You were a 30 year old awkward lonely overweight virgin neckbeard who lived in his mother's basement. You were granted the unusual birthday present of being turned into a petite female elven bard and dropped naked in the middle of a forest. You and the gentle orc ranger, Jack Carson, became traveling partners and recently lovers after he rescued you from the wilderness.

After being kidnapped by wild elves, your guard, Varaia, helped you escape, banishing herself in the process. After tenuous bickering, she joined you and Jack in your travels.

You all boarded a train bound for Newport; two weeks in, you were shot when you foiled a train robbery. You were resuscitated, and some weeks later a team of robbers used explosives to derail the train, wanting to get the money it was carrying. You managed to help fight them off, then rode to Newport to get marshal reinforcements. Having resolved the situation with the train, you and your companions moved on to Newport, where Jack recently got the news that his family is in trouble with the man who framed him and the organized crime family who supports him. You've promised to go with him to Mildania to lay down the law.

You're currently still sitting in bed, Varaia's still asleep next to you, and Jack is preparing to go out and find out what ship fare to Mildania costs.

What do you start your day with?

Go with Jack to plan for the ship fare, leave a note for Varaia telling her about it. We'll still need to buy concealed holsters and maybe some light armor for the road ahead, but we need to know if we can do that first.

Why? No, seriously, why? What's hard leather going to do against a bullet?

Well, first order of business, you're going to head out with Jack to help pick out which ship you're going to go with. You leave a quick note for Varaia on one of the envelopes that Jack discarded from the letters he was reading explaining the basics of the situation, then you and Jack set out.

An hour later, after talking to a lot of captains and shipping representatives, you've narrowed your options down to one of four vessels, each set to leave tomorrow. The first is a standard passenger vessel - it won't cost any more to book a room on it than it did to get your cabin on the train. The second is a cargo ship - it's cheap, but you would basically be camping down in the hold, since there are no rooms for non-crew. The third is also a cargo ship, but they're offering to hire you on for the trip to Mildania; you would get paid and get your own bunks, but you would be expected to work on the trip there. The last is a luxury airship; it would drain just about all of your current funds to book a room on it, but it's extremely luxurious and would get you to your destination in half the time of the other ships.

Jack looks to you for guidance; he's not going to make a decision for you if you're right there to ask, after all.
>>
>>22789010
I vote for the luxury ship, if for nothing else than we'd get there faster. as well, we happen to be a pretty awesome bard, not too many worries about money....
>>
>>22789010
>The third is also a cargo ship, but they're offering to hire you on for the trip to Mildania; you would get paid and get your own bunks, but you would be expected to work on the trip there.
How are they expecting us to work?
A working fare is a productive trip.
>>
>>22789010
I vote the third cargo ship, it's really hard to do anything productive with music/reading on ships anyways, and we'll benefit from the funds.

How much are they willing to pay us?
>>
>>22789143
>200 crowns apiece for the trip; you'll be expected to do chores and other basic work aboard the ship; Jack will probably also be expected to do heavy lifting
>>
>>22789170
Are we at least somewhat healed up? If so, might as well make it a productive job.
>>
>>22789070

While dropping all of our funds seems not very prudent thing to do, we will probably have plenty of opportunity for loot while taking apart a syndicate.

Before we loot our first mafia holdout, though, we'll be in danger of being left without resources to, say, treat a wound.

Also, skim the enchanting book for any description of materials that are good for enchanting, or possibly reagents needed for the process so that we might practice on the way - unless the airship is too sensitive and with a no-magic-aboard policy. (if we're taking the airship that is)
>>
>>22789196

Enchanting is mind-bending magic, not the creation of magic items.
>>
>>22789196
>we will probably have plenty of opportunity for loot while taking apart a syndicate.

>we're going to charge in and kill everyone, us vs people with guns and then probably the police, then loot the place
>we're going to have no allies and no planning and no funds to resource such an operation
>when we realise that's utterly foolish, we'll certainly be able to pick up funds and let everyone know HEY GUYS JACK IS BACK IN TOWN YOU KNOW THE GUY WHO'S BROTHER IS KILLING US
Riiiiight. Let's go with the "earning money" route and having some resources available.
>>

Ah, fair enough. That's something that differs by a setting. Disregard the suggestion then.

pick up hidden holsters

what do dwarves do with there dead?

how big of a family does this mobster have?

and are criminals a cowardly and superstitious lot?

