You are a human-form gargoyle crafted of marble set to protect a small town on the frontier of the wild darkness. Your people are still ignorant of what you are, and rightfully so.
Knowledge of what you are would simply prove that they fear you or the monsters among them tempt your destruction.

The prior night, on your patrol, you encountered tales of a Pastor that heals people with the power of god. Within the old burned church, later in your waking hours, you encountered the very same man performing a dark ritual in the ruins of his church.

You had stopped by the ship of a strange man that you know only as "The Stranger" Sensing no life from the man, you had been wary of him, however he bore you no ill will and knew you for what you were. Claiming to be sent by your maker, he offers you your choice of weaponry from his stock. Promising to return within a week's time and offering to trade his wares for "beasties" that you slay.

Selecting Iron and Silver daggers, the man bids you farewell and the ship vanishes.

Among the lake, you encountered a mermaid that introduced herself as Genevieve, or "Genn." She had seemed to mind her own well enough, so you let her go without vanquishing her.

Across the lake, you investigated the howls of the wolves, finding it to be the apparent leftovers of the Werewolf's pack.

Killing two of them, you brought the less mutilated back to town.

A sleep spell had befallen the guardsmen and as you sought to investigate, the sun had begun to rise.

Stashing your equipment, and checking on Molly, you return to your perch to bear the next day.

Fuck yea. Been waiting for this all day Stone Mason.

What are our options?

Also do you think we can get a single Exp point for driving off the wolves for a night and possibly driving them off?
>>
SWEET! Gargoyle Quest.

Well, I guess it's statue time now, all we can do is ears drop.

Things to pay special attention to:
-Any news about the Priest.
-Any news about the Mayor or his household.
-Any mention of the sleep spell. Has anyone noticed that anything happened?
-What the town plans to do with our church, since it's about to be re-opened.

Plus, any reports of 'monstrous' happenings.
>>
>>23862967
Thats not how the Exp works, we get points for absorbing the souls and energy of mansters we have kiled not our actions of protecting the village or doing anything else.
>>
>>23863044
That makes sense. If we are ever low on Exp and know that something big is coming we know where a whole family of monsters are living. Being able to make mist and other illusion magics those mermaids have would be quite useful to our ongoing Stealth route.

Also we should go hunting for a brutal soul. I talked with Stone Mason at the end of yesterdays thread and some of those brutality abilities are fucking epic. Unholy Colossus (or Juggernaut) practically makes us invincible.
>>
Upon your pedestal above the church's door, you gaze upon the new foggy morning.

Extending your senses, you sense that few have risen yet. Unfortunately there is not yet anything you can do about the phenomenon at this time.

With due time however, you feel the priest from the prior night walking up the hill to your church. Turning your vision down, you see that he carries a book of some sort with black binding. Stopping before you, he gives you an intent stare before entering the church. Likely to do some early morning preparations for the mass to be held today.

You regard his presence for some time before ignoring it for now. You can not currently sense magic, even if you tried...

>If we are ever low on Exp and know that something big is coming. we can go murder the innocent family in the lake.

You're not really getting the whole 'Guardian and Protector' thing, are you?
>>
You wait and eventually sense more life approaching your church. Most of the village seems to be in attendance, save for the farmers you can see in the fields to the south of your church.

Among the lives that enter, you sense molly, the two entities from within the mayor's house the prior night, and many more.

You hear no whispers of how anyone's sleep was affected from the prior night. Instead, you hear some women gossiping...

"Did you hear? They found a man near the north gate that had his skull smashed in. Near him, there was a bible."

"Oh, yes, I've heard! My husband says that he must of been some sort of crazy nutter. Naked, in the woods with a bible..."

"But what could have done such an awful thing? Couldn't be the work of wolves, and what with that fire.."

"Oh, look at the statue! It looks so welcoming, whyever did we build another church?"

"Oh, you know. The Square's church was bigger, it could fit all of us. Also, it's in a much better location, at the center of everything, you know."

"Ahh, yes... that's right.. Well, when it's repaired, likely we'll return to it I suppose.."

The women carry on like that and finally enter the church. You feel Molly and her eyes looking upon you. It almost feels odd to be seen by so many at once. You look down and see that she's smiling at you before heading on in.

Pastor Clegane goes through his sermons, preaching about the grace of god and the angels that watch over the town.

He finishes service by asking if anyone has any injuries that they'd like to have healed.

