You're Kylan Arvus and you've been turned into a freak of nature. After a failed attempt to escape a doomed colony ship, you were brought before an Icorani Queen (giant psychic bug) that tried to break into you mind and make you part of the Hive. It was only thanks to your own psychic skills and natural resilience that you survived. Some time afterwards, you regained consciousness in the custody of the Sophons, a secretive race with technology far more advanced than the Galactic norm. Your body had been mangled beyond all recognition but your psionic talents allowed you to astrally project your consciousness to observe the world around. Thanks to some major errors made during your astral jaunt, you triggered a reconstruction of your body using alien DNA. You possess some traits from a variety of species, a complete lack of pigment, acute darkvision, a redundant nervous system, and several more.

Currently, you are standing in a Sophon hospital ward. You're wearing a leather bomber jacket, blue jeans, black boots, and a black Federation Marines t-shirt. You push your Aviator sunglasses up the bridge of your nose and down your glass of whiskey.

Jorcos, the Sophon adjutant assigned to you, asks you if you're ready to meet the Board of Directors, effectively the Sophon ruling Council.

"They have many questions to ask you Lieutenant. We shouldn't keep them waiting."

>What do you do?
>Rolls are only used when I request them. Generally 1d100.

Jorcos appears surprised by the first question, "There isn't anyone on board who actively bears you ill-will. A majority of the crew knows that we've picked up a human who may possess information that we need. None of them wish to harm you, physically or in any other manner."

"As for what you should expect? Well, the Board is known for being extremely direct. They dislike politicking or word play and prefer it when questions are given straight answers. There are only three members on the Boards, One, Two and Three. One is very serious and dislikes dawdling. Two likes to approach situations from multiple angles before fully committing herself and Three is very quiet and introspective but a very good problem solver.

They are likely to get very hostile if they are prevented from obtaining the information they want. Such as when the subjects they are questioning are late."

That last statement seemed to be directed towards you.

>Anything you want to do before you go? Any questions you want to ask Jorcos along the way?

rock and roll.
>>
"Well then, let's rock and roll."

Jorcos gives you a look. Well, you think he gave you a look, you can't tell with that helmet on.

He nods. "Follow me."

You step out of your hospital room and into the blue and white hallway. Blue and white seems to be the predominant Sophon aesthetique and considering the fact that Sophons themselves are blue and white, you're not that surprised. Jorcos turns left and you begin to follow him. Around you, many Sophons walk about, handling their duties. Some appear to be working maintenance, others appear to be a sort of security detail. A few others appear to be medical workers of some kind. It's hard to tell since they're all wearing suits.

As Jorcos passes by a large window, you take a moment to peer out. Below you is a large blue and green planet, not that dissimilar from Earth.

Jorcos notes your glances and walks back towards you. "That is Elrun Beta, the 43rd of our colonies in the Terminus Belt."

You nod then follow Jorcos once more.

"Looks nifty. Reminds me of Earth. Good old Terra Primaris. Was it a dead world before your race got here?" You ask.

Jorcos nodded. "Although it didn't actually start that way. The planet was covered in a massive amount of pollutants and and debris. It took two decades of terraforming to to even start reverting the damage. Whatever race lived there before wiped themselves out."

You and Jorcos continue the remainder of your walk in silence. You notice that some of the Sophons that you pass seem to stare at you briefly, their heads turning to follow you before they go back to whatever they were working on.

As you approach a large plasteel door, Jorcos steps to one side and fishes something out of a pouch on his belt.

"Before I forget, here are your ID tags." He hands you the blackened metal markers. "I know they're generally important to you military types. Be polite but straightforward when dealing with the Board, they dislike politicking."

You nod and turn to the door. You take a deep breath and walk through the doorway.

The room you're in is well-lit. A large conference table with a floating holographic representation of the galaxy dominates the space. On the other side of the room three Sophons sit in high backed chairs.

The one in the center leans forward and speaks in a higher lilting voice.

"Greetings, I am One. To my left is Two and to my right is Three. We are the Board of Directors. Might we know your name?"

One nods and makes a motion to the hologram of the galaxy. It zooms in to a single point, depicting a small blue star and an asteroid field. A small portion of the system is highlighted red.

"This is BD-5289, the system where we found your body. The remnants of the colony ship that you were aboard were found in the blue field. Now, under most circumstances, we wouldn't have given the wreck a second glance. But the fact that the entire area was bathed in positronic lightning made it much more valuable to investigate. We had to wait 6 months for the field to die down before we could retrieve your body and the body of the Hive Queen. Now, what we want to know is what that Queen was doing on the ship in the first place. The Icorani were driven to extinction centuries ago and to find a juvenile Queen now is extremely disturbing. What do you know of this? Who are you and why were you on the ship in the first place?"

