Haaaa, no.
Pilot rankings in my book:
Wedge
Tycho
Corran, Wes
Hobbie
Luke (he doesn't fly all the time, remember?)
Then, MAYBE Fel.
Now, why is Wedge above two jedi? Well in the book I, Jedi, Corran Horn barely outflew Tycho and that was only because Corran was reading Tycho's mind. And he BARELY outflew the man. And Wedge is BETTER.
Master tactician, reluctant politician, Ultra-Ace pilot, decent intelligence operative (when he bothers).
If Wedge were an RPG character, he'd be a mary sue no doubt.

If we dont take the force into account , these two suck donkey dick.

Corran because hes way overconfident and it should have gotten him killed a hundret times

Luke because he has little formal training
>>
>>23785948
I would argue that he's overconfident because he's a fighter jock. I'm not saying that if the Force weren't there he wouldn't be dead, but there is a reason for the sheer ego of the man.
Though I would argue that Luke can't possibly suck donkey dick as a pilot because he's a Main Character, which means that he'll either receive training from some piloting master or he'll blunder through with sheer luck. Though honestly, Luke's story isn't that of a pilot.
He started out that way, sure, but he's following the path of the wizard-knight.

To be fair, Tycho had a better ship, and Corran was simultaneously trying to stay alive, not kill Tycho and keep his cover. Much harder than just shooting the man. Also, Fel's old wingmate should be on there somewhere.
>>
Bror Jace all the way!
>>
>>23787336
You notice that Tycho tends to outfly everyone when he has a decent ship. That one time on Adumar with the Blade 32s (that's right, right?) he was having a hell of a time because he went from basically a supersonic fighter jet to a biplane.
>keep his cover
Well... kind of. Obviously the whole 'not-shooting-at-people-attacking-you' deal would have given him away, but he didn't do anything else aside from the vision that would have exposed him.

Yeah, I kinda do the same thing. Like how the Republic comic series and the Clone Wars TV show are contradicting each other - I reconcile it in my head by saying "Jedi. Don't gotta explain shit."

Very liberating tool, is Selective Canon.

Being, as I am, a die-hard Mandalorian fan, it fucking has to be.

You like it, that's great. It's great that you found something you like.

More of an All Or Nothing approach.

Probably because we've never really seen him piloting an actual fighter, just the Falcon and similar freighters. It' be like comparing an F-15 pilot to an C-130 pilot.
>>
>>23790247
Ok, you've got a more hardcore approach to it than I have.

I'm pretty forgiving of the franchise as a whole, much like a woman who repeatedly "walks into doors." Some of it's fucktarded, some of it's beyond awesome, a good deal of it of it falls into meh.

But dat potential in the setting. Almost any type of story one could want to tell can be done in the Star Wars universe. Just a shame that the general quality isn't always up to scratch, with the exception of anything by based Ostrander.

Oh yeah, Star Wars has potential, but people abuse it like fuck. And the problem with expanding my small pool of canon is that reading each book/comic/whatever makes them 'real'. You know what I mean?
I've avoided reading the Vong War or any of that stuff except for a few pages which convinced me that it was shit (pro writing tip: if you can't hook a reader within the first three pages, you have failed).
I hear good things about Legacy, but that's still got all the things I dislike about the EU, including the retroactive adoption of desert ropes as Official Jedi Robes TM. You know who else dressed like a Jedi? Owen Lars, and he ain't a Jedi.
Man, I almost didn't read the new Wraith Squadron book and honestly I found it lackluster so I probably was justified in my hesitation.
I know my stance is very hadrcore, but I want to protect my nostalgia at all costs.
>>
>>23790247
>Courtship of Princess Leia

This gives us Tenenniel Djo, and thus Tenel Ka, so I'm okay with this.

>No Callista
Eh, I was really a fan of Callista and felt the writing out of her via 'can only access the Dark Side, must go find a fix' was a writer's mandate for 'no Luke relationships' that was reversed with Mara. Because, honestly, I realllllllly hated Mara up until just prior to the Vong books.

>no Vong
It's different; not perfect, but to me, more interesting than 'Empire resurgence forty-seven: the new superweapon'.
>>
>>23790719
>reading each book/comic/whatever makes them 'real'. You know what I mean?
Right there with you. If it's got the banner at the top, it's official.

>Vong War or any of that stuff except for a few pages which convinced me that it was shit
It was. Far too grimdark, actually read more like 40K than anything.

