Howdy /tg/,

Every so often I run this. I'm an U.S. Army Artillery officer. Was enlisted before hand. I've deployed to Afghanistan, worked extensively with Special Operations and in Maneuver units.

If you have any questions about tactics, procedures, equipment, soldering etc to help your campaigns or characters, ask away.

Hello sir,

Running SoIFRP, I'm trying to figure out how to implement Ironborn longships. It seems like Viking longships would be a natural conversion, but it doesn't feel quite right. Help me with the ships, sir.

Right, so my character is currently traveling between dream dimensions and I'm trying to figure out how to get back home.

The one I just left (I reached my goal) was a massive white woman who has a city built around her, populated entirely by women. She is active in her role as city...whatever, and she occasionally reaches down and helps citizens.

I'll be coming out through her ring, however, and she knows I was there so I'm going to need a way to get out of her ring and down into the city without being seen, or at least find a way to distract her.

So with your experience, how would you distract or sneak by an omniscient giant woman?

And they are able to go up rivers too; a classic advantage of viking longships.

Nos mos Vallo, friend, thank you for serving.

This is a non-canon question and one I've been dying to have answered; how do you guys handle ROE and the bullshit associated with it? I've seen and read stories where units are attacked from mountain ranges by taliban forces, and then the taliban just walk back into town and the soldiers can't do anything. I've even seen a video of an instance where the soldiers in a convoy that just got attacked see people walking away from the mountain range they were just attacked from that are obviously nervous and trying to act natural and they could do all of jack shit because of ROE.

Which smart-ass enforces such faggotry? How can any commander honestly think " don't shoot until they shoot first" is a viable tactic?

OP here.

Everybody enforces RoE. Absolutely. As retarded as it is. I'm an Field Artillery guy, and this have become very, very difficult for us in this regard. The idea, overall, is that in COIN, you have to win the population to support you. If the population thinks that you are casually dropping bombs, and not caring about the consequences, then they are going to view you as the outsider. I've had some hilarious indirect gunfights, rockets vs. my artillery, which was more along the lines of... shoot rockets at me, because we cant shoot back. This is a long, and pointed conversation, but lets just try to answer your Qs.

1) Who enforces it? Everybody. Its the Law of War, as established by higher. Here is a quote:

"If you wanted to teach a baby a lesson, would you cut its head off? Of course not. You'd paddle it. There can be circumstances when it's just as foolish to hit an enemy city with an H-bomb as it would be to spank a baby with an axe. War is not violence and killing, pure and simple; war is controlled violence, for a purpose. The purpose of war is to support your government's decisions by force. The purpose is never to kill the enemy just to be killing him...but to make him do what you want to do. Not killing...but controlled and purposeful violence. But it's not your business or mine to decide the purpose of the control. It's never a soldier's business to decide when or where or how—or why—he fights; that belongs to the statesmen and the generals. The statesmen decide why and how much; the generals take it from there and tell us where and when and how. We supply the violence; other people—'older and wiser heads,' as they say—supply the control. Which is as it should be."

How do you feel about the armchair generals on /tg/ who think they are master tacticians?
>>
>>22944048
cont.

>" don't shoot until they shoot first"
Its not actually the rule. the RoE is not HORRIBLY complex, but its horribly enforced by mid level leaders, PLs and stuff, who are cowards. There is a difference between a "Hostile Act" performed, and a "Hostile Intent". I saw guys digging an IED, which, we argued were Hostile intent. You know what I did? I sent an Apache helicopter in, who fired a hellfire missile and then chased down the survivors with 30mm. Was it a hostile act? Well, nobody shot at me. But it was all gravy with the RoE.

Another thing that is important to note: in Afghanistan there are two ROEs. 1) ISAF, applies to all conventional forces. (title 10). 2) there is the Operation Enduring Freedom ROE, which applies to Special Operations, which is a lot more liberal.

I hope this helps. if not, we can chat some more about it
>>
>>22944590
That's a bit of a leading question, isn't it?
I feel like this is your way of saying "Someone disagreed with me on tactics, I know better than them".

And probably harder than the tiny welfare state that we've made our military into. However, their ability to maintain vehicles is abysmal. The TOC and entire FOB we moved in to looked like a gypsy abortion. So, you know the exact reason, but I do sympathize with your sentiments.

