You were a 30 year old awkward lonely overweight virgin neckbeard who lived in his mother's basement. You were granted the unusual birthday present of being turned into a petite female elven bard and dropped naked in the middle of a forest. You and the gentle orc ranger, Jack Carson, became traveling partners after he rescued you from the wilderness. After being kidnapped by wild elves, your guard, Varaia, helped you escape, banishing herself in the process. After tenuous bickering, she joined you and Jack in your travels.

You all boarded a train bound for Newport; two weeks in, you were shot when you foiled a train robbery. You were resuscitated, and some weeks later a team of robbers used explosives to derail the train, wanting to get the money it was carrying. You managed to help fight them off, then rode to Newport to get marshal reinforcements. Jack found out he needed to go to Mildania to save his brother and sister from the Blackmountain organized crime family, so you all boarded a cargo ship as crew for the two week ride to Mildania.

You just finished your shift for the first day. Jack's long asleep in his bunk - he went to bed after dinner - and Varaia's asleep too, having finished her shift an hour before yours. You decide to nod off too, tired from the long day of utility magic.

The next week passes almost in a blur. Do you do anything in particular during your working hours or your leisure time during the next week?

I know that last time I said that it'd be hard to study on a ship, but do you think that maybe we could try to make progress on our own enchantments? (Since we're taking down a crime syndicate, being able to scare people might be pretty effective.)

Same with Jack, what kind of healing magic will he learn throughout the week?

Varaia...Maybe she can start fletching arrows or learning some magic of her own.

How is the ship powered? It's some sort of magical equivalent of diesel, or what?

We could ask Jack if he has any idea what sort of orcish relics might the ship be carrying.

Don't forget to take the guitar out if the mess hall is populated enough while we're there. Practice makes perfect, and we still owe that elf boy a rematch. Try to milk him for some more information, like perhaps family.

Tell him a story or two from our travels, for instance the train raid one, perhaps, so he doesn't get the feeling he's the only one talking.

You spend most of your down-time on the ship reading the book on enchantment that you bought and occasionally playing music in the mess. You're barely a quarter of your way into the book and already learning a lot. You wish that you could get more practice in, but very few people seem willing to let you use magic to mess around with their mind. Even Jack and Varaia take lots of convincing, and even then only allow you the occasional attempt.

Jack manages to read all the way through his book on magical first aid over the course of the week. He's started to practice by healing scratches and bruises that the other crewmen acquire through normal work. It tires him a bit, but he seems to have a knack for it. Varaia spends most of her down time watching the ocean and talking to the crew, finding out more about Mildania and the city of Mild.

At the end of the week, around mid-day, word goes around that someone just spotted land. Anyone who can rushes to the top deck to look. Mildania is there, with great white cliffs banded with pink and grey, forests above and vines dangling down. The air here is hot and humid, and most people have started to take to leaving their shirts partially unbuttoned and sleeves rolled up past the elbows.

"I love coming back south," says Aliade. Apparently he moved up beside you while you were looking. "It reminds me of the jungles of Seelie."

We have a double-play going here.
1: We're being a nice person, making a friend.
2: We're confusing the crap out of a potential rival. Are we playing a game? Trying to manipulate him? Throw him off his guard to betray him later? Can he ever believe that we're truly just what we say we are? He's fighting centuries of cultural indoctrination, and in 2 days we've challenged almost everything he knows about us.

I'm not saying we should take advantage of him, but I am pointing out that the damage is done-and-ongoing, and that the potential to exploit him is there.

"Do you visit Seelie often?" you ask.

He turns towards you to give you a long, steady look. "Relatively. Once every few decades for a couple years at a time."

"Tell me about it."

"I doubt there's much I could tell you that you don't already know. The heat, the rain, the colourful birds, the grimalkin. I miss the orchards, really. The wine. The smell of home," he says. He sounds nostalgic, maybe a little wistful. "I suppose you feel the same way about the thick canopy of Unseelie and wild hunt." There he goes, back to the game of trying to get information out of you.

"Like I said before, my home is on the open road - or the sea, as it were," you reply. He just sighs and shrugs and starts strolling back to below decks. You get back to work.