We could go Batman !

or lets try and find a alchemy shop so long as we are at it see if they got any uranium
any 12 year old with that and some explosives could make a Gun-type fission weapon or at least a dirty bomb

Do we know of a competing gang we could align ourselves with for purpose of this operation? Alternately we could try and enter employment of Blackmountains themselves to snoop them out. Going straight to the authorities we can probably rule out right away, as they are certain to have a contact there.

how hard would it be to find his family's catacombs
a necromancer that the Blackmountain family
pissed off

break in with illusion steal body's then raze a small army of there friends and family to attack them?
>>
>>22789473

I get the feeling this would result in swift and brutal end preceded by great drama within party.

Besides, we don't know any necromancy. Best we could do is illusion of zombies that any hired mage worth his salt would see through before we managed to fool anyone.
>>
>>22789537
thats why we hire a necromancer to actually do the razing for us ideally one that has a grudge agents the family there criminals I am sure they have made a few powerful enemies
>>
>>22789601

I do not support this motion. I'm not sure what the dwarvish stance on necromancy is, but in all likelihood it would at best end up with us being hunted not only by the mafia, but also by the law, and shunned by the public. And it would ruin Jack's hopes of becoming a paladin, should he decide to go along, which is far from certain.

Rolled 87

Maybe.we should focus on what's going on now instead of later. I still think we should use the airship, since we're in a hurry.
>>
>>22789790
yes, we can formulate an attack plan on the way there.
>>
You vote for the ship on which you would be expected to work. After all, you'll make some extra funds for the gang war you're probably going to be starting, you're no stranger to hard work after the past few days, and it will probably be the least-conspicuous way to enter Mildania. The airship was your second pick, if for no other reason than that it was fast, but the other one won out for you in the end.

Jack informs the captain of the cargo ship that he, you, and Varaia will be coming aboard tomorrow and can work until Mild, at which point you'll be disembarking. The captain agrees and everything seems sorted on that front.

"I'm heading back to the post office," says Jack as you're leaving. "I'm going to send out a few letters to acquaintances back in Mild to prepare for our arrival. The letters should arrive a day or two before we do, at least. You should go see if Varaia's up and get started on whatever it is you want to do while we're still in Newport."

You nod and head off. When you arrive back at the room, Varaia's sitting on the couch, fully dressed. She asks what the plan is, having apparently read the letter, and fill her in on the details.

"Well, what do you want to do first, then?" asks Varaia. "Jack said something about concealed holsters last night, didn't he?"

That's a good question. You've got a fair bit of money on hand since you're not paying for transport. What do you want to do first?
>>
>>22789825
Well, obviously, we should get the concealed holsters, maybe a gun bag for Jack's rifle, and a cover for Varaia's bow.
>>
>>22789866
seconded.
>>
"I want to get a pair of concealed holsters for myself," you say. "After that, maybe a long bag that Jack can put his rifle in. Do you want something like that for your bow?"

"That bag you gave me before, with the shotgun and money in it, is plenty big enough for my bow and arrows. That's a good idea for yourself and Jack, though. I'll come around and help you shop."

You set out through the understreets and eventually come upon a store for firearms and firearm accessories. They have concealed carry holsters for the inside of your belt, inside your boot around your ankle, inside of a jacket under your shoulder, and so on. They have a variety of bags that could be used to hide a rifle as well as a few nice cases that could be used to carry pistols and disassembled long arms.

They also have walls of weapons. Staff rifles, wand guns, revolvers, lever-action rifles, lever-action shotguns, breech loaded shotguns, bolt-action rifles, autoloader rifles, pump-action shotguns, autoloader pistols - they have a lot. It's a great big wall of temptation and violence, and puts the dinky little general store back in Salvation to shame - not that you would expect anything less from a dedicated gun shop in a big city.

