I need some ideas for original Victorian-era boogeyman-esque monsters that prey on children. Any suggestions?
>>
Jack's less catchily but more honestly named pedophilic brother, Johnathan The Child Prostitute Murderer
>>
Mr. Sweeps. A demonic chimney sweep who goes about at night, leaping from rooftop to rooftop. Children who play in soot and dirt are abducted by him. Their parents wake in the morning to find the child's bed blackened with soot, big black footprints leading from the bedroom to the fireplace, a cold draft coming down through the open flues.
>>
The Story of the Thumb-Sucker. The tailor cuts off the little boy's thumbs after his mother warned him not to. It's from "Struwwelpeter" which was published in 1845.

>inb4 that was on Family Guy
>>
Ol' Jackhead. A lanky giant with a wooden block for a head. A crude face is carved/painted on the block.
>>
Nicky Knocks. A beast who raps on doors late at night, snatching away and children who stay up past their bedtime with his monstrous hands.
>>
>>23348714

Note the "original" in the OP. The goal is to create entirely new monsters that have the same feel and aesthetic of traditional nursery bogies.
>>
Penny Pinchfingers. She's a creepy hag, who looks like a long-limbed, grey-skinned homeless woman built one size too large. She lurks in doorways and alleys. children who don't follow their parents advice to not talk to strangers will meet her, and get "pinched." She can duck into any alcove or opening along the streets and come out of another, many blocks away.
>>
>>23348759
English is my second language. Took original as in the original stories. My bad.
>>
>>23348828

It's cool. At least you know what we're shooting for.
>>
>>23348575
>Johnathan The Child Prostitute Murderer

What does he do?
>>
Jack Crackback. If you step on cracks on the sidewalks, he finds you and snaps your spine.
>>
Some kind of nordic snow elf who steals children's ears, noses and fingers during the winter.
>>
>>23348575
>>23348864
Okay good, I was worried I was the only one confused about what he does.
>>
>>23348864
He kills abstinent old women.
>>
>>23348881

Queen Frost. Children can see her looking in through the windows on winter nights, eying the warmth of the fire and the candle with hungry eyes. However, so long as you are indoors and its warm, she can't hurt you.
>>
>>23348526
Young Sy Snow.

He's a nearly ethereal creature, made out of fresh snow and black eyes. His features are sharp and his size changes from a normal man to something bigger.

He wants heat, he feels so cold, so he grabs children and suffocate them in his embrace. He'll find that it's not enough and he'll go to the next child, trying to find some warmth.
>>
Down dark alleys, do not venture
'Cause to Ballo you might be indentured
He ropes your hands and cages your head
Tells all the naughty things you've said
Makes you sleep down in the mire
Pick coal from the streets to stoke his fire
And when you've worked off your naughty deed
He'll tell you 'it's time, there's rats to feed'
>>
The Lithe Lacer.

Kiddies don't tie their shoes? Better watch out, or the Lithe Lacer with get you. He comes, quickly out of the darkness, and scoops up those untied laces, and lithely skips away just as fast has he appeared, dragging you by your shoe laces.

Back in his lair, he ties you from his hanging bar by those laces. He then pokes at your dangling, upside down body with his meat forks until your full of holes.
>>
>>23349020

I'd like it better if you die of cranial injuries and lacerations as he intentionally drags you over every bump and bramble.
>>
The Strangemen only ever appear in crowds, snatching those who become lost and remind them of the people they once were, turning those they nab into more Strangemen.
>>
>>23349069

You know, I never ever thought about that when writing it. I thought of this creepy image of this guy tying you up by your shoe laces, but Jesus fuck I missed the obvious.
>>
The Coughman

Whenever the thick, pea-soup fogs comes over the waters, fed by the factories, the Coughman walks amongst the murk. Children who stay out get a cough, and as they walk and hack they hear an odd echo to their own coughing. It means the Coughman is following them, and if they don't get home soon they'll start coughing up blood and, eventually, their own lungs, which will be black and diseased.
>>
>>23349069
>>23349117

Maybe he ties the shoelaces to passing carriages and trains and sends you for a ride.
>>
The Trackman: He can only walk on other people's footprints, so if you dont want him to gobble you up you should take off your shoes when you come in the house.