Later, that night, after you're done with your work and have gone to bed, you're shaken roughly awake. You almost have one of your guns fully drawn before you realize that the person isn't trying to hurt you. It's one of the ship's officers. "Lass, we need a little help. The engine is spooked, and we were hoping you could take a look at it, being a bard and all. We're getting the feller with the banjo too. We just want you to try to calm it down a touch."

After he says that, you notice that the ship is rolling and rocking unusually. You didn't notice until now how smooth the ship's passage had been.

What do you do?
>>
>>22823648
If we're nothing but nice to him, maybe he won't be a rival at all. We're unlearning all of the prejudice that people of this world usually have, we know that elves and orcs and dwarves aren't evil or terrible simply because of their race. Knowing this, we should be a friend where-ever we can be.

You get up and bring your guitar, trying not to wake Jack or Varaia with any noise. You fail; Varaia sticks her head up and asks, "Wh's going on?"

"They want me to sing to the engine or something," you say, giving her hair a stroke. "Go back to sleep."

When you get down to the engine room, you see that Aliade is already there. The engine itself is pretty simple - a silvery circle inlaid into the floor with the water elemental - really just a glowing puddle - sloshing around inside of it. Cables lead from the circle to a wall, where you presume they lead up to the bridge.

The water elemental is currently sloshing and foaming, like the sea caught in a strong wind.

"I think they want us to talk to it or sing it a song or something," says Aliade as you walk in. "I think we should just cut to the chase and use some enchantment magic to calm it down immediately. What do you think?"

What do you think?
>>
>>22823904
"Aliade, I agree, enchantment would be much faster, but there's also the risk of that sort of compulsion magic upsetting the elemental, which could wreck the whole ship. Let's take it the easy way, okay?"
>>
>>22823904

Let's try with persuasion before we go with coercion. Try to get the elemental to tell us what's wrong, too - It can't be common occurrence, or else they would have a bard or a mage on roster at all times.

"Now, that's just rude," you say. "Let's try a more gentle approach first."

He rolls his eyes. "It's just an elemental. Fine, though. We'll play it a song." He takes out his banjo.

You two both get to work, weaving a spellsong of sleep and rest. It's slow-going, but the effects become gradually apparent. The frothing dies down, then the waves become still. Eventually, it's rolling gently back and forth within the circle, apparently calmed.

Then there's a crack of lightning from high above. The elemental goes crazy again, worse than before. The ship is rocking enough to make your legs, inexperienced with rough seas, have a hard time keeping you stable. You think you can hear yelling from higher decks.

This sounds like a good idea for braving the storm, but that elemental is probably scared for a reason.

"Aliade, go find the captain. I think he needs to know what's going on. I'll keep trying to work with the elemental," you say. He nods and heads back up out of the engine room. You start playing a song of courage and duty, figuring that the elemental must be afraid of something. Over the course of a few minutes, its motions go from choppy and frothy to smooth and hard, still rushing about, but doing so with an apparently purpose of motion.

You hear feet pounding down the stairs to the engine room. Aliade comes bursting through the door, looking scared. "Nona, I think you need to come up to the top deck. Something's going on out there - the sea is wrong. Something's about to happen," he says, then, rather than waiting for a response, turns and dashes up the steps.

Well, fuck, do you keep trying to keep the elemental in control or go up with Aliade? Or something else entirely, like go wake up Jack and Varaia in case you need to get off the ship in a hurry?

You take a few seconds to finish your song, then start rushing back up through the ship, yelling for people to wake up and get on deck. You make a point to go past the room where you, Jack, and Varaia are bunking to get them up. Varaia's already up and picking up her bags; Jack is up and still putting on his shirt. You keep going, trusting them to follow when they're ready, and step out onto the top deck.

What you see is, well, odd. The ship is in a calm patch of sea, but past it in every direction, the ocean is going wild, with tall waves and foam crashing down. Up in the sky, you see a hole of clear night sky and stars surrounded by thick clouds, the occasional crack of lightning streaking across them. You're not sure what's going on, exactly, but it's something magical and big. Much of the crew is standing out on deck, looking worried and confused.

