Gentlemen. I live.
I plan on getting a twitter for things like the last few occasions where I had to cancel last minute.

Let's run tanks.

“Coilguns, son. Coilguns.”

Underneath the camoflauge net unrolled over his Humvee, you look up at General Garrison, who's 'desk' (actually a folding card table) is littered with empty, crumpled paper coffee cups. The dossier in his hand is fresh from group of scientists and defense contractors at General Dynamics, who have been working round the clock dissecting the two 'hellhounds', brand new Soviet tanks with witch integration suites.

“Coilguns, sir?”

He nods. “Yep. I personally don't have the science for it, but the eggheads say that it's bad news no matter where you look. They're also saying that these things are can throw kinetic penetrators past forty-five hundred feet per second, and have the capability to soft-launch staged ATGMs. That's also on top of a pair of witch integration focii which allows it to throw up that directional shield, it's reactive armor, and a top speed rivaling that of the Abrams. And apparently there's more, some Saudi units reported at least four more running around the desert, working in pairs as hunter-killer teams. They're fucking up my armor advances just about everywhere. The only other one that's gone down has been to some brave son-of-a-bitch with a shotgun and a scimitar.”

Garrison takes a drink from a quickly-depleting cup of coffee before dropping the dossier in front of the both of you. He leans back on his chair (Grenade crate) and rests his hands on his upper thighs, reminiscent of the classic samurai pose.

“So there's that, plus I've got to deal with your unit's losses. Two witches status unknown, two Abrams, one being a catastrophic kill, and four very experienced crewmen. I've heard that replacements are on the way, but there's also apparently a rumor that General Lindsay wants to pull 1 ARSOF out from under me for...something.”

You cock an eyebrow. “What would General Lindsay want with us, sir?”

He shakes his head. “Dunno, and like I said, it's just a rumor. Don't dwell on it, son, you've got much bigger things to worry about. I'd personally advise that you go make sure your tank's getting yanked back up to speed, but I also couldn't blame you if you wanted to beeline for the hospital.”

[] “If 1 ARSOF has the time to spare, I'm headed to the hospital, sir. Gotta check on my girls.”
[] “I'll make sure booze hound is good to go. Doc Holliday usually knows what they're doing.”

Also, how did Fatima's unit fare? I hope that one competent Saudi tanker is okay.

A coilgun is a type of projectile accelerator consisting of one or more coils used as electromagnets in the configuration of a linear motor that accelerate a ferromagnetic or conducting projectile to high velocity. In almost all coilgun configurations, the coils and the gun barrel are arranged on a common axis. The name Gauss gun is sometimes used for such devices in reference to Carl Friedrich Gauss, who formulated mathematical descriptions of the magnetic effect used by magnetic accelerators.

“Actually sir, if you don't have anything for us, I reckon I'm gonna go pay Doc Holiday a visit. They've got electricity, right? Couldn't hurt to catch up on the news either.”

The general nods his approval, summarily dismissing you and agreeing with your decision all at once. Your short walk to the MASH unit is punctuated by the screaming of low-flying jet engines overhead, no doubt a CAP from the RSAF. It wouldn't help if one of them pickled a munition right on your head, but you pull your armor tighter on your chest. At least your kevlar hadn't failed you yet.

After trudging through the sun baked landscape for what is definitely way too damn long, you show up at the series of GP medium tents. A soldier wearing the distinctive maroon beret of the Airborne stops you for a split second until he reads your rank and unit, and waves you past. Good, motherfucker. I didn't want to have to bury Johnny Skysoldier, too.

Inside one of the tents, the fact that this was a fighting hospital became positively evident. The stale smell of surgical sanitizer instantly assaults your nose, singing the hairs a bit. A dark haired Army nurse notices the bewildered captain muckin' about, and manages to pull your attention away from the foreign sights. Mom had always been big on sending you to the Hospital when you got bumped a bit too hard back in school, but dad always laughed and just told you to walk it off. Thus, you hadn't been in a hospital...almost ever.

