Last time: a hero awakens in a new body, a dark lord falls, and a journey begins. (Full thread: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/22839224)

You are Shaoram, once called "the Merciful". Your archenemy, Xaraxxes slew you and trapped your spirit in a magical gem. But he was arrogant. You escaped to the body of his henchman, Artem, and seized the oportunity to rid the world of Xaraxxes' evil!

Now you are in the hands of adventurers who believe you to be the wicked Artem. The mighty youth, Brechulf, believes that you deserve a fair trial and has pledged to see you live at least that long. His companion Zia, whose mother died at Artem's hands, is far less happy.

You are bound and gagged. Brechulf has walked off to relieve himself, and Zia is staring at you. She does not appear to be plotting your demise.

What now?

>RULES: Despite his head wound, Shaoram is mostly with it at the moment. I'll be taking ideas that appear to have some support. If you really hate something that another poster suggested, say so early.

>Rather than act at this point, you may also choose to have Shaoram remember more of his past, or opt to see things from the perspective of Brechulf or Zia.
>>

sounds good.
>>
You are Zia bin Xaraxxes, but only those who wish to be your enemies use your full name. As a girl, you fled the household of the mage-lord - your mother would have run with you, but was murdered by a brutal thug known as Artem.

In freedom, you grew strong and learned to fight. When the opportunity came to join adventurers seeking the death of Xaraxxes, you could not be swayed. But things took a curious turn when you confronted the mage-lord in his throne-room. Artem, who you had thought dead at the hands of your companions, burst through the melee and slew Xaraxxes. You tried to kill him in turn, only to be restrained by Brechulf, who insists on giving Artem a "fair trial". Pah!

You've been listening to Brechulf and Artem talk, and something is bothering you. Artem was a stupid thug. He wouldn't think to try tricking Brechulf - he'd either try to escape or beg. He certainly wouldn't go to sleep with you watching him!

What now?
>>
>>22859996
So Zia is Xaraxxes' daughter?

"I need answers," you inform your companions, and they shrug. What do they care? They're in it for the money.

You remove Artem's gag, none too gently, and then rap on his collar bone to make sure he's awake. Artem's eyes snap open.

"So, Artem, do you remember me?"

He gives a weary smile, "How could I forget? It's been a long time since I've had a tussle with such a good-looking woman."

Insolence! You clamp one hand down on his injured shoulder and squeeze. "Don't play with me, or you will be thinking of this as your good arm. Do you remember my mother?"

Artem looks troubled and pauses. "I'm sorry for your loss. But I am not Artem."

Zia is inclined to just demand his real name. Do you want to change course?

Another kick. "Lies!" Artem tries to catch his breath to say something, but you are in no mind to hear it and kick the wind out of him again. You don't care who he is any more, nobody taunts you like this and lives.

You manage to take a step back and restrain your bloodlust. The sailors' laughter doesn't really help, but it does diffuse your anger.

This is very wrong. Artem would never have tried taunting you with the false name, certainly not twice in a row. While you ponder, the villain finally gets his wind back. "Is that all? I don't want to try talking again if you're going to start kicking me again."

How can he be so confident? Does he not fear death at all? Then you realize something that chills you to the core - this is Xaraxxes!

>>
>>22861029
Yeah. To clarify his strangeness was his deliberately self sacrificing combat style. And him outright saying, I don't care if I died as long as I take you with me. If Xaraxxes was controlling his actions that early, why did he do it?
>>
>>22861040
Well, it has only been three years, and she probably heard about us from inside Xaraxxes organization, depending on precisely when she fled.
>>
>>22860959
Could it really be? Artem was acting strange before he killed Xaraxxes, so if they were somehow switched, it would have to be earlier. Surely the mage-lord didn't plan for you to loot his keep and take him prisoner!

But whoever it is, they're not interested in telling you the truth. 'Shaoram the Merciful' indeed! He might as well have told you that he was the Prophet.

"As I told your companion, my spirit was taken captive by Xaraxxes. I am glad to be free, though I would rather not be in the body of a murderer."

You scowl. "I am not a little girl, you do not need to tell me fairy stories."

You'd rather be kicked by a horse than Zia. But you're pretty sure that you've only taken some more bruises.

"No, I don't want to tell you any stories. Why don't you tell me about your past? It would take quite a lot to get someone to go after Xaraxxes."

She gives you a look of contempt, then snorts. "I was born his slave. He may not have held it, but Xaraxxes owned the whip that flayed my back. But mostly, I came to kill Artem and avenge my mother."

"Well, I'm glad to see you're getting along," Brechulf remarks, with false cheer. Zia starts - she must not have heard him approach either. The barbarian looks about his companions, "We still have some time before dusk. Let's make use of it."

You are Brechulf, son of Morgar, and you hate it here. Every day in the south, you bear witness to signs of its depravity. Today, Zia - who you had previously seen as one of the best of this weakling breed of men - shows that she cares nothing for honour and only lusts for blood. Worse, you are quite sure that she struck a bound man for her own satisfaction.

Since the spring, you have already seen enough to make up your mind about what to do with all of this. You will return to your homeland, unite the tribes, and at their head you will cleanse the world of the filth of "civilization". But before then, you need to travel these southern lands, learn their roads and ways and the strength of the men that guard them.

You pick up the gag and walk over to Artem. As you suspected, there's signs of further abuse. You look up at Zia and ask, "What have you been doing?" but she shrugs the question off. So be it.

Before gagging Artem again, you ask him, "Are you strong enough to walk?"

What now?

>RULES: Brechulf is an honorable, honorable man. You simply can't have him violate his sense of right, but otherwise you may influence him by consensus.
>>
>>22861680

Artem nods, "I think so."

Good. At least he has his pride. Not enough to refrain from trickery, but a man's feet tell you more than his tongue. You help him to his feet, still holding the gag. Is it worth asking him what happened? You know he told Zia that he was someone else. No, best not to say anything more, if you asked Artem to answer what Zia would not, you would dishonour her.

You walk alongside Artem for a spell, making sure that his limbs will obey his heart. He walks badly with his wounded leg, but seems strong enough. Gagging him now will make it harder for him on the road, but can you trust him?

You nod. He's right on all accounts. This is a bad spot, but it's not the worst you've been in. In fact, you have a long history of getting out of tough spots...

Rebba squeezes your hand under the table, but otherwise she appears calm.

"So, my little darlings, I'll ask again. Where. Is. My. Money?!" That last sentence tightens your throat. When Isfah starts spitting words out like that, he is just about at breaking point. But you can't tell him the truth, that you and your sister lost last night's take on a bad gamble.

Rebba tries lying again. "Father," - he likes it when she calls him that - "we just kept finding skinny pidgeons. You know how it is."

Isfah leans across the table and strokes your sister's cheek. "Yes, I know how it is, my dear. I know that you are a liar and a cheat!" With that he slaps her across the face.

As you gasp and struggle, Isfah screams at you. "You have always been such greedy children! I never should have taken you in! My own bleeding heart has always been my downfall." He now turns morose, but his fingers are still tight around your throat. "I always wanted... to help people. But nobody is grateful!" You can't breathe and your vision is blurring.

You push feebly at Isfah's hands one more time. He starts to complain through his tears, then screams in agony. Isfah lets you go and turns to lunge at Rebba, but she darts out of reach and he falls to his knees. He whimpers piteously, trying to get his hand to the knife in his back.