>Security Detail: You were assigned to the Sonderland, a Fjord-class Colony ship, as part of the security detail. The ship had been investigating a barren world on its way to its assigned colonization point. The survey team had just docked when all hell broke loose.

>You're a full 1st Lieutenant in the Federation Marine Corp. Security detail is necessary to ward off pirates and enemy boarders. It's like equating Army Rangers with Park Rangers.

"I was assigned to the marine team that was sent to recon the FSS Sonderland, one of our colony ships that had failed to report in. As soon as we docked, our shuttle was destroyed. The team was slaughtered by the bugs and I was taken alive to the Queen who tried to, I don't know, eat my mind and make me part of the hive, I would guess. Then I kinda tore her mind apart."

One looks at you then makes a snorting sound, something that tells you she isn't amused.

Two steps forward and begins to speak, "Icorani Queens were some of the most powerful Psionics in the known galaxy. There are records of entire armies turning traitor due to the urgings of a single queen. And yet you state that you somehow managed to defeat it in a battle of wills? That is VERY hard to believe."

It was at this point the Three raised his hand. "I've been studying the scans of Lieutenant Arvus's brain and I believe I might have an explanation for this incident, One, Two."

They both turned to look at him while Three shifted to stare at you.

"Lieutenant, for what reason did you undergo Psychoconditioning?"

Your mind flashes back to New Phyrexia. You remember the screaming as the bombs went off and the ungodly crash as the cruiser hit the ground. Four-Hundred thousand Dead Turians in less than two minutes. That was horrifying but it was necessary. It killed the Hierarchy's war drive long enough for high command to maneuver four battlegroups into the projected path. Four Hundred Thousand turian lives traded for millions of humans. There were more missions but those weren't relevant. The echoes of the past could wait, you had a job to do.

"I participated in several Classified missions for my government. I'm not willing to discuss the details, for obvious reasons."

Three inclines his head. "Understandable. But it help explain things. Icorani Queens generally don't realize their full potential until they at least two centuries old. Judging from the analysis of this one's corpse, it was barely fifty years of age. Its less than exemplary abilities, combined with the additional defenses from the Psychoconditioning gave Arvus here a slim chance of winning."

Two nodded sagely, "That would also explain the lightning field. The Queen's raw power was channeled through the Lt's mind which effectively purified the energy. It also explains the damage done to you body and the fact that you survived for fifty years in space."

The last sentence makes your blood run cold.

"Wait a moment, fifty goddamn years?"

"Well, more like 50 years, 42 days and 19 hours." Two answers.

The realization hits you like a ton of bricks and you sink into a nearby chair. You begin to chuckle in a dead, dry manner.

"Heh, I guess I was reported as KIA then. Does the Federation know of this?"

One spoke up again, "We do not believe the Federation knows of anything happening outside of the Orion Arm."

She gestures to the Holo again and it zooms out to display an entire arm of the galaxy.

"We are here." A small blue arrow appears near the base of the arm, close to the Galactic Core. "We found you here." A red arrow appears closer to the outer edge of the Arm. However, human controlled space only exists here." A small green band appears near the outermost edge of the galaxy.

You swallow, "Might I ask what's become of Humanity while I slumbered?"

One and Two quickly exchanged glances while Three took the opportunity to snag a seat for himself.

"We were getting to that, " Two answered. "And while we Sophons don't actively participate in the affairs of the galaxy, we do like to keep tabs on various species. Your Federation appeared on the galactic stage about three centuries ago and since then has fought several wars with its neighbors. You made a name for yourselves as formidable but fair empire. However, two decades ago, the S'ijiskhan Empire launched several sneak attacks that crippled the Federation's infrastructure. In 2571, they captured or destroyed every single colony that you humans had. Only your homeworld was spared and that's due to the fact it's impossible to locate thanks to it's position in the Jericho Rift."

It's a lot to take in. You've been asleep for 50 years and in the meantime the Federation was nearly wiped out.

You sigh and look at the ceiling, "That just takes the cake. What do you expect of me then? I'm not exactly human anymore."

One motions to the holo again and the galaxy disappears before being replaced with an image of a human skeleton. It's probably yours you realize with a start.