“Sir? Can I help you find something?”

“Any chance you'd happen to know where a pair of my witches are?” You ask, snapping out of your daydream.

The sargeant blinks once, before replying. “Um. Well sir, your master sergeant was flown to Walter Reed just this morning. That corporal is here somewhere, though. If you can find lieutenant colonel Boggs, he knows where she's at. He should be in his office.” She hugs a clipboard close to her chest and points you in the right direction.

You stop for a second, fully realizing what the nurse had just told you. Rockfield was hit so bad that she had to be flown back to the states. And they decided this without telling you, and in a single twelve hour span of doing what you hoped was their best.

And it was your fault she was hurt that bad.

Fuck.

Dragging your way through the tent flap, you see the light colonel sitting at his desk. His real desk. Why did all officers above you get a real desk? This was some bullshit.

He glances upward, reading your nametape, unit crest, and rank, before sending his eyes back down onto his paperwork.

“I help you, captain? I'm incredibly busy trying to save soldier's lives.”

You decide to give the man the benefit of the doubt. Combat stress manifests in everyone differently, apparently this doctor gets incredibly grumpy.

“Yessir. I was told by one of your staff that you've still got one of my witches here. Corporal Patterson? Just wondering where she's at.”

He whips his arm around on the papers, signing a form in triplicate before capping his pen and locking eyes with you.

“Captain, am I to understand that you're the one that got her and that master sergeant into the mess that they're in now?”

Aw hell.

“Reckon so, sir.”

“Then I need you to understand three things. The first is that I have no heal witches here, and even if I did and for reasons I can't explain, your girls wouldn't take priority. The second is that there is no way that you'd be able to get miss Patterson back into combat anytime soon, and by that, you're looking at six or so months. Finally, while I understand the inherent dangers of combat and that it was not your choice to make those girls face it, if I ever see witches come in here because of something you did again, I will eat your career. We clear, captain?”

Caught fully off guard by the impromptu dressing down, you find yourself in the position of attention, staring at a very dark spot on the tent's wall. “Clear, sir.”

He glares at you for a moment before taking his pen to more forms. “Building three, bunk zero. Go away.”

You smartly about face before striding out of the smaller personal tent of Boggs'. How could he say things like that to you, it wasn't your fault...was it? That night had turned into a blur, punctuated by your company being decimated.

The GP Medium named 'building three' is surprisingly easy to find, the massive 3 being stencil-painted on the side near the door being a dead giveaway. Inside, you find that the sleeping corporal Patterson has the whole tent to herself. A few clean bandages are wrapped around her arms, covering what, you're not sure. A purplish bruise forming on her left orbital makes it look like she's the victim of a barfight gone wrong... or a domestic abuse case. Maybe that's what that doctor meant?

Papers, pictures litter the area around her bunk. The papers have quite a bit of scribbling on them, letters undoubtedly, and the pictures show Patterson at one of the academies with her friends.

>>
>>23669906
>>23669858

Yeah. Iraq is actually a backwater theatre at the moment, and what healwitches there are are needed elsewhere, and are still swamped regardless.
>>
>>23669997
Because Rockfield's injuries were probably far more serious, necessitating an immediate transfer to a more qualified facility. Patterson's injuries are much lighter and more stable, but it'll just take a while to heal. She'd be lower priority to ship back, especially since emergency air travel is not cheap.
>>
>>23670038
Though the irony is that since presumably there are healwitches in the States, Rockfield could possibly be put back on duty before Patterson.

You're vastly overestimating the size of 1 ARSOF. It's an incredibly small unit: it only composes one platoon of tanks, one ODA, and five (well, three now) witches.

NATO hasn't sent anything in force to Iraq yet.

>yet still big enough to get Jake and Co. Yanked off of the european front to fight along with a bunch of other guys and as a result the european line's getting hammered.

Deciding that letting Mary get her rest is the wiser decision, you scoop a few of the pictures off the floor before taking a seat near the foot of her bed. Your intial glances were correct, most of the photos are of what you assume to be Patterson and her classmates having fun, hamming for the camera at various different places. The Louvre, Brandenburg gate, West Point's Thayer monument. Damn, and you thought that being a scholarship football player got you to travel.

