You are princess Lydia Tannhäuser Von Cygnus Gates the third. Second in line to the throne, and recently named director of the Royal Rocketry Corps.
You have decided to recover from your setbacks by taking a vacation in the eastern isles. Bringing your rockets with you to test out shipboard and equatorial launches. Your brother has been glad to help you.

Rewinding back to the departure because last night i kept going after everyone had clearly gone to bed, sorry about that,
All posts must use the royal we. Any suggestion unfitting a princess will be ignored.

We shall make it known that the Rocketry Corps is assisting the Navy with a military project. Also that another attempt at reaching orbit shall be made.
We shall be somewhat scarce on the details, as the first is a military project and we do not wish to violate their secrecy.
We shall order Fort Adler to have their radio receivers trained to the heavens when the launch is expected, in order to catch the first radio transmission from a man-made object in orbit.

You and your entourage are currently riding aboard the HMS Avalon, largest aircraft carrier in the royal navy. As you are away from home, no RnD may be done this turn. Your current inventory consists of.

3 Mk2s
>Type: Probe, Mass 1, Reliability 4/3
1 Mk3
>Type: First stage, Mass 1, Reliability 5/3

In the event of an emergency, the rockets may be pushed overboard to allow full use of the Avalon's flight decks.
You currently have one luck point.
>>

Last night it was voted to keep the departure a secret. But as I admitted, I should have ended sooner as most of the players went to bed by that time.

Do you wish to vote to release a public statement while underway?
>>
>>23849034
I do, but it does not appear that there are many players here yet.
And I only want a barebones press release.

There is still the chance we may need to dump the Mk3-Mk2 due to a military emergency.

We should ask our brother to get our cargo out of the way as soon as possible, compatibly with military necessity; also, see how the sailors feel about having a part in this however small. Is the extra manual labor offset by interest in the endeavor?

Yes, also check out the new map. Consider the old one retconed.

Life aboard the Avalon is a change of pace compared to the palace. The captain has lent you his quarters but even then you've had closets bigger than this. Oh but it's all so exciting!

The colonel reacts to sea travel the wost. Aside from being seasick, he earned his rank in the Air Force before being re-assigned to the rocket corps. He finds working with the navy to be a cruel irony. He's not spiteful, but he's taken by the absurdity of it all. "The gods must be tormenting us for our Heresy" he jokes between vomiting over the safety railing.

The mission plan is to unload the MK3 and MK2 onto an Atoll to assemble them into the completed rocket and launch from there. Then on the way back use the launch site as a target for the remaining two MK2s.
As you approach the island however, an alarm rings out. "Attention attention, all hands to battlestations, unidentified aircraft is approaching our airspace."

What do?
>>
>>23849404
We shall find and ask the captain or our brother, whichever we find first, how best we should stow our rockets to not be in the way.
>>
>>23849404

Try to convince them not to dump the rocket in their haste to scramble everything.
>>
>>23849534

Very much this.

Your brother is on the other ship, The Battleship Staberinde. You can radio him from the bridge of the Avalon.
As you get to the bridge the Captain tells you that it's just one airplane and that the interceptors can be launched from the second flightdeck.

You also overhear the following exchange over the radio. "Unidentified aircraft this is HMS Avalon, you are entering restricted airspace, change course or you will be fired upon."
The reply however is a voice you recognize.
"Mayday mayday Avalon, this is comet two, requesting permission emergency landing, am critically low on fuel, over"
You then hear a third voice, a woman with a sutland accent.
"Oh no, ah they going to shoot us down? I thought you said they were fiends? Princess Taunhauser are you there! I was at your party! I'm sorry your rocket didn't launch, I got worried when you didn't answer my letters. Please let us land!"

The Male voice belongs to none other than Sir Harker, The crimson count. His female companion is Jacksan Kenaway, the daughter of the Merikan president. How in Orphan's hell did they find you all the way out here?
>>
>>23849598
That's interesting.

Well, we don't want to seem bossy, telling the Navy what to do, but if we can identify the person then we should vouch for their identity and let everyone know they're not a danger.
>>
>>23849633

seeing as though the Avalon is under our brothers duristiction, we should do our best to stay out of the way while they take care of the landing of the aircraft. hopefully they will not need the second runway for that...
for now, keep to checking the parts and running some simulations on the new navel guidance system.
>>
>>23849636
Your brother's voice is heard over the radio. "Is that who I think it is? Sir Harker your stunts are getting more and more outrageous, what are you doing with that Suthland woman all the way out here? All ships, scramble interceptors but hold your fire!"

>>Just happened to be flying around. Outside our borders, low on fuel, with a foreign head of state.

Bullshit. Nobody that stupid could have survived as a pilot. Hell he probably would have swallowed his tongue years ago. No, this is one of his games, we just need to figure out the angle. Let him land, for now.

