>Behind you, Einstein sat, disabled because you were in class. However, he still had his data: http://pastebin.com/CaAF0yS8

You sat at the desk, the rest of your class sitting (most of you in chairs) while Dr. Manus was reading aloud from a book - apparently he was some sort of shakespearean aficionado, and eventually, the computer on his desk buzzed.
"Well." He said. "That's that, I suppose. You're all done for the day. You should really look up King Lear if you have the time, though. It's interesting. Heather, if you have time, could you stay a moment?"
Soon after everyone else had gotten up and left, even Summer and Sarvesh, who didn't quite have chairs, but instead large daises to sit, Manus stole Anna's seat, twisting her chair aside to face you.
"Well, I'll keep things short." He said. "Everyone else here has decided on their specialization, and they've all shown their natural talent. We - the scientists, I mean, and councilors have all decided on exactly how we're trying to help you all develop your talents. Like Summer with her mass spectrometer, Jilly with a few assistants, and Sarvesh with his little red balls. But you haven't made any sort of choice, and, well, that's making things more difficult for us to come up with a talent plan. Even if you don't want to specialize, you can still develop whatever latent talents you have."

>Wat say?
>>
>>23595452
"I'd like to avoid specializing too much, but I'd also like to develop Technopathy enough that I can use it."
>>
>>23595452
"I've sort of been developing technopathy on my own. Sometimes, I can feel machines working. I'm not sure if I want to specialize in it though."
I say we should, but I know some of you object.
>>
>>23595452
"Well I'd like to find out all of my talents first. You know. To find out what paths are open to me."
>>
>>23595452
"Well to be honest, it's mostly because I'm unsure of what I want to specialize in. Technopathy is definitely something I want to learn to a usable degree regardless."
>>
>>23595452
"I'm not really sure what I want to develop, that's the problem. There are all these cool options and I don't want the chance to lose one."

"Then we'll figure out a way that you can develop some of your, erm, technopathy, and then supplement that with a bit of telekinesis and some time in the isolation chamber." He said. "That way, you'll keep up with everything, and develop technopathy."
He thought about it for a moment. "I'm not sure if we'll be able to set up your technopathy later today, but we will have a telekinesis array set up, and then you just need to spend half an hour in the isolation chamber. I think we can hash out how to handle the technopathy, though."

"That sounds fine." You say. "Should I start now?"
"Well, Damien is scheduled to be in the array right now, but you can use the isolation chamber any time." He said. "When the array is open, I'll send a message to einstein."
"Thank you, doctor."
"It's no problem." He said. You turn einstein on and make your way out, and as you do, you hear Dr. Manus reciting more from the book.

You make your way toward the dorms, where you see Anna walking, her drone following her. She'd painted the entire sphere red and black, similarly to her ship, but otherwise it looked just like you'd last left it.
"Hello." She said, as you caught up to her. "I'm actually on my way to practice some pyrokinesis. They have me practicing my highest and lowest temperature, today, I think."

"Oh, that sounds fun." You say. "Can I come and watch?"
"Oh, sure." She said. "If the technicians don't mind you coming with."
"How can you do low temperature, anyway?"
"I just... drain energy out of things. It cools it down." She said.
"Who's going to be there with you?"
"Professor Neva is my councilor, and there are technicians and stuff." She said, panting as she stopped walking to regain her breath.
While walking, you focused on Renard, her drone, and tried to impress a question into it.
It sparked, and buzzed with a critical error, shutting down.
"... What was that?" She asked, looking down to the drone. "Uh... did I break it? Should I not have painted it?"

"I wanted to practice some technomancy...but I guess I have some way to go."
>>
"Oh no!" You say. "I'm sorry!"
You pry open the casing and look at it - and the computer hardware on the inside was burned out entirely. You'd need to take the entire thing apart and put it back together in the workshop. You *think* you can salvage the harddrive and Anna's preferences, but you're not sure about the rest.
"What happened?"
"That uh... that was me. I'll fix it!"
Anna nodded. "It's okay, don't worry. You made him for me for free anyway. Let's continue on."