So, what all do you buy?
>>
>>22790335
Shoulder holster works nicely for one gun, belt works for the other one. Hard to get a gun from inside your boot in most situations.

No need to get more weapons - did we manage to keep the magic stungun?
>>
>>22790363
>your current weapons are a .357 revolver and a wand pistol that fires streaks of heat and kinetic energy that fuck up flesh and cloth something fierce but dissipate on metal and other hard surfaces to the point that they hit less like a bullet and more like a hammer
>think of it less as a stungun and more as a powerful gun that does poorly against armor
>you have yet to name either weapon, if you're even going to bother with that
>>
>>22790363
It might have lost a few charges, we should see about getting it recharged fully. Actually, maybe we should see about the price of a decent wand rifle that Jack could use, maybe get one that's just plain stronger instead of one like what we have.

If we were gonna name the wand pistol, I would go for something like Firebrand or Dragon Snout.

while on the topic of stunguns, perhaps getting a non-lethal weapon might be advisable if we wish to extract some information from our adversaries.
>>
>>22790454
I cometely mis-read the word 'snout'

Since the wand gun has finite charges, we should keep that as a backup in the shoulder holster. The .357 should be our primary weapon. The knife jack got for us can go in a boot since we'll only need it for emergencies.

How well did bard training prepare us for non-audible arts? Can we draw? Paint? If so we should start sketching out some propaganda posters.
>>
>>22790875
>you can draw, paint, sculpt, and though there aren't really any cameras, be they still or motion, you can compose illusions quite well too
>also, wand guns can be recharged by anyone with even rudimentary magical knowledge, so long as they know how to move energy around
>it can be extremely exhausting, though, especially if you're not trained in evocation, since that's THE school of moving large amounts of energy around
>>
>>22790912
Like i said. The wand is harder to recharge at the moment. It'll make a good backup, though.

Yeah, if we get spare time we need to start drafting some propaganda posters to undermine the blackmountains.
>>
You acquire a shoulder holster, a concealed holster that fits nicely on the inside band of the back of your pants, and a bag for Jack's rifle. They fit comfortably on you, and you plan to put your guns in them when you get back to the hotel room. While you're at it, you also buy a boot sheath for your knife, just in case. You don't buy any additional or replacement weapons yet, since you don't really want to blow your funds all at once before you even know what exactly you'll have to deal with in Mildania.

"Is there anywhere you want to go while we're in the city?" you ask Varaia.

"Well, I would still like to see the areas around the Seelie and Unseelie conclaves, but aside from that, I'm fine just getting in some shopping. There are so many people, so many sights and sounds here. It's a lot like I pictured it, but it's exciting just to be here."

Where to next?
>>
Rolled 7

lets get a shotgun or something that we knopw can perice armor well. surely those mafia punks will have some sort of armor
>>
>>22791072
The .357 we have seems to pierce armor pretty well. Also, we're terrible with longarms. Also, Jack has a rifle, which would make a shotgun pointless if what you want is armor penetration. Also, shotguns are bad at penetrating armor unless you're firing deer slugs. Also, we still have that pump-action shotgun in Varaia's bags if we do end up needing a shotgun.
>>
>>22791053

>>
>>22791689
thirded. especially on the stay outta trouble bit
>>
You and Varaia set out for the neighborhoods surrounding the fae conclaves in the city. The architecture in these districts is starkly different. You see ceramic and glass and polished metals in the Unseelie district, with polished wood, brass, and careful engravings and embossing in the Seelie district. Elves make up the majority in these areas, the men and women nearly indistinguishable, though plenty of dwarves and a few humans still walk these streets. You even see a few orc manservants and chauffers moving about, dressed in demeaning uniforms and not looked directly at by the other pedestrians.

There are also elven guards, dressed in crisp uniforms with bits of shining armor on top. They wear swords and wands, and march with an attentive grace that reminds you of a bird of prey gliding around as it seeks its next target. Eyes tend to gravitate towards Varaia in both districts, suspicion and dislike on faces, but doubly so against you personally when within Seelie areas. Now that you get a good look at Seelie and Unseelie in person, it's clear that the colors of the Seelie are slightly warm, while the Unseelie are slightly cool. It's also clear to you that you're Unseelie, at least in coloration.