>Legacy
I've only read the Ostrander comic, ignored the books entirely. It is pretty good, a sprawling space epic that manages multiple characters/factions/fucking everything pretty smoothly. There are elements that will probably irk you - the Imperial Knights spring to mind, but they're not as retarded as you might think, and there was a dreadful crossover with other titles that feels jarring.

> the retroactive adoption of desert ropes as Official Jedi Robes TM
Know what you mean, but never really bothered me. Seen enough redesigns in the EU to convince me that a robe's just a robe in Star Wars.

> I want to protect my nostalgia at all costs.
The next few years will be hell for you. May the force be with you, my friend, because you're going to fucking need it.
>>

Falcon is more of a small corvette than a freighter, with all the modifications that went into it. Is there even a fitting comparison among the airplanes?
>>

>>23790247
>Courtship of Princess Leia totally happened because I loved it
I know. It's so badly written and full of bad cliches and stupid science but I loved it anyway.

But it has to be canon in my head because Wraith Squadron leads into it, and I love all the X-wing books, especially the Wraith ones.
>>
>>23790978
I disagree with the 'Empire Incorperated; providing you with a new superweapon every day' plotline too, but I tried to read a Vong War novel back when it was just starting and it was the first book I started reading that wasn't finished.
That was big for me. And then I heard about Chewbacca dying and the I heard about Anakin dying and then Coruscant falls and this person dies and that planet falls and and and.
The more it went on, the bigger the hurdle it would be to finally get into it. So... for me, the Scarlet Witch said "No more Star Wars" and that's the way it went for... shit seven years?
>>23791017
I hear that Legacy is great, but... the burned hand....
As for the new Star Wars movies... I don't think I'll go see them, even if a miracle occurs and they include the EU. Just like I won't be watching the Hobbit trilogy; I already had my fill and now I'm done.
It happened when I watched Eva and EoE, it happened when I spent a month playing WoW, and it's going to happen with Star Wars.

Might be confusing it with the Legacy of the Force series, which let into Fate of the Jedi and by far was one of the worst story arcs. Some people even consider it worse than the Vong.
>>
>>23791169
Legacy is pretty good; it's got some interesting implications (like the Fel dynasty being descended from Jagged and Jaina), but the Skywalker character is a bit annoying. He's a bounty hunter who uses drugs to deaden his connection to the Force.

Like Prince of the Jedi or some shit?
Little kids novels, they had them in the school library when I was in eighth grade. Some shit about a secret robot city underground with only one living inhabitant: a Force-sensitive child.
The one book plot I remember:
>person pretending to be son of the Emperor, had three eyes, went on hunt for glove of Darth Vader, had implants so he could shoot lightning
>>23791225
Yoda is basically wearing a burlap sack and Anakin was best bros with Obi-Wan.
Also, they were probably from the same planet. Who has blond hair and blue eyes? Anakin, Luke, and.... Beru.

>>23791169

Yeah, had that thoughout life with various franchises. But after a while, I crave something of the familiar, which invariably leads me back to Star Wars.
Which is why the notion that the EU I've spent 15 years reading about could well be summarily discarded by these new flicks is...it's painful, man.

I still haven't read Dark Empire. I don't think I want to, because the basic plot seems to be that Luke decided to pall around with a clone of the Emperor (reincarnated, whatever) to 'curb his impulses' and he became Darth Vader Lite complete with DARKSUIT.

Superweapons, superweapons everywhere, the Dark Side is basically Chaos power (again with the 40K, I know, but it's an accurate comparison) - a corrupting power source that could turn meek dickheads into KILLMAIMDESTROY warriors with one blast of Palpy's force lightning and power machinery. It's like how the Vong are supposed to be undetectable in the Force when we are TOLD that LIFE creates the Force and if they don't show up then that raises some very strange questions.
>>
>>23791816
>But the whole "intrinsically better than Jedi
That…that doesn't even make any sense. A Jedi is just about any alien who, on top of his natural abilities, has actual magic and follows a specfic philosophy. Does being a Mandalorian allow you to generate a field that makes Jedi suck or something?
That isn't to say that I don't think Jedi should never be beaten by non-Jedi, just that you have to work for it.

Was going to show what I meant by the Bobo thing with a 2-part storytime set during the Clone Wars that I found pretty funny, but DC++ is being a slow bitch tonight and the first part's not downloaded yet.