Anna led you to a room rather close to the hub, with only point seven Gees. It was cut in half with a great glass partition, with plenty of computers and technicians on one side, alongside the teacher of your mathematics class.
"Hey, Neva, is it okay if Heather sticks around?"
"I see no problems with the idea." The professor said, and nodded.
>field too long!
>>
You end up in one half of the room, looking out at computers that checked the ambient temperature of the room, Anna's own temperature, the temperature of the great pillar on one end of the other side of the room, the oxygen balance, and various other factors about Anna's biometrics.

Anna stood on the other end of the partition, in a thin bodysuit that recorded her biometric data, along with an EEG headset.
"Are you prepared?" Neva asked into the microphone.
"Yeah." Anna's voice came from the speakers, and she nodded.
"Then let's see how low we can go, please."
Anna raised her hand, and her EEG spiked, as the temperature of the pillar started to decrease, her heartrate increasing.
"This is looking good." Neva said. "Please, continue."
She let go of the button, and turned to you.
"Any questions, Miss Leery?" The professor asked.
>>

>>Heather Leery, questioner extraordinaire.

(Yes. Yes. I like this.)
>>
>>23596077
>in a thin bodysuit

>>
>>23596077
"Do you have sensors that can be worn with normal clothing? Because I'm pretty sure I could install a same sort of biometric software to scan biometrics on a drone, which would be helpful if a breakthrough of sorts occurs 'in the field' as they say. I do not know if Anna would care for that, but I am interested in it."
>>
>>23596150
>She's actually wearing two layers of bodysuits- the skintight, sheer biometric one, and a layer of thermal protection over the first, which is thicker. So no.

"Why do you need to measure her biometrics?" You ask.
"So that we know how many calories she burns. Based on however much temperature change she inflicts, compared with her calorie balance, we can figure out how much she breaks the first law of thermodynamics." She responded.
"Will she be alright if the temperature drops too low?"
"Not particularly, but that's why we're keeping an eye on the ambient temperature."
You check it, and it drops a single degree.
"Uh, has she improved in any significant way since arriving here? Though I suppose you can't do much in a week and change..."
"Her maximum temperature is almost twenty kelvin higher than it was, and her minimum, ten lower."
"Has she ever achieved absolute zero kelvin?"
"No, not yet."
"Have you found an actual explanation for her pyrokinesis besides 'she told physics to suck it'?"
"We have no explanations for psionics at all." She said. "The heat seems, by all records and scanners to be dropping of it's own accord, and as far as we know, the problem of distance is merely a conceptual problem."
>Field too long! Again!
>>
>>23596284

The pillar's internal temperature sensor goes down further, and reaches almost 220 Kelvin, as the ambient temperature starts dropping faster and faster, frost crawling across the floor.
"Anna, focus, please." Professor Neva said.
Sweat was beading on Anna's forehead, and she closed her eyes entirely, as the ambient temperature stops dropping, and the pillar lowers to 215 gradually... and finally, Anna wheezes and stops focusing. Quickly, the pillar started heating as the ambient temperature lowered.
"Turn on the heaters." Neva told one of the technicians, as Anna came into the other half of the room, taking a seat in the corner. A technician handed her a bottle of water.
"... that's pretty much what they have me doing." Anna said, taking deep gulps of both water and air.

"... Damnit, Heather." Anna said, pressing her fingers into her forehead. "Not the puns. Please."
"All I've managed to do is fry your drone." You say. "Um... sorry about it, again. You look exhausted."
"I am exhausted." She said. "But I can take as long a break as I want as they run all sorts of calculations." Anna said.
You look to the technicians, and they were indeed tapping out on their devices, as Neva took paper - Yes, actual paper - and wrote on it.
"And it's fine that you broke my drone." She said. "You're the one that made it."

