OK, this is one hell of a situation we got ourselves into. Anyway, there is nothing we can do about it now and I am not going to give up on getting Midori back alive until Deculture writes something to the effect of “Midori Hanegawa is dead” Well right now everything is in Madoka Kaname’s hands. She is the one with the power to make this a happy ending, or a bittersweet one.

We will have to give her a good reason to keep up alive, better reasons then “We are party members” or “I hugged you and stopped everything from going to shit”.

There is one thing we have gained while travelling through Homura’s memories that Madoka is going to be interested in. And that is knowledge of Madoka and Homura’s combined past. While we don’t have complete knowledge; we don’t know about Homura’s timetravelling, we don’t know how Madoka and Homura were separated, we don’t know how Madoka became a goddess witch, and we don’t know how Murderface came to be. However we are the only person who knows Madoka’s true name, we are the only person who knows that Madoka cares deeply about Homura, and we are the only person who knows that Homura sacrificed everything to bring Madoka back.

So I propose

No, they were purple. The same color as your sempai's eyes, the same flame that gouted from her left eye when she willingly held a golden weapon against the Betrayer in a training session that seems so long ago, now. The same flame that sparked from the armored fragment's glaring, scarred visage, and the same fire that now seemed to fill the entire sky above you.

The fire dissipates with a predatory roar from the heavens - and it's only then that you could finally see what's in front of you. And what you see is a war - a war with two sides doing their level best to murder each other. One side fighting with grim, silent determination usually reminiscent of machines - the other fighting with tears in their eyes and acid in their hearts, uncaring of how much they hurt, how much they bled. Fighting because there was nothing else but to fight and make the other side suffer just as much as they are suffering now.

Complete and utter bedlam. To your left, Mirai is screaming as she decapitates a caped shadow wielding a massive golden broadsword, the weapon easily dwarfing her own. She splits the remains in two with a downward stroke a heartbeat later, before disappearing once more into the burning melee. Her familiars forming a ring of snarling, roaring death around her, blood frothing from their maws.

Malal - her suit now all but burned right through, showing scorched flesh and even bone, the visor half-shattered - barely dodges the crescent-moon blades of twin golden scythes, before pouncing on the shadowy wielder and driving the tempered prong of her crowbar where its mouth should be. A ragged cry and a horrible wrenching sound, and the top of the shadow's skull comes tearing away with a wet, juicy crack.

She is screaming something as she points towards you - and it's then that you see something break away from the melee. A towering, spiked behemoth, awash in flame, its armored plates blackened by gunshots and carbon scoring. The oversized barrels attached to its arm with screaming bronzed demon-mouths glowing red-hot, while the massive hammer in its other hand crackled with a deadly force. With barely a grunt of effort, the hammer is heaved up and over its shoulder - before it is tossed forward with a roar of servos. The towering maul spinning end over end, before smashing right into the horde of shadows, scattering some and pulverizing others.

It turns towards you, the eyeslits of its tusked elephantine helm blazing with an inner crimson light - and with heavy, earth-shaking footsteps, the giant makes its way toward you. Completely unconcerned about the gunfire pinging off its back, on its pauldrons. It is just as unconcerned of the shadowy corpses it's crushing underfoot with every tread, even deigning to kick one to the side, one that looked like a shadow with blades for legs and hands.

It comes to a stop in front of you, and you look up at the behemoth with idle wonder. It reaches down with its free hand, reaching for something past you, scooping it up with a gentleness that should have no place in a machine made for war.

You blink as you see what it cradles in its brutally-armored arm, and you can't help but take a step back.

A limp, lifeless form, shattered beyond recovery. Strands of green hair half-drowned in crimson.

You look down, and you see another corpse, one that had been embracing the one Tiny Pete now carried in its arms. Its once pristine white costume now absolutely filthy with blood, making dirt and grime stick to it. Her shield, now a completely broken and shattered thing, is a burning useless disk of metal, still attached to the severed arm that bore it.

She closes her silk-gloved fingers over the fragment, before standing up and turning towards you. "Three more to go, I think," Madoka smiles, her amber eyes shining wetly with unshed tears. "Let's get this horrible business done, shall we, Midori-chan?"

"They're actually my idea," Madoka manages a smile, brittle and prideful at the same time. "I...I know, they're horrible, but I've put nearly everything I had left into each of them." The smile falters again. "The rest, I've used up in tricking Faust into believing that it was her idea in the first place, and whoever has the entire set would be able to become powerful enough to be a fun challenge. If Chiaki-san manages to get all of them, she'd be able to...end the cycle and turn everything back the way they're supposed to."

But...but isn't that way a bit...convoluted? What if Chiaki didn't stumble upon them as planned? What about the other girls who got the weapons? Couldn't she have done something else a bit more direct?

"I couldn't have done anything else, not without Faust finding out," Madoka shakes her head. "B-but I have friends, friends that I could still talk to from time to time, who were kind enough to volunteer, to help Chiaki-san along." She turns to look at Malal, who had just slammed her helmed forehead into the shrieking face of one of the shadows. "Friends are important, you know."

You nod at this, a bit dumbly. It's all a bit too much to take, but...you understand somehow. Yes.

One last thing, though. Madoka's using your soul gem as a temporary soul gem for herself; can you use the two grief seeds in her left pocket as a safety valve? Just to take away some of the stress so hopefully all of you can all come out of this alive?

"Grief seeds?" Madoka echoes, before blinking, and nodding. "O-oh! Yes, that would be good! I...I think I have them here, already...!" She pats the pockets of her voluminous skirt, before withdrawing the metal case containing the grief seeds from one of them. "I was wondering what this was...! Gosh, I haven't seen one of these in ages...!"

...No Grief Seeds? But--

"O-oh, um, that was kind of my wish in the first place," Madoka smiles sheepishly. "No more Witches. No more grief seeds. Just...demons, I suppose, although they're that not much of an improvement."

Demons. Well, yes, they don't exactly sound like something you'd prefer over Witches.

"I know, right? Why couldn't it have been Incubators instead?"

Well. Now that's something to think about. Kyuubey was nice and all, but you wouldn't mind having a go at Juubey yourself.

"Ah, he's a naughty one, but you should've met the old Kyuubey." Madoka makes a face. "Little bastard cat--" She starts to snap, but stops a little too late, cheeks reddening. "U-um, I meant, a horrid little thing!"

You would have laughed, if you still had working lungs.

It's then that another sound robs your attention. It's the other Homura - the one with the wings of pure hatred - screaming wordless hate as both the armored fragment and Chiaki herself tried their level best to kill her. A single downbeat of her massive golden wings sending Chiaki sprawling, while the armored one only leaned forward, a leopard-wet roar rumbling from her throat as she defied the buffeting wind. The purple flame in her eye blazing, she flings herself at the winged girl, only to be smashed aside by one of the shadows bearing a golden hammer. She hits the ground hard in a crash of metal...and doesn't get up.

"...Oh, dear. I...I think we should go to her. She won't last much longer." Madoka says. "Midori, come with me, please. I think she'll react violently if she saw me..."