Sir Harker is probably just trying to do something needlessly complicated in order to get laid. We should tell the ship's captain that we recognize the voice.

(Second flight deck? Is this what the Avalon looks like: http:images/1364074860671.jpg )
>>
>>23849891
More or less yes, Around that size and shape, but the armament is less absurd. Only two battleship turrets, the rest are flack emplacements.

"Clear the second deck and deploy the crash-net, that air-force sonofabitch isn't even qualified for carrier landings!" The captain forgets a lady of royal blood is in the room as he turns red and shouts orders to the crew. "And make sure the rockets are covered up. Espionage and treason! Tell the Marines! I want the pilot arrested as soon as it's safe!"

Eventually you spot a small red jet airplane flying towards the Avalon flanked by two Blue naval interceptors. It comes down very fast and hard, almost crashing into the deck, but it manages to catch the arrestor cables and comes to a complete stop just short of the net.
>>
>>23849779
If he's low on fuel, we suppose we can let him land, as long as that won't require dumping the rockets. If it will, tell him to ditch and have a boat pick him up.
>>
>>23850028

We have had our hands on our heart the entire time and applaud the landing -- this may be a stupid stunt, but we're happy that nobody got hurt. We make sure we stay out of the way of the security detail, but pull rank to go see what happens to Harker as close as possible. At the very least we should make sure M. Kenaway is treated courteously.

You race down to the flight deck as sir Harker steps out of the aircraft, his hands raised in the air with a shit eating grin on the half of his face not covered by the mask. After him comes Ms Kenaway in a yellow dress and looking absolutely terrified.

The marines approach them slowly with swords and automatics.
>>

We may as well intercede on his behalf. It would be nice to get some answers out of him, and it's not as if he's going anywhere.... Then if we don't like his answers we can let the sailors do whatever they want with him.
>>
>>23850150
Kenaway then turns to Sir Harker and slaps him hard, "Harker you bastard! You said you could take me to her, not that she'd be in the middle of the ocean!" She then sees you and turns to address you directly, forgetting to bow or anything, "I'm so sorry you higness. I got worried when you didn't answer my letters, so I asked Mr Harker to find you for me. I didn't mean for this to happen!"

>>23850227
The marines search the airplane before grabbing Harker, who is still grinning in silence, and clapping him in irons. They don't seem to know what to do about Kenaway.
>>
>>23850264
We should probably extend our hospitality to Miss Kenaway to ensure her safety, and keep her within our quarters to prevent her from snooping around too much.
>>

She's part of a royal family (or whatever passes for it in the south). We should make sure she's shown every courtest available. And, I dunno, I guess we could be nice to Harker too? Probly .
>>
>>23850264
Remind us, where do we know Kenaway from? Anyway, ask why she felt it was so pressing that she needed to come in person. Also, how the hell did Harker know we were out here? Her explanation leads us to believe that he knew exactly where to find us. Was there a leak? Have someone interrogate Harker about that.
>>
>>23850290

While underway the captain is God, so we must make sure we go through him. First off, welcome Ms. Kenaway as politely as possible in order to defuse things, but don't tell anyone what to do.
>>
>>23850290
Yes, while we need to apologize to her for being unable to respond to her letters, we also need to let her know the situation she's got herself into.

>>23850308
Southern royalty, we invited her to the party two sessions ago.
>>
Ms Kenaway is the daughter of the president of the city state of Merika. She wanted to talk to you after the failed launch, but was unable to get in contact, Eventually she asked Sir Harker to help her. She didn't expect him to fly her into the middle of the ocean without enough fuel to get home however, nor did she intend to interrupt a secret military exercise. She begs you not to tell her father, and tells you she'd hate to have a war start over her selfishness.

Sir Harker reassures you that there is no security leak, although he does say that what he has just done was both treason and espionage, adding that only your pardon can spare him from the gallows. He's only half joking too. He explains that it was by powers of deduction that he managed to track you down. You disappeared on the same day the fleet launched with some suspicious objects covered in tarps on the deck of the Avalon. He doesn't say how he was able to find the Avalon's exact location, but tells you it was a leap of faith.
>>
>>23850428
What a dick.

I suppose we had better put him under our protection, but we should make it clear that he owes us. In a gentile manner, of course.
>>

Clearly Harker is a Big Damn Hero and expects the rules to not apply to him. Do we like the guy? (Not in that way).