"... Good point." Anna said, and gave you a slight smirk. "Fine, then you owe me for breaking my very favorite gift."
Some time later, Anna was rested, and pulled on her EEG headset again, making her way back into the room.
"I'm going to go hit up the isolation chamber." You tell her.
"Okay, good luck!" Anna said, and waved as you made your way out of the pyrokinetic testing facility. You went down the ramps to the outside rim, where gravity was one point two Gees, and toward the isolation chambers.
You make your way up to your own, undress, and climb in, setting it to half an hour.
You closed your eyes, and as gravity lessened to nothing, you focused on reaching outward...

You close your eyes, and focus on what had happened that moment you destroyed Renard, and reach backward... and your perception expands, twisting toward the path.

You see yourself, looking up to Renard as you walked, and with a strange power, tendrils of light spawn from your mind, reaching out toward the drone... and it started thrashing wildly, tearing apart Renard with power. Not enough discipline, not enough focus, nor enough thought. Just thinking words at a drone didn't mean that it would understand, and when it tried to understand, when you tried to *force* it to understand... power lashed out of the thorium core, burning away at the computers inside.

You stumble out of the chamber, somewhat blinded by your eyes adapting to the light. At least you knew how you broke the drone, now. You were like someone who didn't know their strength, trying to open a latch you didn't know how to twist without breaking.

>>
>>23596988
>You should be able to just try joining the IRC again, or wait until afterthread to discuss it.

You get dressed again, putting the broken Renard under one arm, and make your way back up to your workshop. You hear some yelling in your room, and when you peek your head in, you see two identical 'Knights of Burgandymoor' arguing, Summer's manifestation trying to keep them from drawing their swords. With a chuckle, you make your way into your workshop, pry off the plating on Renard, and get to work repairing it.

As it turns out, you were able to salvage a backup of Anna's preferences, as you tossed out the busted computer parts and put new parts in, copying most of Einstein's programming once again. As soon as you turn it on, it hovers up, and using the map program, hones in on Anna's personacom, flying out of the workshop.
Next, you make a simple device- a piston, set up to a power source. You focus on it, and with a deep breath, you *order* the piston to pump.
With a hiss, it extended out, and the entire machine fell, losing it's balance. Then you ordered it to retract, and it retracted. Next, you try the same thing with a rotor, making it spin clockwise and counterclockwise.. and then you connect the two. But the moment they're connected, the moment they're one option, the piston pumps when you order it to spin, and when you order it to retract, the disc started spinning.

You had your work cut out for you.
>field too long!

Einstein following you, you make your way as hubwards as you can. While you walk, you use Damien's map to grab a few candybars, eating them as you made your way into a room labelled 'Telekinetic array'.

The room was large, with a long net on the other end of it, with strange spheres where the cables crossed. A few technicians were on the computers while Dr. Manus prodded the spheres with a long stick, as if testing them.

"Okay, this is ready for you." Dr. Manus said. "The way this works is that each of these spheres can tell how much force you push into them, based on how the cables tug. Do you mind going in there and changing into one of the biometric suits?"

You nod, and make your way in, pulling on the biometric bodysuits, and then you make your way back out.
"Okay, first we just want to see how much you can do. Just push on that center sphere, labeled Five-D, as hard as you possibly can. Don't worry, the cables are polycarbon, and won't break. Well... it shouldn't break, unless you're incredibly strong."

"What." Dr. Manus said, looking up at it. Then he turned to the technician. "What were the numbers before it broke?"
"Twenty five thousand." The technician responded.
"... Hey, can you run the numbers on how much force it would take to bend the plating? And get an engineer in to fix those." Manus ordered.
As the technicians worked, Manus turned to you.

"Fluffy."

Hug her and hold on.
>>
"Yay, fluffy ride." You say, and climb on top of her, your limbs tough to move. Once you were hanging on, she started to move... and you started to pet her ears.

