You are a Magical Girl, and you've been given a second chance by your best friend.

A second chance to see things through. A second chance to finish what you've started. A second chance, to make sure that your sempai, broken, haunted and perenially-suffering thing that she is, completes this...absolutely horrifying task she'd been given.

A second chance, just when you've pretty much accepted oblivion. A favor from Wakaba Mirai herself, formerly of the Pleiades Saints, formerly of the Tenth. The friend you had when no one would even so much give you the time of day. The only person who'd encouraged you to publish your haphazard scrawling when everyone else told you that it was a waste of time to.

A second chance. To make sure things go right, this time.

It's a favor you'll never be able to repay.

And you have one last chance to say goodbye.

It's almost surprising how placid and peaceful a Witch Barrier is. Earlier - in the fleeting memories you can remember that didn't involve cold, numbing pain or stark, paralyzing fear - the Witch Barrier had been chaotic, nearly noxious in its disorder. It was sickening, in a way, to have everything change in your line of vision one moment, and then restore itself the next. Even the sky was never still, always in flux, always twisting, a swirling vortex of malevolence and hate.

Now, however...it was quiet. Peaceful. Almost tranquil.

You're not sure where you are at the moment, or where the others are - but you have the odd suspicion that things are being taken care of. As much as you'd want to make sure your sempai's safe - and you know she is - there is something you absolutely cannot put off. Not now.

"I...I'd like to say I was prepared for this," Mirai murmurs, her voice catching slightly in her throat, but nevertheless still spoken softly, perfectly, smoothly. "But I wasn't. I...I thought things would work out in the end. Even Miss Malal reminded me that it's much too optimistic to hope for something like that. Still, I..." her voice trails off in silence, before coming through again, a bit shaky this time. "...I'd like to think I did some good. While I still had the chance to."

You feel it, then, a drop of cold water splashing on your cheek, as you look up at the girl who'd saved your life by trading hers in.

"In the end, I...I suppose that's what's important, isn't it, Midori?"

Another one joins it on your other cheek, and you hear Mirai sniffle gently, gloved hands reaching up to elegantly wipe at her eyes.

. . .

Remember what Malal told you.

How do you respond?

[]Ask her why she did this.
[]Stay silent and let her cry it out. You don't trust yourself to speak, either.
[]Promise that you'll try whatever it takes to get her back, somehow.

"B-because it's the right thing to do," Mirai replies, seemingly surprised that you'd ask such a question, surprised enough that her teary eyes widen slightly at this. "Y-you're...you're my friend, Midori. You jumped in her to save me and your sempai. Was I supposed to let you die, just like that?" She sniffs almost haughtily, putting on an air typical of a Pleiades Saint. "Besides, it's uncouth for an aristocrat like me to owe a favor to a petty commoner like Midori-chan."

You look at her, faintly puzzled, before she manages a smile. "well, that's what Saki-san would've said, at least. But I'm not her. I couldn't...I couldn't bear seeing you die like that, Midori-chan. I had to do something."

You want to get up. You want to hug her, you want to wipe her eyes for her, to tell her that you're sorry for everything and that you'll promise to find a way to get her back - but you feel your body unresponsive, unwilling to move from that spot, your head pillowed on her thighs. You wonder about this - you'd been able to move earlier, with Madoka and Malal. What's wrong now?

"Oh, um. This...they've put you back in your body, I believe, and while it's slowly healing, it's still quite fragile. So you're not supposed to make any sudden movements until it's properly healed." Mirai smiles. "But I know you, Midori-chan. It's alright. This...this had to happen, and while I wish I could go back with you and be with everyone again, I...it's better, this way. I am at peace, and so should you."

She leans over and places a gentle kiss on your forehead, her lips soft and warm. Her curtain of curly orange hair falling briefly around you, blocking out the unnatural sky of the barrier for one brief moment.

As Mirai draws back, more tears in her eyes than there were before - but the smile on her face sincere, heartbreakingly-happy - the Barrier begins to destroy itself.

>>23335559

It starts with the Barrier's fading sun suddenly disappearing with a sound akin to glass breaking. Then, hairline cracks start to spiderweb across the sky, spreading out from where the unnatural sun once was. Light peeking out from those fissures, which start to widen with disturbing alacrity across what should be Mitakihara's twisted atmosphere. The ground starts to shake, rubble starting to hover upward - but it's done with such a lack of sound, a muted disintegration, that it doesn't even seem to shatter the nearly funereal-like peace of it.

