Leaning against the wall of the pit to take the weight off your injured ankle, you watch as Miki tosses her poleaxe and pack across the mouth of the pit and springs over after them. The ceiling of the tunnel is too low for her to be able to fully clear the pit, but she's easily able to launch herself far enough to get most of her upper body on the lip of the pit and haul herself up. As you watch the twins rummaging in your pack for rope to fish you and Yukiho out, you hear Miki's voice echo from down the tunnel.

"There's a storage room here, nano! Ah~...it feels good to be able to stretch my legs!"

Realizing that it would probably be easier to get yourself and Yukiho out of the pit if you took advantage of the extra space from the side tunnel (and that it would likely be painful to try to clear the pit like Miki did with your wrenched ankle), you call up to the twins.

"Ami, Mami, on second thought, get everyone over the pit first, then put the rope down for us on the other side, ok?"

A pair of ponytailed heads poke out over the pit mouth, looking down at you. "Roger!"

After a few minutes of awkward waiting, Yukiho shrinking away from you on the far side of the pit and sniffling, a rope comes down.

Climbing up anything after a girl is never a good plan. Don't need any more shovels to the head.
>>
If she goes second, she can tie the rope around her waist and we can haul her up, conserving her energy for more TUNNELIN'

On the other hand, she IS wearing a skirt. A golden opportunity that, as appealing as it might be to our raging libidos, may in fact fuck things up further if she realizes our intentions.

I say we haul her up second.

Today, the 9th post rolling will be the one I count when I ask for a roll. 1d20, roll low for best results.

Also, since it didn't really come up in the last thread, I'll still be trying out the rerolls idea this time around. If you need a refresher, you guys have one reroll you can use to help mitigate the high variance of the dice method used. If you have a bad feeling about the result of a roll, you can call for a reroll. If someone calls for a reroll, everyone else votes for or against using it. If the vote is in favor of rerolling, I'll make a post doing the reroll myself. Whatever I roll is then the final result (even if it's worse than the original). Calling for a reroll and getting voted down does not use up your reroll.

While you feel bad just heading up while Yukiho sits there sobbing, you realize the potential implications of suggesting that the girl in the dress climb up before you and decide you'd rather not risk exacerbating the situation.

"Yukiho, I'm heading up first," you tell her. "Just come on up whenever you're ready, ok?"

Once out of the pit, you look around the tunnel floor for your sword (which you'd dropped when you fell in). Guessing the others might have moved it when crossing the pit, you head to the room branching off the right side of the tunnel where your lantern is sitting to ask Miki and Haruka.
Your question, however, is answered before you can even voice it. As you turn to enter the room, you find Haruka waiting for you at the door with your sword.

"Here's your sword, Producer! I made sure to pick it up for you!"

Thanking her, you take a look around the room. It's not terribly big by human standards, but for goblins it would be quite spacious. Though you need to stoop a little to avoid bumping your head, Haruka is able to stand up fairly comfortably. (Miki, for her part, is sprawled out in the middle of the floor.) Around the walls of the room are a number of shelves, boxes, and other containers, as well as a pile of goblin-sized digging tools. The shelves are mostly empty, so you set to work examining the contents of the boxes and other containers.

There's nothing to feel bad about. Being in a hole is Yukiho's natural state of existence. She'll quickly calm down and regain her composure.
>>
>>23474269
You find several kegs of water, which seem to be reasonably clean, and the boxes seem to mainly contain various foodstuffs. Haruka, following your lead and examining some of the other boxes, holds up a white amorphous lump, squeezing it gently in her hand. It looks to have a springy sort of consistency to it. "Producer, what's this?"

"What, you've never heard of goblin bread? You really are just a bunch of rookies, huh?"

"Goblin bread? This is bread?" Haruka eyes the lump in her hand suspiciously.

"Well, that's what we call it, anyway. It's probably not made from anything like what actual bread's made of, but it has a vague resemblance and seems to have the same general purpose for goblins."

"Is it safe for humans to eat?" She sniffs the goblin bread tentatively.

"Technically, yes, but I wouldn't try it unless you had no other option. The stuff tastes terrible."