Drowsy-Delan: He is woken up by silence and put to sleep by noise, also he lives under your bed. So always say your prayers before bed to make sure he is fast asleep, and dont complain about daddy snoring (he is doing it for your own safety)
>>
>>23349147

That could be for days when he's feeling lazy not really up for skipping. Just a quick "tie by" to a passing carriage and "So, long, Magoo!"

I mean, let's face it. Even boogeymen have down days.
>>
scrumps: tiny mite-sized monsters that live on the floor, if they eat the food you drop they can grow big enough to eat you, so always clean up after yourself.
>>
this thread is awesome! many of these are VERY clever and i will be using that queen frost one in a setting now.
>>
>>23349176

I love the snoring bit.
>>
Somewhat related.

My girlfriend works at an after-school program for young children and she sometimes hears some strange stories.

One of the weirder ones was a young girl who told her that she had to eat the crust of her bread. Why? Nutritional value? Not wasting food?

Nope.

She told her that every crust she didn't eat, there was a "crust-man" that lived in the trash that would add the crust to himself and get bigger.

I like to imagine that this crust man is the gingerbread man's older, darker brother. What are his motives? No one knows!
>>
I am stealing everything in this thread, guys. You guys rule.
>>
The Spider Boys.

Spindly goblin-like creatures, they lurk in hidden places during the day. At night they crawl out, and any lights near them dim and go out. If a child is out after dark, the Spider Boys follow him in the dark, whispering threats and curses. Eventually, one of them hops on the child's back, latching on with grasping claws and surprising strength. He croons in the child's ear as, over the course of the night, the Spider Boy steadily grows heavier and heavier. If the child becomes exhausted and can't go on, eventually the weight will crush him. the only hope is that if you can last til sun-up, which causes the Spider Boys to disappear.
>>
pickety-percival: eats children, hates yucky veggies. So if you dont want him to eat you, eat as much of the green stuff as you can! Its your only hope!
>>
Never chase ragged cats
whose fur is full of gnats
been sent by a crone
at nights they will groan
begging for kisses and pats

Do not give milk or cream
they'll like you, so it'll seem
but when the sun's down
that crone will come 'round
and no one will hear you scream
>>
Guys

What if

What if

Guys

What if we

What if we make a game based on these creatures? Think The Gashleycrumb Tinies meets Hunter?
>>
>>23349471
I was thinking more of a brother's Grim / CoC / Delta green kinda thing.

I think the best setting for these kind of creatures would be a modern setting, where nobody would believe they existed andso they would have their heyday just picking kids off the streets of major cities left and right.

"At first we were all offended that the age of reason left us all behind, but then people stopped expecting us, stopped hunting us, and stopped teaching their children our weaknesses that their ancestors had taken centuries to work out"
>>
Ragged Tom.

During the day you may see many alley cats. They're missing eyes, their ears are torn, their fur is mangy. They cluster in the dark corners of the city, always watching. If you pet them, or feed them, they take a notice to you, and begin to follow you. At night, they change.

They grow into something a bit like a man, but not quite there. They stalk you, eyes gleaming, yowling and hissing from the shadows. You catch glimpses of them, in their patched and tattered clothes, still with their scars and their mangy fur, with their teeth and their claws. By morning, there will be nothing left of you but scraps of cloth and a red stain on the cobblestones.

Don't pet the strays, or Ragged Tom and his family might follow you home.
>>
>>23349541

I was seeing more of a bunch of kids forming a Boogeyman club in Victorian England and helping fight against the spookiest, but god damn, your quote sold me.
>>
>>23349541
>>23349471
i'm already working on it. i wanna adapt it from d20 but i dont want the game to have much combat. its going to be more of a survival horror game

The question is, what kind of organization would protect us against such creatures? How would they form what kind of people would they recruit?
>>
>>23349609

Might you have a website or some way of following your progress so I know where I can throw my money?

Gravity Falls, The Game?
Maybe instead of going full CoC, how about Monsters and Other Childish Things?
>>
The search in the basement for the missing child has been fruitless, and the atmosphere is unnerving you. You glance at a large, open cupboard under the stairs, one of its doors hanging open.

