Somewhere in the Kuwaiti desert, there's a nomadic family just sitting down to have their morning tea and breakfast. They're almost completely oblivious to the war around them, save for the occasional crumps of bombs detonating miles away, and the screaming of jet engines before and afterward. Surely they'll build a fire in, or outside of their tent, mama nomad will put the kettle on, and the morning routine will begin.

That somewhere is most certainly not here.

Here, this very second, 1 ARSOF is looking down the barrels of two soviet-bloc tanks which have just endured continuous shelling from both five witches and four Abrams tanks. This is after dodging two F-15's worth of ordinance dropped directly on their heads.

Time seems to have stopped. In the back of your head, a tiny voice is screaming at you to run. Another, larger, louder voice is drowning it out with things you would tell yourself before games. The only catch is that you know that these tackles wouldn't just hurt and be sore for a day or two afterwords.

“Oh fuck, oh shit, ohshitohfuck.” Nicky is muttering, almost mantralike. For the first time since you've entered your tank, he looks up at you, eyes as big as dinner plates. “The fuck do we do now, sir?”

They didn't return fire when we were pounding their shields because SW shields are solid--they'd have to drop it to return fire.

Have the company split into two, one moving while the other keeps pounding. Once we out range them comfortably, fucking book it.

"All Tanks, open fire again! Keep pounding that tank!"

"Top,split our girls and move to flank that thing from both sides... and if we bite, call in Broken Arrow and get out of here."

Notice that the tank refused to open fire when we kept pounding it from the front. Our girls also reported that that the gun was silent, indicating that it was magiced as well.

What this implies is that the tank had to concentrate on its defense and not shoot during our bombardment. If our own tanks keep pounding it, we might be able to force it to keep shielding itself AND witches can only create a shield in one direction( save Viper but Viper's Viper). By having our girls flank it from both sides at once, we increase our chances of getting shots on target.

It basically comes down to which shitty movie you watched more recently, Broken Arrow or We Were Soldiers.

In military context, the phrase held both definitions simultaneously, which was never much of a problem because the circumstances in which each would be applied really didn't overlap at all.

Additionally, the DoD directive for the nuclear incident definition came out in 1993, so in '89 it only meant 'i need air support ten minutes ago'

>[] “We shift fire, stick and move. There's nine of us, and two of them!”

“Alright boys, we got something they don't. We got numbers. We gotta set the tempo of this fight. Stick and move, shoot and scoot. Top, take Mister Fister, Old Hand, and Patterson, swing wide left. Come around on 'em and either try to get them to look at you, or shoot the shit out of their side armor! Everyone else, gimme mobile elements centered on Booze Hound. We gotta do some Marine Corps maneuver warfare shit here! Anderson! Get on the horn and see what you can pull me support wise! I don't care what favors you have to burn!”

From your viewports, you see Rockfield, your company first sergeant, grab Patterson by the shoulders and swing around behind your vehicle, moving to link up with sergeants Norton and Brand.

Unfortunately, the bloc tanks have a different idea. One pivots in place to give up it's front armor in exchange for you not being able to turn their flank. The other locks it's gun directly on you.

Looking into your scopes, you place your cross hairs onto the turned vehicle. You mark it as your primary target for Nicky, who's own reticule you see swing up towards the enemy armor.

“Sir,” sergeant Norton says over the radio, beginning to maneuver his Abrams behind a dune. “What happens if they engage both elements with one vehicle a piece?”

“You mean like they're doing now?”

“Uh, yeah, pretty much.”

“If we can surround 'em, we can win.” You reply simply.
>>
>>23206544

2/2

Your tank rocks backwards as young Nicholas engages his target. Pressing your eyes to your scope, you watch the round close the range on-the-bounce, slamming into the sideways tank's armor. You're met with a spectacular explosion as the vehicles ERA detonates, leaving behind a scorched, but relatively unscathed block of turret armor.

“Well, shit.” Nicky says as the second vehicle engages you.

