Harry Potter + SCIENCE!

These fanfictions are defined by how someone took the original setting, and made it amazing. They also break enough conventions to let you consider greater things in your campaigns.

The question I posit to you, /tg/. Is where can we find more of these. (I only know these 3 and I'll be very sad if that's all there is)

I... Would hesitate to call Methods of Rationality 'good,' much less amazing. Yudkowski gets much more credit than he deserves as a writer, for reasons I cannot fathom.

The concept is cool, the implementation is lacking. It suffers from Science Fiction Diatribe syndrome, and it is... Agonizing, let us say, if you put stock in good writing.

You could investigate Redemption War, I suppose, but it suffers from similar stilted dialogue I suppose theoretically it's fanfiction of... Revelations?. The only time I have ever read fanfiction that genuinely impressed me was a Dies the Fire one set in Bosnia, not because it was particularly imaginative or because I liked the universe, but because it felt much more like what the original story should've been. There is a sense in a lot of these stories that the author is wink-winking nudge-nudging too much, or showing off knowledge of subjects too much to detriment of the narrative. Fanfiction, really just fiction in general, is not exempt from the laws of narrative causality, people must still talk as people talk, and act as people are wont to act. There is nothing more boring than an author using someone else's work as a platform to espouse his own tedious views on X Y and Z. It's sloppy and depressing.
>>
>>23719390
Yeah I have to agree with the diatribes.
Also it seems like Yudkowski is going in the direction of saying ghosts aren't sapient, just because professor Binns is incredibly boring (even though I'm pretty sure it's been said that he was the same when he was alive).
That's kind of annoying, because he's avoiding the ramifications of dealing with a world where the afterlife is a thing that exists, just because it goes against his personal philosophy.
It strikes me as intellectually lazy.

Binns' shtick was that he died midway through a class and just kept going, if I remember. I thought that was an incredibly badass premise for a character, actually.

Can you imagine a spectral Ben Stien just talking nonstop for eternity about historical minutia? You just come into the room with him when it's time for class, and then leave afterwards, but he never stops. That is fucking hilarious. How could you see that, and not want to have fun with it?

Redemption War is HFY whipped up to inane heights and completely disregards its own canon to make humans even more awesome compared to everything non-human.
>>
>>23719505
If I recall correctly, didn't he die in his sleep when he was on break, and his ghost sat up out of his body, and just went straight to the class he was scheduled to teach?
In any case, when you put it like that, I have to concede that Binns rocks.

Methods of Rationality is terrible. See >>23719390 for the bones of why, along with generally bad storytelling.

Redemption War is brainless stupidity. It pastes the concept of Heaven and Hell onto idiocy and uses it to wank off humanity. It doesn't jive with Christianity at all. Absolutely terrible.

>>23719177
This isn't bad. I don't like the author's storytelling and world building (fundamentally disagree with the author's style and how he tends to see things), but it has solid storytelling all around and has a lot of -good- work put into it.

>>
>>23719469
I do think that the man comes off as unusually preachy at times, which hampers his capabilities. Somehow it almost feels like he's writing at you, rather than for you, and that always makes me uncomfortable.

Redemption War was very definitely written for people, but then, that isn't necessarily a good thing. It's pandering. And Don't get me wrong, I like HFY as much as the next guy, but this is just painful to read. I'm not the sort of queer who uses the word 'wank' to describe things I don't like, but I am a hair's breadth to breaking my own rule when it comes to Redemption War. It's masturbatory, almost in a literal sense, where the entire purpose is to tenderly massage the author's sensibilities, to coax the reader into a hearty, Militaristic erection, complete with cameo appearances by celebrities and not so subtle jabs at everyone's least favorite politicians and TV show hosts. It's just... So plebeian. Bread and circuses stuff in lieu of a coherent story. Why do people do this to otherwise interesting ideas?

WHITE CHRIST.
Oh my God, I was wondering why the TV tropes article wasn't coming up. What the hell is a Redemption War, and why is everyone calling it that?
>>
>>23719674
Hill of Swords is somewhat controversial in the fandom. It pulls some bullshit and has some considerable flaws to it, along with Gabriel Blessing's typical issues.