Well. I'll say this.
One key feature is that they were not soldiers. They were Marines. And Marines are generally better at the big army at everything. Warfighting especially. >US Army Artillery

orly

How accurate is the call-for-fire depicted in this post:

http://archive.foolz.us/tg/thread/14631363/#14631507

I've asked three or four artillery servicemen, and received three or four different replies. I know troops in the field can scream OHGOD SUPRESSION IN GRID 12345 RIGHT THE FUCK NOW OH PLEASE GOD and someone further up the communications chain will translate that into something more formal for the assigned fire-team, but I still don't know what communications they actually PASS. Or even who has the final authority on what munitions are fired - the FO or Joint Strike Controller can certainly describe a target and let the fire team pick the appropriate ammunition; but can they also request a specific munition? Or what?

This is incredibly important for me to get right. I can't just jam inaccuracies into this kind of fiction. It's serious business!
>>
>>22944803

Except he didn't. He said that a lot of Army women are sluts (unrelated to performance) and returned it with a question and a link to an article.
>>
>>22944590
Well, I love to point out that there are 3 levels of war. Strategic, Operational, and Tactical. Some of our best analysts of war have never served. John Keegan, Bill Lind. The former a great historian, and the latter, a great theorist. One of the best even. So, there are good people, and bad people at it everywhere. Worse, being in the military, especially going through the staff officer process, you can get "Trained", not educated, pretty badly, to think in certain processes, which ruin your tactical conceptual skills. So that, outsider perspective is sometimes very valuable. Also, there is a high degree of gamism, in table top stuff, which, some certainly confuse with knowledge of tactics. So I'm generally willing to entertain all opinions, its just that after 10 of talking with someone, you can figure out if they're in the 10% who knows something, or the 90% shitcocks. This applies to people, and especially officers who are in, as well.

Well, we're not going to "win" it, by any means. We probably could, but it would take an investment of blood and resources that the America is not willing to commit. Another 25 years of being deployed there in strength. There are a lot of problems that have resulted as to us being there. Strategically, the problem is Pakistan. But, "ours is not to reason why, ours is but to do an die."
>Proud to serve the country?
Not really? I mean, the military is a very entitled organization. Its literally, a do not think, job. And they sort took all the pride of it, leaving me with little. the BN CDR asked this in Basic training, and the clown next to me stood up and said, "I joined the Army, because I'm a patriot sir!" Really? Were you at fucking bunker hill? get the fuck outta here guy. So, pride? not so much.

>Taliban
There are so many talibans, and whats left of it today is much different than what it was in 2001.

I actually ran two militias in Afghanistan, paying locals to take guns and kill taliban. Many of them were former taliban. I also helped "reintegrate" a lot of former insurgents. A few of them taliban. Its not really a national cause, overall, its a few pissed off local warlords, and a lot of jobless kids, who just want respect, and power.

I'd love to answer this succinctly, but I can't. Have I been hit with EO violations by sluts? Yep. Have I seen some badass chicks, officers included, who under fire preformed remarkably? Yes.

Ah hA!

Great question!

An artillery call for fire consists of 6 parts, broken over 3 transmissions. (interesting point, the british actually start with "hello!")

1. Observer ID, Warno
2. Tgt Location
3. Tgt desc, Method of Engagement, Method of Contorl.

Example!
"Bonecrusher 40 (The fire direction center at the guns), this is Butcher 9 (the observer), Fire for Effect, Over!" ("butcher 9, this is bonecrusher 40, fire for effect out" this is readback... where the FDC talks back)
"Grid 12345678, Over" (Grid 12345678)
"One Tank, in the Open. At my Command, Over." (One tank, at my command out).

for more detail, check out chapter 4 in the FM 6-30. http://armypubs.army.mil/doctrine/DR_pubs/dr_a/pdf/fm6_30.pdf

You can get away with just saying, "you this is me, immediate suppression, grid 123456 over!" But, its not as.... good?
>>
>>22945172
Just because men are on average stronger than women does not mean that women cannot possibly be as strong as you need them to be to perform this role. Certainly a much lower proportion of women will be capable than will be men - but there will still be capable women.