Should probably ask at this point: anyone up for a storytime, or would you rather I leave it?

much closer, similar firepower baring the xwing torps, although anybody in a interceptor who lets a guy get a torp lock on him deserves it.

xwings are more durable, interceptors faster and more agile so dodge better. could go either way depending on pilot skill, and pilots are damn near equal, that said xwings do probably win in the long run because their edge in durability is greater than the interceptors edge in agility

>It's like how the Vong are supposed to be undetectable in the Force when we are TOLD that LIFE creates the Force and if they don't show up then that raises some very strange questions

They actually answered this in one of the Vong books. The YVH's homeworld (a living, sentient force-sensetive planet) thought they were warmongering cunts, so it severed their souls/essences/whatever from the Force.

The Vong blew it up in response.

I -think- so, but I'm not sure. The War ends when the seedling the planet spat out before its death finds the Vong and forgives them, returning them to the Force.

Technically they were. They waged war against sentient droids (the Selenium and something else, the Great Heep is one of them), razing many planets in their galaxy. Then, they went on a 'let's kill and conquer everything'.
>>
>>23793088
I don't recall them regaining their Force connection, just giving up their galaxy-conquering. Them not being Force-sensitive is a plot point in Legacy, still.
>>
>>23793088
That part actually wasn't so bad. I mean it was Zenoma Sekot, so it was pretty established.

And the real end of the war was Jacen killing Onimi, which -was- pretty bad.

>I don't recall them regaining their Force connection, just giving up their galaxy-conquering. Them not being Force-sensitive is a plot point in Legacy, still.

Oh, well fuck, sorry. Never read Legacy and the other EU stuff fucking never touches on them again.

Need to go pick that up I guess.
>>
>>23793146
No big, man. I just wondered if I missed that or was just mis-remembering. The Vong are pretty much the galaxy's bitches in Legacy; they reformed, and at the behest of a Skywalker and the Jedi they try to un-Vongform the worlds they fucked up, as well as agriculture stuff with shaping. It works for a while. And then it backfires and turns into more Vongforming, which makes it look like they're trying to take over again. Sith sabotage with a CRAAAAAZY Master Shaper is fun stuff.

I remember those, and still have them somewhere. They were unbelievably shitty.

Every other book (there were six) was some sort of environmental message. There was one about why the empire shouldn't hunt sentient force whales on mon calamari. There was one (the one with the kid in the robot city, or the one after dealing with the same plot) where trioculus was burning the entire forest planet down looking for the kid.

There was Jabba's grandfather zorbo, who had a beard (which looking back, is better than Jabba's gay purple cousin from the shitty CG show) and the writers (a husband/ wide team) tried to marry Leia and Han until they got a cease and decist from actual competent writers.

There was also a secret council of imperial wizards who judged trioculus' birthright, which he cheated by using sonic implants in his fingers to knock people out or something like that.

And it was NOT the series with the bunny Jedi master, that had to do with Luke skywalker's kids being trained as Jedi. The only book I remember from that series was one with sentient spider monsters and had a giant black snake on the cover.

Speaking of shitty Star Wars series, does anyone remember galaxy of fear? It was a horror series set in the Star Wars universe. The book I read was about an evil mynock that are people on an ithorian herdship or something like that.

Stackpole and whoever wrote Shadows had a very similar idea if Stackpole didn't directly draw on what was in Shadows.
"The best lightsabers have three crystals to create a fully customizable blade."
That's from Obi-Wan's book-o-Force-learnin' that was in his house on Tatooine.
Speaking of the book, it never shows up again. You'd think with an artifact like that (an actual fucking BOOK with PAPER), Luke wouldn't need to go Indiana Jones artifact hunting.
>>
>>23793441
I'm still not reading it. I'm not saying I think it's bad, it's just not seeming to be my thing based on the glimpses I get from word of mouth and individual pages.
>>
>>23793825
>How do you cut off someone ELSE'S Force connection? Even if it IS a planet, the Force is literally everywhere and so you'd get it even if the planet decided to unhook the phoneline so to speak.

The planet is retardedly force strong. I mean even the seedling, Zenoma Sekot, is insanely strong in the Force.