Then you hear a scratching, thumping noise coming from either side of the ship. Things are climbing up it, you realize. You see a scaly, webbed hand come up over the railing a ways down the ship, your eyes able to see fine in the starlight and occasional lantern.

Wait, MP said in a previous thread that, while illusionary fire can't actually damage people, it can cause them pain as if it were real. Set the railings on illusion-fire. A sea-going critter wouldn't have much resistance or experience with catastrophic burns, so they're really going to have a hard time passing through that. It'll give us a distraction and penalize their morale, if nothing else.

"Deep ones!" cries out Aliade. He saw the same hand as you. Your mind goes into overdrive. Deep ones usually operate along coast lines. Sometimes they trade magical boons of good weather for breeding rights with coastal towns' women. Sometimes entire towns are emptied over night, other times ships will drift into port, all of the men dead and all of the women missing.

You immediately start acting. You toss out illusionary globes of light to help illuminate the deck. Varaia runs up behind you; Jack shouldn't be far behind. The Deep Ones are starting to climb up, so you start an illusion of fire, visual and tactile, on as much of the railing as you can; it's not much for a ship this size, but you hear a few horrible screams and splashes from the area where you did it. You start sweeping the fire around, trying to drop more of them.

Aliade does similarly. You draw your wand gun and start taking shots while Varaia starts flinging arrows precisely. The crewmen are fighting hard against them; you three are helping, but these things are tough, and there are a lot of them.

You hear a scream and see one of the deep ones disappear over the railing with one of the cooking women, and then the captain cries out, "GET THE WOMEN BELOW DECK!"

What do you do?
>>
>>22825289

>>22825289
"EVERYBODY NEEDS TO GET BELOW DECK! SET UP BOTTLENECKS AT EVERY BELOW-DECK ENTRANCE! WOMEN FIRST!"

This is some really serious shit. Work with Aliade to weave a powerful spell-song of battle to help your crew out, and keep close to Jack in case one of the Deep Ones grabs you or Varaia.
>>
>>22825289
Call out for everyone to form a bottleneck at the entrance to the insides of the ship so they have to come at us one or two at a time, using their numbers against them.

Make some illusions of the crew's women running out and jumping overboard to swim away, that should confuse and distract them. I brought up the idea in a previous thread: Make an illusion of the Iron Man armor come stomping out of a hold spitting illusionary fire at them. Again, a solid distraction.

The water elemental seemed very upset at their presence, ask the captain if the Elemental would help us kill these things. Also ask if there are any poisons on board we can dump into the sea to distract/harm any caster they have down there manipulating the weather.

If their bodies are tough, then once we get into a bottleneck, start going for headshots.

Fuck it, we're a fa/tg/uy. We know about Deep Ones. Use an illusion to make the Crew look like C'thullu/Dagon. Make ourselves look like Nyarlathotep.

Or whip up some glowing Elder Signs and see if that scares them off.

Bottlenecking is terrible. You have an enemy that can trap you and then sink your ship. You can't repel them, you have to defeat them in their element, so to speak.

They're fixated on women? Use that to your advantage. Entice and ensnare them with a song.

looks like a plan to me
>>
You conjure up some glowing elder signs, hoping to frighten them off. They stop to look at them for a moment, but then continue the attack. You start singing a battle song to sharpen your side and dull the other, helping people move below deck as you do so.

You hear a bellow from behind you as Jack bursts out from below deck, carrying the shotgun and with his rifle slung over his shoulder. He starts firing off shots, cracking a couple deep ones right in the skull with the butt of his weapon. "Stay behind me!" he yells back to you and Varaia. You do your best to oblige.

You keep sweeping your fire illusion around and firing off shots as you sing. After about a full minute of this, Varaia has run out of arrows and has her knife and tomahawk out, opening throats and smashing in foreheads in a whirlwind of violence whenever a deep one gets close. A few more people disappear over the side of the ship, carried by deep ones.

The tide of the battle appears to be turning in your favor, though. There are fewer deep ones on deck than there were before, and the reinforcements are slowing. They've managed to open up some crewmen pretty badly with their claws, but they aren't carrying weapons, and aren't too hard to keep at range when they don't overwhelm with numbers.

Still, the battle could take a while longer and have a few more casualties or kidnappings if something more drastic isn't done to stop this.