Blink.

The cupboard door opens on to a dark room, the walls splattered with gore. In the center is a hideous, pale creature sitting on a pile of bones, its long arms wrapped around its equally long legs, its eyes staring at you from under the rivulets of blood running down its mangled face.

Blink.

The cupboard is empty. There is a creak as the door moves slightly, as if something had brushed against it. You rush over but find nothing inside except dust. You begin to dismiss the vision as being due to stress and an overactive imagination. Just as you are about to draw away you stop. On the floor right in front of the open cupboard are two drops of dark, dried blood.

>Rawhead and Bloody Bones
>Steals naughty children from their homes,
>Takes them to his dirty den,
>And they are never seen again
>>
>>23349653
It would be an organization of nothing but comforting grandparents; a snuggly stuffed rabbit in the dark for all mankind!
>>
>>23349653

An organization formed in secret by witnesses and survivors. They pooled together after meeting each other over various message boards. They didn't realize how many others were out there. Now they pool their resources together to save the world's children from the things that go bump in the night.
>>
>>23348936
Unless the lights go out or the fire dies.

Then there isn't a locked door or window on Earth she can't open to get to you. Children know instinctively that she can't get to you if you hide under blankets, press yourself flat, and don't move a muscle.

She usually ignores adults, but when she notices...well...it's not so easy to hide when you're all grown up.
>>
>>23349653
it's not adults that do anything, it's up to the children to defeat these awful creatures. The only reason your parents tell you all these things is because they had to deal with these beings during their childhood.
When they grew up, they hid away the memories, but they remember enough to half-seriously warn their own children.
>>
>>23349655
no, because i just started. right now. because of this thread.

and this quote:
>>23349541
>>
>>23349704
"Fucking interdimensional bullshit. Jenkins, break out the spacial scanner."
>>
>>23349716

Hmm, too simple. Needs more flavor. I mean, Delta Green has that whole rogue FBI/CIA/Men in Black vibe to it. We need a theme, or some trappings to make this work.
>>
>>23349748

That only works if we're doing steampunk. If this is more realistic Victorian England, you're just gonna have to rely on your wits, whatever tools you can find/buy, and what scraps of ancient lore you can piece together.
>>
>>23349290
A spirit of revenge/justice/hate produced by wasted food?
>>
>>23349779
How might a more realistic Victorian Era investigator open up holes into a monster's pocket dimension?
>>
Lingo:

Darkies: monsters which keep to the darkness, and should you follow them there you're pretty much screwed

Crawler: Can walk on walls or ceilings

Snatcher: Steals small children, adults are outside of its MO unless it is otherwise threatened

Shifter: Looks mostly human, usually dressed in rags tho, not too hard to spot in modern day
>>
>>23349758

I'm really wracking my brain here, and I really think the PCs need to be kids. I mean, if they're not, this really is just CoC/Hunter Boogeyman Edition. The difference here is that we're children. No one believes us that these things actually are real. Like >>23349723 said. They grew up. They forgot. These words are just a distant memory that they're repressing.
>>
>>23349817

He wouldn't. Raw Head's ridden chamber exists simultaneously in all basements, under all stairs, at the same time. He can just shift where the opening is. You have to be in the right place at the right time, figure out a pattern of where he's attacking.

Alternatively, you look up an old book detailing the nature of this creature, and find an incantation that will let you enter his realm. Alternatively alternatively, you go to the crossroads and make a deal with Old Scratch to help you find the wayward child, and he takes you to Rawhead and you have to figure out the rest.
>>
>>23349817
>Magnets
>Nonsense passages from fairy tales
>Knowing the creature or its victim's true name
>Special candle/lantern lens
>Baiting the monster into the open
>>
>>23349873

Hobs. Positive houshold spirits, related to the boogeymen. If a home has a hob, they'll try to protect it from an invading bogeyman. If the bogeyman is too powerful, they'll try to indirectly warn the family.