"This isn't the scene I wanted us to part ways in, Midori," Mirai says as she helps you up to a sitting position beside her, her arm around your waist, letting you lean on her. "...but it'll do. And I have been honored to be your friend, if...I could be so presumptuous." Her other hand takes your own and laces her fingers through yours.

You turn towards her just as the world begins to shatter around you.

How do you say goodbye?

The rest of the saints didn't like Midori. It seems it was because her operating style was the complete opposite of theirs

> Brutally direct, to the point, showing no consideration at all to the usual finery and rituals that you've seen the Pleiades Saints perform whenever fighting another Magical Girl. There'd be declarations of titles, of oathes, of sweeping and elegant salutes and all that. Always respectful and graceful pugilism, never direct and brutal murder.

...And the fact that Midori is poor.

Anyway one thing does strike me. Why was Midori getting the assignments to help rapists and such? And Juubey placed value on her as well...

I wonder if Juubey was trying to desensitise
Midori so he could build her up as a ruthless Callidus assassin?

Maybe not even as specific as a Callidus assassin, perhaps Jyuubey wanted to make all of his magical girls really cold and hardcore in personality. No. No, it can't end now. It's too soon. You were supposed to have a few more moments with her! It hasn't even been a couple of minutes--

The ground shakes again, a bit harder this time, as if to press upon you the need to hurry and make your parting words to a friend that you will never see again. Or talk to again. It takes every single ounce of what little strength you have left in your limp, immobile form - what willpower you could summon up making up for the rest - for you to lift and wrap your arms around her in a tight, clasping embrace.

"Goodbye," You manage to whisper, smiling so that she'll hear it in your voice, and overlook the fact that you're crying now. "I'll miss you."

The sky, completely ruined now, is pockmarked and fissured with chasms of searing, blinding light. The ground mirrors it - and you see buildings, houses, corpses of familiars being flung skyward, sucked into the gaps.

She seems to understand, and she buries her head into your shoulder, her hands clawing into your costume. She chokes out a single phrase, one that is cut off as all sound suddenly dies.

"Please don't forget m--"

The barrier finally collapses, taking with it the twisted reality shaped by a Witch's despair.

The ensuing darkness is kind enough to take away your sight a moment before the girl in your arms simply ceases to exist. Leaving nothing in your embrace except air.

You pitch forward into nothing, falling, and you close your eyes.

You open them again, inside...inside the ruined Silent Room of the Ninth Officio's Research and Development Base, in Siberia.

It is a complete shambles. The desktop computer that your sempai had used to talk to Mirai is now all but plastic and metal and glass fused together into an unrecognizable shape, smoking and charred and smoldering. The walls are in a similar state, steel and cement blackened with carbon scoring as well as what looks to be claw marks. The only intact thing in the room, funnily enough, is the fluorescent lamps overhead, although one or two of them seem to have been shattered somehow.

Other people are inside the room with you, from what you can hear. You turn slightly to see in the far corner of the room the huddled, wheezing form of Kharn, her greatcoat jacket draped over her as a sort of blanket, the ragged, bleeding stump of her shoulder where her right arm had been still a fresh, angry wound. Her hair, matted and stringy, concealing her face.

Beside her, as if keeping guard, stands Tiny Pete, his armor rent and scarred and dented in a thousand different places. One of the eyeslits of its elephantine helm seems to have been put out, inactive, devoid of the crimson light usually shining from it. The other tusk seems to have been shattered as well, joining the other in battle damage.

Someone's....someone's missing, though. Someone important. You try to maneuver yourself to look around for her - when you suddenly realize that you're once more pillowing your head in someone else's lap, and you look up to see Chiaki Matsuda - Murderface, your sempai - calmly smoking a bent cigarette above you. Her glasses are surprisingly intact, and...her hair is long.

[2/3]
>>
>>23336026

Really long. Just like...the fragment with the ribbon.

