You are Sonia Reynard, Attack Wing Leader and Knight of the House of Jerik-Dremine! You command the Third Attack Wing, a mixed unit of fast hard hitting Cruisers, Frigates and Corvettes.
Last time the station which has been acting as you home base in recent weeks was attacked by special forces. Believed to be working for a former Republic officer turned mercenary named Marson Edect, the enemy forces destroyed the station central core and one of the upper modules killing more than two hundred. You were wounded while fighting the enemy boarders and barely escaped with your life.
Intel is still conducting an investigation to determine how the enemy troops got aboard the station in the first place but you've since learned how they escaped. An emergency teleporter in storage was scheduled to be installed aboard a corvette and hasn't been recovered from the wreckage. Forensics teams found signs of the capsule on a planet the attackers must have based out of and are continuing their search for more clues.

After helping to relocate the remaining modules from the base you turned to the more immediate problem of hunting down Edect before he could launch another attack. Of three shipyards where the merc is suspected to be looking for a new fleet you decided to attack one responsible for construction of Battlecruisers.

Given the strength of the enemy force present you decided to wait until your two new escort carriers were completed before launching the attack. A Light Cruiser squadron and the Knight Commander's flagship and escort were the only other ships available to assist you. Given the option of waiting most of a week or going in before any more battlecruisers could be completed you chose to strike ASAP.

A fast attack run rapidly turned into a close quarters brawl around the station when you struck at the enemy ships. Removing the enemy Carrier from the field early on provided a major boost to your own starfighters once they joined the battle. Enemy point defense was limited allowing things to shift rapidly in your favour despite many of the tougher enemy ships being at an advantage in the close quarters fight. While the EX-K took damage when you tacked a fast battleship on your own it was enough to get your heavy strike team aboard. With luck they'll be able to disable the ship before it can run too far. It and others that haven't taken much in the way of engine damage are on the run. Others that have taken engine damage remain locked in combat tying up some of your ships.

"We still have ships trying to get out of the yard." Warns Mike as he swings his cruiser around to block one long enough to disable it. "Could use some help here."
Starfighters are attempting to disable the engines of the battlecruisers before they can escape their berths but the armor is tough to get through.

"Our bow deflectors are damaged. Do not recommend pursuit." Warns Kavos.

You see that Verilis and Kat have both joined the pursuit with their new if somewhat broken in cruisers. A good number of the starfighters are getting reorganised and some are headed off as well, while others keep an eye on the station.
>>

You see that Verilis and Kat have both joined the pursuit with their new if somewhat broken in cruisers. A good number of the starfighters from the main battle are getting reorganised to go after them as well.

"Lets not allow that other Battleship they were working on to escape." You decide, moving over to help Mike.

When you get over there you find that the slipway at the far end is empty.
"What the- Arron, where did it go?"

"I didn't detect a launch from this one." He claims and begins calling up sensor data from the other ships and reviewing it.

"There. Some nukes went off a minute or two ago and when the blasts faded it wasn't there anymore. We should have seen it launch even with the explosions."

Most modern cloaking shields attempt to emit radiation in the same wavelength on the opposite side of the ship they're being hit on. Given the damage fall off from nuclear explosions in a vacuum unless they detonate within the radius of the shield it should still be able to mimic the output. The same can not be said for beam weaponry. Cloaks cant match the output necessary to duplicate the beam and are unable to soak off the incoming energy. will begin to bleed energy in every direction giving away their position.

You mark part of the station on your console.
"Mass drivers, target the empty slipway at the end of the shipyard and open up."

"Aye sir, point defense firing."

The metal slugs fill space ahead of you as the eight turrets with line of sight open up on the empty section of the yard. Some fly straight through the gaps in the structural girders while others bounce off them.

"No impacts. On ships at least." Says Arron.

"Point defense shift fire into the space ahead of the shipyard." you order.

"Yes sir."

Kavos helps Arron set up a fire grid for the gunners, clearing sections closest to the base and expanding outwards.

"Possible contact. One of them deflected off something but I cant tell if it was a ship or debris."
An expanding spherical marker showing the possible source pops up on your HUD.

Considering this situation we should consider our option into expanding on missile warhead ammo. Something like a flack or burster warhead, aimed to be hell for missile clusters and space fighter squadrons, and a way to flush out cloaked ships in tight quarters or to deploy a temporary micro sensor net fast.
>>
"Kavos, upload a new fire grid to my system and to anyone else nearby. This is Reynard to any ships near my position, we have a possible cloaked Fast Battleship in the area."

Bringing the EX-K around you open fire with your remaining cannon. Mike, his wingmen and 3rd Squadron's fourth flight all open fire. It takes a second but soon one of the phase cannon beams seem to vanish.
"Detecting radiation. Its not much but it is there."

You change course towards the new marker. "All ships concentrate fire and watch for friendlies."

Two more beams vanish, then a dozen. Each time the radiation the cloak is giving off jump until finally it fails completely.
"This is Knight Lieutenant Sonia Reynard. Surrender immediately."

Out ahead of the battleship, beyond the gravity, well a Rovinar Silent Hunter decloaks and begins firing torpedoes towards you.

"People with armor up front." you calmly tell the others while reducing speed a bit. One bad hit to the bow could crack your ship into pieces. "Disable the battleship so it cant jump. All fire into its... starboard side it seems to have less armor."

Fourth Squadron's newest Cruiser takes one of the SP torpedo hits, the weapon blasting a chunk of armor free.
"We're alright sir." The pilot reports.

A cone of phase cannon fire focuses on the starboard engine pod, battering down the shield enough to cause damage. Torpedoes from your ships and some of the nearby starfighters hammer the shielding around the main body and starboard wing until at last they get through. More focused fire pops multiple sublight engine banks until the hefty ship has to reduce speed.

"There's a pair of Scarabs detaching from the Battleship's outer hull. They're headed for the edge of the gravity well."

The Battleship meanwhile turns back and opens fire with one of its completed heavy turrets.
>>
"They must be buying time for most of the crew to escape on the Scarabs." Says Mike.

"Sir we're receiving a signal from one of the Scarabs, audio only." says coms. You hit a button to listen in.

"Lieutenant Reynard, its too bad you didn't die when that station blew up. I was hoping at the very least you might get the message I was trying to send you."

"Marson Edect? I got the message fine, as did everyone else in our fleet. Give up now so that you wont die tired because one of us will get you and until then you'll just have to keep running."

The mercenary laughs. "Verbal sparring is wonderful and everything but you should know by now that actions speak louder than words. Its too bad you cant see me holding this detonator, I wouldn't have minded seeing your reaction."

Your attention turns to the battleship closing in on you.