You sense life forces strengthen subtantially as people take turns meeting him. After service is let out, a number of people letting out of the church. Most of them departing complain about the creaks and the dust of the old church.

Molly sticks around and looks up to you,"How are you doing Mr. Angel? I had another nightmare last night about mommy.. Can you ask god if she's okay? Can.. You ask god when they'll stop?"

>>
>>23863564
Murdering the merfolk wouldn't be easy.

We sink in water. We will be slow as fuck underwater, the merfolk would run rings around us.

We might kill one up on the shore, but then no doubt they'll seek revenge and take it out on the fishermen every day while we can't protect them.
>>
>>23863513
>They found a man near the north gate that had his skull smashed in. Near him, there was a bible.

Guess the Werewolf reverts to human form after death. Something to keep in mind for the future.

>you sense the two entities from within the mayor's house
How far can we track life force? Monitor them as best we can.

>[x] Remain Silent.
>>
>>23863534
I felt the same way about you giving us the option of attacking everything yesterday.
>>
>>23863534
If ventriloquism style not-obvious-at-all 2spooky speaking is an option, talking to children is more of a possibility.
Speaking to the people though...
>>
>>23863564
Who said they were monsters? They live in the lake to escape the monsters of the sea. I've seen nothing that suggests they are a threat.

Pre-emptive killing of someone because they might come into conflict with someone, for some reason, at some point, at some time, maybe, possibly....

By that logic we should just kill everyone. Then we KNOW they they won't kill each other.
>>
Molly turns and leaves, "Thank you for listening Mr. Angel!

In your own head, you think. 'You're welcome.'

You turn your attention to the incriminating life sources from before. You sense that one has remained nearby and seems to be with the woman that had been gossiping in front of the church before.

The other has dissapeared into the town, you reach out with your sense to locate it, yet you are distracted by some men that have hung around by the church.

"You hear about that mutilated wolf outside the northeastern wall? It looks like something ate it, there were even bones missing."

"Aye, heard the head was gone.most of the bones too. Some men tried to come back to move it away from the town but it was gone when they returned.."

"This... This is our town, right?"

"Aye, if you want to call it that... The nobility own this town, even the mayor is just a figurehead. You want the owner, you'd better look to that Harlot, Victora Manse."

"Shhh! Don't talk about her! Many of the women are in her circle! If she hears about this, you're like to get guard duty!"

"Bah, I'll say what I want. Guard duty's not as bad as not knowing what's out there..."

"Speaking of that, Cedrik Sherphard's told tales of the wolves taking his flock in the night!"

"Seems those mangy muts aren't done with us yet.."

The men depart, and nothing more of particular interest circles around.

You spend the afternoon feeling around the town for that other presence. You locate it in the direction of the town's center. It does not move during the day, yet in the eve, it begins to move about, heading for the wood and beyond the range of even your finest focus.

The woods are dangerous, why would anyone venture out there.. alone at that?

Some sort of scavengers? Might be a good ides to check it out. Maybe put out some bait and hide in the shadows, watch for a while and see what turns up.

Might be nothing to worry about, but probably best to check.

>Cedrik Sherphard's told tales of the wolves taking his flock in the night!
Looks like it's wolf season! We need bait anyway.

>>
>>23863944

Make note of the direction. At sundown we'll see if we can find a trail.
>>
It is worth investigating, yes. Some monsters can take human form.

The priest is a blood mage, your senses told you that he saw you last night when you were leaving after looking at him performing a ceremony, and he started too intently at you for it to be a coincidence. We should speak to him before he sets the congregation to shatter us during the day, he would be the ideal caretaker.

Also, we told the mermaid to not cause trouble but we never told her we protect the humans, all she knows is that we are something inhuman. We should clarify what we meant.
>>

>>
>>23864106

>>
>>23864106

>>
Lets find this Victora Manse

>>23864124
He is performing dark magicks for good deeds, or is secretly evil.
He is either an ideal caretaker (pillar of community can speak on our behalf, we stash ourselves and our stuff in church, can teach us magic)
Or he is secretly evil and would serve as a meal.

However, it is perhaps premature to speak to him right now. Nonetheless if he does know or suspect then being silent is a good way to be killed in our sleep. If we don't deal with him one way or another then we should hide away during the day somewhere safer then the top of a church.
>>
>>23864076
>we told the mermaid to not cause trouble but we never told her we protect the humans, all she knows is that we are something inhuman. We should clarify what we meant.