It's tied on rails to the canon despite the fact that Shiro should have derailed it, it's less Shiro and some sort of psychopathic EMIYA variant, the entire dumb harem premise is predicated against Shiro waiting for Saber so there's zero payoff to it, it uses some really dumb faux-profanity and has a few other glaring problems.

Oh, and it inspired a lot of terrible writers to write derivative fanfics based on it or inspired by it. I don't hold that last part against it, but goodness. If you ever see a fic about the 'Emiya Clan', run far and run fast.
>>
>>23719706
I have an excuse, I'm listening to Redemption Song. Everyone else probably read my post and started doing it subconsciously. Sorry guys. My bad.

>>23719686
One thing that kind of annoys me is the way Harry references popular science fiction novels, and even Warhammer 40K.
It just comes off as pandering to me.
...Though I did kind of like the shield breaking hex.
>>
>>23719735

I was following it while he was still working on it so i already know about most of it's flaws and it's followers fuck ups. But yes we have a shirou that is on his way to becoming EMIYA. Considering he comes from an alternate route with stuff from both fate and UBW it isn't that unbelievable.

Compared to what ZnT actually like, the story is seriously enjoyable.

And the emiya clan started off because of his other story called In Flight. Has nothing to do with HoS afaik.
>>
>>23719390
Yeah, I have to agree. I read his Babyeaters thing and it was really great till like chapter 3, writing okay ideas great, but then it went rapidly fucking downhill.
>>
>>23719835
Considering it has to use a variant route to retrospectively explain how it's possible? Yeah, I call bullshit on that.

I still put HoS as about a 6 or 7/10, just that it has flaws big enough to drive a truck through. It gets a bit of leeway since it was also the first big ZnT fic.

Not gonna touch In Flight's giant gaping asshole of a disaster.

I like In Flight, and most of GB's work. Dunno why everyone hates it. I will say that he goes into too much detail with his fights though, we don't need an exact description of every muscle movement.

Now Naruto is generally considered the bane of existence around here I'm sure, but there was this really good fic I found where some bitch tried to get the demon out of his head, and accidentally crushed his mind, turning him severely autistic. The story goes on with Naruto having a totally flat affect, unconnected with people, and so on. I love psych stuff, so finding that the author actually knows how autism works was really nifty for me.

Of course, I can't remember the goddamn name.

Eh, I'd say they are all different interpretations and ways of approaching the material rather than better per se.

Then again, I'd say the same thing about almost every other piece of similar fan fiction in the thread.

The formats are too different, the writing schedules are too different, etc. that you can easily get something that's superior or inferior to the original, but at that point the comparison is meaningless.

Game Theory by Immatrael or however you spell it.

Basically Magical Lyrical Nanoha, except Precia isn't a total bitch to Fate. Nanoha ends up working with Fate and they fight against the TSAB. It's completed, and the sequel is planned after his Sailor Moon fic is done.

He often collabs with EarthScorpion, and they both put out quality work.

I read it just before it started being too bad. I still think the prologue is great worldbuilding. So I agree, but I think it's the most /tg/ related fanfiction ever.

I'd also like to recommend everything by The Ero-Sennin/Sage of Toads. I don't do giant robo or Ranma or Sailor Moon and I still think his stuff is great. Probably because he's got a great ability to do ridiculously over the top fight scenes. http://www.fanfiction.net/u/1854667/The-Sage-of-Toads

He's done one-shots for my fanfiction contest that I liked, so I'm biased. Cool guy though.

Oh, right, I also pastebin'd the original ARSENAL http://pastebin.com/zWhUg6Lv The new one's pretty much better in every way, but the old one is longer and shows the heights the new one is going to surpass.

It's a Mass Effect one, but I don't think I've read anything quite like it. It's told as a first person noir sci-fi story, by an asari PI on Illium, and it... feels noir-y, if you know what I mean. It's a totally biased in-universe thing. And there's the saliarian mob and the turian mafia.

Plus, the narrator is a total bitch, but is pretty fucking hilarious about it. And is rather racist about anything which isn't an asari.