"Everyone break! Break!"

You pull up and away as the other ships with you do the same... nothing happens. The scarabs reach the edge of the gravity well and jump along with the captured Rovinar ship. You turn back towards the battleship which is beginning to lose engine power.

Beyond it you see flashes coming from the station. Those flashes grow into fireballs which shatter the sections of the yard the battleships had been built in. Half of the station goes up sending four incomplete battlecruisers flying off into open space. Three of your ships are hit by the wreckage and take damage, the heavy station sections knocking down the shields of one frigate.

"Coms, tell the Commander we're going to need search and rescue teams. A lot of them."
>>
>>23130001
We could say fuck them, and go in hot pursuit.

At least the ships that are able to should try a FTL intercept. A silent hunter wont be much of a challenge in the close confines of a bubble, nor will some scarabs.
>>
>>23130001
Mike is currently looking after the incomplete fast battleship with plans to board it. While there isn't much in the way of weapons still on it there might be crew remaining that could do some damage given enough time. One third of your Wing are assisting the Commander with the pursuit of the other ships. It could be a few minutes before they make it back.

Plan out your damage control along with search and rescue efforts. Some of the ships and debris will soon be falling out of orbit and only about one third of your Wing are in a position to render assistance. What will you prioritize saving in terms of ships and personnel?

So, overall priority towards securing the crews of your ships, the shipyard/civilian engineers and the enemy crews. Section of the station that are believed to still have engineers trapped inside will need to be secured before they fall out of orbit meaning less ships can be rescued.

The enemy had Battlecruisers, frigates and corvettes present. You had Light cruisers, Attack cruisers, frigates and corvettes.

Prioritise the order in which these ships are recovered.

The Commander suggests recovery of ships from the House first, especially the cruisers. After that enemy starships which could be easily repaired. Crippled enemy ships and free floating sections of the station would get the lowest priority.

>>
>>23131602
>Be advised that the Commanders suggestion may invalidate the following part of prioritising rescue of personnel.

I voted for the Commander's suggestion on the survey, but saving lives should still take priority over salvage.
>>
You contact the Commander and ask for her input on the situation. After taking note of her suggestions and making sure that all enemy ships have been neutralised you get to work. House ships have to come first. You rescue teams wont have to worry about taps rigged to blow them to hell and back. You're forced to stay at the edges of the debris cloud rather than dive through it to help grab those in the most danger of being dragged down towards the surface. While the planet has a minimal atmosphere there is still enough gravity to make a crash landing problematic.

Spare Fighters help to herd escape pods from enemy ships off to a holding area where a few shuttles are doing checks of their integrity to make sure they'll last long enough for support ships to arrive. While the escape pods are more than capable of landing on the planet there's no guarantee that they would survive the hail of metal to follow.

Only a few minutes into operations the first ship strikes the surface. An attack corvette that had been cut in two after disabling one of your rookies. Shuttles and fighters continue to help in getting crews out but lack the power to stabilise the orbit of larger ships. The Commander's escorts soon appear over the horizon to assist but its too late for a pair of crippled battlecruisers. Half destroyed frigates join them along with the tons of scattered debris.

Within the hour all ships that can be saved are in a more stable higher orbit. Most of the ship crews were rescued except for those trapped aboard some of the larger ships that couldn't be reached in time. More ships from the training squadrons have arrived and begin loading escape pods into their small but still serviceable launch bays. The transports used to move refugees off of the station days ago are called in when the number of people having to be detained and screened becomes clear. Estimates are placed between twenty and twenty five thousand people between the ships and the survivors on the station.
>>
Quickly glancing over the damage reports it seems like nearly every ship in the Wing took damage of some kind. 3rd squadron got off very light as did the vast majority of 2nd but even they'll need some time in the shop. You lost ships in this one and rescue teams are being dispatched to check nearby habitable worlds.
The Light Cruiser squadron, able to make the best of the confusion caused by your attack took less damage overall though they did lose a ship or two themselves. Their armor will need to be repaired on many of them but that's a process less involved than replacing large sections of ship interiors.

>A full damage report on the Wing will be forthcoming.

As salvage ships begin the task of shuffling ships back to base you're contacted by the Commander.
"Lieutenant I'm rotating the Third Wing into reserve for a week, possibly two while you get repairs taken care on. It will also give you time to make sure your newest pilots are fully integrated."

Well it was bound to happen eventually. "I'll try to put the time to good use sir."

"The sections of the station responsible for fast battleship construction was completely destroyed. Intel and I believe that it was intentional to prevent us from gaining easy access to a powerful resource. As it stands we've captured two of the new designs relatively intact. Your Heavy Strike team were able to cripple the engines on one but we'd already partially destroyed several sections of her by then. It will take some time for our engineers to repair them let alone reverse engineer them."

>Anything to say about being moved to reserve, the Battleships or anything else at this time?
>>
>>23132505
Understood Ma'am. We still have a few mercs on roster, recommend they be transferred to a front line wing.
>>
>>23132505
I suggest that, while we're in reserve and our ships are being repaired, we do what we can to assist with processing captured personnel and ships. Maybe our own personal help isn't needed, but we can spare some marines at least.

We really need someone to keep hunting Marson Edect. Even if he isn't caught, keeping the pressure on could prevent him from mounting another attack on the station.
>>
>>23132505
Foward the data on the other shipyards to her, if we haven't already done so.

Other than that, it's probably good if our crews get some light duty/rest.

We could probably convince higher to put a bounty on him for gratuitous civilian casualties. I forgot to ask, did we get that repair yard on the moon mission? The one with the medium cruiser?
>>
>>23132709
>Bounty
True but given the rate at which most Houses and their fleets have been killing pirates in the area some members of the nobility are reluctant to put out more bounties as they could just hire a few more mercs at a lower cost.
After sending off a message about this though you're informed that given the threat posed by this individual they'll be putting up a bounty starting as 50k. Others are welcome to add to it. While not huge it could cover much needed operating expenses for some smaller bounty hunters or mercs.
Do you wish to add to it?

>Medium Cruiser, Medium Yard and Moon base
Yes you captured the Medium cruiser successfully. It's currently under repair at the nav station as its the safest place to do repairs on ships that big.
The yard itself you did not capture and even if you had its in rough shape. Your House does have both of the lunar defense bases which are being used as a bargaining chip, possibly for complete control of Surakeh or for something else later. If other parties refuse to deal the Commander has threatened to have the heavy guns removed to help protect other colonies the House controls. As this would severely compromise the moon base, the planet they orbit and the shipyard you suspect it shouldn't come to that.
>>
>>23133017
I'd suggest we put in 10k for information about Marson Edect's whereabouts, double if it leads to his capture or death.