Good point. In fact, maybe we should work out some sort of SOP.

Just so we don't delay the quest for two hours deciding what to say every time we meet something new.

I recommend some sort standard greeting.
Tell them: We are the Guardian of this place. Ask who & what they are. Tell them we mean no ill will but warn them not to harm our charges.

Unless this is something that is clearly hostile/already attacking. Like the Werewolf.
In that case, no talking, just kill it.
>>
>>23864173
What dishonorable intentions? All we know is that he is able to crystallize his blood through a ritual involving a circle of Protection and heal wounds.

He may turn out to be good. Also if he knew about us and wanted us gone he would have attempted to destroy us during the day when we can do absolutely nothing.
>>
A note: You sense life inside the church, do you still retrieve your equipment?
>>
>>23864106
[x] Don your cloak.
[x] Retrieve your daggers from the church.

[x] Head to the northern woods.
If the trail is hot, we'll follow it while we have the lead. If the trail is cold.
[x] Check out Shephard's fields.
>>
>>23864254
Wow you are really trying to push this priest encounter. Fine still go grab our stuff.
>>
>>23864254
Do we know who this life is?

If it's the Priest, he already knows about us. While I think we should keep him at arms length and continue observing him 'till we know more, it's not like we need to hide from him either. He already knows we move.

If it's not him, wait a while, see if they just leave. If they don't seem to be leaving, go without our stuff.
>>
>>23864210
I like it, I would replace "guardian of this place" with "guardian of these humans". It is an important distinction.

>>23864211
I tend to also think he is most likely "good"
But we aren't sure the ritual was of protection. All we know is that we sensed it was dark magic and that he said the bloodletting would make them stronger. Stronger could be achieved via summoning monsters to weed out the weak. (I am not saying that it is likely, only that it is possible)..

@Stone Mason: When we saw him perform the ritual, he was blood letting into a ruby chalice on an altar... were we able to identify what god was this alter to?
>>
>>23864331
This seems most sensible, but are we not a creature of stealth? Can we not sneak through the church to get our shit and go with whoevers inside none the wiser?
>>
>>23864254
Can we enter stealthily?
>>
>>23864374

The altar was to the human "God."
>>
You wait upon your perch for a moment as you sense a presence within the church. Proceeding without your equipment is in all liklihood a bad move, especially proceeding without your cloak.

After some time passes, you feel that the life has at least gone to sleep for the night.

With that, you land as gently as possible and weave your shadows into the darkness of the church, heading directly to your stash while avoiding creaking boards.

With your daggers on your hips and your makeshift cloak around you... you find that there is a much finer tapestry of red and gold within the church now that you could possibly wear, do you take it?

>[] Yes
>[] No.

It would replace your still dusty, and progressively tattering cloak as it is now...
>>
>>23864374
>I would replace "guardian of this place" with "guardian of these humans"

Are we limited to only Humans?
People with legs. People with fish-tails.
If they live peacefully within our territory, I'd view them all them same.
>>
>>23864457
[X] Yes

We ought to look the part, it's hard to be intimidating if you wear something falling apart.
>>
>>23864457
>[x] No

It's not like a Gargoyle has vanity. Stealing the new decorations from the church is sure to be noticed and call attention to our roost.
>>
>>23864457
[X] No

The priest already suspects us, and we don't know anything about him yet. No reason to antagonize him by swiping the new tapestry.
>>
>>23864457
I'm not sure. Its probably more flashy than our current one, which should impact our stealth negatively.
On the other hand looking like a beggar kinda sucks.

I say take it. Our magic will make up it.
>>
>>23864457
>[X] No
As long as it covers our identity we dont need anything more lavish.
>>
>>23864457
Leave it there. We're trying to be stealthy, not flashy. Besides, the priest would probably suspect something was up if he finds his tapestry missing.
>>
You decide not to take the cloak. It would be against your interest and it is far too flashy to suit your purposes. You leave without a second look at it, heading out of the church.

You wing over the town, heading to the northern wood to track down that presence that had vanished there in the evening. Reaching out, you feel a powerful life-force coming from the north-east.

And several smaller ones to the far north, the same direction where you had last detected your suspect.

Which direction do you go?

>[] North
>[] North-east
>[] Return to the Town.
>>
>>23864457

No - don't need to draw attention to ourselves or make anyone suspicious.
>>
>>23864457
No, its stealing from our charges, it is going to make the priest suspicious, and the only reason we wear anything is for stealth.
If anything, we should find a way to dye our tattered sheet black.