Former 25B/19D here. I did three years NG as a Scout in a Brigade Recon Troop, 6 years active as Commo with the last 3.5 in a Special Forces Group Signal Detachment. I deployed to Iraq three times. If you can shoot it, drive it, use it to talk to someone, or get internet access, I can fill you in on pretty much every single unclassified detail.
>>
>>22944852
>http://archive.foolz.us/tg/thread/14631363/#14631507

1) an immediate suprpession mission requires only one transmission. So that first line, is accurate, and good. "you, this is me, immediate suppression." the following stuff, fits, in a regular fire for effect mission, and was thus, very unnecessary.

2) the idea that they're delta force.... I've done artillery work for SF a lot. And they're generally horrible at it. "Hey bro, can you put some rounds on X, about Y meters out?" wtf?!

3) For Artillery, the guy who makes the call on if it can be fired, is the SSG in the Fire Direction Center. There are a few people along the chain who can deny it, but its on him. For Close Air Support, it has to be approved by a Joint Tactical Attack Controller, the JTAC. Only he can "clear hot" and let that bomb drop.

4) There is a good system. As I pointed out above, >>22945264. However, if you just get on the radio, give me a target location, I will put rounds on it. You may put it in degrees etc. In that FDC, they will unfuck your absurd request, and get rounds out to support you no matter what. For a lot more detail, check out FM 6-30, chapter four. Or if you have another certain request, about a specific fire mission, then I can go into more detail.

They are professionals though, and for a gamism, maybe you could add that trait to give them some flair? but actually, its not really a problem. In my experience. I wasn't in Iraq from 2003-10. So I cant give you the god's honest on it.

I've been to some silly bases. But I hate logistics. Generally the quality of people attracted to those jobs, want the paycheck, but not the work. So, its not something I recommend. If you don't want to kill people, consider the airforce. High standard of living, easy rules, they treat you like a human being.

the marines are a much smaller organization. They showed up to Afghanistan late. They do shorter deployments. (no marines did any 15 month rotations, like the entire army did for most of the iraq war). But, most combat, overall, is done by the army. A few, very big exceptions.. Fallujah namely. But in Afghn, the marines are in RC-South. So they have an area, that they share with the army. The US Army has the rest of the country. I was in RC-East, on the Pakistan border. Plenty of fighting. Infact, the most fighting. No marines.

Operational differences? Well, look at their mission. They are supposed to attack ports, and beaches. They work for the goddamn navy for fucks sake. Their job isn't supposed to be occupation. However, if you go down the historical record, especially in central america, we've used them for everything.

Maybe? Some chucklefucks just don't adapt to the life and get kicked out. Some people straighten up and become pretty good soldiers. The biggest thing is (unless you want to go combat arms specifically) that you really need to be interested in the job you're signing up for. I reclassed to 25B IT specialist because I enjoyed doing that stuff, and I did well in it and got a ton of experience I'm using in my current job in civilian life.

You get out of the military what you put into it.

Kissinger points out, that America cannot go to war. We go on crusade. In Afghanistan, nothing I did, saved American lives back home. It wasn't for the constitution, it wasn't for moms, chevys or apple pies. I was supporting American interests abroad. It wasn't world war II, where fascism threatened the world... We effectively destroyed AlQaeda in Afghanistan years ago. I realize that what I was do thing there, was supporting national policy. Thats it. I wasn't rolling tea barrels off boats, or signing declarations of separation etc. At this point, we're just talking opinion. Getting shot at is nothing remarkable. Where are the Police in Chicago, and our giant parades for them being heroes, and yellow ribbons on cars everywhere.

Yeah. Men, Women and War describes how some chick's ovaries fell out because she walked an army march. The guy might be sensible in every other way, but on this particular issue I think he's a reactionary fuck. Especially because half the problems he highlights as army problems (lack of education, fewer entrants, lower civilian:military population ratio) he just kind of lays at the door of women being in the army without any real backing. He's also operating from some rigidly defined, outdated concep of an objective 'femininity' despite the wealth of historical sources that are disparate that he uses.
>>
If you're looking to sign up, it might be good to see if you're valid for citizenship in another country first. The US army is still better than most countries for its soldiers, but it's still partly treated as a welfare service, to ensure that people with no education and no prospects have something to do that's useful. It's why they advertise the benefits of army service so much, and don't really mention the pay - it sucks, considerably.