Before adrenalin could course into your already aching form as you feel the cold stab of fear make its presence felt, however--

"...You awake?" She looks down at you, her voice hoarse, weak, but gentle. "I...I wanted to wake you up, because my legs've fallen asleep, but you started snoring, so..."

She lets the sentence trail off into silence, awkwardly, before turning away and taking another pull from her cigarette.

How do you react?
>>
>>23335945

Deculture mentioned in the question time after the final QB chapter that incubator's have to take energy from their own stockpile to make Magical Girls.

So recruting magical girls just for the sake of making witches can bring about diminishing returns.

>>23335993
>>23336012

That was Kyoko.

That leads me to other thing.
Kyoko mentions that if a familiar eats enough people that they become a witch.

But there was a line in the second episode where Mami says that "If you're lucky, they might drop a grief seed"

And at the time Kyoko explained familiar 'promotion' she didn't know the real reason witches are made.

This leads me to the thought that perhaps Kyoko is wrong, while familiar's can become witches. These familiar -witches do not drop grief seeds.

Mami was the type to eliminate all witches and familiars to protect the populace, so while she might have heard such a thing from other girls before, she wasn't about confirm it with an actual experiment. To her, it was enough knowing sometimes they drop it and sometimes they don't. (I doubt it's knowledge she wants to impart on her protege anyway)

Now, Kyoko if she spoke from experience it seemed like she at least had gone through with letting familiars go to farm seeds. Kyubey spoke of her having plenty of Grief Seeds in reserve, so I would at least tend to believe that she had confirmed the theory on at least one occasion while amassing them.

So perhaps in this universe. Familiars form grief seeds if they eat enough people and they return to the witch that spawned them when they do.

You stare up at her for quite a few moments, in the relative silence of the room - before reaching up with a shaky hand and pulling the cigarette away from her lips. She blinks down at you in mild surprise at this, her lips shaping a protest, but one that doesn't get to be vocalized as your vision start to mist up again. Warning you of tears that you obviously haven't cried yet.

With a surprising gentleness that you've never experienced from your sempai - at least, not from the one you've been acquainted with all this time - she scoops you up into her arms and pulls you to her, letting you muffle your own sobs into her shoulder. Her scent - a curious mix of earthy sweat, dried blood and gunpowder - all but reminds you of just what you've been through and what you've lost in the process.

"It's...it's okay, Midori. We're back. We're safe." Chiaki says after a rather long and awkward pause, nearly mumbling the words, but no less earnest in her effort. "You saved me. It's over. I'm okay. You're okay." Another pause. "...Thank you."

You cling to her with what little strength left inside of you, your shoulders still shaking from all the crying. It's all but sapped you, leaving you cold and empty and drained. And yet, hearing her say it, hearing her confirm what you've managed to do by the skin of your teeth - it makes everything all worth it.

Someday, you'll forgive yourself for letting your best friend trade her life in for yours.

After a while, you've managed to stop yourself from crying. You've also managed to peel yourself from your sempai as well, although you're still holding onto her hand. It's silly, but you can't help but think that she'd suddenly disappear the moment you let go. Both of you are leaning against the wall now, just trying to catch your breaths, enjoying the luxury of finally being back in the real world without things going completely eldritchian on you.

"I...I think I remember some stuff a bit more clearly, now." Chiaki says after a moment, toying with a crumpled pack of cigarettes in her hand. "About Pinky. And...I guess what happened back then." She clears her throat after a moment, before reaching up to rake her unnaturally-long hair away from her eyes. "It all comes back to me, somehow. Something I did to her, made her this way." A half-hearted chuckle.

"It's...it's all my fault, isn't it?"

Probably not. Midori is in a position to make sure things happen and influence Chiaki.

Letting Chiaki know too much might let Faust in on it, since she seems to be able to read chiaki's mind at times.
>>
>>23336856
They can potentially help put Madokami back in control or something if all collected by Chiaki. Anyone else gets all of them, though, and Bad Thingsâ„¢ could happen.
>>
>>23336856
According to Madokami, while they're still awful and dangerous toys, supposedly it really would be to our benefit to collect them all.

Probably it'd give us the power to fix what we screwed up. Also it'd be good to get them out of the hands of all the other magical girls who can't handle them.