It seems one of the Rookies were unable to teleport out. There could have been a problem with the system not activating, the bridge might have been destroyed before it had time to trigger or any number of things. It takes a few days to find all of them but soon they're back.
Two of the pilots and their command crews, one rookie and Rasi Jakande the pilot of 4th squadron's Journeyman, were picked up by shore patrol on Tourta. Apparently they were able to find a relatively safe bar while on planer which they've reccomended to the training squadrons.

With the ships under repair and crews planning for downtime in the not too distant future you've received requests from several of your pilots. The core group of 1st tier knight candidates are planning to spend a great deal of time in training. Likewise you're considering using one of the station's briefing rooms to get some basic stuff across with the second and third tier people.

On the second day a package arrives for you... and it's not an explosive device! After what happened to the station and that shipyard well you dont want to take any chances.
The package contains a pair of boxing gloves and a note.

"Don't forget we have unfinished business. If you need to delay pick a time and date."
>>
>>23134273
Say in three days?
>>
With the down time the engineers want to take the chance to rip open a few of the ships built by pirates and smugglers to make sure they're structurally sound. The majority of the Wing will be repaired on only a few days so it shouldn't impact security severely if there is an attack.
Aside from the boxing match you also have the better part of two weeks to make plans for.

-R&R
You pilots wouldn't mind a day or two off
-Knights of House Jerik-Dremine
All of your Knight candidates need more training. You could assist the instructors with this.
-Weapon trajectory analysis program
The Rookies more than anyone need more training though there are a few veterans who haven't gotten the hang of using it.
-Squadron Level Training Exercises
-Wing Level Training Exercises
-Mining Op
Once repaired you could send some of your ships out to escort the mining barge. Refined metals that aren't used by House forces are sold off to allies for much needed cash.
-Black Market Exploration
Visit Tourta. If what you're looking for isn't for sale there they can tell you where to get it. The locals are not used to uniforms so watch your back.

Kavos meets you at the holobooths and sets up a two player sparring session.

"I am getting too old to try this in real life so we use holographics. As you know from school Dro'all are more..."
"Flexible?" you suggest.
"That one is more polite than mine. Yes, our bones and supportive structures have different construction and are not as brittle as humans but also not as strong. Its why most Houses don't care for high gravity worlds. We can still put on a great deal of muscle weight though."

"So, any weak points I could use in a boxing match?"

"Head and neck are always problems for any humanoid. Why haven't we found more of those weird balls made of spikes or limbs like Second Wing did in the Smugglers Run? Anyways, against a fit Dro'all... you can either try to stun them with head hits like you would against a Human or try to exhaust them with hits to the torso. Enough strong hits to the torso will completely exhaust most Dro'all, knocking the wind out of them. It can take quite awhile to recover."

"So basically just hit them a lot until they're tired and hope I don't wear myself out?"

Kavos pauses and thinks it over. "Pretty much."

You put the palm of your glove to your face. "This is not exactly what I was thinking of in terms of weak points."

"Sorry, I know weak points for killing but not for boxing. I have good news for you though, you said that the person you're fighting was female before the last match?"

"Yes, why?"

"Dro'all are stronger on average when in female phase. It should make the fight easier if he is male."

You and Kavos box a few rounds. Nothing serious, just light practice to get back into the feel of the basic movements. While your XO did box a little bit back when she was part of a gunnery crew its been a very long time and she freely admits to not being that good.

After Kavos calls it quits claiming to have paperwork you go up against a simulation. The low level ones are pathetic but are mostly intended to train you in specific elements. Blocking, attacking, all the basic stuff. You skip ahead a bit to the more realistic ones, though its still listed as an easier program.

In other news there's a message from Sylvan. His lawyer just finished negotiating a contract with Halide Inc for him (or his likeness) to appear in Liberators of Gesaur. As you'd been made aware its a propaganda film being labeled as a historical drama to drum up support for the Houses vs would be rebels.

"Reynard, I'm surprised you're still holding out on the Halide people. My Lawyer came up with a good deal for them which I then said I was having second thoughts over. After giving them another day or two to sweat it out I added a request for collectible action figures. They went for it. The ads are going to have an image of when I was power armor surfing on top of that tank in the assault. Anyways you should talk to them soon. Their agents were a bit freaked out by the station exploding the other day so they want to get the hell off the front lines."

Hello, I've been reading the archives, catching up for awhile now.
Great Job so far, just finished Wing Commander 18 - a few questions,
Chief Mechanic Ahani Daska of Dreminth has no relation to either Kavos or Daska, right? It's unlikely, but I have to ask.

Do we still have the enough-to-cover-a-small-corvette cloak we salvaged? The Dominion seems to have a distinct lack of Cloaks, and tricking out a stealth corvette with some prototypes of all the Reynard technologies ideas could be useful.

Actually I think we should go on a shopping trip.
It would do us good to be able to bu various useful stuff. Like a new dress, shoes and the necessary attire for possible civilian balls, where coming in uniform might not be the best idea.

A spring arm gun. You know the type. Small revolver or double barrelled pistol , that will jump in your hand from within your coat at a moments notice.

Made perhaps of ceramics so it wont be detected on scans. Bullets too.

Perhaps some very unobtrusive comms in jewellery, or memory sticks in pendants, that are loaded perhaps with some inventive hacking software.

A ceramic pen knife perhaps...

Some poisons and their antidotes...

Establishing some contacts and seeing if we can get a new buisness opportunity... you know the usual stuff.

"Sonia they got it!" Shouts Mike as he runs up to you on the station promenade.

Mike lowers his voice.
"The cloaking shield from the fast battleship. It looks like it was built for a Rovinar Battleship. The pirates must have found or stolen it years ago because none have gone missing recently. Its big so I dont know how well it would work on that scrap Silent Hunter."

You glance around to make sure nobody is paying attention.
"Who else knows?" You ask him.

"Me, my marines and some engineers with Intel."
"Lets keep it that way."

>suptg link
Thanks I was just looking through my files.

Unfortunately it wasnt a cloaking shield that was salvaged that time but enough scrap to build a small ship. Dedicated cloaked ships have systems that make drive emissions more difficult to detect and also assist in the operation of the cloaking shield.

The Fast Battleship was incomplete and did not have any of these systems completed. Outfitting starships to perform Hunter killer duties against cloaked ships is difficult and expensive meaning even your Blackbird was having a hard time until you pinged it with phase cannon fire.

Right, but now with the cloaking shields and the scans on the Silent Hunters we will be able to pursue this for proper dedicated stealth ships.