>>23864465
Well, we were explicitly made to guard only humans, but I am not averse to extending that to others.
Monsters is behavior not appearance.
How about "people"? "innocent"? Or just outright explain?

>several smaller ones to the far north
Can you make out a number and could you recognise these if you detected them again?

Assuming this powerful thing doesn't take all night we can come back to this later.
>>
>>23864576
north

We need to know if there is some cult or ritual thing going on, or even if there is a monster amung our charges.
>>
>>23864576
Let's make a quick pass over the smaller life signatures on our way to investigating the larger one, as it would appear that monsters flock to our little hamlet like moths to a light. (Scout the north signatures then investigate the big one.)
>>
Powerful is tempting, but I say we go for the multiple weaker ones where we last detected our suspect.
If the suspect is innocent she could be in danger, and if she is a monster in human skin then we need to find out about it ASAP.
>>
>>23864589
How about-

"I am the Guardian of this place and its people." Ect, ect.

Simple, to the point. Well?
>>
You fly northward to get a quick scan of the life forms, attempting to discern their number and type.

You sense the one from the village and clusters of those that would likely to be wolves. The one from the village seems to be alone and heading further north and into the night.

The life signature from the northeast as relocated itself to the south, heading towards the village...
>>
Your action?
>>
>>23864733

He's heading towards our charges! Intercept the bastard!
>>
>>23864733
>>23864745

With the threat of the wood heading for your people, you wing forward and dive down aiming at the potentially threatening signature.

As you close in, you see that there are swathes of forest that have been degraded and corroded. From patch to patch of dessicated wood, there is a path of destroyed trees with the life signature traveling through an already made trail to your village.

It seems that the creature has already made quite the fair path earlier in the day, and it seeks to return this night.

As you near the creature, you see it for what it is, trudging along at a slow and steady pace. With the darkness, you cannot make out it's entire form, yet you understand well enough to know that it towers over you by at least twice your size...

It continues to steadily head for the town, a pair of smaller...

>[] Engage the monster head on with your daggers!

>[] Retreat, this... this is too much.

Sounds good, so in summary, the SOP is:
1. If it is hostile, mindless, or seeks to harm our people kill it outright with no negotiations.
2. If it appears reasonable and non hostile give the following spiel:
"I am the Guardian of this place and its people, both humans and the non-hostile inhuman"
"I mean you no harm so long as you mean no harm to my charges"
"Who are you? what are you? and what are your intents?"

"I am the Guardian of this place and its people" Sounds good. We don't need to specify species unless it comes up for some reason.
>>
1. It is going straight for town.
2. Everything in its path rots and dies.
Hostile force detected, as per SOP kill it with no warning...

However, I would like to first circle it and observe it in more detail so that we could try to determine any weak points..
>>
>>23865286
>Everything in its path rots and dies
That might just mean it's a foul bastard. It might not be intentional or optional.

It might not know there is a town ahead.

I say give it our standard warning. If it turns around and goes away... Fine. If it proves hostile or just mindless, strike unseen from the shadows!
>>
>>23865286

Yes, approach as stealthily as possible to examine it.
>>
>>23865377
Agreed, before we speak/attack/whatever, remain unseen and get a good look at it.

Potential weak spots:
Eyes. Groin. Neck. Achilles tendons.

Even if we do speak to it, remain unseen. Then if we do need to attack we still retain some element of surprise.
>>
You descend among the shadows of the trees, staying out of the way of the huge and imposing creature. You take note that it seems to be moving rather slowly, despite the carved path. In the light of the waning moon, you see that the creature is covered in vegetation, yet the life around it flickers and withers.

You have determined that it is indeed a threat to the town, and with it heading for your territory, your instincts scream at you to kill it.

However, you subdue the impulse, examining the creature intently. Its eyes glow faintly with an unearthly sickness, it moans with a "Gwwohhhh...." that carries on into the night.

A nearby tree whithers from its breath.

Searching for vulnerabilities, you determine that its legs are rather thin at the knee, and overall its body is lanky.

It may topple easily if its legs or feet are taken out.

There are several strange growths on its flesh among the vegetation with strange glowing yellow sprouts... those may be of interest as well.

They are scattered around its body.