"We don't expect anything of you. You are free to do as you wish. The genetic data that you provided and the information that you just gave us is sufficient to pay for your reconstruction surgery." One says as she examines the skeleton. "However, you so not have any money to your name or, in fact, a name at all. You do not exist in the Galactic Republic Database nor in that of the Council systems. You are most likely dead to your government and you will survive of your own without some form of currency. As such, we are willing to make another deal. If you would permit us to study your body a bit more and run some tests we will deposit you on the closest Republic center of trade after creating an identity for you in the Republic database. You will also receive 10,000 Credits and some basic equipment. Do you believe this is fair?" She turns to look at you directly with the last statement.

You shudder then confirm, "Yes, I accept. You and your people have been extremely fair to me."

One seems to be smiling. "I thought you might find it agreeable. We'll get you started right away."

The door slides open and Jorcos steps inside.

"Jorcos," One says. "Take Lieutenant Arvus here to the Psionics Labs for evaluation."

"Can you share with me any data you might find?"

I'm sorry to hear about your home. Most sophons rarely ever pay attention to anything outside of our society so don't expect much sympathy from others. Other than that, You know why you're being evaluated?"

You nod, "We run some tests, you get some data, I get some money and gear and an identity and then you guys drop me off on a Republic planet. Sounds like a fair trade."

"It's an excellent trade by all accounts." Jorcos says. "We get to examine a real Chimaera and you get reimbursed for the trouble."

You and Jorcos step on the grav-lift and wait as you're carried to a lower floor.

"Level 17, Psionics" Comes a synthesized voice from above.

You step off the lift and into a clean and sterile lab. There are several lab benches set off to one side and a wide open space with several instruments spaced throughout.

"Well, it's awfully fulfilling, having an extra edge over your opponent. "My abilities are more mundane, more within logic than a spell, I guess. I'd say it's not so glamorous, but my opinions are 50 years out of date at this point. Although, after being dormant for so long I'm going to have to exercise my psionic muscles to get them back into shape. But the thing that concerns me is that you have a whole psionic department and have never even seen a psion before? Should I be worried?"

She nods eagerly, "Yes, I understand completely. I've devoted a great deal of time to studying psionics but that was all theory. You see Sophons are all Psychic nulls and we aren't affected by the psionic talents of other races. The current hypothesis is that we evolved it as a defense against the less intelligent but psionically capable predators on our homeworld and I'm rambling again aren't I? I'm sorry. But yes, I'm the only Psionic "Expert" aboard the Carpath. Nobody else wanted the position so here I am. Do you have other questions?"

You think for a minute and then notice the very slight curves that indicate that Decala is female.

"What's it like, living inside those suits?"

Decala's head perks up in surprise, "Oh, the suits? They're just there for function. We can access all kinds of tools and data from our helmets. We're not restricted to them and there's no stigma associated with not wearing one. Is there anything else you want to ask before we begin?"

Decala nods enthusiastically, "Yep! A fully sentient Chimaera, the first one in existence! It's a pretty sinificant breakthrough to be honest."

"Well, okay. What kind of studies are we going to be preforming on me today exactly?"

"Well, we're taking a measure of your physical abilities first in order to establish a baseline of your statistics. Then we'll be testing your psionic abilities in order to ascertain what may have changed about them."

"I'll be making a report as we go along for the Board." Jorcos pipes in. "They want the info ASAP. If we're lucky, you'll be off this ship tomorrow."

You nod, then turn back to Decala, "Is there anything else I should know?"

"Just that you'll need to where this suit while we're testing you." She says while holding out a blue and white jumpsuit.

You take the suit as Decala and Jorcos walk to a lab console and quickly change while their backs are turned. You make your way over to the first station and notice a metal rod lying on the ground.

"The rod is magnetically attuned." Jorcos calls out. "We can simulate any weight possible. Now lift it up."

You bend over and grasp the bar and begin to lift.

It's perfectly valid. Let's break this down, sub-human

"It is" means the post is doing something. "not" is a adv and is used to negate the sentence, phrase, or word that it modifies. "meant" is a vb and the past tense and past participle of "mean". That word means (doyouseeit) To design, intend, or destine for a certain purpose or end.

So if the post is not designed or for a purpose, it accepted english. You're just a retard.

You easily heft the bar up despite the fact that it must weigh somewhere in the range of 150Lbs. It doesn't strain you overmuch and you could easily do it again.

"That's impressive if I'm reading this right," You hear Decala say. "His muscles are corded in layers of bundles that are much tighter than the norm for his species. It's reminiscent of the way Wookie muscles bind. There's no doubt he's very strong though."

Jorcos calls out, "We're raising the weight now. Prepare yourself."