Until now we only had reads on their system emissions and perhaps some performance parameters recordings, to know in what range we need the systems to function. Now we have the cloaking shields to reverse engineer. Its a start. Not enough , but a stepping stone to stealth ships 0.5.

They are now perhaps on generation 1.5 or 2.5

House R&D ,yes, but that does not stop us to assemble our own personal R&D consortium to play second fiddle once they get to it. You show her the scan readings Duncan recorded.
"How did you- nevermind its not important. Our House has little or no experience with cloaking technology. We would need to bring in experts or go to a House that has such people. Then everyone would know how we aquired such information. Even if the other Houses didnt the Rovinar would. Things would not go well for us after that" She pauses and looks at you. "Five years."

"Sir?"

"This data will be burried, figuratively if not litterally, for five years. That should allow time to put contacts in place and make it look as though we'd recovered such information from another source. This level of cloaking technology is such an advanced breakthrough it could well be unmatched until the end of the century. We have time. Be aware I will not be able to reward you for this but I will keep it in mind."

Well, if we do so we should look into mass producing the battery powered armour and perhaps improving it a bit. Having almost all house forces be power armoured will ensure a higher level of security.

I am unsure how much we would need to fund such a endeavour and how many strings we would have to pull to ensure it gets bought and used...

Perhaps getting the deal and taking a hefty % in all the tag along from the movie might be a good idea to secure it...

>Discussion/Speculation
Yes, now that your House has a real working cloak (if an older model) it's somewhat feasible for the scans you took to be used within the next five years.
Mind you, having a captured working model vs mass producing the things are entirely different. Its rumoured that the Ruling House and members of the Seven have some cloaked ships but they're assumed to be few in number. The House R&D budget as previously stated is well beyond being maxed out.

You decide to put in a bit more time practising the day before the fight. While you don't pick up nearly as much new stuff it does let you work through a few things. The higher level sims you try out use combinations of attacks and feint and by then end of it all you think you've got a better understanding of what your opponent could throw at you in the coming fight.

The next day you show up for the scheduled match. Your friends and senior officers from the Wing are present along with some mechanics and engineers. The Chief waves at you from the other side of the room after entering but otherwise doesn't make any attempt to interact with you at this time.

A referee appears and checks with you and the Chief before you're told to get ready.
"Audience members thank you for attending." Says the ref into a sound pickup. "This is a bit smaller gather than I'm used to seeing but that works fine. Today you'll be seeing a good old boxing match. The rules are simple. One on one with 3 Rounds each three minutes in duration. Contestants will have one minute's time between rounds."
The announcer looks off to the side at someone signalling him.
"Make that five minutes between rounds. Using your fists with gloves are the only acceptable weapon.
No wrestling or hugging.
If a combatant goes down they are to be allowed 10 seconds to get back up.
No hanging on the ropes, and keep it clean!

Our combatants will be Knight Lt Sonia Reynard versus Chief Mechanic Ahani Daska!"

You look to your Second Squadron leader. "Daska, are you related to the Chief I'm fighting?"

"No sir, its a common enough family name, my parents are just weird and used it as a given name."
"Oh."
>>
"Combatants enter the ring!"

You finally get a look at your opponent. Chief Ahani looks to have lost ten kilos or more, but none of the missing weight was muscle. The Dro'all male is still quite a bit larger than you.

"I see you've been making a name for yourself, and it even looks like you've put on muscle of your own. Maybe that time I spent training won't have been a waste after all."

The first round is... honestly you've had worse. With the number of times you've been shot, stabbed or knocked clear across a room by one thing or another you'd think a padded glove wouldnt be such a big deal. Getting in close you attempt reduce the advantage the Chief has over you in terms of reach. You get knocked around a few times and find yourself on the defensive.
While you keep the Chief from landing any more real hits you're unable to go on the offensive yourself. Despite not doing that well you still get a good measure of what Ahani is capable of. You're still a tiny bit faster, which is good but he may be able to take heavier hits more easily than you.
You finish out the round without taking any more real hits but the Chief is still in the lead due to the ones he landed early on.

>What hand is he favoring?
You initially thought the left hand early in the first round, until later on when realising the Chief must be ambidextrous and was leading you on.

With the bell you get back into it, this time keeping much more on the move. you start off much like before, trying to avoid being hit, but dont allow yourself to be stuck on the defensive like before. You don't overextend or expose yourself to get off heavier hits, just landing the ones you know will get through. Most target the chest and torso, with the idea of tiring out your opponent, only the occasional jab towards the head.
You still take a few taps here and there but you're graining momentum even if its starting to tire you out a bit from all of the moevemnt. Just before the end of the round you go all out and land a flurry of blows to the head. The Chief eventually is knocked back by one and goes down. Seeming a bit stunned it takes a second or two before he can get to his feet again. The bell dings before you can resume.

You each sit down for your few minute break between rounds.
"Nice hit." Says Alex from the sidelines. "Is he doing okay?" He asks, nodding towards the Chief.

"I dunno. We'll find out in a few minutes."

The Chief seems to have shaken off any ill effects before the start of Round 3 as unlikely as that may seem. Tough sob.

Both of you go all out at the beginning of the third round, trying for an early knockout. When that doesnt seem to be working out you switch to trying to land more hits to the torso to tire the Chief out. One things is for sure, without the extra day you spent training you'd have lost this round by now.
Both of you are tiring out fast from the hard work but you're landing slightly more hits. Most of the ones that you take are glancing blows. The Chief tires out just a bit faster than you do before the bell. Arms burning from the exertion and the hits you manage to get one good hit to the head through Ahani's defense though its nothing like the one you ended round two with.

After the bell you ask your opponent if he wants to go a fourth round but its clear he wouldn't be able to recover in time and you've won just by of number of hits.
The Chief, winded though still standing if barely, concedes defeat.

"Round Three goes to Sonia Reynard! We have our winner!" Announces the referee.

Both of you shake hands after a few minutes to recover and wish each other well. You overhear that Alex lost a bet to Mike over the outcome of the match. The others present that had bet in your favour are pleasantly surprised.

"Is it okay to show recordings among the ship crews within the Wing sir? Word about the match seems to have leaked out a day or two ago." Daska informs you.

It takes off and lands just like a plane, and when in the upper atmosphere its jets turn into rockets. Most reassuringly, the only particularly revolutionary component (the engine pre-cooler) just passed all tests with flying colours.

You head over and ask the Chief for permission to distribute video from the fight amongst crews of Third Wing ships. Obviously there's no way to prevent it from getting outside that group once people see it.
"I'm not thrilled about it but people will hear about the fight anyways. Go ahead. Thanks for asking instead of just going ahead and doing it like most of your station would. I'll remember that."