Other wealthy nations tend to have an approach that's better for the soldier, where they have a higher standard for recruitment, and pay you like it's an actual career. Australia and Canada have been having something of a duel over who has the highest pay and entry standards, with Australia just ahead right now because Canada had to cut back.

I know in the Australian army there's more of a focus on offering civilian-applicable skills, since they know a lot of people want to do their years and go, and unless you go something like Infantry there'll be at least one equivalency in your training. The pay for a new guy also works out at, I think, about $40,000 Aud a year after you've paid all taxes and deductions and mandatory expenses. If you have a qualified post it's much more, with anything taking a degree-level to enter paying at least $105,000 before expenses and tax and about $65,000 after all expenses. If you pick the right corps and have the qualifications, you can actually end up in Australia's highest tax bracket.

Also, if you deploy they basically just throw money at you. If you go to a combat deployment, which right now means Afghanistan, for a standard rotation, you'd have to fuck up to leave with less than $100,000 that year, after tax and expenses.

There's nothing wrong with the US army for its soldiers, per se, but you do have a chance at a much better deal somewhere else.

Yes, the ASVAB means a lot. Your scores determine which jobs you are qualified for. If you score under 31st percentile overall you MIGHT be able to get a waiver. For 25B, for example, you need a 110 in the General Technology subscore to qualify (120's were the average for people in the MOS).

Ability to get a clearance is important, too. Many MOS' have a minimum clearance. Again with 25B, if you can't get a Secret, you'll be dropped from the course and sent to be either a cook or a truck driver.
>>

You want stories of walking down the same steps of other american war heroes, and seeing the ghosts of historical giants watch over me as I marched past etc etc? Maybe I'm really cynical, however there is a lot of bullshit involved. I'm rarely emotionally moved by the pomp and the circumstance. Its entirely demystified. I think, one day one of basic, after getting tore up on an obstacle course, we stopped at 1700, dropped our gear, turned, and saluted the flag as retreat was played... i shed a single tear, and felt totally 'Merica. What else? I played CCR fucking loud as shit when I helicoptered in on a contracted Huey on a base in Nuristan. But, thats it.

Artillery? Its not what I wanted to do. I mean, today, i went to a bbq, run by a guy from Georgia, and we had 15 international students. All Artillery men from around the world. We toasted to the guns, etc etc. Thats neat. But, overall, I'm so disappointed by the officer corps, and the military in general, any fantasies of glory are long fucking gone. I have some ribbons, for doing my job, in a war that I think is silly.

One big piece of advice I have is this:
Getting married as soon as possible to get out of the barracks and get that BAH is the dumbest fucking thing you can do. The military has a freakishly high divorce rate because people get married before they're ready to just because they get a little extra cash, and then two deployments later are back in the barracks with half their pay going to their ex.

It can work, but it's one of the biggest mistakes ever when it doesn't.

its all shooters preference man. I'm an artillery officer. So, our good enlisted men on here will immediately think some, mostly accurate shit of, "what the fuck would he know?".

so, I'll tell you whats important to me. 1) light. Going up and down stairs is fucking taxing. So I go for a plate carrier, smaller than the regular vest.
2. Thin: I wear my kit flat. As in, I don't double stack mags, i keep it close to my chest as possible.

you develop whats called, "your workspace". So imagine holding that rifle in one hand, keeping it pointed out, and your eyes down range. Is your gear set up, so that free hand can pull a mag, put it in a drop pouch, and pick another one up, put it in, and slap yourself into gear? Can you do a good tacmag reload? honestly, its more drills than just what you have.

But I'm sure none of that helps you. maybe this does. A lot of guys make an SOP to put two mags on their back, so in a 4 man stack, you can just grab a mag off the guy infront of you. Sub machine guns did a great job in WW2 for the russians at leningrad. I couldn't say, because we all use carbines, and dont really have a choice. One neat thing I saw, is that a pouch is put on your kit, between your shoulders, with two straps. Those straps, make loops. So the idea is, if you go down, i open your strap pouch, then me and a friend, put them on, and we can drag you out, while still fighting. Kneepads, sometimes useful, more often a fucking hassle.

the other problem is that people look at E1 etc pay.