If you ever see a mushroom growing in a moldy basement remember it well, for a drop of milk and honey upon its cap will open the door to Oberon's throne room. The Hidden King is wise but his counsel does not come free, so be prepared with a bottle of sherry or port as payment, lest he trap you there and keep you as his plaything forever.
>>
>>23349873

Bogeys: Relatively harmless monsters, unless you're a very small child.

Bugbears: Big, dangerous monsters, but not that intelligent.

Hags: Very dangerous subset of monster, quite cunning, but not very tough.
>>
>>23349986
And remember standard etiquette for dealing with the fey. Accept no gifts, promise no favors, and do not eat or drink anything offered to you.

>>
dont really know how i am going to work out a combat system with this though. if i do at all
>>
>>23350072

Well, you said d20, and it's all open source. Just refluff a few names.
>>
>>23350072

I should think the main goal isn't combat, but to A) finding the monster's lair and B) saving the missing children. For the major monsters, combat is a REALLY bad idea.

If combat does come up, all of them should have a weakness to one or two things. Sunlight, cold iron, silver, the color red... These things can ward them off or injure them. Everything else they can avoid or shrug off. Of course, you don't KNOW what they're weak to at the start. You have to research them, look it up, piece together the evidence.

Really, this is more of a myster-solving setting than a hack'n'slash.
>>
>>23350158

I should note, this weakness issue only applies to normal and powerful monsters. Lesser bogies, like goblins and trows and other such creatures are minor annoyances, mischief spirits. They can only really threaten small children, though if there's a lot of them and they're angry they could threaten adults as well.

Remember, boys and girls, to have good manners, and always shake hands when you're introduced to someone new. If you don't, word might make it to Henrietta Hormell.

Once a sweet old lady, now driven into madness, she now sneaks into the rooms of bad mannered children at night, to suck the meat off the hands of children who don't know their proper how do you do's.

I just meant in terms of not having classes. Each character gets a certain number of "points" each level that they can use to buy different skills and abilities, or to improve existing ones. Deadwood and 7th Sea are both good examples. It allows players to tailor their characters a little more, and removes the constrictions of a class system.

And I think it'd work for this game, since you might want a character who can not only know how to look up info on the monsters, but can also take care of himself in a fight.

i'm gonna start working on this. i will have a rough draft hopefully next weekend. i plan to pour my soul and all of my energy into this. so if you are interested, please feel free to email me. it probably wont be that fantastic but i will likely try to run a TS/skype game after i get a rough draft. after the first play test i will email everyone who is interested the rough draft. i will want to hear what each of you want to say, bad, really bad, and good. even if you think i should quit and never try again, i will want to hear it.

/tg/ its time to write a game.

So I got an idea for another one, but I can't think of a name.

Better keep those nails trim and neat, lest XXXX think of you her dead husband. Poor old XXXX. Her and her husband had such long, sharp finger nails. They loved them so, as they loved each other.

Keep those nails trim and neat, lest she see your hands and unkempt nails sticking out of your covers as you sleep at night while she passes your bedroom window. She'll creep into your room and throw off your covers, hoping to find her husband. Imagine her disappointment when she only finds you.

In her anger and loss, she'll take those long, sharp nails, and skin you there, while you sleep. She might take just a little, just a small flake of skin, or she might skin you whole. You don't know, but do you want to take that risk?

So keep those nails trim and neat, lest XXXX think of you her dead husband....

Take some inspiration from Gilles de Rais even if it might be stupid propaganda, and Elizabeth Bathory. Some pretty fucked up shit, could probably make for some decent monster design.

Whelp, if we have a Skype game to test this, this might get weird.

Also, just a random fun fact. Bathory never actually bathed in her victims' blood. It was a detail that was added in the 1800s to make her tale more scintillating, as if it needed anything added.
>>
What happens in the little villages with children shirk their chores? Granny Faggot comes along to play a little game. She'll sit on you're chest while you sleep, so you can't scream or run away. Then she'll beat your little cheeks with kindling sticks until the bright of day.

Either divine magic that's veeery subtle, and only in actually 'blessed' individuals, ala some of the later Castlevania games, or it's actually the same as the darker magic but re-directed into barriers and protection, ala classic witchcraft - A lot of the more well-known 'dark' witchcraft was blessing of protection literally flipped upside down into curses. Or do both, and make it so noone can tell the difference, pc's have to decide if it's evil, good, or potentially good with absolutely no evidence whatsoever. See if they get into any well-intentioned witchhunts.