Later that day the less damaged ships in your Wing have been repaired. There are still the batch that have been opened up for more thorough work and those that were more badly damaged. The berths are also being choked with scraped or crippled ships the engineers hope to salvage. Five more Standard Frigates will need complete engine replacement and so are in line to be upgraded with an engine layout similar to the smuggler Frigates in the Wing. This is going to take more than a week. There should be some more salvaged attack corvettes available as well.

Three of your veteran pilots are without ships at the moment and hope to get hold of some of the frigates next week. until then they're prepared to make use of the remaining corvettes in the ship reserve.

The Mercenaries are prepared to transfer out to another unit. Their pilots will be leaving behind the ships you'd assigned them. Amusingly enough one of them is in debt to the House due to damage taken in battle and has been signed to an extended escort contract as a result.
The one assigned to third squadron managed to come through with little to no damage. A good thing too considering he was piloting a Jenning. The merc and his company would like to purchase the under armored assault corvette from the House. As its a ship you salvaged and belongs to your unit the decision is up to you.

Unexpected but done unless there are objections. That does give me an idea for a charity boxing tournament but it can wait.

Training for your people is ongoing, Repairs are underway, and your boxing match is taken care of. Deciding that with the salvaged frigates the unit should be set for ships you approve the sale of the Jenning. Darn ships never did have reliable armor and with the real assault corvette prototypes now undergoing field testing its not worth troubling the engineers with another conversion. Money in the bank that the House can use to hire more mercs or pay off loans.

Next on the list is the appointment with the Commander. While the repairs haven't been entirely completed you decide to get this out of the way now rather than having it loom over you. There is a bit of a wait but its nothing major. You notice the Intel officer Mike had mentioned was in charge of looking after the cloaking shield leaving before you're let in.

"Lieutenant, I wasn't expecting you for another day or two but I suppose this works out fine too. I wanted to talk over your tactics in the last battle, but first of all congratulations are in order. You were able to locate the cloaked battleship before it escaped. Even with it being in an incomplete state I'm sure that Mr Edect would have found some way of using it to carry out attacks. Its unfortunate their other ship and the FTL equipped scarabs were able to escape. Rescuing our stranded ships and crews were a priority but in the future that may change if he and others like him become too dangerous to be allowed to escape."

"Sir?"

"Sometimes doing the right thing is a luxury Lieutenant. Rescuing elements of the station crews still trapped on sections falling from orbit meant we were able to recover less of the crippled ships. I'm not saying you did the wrong thing but... there are consequences from a military perspective."

>>
>>23152877
I can understand the argument the commander is making. We were wasting military ships on s&r duties while hostile elements needed to be engaged.

Obviously, we can't afford to do that too often. So, what would it cost us to run a semi-civilian/merc/volunteer squad of ships specially quipped for these duties?
>>
"Well, onward to strategy." She activates a holographic emitter in the arm of her chair and an image of your last battle site pops up.

"I've need looking through the reports of your most recent missions in command of the 3rd Wing. Your plan for attacking the shipyard was solid enough and I saw no reason to question it given your history of success. All the same brawling with battlecruisers rarely ends well. Razors as you know are most dangerous at close range but given the threat posed by the longer ranged heavy weapons on the Battleships its understandable you would want to fight from their blind spots. Were it not for our numerical superiority it could have been far more dire though.
Do remember that high speed single pass attack runs can be effective in disrupting enemy formations. Some may even attempt to pursue you drawing them away, as you've used to good effect on occasion. Nor does an attack need to be launched from the closest edge of a gravity well."

She changes the view to show an arrow approaching the planet from the far side. Accelerating through a slingshot passing through the position of the station defenders before flying off into space again. The time spent above the horizon is the same if not less than that if they'd come straight in from the gravity well. More importantly the attacker isn't forced to slow down or risk overshooting into the planets surface.
"This can be just as effective with starfighter forces which are faster, smaller and harder to detect. Especially when backed up by ECM support to suppress monitoring satellites on the far side of a planet. Obviously these will not work all of the time and if improperly prepared for can endanger your fighters."
>>
>>23153531

"As for use of starfighters..." You CO pauses in thought.
"Its just that I've been in communication with Baron Archivald and he's been concerned about your methods of fighter deployment. It takes time for the Escort Carriers to deploy their squadrons and for those squadrons to then catch up if the carrier has been forced to pull away to stay beyond effective weapons range.
A fighter wave slingshoting around the planet could have struck at the Carrier as well as softened up the other ships in time for the arrival of your attack ships. Again there are drawback to any such plan but do try to keep in mind the time delay for fighters launching."

She chuckles. "Listen to me, an armchair general. Whatever you take from these suggestions remember this; A good plan violently executed now is better than a perfect plan executed next week. You're already doing well."
>>
>>23153782
If there's anything that defines Sonia, it's immediate, violent execution.

"Ah yes the battleships. Both are awaiting repair as we figure out what to do with them. The engineers are doing their best to make them space worthy again to make it easier to relocate them but they're not to be repaired to full readyness just yet. We lack other battleships or battlecruisers that could effectively mount the cloaking device and its far too large for the smaller ship the engineers were hoping to build out of scrap from the Rovinar vessel.
Ultimately we may end up finishing one with support systems for the cloak but until then they need to be studied in detail. With that section of the station destroyed its our best bet at reverse engineering them. I'm already being bombarded with requests from interested parties wanting to look them over. The Kavarians obviously want to see what pirates are doing with descendants of their starship designs. I was far more surprised that CCD wants to look the ships over for to borrow elements for their own upcoming battleship design."

"CCD is getting into the battleship market?" Really you figured their bulk cruisers were already big enough fire magnets.

"Yes and they're offering the House an entire squadron of their new design when it goes into production, provided we give them one of the two largely intact ships. Just for two weeks studying it they're offering us one."

>What say?
>>
>>23154269
Too good to be true.
>>
>>23154269

A risky offer to accept. For all we know they could unload a squadron of untested deathtraps on us, hoping to refine it after we find the shortcomings.

Will any of the requests actually provide a reliable benefit?

And were all of those battleships outfitted with cloaking systems?
>>
"Quite. While CCD are known to adhere to their contracts rather fervently I'm still concerned with handing them one of the most advanced battleship designs we've ever encountered. If not for the phase cannon blind spot in its aft arc I would say it's nearly a match for the design Aries produces for the Terrans. The Barons and nobles back home will have to deliberate on it for some time though I'm sorely tempted to allow some of their engineers on board under heavy guard."

>>23154498
"Unlikely. Any contract the House would agree to would require production level designs as payment, and CCD's business interests with the other powers would falter if an entire squadron of their ships were found to be faulty.