Do you do anything more drastic?
>>
>>22825513
If they could guarantee that they'd reach all the women before they drowned, they'd have sunk the boat already. They want to make sure they get the females alive, which means boarding. They're not willing to risk their prize, so they can't sink us. They're forced to play on OUR turf. So we need to maintain the terrain advantage.
>>
>>22825812
We have been looking for targets for enchantment training. So let's make one that's about to swipe it's claws at a crewmember turn it against its fellow deep one. See if we can't instigate some infighting among them that way.
>>
>>22825812
Illusions of Nightgaunts or Mi-Go swooping in to attack them from the skies? If they start getting attacked from two directions at once it may give them second thoughts.
>>
>>22825812
Focus on individual Deep Ones that are ganging up on other crew-mates, being sure to assault them with the illusionary fire and your wand pistol whenever they do get too close. We're getting way too many casualties right now.

Where's Aliade? (don't tell me they took him over the edge) he should be working with you to change the tide of the battle.
>>
>>22825828
Until they realize we're not budging. Which is where we're heading.

They're violent women abudctors, they're not going to just swim away after being spanked when they realize they cannot have their prize. Which is what we're rapidly approaching. We're in the calm of a storm, and unless we can guarantee they wont engulf us in a typhoon we need to think fast. The Water Elemental would NOT be scared for nothing and if they could be defeated by battening down the hatches then there wouldn't be so much reason to fear them.

In other words: Shit's going to get real, soon.
>>
>>22825877
Seconding.

Hell, the hard part of enchanting is doing it safely. MP has already stated that some enchanters attempting self-hypnosis have become locked inside their own minds. Well, who says we have to be safe about it? If we just batter at their minds like a sledge hammer and leave them drooling vegetables, that still helps us win the fight, right?

Actually, third. Enchantment would be a great idea in this situation, and I change my vote to this.

You begin tossing out enchantments - quick, brutal, effective things, messing with the deep ones, one by one, to make them redirect their attacks towards their fellows. This, combined with the effects of your spellsong, is enough for the crew to start pressing their advantage. Aside from a few last-ditch attacks, the deep ones start retreating, grabbing at women as they go but not slowing down when they fail to take hold.

You hear a scream and a clattering.

You spin around. One had gotten around behind you and grabbed Varaia. Her arm looks broken and her weapons are lying on the deck. It's making for the edge of the boat and fast. She looks terrified, and is feebly smacking it with her good arm.

What do you do?

Fury consumes you. No fucking fishman is taking Varaia. You put together a high-powered enchantment - it's quick, it's clumsy, and you don't give a fuck. You are going to crush its fucking mind - tear it to shreds. You let loose with it, and it burns through the deep one's mind like a wild fire, consuming memories, burning skills, and causing it to drop almost instantly to the deck in a wild seizure.

You ruined it.

You see Varaia starting to pull herself up off the ground when the fatigue from that enormous psychic assault hits you. You lose focus with your eyes and start falling to the deck. You fall into darkness.

When you wake up, you're lying in a life boat. You can hear Jack's voice from outside of it.

"Well, I've set it and started the knitting. I'll look at it a few times every day for the next few days or until we can get you to a hospital. Sorry I couldn't do any better."

"It's okay. It's a lot better than I would have been able to do on my own," says Varaia.

You sit up. You can see the sun rising across the water. The life boat, and three more like it, are on a rocky, pebbled shore. Jack and Varaia are at a camp fire on the beach, along with almost two dozen crewmen. Aliade is sitting off to one side, trying to repair the broken neck of his banjo with magic.

You get up and walk over to where Jack and Varaia are. Jack's getting her hooked up in a makeshift sling. "What happened?" you ask.

Varaia immediately pulls you into a one-armed hug. "You saved me is what happened!"

Jack continues, "The deep ones pierced the hull with something after they fell back. We had to abandon ship - we got most of the crew that didn't get killed or kidnapped out. The engine got loose during the sinking and pushed us to shore - I don't think we would have made it without that water elemental."

You give both of them a hug. "I'm glad you two are all right. Or mostly all right." Then you head on over to Aliade. "Need some help with that banjo?"