Certain events of great significance and power can sever the force.
>>
>>23793727
Which were all Han and Leia's kids.
Luke has Ben, unless you derped and were saying Skywalker family youngin's.
>>
>>23793889
>Stackpole didn't directly draw on what was in Shadows.
It's fair to say he did, considering the first half of I, Jedi could safely be described as self-insert fanfic of the Jedi Academy books.
>>
>>23793825
Also, a planet from another galaxy. The rules may not apply there. Plus, there's examples of Force stripping as a punishment in some EU, IIRC. It's not outside the realm of possibility.
>>
>>23793841
Never played KOTOR and don't really care to.
I don't really care how good it is, I don't feel like playing it.
>>
>>23793945
Most people would say 'fix-fic', but details details.
I actually kind of liked the Academy stuff because it gives Luke the dressing down he needed after all the retardedness in the actual Academy trilogy.
>>
>>23793841
Actually, that trick (Force Sever) predates KotOR by almost a decade. It was first mentioned as possible in Tales of the Jedi: The Sith War 1: Edge of the Whirlwind, and first used 4 issues later by Nomi Sunrider, to sever Ulic Qel-Droma's connection to the Force. And as used there it basically just makes a Force-sensitive individual no longer Force-sensitive, so it's not the same bullshit as the "explanation" for the Vong.
>>
>>23793841
Actually, it's pointed out that Jedi Exile didn't have her force cut, she cut herself off in the face of the backlash and became a living wound, which was a problem cus she was also really good at Force Bonds.

Basically, she became a force black hole.
>>
>>23794017
It is sort of implied in one the role-playing books that it has nothing to do with actually severing their force and more to do with making them think you have, like the supreme mind trick. Given there are guys that can trick you into believing you are on fire and you'll believe it, not entirely surprising.
>>
>>23793956
The sheer amount of stubborn "nope, not reading/watching/playing that" ITT is beginning to seem unreal.

Do what I do, mate - recognise that while the stuff you enjoyed as a youth was great, the franchise has moved on. But the best part? It's moved in all kinds of different directions, as previously demonstrated with Dark Empire and Villie's story. There are different types of stories for different fans, it's just a matter of identifying which sounds like it might be your bag.

Despite the whole thing about "read it, now it's real", it's good to try new stuff, because a different sense of perspective will help you realise that the new stuff (new movies aside) doesn't invalidate all of your favourites. They're still there, Zinsj, the Hapans and the rest. They just exist as part of a larger whole in that galaxy far, far away, and there's plenty left to discover and enjoy. The franchise always left me with a feeling of wanderlust, of wanting to experience the joy of exploration, sure in the knowledge that there would always be more to discover and appreciate on its own merits.
Say you discover something unpalatable, for whatever reason? Don't worry about it, they're only stories. At the end of the day, it's your experience, no-one can tell you how to enjoy it or what exactly did and didn't happen; I just think you could stand to branch out a little more and see what new wonders await you. And as eople sometimes forget, instilling a sense of wonder is what Star Wars should be all about.

>HIGH ADVENTURE
Gonna say it again - anything John Ostrander writes. Republic (now forever known as The Adventures of Villie and his Amazing Jedi Friends) and Legacy are all one huge story spanning 100+ years with fantastic art, great characters and new concepts that IN NO WAY invalidate anything that came before it. He's recently done the second arc of Agent of the Empire - straight-up James Bond-type Imperial Intel officer during the rise of the Empire. Get the to Google and see what else he's done.

Also:
Knights of the Old Republic, 40+ issues of some of the funniest and best SW adventures you'll ever read, requiring very little knowledge of the games. Which are also awesome.

Darth Vader and the Ghost Prison/Darth Vader and the Lost Command - two 5-issue minis chock full of feels. Again, all done with respect to the source material.

And quite a few more...

There are a few to avoid like the fucking plague - Dark Empire and Crimson Empire (no relation) come to mind, but hey - that's exploration for ya :)

Yes...yes you do. Fair warning: it starts a little slow, there'll be one character concept at the start you may find offensive to the sensibilities a Tusken Jedi, but once Ostrander warms up the run he swiftly and painlessly retcons out the offensive - then the awesome truly begins and doesn't let up for an ungodly number of issues.

Any of you who haven't read Aaron Allstons's X-Wing books (the ones about Wraith Squadron) really need to go do so, it's some of the most entertaining star wars EU stuff out there.

Long story short is Wedge Antilles takes a break from running Rogue Squadron to make a X-wing pilot / commando squad out of a bunch of screwups and weirdos. They fly around and pretend to be pirates and blow stuff up and it's hilarious and awesome.