It's a ZnT/Exalted crossover, except Louise fails her summon. This causes her to be Exalted as a Green Sun Prince. Most of the recommendation comes from the quality of the writing - EarthScorpion is notoriously good - and the avoidance of the usual dull ZnT fanfic tropes.

If you're not familiar with Exalted... basically, it's an RPG setting - a high-powered cynical fantasy, where you play mortals given tremendous power by the Great Gods (or other entities) to work your will on the world.

When I say "high-powered" I mean "your PCs can punch out gods, while peasant mortals die of infections from minor cuts (there are rules for this)". And when I say "cynical" I mean "your PCs have the power to run roughshod over most of the setting, and you are encouraged to work out the horrible consequences for doing so".

Green Sun Princes are the Chosen of Hell - which, since Exalted mostly shuns Christian/Tolkeinesque fantasy and completely shuns traditional fantasy moralizing, is less a place of eternal torment and more an extradimensional prison colony for prehuman alien intelligences. Their Exalted aren't superhumans so much as they are transhumans - they change. Permanently, and in unsettling ways.

He took an idea, that somethign should be done about Snape early on, and fucked it to hell.

Then the Quirrel "Learn to lose"....shit...I quit reading right fucking there.

So I looked at the start of Aeon Entelechy Evangelion. It's kind of... dense. Like, I mean, I know the normal Eva start is going on, but I don't really /get/ what's going on, if you know what I mean. Is it worth putting my time into, because it's pretty long and doesn't seem to be complete?

Seconding this rec. Game Theory cuts out a lot of the shitty loli magical girl stuff and turns Nanoha into sci-fi which just happens to have girls who have magic as the main characters.

Plus, Mei, one of the OC TSAB mooks? Is totally fucking GAR and has more balls than most male characters ever. She'll fucking throw herself off a building to try to stab Fate even when she can't fly herself.
>>
>>23723274
Nah, it's not so much of a problem. Think less "Jehovah" and more "spirit". Sure, at the higher end of power, Gods can toss around power like Zeus, but even in Greek myth Zeus could be tricked, or frightened, or beaten. Most gods are on the level of, say, dryads or nymphs. Exalts are like Menelaus, who wrestled Proteus into submission, or Diomedes, who kicks the shit out of Apollo in the Trojan War. Or, uh, Jacob, who wrestled with God.

So when a river god starts threatening to flood a village if they don't send him more booze and dancing girls, a fighty Exalt can wade in and break his nose. Basic mortal warriors turn into a fine red paste if they get in a fight with an Exalt. There are still things that can threaten even a fighty Exalt - in Halkegina, that'd include stuff like dragons, powerful mages, elves, spirits, lesser mages and/or skilled warriors in numbers, etc.

Just read the Saotome Gambit. If you read none of my other suggestions read that fucking thing. It is easily on par if not better than most ACTUAL Battletech novels, mostly because unlike them the writer here has actually got years in the armed services under his belt.

He's also the guy who wrote "Ranma goes to War" which is also another good one, but not really a crossover so I didn't include it.
>>
Harry Potter and the methods of rationality would have been fun if the writer didn't make every wizard a fucking retard and turn Harry into an insufferable cunt of a mary sue.

It would have been nice if it was literally just applying philosophy and logic to a world that sorely needed it, instead of the dumb shit that actually happens.
>>
>>23723274
It's not much of a problem. Main characters always win or survive /anyway/. Codifying it in-universe doesn't change much.

What's more interesting is giving Louise (who really is fucked in the head) really powerful magic and then actually /letting/ her fuck up when she uses it. The author clearly has no interest in throwing her a bone, and the plot's gone pretty far off the rails by this point - there never was a Guiche-duel, she never caught Fouquet, she's married whatshisface the evil fiance, and she's currently fighting a guerilla war against Cromwell in Albion after Henrietta's Prince boyfriend was executed.

Plus, she has a form of magic no-one recognizes that is changing her in fundamental and scary ways. She's half-convinced she's going insane. It's extremely entertaining.