Maybe the things don't drive people insane but just capture MG's souls which is arguably a better fate than eventual witchdom. Did you forget what happened to Ahriman, Kharn, us and Mami? It's insidious and drives megucas to an unholy bloodlust at best.
>>
>>23336942
Ahriman and Kharn were already psychotic, and Mami hasn't shown the slightest sign of anything unusual going on with her mind.
>>
>>23336942

Ahriman was promised power, Mami rejected it.

Also implying Kharn didn't originally have massive levels of unholy bloodlust already.
>>
>>23336856

I wonder what the golden weapons do anyway?

They
1. Make you immune to witchdom
2. Can drive you insane
3. They suck in the welders soul when they die.

Before the reveal, I thought that they were a perversion of Godoka's duty she did in her new world. Which was collecting the grief from soul gems before the user witches out and taking the dead magical girl to magical girl vanhalla.

So these weapons could be some grief collecting thing, where all the grief from a magical girl killed with a golden weapon ends up absorbed into the weapon. The weapons take grief from the wielders so they don't witch out and they end up taking the wielders 'to another place' when they die.
The whole corruption thing could be weapons way of getting the user to generate more grief.
>>
>>23336913
No matter Madokami's level of influence, these are still weapons which drive people to bloodlust, and I'd think very carefully before assuming that getting my soul sucked into an inanimate object known for corruption is a good idea.

Kilgore with hamhands turned into a Daemon. So did Ahriman, because the staff/Pinky told her to.

Mami went FoFA in Charlotte's barrier until Sayaka snapped her out of it.

Murderface went berserk on Mirai and would've cut Kharn down if we hadn't voted against it.

Kirika went from bitch to absofucknuts crazy bitch with that golden pigsticker.

Golden weapons aren't nice.
>>

At that time she had been alone for a long time with the exception of Kyuubey.

In this verse, Kyuubey is only abit of a dick. The support structures for the Magical Girls are present with backup personnel, peers, juniors and senior staff. Importantly, she also knows the fate of Magical Girls in the end.

I believe she has come to accept that eventual fate, instead of having it forced on her like in the original show, making her much more emotionally stable.

The obvious benefit right-off is the drastically increased fighting ability. If the corruption's effects can be offset or circumvented in some way, it would seem that coming to an understanding with the soul contained within the Golden Weapon has its perks. If not, then it would appear that too much corruption makes you batshit insane and maybe warped into something horrible (like how the Ahriman-Magical Girl got twisted into some sorta bird thingy).

Of course, in Chiaki's case, sidestepping the corruption via the soulgem circuit might not be such a great thing in the long run. Pic related, sorta.
>>
>>23337117
STR was very eager on splattering Kharn. Not sure if that was her general personality or what, but it could be that her psychosis is just toned down and comes to the surface only . Or we just haven't interacted enough. We should totally chat with her and other weapons once we're back as Chiaki.

>>
>>23337179
The soul 'contained' within the weapon and making up the 'whispers' it sends out seems to be their earlier users. Everything here is a hand-me-down except the Deagle, maybe.
And I suspect that Ahriman got the way she was because she was already partially witched out, see canon Kirika technically witching out but still staying in control long enough to attack Oriko's enemies.

>>
>>23337218

It might not even be correct to say that the Golden Wep users are "witching out". They could be something entirely different at that point.

If what QB said in the series is still correct, then witches may be the inevitable product of becoming a meguca. But that's only when they experience enough grief to overwhelm their soulgems or whatever. I wonder if a meguca could possibly "mature" into something other than a witch if the conditions were right.

N-no. It's not her fault, you tell her, tightening your grip on her hand. Even Madoka - the part of her that helped you save her fragment by fragment, the part of her that saved you and gave you another chance at life - said as much. You didn't set things in motion, someone else did.

Someone who stared with nothing but pure hatred in her eyes. Someone who never even thought about the consequences of what she'd do - and everyone who would suffer in the process. Someone who'd given up her humanity to become a monster, worse than a mindless witch. Witches, at least, were insane to begin with. The Homura you encountered...that was a different kind of insane entirely, the kind who would see the galaxy burn just to get what they wanted.

A completely and utterly different person from your sempai, who was thrown into this role with nothing else than an unreliable memory and a gun in her hand. Besides, Homura would have killed you even before you could have blinked. Chiaki, at least, only shot off your legs.