That isn't 'career' pay, that is not have a family pay.

The lower ranks are for your first enlistment. That is it. After you make E6 you should consider a family. until then, you are living on post and spending your pay on whatever you want. In other words, an E1 paycheck is his monthly entertainment expense account. Which is pretty damn good compared to what most people spend.

In about four or five years he will make some rank, and be a bit wiser, and he will make better pay.

No actually. I dont.

Not to go all war zany here. But in one area I was at for awhile, they had a problem with a local police. The governor put a different ethnicity in there. So the police, mostly 15 year old kids, started hassling people driving buy. Getting bribe money off them. The locals looked for help. THEIR WAY. They found some Talibs, who grabbed guys off the street, then broke their arms, ran their face through glass, and shot them in the head. Left them in the street. that didn't get the message, so they escalated. The next eight police they grabbed, they fed their faces to dogs, cut their arms off, and left them in the street. I was in Afghn recently, when that whole Qurran burning happened. THe next day, thousands showed up to our base, and were scaling the walls. It was like fucking zulu. People were pissed. With SSG Fucko walked outside, and started shooting civilians, you know what their reaction was? "No big deal." THey didn't give a fuck. Pashtun culture has a very different set of values. When I ran two 200 man militias, I would give them missions, that I knew our RoE would blunder. And you know what? they sorted it out, and brought peace to their area, and were celebrated by the locals for doing so.

AHAHHAHA reminds me of just before I went into the army.

Was living with a bunch of roommates and one of em decides that she wants to join the army. I try and get her to think extremely hard about this decision, because she has always done light labor- waitressing and bartending.

Well, my life wasn't going anywhere fast, and I decided 'fuck it, I'm sick of doing factory and temp work. At least with the army I can get Uncle Sam to foot the bill for training me for a real job.'

So I go and talk to the same recruiter as my female roommate. I've always been a chubby fuck, so they want me to lose 5 more pounds before I do my ASVAB. No problem- was on a high protein/low carb diet, 5 pounds was nothing, since I had already lost 60 the two months prior.

So, while I have this little grace period before I take the ASVAB, my roommate proposes we get hitched, just so we get a little more money when we join. She was nice enough, but I know better to stick my dick in crazy- and more-so- don't get married to crazy.

Fast forward to after Basic, I came back to town to do a short two weeks in the recruiters office. Found out my roommate didn't make it three weeks into Basic before she had "back problems" and got discharged.

god sweet fuck. My only problem with the M4 is, they shortened the barrel so much from the original design, and then act surprised when the gas pulse (which is that much hotter, having less distance/time to cool off) is overheating bolts and shearing lugs. (Though new bolts of much better temp tolerance has actually fixed that, based on your reply.)

Does your commissar threaten to shoot you if you do not work as efficiently as possible, and if there is any sign of a drop in morale? Or does your commissar try to raise your morale through stirring speeches and ensuring you get nothing but the best bunks and barracks, and saves your life time after time?

We didn't get any oil out of Iraq, when you get down to it. Iraq is an OPEC member and all of their production was sold by the Iraqi's through those channels.
>>
>>22945915
You're talking about strategic objectives. And, the only "sense" you get, is the mention of the "strategic corporal". Essentially, that even the lowest level guy, in today's age of pervasive media, can fuck it up for everyone. That's about it. Most guys deploy with the mentality that, they are there to go, and bring all their battle buddies home alive. the end.

It depends on what you do. But here is the rule, if someone was an asshole racist in America, then they'll probably be one when they get back. *shrug*

I made a lot of awesome friends. I hope to go back to Afghanistan as a Civilian, grow a beard, and buy some shitty motorcycle. Drive around for a month or two and visit them all.

Hah! With a few of them, we made a plan for me to come back, and we would start our own militia. Move up to Nuristan, get me 4 hot blonde chicks as wives, and keep the Taliban out. Still a good plan.
>>
>>22946152
Then, again, what's the gain? The whole goddamned world paints us as the devil anyway based on half-truths, bullshit and a media that seems to want the middle east to 'win', so what possible reason could we have for not taking their oil when the backlash is exactly the same either way?
>>
>>22946130
YES YES YES.

