they are after seeing it for myself. What's the point in stopping Citadel if everything just falls apart to bigotry and hate?"

"Maybe that is the point." Granny says as she tests your shield work with some rapid blows.

"No, I knew things would be different. But the people supporting us give me hopes that it can be overcome. Though it will take time. How are the Lizards fairing?"

"Well enough, there are those that are grateful, and those who don't care, then there are the others. There's been some unpleasant incidents, some one threw a satchel of blast stones in a store with some of them in it. However, any sunlight is better than a life down here."

"How exactly is the bone marrow thing work?"

"Something about the marrow having special blood in it that can cause a woman's egg to hold life." She shrugs. "You extract it from you and put it in her. I'll give you the diagrams when you're ready. I had a Conclave alchemist do it for me, your little ghoul mage might be able to help you with it."

"Does it work on others? I know a couple who have been having problems."

"It should, I would think...provided that we're talking humanoid/humanoid. No no, elbow up...right. But it isn't as if I went around testing the procedure."

"Do you know someone by the name of Tallow?"

"I do not know anyone by that name, sorry." Granny says. "Right, right, just like that little worm! Why do you ask?""

"He might have spoke with the Fifth. Has the Fifth talked to you again?"

"No, there we go, snap your body into it, see you were born for this type of weapon, he's been rather silent with me. That could mean many things, only a few of them good."

"I don't think Tricia and I will be ready any time soon, but we'd both feel more comfortable if we knew more about it."

Also, I'd still like to know what fraction of the lizardfolk speak the common tongue, and what fraction speak only their own language.

> "It should, I would think...provided that we're talking humanoid/humanoid. No no, elbow up...right. But it isn't as if I went around testing the procedure."

That raises some interesting questions. How many people have the same problem the Quails do, and how might they feel if knowledge from the lizardfolk can help them? The First Stone Hall bigots will probably add it to their teachings as a sin, but if they try to go against couples who want kids, they'll fail *hard*. Think of the children, after all.
>>

>>23903326

"Are your people in regular contact with Avery? I know you don't want to reveal yourself, but are there any others who can speak the common language?"

She sighs. "There are a few who can imitate human speech, and they've been playing translators for your Paladin friend. Other than that, I'm afraid the communication barrier is one of the biggest problems." She sighs. "If the Humors know that I'm alive, they'll burn Stone Hall to the ground to get to me, and I'm no match for them...you know that now yes?"

She rubs a hand against your rough skin, the Conclave tincture didn't work as well as you hoped. "Hold on, this will sting." She then bites you in the shoulder.

It does sting, like hell...and your vision goes swimmy, then it goes back to normal. Granny spits out a large mouthful of something onto the floor. "Ugh, glass scorpion, hate those things. GIve yourself long enough, little worm, you'll grow immune to that stuff, eventually."

You feel your arms...they're smooth again, and the black veins on the top of your chest and hands are gone. They're still present around your wrists, and a little web of black around where the bolt hit you. "THAT is a reminder not to be so damn foolish next time."

She sighs. "Now, you'll want to make your own spear and shield. You have ideas for a metal?"

"What about this?" You hold up the Lantern Coin. "Have you seen anything like this?"

She takes the coin, and then strikes it on the stone wall and listens to it's ringing. "You can't make a weapon out of this...not a normal one. And no, I haven't seen any of those coins...I don't trust them. Every time I've seen hope in the form of those coins, the Humors crush it. Don't put your faith in these things...but I suppose there's little else left, is there?"
>>
>>23903441
"Do many of our kind fight with the spear? You mention I was born for it.

Granny nods. "Three times, the last one was your father. I only saw the aftermath. Earlier was an attempt at a bell...that might have worked on Citadel...but the Humors had a counter for that. Before that was a spear...my spear. It didn't work."

"What would you recommend for a metal?"

"Right now? Steel. Your father's sword is quicksilver, but that's not easy to get. Even more so here, with goods at a premium, and you can't get the stuff that's mined for Citadel, steel for now, and look at quicksilver when you reach Bronze Peak."

"Mage was talking about developing a translation spell. His original idea was based on ghoul magic, but he might be able to modify it into a personal communication spell, or with enough luck something for mass communication. Any ideas that might help there?"

She goes to a cabinet and gets a book. "This is something he should read. It's something I got from some people from the Phoenix Empire. It's how they subjugated their own tribes.