Its eyes are another potential target, though riskier. They are large and round, the size of plates. A dagger to its eyes may be just the thing you need to put it down.

It seems not to notice you as of yet.

It trudges along with its path. It will likely reach the town in an hour at its current rate.

You will not let this creature threaten your charges.

With silent resolve, you step out from the shadows of the tree, around to its rear, drawing closer and closer through the bed of leaves, unnoticed due to your shadow and natural subtlety. Within appropriate range, you draw your daggers and leap at the leg of the collosal creature, sinking each of your daggers deep into the backs of the creature's knees, planting yourself firmly on its calves before slicing the blades to the inside ( -><-) and pushing off as it falls to the ground in a forced kneel. It roars into the night.

The thing swats back at you futiley, however it does not seem to know where you are. The creature begins to plant its hands into the ground, seeming to want to get up. . .

It is aware of you now, however it seems to not know where you are. You cut a major tendon in its knees, however it is trying to stand...

We should wait until we see what potential traits we could gain from absorbing its life-force.

Knowing nothing about it, I'd have voted against absorbing a werewolf given that it's a savage creature that can't even control its own form. But the traits on offer were almost all decent in some way.

Are you waiting for more rolls? IIRC it is best of 3 only for DC checks, for combat its 3 of ours vs 3 of the monsters executed in order. So... rolling.

>>23865773
We should absorb it, we should just convert it to general XP.
If we rolled on werewolf we could have become week to silver, with the banshee we could have become forced to feed on humans to survive. Absorbing whole means rolling and is a big risk that carries a reward worth 3x-5x more XP; when we absorb something as general XP we unlock the ability to spend power to unlock the good traits they have. So we should on principle absorb everything as general XP barring unusual circumstances. Growth will be slower but we will not go insane, develop a hunger for human flesh, or gain terrible weaknesses that will get us killed.

You close in upon the creature as it begins to flex its arms and fuitlely tries to stand, its legs beginning to bleed out a green fluid.

You see an arm coming for you as you wing off to its front, the creature collapsing further upon the ground due to its injuries.

Its sick yellow eyes glare at you with anger, slowly turning red as it uses its gangly left arm to force itself toward you, cleaving the earth itself with its fingers, a part of you bears some relief that it hadn't actually caught you.

Its eyes are locked on you and it is advancing despite its injuries. It only has one good arm currently...

You retreat into the shadows at the bumbling monsters advance, its eyes remain locked on you even as you conceal your form.

You strafe around to take out the monster's other arm, losing sight of it behind trees, you bound out at your target only to see that its eyes are still locked onto you, and the flailing arm comes down upon your solid body. If you weren't so durable, you'd likely have suffered cracks from the sheer force. Stuck in the ground, to your shins, you are slammed by a backhand from the creature, knocking you through trees, that break your impact.

You feel a crack running through your wings that slowly heals itself as you don the shadows once more, going around fully to the monster's back, its eyes not upon you, you find that its spinal column is for the most part exposed from its gangly and horrid form.

Cutting deep, the monster unleashes a thunderous roar in pain as it flails about, only to give you the time for more deep and numerous strikers.

Getting ahead of yourself, you stab up its back and reach around to take out its eyes, only to feel the pressure of both of its hands upon you.

Grabbing you by the wings, it slams you into a tree, a light fracture running through your body before it tosses you into the air, allowing you to regain control midair, via your wings.

You feel the new cracks in your body begin to start healing as well...

The best plants its hands upon the ground and slowly tries to stand once more. Its arms are back within function, however it soon falls due to its legs not working.

It seems your attacks to its spine have been effective.

You fly higher into the night sky, focusing on the horrid thing's life as you set your daggers into reverse grip. Plunging down onto the creature's body, you face the two daggers forward and angle your wings to adjust your trajectory.

You yell out loud at the beast to draw its attention at the last moment and tuck your wings in before contact.

The shout made the creature turn its ugly saucer eyes directly into your attack, driving your daggers deep into the weak organs and crushing its face in with your weight, forcing the creature down as it screams horribly.

You force out your daggers from its crushed face and while using its shoulders as footholds after a flap of your wings, you drive the bite of your dagger into the base of its skull, causing its arms to go limp. The Creature wails into the night, startling birds from their trees, with its final breath, cut short with a blade across its horrible flesh.

The troll has been slain and you wrap your wings around the corpse, reaping your reward...

Bury it here. Taking to town is too risky, and placing it in the lake in a recipe for spreading its decay/corruption.