>Will any of the requests actually provide a reliable benefit?
"On that I'm uncertain. Any returns for helping the Kavarians are doubtful if relations were to sour after the war. CCD would just as quickly sell starships to our potential enemies."

>And were all of those battleships outfitted with cloaking systems?
"Just the one. The few people of interest we were able to take alive from the yard said it was being custom built to mount the cloak which Edect provided. He likely acquired it for the Rovinar Battleship that was part of the station fleet."
>>
>>23153782
>Baron Archivald worried about our carrier/fighter tactics
He should probably be more worried when that slap he gave us over his fighter returns to him.
Dick.

>>23154705

Inclined to agree with the commander on CCD. That battleship can probably get us more by being put into our expeditionary fleet.

Has there been any word on allied forces willing to strike those other two ship yards? I imagine the Terrans wouldn't mind being able to snag a few of those in-progress Lance class mediums from the pirates. Or simply being able to destroy them before they can actually be a threat.

Kind of zoning out. Hasn't been the greatest week.
Anything else to talk with the Commander about?

If not some people have suggested going with Linda on a girly shopping trip. Tourta would be an obvious destination given that you could also check the black market while on planet thereby justifying the excursion. Areas of Surakeh are no longer under quarantine so its an option too.
The station shops and stores have not reached the point where there would be large amounts of civilian options. Something to do with explosions being bad for business

>>23154879
Inter fleet chatter is a mess at the moment due to an enemy counter attack. 1st Wing should be back from its special assignment soon and until then the Commander wants the bulk of your Wing at base. All House assets are guarding claimed worlds or bases until the main taskforce can get the situation under control. A Kavarian super heavy squadron and support will arrive in the area in a few days to assist the expeditionary forces.
>>
>>23155005

Does the Commander believe that the boarding party and that bounty hunter "detective" may have exploited similar methods or persons to access the station or possibly gain credentials?

While their objectives were seemingly separate, perhaps there is some common corrupt or traitorous house member or agent. Or the bounty hunter could have passed information to the assault team about unsecured areas?

Keep calm and prevent further incidents

Actually intel has figured out how they were able to get aboard over the past few days. The House is being careful not to throw away the old standard corvettes as they still make up a good portion of the fleet. Still, with the lack of front line service their numbers haven't exactly been dropping. Many are being used by the training squadrons but others are being given to allied Houses on a sort of lend lease deal. A squadron of these corvettes were stolen at a hand off and one of them still had security access codes. Intel is attempting to trace the remainder and double checks of the new codes are being done.

Suggestions:
-Try to establish weekly training exercises with Chief Mechanic Ahani Daska.
It should help relieve some stress, and making friends outside our immediate circle of coworkers is probably a good idea.
-Check up on Vista and the other AIs.
The Terrans didn't seem too pleased by the deal we negotiated. Just want to make sure they're alright.
-Ask our armorer if he has some side projects we could throw a few ten thousand credits at. He seemed quite competent and might have some decent low cost ideas.
-Try to find out if that friendly clone from the ball managed to make it. He seemed to be an honest and nice guy, I'd like to know what happened to him.
-Collect information about Dad's old business. Why did he sell it? Maybe we can buy it back and get it into shape again, so he won't have to stay with the military too long.

A bracelet would be too small. The best setup for wearing one would essentially be finger less gloves with a powerpack on your forearm.

>a normal looking utility belt for the grappler
Okay. The smart grapple can also be mounted on the forearm of most armor types.
>and shoes with hidden features, like magnetic clamps or something that should stop us from flying around in low gravity.
Shouldn't be too hard to find.

Your father was a merchant and trader at possibly one of the worst points in history. Because of piracy trade was taking heavy hits and only the larger companies with sizable fleets, military assets or experienced smugglers were able to turn a profit. Many similar small businesses collapsed. Economic stresses within the House following the Battle of Loran II was the straw that broke the camel's back.

We should find some gifts for our family. Some souvenirs for mom and dad, and something safe and nonthreatening for our sister, so she won't get in trouble if she takes it to school. Also, I assume we could record a video message on disc, so that we could have a longer message than is normally possible over interstellar coms.

The broker contacts you in an hour and forwards the information you payed for. Many of the richest smugglers on the planet left days before your Wing arrived to lay claim to it. The former administrator also had plans to do so but when he didn't check in with his crew at the arranged time they fled without him.
One of the islands in the northern hemisphere has a deep bunker complex that the crew used as a storage center for supplies and equipment. Odds are good they did not leave with everything but given their history the place is almost certainly protected by automated sentry guns. None of the locals have any intrest in risking their lives for what may or may not be in there.
NOTE: Some smugglers are returning after hearing word that the planet is supposed to be a free port. Someone may return to clear out the bunker if you do not.

That's not a bad suggestion. In fact, we should get more than one, because having more stealth troopers behind us would have made a lot of our ground/boarding missions easier.

>team

Us and Ecord on point, Heavy Strike Team behind us.

I hope sentry guns really are the greatest opposition we will face, because I don't want to find out firsthand how powered armor will stand up against a monofilament grid trap.
>>
>>23162478

I imagine having an intrusion specialist [power cell armor? possibly recon armor?] with camo would be insanely deadly.
>>
>>23164501
Camo can improve the effectiveness of a lot of different combat roles. IIRC, the sniper that took out our opponent on Gesaur had camo, but since we mostly do boarding actions, snipers are somewhat rare.

If the camo system could be substantially upsized to hide vehicles, even small shuttles, that would be neat. It would be less effective than an actual cloaking device, but even in space, gunnery seems to depend a lot on visual targeting. The ability to make starfighters disappear from normal sight would be valuable.

Even on a much smaller scale, if we could do something like hide a ship's weapons or project a decoy hull, we could pull off some pretty startling acts of deception.
>>
For the abandoned base crawl, we should call in the power cell team and the jump-jet armor guy if he is back.

Hopefully, we can use our camo to bypass the automated defenses, gain access to the control room(s) and disable most of them via auto/remote intrusion. What we can't disable, our power cell teams take out with smoke cover and heavy weapons.

Keeping this thread bumped instead of giving me time to pester shopaholic relatives into writing the scene.

"So, while we're shopping I'll just keep an eye out for holographic camouflage." You tell Linda as you walk through a mall. It's a short distance from the markets and while only half of the stalls looked to be in use on the way in you're sure a few hours will be enough to do a thorough search of those in this city.

"No." Replies Linda as she leads both of you into an upscale store with some of the most expensive looking clothing and jewellery you've seen on the plant. You visited a similar but much smaller store like this on another of your visits.
"You're just going to go and look for more guns, toys or other utilitarian junk the moment we leave this store, I know it."

You shrug and admit it. "I already bought a dress the first time we visited this planet."