Seigel was absolutely right. There was no sound at all from the vehicle firing. No muzzle flash, no muzzle extractor vents, not a whisper. If it weren't for your own armor defeating the shot, you're sure that you wouldn't have even known that you'd been shot at.

Dr. Light's invention works incredibly well. The enemy shot was aimed at one of the large pieces of plate on either side of your gun, where most of your proto-plating is focused. The armor itself would've buckled under the shot, however, the electric discharge was so great that, as promised, it completely vaporized the enemy round.

“Ey cap, bad news. No support to be had, Saudi and task force elements are engaged on all fronts. Air is flying almost nonstop and arty hasn't had a chance to sit for nearly three hours now.” Anderson says over the radio.

[] “Anderson, where the hell are you!? We gotta draw these fuckers in!”

They have shields. The shields would stop it dead.

>[] “Never fuckin' changes, zoomies do the flyin', tankers just do the dyin'. All vehicles, maintain engagement!”

“Yeah, yeah, figures. All vehicles, maintain your level of engagement!”

Watching the fight develop for a few seconds, you're able to see that Rockfield's group has made decent headway to your northwest. A few of the electric reactive plates on both Old Hand and Mister Fister have been burned away, but both vehicles are still in the fight. Rockfield fires a burst from her SAW, met with a ripple of exploding ERA blocks on the first soviet tank's turret. While neither side is making much headway, a part of you is sure that you can win this fight by pure attrition if you have to.

That part of you shuts right the hell up when another enemy shot engages and is defeated by your proto-plating. You know that at some point, one of those shots would get lucky and hit an un-protected area, and you're not too fond of the idea of learning just how much armor those guns can penetrate.

Behind you, Rosalez and Seigel open up with their weapons, the latter's being drowned out by the roar of a Ma Deuce. More blocks of ERA detonate on the broadsided vehicle before their shield comes up again, easily shrugging off even the enhanced rounds of your witches.
>>
>>23207320

2/2

From the front of the enemy tank, your vehicles pounce. Two silver bullet penetrators, a full SAW magazine, and Patterson's fifty millimeter cannon shout in defiance, all but one of the shots being defeated by either the armor or ERA blocks. That one single shot, however, penetrates the driver's compartment of the enemy tank, undoubtedly killing the poor bastard in there and removing the vehicle's ability to move.

“Alright! That's a Mobility kill! Chalk one up for Mister Fist-”

Norton is immediately cut off when his tank is gutted by an enemy shell. The round penetrates through the Abrams mantlet, blowing the hatches off and sending a gout of flame into the night sky.

Your heart immediately sinks, and that tiny voice telling you to run gets louder. The other side had drawn first blood, despite being hideously outnumbered and previously seemingly undergunned.

“Don't let that one be in vain! Fuckin' pound 'em!” You shout into your radio, your blood boiling. They killed one of your tanks. They hurt your babies. Now that blood is in the water, you've started your shark's charge.

Patterson, who can't take her eyes off the wreckage of Mister Fister's hulk, barely has time to bring up her shield before a second shell slams into it and throws her onto her back. You can't tell if she's breathing or not, and she's definitely not moving.

“Anderson, you get in this goddamned fight right now!” You shout, slamming your fist into one of the many consoles in front of you.

“Way ahead of you, sir. Give us thirty seconds and we'll engage. Hold your fire on the immobile tank, and try to draw the other one away. There's a tiny hamlet a klik to the east. Hate to bring the fight to the civilians, but fuck it. It's war.”

“Solid, HANS! Booze Hound takes up the rear!” You say. If anyone else from your company dies, it's going to be you for leading them into this mess. Hopefully you won't have to write more than four letters home today.

Old Hand swings around behind the wreckage of Mister Fister, making a superb running shot on the immobile tank, destroying what you think is their thermal imager. If that was it, you've effectively blinded them, forcing either the vehicle commander to open his hatch or them to fire blind.
>>
>>23207899

Sweet Thang, your third and now final steelwheel, begins a slow roll towards the hamlet, acting as mobile cover for Seigel, Ooishi, and Rosalez. Your two scouts, completely exhausted from their sprint back to your lines, seem to be lagging behind, though not by enough to risk being shot.