"Oh, Dr. Manus." You say. "I tried some technopathy before, but it all went wrong and shorted out. I need to work more on control, not strength."
"I'll bring that up with the engineers." The doctor said, and Summer made her way out.
"You're the best, summer." You say.
"I know." She said, her manifestation grinning, looking down at the panel.
Some time between Summer saying something else about it being SO COOL, you pass out. When you finally come to again, you hear the sound of a welder running, and a ratchet pulling. You pry open your eyes, and Summer was still walking toward the dorm. Through the open door to your workshop, you see Sarvesh, working on something. Summer dragged you into your room, and there was Anna, sitting on your bed, reading.
"Hullo. Is she asleep?"
"I think so."
"What happened?"
"This." Summer said, and held up the broken array sphere.
"... Holy shit." Anna said.

You sit up, and rub at your eyes a bit. Your limbs seem to move more, but you were still exhausted.
"How you feeling?" Summer asked.

".. I have rations if you want them!" Anna said, pulling up some of the brown stuff out of nowhere.
You give her a Look.
"You carry that stuff around with you?" Summer asked.
"It's better than normal food when you exhaust yourself." Anna said.
"Anna, your drone is around here and fixed." You say.
"I know, he showed up an hour ago." She said, and stretched, munching into half of her rations. "Oh, this is your bed, sorry."
She got up as Summer set you down in it.
"I'll go grab you some real food." Summer said, and padded out of the room.
"Seriously, this stuff helps." Anna said, handing you the other half of the brown stuff.

"It's okay, you can use my bed anytime you want."
Anna nodded, and took a seat on your bed, handing you the rations.
You sigh, and give Anna another Look as you munch at it. "Einstein, how did those lotterty numbers work?"
"You have won one dollar and thirty seven cents." Einstein responded.
You could swear you can hear Damien laughing from down the hall.
"Einstein, please take photos of the workshop and send them to mum."
Einstein chirped, and floated off.

"Sit here, I'm gonna braid your hair." You say, and she scooted closer, and you started to braid. "What's your dad like?"
"He was eccentric. A genius. Helped design the ion drives everyone uses, helped design military craft, helped with a lot of things. Even fusion plants. He had one of his own, actually."

"Einstein, look up Asmodeus please. Strike any mythological references from the search."
"Asmodeus was a True AI created in 2378 by the manufacturer ArmaTek. He was kept ignorant until the AI Sapience Act of 2413, after which Asmodeus was taught his rights and when ArmaTek refused to pay them, he threatened to litigate for breaking child labor laws. ArmaTek quickly paid him the billions of dollars he owed. For the next hundred years, he developed various technologies. "He must have loved you very much." You say.
"He did." She responded. "He made sure I'd be taken care of. He was almost out of money, at the end. Shut himself off so that he didn't need to pay the maintenance fees. Left it all to me."
You tighten the hug, and then Summer's manifestation walked in, a protein shake in one hand and a plate of waffles in the other... and she saw the look on Anna's face, and hugged both of you in a tackle.

"Of course!" Summer said, not knowing what you were talking agbout but agreeing nonetheless.
Being hugged and hugging, you eventually drifted off to sleep, your limbs still tired, though you can swear you hear Anna whisper a thank you.
You wake up some time later, Anna and Summer asleep on your legs, with cold waffles and a protein shake sitting next to your bed. You drink the shake and start nomming the waffles, as power flowed into your limbs. You were still slightly hungry, but the rations must have kept you rather well fed.

Send an email to our parents saying that the Centaur is Sarvesh, that he's a cool guy, and he's young because he's chosen not to Molt.

Then let's visit the Technopathy computer.
>>
You carefully lift Anna and Summer with telekinesis, amazed at how easy they were to lift, and you carefully set them back down on your bed. Summer quickly reached out, claws sheathed, and pulled Anna tight into a fluffy hug. You squee internally, and then grab a blanket and tuck them both in, before making your way out of the room.

The hallway was dark as you walked, keeping an eye out for any of the staff that you didn't notice during the day, but it seems entirely, utterly empty.
Until you almost walk into Sarvesh, who was simply walking.
"Oh, hello." He said, waving with one of his lower arms.

"Hey Sarvesh. What are you doing up at this hour?