You feel the bar get slightly heavier, then a lot heavier. It's starting to strain your muscles. Then it gets extremely heavy and you're afraid you'll have to drop it.

"We're at the limit." Decala calls out. " We're lowering it now."

The weight slowly dissipates and you're left holding a very light rod of metal. Jorcos waves you over and you walk to the console. You examine the scans of your muscles and note that the peak weight was about 400 lbs.

"It should be noted that your muscles are actually designed to coil and unleash their energy on impact. It's a very efficient system. Now we'll measure your stamina and speed."

Several panels on the floor rearrange themselves into a long treadmill. You stand on it and get ready to run.

You start running and before you know it, you're flying across the panels with barely an effort. You let the rhythm of you feet soothe you and before you know it you're hearing Jorcos yelling at you to stop.

"You've been running flat-out for an hour! What was that, about Fifteen miles per hour? You just kept going! You have absurd stamina!"

You grin and flex your limbs a little. That felt good, and you're barely winded.

"Take a minute to rest Kylan, we'll be doing some minor tests before we start with the Psionic evaluation." Decala says.

You crack your neck and grab some water.

It was going to be a long day.

>Let's keep moving.

(Two hours later...)

"...ninety-nine... one-hundred." You hear Decala call out.

You straighten your right arm and take you left off your back and place your palm against the floor. You're feeling slightly tired but that's to be expected after you do a hundred push-ups with just one hand.

"Okay!" Decala says brightly. "Now for the fun part!"

You stand up and make your way over to the station where she's standing. Several orbs float in the air around her with what appear to be weapon mounts on their exterior.

"These are training drones. The Jae-di use them to train their initiates. We'll be using them to evaluate your Extrasensual Perception abilities."

You nod. ESP. The so-called "Sixth Sense." It was something the Ascension Program had always been trying to foster whenever they found it. Accurate predictions of enemy movements, the ability to dodge bullets, or maybe even just a bad feeling about a certain course of action, it was all among the higher priorities for HiCom.

"Here," Jorcos says as he walks up behind you. "Take this." And he hands you a visor.

"It'll block your vision and your hearing so the only way you'll be able to dodge the lasers is through ESP. Good luck!" And Decala walks away.

You put the visor on...

You never had much of a talent for ESP. Sure you got some bad feelings but more often than not it was just gas. There were some truly talented people that you knew of though. There was one sniper back in Ascension who could always nab a target because she knew where and when it was going to be and was skilled enough to make the shot. You'd even seen her make a few when blind-folded.

With your sight and hearing obscured you couldn't sense anything about the world around you. But there was a steady pulsing, behind you and a little to the left. On a whim you moved away from the feeling and it dissipated. You felt it again to your front, sharper than before, and you immediately ducked. There it was again, to your right, and you moved again. It continued for a bit, this odd little dance, until you felt something sting you in the upper back. Then in the left calf. Then in the forehead. You get stung several more times before you pull the visor off. The drones power down and you take a moment to rub the red patches.

"That was well done Kylan!" Decala says. "Very fluid and precise."

"You had a 84% dodge rate." Jorcos calls out. "That's pretty good."

You nod as Decala walks over. "Now we'll be measuring your TK abilities. If you'll follow me?"

Telekinesis. It was something more suited to you, even though you weren't amazing at it. One of the other cadets had taken to floating around for a while before he got sick of the novelty. You walk over to a large metal crate and take note of the sensors on the outside.

"The box is designed to measure the efficiency of your TK abilities. THe sensors can pick up Psy-energy and calculate the amount of force being exerted as well. Go on, give it a try."

You reach out with your mind and grasp the crate, noting that it takes a good deal of effort. You lift and the crate rises. It's heavy, but sustainable.

"Okay, 56% efficacy. Let's see if you can move it around a little." Jorcos calls out.

You strains to the move the crate around the floor and it does follow you commands, but it's very tiring, even more so than all the physical activity that you just performed.

You set the crate down and bend over to take a deep breath.

"Alright!" You hear Decala cheer. "Now we just need to complete the overcharge testing and we're all set."

She's very cheery you note.

"Now, I know that your Federation generally implants psionic soldiers with cybernetic channelers." Decala says "Any implants you might have had were burned out in your fight with the Queen but they have a tendency to direct how energy flows throughout your body. What exactly was your specialty during your service with the Federation?"

Your psionic abilities weren't anything spectacular. As a result, you were assigned to the most common of the disciplines: Vanguard. You did well on the frontlines of the Corian Wars and were subsequently assigned to a Black Ops squad. Your missions were all classified and after a few years, you were reassigned to Force Recon.