You come to the last container in the room: a small wooden chest latched with a crude padlock. The hoop of the lock looks like pretty shoddy metal; you could probably break it open yourself without much difficulty.

Not wanting to risk setting off any hidden traps that may be on the chest or accidentally damaging whatever might be inside it, you leave it be until Ami and Mami return, Yukiho following behind them. It took them a bit longer than expected, but you suspect they may have been waiting for Yukiho to cool down. She certainly seems to be a bit more composed now, anyway.

"Hey, could one of you girls give me a hand with the lock on this chest?"

The twins look at each other, then back to you with exaggeratedly perplexed looks on their faces. "Nii-chan," Ami says, "what makes you think we know anything about opening locks?"
Mami chimes in, "Yeah, why would you assume we'd know how to do something shady like that? Just what sort of crooks do you take us for?"

You do your best to look authoritative and unimpressed, despite your stooped posture due to the low ceiling. "I've seen those funny tools you carry, and I know how you like to 'play' in the streets in your free time. It doesn't exactly take an archmage of divination to figure it out."

Throwing up their hands, the twins shake their heads in mock dejection. "Ah, you got us, Nii-chan!"
"Shoulda known we couldn't pull the wool over your eyes!"

"Just...open the chest."

Ami steps forward, slipping her tools from a pouch strapped to her leg. "Okeedokee, lemme have a look-see...ah, this is easy!"
In just a few moments of work, she pops the lock open with a click.

Peering over her shoulder as she opens the lid, you see that the chest contains a half-dozen small clay bottles about the size of a fist, tightly stoppered with wax and the space around them padded with straw.

"Hmm? Nii-chan, why d'ya think the goblins locked up these bottles?"

Taking one gingerly out of the chest, you weigh it in your palm. It feels somewhat light for its size; you suspect the pottery might be a bit on the thin side.

"Well, obviously they think it's valuable in some way. Knowing goblins, it could just be some good wine or something that they swiped off a traveler or trade caravan, but if that was it these would probably be with a chieftain's private stuff rather than in a general storeroom..."

Holding it to your ear, you shake the bottle gently to listen to the contents moving inside. It sounds like there's liquid in there, but not much room for it to slosh around. Probably full nearly all the way up to the stopper.

"No, I imagine these are probably some sort of alchemical concoction. The question is, what kind?"

HAVE MIKI LOOK AT IT

I bet these are the bombs.
>>
>>23474937
After pondering for a bit, you take the bottle in your hand and turn toward the tunnel.

"How about we toss one of these in that pit and see what happens?"
As you walk past Miki, sprawled in the middle of the floor, you gently nudge her with your boot. "Miki, I want you there for this."

Miki looks up, pouting. "Eeeh? How come?"

"I might need your wind magic to get rid of nasty fumes. Come on, up and at 'em."

She grumbles a little, but draws herself laboriously to her feet with a half-yawned "Okay~".

You head out into the tunnel, Miki in tow, and the others crowd in behind, curious to see what would happen. After taking up a position a good distance from the tunnel (and with your shield ready just to be safe), you chuck the bottle into the mouth of the pit.

You hear a crash of breaking pottery, followed shortly by whoosh of flames. Flilckering green and yellow light dances inside the pit, along with a faint wisp of curling smoke.

"Well, girls, let's make sure to thank the next goblins we see for this handy alchemical fire, ok?"

>There are five bottles left to distribute between the six of you. How do you split them up?
>>
>>23475446

>>
>>23475446

>>
>>23475446

>>
>>23475576
I go with this
>>
>>23475576

Actually, let producer take one only.

More likely than not,/tg/dice will fuck us up the butt.
>>
>>23475576
I like this actually.
>>
>>23475446
Returning to the storage room, you take the remaining five bottles out of the chest and hand two to each of the twins, keeping the last for yourself. "Ami, Mami, I think you two would probably make the best use of these, so you should hang on to them. But be careful with them, ok?"

The two snap you a smart salute. "Roger!"

After taking a few minutes for a quick water break and refilling your skins from the kegs, you announce to the group that it's time to head out.