"...Y-yeah. I...I guess she would've." Your sempai smiles at this, again. It seems that besides the sudden change in hairstyle, she'd gotten quite a bit of the first fragment's awkwardness, too. "I, um. I never did apologize about that, I think. There's...there's a lot of ways I could've handled it differently. Taking down another Magical Girl temporarily. Um." She squeezes your hand in return, gently, carefully.

"S-sorry. For shooting your legs off."

You shake your head at this, smiling, before leaning your head on her shoulder.

You've forgiven her for that long ago. Besides, she had something else to apologize for.

"Oh? What's that...?"

She should very well know!

"..." Chiaki blinks at you, before going very slightly red.

"I was...I was kind of drunk at the time."

[1/2]
>>
>>23337435

Not quite, Chiaki still has her penchant for cigarettes. It's a safe assumption to say she'll hit the vodka once this blows over.
>>
>>23337478

You giggle at this. It...it feels good to joke around. To laugh. Things are starting to get normal, right? Things are getting better. Yeah.

A cough from clear across the room breaks the atmosphere some, reminding you of Kharn from across the room. The Betrayer, who you traded some very harsh words with in the Barrier, when she tried to challenge the armored fragment to a duel. She doesn't seem to be moving, but she's breathing at least.

You're...you're still angry with her, that much is certain. But you couldn't deny that she didn't help out in the final hour.

You turn towards your sempai, and she's looking at Kharn as well. A calculating look in her eyes.

"I remember," she says before you could ask. "I saw what happened. I've never seen anyone do that before, talking her down like that." A moment. "Maybe Malal did. Once. I'm not too sure, but I remember an instance where Kharn pissed her off, and she had her in tears. It takes someone brave to face someone like her and stand your ground." It's then that Chiaki pulls herself up to her feet, helping you up as well - not letting go of your hand the entire time. "Let's see how she's doing."

The both of you make your way across the wrecked room easily enough - Tiny Pete moving aside with a grind of obviously-damaged servos, a limp in his left leg making his usually-ponderous gait a bit unsteady. Kharn doesn't even so much as notice you walking up to her, but she looks up with blood-tracked eyes, a melancholy smile on her face.

[2/3]
>>
>>23337514

"Midori. Warmaster." Kharn's own voice is hoarse, weak, and she turns to the side to spit a black glob of encrusted blood to the floor after she speaks. "If you are going to kill me, then please make it quick. Do not let Misaka or Souji see it." She gestures to the deactivated chainaxes beside her, Gorefather and Gorechild. "I am aware of my betrayal. The sentence is death. This I know also." She bares her throat to you - no, to Chiaki. "My only regret is that I did not die in battle like I intended to. We cannot have everything, I am guessing."

Beside you, Chiaki is silent. Seemingly considering it.

This is true. We aren't, strictly speaking, in control of this situation. Chaki's the Warmaster here, and she has final say on what happens to Kharn.

>>
>>23338093
I'd say we just whisper it into her ear, with a grim expression on our face like we're dealing with a life or death matter, and as we tell Chiaki we must make sure she knows not to smirk. Even if she wants to, we must treat this like it is a horrible thing that we are doing.

"Miss Malal wasn't kidding. You ARE an idiot."

It takes you a few moments of Chiaki and Kharn staring at you in surprise to realize that it was you who said that. You couldn't believe it yourself, but now that you think about it, it makes a whole lot of sense. And Malal - MISS Malal - did tell you, and if you're taking anyone's advice, it's hers.

"Midori," Chiaki says after a moment, her voice low, but there's a hint of a smile on her lips. She reaches up to brush some hair from her eyes again. "What do you think I should do with Kharn?"

Oh. WELL. If she's asking, then--

"Now wait just a moment...!" Kharn tries, her eyes narrowed at this break in protocol. "The Warmaster is--"

"--supposed to make a decision by herself, yes." You cut her off, rallying magnificently, a smile on your face as you go full bore on who could be the most idiotic person this side of a Barrier. "But as her aide, I can make recommendations, can't I? Miss Malal did the same for you, I'm sure."