>>23850471

Maybe we can talk our brother and the captain into signing over custody to us? Doubtlessly it'll start lewd rumors... at the same time, this is a useful element.
>>
>>23850428
We shall tell Sir Harker that we shall think upon the matter.
Then we must speak with the captain, and request that Ms. Kenaway be extended diplomatic considerations, as she is the daughter of a nation's leader.
>>
>>23850471
No better idea, have him serve his time working for the RRC.
>>
>>23850471

I find this to be a most inticing idea, however, I doubt that 'conditional recruitment' for test astronauts is a particularly good practice...

maybe ask what he thinks of testing new avation equipment and going higher than any man has ever gone before...
>>
>>23850509
I thought he already indicated his interest last time we talked.
>>
>>23850509

Clearly this one guy is going to be a special case no matter what the situation. Plus the nobility might appreciate that for all our progressive talk we stick with our own if it's possible to do so chivalrously.
>>
>>23850452
Well, for his obvious failings, he is an excellent pilot, and clearly not afraid to take risks. Also, his celebrity status might aid us in gaining additional funding. He would make a valuable asset for the RRC, once he's reigned in a bit. Can a royal pardon be revoked? If so, then we should pardon him- on the condition that he joins, and behave himself.
>>
Sir Harker grins even harder, almost as if he had planned it this way, before standing up and bowing to you. "I accept your generous offer your highness."
>>
>>23850621
Punch some of his fucking teeth out.

>>
>>23850642
Not really expected behaviour, but we must get him back for this somehow.

Maybe its his attitude or maybe that you used Char's image for him, but I distrust him and we should keep him under close watch.

And remember, now he's OUR responsibility. If he does something stupid, we're the ones who get the blame.

We should also comment on her particular efforts to come and seek us out as well as her poor choice in company.
>>
>>23850736
We shall explain to Ms. Kenaway that we had found a leak in the liquid oxygen tank which necessitated the canceling of the launch. We have since corrected the problem and believe that this launch will be more successful.

Or push it overboard if they feel it's blocking the decks. We'll have to leave our petty revenges at that for now though. Harker may be a bipolar lunatic but he could be quite helpful to us. Let us invite them back to our quarters to get cleaned up and then have a dinner where they can explain themselves in greater detail.

Possibly for you, or any member of the royal family outranking you. Also in theory Parliament could stage a coup, but that's unlikely.
Even without your pardon, he's very popular and would be hard to convict.
>>23850817
The Captain gladly orders the comet pushed overboard, but not before Ms Kenaway recovers her luggage.
None of the crew seem to want Sir Harker's autograph, his current stunt seems to have inflamed the rivalry between the Air Force and Naval Aviation corps.
>>
>>23850868

>>
>>23850895

The technology used in jets is radically different. Might have been interesting to keep a few bits to possibly sell to a collector, but it would be unbecoming of us and besides the crew tasked with pushing the air racer off the deck probably already thought of it.

>>23850903

Indeed! It would be useful to keep an eye on Ms Kenaway though -- she's a foreigner, at the end of the day.
>>
>>23850903
The next day you reach the island and the rocket parts are loaded into floats and brought ashore. There they are assembled and fueled on the island as a rudimentary launch site is set up.

One advantage is that you won't have to worry about an explosion, as all the spectators will be watching from an armored warship floating upwind and to the west of the launch site.

Is everything ready?
>>
>>23850926
An excellent point- perhaps we should rescind our offer to allow her to observe the launch? After all, the RRC is Midland's nuclear deterrent force. Allowing a foreigner access to any part of its operations would be A Bad Thing.
>>
>>23850948
If there's time, have all of the bits and bobs of the rocket and platform double-checked, to insure nothing was knocked out of place by choppy seas or whatever.
>>
>>23850948
I suppose we could write a quick note or poem or something and stick it into the satellite part of the rocket. This is, if nothing else goes wrong, going to be our first rocket to successfully get into space. And I'm reasonably confident this one will work.
>>
>>23850948

We must make sure that pictures are taken at every step -- from a little bit afar of course, so that systems details cannot be gleaned.

I hate this game so much.

Rolled 2

Sugestion to space core, 2d6 is probably better than 1d20.
>>
>>23851372
>screams internally
>>
>>23851372
New rule, you don't get to roll for us
>>
>>23851372
...well, shit. Can we still abort? Or, by some miracle, was that not the actual roll?
>>
>>23851389
SECOND.

Great threads, but terrible luck.
>>
You see a bright flash on the island. A few seconds later the sound of the explosion reaches your ears. Oh dear.
>>
>>23851372

Yeah O_O We've tried 4d6-4, 3d8-4 and 2d10.

The 1d20 thing is a leftover from RaceIntoSpace where the computer rolls a fair d100.

What do we do for this game?
>>
>>23851401
At this rate, how long before the princess gives up on space being a possibility?
>>
>>23851394
Nope, that was a Boom, not a fail.