Anyone fans of the two Shocker series?
Shocker: Legit http://forgotten.faithweb.com/MaxLandis/legit00.htm

Shocker: Legit is very good for a long time but in the end it derails into a massive wankfest.

I like the Shocker, but he does not need to get a complimentary blowjob by the author.

Polarity is better at avoiding the wank, although the follow up is starting to inch towards it.
>>
>>23723477
I would have recced it maybe a year ago.

But these days it's absolutely fucking massive, a leviathan of a fic, and what's /actually/ happened?

Rin: I R MISUNDERSTOOD NOM NOM
complications ensue
Everyone: U R EVIL KILL KILL
complications ensue
Reisen: SHE NOT REALLY EVIL, HONEST
complications ensue
Reimu: FINE I HELP
complications ensue
Everyone: FINE WE HELP
complications ensue
Yuuka: LOL I BREAK 4TH WALL SO RANDUM

That's it. I think it's longer than Lord of the Rings, at this point, and while on a scene-by-scene level the writing is entertaining enough, /nothing has fucking happened/.
>>
>>23723372
I liked reading it also.
I mean, it has its flaws, and it certainly isn't literature - but it's entertaining enough, and avoids lots of pitfalls common to fanfiction.
I don't understand the hate, either. If someone is willing, I'd love to have explained to me, in detail, why it's not enjoyable.
>>
Not many people talking about To the Stars. Amazing IMO. I read it first then went back and watched meguca for reference.
>>
>>23723274
1. The fic actually takes the details of a mageocracy modeled on 17th century Europe seriously. Unlike ZnT. It's some very entertaining worldbuilding. He even works in some Anglish for fun.
2. Louise is actually taking a step down in power, all told. Void mages can blow shit up good and have a very powerful familiar. Infernal exalts tend to be physically tougher, but besides that... What makes it interesting is that nobody in-universe knows how to pigeonhole her.

Well... I really like Methods of Rationality.

It's not perfect. Actually, it's got some parts that are kind of terrible (learn to lose, some early chapters, "lol raepy Malfoy"). But I love it anyway. It's got a lot of hedons per chapter for me.
I guess it helps that Yudkowsky's preaching to the choir with me on most of his issues. No reason a person can't enjoy agreeing with fiction every once in a while though.

Okay, so I read the first few chapters of AGSITV. So Louise has a... purple lady thing that can turn into a man called a neomah living in her head and it's her familiar or... I'm just confused. Am I missing something? Is that normal for an Exalted? And does Marisalon get less annoying later or what?

I get the feeling I'm being disapproved of.
Listen, if you build a world in which putting tab A into slot B produces this predictable, powerful effect, you should expect it to be treated like any other aspect of the world, and have it be realistically eventually figured out and exploited. I mean, if a player came up and suddenly asked for his character to start making them, I'd first have to ask them to research the making of thin tubes in the middle ages, and where his character might have learned of the hole+holding effect, and who he plans on hiring for the construction of the crossbow, and where he's going to buy miniaturized portable holes, and where he's going to buy tiny bags and where he's going to find a sufficiently skilled wizard to enchant them, etc. Not to mention how he's going to get funding for this. All of these things are potentially small quests.
Just because the effect is exploitable doesn't mean it's game breaking. Thinking through the consequences of the development (assassins suddenly have a new favorite weapon), and asking why nobody had done it before (it's not like NOBODY would have figured it out) are perfectly reasonable things to think about. There's no reason to say "no" to this idea, besides your wanting to have a different kind of fun.

Overlady http://www.fanfiction.net/s/8753582/1/Overlady

It's actually genuinely hilarious. It's a ZnT/Overlord cross which actually reads like Overlord plays (ie, it's a comedy) rather than the shitty power trip which most Overlord fics turns into. Louise fails to summon anything and instead gets pulled by her magic to a ruined tower and ends up meeting Gnarl, who is currently locked up in a cage there (by a melodramatic vampire).

This is a fic which actually has a half-incubus female character. Yes, half-incubus. Yes, that means that when she doesn't pay attention and keep it under control, the narrative starts describing her in masculine ways. It's hilarious all around.