Turning to Decala, you say," I was a Vanguard specialist. Psionic implants supplemented my abilities but a was better with a gun to be honest."

Decala nods while jotting something down on her wrist computer, "Okay, got it. We'll start with the Overcharge now. I'm going to warn you, if you try to clamp down on all the energy it'll likely fry your brains. Let it flow through you."

You aren't very reassured but when the chair slides up from under the floor you sit down anyways.

"Okay, we're going to start with a low charge, no more than 4%. See how it -feels." Jorcos says.

You place your arms in the sockets and tense slightly as the chair clamps down on them.

"Don't worry." Decala says cheerily. "You'll be just fine."

There's a faint thrumming sensation beneath you as you're suffused with psy-energy.

That little tendril of psychic energy latches onto you and is completely absorbed. Something shivers just under your skin and suddenly, you're ALIVE.

"What on... TURN THE CAPACITORS OFF! NOW!" You hear Decala scream.

But it's too late, that little tendril of energy is just a prelude to a torrent of raw force that pervades your entire being. The entire area is overrun with lightning before your vision is blinded with white. Dimly, you realize that the capacitor that Decala was talking about probably overloaded and this isn't very safe for your body. But that thought is swept aside by the vitality that pervades your being.

You can hear dim voices, far away,

"It's beautiful. Terrifyingly beautiful. I just want to reach out and touch it..." A voice that sounds like Decala's chimes in your head.

"Oh sweet, merciful, Creator Being, if you do exist, please don't let me die here..." A voice similar to Jorcos's mutters off in a corner.

This energy slowly subsides and suddenly, you're back. You are still lying in the overload chair, or what can better be described as its remnants.

You raise your pale, glowing hands and examine the lightning that courses between your fingers.

As you pull yourself up out of the wreckage of the chair, you recall a small scrap of doggerel that your drill Sergeant used to recite, years ago.

"He that kills himself to avoid misery, fears it,
And at the best shows but a bastard valor:
This life's a fort committed to my trust,
Which I must not yield up, till it be forced;
Nor will I: he's not valiant that dares die,
But he that boldly bears calamity."

The lines calmly leave your lips as you brush off the tattered remnants of the jumpsuit. Around you, black marks score the floor, walls and ceiling and liquid metal pools in several areas, slowly cooling.

"That. Was. AMAZING." exclaims a feminine voice from behind you. And suddenly you're being hugged from behind by Decala. You've just noticed she barely comes up to your shoulder.

"You HAVE to show us how you did that! That may have been the most amazing electrokinetic display I've seen in my life! Of course, it's the only electrokinetic display I've seen but that's, what a second, you're... not... wearing- EEP!"

And suddenly she's off you and sprinting away at a rate that would outpace even you.

You see movement out of the corner of your eye and quickly raise your hand to catch your clothes.

"Great dressed." Jorcos says with what appears to be amusement in his voice. "You'll want to see this."

"This calls for drinks for all of us, you know." You say as you pull your jeans on.

You think Jorcos is grinning, "I was going to grab something anyways to celebrate the fact that I wasn't fried by your crazy display of lightning right there. Just get over here, you might find this interesting."

"M'kay," you say as you pull your t-shirt on.

You walk over to the console Jorcos is standing at and take a look at the screen. You see a model of your nervous systems overlayed on your skeleton and what appears to be purple energy running down them. It doesn't make much sense to you.

"What do you think? Isn't it amazing?" Jorcos asks.

>What do you say/do?
>>
>>23512078
I'm not quite sure what I'm looking at beyond a medical readout of my nervous systems. They gave us basic medical education in Federation training but those only get fuzzier beyond the fundamentals. Besides, they never primed us on, err, post-human biology.

Besides, they never primed us on, err, "post-human" biology. Purple is good, I suppose?"

Jorcos smacks the forehead of his helmet. "Of course, my mistake. Now, I'm not an expert on the effects of Psy-energy but from what I can see it looks like the energy was rebounding between your nervous systems, effectively amplifying the energy."

"It's more than that." A voice behind you says. Decala walks to the console, pointedly avoiding looking at you. "Normally, it looks like only one of those nervous systems are in use at any one time and the other is used entirely for psionics. In order to create these massive pulses, the energy is effectively bounced off the primary and back into the secondary. It's almost exactly the same as what you see in Krogan Psychics except even more powerful. It may have something to do with the unique nature of your myelin sheaths but I wouldn't know much about that."

She turns away from the screen, "Anyways, you evaluation is done. The lab is slagged anyways so you can go now."
