The year is 2573, and you're currently traveling six hundred miles an hour over the surface of your homeworld.
You aren't impressed, though - this was an every day occurence. After the monorail hummed to a stop, the doors hissed open. You made your way out, looking up to the teal sky and white sun of Heaven's Jewel. Green mountains sat on the horizon, the terraforming process a bit too recent for large trees to have grown quite yet.
You step off of the road so the groundcars could pass, and crossed across your neighbor's yard to make your way home.
Sitting in the driveway was a silvered wolf, as he sat there staring at you. You stared at him, trying to determine if he was an uplift for some time, before you just went inside.

"Hey, hun. You see that dog outside? He's been there all day." 'Dad' said, as she ran water over the vegetables from her garden. "Your mother wanted to see you in the shop." She said and gave you a slight grin. "Or you could help me cut these up for the casserole."

"I think I'll go see what mom wants." You tell her, and wave as you make your way out back, to the large mechanic bay that was wedded to your house.

The bay was large, made of polished polycarbon plating, with hovering maintenance drones working on a groundcar. The control computer was nearby, clicking as it churned through its programming, and your mother was leaning over a bench, a simple spherical drone in her hands.
"Hey." She said, and slung the drone to you. You recognized it - Einstein, your ancient assistant droid. You look down at it for a moment, examining the basketball sized drone. "... What did you do?" You ask, squinting at her.
Your mother cackled. "Go on, turn him on. I got him a quantum router. He's connected to the extranet, now."
You hit the button, and it whirred on, the ion propulsion system in the bottom clicking to life.
"Warning." The sphere said. "Preferences and data have been lost. What is my name? What is your name?"

"My name is Heather. Username Arcturus." You say. "And yours is Einstein."
"Preferences locked, Heather." Einstein said, and with a thrum, the ion propulsion started up, making him hover in the air.

"Now, don't break him." Your mother said. "If you break the seal on his entanglement, I'll have to get another router delivered."
"I know." You say.
"How was school?" She asked, and turned to the maintenance control computer, aiming the drones to put the groundcar back together. You shrug, and she laughed at you.
"Don't worry, it gets better." She said.

"I did, yeah." She said. "He had a collar, though, so I don't think he's an uplift. Tried talking to him, and he didn't respond. Maybe he's just waiting for someone."
After some time helping your mother with the maintenance, you turn to your own personal project - a set of ion boots, of your own. You've always been rather technically minded, but even so, it took quite a bit of work to set them up just right to give you lift, even in the .9G of Heaven's Jewel.
"You think those are ready?" Your mother asked, and you nodded, slipping them on.

They whirred to life, and you instantly shot upward.

You sway back and forth, easing up on the throttle as you wobble this way and that, trying to recall the control scheme you'd set up a few weeks ago - something about leaning your feat forward like... this...

You slowed, and stopped ascending, your ion boots carefully keeping you level. You slowly drifted to the right, apparently leaning that way, and then you started leaning to the left to balance it out.

"Be careful!" your mother called up at you. You look down- you were floating above the drones and the groundcar. If you fell now, you'd smash straight through the windshield.

You grin and turn to Einstein, who dutifully followed you. "Einstein, tell me about uplifts."
"There are two types of uplifts." The drone replied, hovering behind you. "Late uplifts, who are adult animals - usually terran - given sapience via a very carefully applied transgene and mental implants, and Early uplifts, who are cubs slash hatchlings slash babies given a specific transgene and various growth hormones, taught as human beings are taught. By the Protected Uplift Constitution and the UPA, both early and late uplifts are given basic human rights."

>>
"Einstein, tell me about Heaven's Jewel."
"Heaven's jewel is a human world, terraformed in 2492 and colonized a decade later, in 2502. It has a population of five billion. Atmosphere is terran, with trace amounts of nontoxic minerals, shading the atmosphere. Gravity is point nine two terran. During the winter months, ice crystals form in the upper atmosphere, giving it a temporary ring with a tilt of fifteen degrees."
You nod, gleefully glad about Einstein's response time. Normally you had to go through the planet's internet to access the extranet, and that normally took a few minutes. But now that he was quantum entangled...

You lean forward on the thrusters, shooting forward-
And you were entirely unprepared when you wobbled out of control, causing the ion boots to think you meant to go max throttle.