>>23851411
Multiple d6s are good because A) everyone has them, not just gamers, and B) they make a bell curve.
The only problem is your stats are based on a 1-20 range.
>>
>>23851427

I'd like to add that it's my fault. We did a couple of fluffless test games, and this happened a lot in the beginning -- what I did not realize is that the time investment for a launch in the test gme was minutes where here it's days.

How about we decide on a different dice group?
>>
>>23851396
Eh, time for plan B. Sea Launch time! After thoroughly checking everything, of course.
Last-minute pre-launch checks are a standard procedure, right? If not, we shall institute it! Anyway, I'm going to bed. Better luck next time.
>>
>>23851433

So let's say that stats are 4-24 instead of 1-20 and use 4d6?

We did find that just using 2D10 helped.
>>
i am very sorry and hope I did not wreck the quest :( It's generating an awesome story so far, just...
>>
I can't stop laughing.

>Rush out a shoddy rocket with a 50% fail rate
>Throw a decadent party
>Get all the important people from around the world to attend
>Cancel the launch at the last second and make everyone go home
>Decide to go on vacation
>Blow up our only two-stage rocket in front of the entire navy

Rolled 2, 4, 3, 1 + 4 = 14

I do think 4d6-4 works. But of course it is too late.
>>
Rolled 3, 5, 5, 2 = 15

>>23851451

It's generating a pretty cool story, bro.
>>
>>23851449
>>23851466
Nooo, don't feel bad. This stuff has been great thusfar.

We just get too sidetracked with little details instead of actually building rockets.
>>
Rolled 4, 3, 6, 5 = 18

>>23851491

The idea is that the system provides an excuse to write the little details, zo :)

GodMother has done some fantastic worldbuilding.
>>
Okay, so most of us are in bed, so I think I'll call this episode over. But I'll continue to talk mechanics with Spacecore and anybody who's still awake.

Yeah, I hate 1dx type mechanics. At least now we have the fluff justification that the Mk3 is really complicated and thus has lots of failure points. But we are gonna need a less lulzy mechanic soon.

I offer you SCIENCE
>>
I said it in the last thread, but what we need to do is just become a depressed sack of shit and lock ourselves in our room.

Then we can have a Hikikomori Princess Quest.
>>
>>23851491
Our budget is currently to small to just build rockets. Once we get a nicer budget, the rockets will hopefully take care of themselves.

>>23851401
Time to begin a full survey of the wreckage, to look for failure causes

OH NOW WE ROLL HIGH?
>>
>>23851527
4d6-4 is a nice curve and has the same range, but including a negative modifier for each roll looks strange.

Maybe if you hid it somehow? Like make the -4 the nevea-been-done-befo penalty.
>>
Rolled 4, 2, 3, 2 = 11

>>23851590

Or maybe reliability values are 24 to 4 instead of 20 to 1.
>>
I don't fully understand

If the rolls are truly random, then isn't the only benefit to rolling 4d6 that it's a total of 24 instead of 20?
>>
Oh wait, so you're saying you're subtracting 4 from each of the rolls?
>>
Rolled 2, 6, 4, 2 = 14

>>23851667
No, see the bellcurve graph >>23851527

I'm making a better graph, hang on
>>
>>23851667
Rolling a 1 on a 1d20 is a 1 in 20 chance. Rolling a 0 on 4d6-4 is less than 1%, this is because you would have to roll 4 1s in a row on 4d6-4 to get zero.

Hmm, if a 4d6-4 rolls snake eyes, it will give a 0 not a 1. Your chart seems to be slightly off.
>>
Some advice for OP:

It might help if the basics of this system were explicitly stated at the start of these threads. I mean about fails and booms, etc. It might put off new people if they don't know how the system works.
>>
>>23851733
yeah, but the chance of getting snake eyes on 4d6 is 1 in 1296.
>>
Rolled 3, 2, 2, 6 = 13

>>23851733

That skews things a tiny bit towards fail, but it's a really tiny bit and I think it can be lived with.

>>23851741

>>
>>23851716
Seems like it works well, I guess I just can't into maths.
>>
so 4d6, and subtract 4 for anything that hasn't been done before.

Keep the flat 1d20 as an option for Kerbal mode.
>>
>>23851522
I think there are enough of us here to keep going if you're keen OP?

Also all of the failures are consistent with real-life rocketry; tough business to sort out, especially with such a small budget.
>>
>>23851764
>http://emlia.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php?n=WhatGoesUp.Gameplay Right here!
I know, it just might be easier to put a sentence in at the start of threads explaining it for newcomers.
>>
>>23851872
Well this is when I got to bed anyways.

Just warning, I have work tomorrow so no game. SPQ will return Monday night.
>>
>>23851890
Okies, nite nite, thanks!

Rolled 4, 1, 1, 2 = 8

Thank you!