It's Salvation War, but anyways the idea behind it is that it started out with the Bible and Dante's Divine Comedy being 100% true and descriptive when it described hell. That being said, things that seemed really impressive back then don't seem as impressive as now. In addition, the author himself stated that basically until the Cold War, the sheer size and strength of the army that attacked would have won.
>>
>>23722873

Seconding this. It hasn't got updated much, since ES has, like, 3 other novel length fics going too and is also serving as a co-author/sounding board on several other fics (he helped with a lot of the worldbuilding for Game Theory), but what is up is awesome.

The Infernal Exaltation process goes something like this:

1. Human has a chance to be super-special-awesome!
2. They fuck it up completely, either by wimping out or just not being good enough.
3. A demon shows up, tells you it's not your fault, you can still fix everything, and offers you power.
3.1: If you say yes, the demon turns into a cocoon, you spend five days inside it, and when you emerge, you're an Infernal Exalt with the demon now living inside your head.
3.2 If you say no, the demon either shrugs and walks off to find someone else (if it's one of the nicer ones) or murders you then walks off to find someone else.

>Yudkowski

First I heard of him was on TV Tropes, where I discovered he has unironically declared himself to be a "hero", partly because of his work with cyrogenics. This led me to LessWrong, which...wow. Just fucking wow. The guy heads up an honest-to-Lucifer cult of personality.

I'm not by any means a clever man or a trained critical thinker, so I can't comment on his theories about...well, much of anything, really. Thing is, that doesn't preclude me from perceiving him as a self-important, pedantic know-it-all whom I hope was bullied horrendously at school. He's intimidatingly smart (MoR was frighteningly dense in places), but he just seems to be an insufferably smug man. I would kind of like to understand what the hell he goes on about, but his approach to writing just leaves me cold.
>>
>>23724328

I enjoyed People Lie, by Nugar.

Basic idea was "What if Naruto had a father figure in his life, and it made him turn out worse than canon?"

On one hand, the resulting character is almost completely OC (he only acts like original!Naruto when something really good and exciting happens, he tends towards creative cruelty, etc.), and this results in his friends also becoming OCs (sasuke contracts with Kyuubi for power and becomes less of a dick, Hinata does the same thing and winds up as Naruto's murderous/yandere High Priestess). Also, levecraftian elements (A shoggoth, which is written as something horrible, deadly and wrong, not just a blob monster) show up out of nowhere.

I still liked it, though.

I'm a bit biased, knowing Shyft decently and all, and can say it won't always be that way. The point he was making is that Evangelion physics aren't Creation physics in that way. And that was the point as well, Shinji changes and the story does, not everything just goes off kilter.

>>23723361
I'd say that it's worth a shot at least. The first chapter can be kinda overwhelming since it just drops you into this shit head first, but it all starts to "click" as you go on. Read the first couple chapters and if it hasn't grabbed you, feel free to drop it.
>>
>>23726533
There's the SasuNaru slash with a premise kinda like that, is that the one you're thinking of?

The one where Naruto starts in a mental hospital?
>>
>>23723361
>>23726566
Yeah it does try to beat your mind into a bloody pulp at the beginning there. It gets a little better after that, though it never gets, y'know, easy. You'll spend pretty much the entire time you read it trying to figure out what the fuck is actually happening.
I like that. Quite a bit, actually.

>>
>>23726764

Less comedic than Nobody Dies, but better characterization (especially better than late-series Nobody Dies, which just got kinda stupid).
>>
>>23726596
No, no relationships at all.

Naruto actually starts making friends with the demon, and lets him out a few times.

Man, I wish I could remember the name, or at least how I found it. Googling "naruto autism" is not helpful at all.

Very little comedy. ND is basically a crackfic in comparison. I actually dropped ND after THIRTY GODDAMN CHAPTERS worth of character development was effectively retconned for everyone but Shinji.
Characters are good, though so far there hasn't been a lot of development. The last Angel fight was the giant fish one, which is Asuka's first fight, though not her first appearance. Rei is pretty neat, she actually has a reason for being a complete social outcast aside from 'Gendo did it'.