Just a short distance down the tunnel is another branch, on the left side this time, and upon getting to it you see that it leads to another tunnel that winds off out of sight, with several additional branches along its length. This side tunnel is every bit as small as the main one.

>[] Explore side tunnel
>[] Ignore it and continue down the main tunnel to try to get to the caverns Yukiho said she sensed with her magic

If we take too long they might find out we're here and attack.
>>
>>23475757

Ask Yukiho if she can do a quick sense to see how deep the 2nd tunnel is.

Also ask her if she'd want to shift abit backwards instead in the column.

I don't like leaving the side tunnel like that. If its too deep, I say see if we can collapse it. Prevent a pincer attack. Or we send the twins on a quick scouting mission.

>>
>>23475757
Ignore it I think. I think they already know we're here by now maybe.

>>
>>23475757
You eye the side tunnel a bit, then continue on down the main tunnel. "We're ignoring that branch. No sense wasting time, we don't want to let the goblins prepare too many surprises for us."

After some time, you see what looks like the end of the tunnel at the edge of your lantern's light.

The sound of goblin footsteps approaching from down the tunnel behind you makes you freeze in your tracks -- and at just the right time, too, as you catch a glimpse of a thin wire glimmering in the lantern light in front of you, your shield just barely putting a hint of pressure on it. You scoot a few inches back (startling Yukiho slightly), just as Haruka calls to you from the rear of the party.

"Producer, there are goblins behind us! Goblins!"

"I can hear them, Haruka. But there's a tripwire right in front of us..."

You're in the process of trying to switch places with Ami and Mami in the middle of the group when the first goblins come into view around the bend.

The first wave of goblins crashes against Haruka's shield in a shrieking, gibbering pile of smelly bodies, flailing about with crude spears, daggers, and clubs. While Haruka bats them away with her mace, Miki reaches over and around to hack and stab with her poleaxe. Their attacks aren't terribly effective given the limited room to move, but they do manage to drop one goblin, causing the others to fall back briefly.

Keeping an eye on the goblins as they renew the attack, you turn back to the front to check on the tripwire situation. You see Ami leaning on Mami's back to look over her shoulder as the two examine the wire.

"There's a lot of tension on this wire, huh Ami?"
"Maybe a break-type?"
"Could be..."
"So we'll have to hold both sides to keep the tension steady and cut it, right?"
"But what about after it's cut? We can't hold the ends while everyone goes by, it's too cramped!"
"Pin 'em down?"
"With what"
"Um..."
"What if we could pull 'em all the way to the cavern and hold 'em there?"
"Think they'd stretch that far?"
"Uh...prob'ly not..."

Hearing their conversation, you fish in your pack for the hammer and a pair of pitons, which you pass to the twins. "Use the pitons to pin down the wire! And leave enough to tie something to, I have a plan!"

They set to work, Ami holding the wire near the sides while Mami snips it in the middle. Then, as Ami continues to hold the wire in place, Mami winds each end around a piton and drives it into the floor along the corners.

While all this is going on, the goblins continue to press against Haruka and Miki. The space for your party shrinks slowly as Haruka and Miki are forced to give ground, ever so slightly.

Ami carefully releases her hold on the wires and breathes a sigh of relief as the trap remains untriggered, but her announcement of success is drowned out by a scream from Haruka as a goblin manages to push its way around her shield and launches itself onto her. She falls backward into Miki, and several more goblins quickly pile on, attempting to pin the girls down.

As you move to start clearing the goblins away from Miki and Haruka, you shout back over your shoulder to...

>Tell the twins to:
>[] Tie your twine to the tripwire and run it to the cavern
>[] Just get to the cavern [forget about trying to trigger the trap on the goblins]

...Ami and Mami. "There's twine in my pack, tie it to the wire and run it to the cavern. We'll catch up."

As you scrape a handful of goblins off of Haruka and Miki with a slash of your sword, you continue your instructions. "Yukiho, use your magic to slow up these goblins. Buy us some time to get to the cavern, but don't stop them completely!"