"Yes, but--"

"Then I make my recommendation to the Warmaster." You say this in a huffy sort of voice, imitating how Mirai would have said it, but with an exagerrated air. You glance down at the deactivated chainaxes, and shake your head. "Enough of dying. There's been enough of that going around, I think. No, Valnikov Kharn - you will live with your betrayal. You will live with your mistakes for the rest of your life, and it will be a long and happy one." You turn towards Chiaki and nod, the both of you sharing a knowing look.

Kharn's expression turns into one of muted horror and shock, and she looks up at Chiaki.

"M-Murderface, you cannot--"

"My name is Chiaki Matsuda, Kharn." Your sempai shakes her head, her long black hair swaying with the movement. "And as Warmaster, I sentence you to become Souji's housewife. Deal with it."

Kharn lets out a despairing wail, before slumping back against the wall, looking quite defeated.

"...I do not know how to show my face to Souji anymore," The former Warmaster says dejectedly. "Or Misaka. I...I just wanted to die as I have lived. One last swordfight. I...I missed it. I missed the adrenalin, I missed the glory, the action..." She looks up at you and Chiaki, almost pitifully. "I did not mean to spit at my oaths of loyalty with you, but...I wanted to feel it again."

Oh, she'll feel things alright. Last you heard, motherhood was the most extreme thing ever. And she can easily show her face to Souji - he's in the room right now with you, isn't he?

"W-what?" Kharn nearly yelps, looking around. "W-where? I do not see him--"

"Tiny Pete?" chiaki says quietly, and the behemoth turns around to face the three of you. Your sempai nods at it, and the light in its one intact helm eyeslit dies as its chest splits open.

Revealing the pilot inside.

...

Wait. That's not Souji. He's...not that small, right?

"Misaka...?" Chiaki says, blinking, before reaching in and pulling out what looks to be a sound-asleep Misaka. Her hands clasping what looks like Kharn's Warmaster Cap to her chest.

"But...if Souji isn't there--" Your sempai begins, looking around. There's a hiss, and the doors to the Silent Room is thrown open - a harangued-looking Souji, pressing an icepack onto the back of his head and tearing black electrical tape off of his arms, storming right in.

"I thought--" You tell the young man, who looks as though he'd been sleeping on his keyboard the entire time, with imprints of keys on his cheek.

"S-Souji, I..." Kharn swallows audibly, her black eyes wide and staring. "I could...explain..."

You stop yourself from grinning and turn to Chiaki, whose arms are still full of Misaka.

"We should probably let them talk, right?" You suggest, and she nods.

Film Noir is a fight against overwhelming odds, against the bad in every person you meet, against the fear and hate driving people to do the worst things to each other. It's one man (or puella magi) against everything, one man, the best man in this world but good enough for any world. There will be blood. There will be death. It will hit your friends, innocent bystanders, the bad guys. The lines between these, they will blur and wash away in the rain and blood. There will be injustice, unpaid for in the end. There will be hopelessness. There will be no redemption for many people. There will be dying with regrets and tears in your eyes. There will be the struggle to do something, anything. There will be betrayal.

And if it's true Film Noir, there will be an end. More likely than not, it will be yours. If you made a difference before that? Well, that's all your choice to make.
>>
>>23339232

You just have to work for it.

You lead Chiaki out of the Silent Room, and wait for her to step through before closing the door carefully and quietly behind you. As soon as you do, however, you signal Chiaki to wait, before pressing your ear against the door's surface. Yes, you probably need to catch up on a whole week's worth of sleep - it feels like it, anyway - and you did promise Chiaki pancakes, back then in the barrier - but you're not about to step away from hearing the Betrayer get her comeuppance. It's a shame you won't be able to see it, but hearing it is fine.

"Midori? What are you--" Chiaki asks, blinking from behind her glasses, and you shush her. After a few moments, with some careful maneuvering of Misaka, she presses her ear against the door too, her curiosity obviously getting the better of her.

Just as you expected, they're talking in Russian. But it's not what they're saying that's important - you've learned that it's all in the how that matters. And from where you're standing, Kharn is trying to explain why she resorted to that kind of stupidity, stumbling over her explanations, clearly guilty but trying to explain her side - while Souji is having absolutely none of her bullshit, his words clipped, barely restrained, and terse.