Directly forward, toward the wall of the bay. Much too fast to avoid. Dizzied, you raise your palms to try and catch yourself.
And then... Something went through your body. Your limbs got tired, as if you'd exercized, and your arms went sore... and a massive dent tore through the wall of the bay, rippling away from you.

You shot through the hole in the wall, losing your balance and spinning to the grass.

You lay there, unhurt, your arms dead, and you heard panting. You see the wolf sitting there, tail wagging, mouth open.
He gave a soft woof, and you... heard a voice.
"So, it seems he *was* right. Damien is useful at the best of times." The wolf said. "My name is Max!"

You blink at him.
Your mother rushed out of the building, panicked, a medical kit in hand, wearing a headset.
"Oh, hello." Max said, woofing at your mother. "Heather is fine, no need to worry."

"You mean like... psychic stuff? In old fiction stories?"
"Precisely!" He responded.
"Einstein, tell me about Psijoniks."
"The UPA Psionic Institute was created in the year 2567, in an undisclosed location." Einstein said. "After it became evident that the late-uplift known as Max-227252 bore abnormal powers that broke several laws of thermodynamics, and could use them at will."
"That's me." Max said, and yawned, sitting down, tail wagging.
"He repeatedly claimed that there were more, and the institute was created in order to investigate and research 'psionic phenomena', as well as teach those with similar powers. A board of scientists man and teach at the facility. If you or those you know experience strange phenomena, clairvoyance, deja vu, or similar, please contact -"
"... As in telekinesis? And ESP?" You ask.

Max just grinned and panted. "Damien told me that someone here would learn about themselves. So I waited."
"For two days?" Your mother asked, apparently less shocked by the talking wolf than you were.
"Two days." He responded.

"You just used telekinesis to blow open that wall before you hit it. And then you created a telekinetic shield to absorb your landing." Max said, tail wagging. "You have a natural talent at it, it seems."
You gasp, and try to sit up.
"Don't be too energetic." The wolf said. "As far as we understand, the use of psionic power burns calories. Some of the time. Most of the time, actually."
"Why didn't you say something earlier?"
"I've... accidentally invited the wrong people to the institute before." He said, and actually *whined*. "I wanted to make sure."

"... Psionics isn't magic." Max said, and his voice sounded somewhat offended. "It has a grounding in science. We think. And there are no forces of darkness to battle. If there were, the UPA has the military for that. But for the school... essentially, yes, we'd like to whisk you away."
"Okay, hold on." You say, finally sitting up. "I have a few questions. Who the hell is Damien? Am I going to be taken away somewhere?"

Mousey girl with cropped black hair. And because we're seventeen, it's the future, and don't know any better, we have a strip of it died some gaudy neon color.

We've also got sunglasses that are kinda like the ones from Deus Ex: HR, only when they collapse they don't go into our head. They're a future material that becomes dense enough to fit into the removable metal things that stick to our head. Also the color and transparency of the glasses can be changed with a computer. We generally keep it opaque and the same color as our gaudy neon hair strip.

We prefer pants and shorts to dresses and skirts, though we aren't completely adverse to wearing them either.

"Faster than light travel." You say, uninterested in ancient history.
"Faster than light travel, or the Bubble drive, was discovered in the year 2125 on the Nagala homeworld. Humanity only discovered it during the first contact with the Nagala forty years later. It functions by forging and propelling positively and negatively charged Dark particles, which interact directly with space-time, in order to twist space around the ship, contracting space in front of it, and expanding space behind it." Einstein said. "The UPA, or United Planets Alliance, is the basic governmental structure that every civilized human, Nagala, and Mzlp[Click]hack[Buzz]tha planets adhere to. Created in 2200 between the united nations of earth alongside the hegemony of Nagala, both species entered the alliance. Several hundred years later, the Mzlp[Click]hack[Buzz]tha made motions to join. Since then, any additional sapient races throughout the galaxy are either too primitive or too antagonistic to join the UPA."