A goblin perched on Miki's belly bares its needle-like teeth at you, snarling menacingly, and launches itself at you, dagger in hand. You intercept it on your shield and turn to slam it into the tunnel wall, grinding it into the stone with a visceral crunch as you harness the momentum of your pivot to skewer another goblin with your sword. Squeezing past Miki to get closer to the goblins pinning Haruka, you spare a quick glance back over your shoulder to see the twins busily working on tying your twine to the tripwire. Yukiho however, seems to be frozen, gripping her shovel with trembling fists but not producing any magic.

"Yukiho! Make with the magic!" You continue to press forward, cutting down goblins one after another.

You faintly hear her timidly answer, "R-right," but it doesn't look like much magic is going on. You spy a few faint fingers of yellow light advance along the ground toward the goblins, and what might be a slight twitching in the stone, but nothing significant.

Shortly after you get Haruka back upright, you hear one of the twins call from down the tunnel, "Ready!"

"Yukiho! Any day now!" You turn to find her choking back tears; she actually flinches from your gaze.

"Just...get to Ami and Mami," you grunt as yet another goblin hurls itself at your shield, earning a lost leg for its trouble.

Eyeing the considerable pile of goblin corpses that have accumulated as a combination of your party's combined efforts, you decide that will have to be impediment enough.

"Miki! Blow over as many of the goblins as you can! Haruka, if you can do it, make a big flash of light! Cast on my mark, then we'll make a break for the cavern!"

Another goblin, scrabbling to reach its spear around your shield. Another corpse for the pile. You feel yourself falling into that familiar rhythm of combat, despite the cramped space of the corridor. It's almost a shame to fall back now when you're on such a roll.

"Ready..."
A goblin attempts to climb over the top of your shield. You crush it against the ceiling and fling it back into its fellows.
"Now!"

You turn to retreat down the tunnel as wind roars behind you and the illumination suddenly grows substantially brighter. Snatching your lantern and pack as you go, you scoot down to the cavern as fast as the close quarters allow.
Agonizingly slowly, in other words. All things considered. You wonder if the goblins will catch up, but you know looking back will only slow you down further. All you can do is pray to every god that may listen that the spells and pile of bodies bought you enough of a head start.

Emerging into the cavern behind Miki and Haruka, you finally look back to see the goblins only just now making it to the tripwire.
You look to Ami, who is holding your twine expectantly.

"Pull it."

With a mighty grin on her face, she yanks hard on the cord, snapping the tripwire.

For a moment, nothing happens. And you wonder if the trap will in fact go off after all if the tension is released on only one side of the wire...

Your moment of doubt evaporates as a mighty boom splits the air, rocks raining from the ceiling of the tunnel as the explosive charges trigger a cave-in. In moments, the goblins are buried in the rubble, and the tunnel is sealed behind you.

Taking only a moment to savor the victory, you turn back to your party to examine the damage. Ami and Mami (not surprisingly), look completely fine, and are currently jumping up and down in celebration. Yukiho, though physically ok, is huddled on the ground, clutching her knees to her chest and quietly sobbing. Miki and Haruka look to have a number of superficial cuts and bruises, but nothing too serious.

"Well, that was certainly interesting," you remark. "How about a bit of a breather?"

And I think that's a good place to wrap up for tonight. As always, feedback is much appreciated, and I'd be happy to answer any questions anyone might have.

Also, do you guys think I should keep offering the rerolls? In two threads there's only been one motion for a reroll, and it was voted down. Not sure if it's really worth bothering with if it's going to come up so rarely.

That may be because nothing's gone catastrophically wrong for us yet.

It couldn't hurt to keep rerolls around. You know, just in case.
>>
>>23479583
The moment we get rid of rerolls is the moment we'll need them.

I'd rather have the option and not need it.
>>
>>23479583

Rerolls are a good idea. It's just we haven't had anything too dire happen to us yet. We don't wanna kick ourselves if we wasted it on like a slip and we roll a 20 while defending bomb diffusion or something.

Keep the option to reroll around a few more weeks at least, we haven't had a disaster like when we entered to tunnel again yet.
>>
>>23479583
We'll need to find another way out. We should be good for air, as the goblins were digging towards that direction. Assuming that was the rest of the digging party, any other forces won't know exactly what they're dealing with, although the explosion is bond to draw attention.