"And how many times have you worn it?" she asks knowing full well the answer.

Other than trying it on you haven't. Most of the time you're in your duty uniform, running around in armor or some combination. In most formal situations a dress uniform decked out in your campaign ribbons and medals is more appropriate. Clothing just isn't something you'll end up using unless its been upgraded to resist bullets.

"You're not getting out of shopping until you've bought something you'll actually wear or use." concludes Linda, finishing her rant.

The bulk of the store is filled with clothing, specifically the frilly dresses that were just becoming popular before the war. Well that's less you'll need to look through. A circular section filled with display cases makes up the center of the room. Half of it is set up with jewellery and ornaments while the other holds displays for cosmetics and perfumes. There are other sections along the walls but you cant make out what's back there from your current position.

>What buy?

>>
>Helplessly take Linda's advice.
>Do they have any watches?

You head over to the jewellery section to take a look.
Precious stones from all over fill the cases in dozens if not hundreds of colours and shapes. Those items with diamonds are cut the cleanest for whatever reason. The most expensive ones you see are made with an oddly coloured crystal.
"Why are these so expensive?"

"They're made of Draconite from a few systems over." Explains the woman behind the counter.

After saying you've never heard of the stuff before she explains its a nickname the local miners have given to ore containing the rare element needed for drive cores. When you involuntarily take a step back she goes on to explain that its not hazardous in its current form.

They have rings embedded with the stuff along with necklaces, earrings and even watches. Most of the watches are a bit gaudy, though some of the diamond ones look alright.

Off on the far end you see one case marked with hazard warnings.
"What are those?" You ask one of the attendants.
"Poison tipped rings and other dangerous weapons. Customers are not allowed to handle them within the store."
>>
So, anything you'd like or take a look at other options?

>>23188725
>Oh, whatever happened to that cloaking unit our heavy strike team was supposed to get?
I remember it being discussed but it never actually happened. Attempting to requisition one would be expensive at the very least. Using your favour with the Rovinar to get one or more was heavily frowned upon by several players as then they would have known we had some. After the whole thing in Lat'tham space the Terrans and Rovinar most certainly know you do have the one now.
Any of the others discussed in this thread are for starships or devices you haven't bought yet.

Linda walks by with couple pairs of shoes and notices what you're looking at.
"I cant take you anywhere can I?"

They're available in several styles, from ones that are fairly obvious about what they're for to those with hidden pop out spikes. Some of the hidden types either use jewels or engraving to hide their true purpose.
The rings aren't just limited to poison, some have pop out monofilament blades.

With that out of the way you head into the markets with Valeri. Linda opts to remain behind to work out a business deal with one of the clerks after comparing the prices here with that of the market data from Surakeh. With the quarantine there have been few smugglers or merchants willing to go near the planet and for good reason.

"So, we're looking for someone selling camouflage. Lets keep an eye out for fuel cells while we're at it." You add.

A pair of marines that you'd asked to also have a look contact you after nearly two hours. After taking directions you reach the stall where your men are waiting. The shop is filled with various devices from repulsor belts and harnesses to make work on high gravity worlds easier to decoy projectors and other more mundane things.

"What can I interest you in?" Asks the human in charge.

"Holographic camouflage."

"Ooh, that's expensive. Sure you wouldnt rather have a couple of these decoy projectors? They're a hot seller at the moment. Real popular."

"Just the camo is fine."

He shakes his head in dismay and tells you the price. "Twohundred." He pauses then adds. "Thousand"

"Excuse me? Two hundred thousand?! You could almost buy a starship for that!"

"Everything short of the drive plates perhaps. You paying or not?"

You do not currently have that much cash clear for spending at the moment. You would need to pull money from some of your investments.

The merchant demonstrates that the device does work though he doesn't keep it turned on for long.
"How long can it stay on before it runs out of power or overheats?" You ask him.

"This particular example has been tested at a solidly consistent three hours, or four before overheat."

You attempt to over emphasize just how unimpressed you are in an attempt to get hte price down. "That's it? I've seen models that can run on backup power for five hours and take just as long to overheat."

"Its a buyers market and these beauties are hard to find. Look, I'll drop the price by say... eighteen thousand. How does that sound? And don't worry if you need to come back, I'm here for three more days."

"Well... it is less complicated than making someone vanish. I know people that could do up a custom order for you for say... sixty thousand?"

"Kavos, I'd like you to move the EX-K into position where you can offer us fire support with the Mass Drivers in a worst case scenario. Send the LST and the Shuttles down a safe distance away from the island."
"Understood. We will be in position in a few minutes."

After being picked up you suit up on the shuttle then link into the external sensors to watch what's going on. As your ships approach the island they drop to the deck to reduce the likelihood of being spotted until the last minute. The LST reduces speed, falling back far enough that it wont give you away.
When you're done here you'll have the engineers see about mounting the holo projector on one of the shuttles. If it can be taken on and off quickly enough it could certainly be a big help in the future.

"Island is in view, no obvious shore defenses." reports the shuttle pilot.

The shuttles split up and over the next few minutes circle the island taking better scans.
"Outer sections of the island look clear. Taking us in."
Moving in closer both craft continue to take readings. Low ridge lines a short distance inland forms the walls of several valleys with a pair of extinct volcanoes rising up closer to the center. The shuttle briefly peeks up above one ridge then hits the deck again.
"We've been pinged. Setting down on the outer side of the ridge."

The LST is able to approach the beach on one side of the island without exposing itself to fire. They dispatch a trio of repulsor equipped LRV's who soon reach your position.

"Automated defenses?" Asks Ecord.

"Looks that way."

well, after we raid it we sure as hell could reposition those defences, and perhaps have them used by operator.

The bunker and defences would at least reduce costs for putting up a secondary base on the planet, and they are far enough from anything that will allow them to survive in case of rebellion or invasion.
>>
With camo turned on you scout ahead of the Marines, just getting a rough idea of what could be within the nearest valley. It isn't long before you find Camo netting covering a sensor array, most likely the one that pinged the shuttle. Farther in there are particle beams aimed skyward, dug into the back sides of hills and short cliffs likewise covered in camo netting. There are no signs of weapons set up to counter ground vehicles or infantry so far. Marking their positions you keep moving towards the center of the island. Marines report they've rigged the weapons and sensors found so far with explosives should it be necessary to blow them.

Closer to the center of the island where the broker has the entrance to the bunker complex marked there are abandoned antique artillery pieces. Despite a layer of rust and obvious damage the smugglers still covered them with netting before they left. Possibly worried the equipment could be spotted from orbit?