Alternatively, we bury the head in the graveyard and the body here so if we lose one hopefully we can still have value from the other (although I'm sure the entire thing is more valuable.)

Considering the instant rot that the troll caused and the possibility it was diseased I don't want its corpse anywhere near the town.

We need to find a nearby cave to stash those corpses in. For now quickly and roughly "bury" it where it fell (cover it up with stuff so animals wont eat it) and leave some markers, then go after our suspect from before, maybe you can still catch her doing something tonight.
>>

I'd rather keep it away from the towns water source.

Later, when we're on patrol or scouting the area we can keep an eye out for a suitable cave or something. For now, just leave it here.

It's to big and funky for anything to carry off or eat. We can come back later if we want it.

You remove the horrid green blood from your daggers and take flight into the night once more, heading north after your primary suspect.

The troll was a convenient diversion, yielding strength that you had not gotten from the prior night.

You carry on north until you sense the familiar life. You can feel that it's heading towards the south at this point, returning to the town.

The other small lives in the area, the feral ones, seem to have departed, and this person is alone...

It's familiar in that it's been sensed before.

Isn't this totally redundant since we can already recognize who it is via familiarity with our life sense?
Since she is returning to town she somehow survived the hungry wolves, very suspicious and worth investigating more. Keep spying on her as per:

We recognise this life-force as one of the two in the mayors house. We do not know the name or face of this life-force.

Or what it is up to out here. We need to learn more.

You land some distance from your suspect.

Among the trees and shroud in your woven shadows, you trail them, closing in to attempt to see who the person is.

Among the shadows, you can see that the person's build is thin, lanky. With broader shoulders like that of a man. The rest of their form is hidden under a cloak.

They move hastily as though with conviction. They carry with them a lantern in one hand, and what seems to be some kind of book in the other...

>>
>>23868180
True it would be, but we can do that once it reaches back to town by simply observing where this familiar life-force sleeps. It did what it wanted in the woods and will likely reveal little on the path back.

If it is the mayor this might be a golden opportunity to search his house. If the mayor house is occupied then we can double back and track him the rest of the way.

If we do insist on following it through the woods we should lure a threatening animal in his direction so we can observe how he deals with it.

Creeping about in the darkness, you follow the suspect for some way, monitoring their every move... However it cklicks in you, that they've already done what they had intended.. So to pursue would likely hold no merit.. Unless you found their home.

However, there are things you can still do at this point.

You find a small enough pebble nearby and fling it into some bushes, rustling the leaves.

At the sound, the person turns and a flash of ghastly white energy flashes from their palm, withering the plants.

"Damn Wolves. Thought I'd driven those mangy beasts off..."

The man waits for a moment, seeming to be listening.

"They whine..." He whispers.

"Who is out there!? Show yourself!" He shouts, pulling together more of that pale light into both of his palms, ready to vanquish the responder.

It's a man, and in the light, you see that he has a few scars on his cheek, likely from a clawed beast, and a short moustache with a light beard. His hair is.. Well, you can't tell the style or the color right now.

With shadows obscuring your form, you circle to his rear and grab his wrists, forcing him down to the ground by twisting his arms over his head, pinning his palms to the back of his neck.

In control with your unnatural strength, the man struggles and screams into the dirt, flailing and kicking.

Not desiring to risk your exposure, you press the man's hands into his neck with one hand, relieve him of his book. With a push, you keep his face down as he struggles.

He attempts to speak, to throw curses, however they are muffled by the leaves and dirt you are currently allowing him to eat.

You quickly slip away into the dark of the trees, seeing him cast that light at random, rapidly dessicating sevreal trees that it its. He breathes heavily with his frustration," Return it to me! I will have your soul, whatever you are!" You draw distance between the two of you, peering at his faintly glowing magic as he brings both hands together to charge a spell.

"Die!" He brings the energy down and the light explodes outward, withering and defiling the land in an instant, you are clear out of his range however.

Dense Marble and Mind Whisper seem the most practical right now.

Mind Whisper & Obfuscation

If we can get Mind Peer this will be SOOO much easier!