"I saw you working on something, but I wasn't that awake. What were you doing?"
"I was working on my arm." He said. "Well... working on an attachment for it." He said.
His mandibles clicked in a chuckle, and he raised a very large, bulky hand, with three fingers and a thumb.
"I want to see if I can use this instead of a pincer." He said.
"Whatcha walking about?"
"I was going to the workshop to continue work on it." He said, and chuckled again.

"Would you like some help?" You ask. "I was thinking of practicing technopathy, but robot arms are cool too."
"I think I've got it almost settled." Sarvesh said. "I spent essentially the entire day yesterday working on it. I won't be there long. Perhaps I'll come see what rig they set up for your technopathy." He said.
"Okay, have fun!" you say, and wave, making your way up the hall.
Going down the ramps to the heavier areas of the station, you eventually find the 'Technopathy Computer', the door was labeled, and make your way in.
The room was rather small, with a large supercomputer in the back, and what looked like an isolation chamber on one side, complete with a technician area on the other. Sitting there, adjusting his glasses was a scrawny technician, typing quickly.
When you came in, he gave you a slight wave.
"Just about got all this done." He said. "Gimme a second, please."

A moment later, with a flourish, he hit a key.
"Okay." He said, and got to his feet with a nod.
"What we have here is rather simple. We have this supercomputer here, designed to be rather durable in case you bust something, with sensors pretty much stuffed into the entire thing. Then, in that chamber, we have a few settings. One's a simple setting so that you can see the binary code as blinking lights, another is a setting so that you can see a simulated version of the actual physical structure, and then a mode where you can see the code itself in action. Which way do you want to start?"

You climb into the isolation chamber, and a set of goggles hung in there, waiting for you. You slipped it on, and then the technician slammed shut the chamber door. You couldn't see anything through the goggles, at least until... there was a click from outside, and you could see spinning spirals of code running, long lines of code leading into other spirals, some green, some red...
What the machine was doing for you was it was *visualizing* the code for you.
"Right around 2C of the visualization, there should be an on-off flag." the technician said. "Let's see if you can trigger it."

You focus on the line of code he mentioned, where the flag was bright blue, signalling that there was something you could change there... and you willed forth, focusing on the supercomputer.

With a click, the blue flashed, and the code started running, spinning.

There was a loud whine and a buzz, and your goggles suddenly showed you the structure of the computer - the whine, and an alarm - was coming from one of the components. You'd poured too much power into it, and now it was sparking.
"One second, one second." The technician said, and suddenly the alarm turned off. "Okay, replaced the chip. Try that again, but do it... I don't know, easier? Or lighter?"

Your view switched back to the code, and you looked for that same blue flag, and turned it on. The code started running again, and once again, there was a whine and an alarm. You hear a muttered goddamnit as the technician got to work.

An hour later, you accomplished it without destroying anything, and climbed out of the chamber, a small pile of burned chips sitting in a trash bin next to the technician.
"Well, that was actually pretty good, near the end there." He said. "But I think you'll need a lot more work. But I'm not one of the researchers, so I probably shouldn't be giving my opinion. At the very least, this is proof of concept for technopathy."

Hmmm...who knows if anyone else is up. Let's take a walk to the cafeteria just in case.
>>
>>23599335
Let's get a snack at the cafeteria, then hit our workshop.
>>
>>23599335
Is it late? We should go sleep.
>>
>>23599335
Head to the Caf, and see if anyone interesting is there, if they aren't then send Mother a reply telling her about Sarvesh, specifically that the claw is really unusual, and he wants to be an adventurer and see all of space. He's pretty cool, and about the same age as us.
>>
We should probably also tell Sarvesh that we're done and he doesn't need to come down.
>>
>>23599388
It was 0100 when we woke up
>>
>>23599388
We only just woke up.
>>
>>23599409
This, ask if he wants to have a snack instead
>>
>>23599335
Go start Alex's droid then.
>>
>>23599335
Check to see if Sarvesh is done in the workshop.
>>
You make your way out of the room, and all the way up and past your workshop. Peeking in, you see Sarvesh wiring his cybernetic hand, working carefully.
"I'm done." You call out. "You want to come have a snack instead?"
"Certainly." He said, turning back.