Armor is very much reliable in COIN operations, despite the urban environment. Yes, armor can be vulnerable in an urban environment, but that's why you have combined arms so that infantry and armor can cover each other.

The most common set up with Abrams and Bradleys is to have a platoon to set up a hunter-killer team of 2 killer Abrams and 3 hunter Bradleys. Brads pop up their turrets from underneath cover just like the SHY TANK IS SHY image macro. Brads scout out potential targets and then move out of cover to harass any dug-in targets. Anything too heavy or can't be hit by something like the 25mm or TOW, the Brads laser it for the Abrams to take out. My current unit operates like this, but on lighter terms with HMMWVs with LRAS3s acting as hunters and spotters for the Brads.

One of the Detachment commanders I had, when he was promoted to Captain, got some extra nametapes made up. Including one that said "Crunch". He was wearing that when he tried to swipe some big army unit's Guidon (the flag that represents them). He got caught, but since we don't wear unit patches downrange, and MPs can't go on our compounds, he never got into any real trouble for it.

He also tried to get into the radio room through the little service window and fell on his ass, knocking the rifle rack over.

In the COIN fight, Armor is still great. The threat doesn't have a lot of weapons that can fuck it up. I have a friend, fellow captain, who lost 3 tanks (got 2 purple hearts), in Iraq. But, thats sort of a crazy exception. Generally, they do outstanding. We didn't take them to Afghanistan. But the Marines did. And they do great.

in my time, it depended on the unit (how nightmarish the bureaucracy was). Like my stint in the production detachment saw me having to get state department approval before I took a shit then write three reports on the shit to send to eight commanders, an under secretary, and a poodle that watched Braveheart.
When I went to 9th battalion and we became foreverdeployed (especially in TPD 940), the paperwork was still there, but much, much more streamlined.
Also, enlisted in my time dealt with the vast majority of that stuff. The Os just signed off for the must part.

It depends a lot on what branch you go. I'll tell you what works for me. When you have subordinates, when you're that PL, and you have 30 guys who actually respect you. Man, its amazing. I have had a lot of friends who have been terrible PLs. And some great ones. Myself, I was pretty good. But the men knew i would try to run interference on really stupid shit that came down from BN, and I wasnt afraid to tell the battery commander to fuck off. But, knowing you're the difference between a world of shit for some really good guys, and an actually decent time? its amazing. pretty self suck dicking, I know. but its what made it worth it. MS 3. I go to a senior military college, so the grand majority of the people are actually not worthless. I'm not a terribly social guy (not inept, just disinterested), and the people aren't bad, per se, (actually pretty competent for the most part) but I just don't give a shit. I see them as coworkers, not friends. I just want to go to class, do my job, do the little Army song-and-dance and go home. I'm not a natural leader either. Well, it all depends then. Avoid IN, AR, FA. Also, avoid QM, Trans. Commo? AG, Finance. While not hooah, its very much "a job". You do your part, you dont stay late, and you go home.

Competent in a school is way different, then being competent in a unit. West point makes some horrible fucking officers. But, also, a lot of great ones. Guys who said they went to, "Westpoint", or guys who you dont know, until you ask them. Then they make a joke about the north hudson polytechnical etc. These are generally good men. I dunno man, do something, try it out. I was in ROTC until MS3, until i was thrown out for bad grades. What I saw as success there, wasn't success in the real army. Unless you're infantry. Then its your PT test, and how good your arms look. No real leadership skills needed, but you should always be trying to act like a fucking squad leader. Cause thats why the military gave you an education, and hired you... to be a fucking squad leader. Jesus fuck.

The Coast Guard is military but it offers the closest you can get to a 9 to 5 lifestyle. Yeah, you will have to get sea time eventually but ship life ain't that fucking bad.

I'll say this too about the Coast Guard in comparison to the Army. In the Army people always talked about getting out or being stuck having to stay in to support their family. I rarely ran into anyone who was looking to go far because they wanted to. In the Coast Guard I rarely hear of anyone who wants to get out voluntary. People actually want to stay in.