"Einstein, are there any aliens at the institute?" You ask.
"No data available." Einstein responded.
"Dad, have you ever seen an alien?"
"I saw a Centaur from a distance." She said. "A, uh, what did Einstein call them?"
"Mzulpklikhackzzzztha?" You attempt.
"That's why we call them centaurs." She added, and chuckled. "They're impressive. All big, and, uh... crabby, I guess? You need a kazoo to speak their language properly, though."
"Einstein, tell me about the important antagonistic sapient races." You say.
He was quiet for a time.
"Data is sparse." He said. "Ninety percent of the data I can find requires military clearance. Noted antagonistic races are 'Crows', and 'Demiurg', but additional information cannot be found."

"Einstein, help me pack for space!"
"Researching packing tutorials now." Einstein said, and the projector on the front of his face lit up.

Some time later, you sat down, huffing, the duffel bag sitting on your bed. You grab your wrist computer, slip it on, and finally... you grab your sunglasses. They collapse easily into hairclip form, and you put it on.
"Could you tell me how rare psionics are among alien races, Einstein?"
"I do not have permission to access the Institute computers." Einstein said.
"Tell me about Nagala, Crows, and Demiurg." You say, relaxing.
"Data on Crows and Demiurg cannot be found." He said. "Do you request historical data on Nagala, or biological data?"
"Heather?!" Your mother called up the stairs. "Max is back. Are you still packing? We can keep him busy for you."
More quietly, you hear her speak to someone next to her. "Are you sure you want dog food? We have other things, if you want..."

"Just a minute, mom! There's meat in the freezer!" You cry. "Both, Einstein, but reasonably abbreviated forms, please."
You go to your duffel bag and dig through it, making sure you had everything.
"Nagala are serpentine, mostly-boneless creatures. They have two arms, a head, and a tail. Their mouth and stomach are located in their tail, and they have no vocal ability at all. Instead they communicate through electrostatic touch, and changing the hue of their skin. They breathe through nostrils in the sides of their tail, and they bear vestigial spines on their back that open up into beetle-like wings." Einstein said. You finish packing, zip up the bag, and make your way downstairs.
"Humanity met the Nagala in the year 2165, after finding a stranded ship that had blindly used FTL. It was our first contact, and humanity learned how to use the Bubble Drive from them, in trade for our computer technology. It was soon revealed that, other than the Bubble Drive, Humanity was more advanced than the nagala. As a technocracy, they viewed those with the greatest technology and knowledge as superior, so nagala culture remains to view humanity in high esteem, and they've taken to using transgenes to make them appear more human, usually from the waist up. They see lips and tongues as the most curious part of humanity, and so transgenes to give them vestigial mouths on their faces are quite common." Einstein said. You hit the foot of the stairs and Max was there, gnawing on a bone.

"So, Max, I guess you've read my mind or whatever Psionic thing you can do, but I've made my choice."
His tail wagged, and you heard him speak despite making no noise.
"I actually have done no such thing. What choice are you making?"
You give your duffel bag a Look, and then he whined again, his ears falling to his sides. Then they perked up, and his tail started wagging.
"Glad to hear it! Er. See it. We can leave at any time. The shuttle is ready for us, to reach the station in orbit. From there, we can take a ship to the institute. It could take up to a day." He said.
"I just hope it won't be too harsh there, for me."
"The schooling isn't difficult." Max said. "I know most of it - even the parts my implants didn't augment - and I'm just a dog."
"Well... Bye mom. Bye dad." You say, and give the two of them hugs. "I'll miss you, and I'll be sure to call and visit."
"Your mother will end up owing me something if it turns out to be an asteroid." Dad said, and leered at her. Your cheeks burned. "So make sure to tell us if it is. Lie, even, if need be."
"It's a space station." Max said, gnawing on the bone.

"Are there aliens at the institute?"
"Just two. One Naga... though she's been heavily transgened, and Sarvesh. You'll like him." He said. "And then two uplifts, if you count myself. The rest are human. The aliens will be joining at about the same time as you, as things turn out."
"How is the food there?"
"Nowhere near as good as the food here." Max said. "But pretty good."

"Then take me to space, already." You say.
"You're ready?" He asked, and you nod. "Right, then!"
He hopped to his feet, and then... did a strange, canine bow to your parents. "This way, Heather."
"Sarvesh? Is that another alien race?"
"No, no, that's the name of one of the aliens." Max said. "He's a centaur."
"How many students will there be?" You ask.
"... I'd count them out on my fingers, but I don't have them." Max said, and yawned. "Six, including you. Right now, at least." He said.