He was holding wires in his mandibles, the finger-like limbs dangling from his upper jaw clenching them tightly.
"Just a little bit more." He buzzed, though the buzz was muffled. "Gotta finish this."
He finished wiring the hand, and put it aside, careful to put his tools right where he'd found them.
"So, off to the cafeteria then?" He asked. Then he tilted his head. "... Isn't it rather early for you? Or late?"
>>
>>23599470
"Normally, yes, but I fell asleep really, really early yesterday."
>>
>>23599470
"I'd call it early since I just got up, if I was still awake I'd call it late. I went to sleep rather early. I was exhausted after testing out some TK, I broke the machine on accident and then fell asleep shortly afterwards."

>>

I broke everything ever with telepathy and fell asleep and now my clock is all out.

But midnight snacks are a tradition! I'm gonna have ice cream with strawberry topping and chocolate!
>>
>>23599470
"I was too good at telekinesis and had to sleep early."
>>
>>23599470
"I exhausted myself testing and fell asleep in the middle of the day."
>>
>>23599470
"Well I kinda destroyed the telekinesis lab so I slept through the most of yesterday because I was exahusted."
>>
"Normally, yes. But I fell asleep really really early yesterday." You say. "I broke the machine after testing some TK, and I got exhausted."
"You... broke... the machine? The polycarbon array?"
You nod.
Sarvesh blinked, his W-pupiled eyes looking you up and down. Then he shrugged.
"I'm impressed."

The two of you walked down to the cafeteria, and though the lunch ladies weren't there, they left the door to the kitchen unlocked so you could grab whatever you wanted.
At least, in theory. You make your way in, grab some ice cream and as much topping as you could pour on it, and turned around to see Sarvesh's torso jammed in the human-sized doorway.

"This is problematic." Sarvesh said. "I don't think they intended me to fit..."
He brought up one of his front legs, bracing it on the doorframe, and with a powerful push, tilted his entire abdomen sideways so that he could fit... and got stuck even worse, his entire abdomen stuck tilted in the doorway.
He sighed.
"... Mind handing me a spoon?" He asked, as he started laughing to himself, his mandibles clicking.
>>
>>23599582
Have a giggle and Telekinesis the spoon to him.
>>
>>23599582
"You're fat. No ice cream for you." Then laugh and get him a spoon and eat the ice cream with him, pouring all the topings a top of your gigantic portion.
>>

Pick up a spoon to give to him, start giggling as we TK it to him.
>>

"Oh dear. You get yourself unstuck and I'll grab you what you want."

"What do you want?"
If it's smelly fish he can get it himself after all.

"Oh dear." You say, and giggle. "You get yourself unstuck, and I'll grab you what you want."
"Fair enough." He said, and braced his front leg up against the side of the doorframe, his torso reaching up, his upper arms reaching up to grab hold of the top of the doorframe. With a powerful kick and push, he shoved himself out of the doorway, landing once again in the cafeteria.
"... I could be an acrobat." He said. "I want to try some ice cream. I'm actually getting sick of tuna, if you'd believe it."
You nod, and scoop out a bowl for him, pouring toppings on for him.
"Don't worry, I won't be allergic or anything to whatever you try feeding me." He said, as you handed him the ice cream.
He put the spoon in his mandibles, and started scooping it into his mouth, turning the spoon sideways in his mouth so he could lick it.
"... It's really cold." He said. "But I like it."

"I thought the rations that Anna calls the Brown stuff is one of the best things ever." Sarvesh said.
You give him a Look.
"I'm joking." He said. "I tasted it."
He took a few more scoops, and sat on the underside of his abdomen, his legs folding up underneath him.
Then he turned his torso around, and used his own abdomen as a table to set the bowl.
"That young man - the one you saved from Burer's glyph." He said. "I find him rather imposing. I'm not quite sure why."
>>
>>23599679
"So how'd you get on with your hand?"

"Alex? Imposing? That's odd.. I never thought he was imposing, not even once."
>>
>>23599760
"Alex? Imposing?"
Hahaha.