Seriously, Allston's books are the funniest Star Wars books by far, while still having some fantastic character development and some really good serious moments.

If you need more convincing, this is the book series that includes Wedge Antilles having to impersonate a homicidal Ewok pilot.
>>
>>23795253
Well, no need to ship them, they are an official couple. They even have adorable little daughter Alana (being raised as Amelia Solo), though I wonder if her 'Light Side Queen' vision will ever come to pass in the novels.

I loved the part with two intellectual stormtroopers playing strategic wargame in their minds.

I'm still mad.
I am still SO mad. I know that I, Jedi is maligned around here, but when Corran did his Vision of the Rock, Luke saw through it almost immediately.
Hard to believe that he wouldn't have taught his wife that.

And they DIDN'T die! Shit was SO cash.

Hey guys, hate to burst in here, but is the Han Solo Trilogy any good?
http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Han_Solo_Trilogy
I'm considering grabbing them, but as a fan of the old Han Solo Adventures books, I don't wanna get burned.
>>
>>23795410
Oh no, Wraith Squadron would have already been in the middle of it pretending to help.
Then the Task Force of Family shows up there's just Face, Kel, Piggy, and the gang sitting with the kids going "What took you so long?"

>Bunch of teens wade through living nightmare for whole book, and then one of the MC dies, leaving everyone mentally scarred. Including the reader
Well no shit.
>>
>>23795519
I think I read them in high school and remember them being 'entertaining' but not super-great.
>>
>>23795519
>Han Solo Adventures
So THAT'S what they were called!
Thanks Anon, been trying to remember forever.
As for the Trilogy... eh, they're decent.
>>
>>23795519

I liked them. What are the old Han Solo Adventure books? I know they specifically worked in spaces in the HS Trilogy for the REALLY old Star Wars Han Solo books (that came out back when the movies first came out?) to fit in. That what you're referring to?
>>
>>23795462
Reading that part I chuckled almost as hard as Wedge in the book.
>>
Is it terrible that I'd love to have novelizations of Star Wars: Droids-style '18 years leading up to Ep IV' shenanigans?
>>

The ones where Han's off in the Corporate Sector essentially doing Shadowrun in Star Wars.

Mediocre.
Nowhere near Zahn, Stackpole or Allison level, but also not too bad.
And Han gets a girl in every book.
>>
>>23795299
But, they're living beings. If the Force is a thing, then all living things are faintly force-sensitive. I'm being obstructively literal here, but that means that normal human functioning incorporates force shit. Creatures in some region that's somehow force-dead would...have shittier reaction times, be easier to sneak up on, and feel less emotionally connected to other people.

To turn this even more /tg/ for a moment, Aaron Allston actually wrote a bunch of 2nd Edition D&D supplements back in the day, and a bunch of stuff for a pile other RPGs in the 80s/90s (GURPS, Champions, Paranoia...)

Ah, wait.
I was reffering to this books:
>>23795576

Han Solo trilogy was quite good.
>>
>>23795594
>Han gets a girl in every book.
You expected otherwise? It's Han "Deep-Fried-In-Vag-Butter" Solo, for Vader's sake.
>>
>>23795613
>Autoduel Champions
That sounds hardcore.
>>
>>23795519
I also googled up Han Solo Adventures.
Someone's making an adventure game in the style of Fate of Atlantis for Han Solo. But there's bad news:
>Site hasn't updated since summer of last year
>Itmustberaining.jpg

>>23795613
That only cements the reason as to why Wraith Squadron acts like a bunch of PCs.

That's the one that's basically an entire book of ninja jokes as rules, right? I love that book.

Damn.
>>
>>23795721
Judging by Wraith Squadron, that is 100% his style

I forgot to say this earlier; but thank you.
I mean that, I really do. I might have found this stuff eventually but you helped me now and that matters.
>>
>>23795358
And since you can't see out your damn helmets, you get people sneaking around your bases all the time. And that's when you get fooled by a Wookie in an AT-ST.
>>
>>23795808
More than welcome, anon.
>>
Goodnight, thread.
>>
>>23795171
The Rebellion had been around for nearly a year and they had the Mon Calamari Shipyard already backing them. I think it's safe to assume that the forces on Yavin were a small contingent of the total rebel forces. You can't tell me that the rebel fleet consisted of only 30 x/y wings.
>>
So I know that most Star Wars fans hate TFU but I have to admit, both of the books were fantastic reads.