"It's beautiful," Varaia remarks about the districts. "I wonder how long it took them to build all this. A lot of it looks antique, but this city wasn't even here a couple centuries ago."

Do you do anything while here in these districts?
>>
>>22792377

Talk to some Elves, find out what they're about, if anyone asks, we just say that we have no memories of ever interacting with either of the courts and are curious. Find out if there's ways for wild elves to gain membership of a court.
>>
So wait - what exactly is the plan, once we get to Mild? Are we just going to wipe out the whole Blackmountain family, just kill mobster who blackmailed Jack in the first place, free his brother and sister...

What're our goals/plans?
>>
You decide to look around for any book stores that might be in the fae districts, and you do find quite a few. You browse their history sections and find both hilariously biased. The War of Unseelie Aggression/The War of Faerie Reconciliation. The 'great experiment' of 'civilizing orcish savages,' i.e. the orcish slave trade. Accounts of the rival courts as uncivilized backwaters with poor economies, shriveling cultures, and antiquated magic and technology.

It's really quite hilarious.

You also look into Wild Elves, how one can become a Wild Elf, and how one can cease to be a Wild Elf. It seems that any of the fae races who does something to get banished from a court without getting killed ends up a Wild Elf, their skin, hair, and eye colourations changing to match. One of the wild fae can then rejoin in a number of ways - marrying into a court, getting knighted for whatever reason, or proving innocence in faerie court of whatever they or their ancestors were accused of being the most common three.

You look around, realizing something. There are very few of the small folk in the districts - it's mostly the Sidhe. Perhaps the small folk rarely have motive to leave? Or maybe they just lack the means.

Well, that was interesting. Varaia is still walking around and looking at things, her mouth slightly open and eyes wide - she's really interested in this Court stuff.

What's next on your agenda for the day?
>>
>>22793663

"Would you like to align yourself with one of the courts, Varaia?"

Since we're going to come close to the elf lands, we might find opportunity to earn sufficient amount of prestige for her to be knighted. Or married, if we'll not be vying for the position ourselves. I doubt she would be interested in undoing whatever it was her ancestors have done to piss the govt off, if she even knows.

>>22793663
We should try to get a book on Evocation, maybe ask Varaia if she wants to learn magic. It would be pretty useful for recharging the wand pistol. Also go to a licensed gun-store and ask around about the wand guns. I want to see what the other types do.
>>
>>22794062

I doubt it. We're not originally an elf after all.

I would've preferred the knighting route though, as it reeks of ADVENTURE!

Who knows, maybe that mafia we're gonna be facing is also holding an elf nobility hostage as side business? If not, we could just make it our next waypoint on our route to Orsalem.
>>
You decide to check out a Seelie tavern, hoping to maybe meet another performer, maybe of a completely different tradition. On the way, you decide to ask Varaia some questions about how she ended up a Wild Elf.

"So, the book I read said that the Wild Elves are all either Court members who were kicked out or descended from them. Do you know what you or your ancestor did to make that happen?" you ask.

Varaia actually snorts with laughter. "No, the Courts have it all wrong. Wild is the default. The courts were founded tens of thousands of years ago when two rival tribes made pacts with the Great Spirit of Air and Darkness and the Great Spirit of Earth and Light - Unseelie and Seelie themselves. The Queens are the living hosts of the Great Spirits and all their magic - that's why the Courts are so powerful. We're not Wild Elves - we're Free Elves. Or Independent Elves. Those days are coming to an end, though. We're not going to have the wilderness much longer, so it's time to finally pick sides."

Huh. You did not realize any of that.

"You do want court membership, though?"

"Of course. That's the only way I'm going to survive long-term - the only way any of the Wild Elves will survive long-term. By becoming Sidhe of one of the courts."

By this point, you arrive at the Seelie tavern. As you and Varaia stroll through the doors, the entire place goes silent, all eyes on you. From one corner, you hear a banjo strum - a dueling challenge. What do you do?