A question: At what level is logistical support handled?

I'm trying to design a modular army for a futuristic game, building it off a fire-team model with deployable brigades containing battalions, and am wondering how they get the necessary support for everything. So what does the headquarters unit actually look like? A bunch of guys who do paperwork? Attachments to be loaned out as operationally necessary? Something else entirely?

I've figured it would probably be different at each level, with the deployable level being the only one that actually has dedicated paper-pushers, but I could be wrong about that, especially if I design them to be scaling indefinitely.

Or do you go off of a more "MI" style for paperwork: everyone has a turn in the office?

Its different levels of "Go Fast". Unless you have props. Prop airplanes don't go fast, but they laugh at the fragile little jets and their delicate jet engines that FOD out after eating a puny rock.

Engine troops also consider turboprops to be "real" engines, because jet engines make lawn mowers look complex.

Unless its and A-10. Who is really a gun with a airplane accessory.

I like to think of it as the US suffering from multiple personality disorder. There's ultra Machiavellian US and crazy idealistic US, but they sound so much alike that most countries don't know which one they're talking to.

I imagine they care, but generally fail to maintain facades at times. They take anyone and everyone they can get their hands on, and the youth of today are naturally well represented.

OP's threads make me feel a little conflicted, though. I've seen these threads for... probably years now, but still, I can't help the vague feeling of suspicion that this just passes for advertising at kids who don't know better. And at some point yet another poor sucker is going to wind up taking a 6-year commitment to unproductive idiocy despite all their potential just because someone advertised on their favourite board.

What is general difference between marines and rangers? Judging by movies, rangers consider themselves even more elite and badass than marines, is that true?
Also what the deal with rangers hoo-ha as answer to orders?
>>
>>22948406
.... Marines are 4 divisions in size, 3 active, 1 reserve. Their job, is to support the navy, by attacking, and seizing, ports and beaches. They do lots of other stuff, and they're very good at it.

Rangers are 1 regiment in size. They sort of fall under JSOC, Joint Special Operations Command. They mostly run around at night, and snatch dudes out of homes. Sometimes, they just pull security for CAG. Rangers have a very certain mindset. But no Marine IN officer that I've ever met who went to Ranger school said it was hard.

And hey, if I die my family will get one of those big payouts so that'll be nice for them.

well... that is a pretty grand level subversive plot. If you read through my posts here, you can pretty plainly see that I'm not a huge fan of it. If you didn't, well, cheers.

here is a nice quote though, about all that potential.
A young man who does not have what it takes to perform military service is not likely to have what it takes to make a living. Today's military rejects include tomorrow's hard-core unemployed. -JFK
>>
>>22948490
we dispatch LTs and SFC to go to fobs to loot their warehouses. No shit. "Task, steal ink."
>>
>>22948506
You can pretty much go to any school you want to. However unlikely. But yes, some times, they go to Ranger school.
>>
>>22948473
Well, I suppose it's that exact attitude that makes the military what it is. Not giving a shit about the lives of one's own people.

I think it was just yesterday when I read that 22 US military vets commit suicide every day. The number is enormous. I've heard of, and talked about vets' difficulties to reintegrate a few times lately, and from what I hear it sounds more and more like full-fledged prison-level institutionalization syndrome, except ex-cons get better reintegration programs. I wouldn't want to see any poor bastard sign up for that.
>>
>>22948496
Not too shabby. They have their pros and cons. I've only worked with one NG BDE while deployed. And the characteristics of that particular state shone through. through and through. "Phase one of this plan, LT is going to run up and throw a grenade into the house. Phase two, we shoot anyone who comes out the other side." .... seriously. However, I've worked a little with the Oregon guard, and they were outstanding. Very professional. So its a mixed bag. Like italy in ww2?
>>
>>22948565

I'm honestly not surprised to hear that the states mentalities show though. Very happy to hear that last bit though, I just signed up with the Oregon Guard, nice to hear we present ourselves well.
>>
>>22948552
How about this... Maybe people who are attracted to military service, arent exactly like every one else? In my experience, deployments dont change you. At all. If you were an asshole, when you come back, you're still an asshole, and you just blame it on "the horrors of war". Emotionally crippled people, are more likely to get 'damaged'. But thats just garbage in, garbage out.