Some time later, your duffel bag was sitting below your street, and you were strapped into your seat, the walls and floor padded around you. Next to you, Max said, with no buckles at all.
"I won't be needing them." He said, as the shuttle pilot signified the lift off.

The ion engines kicked in, whining, and next thing you knew, the windowless shuttle kicked forward, your seat shuddering as you tore out of the atmosphere. Your gut burbled uncomfortably, and soon after, you had an unnerving, uncomfortable feeling that you were entirely weightless.

Max stretched, and kicked off of his seat, floating through the air.
"We're in zero-G, now." He said. "Feel free to try to walk around."
"Can you show me a psionic trick?" You ask.
"I am." He said, and his tongue lolled, as he started moving from side to side. "Telekinesis is easy to maneuver in zero-G. Come on, climb on out. Just push yourself with your mind."

"I've already used telekinesis today." You say. "Are you sure I won't drop exhausted?"
"No, I'm not." He said.
You sigh, and unbuckle yourself. You accidentally bump against the seat, and go drifting forward, uncontrollably. You go spinning, drifting, and then... your limbs strain with ... Something, and you roll back 'upright'. your feet hovering. You urge yourself here and there, and drift that direction, as the strange power keeps you from drifting wildly. You feel slightly tired, as if you'd gone for a jog, but you weren't exhausted.
"So what are the classes I'll be taking like?" You ask. "Where am I staying? A dorm or something?"
"A dorm, yes." He said. "Classes are far and few between, because we only teach the minimum we're legally required to, but every few days we have a training session. the training sessions are the entire reason for the institute." He said. "The scientists are trying to learn just as much as we are."

Max chuckled. "I'm a dog. I don't know much. But nobody else does, either. We know that while the energy used in psionics tends to come from our bodies, there are times... well, we produce more energy than we burn, sometimes."
"What other stuff can psions do?"
"Every psion has a few abilities. Telepathy is the easiest one. It's how we're talking. An ability you probably never noticed you had is that... language doesn't matter to you. When you speak english, the person you're talking to gets a prodding to their language centers. Their own brain translates for you. Same thing if someone talks to you. Sarvesh doesn't speak english, for example, and Jilly doesn't even speak. But we call can understand them."
He rolled onto his back.
"Then there is Clairvoyance, which is simple. Intuition to an incredible level. Extra-sensory perception. Damien is splendid at that. Then, of course, there's telekinesis, which we're using now... and Manifestation. That's the most puzzling ability in our arsenal. We can... create things. From nothing. Summer is splendid at it."
Then he sighed, and stood on the ceiling as well.
"Those are the classifications the scientists have." He said. "But I have my own personal belief. That psionics can do *anything*."
>>

You cup your hands, and focus... and then a small, fluffy white kitten plush appears in your hands. You feel slightly more tired, but you'd expected to pass out completely.
Max cackled. "My, my, you do have a talent for this!"
He prodded it with his nose, and his nose went right through. Then he pouted.
"Not a good manifestation, though. Just an illusion."
"So there's Sarvesh, Jilly, Damien, and Summer. Who are the other two?"
"Well, there's also you, and Anne." He said. "Though I suppose I probably count, too."
He cracked his neck. "You know, I almost named myself Rover instead. I almost wish I went with that one, now."

The intercom crackled, and the pilot spoke up.
"We'll be arriving at the station soon. Please prepare your bags. If you cannot maneuver in zero-g, please use the ladder on the ceiling." As she said that, long ladder rungs slid out of the ceiling, apparently for you to hang onto.

"Well, if you say so..." He said, and you pat his head another few times.
"You can always change your name."
"Maybe." He responded.
You hang onto the ladder, ask Einstein to take your bag for you, and follow Max as he climbs out of the shuttle.
WELCOME TO HEAVEN'S JEWEL ORBITAL, the sign in front of you said, as you saw people drifting by, some with small ion packs, some with magnetic boots and walking, as the crowded station suddenly split.
In the center of the gap of people stood... a being, in magnetic boots.