He Had No Fingers and the authors other works are much better.
Throwing in Shoggoth doesn't really make it Lovecraftian, it just means you've name-dropped a random Cthulu-mythos monster. It's the style of writing that defines the genre
>>
>>23727246
I know.
Still badass though.
And besides, the retcon doesn't matter anymore, he's starting over completely, in order to get out from under the sheer weight of random shit that had built up, and appears to have the story actually planned out instead of it just being an idea dumping ground, which is what ND started as.

>>
>>23727300

And in People Lie, the shoggoth and the cult that summoned it actually are full lovecraft. It's not portrayed as a blob monster named "Shoggoth-kun" or anything. It's something so alien that Hinata's eyes refuse to allow her to see it. The kids have no chance against it, and it ignores their bullshit ninja powers (you can clone yourself and have healing powers? I stab you, all your clones feel it, and you now have a sucking gut wound that won't heal). The cult leader has some kind of horrible shoggoth-like graft for an arm, and at one point slowly eats a sympathetic character with it.

The whole "horrible monster we can't understand or even look at, and all are weapons are useless against it" thing, along with the writing style in that bit, seems mighty lovecraftian to me.
>>
I vaguely remember a BSG/Battletech crossover where the Colonials try and manhandle the Star League into submitting to their authority and then start shit with the SLDF. I really remember Basestars getting broken into by a bunch of mechs with Aleksandr Kerensky at the forefront. Anyone else remember this?
>>
>>23727577

Okay, TBH, a lot of the stuff that got retconned were the things that, while fun at the time, were kinda LOLSORANDUMB XD. I was unhappy at the retcon, but by the time it had happened, the other stuff had already led to me losing a lot of my investment in the story.

To each their own. I completely accept the diatribe now and then. The story is after all, supposed to mix fanfictions and lessons in advanced rational thinking and bias busting. I've learnt a few ideas from it that I actually use. So educational too!

I enjoyed the way he played with the universe in an enjoyable munchkin way while still keeping things believable and not OP - HP avoided becoming a Mary Sue. For all him knowing his shit, his enemies are smart and the odds are stacked against him, and he often fucks up because he is a smartarse prick.

I have several friends who thoroughly enjoy HPMOR as well.

I'd personally recommend it. Just be aware there is a few weird bits. It really starts to take off once you hit the sorting hat and onwards. If it reads really smug and odd before that, power through it.

The only problem I have with it (and have told Nugar as much, back when I talked with him) is that he CALLED it a shoggoth, which... lost something, I think. Like, had he used a more lovecraftian sort of prose instead of just SHOGGOTH, it would have been better to me.

Not really, he's just writing other things and playing Exalted.

And that's why it would have been good.

Just imagine the pure, unadulterated HATRED that could have been spawned by that. The slow spiral into white-hot rage, the unimaginable sense of helplessness and undirected fury.

Methods of Rationality is the most entertaining fiction I've read. People saying they don't like it are probably literature-fags who hate all genre fiction because it's low status.

Hi Author Here! Shinji was the only /Exaltation/ to make it through, mostly because it's a common thing to go "Oh, everyone named gets a superpower upgrade."

It's more involved than that, but basically before I started writing CiG, I started looking at all the 'Power up protagonist' plots and started analyzing their pitfalls. The biggest one that came to me was "The character becomes a plot device."

This is deliciously meta, because the nature of Solar powers are to BE a plot device.

Re: Creation stuff; Thaumaturgy is working in NGE-verse, which means SOMETHING's happening. And Shinji can respire Essence.

To whoever asked about Ramiel and the Mystery Box... Well, Sorry, spoilers!

K, read the thread, here's my recommendations that aren't already present (I think) and a bit about them/why I suggest them. More to follow because why not

[Finished]
For Laughs by Slinky-and-the-bloodwands.
It's a batman fic set in the movies. Features a TV crossover that's largely irrelevant since they're normal people and you pick up on their personalities fast. Fun since it tries to reconcile the movie-verse with some mildly realistic law-enforcement.

Bolo XL by Phantasm
Doctor who and Bolo, not even a little bit about powerlevel wanking. Pretty straightforward moral but it's presented well and fits very easily into the context of the Doctor's travels.