Two of the pictures, however, stand out in the handful. The first, a crumpled-at-the-edges picture of Patterson and her family, sitting to eat in a small deli. On the back, scrawled carefully in flowing cursive, 'Patterson Family, ca. 1988.” Mary had her mouth full of something, but still managed a smile. If you had been born a witch, you can't help but feel like this is what your family may have looked like. One sibling beside her with a goofy smile, the other undoubtedly taking the picture.
The second has a much more personal tone to it. It's your youngest corporal, holding a boy's hands at her waist and kissing him lightly on the San Francisco bay, the golden gate bridge being visible in the background. In the same handwriting on the back of this one, 'Mary and Tom, together again after Mary's final 'class dismissed! (awwww!) Early 1989.' You look intently at the picture for a moment, making sure to remember, no, suffer every last detail. You'll be damned if you let something happen to your girls ever again.

“He's a Phantom pilot, sir. Off the Kitty Hawk. We're gonna get married once this is all over. I'm gonna cook food. Just...just cook.” Mary says, sitting up in her bed. Taking your eyes off the bruise on her face is chore enough, though it's not hard to hear her words being slurred.

“Mary...” You trail off, not having the heart to tell her that she should probably pay attention to the news more often.

Also:

When you're at sea, being 100 feet in the air lets you see 20 miles unimpeded. The higher up you go, the farther you can see.

The dreadnoughts were at least 10,000 feet. The Kitty Hawk could have been 50, 60, 70 miles away. It didn't make a difference, because the Martian guns were hitscan masers that crossed the distance nigh-instantly.

>>23670201
>She deserves to know the truth!

Remember, we have to stress that we don't know the full extent of the casualties, so there's a still a chance he might be alive.

We can at least leave her with SOME hope. For all we know he might be stuck in Japan with Fronk or transferred to the Sara.
>>
>>23670774
>I can't say it was a real fuck up
It wasn't. As I said, it was a CORRECT call, based on what intel we had. In hindsight, calling it in and steering clear may have been MORE correct, but hindsight's 20/20, and it's not worth wasting time on "what-ifs" and "maybes" like that.
>>
Wait, confused here.

The witch was set up to marry a pilot, which in the other '89 quest, our choices got killed?

Well that sucks from the reader's perspective, but our tank driver isn't personally responsible for the fuck-up of a pilot.

This. So much fucking this. Also applies to the Kitty Hawk as well. It's been discussed to death and bringing it up literally adds nothing to the thread.

She holds her hands out, wanting her pictures. “I don't mind you looking through them, Captain. I just gotta have 'em back.” She says, forcing a weak smile.

You neatly organize the pictures, handing the stack back to her. “Mary, you should probably uh...you should probably grab a newspaper sometime. Let's not get into that. They're saying you're out for six months, what's up with that?”

She shakes her head and winces. “They're afraid of head trauma. I told them to not worry, I got bumped a lot harder than this at lacrosse and volleyball, but they're still not gonna clear me. Other than that it's just a bunch of sand burns and a sprained back. Top got it way worse.”

Instantly, you're wracked with worry. “What was wrong with her, Patterson?”

“Dunno, they didn't tell me. I think they put her under for her flight. I saw them wheeling her out in a wheelchair, and I heard a helicopter. Other than that...I don't know. Did we do wrong, sir?”

You sigh, letting out the apprehensive breath you'd been holding in. “No, corporal, we did right. What would've happened if those hellhounds ran into the house guards? Hot knife through butter.”

“Tom always says things like that. He always uses metaphors.”

“Mary, I need you to focus for a while. Are you sure that you didn't hear anything about Rockfield?”

She nods. “Positive sir.”

Well, shit.