A bulky creature, nearly ten feet tall with four thick, burned umber carapaced legs, splayed laterally out of the sides of his saucer-shaped abdomen. It looked almost like a crab, from the waist-down, but where the crab's head and pincers should be... a torso sat. His thorax looked almost like a powerfully built human torso, with thick carapace plates replacing where the muscles would be, and with incredibly broad shoulders. On his thorax he had two massive bulky arms, ending in pincers, though one was cybernetic, complete with hydraulic pipes hanging free from the polycarbon skeleton. On his belly, sticking from the border between abdomen and thorax, two long, spindly arms sat. Currently, they were folded up against his chest, reminding you of a praying mantis.
>Field too long!
>>
>>23471425
"Max is a good name. You should keep it. Now let's get our bags."
As I say that I use the ladder for energy conservation to get to my bag.
>>
>>23471576

His head... was not very humanlike. It was a squat carapace dome, with a lot of 'extra' shell stretching downward from the base of his skull. A dozen mandibles clicked and curled under his chin as he eyed you with eerily human eyes, W-shaped pupils staring into you. Two leathery flaps on the sides of his cheeks flapped open as he breathed.

You hear him screech and click, before buzzing and saying something that sounds like 'balewbulahzzzzclick'.
"Hello." He said, as your brain translates his voice.
"Sarvesh! Hello!" Max said.

One of Sarvesh's scrawny, spindly hands, probably the most delicate part of his body... patted you carefully on the head. You see only three fingers on it, almost as small as his mandibles.
Then he patted Max.
"Hello." He said again.
"Sarvesh, this is Heather. Heather, this is Sarvesh." Max said. Sarvesh reached down with the other delicate, lower arm, and patted Max as well.
"Hello." Sarvesh said a third time.
"How are you dealing with the extra pressure?" Max asked him, and started walking. You followed, drifting along, while Sarvesh's heavy magnetic boots clanked forward.
"I just breathe more softly than normal." Sarvesh said. "Not a problem."
"I hoped it wouldn't be." Max said.
"I can tell you're quite curious. The curiosity is oozing off of you." Sarvesh said, suddenly, as the two of you walked. His entire thorax turned to you, as his abdomen and legs continued walking straight. "Please, ask."

"Would you mind if I took a look at your cybernetic pincer?"
"Go ahead." He said, and the massive muscled arm hissed as he raised it toward you. You investigated it... and you were surprised. It was partially built from a military exoskeleton, with truly incredible amounts of hydraulics in it, and a nuclear core for power.
"What happened to it?"
"I lost it when my brother tore it off during our wargame." He said. "I didn't want to molt quite yet, so I had this added. My tribe was not fond of it.
"What is your normal diet?" You ask.
"... I like fish." He said.
"Your favorite color?"
He said a word that didn't make sense, and your head pounded. " - but it's out of your sight range. Perhaps when I get better at telepathy, I can show you." He said.
"Did you make those boots yourself?"
"No, I purchased them."

"Where are you from?"
"My homeworld is named Kzzzlclick." He said, his voice buzzing like a kazoo. "The UPA calls it Centaur Three Oh Seven, since their human components cannot vocalize it."
"How many limbs do you have?"
"Eight." He said. "If you count the cybernetic arm as one. Well, nine, if you count genitals. Four legs, two lower arms, two upper arms."
"How thick is your carapace?"
He showed you the tip of his pincer. "This thick." He said, and you estimate it as three inches or so.
"How old are you?" You ask.
"Not a valid question." He said. "I do not measure my age in years, so I've lost count. I have, however, gone through three moults. I'm still quite young. Past the age of sexual maturity, but before adulthood."
"How do you sleep?"
"By closing my eyes, twisting my lower arms underneath my body, and squatting down."
"What do those flaps on the sides of your cheeks do?"
"They're similar to your nose. I use them to breathe."
"Are you carnivorous? Omnivorous?"

"Moulting is painful." He said. "It makes you older, and closer to death, though it regenerates my body entirely. Any wounds will vanish."
"What's your extranet phone number?"
He blinked again, his eyes closed for a long, slow time.
"We will not be able to communicate vocally." He said. "Since I'm speaking my native tongue. Telepathy doesn't work at a distance. We can, however, send one another text messages."

"Do you have any questions about humans?"