Do you like to play with matches? Do you find yourself drawn, like a moth, to the flame? Well that's the stuff of miscreants and neerdowells. And bad little boys like that get visited by The Flint Flicker.

He too loves the flame, but he likes to play a special game with bad little boys that like to start fires. He grabs your head in his massive hands and scrubs your face against a scratch pad. He scrubs and scrubs and scrubs, as if your face was a filthy pot and he needs to clean it.

But that's not all. Oh no! He's not done yet. We told you he's drawn to the flame, and sure enough, he'll light a match. And that sore, scrubbed, red mess on your face? What better place to hold his flames to. He squeals with glee as your flesh blackens in small places. The smell of burnt flesh is like that of freshly bakes cookies to the Flint Flicker.

So don't play with matches, and never ever start fires, lest the Flint Flicker fancy your work.

Little boys who smoke are visited by tiny K'nict Knakkers. He smells the tobacco smoke on their bodies and follows them and when they aren't looking he breathes more smoke onto them. This smoke lures female K'nict Knakkers to them who lay their eggs into their lungs. If you stop smoking, the K'nict Knakker eggs in your lungs hatch and leave the next time you cough. If you keep smoking, however, the K'nict Knakkers hatch and grow larger in your lungs feeding off the smoke and dying tissue in your lungs. Once they fully mature, they move to your brain and force you to keep smoking until you die.

And of course, she doesn't remember/believe in the monster herself, we are just naturally ingrained to protect our kin from these creatures that affected us in the past.

Or if you want the adults affected as kids to remember then they might be able to help the kids. They might just not be able to see the monsters. Adult believers should have handicaps.

Going along the ideas of the Halloween masks. If you dress up or pretend to be someone or something, you get a little bit of their powers.

i.e. If you dress up a fireman, then you get a slight resistance to heat.

Isn't Little Fears all about running games with adults not remembering monsters and kids dealing with all of the horrible, life ruining shit? From demons that want to peel your face and wear it to ones that will possess your parents and make them rape you, it sort of runs the gamut on monster types. I'm sure you could add in all you wanted, at that.

You basically play as little children who have to survive the horrors of the 'closet world', an alternate dimension where all the monsters live. The bogeyman, Baba Yaga, etc. Seven demon princes who exemplify the seven sins, the closet king who stands above them all, and their myriad followers. The one that creeps me out the most is the one who portrays envy. He was created as an adult and missed out on childhood, so he kidnaps children and makes him tell them all about their lives and what they do for fun, etc. Then he rips their faces off and adds them to his collection, so he can wear their face and pretend to enjoy his fake childhood memories.

Calvin's animal tulpa. His imagination has become so powerful he's able to manifest a tiger as a companion and ally that is able to affect the supernatural. His imagination has grown to a point where it created another supernatural being.

So different ways imagination can manifest?

Stuffed animal familiars, costume/dress-up classes, daydreaming into another plane of existence (which could be used to change settings), imaginary friends.

Just straight believing that te specific monster doesn't exist. You lose your powers of imagination either permanently or temporary. Used in last case scenarios.

Kinda. Maybe not so powerful. Not early or mid game at least. I would imagine Calvin as a VERY powerful character in this game. Like end game stuff. But I can see low level stuff being like you said, suffed animals that give bonuses to certain attributes or abilities, imaginary friends that can temporarily affect the real world, or believing something collectively thus willing it, very briefly and still not terribly powerfully, into existence.

Great thread.

If you haven't already, OP go check out Courtney Crumrin and Gaiman's Neverwhere novel. If memory serves Crumrin feature Bloodybones Rawhead.

For an investigator game how about two tiers that combine some of the previous ideas in this thread:

1) Child Tier - Re: Monsters and other childish things the players are a group of kids (before the Age Of Reason, which is 7 according to the Catholics) who investigate / fight the bogie men. Of particular interest to child tier is protecting benign Fae, rescuing children over the age of reason who are being worried by a bogiemen and cannot see them.