It's then that the arguing becomes a shouting match, and even you could hear the faint crack in Kharn's voice in every punctuating word. Finally it all seems to come to a head, and you could hear a shudder in her voice that tells you that she's broken down. And then, apropos of nothing, a slapping sound. And another. And another.

Then, Souji's voice, low and dour. Followed by a long silence - and then Kharn murmuring something through her tears. Silence follows for what seems like an interminable moment, and it's then that you hear the rustle of...cloth against cloth.

The both of you dropped off Misaka in her room, the Warmaster's Cap still clutched tightly in her arms. You tried to pull it out, but Chiaki asked you to leave it - she'll give it back when she's ready. With the younger of the two Russian siblings tucked in, you make your way to the kitchen, where you spend a couple of minutes making your sempai pancakes while she waited. Relishing the chance to be able to do something like this again, when earlier you were all but resigned to part ways with the world of the living.

Chiaki ate them with her usual gusto, ravenously tearing into the generous pile you made for her - and while the both of you agree that it could never match up to Mami's own, just seeing her smile once more after every bite was enough assurance that you're somewhat close to it. She thanks you, taking hold of your hand, and you couldn't help but wonder if...if the gesture meant something more. Maybe you could hope, now, but it's probably too early. Give it time, give it time.

The meal ends, and the both of you make your way topside. Back to the surface. Just to...nail in the fact that you're back in the real world. Holding each other's hands as the elevator brought you up back from the subterranean levels.

It's...night time. After dark. But the moon's quite full, lighting up the sky with the stars. With the blanket of white snow all around, the quiet chill of the Siberian winter - you finally allow yourself to relax completely.

The nightmare is over. For now, at least.

"You...know I'm not really ratified yet as Warmaster, right?" Chiaki murmurs. "I can't really sentence anyone to do anything. Not yet, anyway."

Oh, you know. But Kharn seems to be quite convinced. Besides, things worked out, didn't they?

"Guess so." Chiaki smiles as she turns back to look at the moon. "I...thank you for saving me, Midori. I have to say that again, because...I don't think anyone else would have."

Of couse they would have. You were just conveniently there. But you'd do it again in a heartbeat.

"...Still. Thanks." She gives your hand a squeeze. "Now, uh, about that anime..."

You tell her that you should just enjoy the quiet moment. She shakes her head at this, but acquiesces, allowing you your second sigh of relief that night.

Silence. And then...

"You met me at a strange time of my life," You murmur, echoing the words the armored fragment said to you, back in your father's restaurant. Chiaki blinks at this, a questioning look on her face, and you shake your head, smiling. She probably doesn't remember it, which is a good thing, considering.

Strange indeed, you agree.

You just hope that it gets better before it gets any stranger.

For both your sakes, and everyone else's.

>>
>>23339792

Ah, well, the next threads will be back to Chiaki's perspectives, but yes, flashbacks will still be in other characters' perspectives for sure!
>>
>>23339768
This has been an awesome ride so far, Deculture, you're the man for keeping up with this.

Will we be returning to Chiaki once we're back in Japan? Will there be another chapter as the dickbutt Incubator?

>sacrifices ladersor
...is there a chapter known as the Ladersors?
>>
How many Bling-Bling weapons will we be seeing in the upcoming threads?

THE ONLY QUESTION THAT MATTERS:

WILL IT NOIR HARDER?
>>
>>23339895

Hahaha, well, somewhat messed up! But Chiaki will be able to handle it, for sure.

>>23339914
Of course! People will get to decide her new look, or if she goes back to her short-haired self.
>>
>>23339933

Of course! It will noir harder than it ever has before, but reasonably!
>>
>>23339768
Is a Midori/Madoka pairing just too much of a pipe dream by now?

On a scale from Tracer Bullet (calvin&hobbes) to Sin City, where is that?

I'm...I wasn't aware of such a pairing. D:

I'd say Max Payne 1 or 3 levels of noir!

We probably need to get Midori to cut our (Chiakis) hair n the next thread.
She pretty much told us that we`re not the same person we were before. We are not Akemi Homura who wore her hair long or in braids.

We are Chaki Matsuda, and we like our hair short, because having long hair is a pain in the ass.

Ending Theme of Magical Girl Noir: The Animation
It starts playing just a bit before the actual credits start showing up, so that the credits start showing right as the singing starts.