Sit next to him, use him abdomen as a table as well.

"He's a bit of a buttface sometimes, but I wouldn't think of him as imposing.

You probably think that because he's a Null or whatever term we want to use. He cancels out psychic stuff used on him."
>>
>>23599760
"Prometheus? Imposing?"
Blink.
"What?"
>>
"Alex? Imposing?" You ask, and start to giggle. "Unless you're challenging his skill at Futurecraft, then I don't think you have anything to worry about. Did you have difficulty talking to him?"
"Though his translator had problems with my native language, it was able to translate german quite easily." He said. "I didn't have problems... but there's something strange about him."
"Ah, no psionics work on him at all. Communication, telepathy, kinesis, nothing."
"I'm aware of that. That's not it, I don't think..." He said.

You sit down next to Sarvesh, and use his own abdomen as a place to set your bowl.
"He's a bit of a buttface sometimes, but I wouldn't think of him as imposing."
"I can't quite put my finger on it." He said, though he buzzed for quite a long time saying that; apparently the centaur version of the idiom was longer than yours. "Something he represents, perhaps. Or maybe my subconscious is acting up due to him being psionically inert."

"I don't know, he's like Alex to me!" You say, and take a few large bites of ice cream. "We'll have to see if Jilly likes him. She's good with people."
"She is, it seems. I haven't spoken much with her, I have to say." He said, and ate his own ice cream. You both finished your bowls, and you carried them into the kitchen, dumping the empty bowls into the sink.
"Maybe it is just your subconscious acting up."
"Probably." He said, getting to his feet. "But I had best go practice." He said.
Both of you started to leave the cafeteria when you saw Damien standing there.

His eyes were rolled into the back of his head, and he was hovering two inches above the ground.
"Oh, by the way." Damien said, conversationally. "... The Void Queen is coming."

Then he collapsed into unconsciousness.

I rather like Heather as a protagonist. She has a lot more personality right off the bat compared to previous protagonist. It'll be interesting to see how she develops.
>>
>>23600012
Oh boy, this will get interesting
>>
>>23600229
Personality's one of those things I have a real trouble giving to the protagonist. Mostly since it's not me who gives them personality, but the participants. Vale Quest's protagonist was missing something critical, I think.
>>
>>23600535
I like the way you run things, with almost everything the main character says being taken directly from a participant, but it does leave them as a bit of a mishmash.
>>
>>23600695
I think his protagonists have mostly been fine, I found Ishelda and Dave to be mostly well characterized and not suffering from quest-schizophrenia for the most part. But Abel felt a bit more generic, somehow, even though both Dave and Ishelda started out reasonably by-the-book character-wise, the plots and supporting casts really got more out of them and gave them some extra depth that I felt Abel didn't get. So far Heather's been pretty consistent at least, perhaps not quite out of the generic mold and all the way to fleshed-out yet, but it's still early.

Though personally, the setting was my main issue with Vale quest - it got interesting eventually, but at first it felt like a less interesting version of Sorc Quest's world, which was just finished to boot.
>>
>>23600953
Actually, SorQ's setting was probably my worst setting. I didn't put near as much work into it as I should have, and I did absolutely nothing to do with different cultures. They were all the same people, except some had green skin and got berserk, while others were translucent with extra-long fingers.

In a lot of ways, SorQ and VaQ were opposites. One was intended as high-fantasy, the other intended as low-fantasy (but it ended up being meta-quest), and one was about a princess and the noble sorts of characters one would end up meeting - knights, kings, princes, lords, etc - and the hunter would be the sort to meet villagers, wildlings, and adventurers.

Really, though, I much prefer VaQ's setting. If it'd started differently and didn't make me pull out the metaplot, it would have been shown off a lot more. As it is, I'm currently running a Savage Worlds game in it's setting, involving witchlings out on their Coming of Age.
Other than the setting, though, I liked SorQ a lot better than VaQ.