2) Adult Tier - Players are Changlings from Changeling the Lost. They have been kidnapped and transformed by the Gentry and they formed a loose Delta Green like organization to stamp out the predator Fae in the Victorian age. So their goal is to exterminate the bogiemen and protect the child tier BUT they must do so in such a way that no evidence of the supernatural is seen, particularly by children as children's dreams/nightmares are the embronic stuff of the Fae. The Changelings have magic, and sometimes it is their only weapon against the bogiemen, but every time they use it the Doors of Reality loosen and somewhere the Fae are strengthened. Often the Changelings must do their best to masquerade as the bum on the street, the coal miner or the boring math teacher.

If you wanted to go -really- dark maybe there is a faction of radical changelings that would rather kill troublesome kids than allow bogiemen to become stronger. A modest proposal indeed.

I just have images of seven year olds concentrating and scrawling calculus equations on the wall because the human mind's pressure to give logic a linguistic form wards off the bogiemen, as they are creatures of dreams.

Or perhaps the last tears of an alcoholic or the blackened lung of a coal miner would kill these bogiemen, because these are items that embody adult realities and truly broken dreams.

hello /tg/ I want your advice. I want to sell my collection of 8 thousand or more cards (MtG) and I would like to know if any of you had advice on how I would go about doing this? I need the money right now and I dont play anymore.

only half are seperated into card pouches the rest are in boxes.

so anyone know how I could go about unloading these things and getting a decent price for them? I really need the cash and its about all I can sell atm.
>>
fucking hell damn you 4chan scren meant to make a new topic

I love the style of this artist to draw monsters and all. They remind me late medieval draws like this one.
Oh, the Chichevache (pic related) it's so scrawny and all because it's starving. Why? Because only eats faithful and submissive waifus, that why.

You should receive even further bonuses if you have hand-me-down clothes, blankets, or quilts. They'll gain more power for each relative that owned them and then passed them on.

For example, wearing your father's old boyscout uniform, wearing your great-grandmother's quilt as a cape, and using your grandfather's cane as a sword.

Mister Itcher. He comes for children who scratch themselves in public even when their parents tell them not to. The first sign that he's coming for you is that you develop a profound itch. On the first day, it seems to keep moving around; each time you start to scratch it, it moves to a different part of your body. On the second day you develop an irritating red rash over your whole body. On the third day Mister Itcher comes with his great long fingernails, and he'll cure your itch---by scraping your skin right off.

Once every nine years, on a moonless night, the Unseelie of Britain gather in Troller's Gill. The river hags, the bogeys, the goblins, the trolls and the black dogs. If you truly seek to be the best at thwarting their dark plans, you must sneak in their one night and, staying hidden, listen to their hideous talk and council. Who knows? They might mention how many children they've stolen lately, or where their lair currently is.
>>
I just realized this but Wyrd's rpg Through the breach would actually work pefectly for this, neverborn taking the shape of old world monsters, sneaking in through lesser breaches to take children from earth.

maybe, i'll have to thin about it. maybe using them leaves you drained an unable to use them again for the session? maybe you'll take penalties on different attributes?
>>
>>23361115
Perhaps your imagination points are what allows you to see the monsters?
>>
>>23361115
well i certainly want imagination to play a prominent roll in the game but i'm not sure if i want it to be separate from the rest of the abilities or part of them.
>>
>>23361166

Maybe you can only see them if your imagination points are high enough. If they're too low, you can't see them at all, but if they're right in the middle you can still see indirect traces of the monsters, like footprints or calling cards of some sort, or maybe a glimpse of something like this: >>23349704

Friendly bump for some new ideas.
>>
Be sure to wash your hands and face,
unless you want to be strewn all over the place.
Cloth and scrub in hand, her comes Mrs. lace,
Clean and clean and clean some more,
she was always such a clean bore,
until one day they say her husband couldnt take it any more,
he hid her soaps and cleaning things under the floor, and when she found them he left her there for evermore.
now she comes at night, to keep up her cleaning fight,
she will scrub and scrub until your look all new and clean, right for the grave is what she means.