"Sure," he says, passing it off to you. "I don't think there's much I can do with it. The neck snapped clean in two. Even if you can fix it, I think it will just be a temporary fix."

You take a look at it. You're able to get the neck reconnected via magic... kinda. It's still cracked and frayed and the tension from the strings alone will probably render it useless again in a couple days. Still, it's not much worse than your old guitar now.

"Thanks," he says when you hand it back to him. "Well, we're in Mildania now. Are you, your wild elf, and that handsome orcish gentleman going to be making your way to wherever it is you're going now?"

We're willing to fight fair, put ourselves at a disadvantage, and be civilized and polite if we're the one on the line. "We're heading to Mild," you say, conspiratorially. "I can't get into the details, but assuming we survive, you should hear about it in a few months' time."

He looks at you, looks at the life boats, then looks back. "Thanks for the heads up. I'll try to leave Mildania through a different port than Mild. I have had enough excitement and danger for a while." He plucks the strings on his banjo a bit, then gets to work getting it tuned back up. "Good luck and feel free to look me up if you're ever in Seelie for some crazy reason. Bring your orc friend with you - and that wild elf, I suppose."

You guess some people just don't have the stomach for adventure.

You head back over to where Jack and Varaia are. Varaia stands up and gives you a kiss and says, "Really, I mean it. You saved me. I won't forget that."

You give her a smile. "So, did we get everything when we escaped, or did stuff get left behing?"

"We lost a few things," says Jack. "Your bag and old guitar - I think your had your skirt, your spare ammunition, and your gun belt in that bag. We also lost my bag - that had my spare shirt and my axe head in it. That's about it, I think. Varaia had our cash in her bag."

Well, at least you all still have most of your gear and all of your money.

"I'm out of arrows," says Varaia. "Couldn't get any back before we had to leave the ship. Wasn't in any condition to anyway."

What now?
>>
>>22827596
Let's head to Mild, then, I guess. Stop along the way to see if we can't get a nice wand rifle for Jack, a hospital visit, and maybe an axe (Jack could cut down a couple of trees, which Varaia could then use to make arrows with, I suppose.)
>>
>>22827596

"Don't mention it. You saved me before, didn't you?"

If the remaining survivors are fine on their own, we should head out south. Probably inland, I suppose. Jack takes the point, being experienced in the wilderness and all.

Or we could go with the group. The other survivors will want to go find a town as well.
>>
>>22827596
Let's organize the survivors. We may even pick up some of the cargo that'll arrive on the beaches to barter with in the nearest settlement.
>>
>>22827865
Oh, crap, I forgot that we weren't really in a civilized zone.
Let's rally up the survivors to find some sort of settlement. Gather all of the cargo on the beaches that you can, necessities like guns and tools and food, then the weed and antiques and stuff, then lead the group. You, Varaia, and Aliade lead (with your elven perception to help) and Jack should go around the group, helping with his first-aid healing and woodsman skills.

Let's walk around the beach; there's got to be a port new here somewhere.
>>
You and the other survivors walk up and down the beach for a bit looking for any cargo that washed ashore. What little that did is claimed by the captain. Having done that, you all start walking down the beach, headed south, in the hopes of finding a fishing village or port town or something. Every couple of hours you all stop for people to sit, for Jack to use more healing magic on people's injures, and to have a bit of food and water.

It's getting close to evening when the elves - yourself included - hear the sound of voices and wheels in the distance. The group picks up the pace and soon you're at a small coastal village. The buildings are mostly wooden and so old that moss is growing on their roofs. There are docks at which many small sail boats are moored. The streets are cobbled, and there are a few horses pulling carts up and down them.

You can smell fish and bread cooking, and people are walking around, going about their daily business. It looks like you've finally reached civilization. Most of the group scatters, each going to find whatever it is they're trying to find, be it lodging, food, communication, or what have you.

Oh, and most of these villagers are orcs. Men, women, and children. There are a few dwarves, but the vast majority have green skin and tusks.

"Are you folks all right?" asks a man in black robes and a little white collar band. He comes up to the group and talks mostly to Jack, though still to the group at large.