He tilted his head for some time, thinking and walking in silence.
"This is the ship's docking port." Max said, suddenly, stopping at a large, thick doorway. "It has a small gravity generator area, so that might be more comfortable for you."
The three of you walked into a large helm, with a pilot sitting at the cockpit, and a door to the back.
"We can set off any time." Max said.
"How long will it take us to get to the academy?" You ask.
"A day or so." Max said. "We'll have to sleep aboard. Go in the back, and I'll have them kick the generators on."

Some time later, you sat on a simple couch, Sarvesh sitting on the carpet in front of you. Below your feet, you knew, there were tens of thousands of small gravitoelectromagnetic cylinders, spinning in perfect vacuum with enough power to generate 0.7 Gees. enough to sit comfortably.
"What is your normal diet?" Sarvesh suddenly asked. "Favorite food? Favorite color? How old are you? Are you female? Tell me of your homeworld. Tell me of your tribe."

>Quantum entanglement
There are, throughout UPA space, great extranet nodes floating about. They carry the necessary tools to entangle two particles, and to keep them separated. They keep one, of every pair, connecting to each other, while the other set of each pair is sold as a router. Quantum routers contain a particle via SCIENCE, something about magnetism. If the router gets damaged, containment is lost, entanglement gets unentangled, and you have to go pay for another router.

>>23473298
You have a thousand dollars in savings from odd jobs, but it's soon to not matter when you join the institute.

>>23473342
Not unheard of for the upper-middle class, rather common for the high class, rare for middle class, and hardly ever for anything lower class than that. But that's only for humanity.
Planetary economies are usually rather isolated, due to their natures as entire planets. They're big enough that there's usually a consumer who wants something on the same continent, which is a lot easier to deliver to.

>>23473352

I would like to know more about large-scale ground combat and how it is handled. What is the force composition in the future? Lots of infantry and no armor? Heavy reliance upon aerospace?
>>
>>23474009
I... don't understand.
>>
>>23474035
Actually, there's only little warfare here in the future. Most of it takes place in space, with ship combat against pirates, utilizing laser weaponry to slag through armor and enemy weapons, missiles for longrange, and specialized shuttle boarding parties to take a ship entirely. Kinetic spreadshot in order to keep away shuttles. Ground-scale combat is similar to how it is in the present, I suppose. I don't actually expect to get very far into 2573-era military, though.
>>
>>23474150
Are ship-to-ship missile warheads standard nuclear shaped charges or do they use antimatter?
>>
>>23474150
I would think ground warfare isn't much of a thing what with precision orbital bombardment and such.
>>
>>23474223
Orbital bombardment is great, it's good for taking people out, but you still need ground forces to take and hold an area, but orbital superiority would probably replace air superiority in many ways.
>>
>>23474182
Nuclear charges, though kinetic spreadshot - which is basically thousands of meter-long needles shot out of a space cannon - can tear the missiles up. The only thing kinetic spreadshot has trouble with is ammunition problems that it can't pierce most ship hulls, and if you get the timing wrong, it wouldn't be hard for the missiles or shuttles to dodge it.

>>23474223
UPA actually makes a point of staying out of single-planet engagements, usually during revolutions and the like (and they definitely stay out of centaur wargames) but they *do* forbid orbital bombardment.
>>
>>23474242
Those "take and hold" troops probably won't be fighting anything more than the occasional insurgents, since a large force would be wiped out by micro-missiles and laser blasts dropped from orbit.
Imagine if you had an AC-130 above you at all times, and also, it can vaporize buildings.
>>
>>23474279
What is your policy on stealth in space?
>>
>>23474452
Without transponders, you need to use radar to see another ship, which can be difficult if it's constructed in a way to deflect it away. Internal gyroscopes go all wibbly if someone bubble drives past or near you, though, so they'll usually be able to tell if you ran - though they won't know if that was you running, or your cavalry arrive.

Possible with metamaterials and staying still long enough, but you still give off heat. Not to mention that the metamaterials that do currently exist don't quite work on infrared or ultraviolet wavelengths, so Centaur (who can see every color ever) and Nagala (who can sense electromagnetic force) can still sense you.
>>23474558
It is. It's incredibly inert. I really haven't put much thought into it, but ionized phaeron gas imparts significantly more force than any other conventional ion propellants.