Nursery rhymes should also have some sort of summoning poor to drag the creatures out of hiding.
>>
So to sum up ideas to far:

-Children uncovering and overcoming long forgotten Victorian-style monsters
-Your imagination can warp reality as you progress
-Calvin is recognized as some sort of god to these children
-Stuffed animals and hand me downs from grandparents are considered good gear
-Good magic based on actual rituals

Anyone have anything else to add?

This is a very out there idea, and probably a bad one, but what the hell.

With the mention of Calvin and all, anyone ever think about contacting Watterson? I know he's incredibly secluded and shit, but I think it'd warm his heart to know that a bunch of nerds wanted to make a game and distribute it for free so that it could be enjoyed by all, and that game uses his creation as a god and takes some inspiration from it. I think it'd be right up his alley.
>>
>>23364274
He hates licensing and merchandising according to some of his books.
>>
>>23364328

I know, but that's why I think this concept would appeal to him.

It's free.

It's based on the imagination.

It's something made solely to have fun with friends.
>>
>>23350564
Who is that?
>>
>>23364447
He's from Pan's Labyrinth.
>>
>>23363948
i'm not sure i want to USE Calvin, but he would be an example of a VERY powerful character
>>
>>23364353

The odds that a game will actually be made out of this are low. We're still just brainstorming at this point.
>>
>>23349964
If you make this I will SOOOOOOO play it!
>>
>>23364665
He would be an end game hero for sure, if even used at all.
>>
>>23364984
>The odds that a game will actually be made out of this are low.
It's called Grimm. It's quite good and it was made some time ago.
>>
>>23366491

Big difference. We're not in fairyland. These are monsters in the real world, and original creations at that.
>>
>>23366571
>Incredibly minor difference that can be easily adjusted for
Right, got it.

That said, I encourage you to try and make a game through /tg/. These are always great educations in pointless drama, what not to do and the general lack of serious thought that goes into PnP design.
>>
>>23348526
I think it's the Haunting of Elizabel Cray that featured some bogey-men built for a Victorian era. A creature that surrounds houses with rocks, causing them to collapse.
A baby snatcher with hourglass shaped eyes.
A nightmare that draws it's victims up into the ceiling, consuming them.

well i am in the process of writing it up. its slow going but i think i can get a very rough draft up by friday

>>23365232

>>
>>23349355
I don't think you understand the nature of bogeyman creatures. It is so parents can coerce their children into being obedient. What good does a child that doesn't got to sleep when told do for a parent?
>>
>>23353201
Powers should stem from two main traits, imagination, and courage.
Imagination is what fuels the powers in the first place and allows crazier, more powerful items. It's the difference between summoning a basic sword, and a flaming katana that can shoot tigers.
Courage, however, is necessary to properly focus and use imagination when facing down a creature; it's one thing to think of something cool when you're doodling in class, another when a bloodthirsty beast is staring you in the eye. Scarier monsters, or monsters that cater to a character's specific phobias make it harder to use imagination.

tl;dr imagination to make stuff, courage keeps you from pissing yourself.

Is that good? Are we good?
>>
>>23349653
>The Sandman. They are actually a group of people, but they cast aside their individuality each night to take the mantle of the Sandman, ensuring that children rest safely in their beds. For only a legend can protect a child from legends.
>guardian angels - There is no faith quite as strong as that of a child.
>Teddy Bears - Theodore Roosevelt was a legend in life, and legends have never let death get in the way. All things that share his namesake share his power, and teddy bears are no exception. They are his eyes and ears, and where they are, so is he. Ready to show any ghoul or shadow what for.
>pets- children love their pets and take solace in them. Even those tiny yippy dogs think themselves lions, and as such, bogeymen know they are lions.
>>
>>23368944
Man, now you got me thinking of Teddy Roosevelt getting into a fist fight with an eldritch abomination.
>>
>>23368944