What do you do?
>>
>>22828139
let jack answer
>>
>>22828139
Let's just walk up to Jack, and let him speak, although we should fill in everything he didn't mention. We need healthcare, some food, beds for people, etc. We're willing to put some work in if it can help out our group.
>>
>>22828139
Let Jack give the first answer, after he's said something say something along these lines.

"We're alright. The ship we were on was boarded and attacked by Deep Ones, we managed to fight them off, but then they sank the ship.

I humbly ask for your hospitality, we have injured tired people that need a place to rest."
>>
>>22828204
this. lets make a nice impression to the priest.
>>
>>22828255
also...just a thought...but we should probably get a disguise for Jack before we arrive in Mild or something....hes still a wanted orc, after all....
>>
"We need some help, father...?" starts Jack.

"Johnson."

"Father Johnson. The ship we were on was sunk by deep ones. We need a place to stay until we can find passage to Mild, and some of these people are injured and hungry."

"Well, you're welcome to stay at the church," says the priest. "We have enough to feed you, and I can take a look at whatever injuries you have too - though no promises on whether or not I'll be able to do anything to help. It looks like most of your group is off finding lodgings or food of their own - I'll go greet them if you want to head on over. We'll be having evening services soon."

"Thank you so much for your hospitality," you say to him. Jack nods in agreement. The priest just smiles at all of you and walks off.

Do you do anything before heading to the church? And are you going to attend services?
>>
>>22828334
After all of those years, maybe they won't even recognize them. Better get one just to be safe, though.
>>
>>22828390
Give Jack a hug and a kiss on the cheek. Then help organizing people to get to somewhere warm and safe, play a uplifting song to keep their spirits up, and then go to services.

Sit with Jack at services.
>>
>>22828390
Walk around to see if there's a general store or some sort of place to stock up on what we missed.
>>
>>22828390

Jack will definitely want to attend the services, I suspect - more importantly, he might want to have a talk with the cleric on his dreams of becoming a paladin.

We should rather not mention what we need to do in Mild. I don't think the good father would approve.

Find a spot for singing a song. I don't know about the church - sure, why not if we know a fitting song, it might help. Otherwise, we could drop into local tavern.
>>
>>22828394
It's only been, what, 3 years? 7% of an Orc's life span but less than a blip to the dwarves who run the place, and even less to an elf. They'll still remember him.

lets go and sing along what church doesn't have singing
>>
You give Jack a hug and a kiss on the cheek, then head off back towards town to find the various people that are wandering freely. Jack and Varaia head for the church. You stop each person from the ship that you see, telling them that the church is available for sleeping, food, and first aid, if they don't prefer to get it elsewhere. Most of them head off towards the church immediately when told.

Once you're done with that, you head on in to the church and take a seat next to Jack. Varaia's off in the corner fiddling with her gear and her arm's sling - she doesn't look comfortable being in the church. You find a hymn book in the pew and sing along when that part comes around. The father's sermon is about peace in death and the guilt of survivors - you find it fitting, and expect he might have changed the sermon just for the occasion.

Once it's all said and done, Jack puts a hand on your shoulder and says, "I need to go to confession, then talk to the father about some things. I'll see you in a bit."

Jack heads off towards the front of the church. Varaia is still in the corner. Aliade is relaxing in a pew, reading a bible. The captain is nowhere to be found - you think he must have gotten a room at the tavern.

What do you do now?

>>
>>22829454
Let's go around and see if we can't find a store to replace our lost supplies or get care for Varaia's arm. After that, we should talk to the survivors and see what they might be missing out on that we can help them with.
>>
You decide to go talk to Varaia. She's still looking very uncomfortable being in the church.

"Are you doing okay?" you ask her.

"Yeah," she says, not sounding like she believes what she's saying. "Sure. I mean. Hey, did you know that this church's savior was apparently the product of their god raping someone? I mean, that's weird, right? That's something that can make you uncomfortable without being rude, right?"

"Uh. Sure, I guess," you say.

She sort of visibly deflates. "I just find this religion really unsettling. It has so much rape and torture - I mean, he was supposedly chained to a rock and eaten by wild animals. I mean, the spirits aren't necessarily kind or anything but... I don't know. It just bothers me."