“Oh, fuck, sir?” Nicky says, his 'lookout' reticule moving to the left of your screen, targeting reticule still firmly locked on the mobile enemy vehicle.

On your screen, you can see Rockfield trying to drag Patterson's form back behind the cover of the still burning wreckage of Mister Fister. Both enemy tanks had them firmly in sights.

You know you only have time to shout one warning, the question is, which to make it?

>[] “Hans, dive for the ball! Block 'em block 'em block 'em!”

“Hans, get us in there! Rockfield! Shield!”

“Ja, Herr Captain.”

Hans slams the vehicle into drive and nearly breaks his wrist twisting the throttle, throwing you back into your seat. Credit where it's due, the man is an outstanding driver. He blocks out the two vehicles before the honeywell turbine engine in Booze Hound sends you over a berm, landing hard in the sand, just in time to see Rockfield's shield completely deflect the first shot. Your top Sargent staggers, unleashing a burst with her saw while still holding onto Patterson’s collar.

The second shot, however, breaks through her shield and sends her spinning into the sand. Casually tossed aside, Mary Patterson's form lands behind Mister Fister's burning structure.

Then both guns focus in on you.

A pair of heat signatures in your sight stand up from the desert sands, throwing away what look like voids in the desert night. A pair of white lances scream forward from them, slamming into the still mobile enemy vehicle. The first is absorbed by a rolled steel cage on the rear of the vehicle, however the second sails through the opening the first caused and detonates on the engine compartment of the enemy vehicle. A fire breaks out, fuel lines squirting diesel into the blaze.

The commanders hatch of the enemy vehicle flaps open, revealing an older Russian officer. His salt and pepper hair is covered only by his comms headset, hard set jaw still hammering out orders, moustache quivering.

Ooishi takes his head off.

From his desert vantage point, Anderson taps his partner on the shoulder before sprinting to the hatch of the vehicle, pumping a round into his shotgun. He climbs up the side of the vehicle, aiming the weapon into the open hatch. You watch as he fires at least once, running the slide immediately afterwards, before jumping down and sprinting away.

“Those were our last two AT-4's, sir. That's all we can do for you unless you're able to pop the other one's hatches. Dunno how you'd do it, we're all out of det, but good luck.”

Hans swings your vehicle into place, blocking out both Patterson and Rockfield from the enemy's sight picture. Nicky swivels the turret, placing his reticule on the enemy vehicle just in time for it to fire.

Dr. Light's invention has worked amiably to this point. It's defeated every shot that's been thrown at it thus far, and done it in a way that no non-reactive armor could even hope to do it. Unfortunately, it's a finite resource. The enemy projectile slams into your turret face, leaving a massive crater in the armor. It also takes almost all of your computer systems out, along with the motor for the ammo door on Michael's side of the turret.

“Don't let papa down, baby.” Nicky muttered, and thumbed the firing stud a hair after you got hit. His round mirrors theirs almost exactly, only yours goes through. The penetrator slams into the harsh angle of the enemy tank's turret, burrowing it's way through the hard steel. Once inside, it bounces off every other surface, not having enough kinetic energy to travel through the other side. You have no doubt in your mind that everyone on the inside of the turret is dead. Maybe others too, but you have no idea if the vehicle is compartmentalized for just this sort of thing.

fuck no, as long as we cant see every single crew member of those tanks dead or surrendered out of the vehicle they are still a threat, treat them as such

Is this correct:

We've got one badguy with an engine hit, a dead commander, and potential one other dead guy from Anderson's shotgun.

The other badguy has a dead driver thanks to Mr. Fister, and a dead everyone else from our shell.

If so we need to keep a good eye on badguy number one and also watch out for enemy witches/crew bailing out.

Give them one and only one chance to surrender.

We need Medivac, like RIGHT NOW.