Fairy Godmothers, they made a deal with St. Patrick when he kicked out the rest of the Tuatha de Danaan, so that they wouldn't have to move out of Ireland. What? Did you think it was snakes he banished?
>>
>>23349893
alternatively, you look for the door in it's reflection in a mirror, or in polished steel, for the silver and iron reveal as well as harm them, for they are nought but their glamours.
>>
>>23349906
and Church bells and train whistles.
>>
>>23369060
I'm not sure i want to use a class system. More point buy kinda system. But these are EXELENT ideas for good in the world. Now the players might not know exactly what they are, just that pets are protective and that a teddybear might act as a guardian.
>>
>>23369401
oh, and i want to include an insanity like mechanic. not really copy and paste it from call of Cthulhu, but i feel like it would work. i mean children seeing these horrible things up close. wouldnt that make you a little shaken?
>>
>>23368436
Obviously you missed the part about 'children out after dark'. The 'Spider Boys' only get children who are 'outside' after curfew. Not good little children who come in when they're supposed to.

Now, down into the dark basement with you anon!
>>
>>23369493
anyone have thoughts on this for me? i would like to call it "being shaken", maybe it depends on a combination of your stats and abilities. having a powerful imagination might leave you more vulnerable to being shaken because you are more likely to accept things that dont seem to be what they are? but a strong willpower would cause you to be more resistant to being shaken by nature of you being a bit more hearty.
>>
>>23351473
No such thing as good magic, only the power of God, Civilization(fire and cold iron), and very rarely a benevolent fae whose decided to play fairy godparent.
>>
>>23369655
thats interesting. but i think i like the idea of certain factions being good but having very little to do with the players early on or the players efforts not really being within their notice, or even them not really being allowed to directly interfere
>>
>>23369621
i don't know if imagination should take away from it that may become to complicated. i think a will power modifier plus courage or something like that should make your shaken score and if they don't make their save they lose points and to gain them back they have to go to a comfort place like spending time with their parents.
>>
>>23369689
i kinda like that. but for the sake of balance i want to make imagination have a penalty to being shaken, for example, if you recall moments in calvin and hobbes where calvin was overcome with fear from the monsters under the bed? thats a result of the conditions and his powerful imagination, game mechanics, his imagination would have granted a penalty to his roll vs being shaken.
>>
>>23369778
i feel like i should adopt a trip
>>
>>23369778
sure imagination can be a hindrance it just has to be implemented in a way that isn't to confusing. your shaken would probably look like (courage + will power - imagination)
>>
>>23352528
and if grandpa ever gave you a tin soldier(some piece of shit I found in the attic), it can act as the equivalent of an animal companion in D&D. And if grandpa ever gave you a medal he won in the war(could be a purple heart, could be a medal for being a good desk jockey), it should have some sort of benefit.
>>
>>23369850
yes. i havent worked out all the abilities just yet. only a few. i would need to find a formula. but that is likely to come later. i did attributes: Str, Cha, Wis, Int, & Dex, which add benifits to abilities, the only abilities i've worked out are willpower and part of investigative ability.
>>
>>23369907
ok so im a little hazy do we play kids or adults?
>>
>>23369999
i'm thinking children. 10-12ish. i just worry that this will make it into fetish quest for some people. maybe 14-17ish who still remember or something to that power. but i for sure do not want the players to be adults.
>>
>>23370044
ok i can dig that, you should look at monsters and other childish things i like how they do the stats
FEET
-- P.E.
-- Kicking
-- Dodging
GUTS
-- Wind
-- Courage
-- Wrestling
HANDS
-- Shop
-- Punching
-- Blocking
BRAINS
-- Out-Think
-- Remember
-- Notice
FACE
-- Charm
-- Putdown
-- Connive
they also have points you can put into relationships, the relationships you have in game could be good for healing your shakenness
>>
>>23370119
i'm not sure how that would work in this. i want almost 0 combat. i want combat to be something TERRIFYING. something that the players fear above all else.
>>
>>23370155
i didn't mean we should use those stats exactly i just meant we should try and use stat names that are not the usual, like face instead of charisma and brain instead of wisdom stuff like that. i think it is really cool like that it gives it a more childish feel
>>
>>23370214
i'll keep that in mind. maybe do somethign similar, but i really dont want it to just be a repaint of those.

what i idealy want is to come up with an entirely new system and make it ours. but this really is /tg/'s game, and i will do my best to use am much that they suggest as i can.