I worked in the VA for a few years. What you "hear" is sorta bullshit. Fact is, people are lazy, and the military conditions people into a very lazy lifestyle. All your food, housing, life is taken care of for you. All you have to do, is show up on time and be in the right uniform. easiest fucking job ever. Now, take someone, treat them like this for 4 years. Maybe even 20 years, and then put them back into the real world? Fuck.

Also, what the fuck do you know about reintegration programs? Are you aware of Chapters 30-XXXXXX? Anyone who joins gets 90k for college, a free job, and ~1200 a month for rent the whole time they're in school. Thats really that bad? Or say you're motivated, and you go into the VA, and want a different program. Vocational Rehab. My wife got 4 years of private art school paid for, a gross abuse of resources, but none the less, 40k a year that they paid for. They will pay to make you a doctor, lawyer, whatever. Its not "the system", it just turns out, most people are douche bags.
>>
>>22948552
>reintegrate
That implies guys like me ever fit in in the first place. The way I figure it, sooner or later I'm going to put a fucking gun in my mouth. There's just no fucking two ways about it. It's too much, man. Now, wouldn't it be better if my fat ass was soaking up IED shrapnel and saving the guy next to me from getting swissed instead? Some guy who can probably function in this world?

The answer to that riddle is yes. And my family gets some money, not that they need it. Maybe I could leave it to some random destitute kid and really do some good.

and what did you post? hearsay? America is a country of 300 million fucking people. And unlike china, and India, we're in the 21st century. Actually, turns out, we're still leading it. So there are whackjobs. Inevitably. And the military, and organization of several million people, is a reflection of the socio-economic statra that joins it... people without options. If I had great grades, and the money to pay for it, sure I'd have gone to yale. But I didnt. 300 million is a whole fucking lot. There are a lot at the top, and even more at the bottom. Unfortunately, not everyone can live in a socialist wonderland. But thank you, I'll carry on.... recruiting? here. Hooah.

Fuck.
>>
>>22948729
>This is all even worse than I thought, you don't even have the right bits in your brain to start processing what I tried to say.
What you tried to say is pretty fucking unclear. Something about how the military aren't purely exemplars and people have trouble reintegrating? That's terrific. Call C-span and give them that brilliant insight. Frankly you sound Canadian or some kind of west European. Fact is, not everyone can be a rockstar or a movie god or even all there and it's not the job of the healthy to have to carry our useless asses on their shoulders. I wouldn't if I was them. And isn't the golden rule do unto others etc.? I'm not a sociopath. I'm leveraging my one asset in a way that is useful to my state and helpful to my fellow man.

Asking other people to foot the bill for my existence, while nice and easy for me, is also wrong. Socialism is wrong. People are obligated to take care of their own ass but not anybody else's. If they want to do it out of the goodness of their hearts that's great, but forcing it down their throats is fucked.

At the risk of /pol/ relatedness, socialism is great when it's done properly. So are free, competitive markets and anarchism. Unfortunately, as a species we keep half-assing it.
>>
>>22949161
Socialism would work if humans were capable of it, but they're not. Socialism actually does work in smaller communities. Places like small towns and villages where everyone knows everyone and they tend to look out for their own. People don't go hungry if anyone can help it and the government doesn't need ot force them. They do it on their own. It, like everything else, breaks down when you add more people and more distance to the equation. I'm not going to care about someone I've never met or heard of. Why would i? I don't know them. I have plenty of other people to concern myself with.
>>
>>22949161
>glamorous
It's not about the glamour you cynical cunt, it's about the exit I CRAVE being used to save lives. Fuck, it's the same reason I'm an organ donor. If there was infinite wealth in the world, yeah, by all means subsidize me and all the pieces of shit just like me. But there's not. Why do you think life insurance policies have those suicide clauses? I'm not the first person that's had this idea.

Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

Look, bottom line, I wasn't made for this world and this world was certainly not fucking made for me. I definitely don't have the endurance or the mental toughness to get anywhere close to going the distance. At least this way it can...Fuck it, you know? Mean something. Help someone.