A Hole in the Sky by Tobu Ishi
Gurren Lagann, after the series so fairly calm. Character piece about the main character and his lady, alternate ending that surprised and delighted me.

An Officer and Some Gentlemen by Y St. Ace
Nothing very special, but I've had a hard time finding any fics for one piece that match the tone, so it goes on the list.

Probationary Member by Adrian Tullberg
DC Animated Universe. Essentially just touching on issues the show wouldn't so nothing very complex, ending is darker than it needed to be but pretty OK overall. I think there was some discussions of his other fics here.

Living in the Red Light by E Kelley
Batman. Looks to be based on the Animated series, but could be any. Focuses on people who's lives the guy changed, has my all-time favorite depiction of gotham in general and batman in particular.

[/Finished]

It's hardly surprising to find an atheist on 4chan. And if accepting fiction as pure entertainment instead of worrying about whether it's artistic or culturally important somehow makes me "edgy", then I must be edgy.

I'm so low-brow I thought "Freddy Got Fingered" was the funniest movie ever.

(any why is it considered ultimate low-brow, it doesn't even feature toilet humor?)
>>
>>23728663
I keep reading and enjoying Dungeon Keeper Ami, but I'm not sure how I feel about it. I think it's biggest problem is that a good author with an interesting premise has for some reason decided to attach themselves to a truly terrible site.

>>23728770
Thank you kindly! NGE is a character drama, first and foremost, it's also undergoing a genre shift. Scathing Giant Robot Deconstruction to Wuxia Epic.
>>
>>23728776
>why is it considered ultimate low-brow
Because it's completely asinine. There is not one moment in Freddy Got Fingered that you could define as intelligent, or even coherent. You know that guy who gets so hammered he can't see straight, then tries to tell a joke, but keeps giggling to himself and can never remember what joke he was telling so he winds up telling bits and pieces of twelve different jokes in between giggle fits? THAT is Freddy Got Fingered.

As someone who thinks arrowheads of total destruction are simply an application of internal consistency and should thus be allowed, I find the writing in MoR needlessly preachy and smug. I WANT to like a fic where Harry gets to channel Ender Wiggin, I really really do, but I just can't.

Next up, the Unfinished (and likely to remain that way forever) fics! Someone please, read one or two and suffer with me.

In Memoria by Imperial Overlord
Backstory to an Inquisitor, I like his set up for the 40k universe since he tries to make sense of it while keeping it consistent. Also recommend most of his other stuff. Lots of /tg/ things since he writes many games into stories.

Hadley's Revenge by Academia Nut.
Just a one-shot and it should've been on the other list since it stands alone completed, but every single other thing I've found of his isn't done. Many good things too, but stick with the last few years unless you spot something from a particular fandom you enjoy, he's improved since Shinji and Warhammer40k.

The Game of Champions by L. Lamora
Yea, already mentioned and praised in thread but deserves double I.M.O. Pokemon made plausible, interesting characters and development, written in a way that suggests it's the "truth behind the myth" for the normal series.

Confessions of a Wayward Son by Tyrant of the East
Posted on /tg/ a while back, 40k story about a sorcerer of the thousand sons who feels regret. Pleasant read. Author actually stopped writing after someone stole his eeeeh- 40k and WoW crossover and sold it on Amazon.

Dreaming of Sunshine by Silver Queen
O.K. This has every marking of a really awful first attempt at fanfiction -or writing at all- on the cover. I hesitate to mention it out of embarrassment even on here. It's a Naruto self-insert fic which seems slavishly devoted to canon so far at more than 300k words. Whew.
I love the characterization, everyone feels real. There aren't any power-wanking shenanigans, the main character tries her darndest and still fails to keep up with the setting protagonists. The handling of OOC knowledge is plausible and convincing, and I enjoy the looks at the mechanics of the setting that weren't properly taken advantage of in the original medium.

The NATIONAL age of consent in Japan is thirteen.
The individual Prefectures all have ages of consent that are much more "normal", none of them being lower than sixteen.
The national AoC remains unchanged because all of the Prefectures already have AoC laws that do the job so there's no reason for the national government to waste their time changing the national one.