Making good time you reach the center of the island and find a cave opening that's been widened enough to allow larger shuttles passage. Structural supports have also been added to strengthen the ceiling. At the back of the cave you find a small mining vehicle parked in front of the back wall. It doesn't look like they've even finished digging out this cave let alone a bunker.

>What do?

Also, do you destroy the outer defenses or try to disable them?

>>
>>23200627
Disable, we have the perfect setup now for a new base for our house and maybe for us as well.
>>
Looking around the cave you shrug and head back outside.

"This is Reynard. We might as well start dismantling the defenses I've marked. It looks like they're all positioned to shoot at aerospace forces. Also, try and figure out where the guns are drawing their power from."

Will you go back and help the marines find and clear the outer defenses, keep searching the rest of the island interior or do something else?
>>
>>23200705

As we've very limited skills that aren't destruction-based, we should recon the area further and try to locate anything else.

oh, and if possible we need to get images of those antique guns to our mass-driver gunners, weren't they artillery nuts? Perhaps we've stumbled upon something worth fixing up and reselling.
>>
>>23200735
Good catch. I like this idea.
>>
>>23200735
I'm sure our artillery boys would love that.
Time to search the area for any other secret things they might have left behind....like how they are powering the their defenses.
>>
Heading back over to the old artillery you take an image of it and send it back up to the ship. "Kavos ask the artillery techs to take a look at these. I want to know if they're worth anything or can be restored.

The marines meanwhile disconnect the sensor array and two of the guns.

"Sir, there are cables running underground to provide power and remotely control the weapons and sensors. They're all headed in the general direction of the center of the island."

"Copy that. Keep pulling those guns."

You start searching the area but the cables must be burried quite well because there are none exposed near you. The sonar on your suit is set up to detect movement from enemies and wont penetrate the ground to give you an idea where the cables might be. You'll have to wait until the guns are cleared before a shuttle or the LST can land and deploy engineers with ground sonar or sensors that can penetrate the surface.

Any ideas or will you just search aimlessly?

"Not if the shielding on them was military grade." replies one of the marine specialists.

A minute later the marines have redirected the sensor array and hooked one of the guns back into its power supply with plans to trigger it manually. "Firing!"

A trio of particle beams flash skyward from one of the gun emplacements. A second later the tech specialist using the sensor array contacts you.

>>
Heading back into the cave it looks unchanged. Picking up a rock you toss it towards the back wall. Rather than bouncing off is disappears, causing the false image to shimmer slightly before correcting.
"Smart."

Unholstering your plasma pistol you turn off your own camo and brace yourself. The superheated beam of metal causes the emitter to overload producing a fireball that momentarily fills the cave. With the fire clears you can make out a vehicle grade elevator two dozen meters back.
"This is Reynard, I'm okay. I want Ecord and half the heavy team at my position ASAP. Any spare marines and engineers from the shuttles and LST keep working on disabling those guns."

Heading to the elevator you look over the side down the shaft. Your rangefinder shows that it's a 400m drop. A long way down if say, the lift was sabotaged.

Most of the smoke has cleared when your backup arrives. The specialist with the team gets to work checking the lift.
"Looks fine."

The Sergeant Major suggests the two of you take the elevator down and stop just before the bottom were you can then proceed inside while cloaked.

>>23201758

>>
>>23202008
Sounds like a good precaution to take.
>>
For safeties sake you have the specialist send the elevator down then back up to be sure it wont fail.

Making sure both of you are ready to jump off onto the service ladder you start you descent. The ride is a little nerve wracking as the open topped lift shakes on occasion. The cables you've opted to have hang down from the top spool themselves out with each passing meter. Each is connected end to end but this could act as a weak point if there was too much weight on them. Like say a suit of power armor. Its a good thing you haven't added any extra weight to it, like say an additional ablative layer. Oh wait...

Stopping above the bottom level you step over onto the service ladder to go down the rest of the way. The entrance to the bunker is just a few meters above the bottom of the shaft with no door blocking it. Even without night vision you can see a pair of blinking red lights marking the locations of ceiling mounted sentry guns. They cant make you out due to the camo though.

Night vision on you see writing on a pair of structural supports. They're caution and warnings about the supports being equipped with demolition charges. You cant see any obvious cables leading out of them. Stepping back through the entrance you warn the others not to enter until you've located the detonator.

Do you disable the pair of sentry guns now or wait until you've explored more of the bunker?

Choosing to wait to disable anything you head down the corridor until coming to a T junction with a sealed blast door at the end. There are more sentry guns in either direction. Heading right you pass through a set of open cargo doors. Two other ones are on opposite sides of the hall, one marked Barracks the other Storage. Both can be opened without the sentry guns seeming to respond. A quick glance into storage reveals that much of the room has been cleared but there are still crates filled with munitions and a few torpedoes. You'll have to take a more thorough inventory later.

On the other side of the complex you find what seems to be an airlock but neither of the doors past it will open. It seems they need security clearance. The door marked command center is more difficult to open. Not wanting to waste time in case the controls for the sentry guns are inside you pull out your HF blade and begin to cut through the door. Its heavy grade steel, but still only steel and soon you're through.

Most of the lights inside are dimmed but a few monitors are on showing security programs running and video from some of the weapon emplacements. Internal defenses are listed showing a command process connecting the guns to the demolition charges.

Checking external defenses you can see the weapons and sensors greyed out indicating those the marines have disconnected. Wait a second. There's a similar setup connecting the outer defenses to the demo charges. If enough go offline they'll be triggered. There are only two remaining before the fail safe triggers.

Finding your coms wont work because of sensor shielding in the walls you rush back into the hall and order the Marines to stop dismantling the guns immediately. You doubt plugging them back in would be of much use right about now.

You wait to see or hear a response... Looking back through the door you see one more gun go down before. Cursing quietly you wait to see if another goes down.

"Sir the teams have ceased salvage operations."
You exhale the breath you didn't realise you were holding.

"We're going to need an intrusion expert to disable the demolition charges down here but we cant afford to knock out any more sentry guns." Heading back to the lift you have the Marines send down some com relays which you then plant in the hall and the main shaft so that you can keep in contact. The bandwidth isn't much but you're able to send video to one of the specialists up in the cave.
"Those security computers are too old and specialized for the hacking module to be used sir."

"Then can you walk me through this? I haven't exactly disarmed a bomb before let alone an entire facility."

"Yes sir it is. Sergeant Major, if you could step inside the bunker to see if the sentries are off?

Ecord grumbles about being a guinea pig but drops down into the hallway.
"...I'm not being shot full of holes yet."

A few minutes later half of the heavy team arrives via lift and begin a full sweep of the bunker. The airlock leads into a submerged hanger area for use by submarines where a small one is currently docked.