>>
>>23869472
Since two other guys think Obfucation, what does it even do?
>>
>>23869472
We should save up 6XP for Soul Siphon: Higher exp yield from monsters. Reduces risk of negative side effects from trait assimilation. 4-10 become positive chance

But if we are unwilling to make that investment then do as per:
>>23869495
>>
>>23869526
Obfuscation

2XP. Req: Mind Whisper, & Subtlety. You further reduce the impact that mortals can sense your presence. So long as they are not magic sensitive, or specifically looking for you, they may lay their eyes over your shadows and see nothing.
>>
>>23869495
Actually scratch that. Save them, get Soul Siphon once we get 6. It's the best long-term choice as it will pay for itself after a few monsters once we get it.
>>
>>23869526
All abilities have been listed on the wiki:

Thirding mind whisper and dense marble.
>>
>>23869511

> Mind Whisper

>Allows you to put subtle whispers into the minds of mortals. Their consciousness is weak. When you whisper them, their mind gains a small link to you. Allows you to enter their dreams with more training. They feel your presence.

>Obfuscation
>You further reduce the impact that mortals can sense your presence. So long as they are not magic sensitive, or specifically looking for you, they may lay their eyes over your shadows and see nothing.

Sounds like a plan; basic immunity from some random ass guard saying "HEY GUISE LOOK A GARGOIL"

Just because I like to mess with you guys.

The Troll unlocked your primal magic.

I don't have the specifics for the spells written for the magic, however you now have access to it.

The Banshee was Fae, however she was more spirit/undead than possessing knowledge of Fae magic.

Fae is still locked.
>>
>>23869607
>>23869596

wait wait wait

We already have have:

>Angelic Savior (Acquired)
>Initial. Having chosen Wings in combination with Humanoid and Marble at character creation causes the trait "Angelic" in which humans see you as their angelic savior should they witness you.

Why do we care if normal people see us if we'll be taken as an angel? We should save for the siphon ability.
>>
>>23869472
Save for Siphon, due to reasoning pointed out >>23869555
and
>>23869539
>>
does dense marble give bonus to defense or is it just for stealth?

if its just stealth then obfuscate is way better
>>
>>23869498
Changing from that to mind whisper and dark forge. If we can make our own weapons we don't need to worry about buying that much from the vendor except specialist materials.
>>
>>23869639
I voted for saving for siphon ability.
I just argued that obfuscation is superior to dense marble. Dense marble is good for extra HP, reduced damage, and dealing more damage to enemies. it ALSO allows compressing wings for stealth but that is more of a marginal bonus.

>>23869618
Oh my, this will take some time to enter in the wiki...
Does shape earth apply to stone? Cause I am imagining a 10 foot wide 100 foot tall spike of stone in middle of town.... Stash, perch, etc... I would like to see anything climb climb it to assassinate us in our sleep. And entomb self in stone during day
>>
>>23869618
This isn't an issue for now but I really want Shape Earth and Fertile Land.

The town will fucking love us. They won't have a clue who/what we are but they'll still be happy.
>>
>>23869618
while we are discussing the points and where they should go, you are writing the town activity right
>>
>>23869674
It gives a bonus on top of Solid Marble to defense. That combined with our regen would make us really fucking tough.

I think getting dense Marble and Mind Whisper would help us get to Soul Siphon fast (and intact)
>>
You return to your church, landing before the building, you sense that same life that had been within, still residing here, and still asleep. It is indeed foreign, it doesn't feel like the priest.

You have decided to take this tome to candle-light and discern its nature... But who is in here? Does it truly matter to you?

In regards to archiving, a thread should be archived immediately upon creation. The archiving process will regularly check it for updates and add them to the archive until the thread is deleted. By starting it right away you:
1. Prevent the thread from being lost by accident (nobody archives it and it autosages)
2. Prevent a troll from archiving it under a false name and bad tags. (seen it happen on several quests sadly).

You only lose the ability to describe what happened in THIS thread by archiving early (but you can drop a hint or you can describe what happened last thread)
>>
You enter the church, determined to find out who it is that's been sleeping in your.. well yes, your church.

You open the doors, delivering a small creak and carry on to find the signature. Moving to the back of the church, and avoiding known loose floorboards, you turn and open the door of the old sleeping chamber of the priest.

Within, you find a young woman sleepin in the corner of the room wearing rags. It seems likely that she has no home as it is yet... something seems... off about her...

Examine further, maybe you can detect something.

Isn't there a nice new tapestry here? we could cover her with that.