Because kids usually start having the first sexual experiences at that age anyway and the idea of a 18 year old geting in trouble from having sex with her 16 year old girlfriend sounds retarded to most of us. So yeah, nobody is going to throw you in jail if you're a 35 years who fucks around with a 15 years old but you'd be still considered a pedophile and shunned by anybody who finds out about that.

I enjoyed MoR because it managed to accurately reproduce how I felt about Harry Potter when I read it, right down to quoting me verbatim on "snakes are sentient" line.

The third book made me give up on the series and it was nice to see I wasn't the only one to do so.

and this is worse than "scary movie" how?
>>
>>23729313
not who you were asking but

the main conflict of HPMoR isn't Harry versus Voldemort or Harry versus Wizarding Britain -
it's Harry versus Common Sense, most of the actual drama (that isn't the fandom, the author's pet peeves or parody) comes from the fact that Harry tries to outsmart everyone and everything indiscriminately without forethought for the consequences or why it might be that no one else has tried to do things his way before, sometimes this works out in his favor as he triumphantly struts his way across terrifying vistas of reality all the while turning his nose up at all the fools who dared call him mad, most times he just digs himself into a deeper hole and at any time he encounters the twin demons of "social norms" and "tact" he is swiftly roundhouse kicked into the gonads while the audience gives a raucous cheer in comeuppance

THEN READ. THE. SAOTOME. GAMBIT.

OR CHILDREN OF A FUCKING ELDER GOD.

Even if it does end badly, you still have that glorious glorious immortal Gendo.

Well to me, getting mocked by Spider-Man is exactly what Shocker deserved for wasting his talents on petty crime.
Like it's much better than Cap treating the villains he faces with respect, because frankly Shocker didn't deserve any until he got his shit together.
I mean considering Peter's background especially, you can really get why he would be extra harsh on people who squander their gifts on petty gain.
The fact that I never saw Shocker really come to terms with that was almost a dealbreaker to me.

Good grief people.

On the subject of AGSITV, because I've been looking for someone to answer this for a while, does anyone have a clue why the chapter before last turned into... like, an entire chapter of poetry which didn't rhyme?

Seriously, what the fuck was going on with that?

Louise has the Past Lives trait, and when you screw up too bad - or succeed too well - while using it, you can get possessed by your past self, which is generally a millenia-old God-King from the first age.

Louise, in particular, has the exaltation of Queen Merela, ruler of the Solar Deliberative, oldest and mightiest of her kind. This means she gets a lot of bonuses when channelling her past lives, but is also open to past-life fuckery more often.

The confusing poetry chapter was written from Merela's point of view while she possessed Louise, and alternated back and forth between the present (breaking out of prison, murdering everyone who got between her and freedom) and flashbacks to the first age (achieving Queenship, aging, becoming unnecessary in the world she helped create, the usurpation).

It was done in weird poetry because Merela is, from a human perspective, seriously fucked up. She has seen everything, done everything, learned pretty much everything, and has spent over a millenium being a bored ruler of everything. To emphasize that inhuman mindset, the writing style severly shifted.

I am a bit sad that there are so few good D&D fanfics.

The last decent one i read was probably Mystaras little Ponies by John Biles.

Which, it have to be said, have probably the best meshing between two different settings i have seen in a fanfic in a long long time.

So if anyone knows about any good D&D fanfics please share.

One of the first things Harry realized that was that he could possibly kill off every dark (or problematic) wizard/witch he wanted by owling them a hand grenade with sticky notes that said "pull pin and hold close to face for magic goodies."

Hasn't really gone into guns.

I liked 'The Nu Mantia which is Liberté' myself, since for a ZnT crossover it at least had the decency to go completely off rails in very short order, but the author's a slow sumbitch who took over two years to finish the second chapter.

>racist Asari
but Asari only ever form romantic relationships with non-Asari.

Does she just have absolute contempt for her SOs?

>probably literature-fags who hate all genre fiction
No, I don't like it because the writer/Harry comes across as a smarmy know-it-all cunt.