Yeah, you might be able to wreck face when you're facing out-dated T-72s in an Abrams M1A1, but that was a pretty late development, and a large chunk of the army is gonna still be rocking Pattons and M1s with the 105mm, facing T-64s and T-80s, let alone shitloads of T-72s, T-62s and T-55s or ATGM-carriers the soviets fielded.

Yeah, pretty much.

NATO's plan in the event of being overrun by soviets was to use tactical nuclear weapons, and the soviets would have responded to that with strategic nuclear strikes.

And then you have a nice game of Global Thermonuclear War. If you want to see how that would play out, watch 'Threads' or 'The Day After', both are up in full on youtube.

You're torn. Half of you wants to give the Russians a chance to surrender, knowing that there can't be more than one or two left alive in either tank. The other half wants to immediately call in a CASEVAC and check out Mister Fister for survivors, though the prospect looks bleak.

You inhale deeply, reaching for your water bottle. A quick swig helps to clear your thoughts, setting things in priority. You have to act as if your people are already dead.

“Anderson, get some of your shooters around on them. Grab that linguist I know you've got and have him off them surrender. They get one chance, if they don't take it then mop 'em up. You'll have the five big guns in support. After that, get CASEVAC on the scene. Send your medic over to Rockfield and Patterson.”

“Solid, sir. Pressing now.”

From the viewports, you can't see him moving in the night, however you know he's doing his thing.

“Sir, I can't get any of the systems up. We're full mechanical.” Nicky says, trying to cycle his targetting computer. “I know it's your call, but we've taken almost 50% casualties. We're combat ineffective, sir.”

“Let me make that call, Nick. Just keep trying your computer.”

He nods, flipping the on/off multiple times.

Micheal, holding an arm limply, pushes his hatch open, helping to vent the acrid propellent smell from your cannon. From outside, you can hear the company linguist, Sergeant Long, shouting into the enemy vehicles. It's foreign what he's saying to you, but you remember him as being one of Norton's dismounts. They hadn't been close for too long, but you can feel his anger radiating outward. Maybe that's just the Russian he's hollering, though.

“Predator actual, sir. Wants to know the hold up.” Nicky says, passing up the radio handset.

“Say again, Chaos element, why are you stalled?”

>Wat say?

You take a deep breath.

“Predator actual, Chaos actual. Chaos element has hit a snag. Two bloc vehicles in blocking formation, crewed by sparkly elements. Both M-Kills, one possible C-Kill. I have two sparkly casualties, still checking their status. Chaos is at fifty percent effectiveness, say again, five zero percent combat effectiveness. How copy, over?”

On the other end of the radio, Garrison takes a second to process everything you just told him. He's scribbling madly on his notepad, checking and rechecking your position, and detailing Saudi elements to roll in your spot.

“Chaos actual, Predator actual copies all. Sit tight son, CASEVAC is on it's way. Out.”

You hand the handset back to Nicky just in time to watch Anderson pump another shot into the crew compartment of the lesser damaged tank. On the other side, Meaney lights his own shotgun off.

“Bad news, sir.” Anderson says, pumping a fresh round into his shotgun.

“Yeah. I know. I saw.” You reply, shaking your head.

“And Norton's gone.”

“I figured.”

It hits you harder than you thought it would. Norton had been a part of A company for longer than you had been in charge of it.

The sound of an approaching blackhawk quickly overpowers the other noises. The medics rush outward, freeing both Patterson and Rockfield from their strikers, pushing them on stretchers, and rushing them onto the waiting helicopter. You pop your hatch to a waiting Anderson.

“Guess we get to sit this one out for a while, eh sir?”

“Yeah. Guess so.”

“You gonna be alright, sir?” He sets a hand on your shoulder.

“We'll see. Gotta do other stuff first. How were they?” You ask, watching the helicopter fade into the night.

“Couldn't say, sir. Didn't see much bleeding, but I dunno about internal trauma or broken bones.”

“God damn. Hope it's worth it.”

Anderson shakes his head.

“So do I, sir. So do I.”