"Do you want to go to the tavern or something, then?" you ask. You didn't realize how uncomfortable this place might make her. You wonder how she's going to handle Orsalem once you guys finally get there. "I mean, if it's bothering you that much."

"No! No, I mean, it's not that big of a deal. It just makes me kind of uncomfortable. I'm going to wait around and have my arm looked at," she says, gesturing to her sling. "You go ahead if you want, though. Just try not to overexert yourself, that magical punch you did was less than a day ago. I don't want to hear you fainted again."

What next?
>>
>>22829733
Ask around the tavern about where we can find work, or possible a way to get to Mild.

We need to have a nice discussion with the captain about that hazard pay.
>>
>>22829733
Give her a kiss before we go, then hit the pub and get some music played.
>>
>>22829823

Seconding especially the music. Hopefully we'll find the captain, and ask him about the finance. Not that we weren't happy with escaping alive, and we sympathise with the loss of a ship, but hopefully some sort of compensation will be available for our assistance in combat.

I wonder if he was carrying on that ship anything on behalf of the mafia we are about to confront... maybe we could use that information to our advantage.
>>
You give Varaia a kiss to try to make her feel better, then head off for the tavern. You play music for a while, of which the patrons seem rather appreciative. You're glad that your better guitar, at least, made it out of the ship intact. You cycle through a few different genres and plenty of different songs, before stopping on something that the patrons seem to really like - Spanish-style classical guitar.

You keep your eye out for the captain while playing. After a while, you see him come down from above and take a seat at the bar, ordering a tall beer. You take a seat next to him.

"So, when should we be expecting payment?" you ask.

He sighs like he was expecting the question but didn't want it. "Well, it should be a few weeks before my insurance claim goes through. Once it does, you can pick up the pay you're owed, plus some compensation for the dangers, in Mild - or any other port where we have an office. Until then, all I can give you is an IOU."

You kind of expected that to be harder than it was.

"Also, I want to personally thank you for all of that magic you were throwing around back on the ship. I don't know how many of us would have made it out of there without you, but I know that there are men alive who wouldn't have otherwise been. Thank you so much for your help."

Oh. Wow. It actually feels really nice hearing that.

It's starting to get late. How do you handle the rest of your evening?
>>
>>22830206

Assure the captain that we understand his position and that we were glad to be in position to help.

Then rent-a-room and drop for some actual rest in a good bed that is planted firmly on solid ground.

You decide to head back to the church. It's getting late, and Varaia was right about you having used up a lot of your reserves with all of that magic back on the ship. When you get there, you see Jack just finishing up his conversation with the priest. Varaia's off to one side. You see her experimentally move and flex her injured arm, then wince and put it back in the sling. You think Father Johnson must have been able to give her a little bit of healing.

The priest waves you on over to speak with him and Jack. "Johnathon here tells me that you're on your way to Mild to help out his family - though he's been intentionally vague on the specifics. He also mentioned that his family lives in Greenhillshire. Carts go out that way every few days - I could probably convince someone in town to head out there tomorrow if nobody's going already. I can't really help you after that, but I can at least get you that far."

"Thank you, Father," you say.

"Not at all," he says, waving his hand dismissively. "It would be the least I could do in normal circumstances, but I hear Johnathon here is on the pilgrimage. I'm sad I couldn't provide even more help along the path."

You believe him, too. You expect he would give Jack the clothes off his back if he thought it would help.

"There are beds in the back. Food too. Feel free to make use of them," he says before heading back towards his office.

>>
Stop with all that kissing shit. Ask Jack and Varaia if they want some food. If you get a chance to be alone with Jack ask about his conversation with the priest. Then get some sleep.
>>
You give Jack and Varaia each a hug, then head into the back. You're really tired and could use a rest. The beds back there are narrow - you doubt Jack will be able to fit comfortable in one by himself, let alone trying to snuggle in one. You have a few bites of food, then just sort of crash, curling up in bed and dozing. You're still half-awake when first Varaia comes in and goes to sleep, then Jack comes in and sprawls out on a bed.

The last thing that you think about before you're completely asleep is how glad you are that Varaia didn't get taken and that both of them made it off the ship alive.

Then you dream.

You dream of dark memories, of shredding minds, of remaking thoughts.

You dream.