“Alright, now listen. You get better. They're probably gonna fly you out, because you can't fight with us for a while, so says doc. You concentrate on getting better, and then you'll be back in it. We'll get 'em back for you, Mary. I swear it. I'll send the rest of the unit when we have time. Promise. Now go back to sleep.”

You stand up, being careful to not step on any of her letters.

“Captain!” Mary calls out from behind you. You spin, acknowledging her.

You clench your fists subconsciously. “You got it, Mary. I'll see what I can do to have Frank keep an eye peeled.”

She smiles again. Tiredly, weakly. “Thank you, Captain.” She rolls over and brings the sheet up over her shoulder.

Outside, you take a moment to collect yourself. Sure, you don't know all the details, and the Kitty wasn't lost with all hands...just most of them. At least, that's how it was reported. Either way, chances of a pilot getting out of there are probably pretty damn slim.

You take a deep breath, and fit your beret to your head. Off to the staging area we go.

There, outside of the booze hound, the company technicians are busy cranking the Abrams' turret around, trying to get it ready for transport.

“Computers are all dead. All of 'em. They think it was some sort of new round, not a penetrator, because there's incredibly light damage on our turret face. I personally think that they smoke rocks, and we got stupid lucky. Sir.” Nicky says, appearing at your side, hands in his pockets. “What's the news with the girls?”

“They're out for six or so months, at the very least. End quote.” you reply, watching the techs struggle with the manual turning handle.

“Damned shame.” Anderson replies, forcing a set of papers and a bottle of water into your chest. He hangs the sling of the super shorty shotgun he handed you around your neck, before answering your next question almost telepathically. “Personal effects and orders. Runner from Predator just dropped the latter half before you got back. Didn't read you guys' half, but ours say be packed and ready for movement in sixty mikes.”

You stuff the water in a pocket, re-settle the shotgun, and unfold your orders. Succintly, they state that the entirety of 1ARSOF is relieved of it's combat duty until further notice, and that you're being pulled into the Aberdeen proving grounds for reasons 'to be disclosed upon arrival.' Sharing this with Nicky, he shakes his head.

“They give us all this gear, all this fighting power, all this hate, and they never let us use it. What the fuck, man.” He snorts. “Fuckin' army, man.”

“Stow it, Nick. Go get everyone ready, tell 'em we're going to Maryland for a while. I'm gonna go talk to Garrison, see if I can find out what's what.”

He sighs, and turns to go carry out his orders. You spin on your heel, Anderson following quickly behind. “Christ sir. You people get yanked around more than we do.”

You crack a smile. “Think of all the frequent flier miles you're getting! Shit, we should be able to go first class on this one!”

He chuckles. “Yeah, sure. USAF first class, now with loadmasters who have showered in the past forty-eight hours!”

Stepping underneath the camo net once again, you find Garrison arguing into a radio. You don't want to pry, so you don't try to listen too hard. Sounds like, however, the Saudis aren't pushing as hard as he'd like them to. You couldn't act surprised if you had an Oscar.

Minutes later, he wings the handpiece into his humvee and glares at you. “Didn't I just see you?”

“Uh, yes sir. Any chance you'd know about us going to Aberdeen?”

His glare is unbreaking. “Captain, you'd best be fucking joking. And if you are, it needs to get a lot funnier. I suggest involving either Jews, Clowns, or Nazis. Possibly all three.”

Stupid assholes are going to get us all killed, I swear to god. Captain, they didn't tell me jack about this, and that runner wasn't from my office. I have no idea where he was from. I do, however, know that this is General Lindsay's personal signature. Looks like the rumors were true. Have fun back in the states, I guess. I have to go completely rework how this invasion is going to go. Motherfucker!”

He turns around, shouting about how he can't find his radio hand set before an aide reminds him that he fastballed it into the humvee. A glare, and a promise to fastball an aide into a humvee finds the handset being handed to the General on the bounce.

You turn to look at Anderson, who makes the 'dont ask' face you're coming to recognize from all special forces types. You both turn and walk out from under the 'office'.

“Well, at least we're going home? All hail the conquering heroes, right sir?”

“Yeah, something like that.”