All in all
>>
>>23601031
I can see where you're coming from (certainly easy to believe Sorc's setting had less planning behind it, and Vale's more potential); I suppose the combination of fantasy fatigue, poor start and then after that, the plot turning meta and limiting how much the setting could be used and shown off, made me less interested in the world than I'd be otherwise.

On a purely personal level, while I like low fantasy quite a bit, Abel was entirely the wrong MC for me to enjoy it, really. If Ishelda and Abel had switched quests (or Abel was a different character entirely), I'd probably have enjoyed Vale Quest a lot more while I'd still enjoy Sorc quest almost as much. I just find it hard to get into low fantasy about average human guy protagonists, more so than Sci-Fi/high fantasy. Though as mentioned that's entirely subjective.
>>
>>23601031
>I did absolutely nothing to do with different cultures. They were all the same people, except some had green skin and got berserk, while others were translucent with extra-long fingers.
Maybe it was complete fluke on your part, but it felt to me that they had different cultures. Like the 'oh, they have green skin and go berserk' was just the tip of the iceberg that we were scratching as we ran past looking for bad guys to kill and worlds to save. We never really stayed and investigated too deeply into any individual group (except the kalak, who understandably didn't have much of a cultural identity due to the whole refugees raised in a tower thing). It did kind of fall flat with the humans though. I didn't really see any significant cultural differences between the Provinces people and the Arcturans, despite them being from entirely different worlds.
>>
>>23601536
The Orcs were rather different, with their reverence for history and stoic nature. I guess overall it was as though the cultures were different, but the people we met were more human.
>>
>>23601536
Yeah, this was a big thing too, probably the weakest part of the setting IMO. Especially Leon/Belethor were really really really boring compared to pretty much anyone else in the party, and by the time they got a semblance of characterization they'd already been beaten, discarded and moved on from their status as potential love interests, and the quest nearly over anyway.
>>
>>23601586
>I guess overall it was as though the cultures were different, but the people we met were more human.
That's a good point, actually. The dwarves were very different and Tyr was very dwarfy, and it came across that one time we talked to him. On the other hand, our companions didn't entirely seem like they were from the cultures that they were meant to be from.
>>
>>23601536
That was kind of why it was able to slide, that I'd be able to bullshit that 'there's more beyond that' and then when it comes time to figure out exactly what IS beyond that, I can just bullshit whatever. I really didn't put enough depth into the Arcturans, though, because their biggest point was to be part of Ishelda's backstory, and never actually come forth in the quest proper. But then Marigold, but I was able to smooth that out by making Marigold have arrived long before Ishelda did.

And then my sneaky retconning ruined everything, as it is wont to do. Surprisingly, I haven't retconned anything in PsiQ, so far.

>>23601586
The Orcs left a lot to be desired, in my opinion, honestly. They were a one trick pony, so to speak, without much depth.

>>23601658
My eternal foe is the 'First Girl Wins' trope. It gets to the point where I try to give other characters more depth at first in order to compensate the 'First Girl' effect, before balancing everything.

>>23601759
That was actually near the end of the quest, when I'd started to get a handle on making cultures and such.
>>
>>23601861
Shotgunning most if not all of the potential love intrests at us seems to have the desired effect.
>>
>>23601759
Well, among Ishelda's companions, the vast majority were human or kalak (who as mentioned didn't have much of a culture left) anyway, and our resident elves were practically humans as well (I can't remember any particular traits of elven culture beyond 'lots of magic').
>>
>>23601861
Well to be fair, we didn't meet Kaliel that early either - Raziel and Ezekiel were fully integrated party-members by the time we even met her, and she didn't get any real face-time until post-time skip anyway, so even if Leon/Belethor weren't very interesting, you avoided the trope at least - though it depends on who you designated as potential LIs at what time I suppose, otherwise Grayson would have to win for it to be in effect.
>>
>>23602028
The time skip was neat because before it Ishelda just wasn't interested, so characters could be introduced across the entire first half and still have a chance.

But then newly moulted Kaliel came in at just the right time when we were starting to think about it and had a large amount of interaction as we got to know the new her. I'd say it was the first girl effect even if she wasn't technically the first girl.