[X] Other

Lets go read the book now.
>>
>>23869872

Once we lay it upon her then reveal ourselves.
>>

leave her alone for now

she doesnt seem to be immediate threat, we are familiar with her life force now abd can observe her the following day, for now we should concentrate on the book

>>23869907
seconding this
>>
>>23869905
She might be Fae blooded or something but we don't want to reveal our self.

If the metal burns her and wakes her up, we'll have a repeat of the earlier problem.

[x]Leave her for now. Read the book.

i find it funny that because shes a "young woman" we suddenly want to cover her with a nice tapestry, even though something is off with her

It's a warn summer night. She's fine. Just leave her and read the book.

We can check on her later if you want to.

Kind of love that possible supernatural or not, you guys are choosing not to kill something just for exp.
>>
>>23869907
>reveal ourselves

WHY? Why do you want to reveal ourselves to a random stranger we don't know anything about.

It's a warm summer night, she doesn't need covering up.

Just let her enjoy her sleep and get on with reading the book.
>>
[X] Leave her.

There's no need to alert her to the fact that someone else was in the church by laying something over her.
>>
>>23870026
We didn't kill the Mermaid, yet. We have a rather simple flow chart that indicates if we murder something or not.
>>
Lets say she's just a bit weird and isn't in cahoots with some evil force. If the priest wakes up and asks her why she took the tapestry down they're either going to fight or he'll believe her when she says she didn't take it down and they'll both get suspicious. Leave her and lets read the book already.
>>
You stare at her for a few moments, and do not let the kindness in your heart get the better of you. Interaction with mortals is trouble after all.

You leave and you sense that the woman's consciousness flickers, giving you pause, yet she remains asleep. You grab a candle from the altar and take a look at that mage's tome...

There are no words upon the cover. It seems that the book is bound in leather..

Opening the pages of the book, you cannot quite read the language or the flow that it is written in... However there are indeed pictures. The pictures show skeletons, removal of hearts, and on a dog-eared page, there is a depiction of a magic circle that seems to involve a skeletal man wearing robes with a halo.

How... odd...

The only thing we'll do is mess with her head if she sees us.

Head for the north of town and intercept the wizard. Trail him and see what else we can learn. If he returns to the mayors house we might be able to ears drop and learn something.
>>
>>23870133
assuming the alter has been consecrated by real holy magic.
The priest is using dark magic for protection and healing so probably not.

Skeletal man with halo could be angel of death?

I would hide it and then check up on the mayor house.
>>
>>23870104
could we get a pen and piece of paper and write "property of evil mage do not take without permission or i will steal your soul >:(" and put it on the cover of the book and chuck it at the door of the guards barracks.
>>
>>23870104
[x] Stash it for later. Then intercept the wizard and follow him.

See if we can over hear anything once he gets back to the mayors house. (assuming he returns there)
>>
Tearing off a small piece of your cloak, you wrap the book up and put out the candle betwixt your marble fingers.

Setting the candle back upon the altar, you place the book within your hiding hole beneath one of the floorboards.

Leaving the church, you take to the sky and fly around the northern part of town, feeling for the man who had cast that strange life nullifying magic.

You sense him a ways off. he had left in the late evening so he can't be making good time in his return. Heading toward the town square, you visit the mayor's house once more. You feel the presence of the same life from the previous night within, the one that had stayed at the church to mingle with the chatty women.

Who could be in here? Are they involved with the mage that you had the... 'pleasure' to meet?

What will you do from here?

This person is sleeping.

ONLY if we can do so silently.

If we feel him stirring GTFO before he finds out who was breaking in.

Be sure to sense for the wizard. We don't want to lose track of time and get caught when he walks in.

Check the basement and sub-basement if we can.
>>
break in

We know of only 3 individuals able to resist the odd sleep that overtook the guards the other knight.
The withering light mage, the priest blood-mage, and some person sleeping in mayor house. I bet the withering light mage is the mayor and the sleeping person is Victora Manse and is also a mage.

From the sky, you land upon the roof, taking care not to damage the tile.

This house's roof is blue, and you see that it is definietly more well established than most of the houses in the town...And you're going to break in.

You check around for a window and eventually do find one, however it is locked. you go from window to window between the roof of the house and the sides, finding none of the possible entries open except... The door to the cellar is open.

Entering, you find that it contains many barrels upon wooden racks. nothing of particular interest or concern.

You root around the cellar for some time, however it doesn't seem to lead anywhere, nor is there anything of interest here...

You found a ledger that contains the purchases.. However nothing stands out as... "suspicious"