I was thinking we'd play something like this.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-7C8ltmwnCc

I'll warn you, its pretty vulgar.
>>
The battle begins. Initial chords are traded, harmonies and discords struck. Speed is the first to be added, slowly building. Then complexity. Musical feints and jabs, bardic conversations.

You look over at your adversary. It's - oh, hell, you can barely tell when they're standing up - it's either a flat-chested woman or a standard elven man. Hair the colour of sunshine, long and pulled up, and eyes the colour of summer leaves. They look almost like a Seelie counterpart to yourself.

Fingers are flying, strings singing, and your opponent suddenly flashes you a white, toothy grin. You feel the subtle tension of magic in the air - this just stopped being a purely musical contest and started being a contest of spellsong. You can hear cheering start, mostly cheering your opponent.

You fight back. When they give a pull, you give a push. When they push, you pull and keep them off balance. Your opponent looks surprised, apparently expecting a more up-front contest of the bards. That's not how Unseelie does it, though, apparently.

This goes on for minutes, your fingers literally becoming blurs as each of you try to out-maneuver each other. It ends when your hand cramps. The complex tension of bardic music collapses in a cascade of illusionary sparks.

"Your playing was exquisite," your opponent says, outstretching... his? His hand? "Your guitar is a piece of shit, though."

Varaia has a hand on your shoulder and is glaring at him.

What's your reaction?

You give Varaia's hand a reassuring squeeze and shake the bard's hand with your other.

"Yeah. I've been meaning to get something better, but I haven't gotten around to it yet," you say.

"I suppose a graduate of Stormgate must have a hard time handling the frontier," he responds. You blink for a moment before you recall something with your bardic knowledge - Stormgate is the major port in Unseelie, and where its premiere bardic college is. He's phishing you, trying to see if you're a Stormgate graduate, and whether you're in from the frontier or in from somewhere else based on your response. You realize quite suddenly that this bard battle isn't actually over yet, it's just changed fields.

"I suppose they must," you respond. You give him a wry smile and his eyes practically flash with excitement. He changes his posture just a few angles towards you. You're pretty sure it's a he.

"Let's order drinks, maybe something to remind you of home, as my treat," he says. He's probing you to see where you're from and where your contacts and allies lie.

"That sounds wonderful, but I doubt they have anything like that - something local perhaps," you say. You bat your eyelashes - etiquette demands that he complies with your polite request. He orders all three of you beers that are served in mugs the size used for espresso - it's the perfect size for your tolerance and that potency of drink.

"Your friend, is she from around here?"

Varaia opens her mouth to answer.

What do?
>>
>>22795094
Nothing! She can answer for herself, I guess.
>>
>>22795094
Cut her off, this is not her field of battle.

"I suppose she might be, I haven't bothered asking her yet.

I'm Nona by the way, and you are?"
>>
>>22795241
No, we have to do this without telling an overt lie.
>>
>>22795207
Agreed!
>>
You hold your tongue, letting her answer for herself. You figure letting him gain some ground is less important than being respectful towards Varaia.

"Oh, I've lived here and there," says Varaia, casually.

Oh, fuck yes, she sees the game going on too. You're really glad you didn't interrupt her now, and make a note not to underestimate her in the future.

Your opponent just smiles.

"My name is Aliade," he says. You're pretty sure that's a male name in the Seelie court. Still, that's a concession of defeat either way. "I studied at Westbrook."

"I'm Nona," you say. You don't want to lie and tell him the name of some Unseelie academy, even if he would believe it.

"Nona, huh?" he asks, leaning in ever so slightly more. "That's quite an unusual name. Where did you say you were from, again?"

What do you say to that?

"I was born way over in Orsalem, and I've been moving around a helluva lot ever since."

We'll get to see if he has any prejudice against orcs this way, and we don't actually tell him anything.
>>
>>22795709
"I didn't." Give him our nicest smile. "And I travel enough that my origin isn't really that important."
>>
>>22795795
This. "The road is where I'm most at home."
>>
>>22796090
>>22795795
o yea XD
>>
>>22796090
>>22795795
These two.
>>
"I didn't," you say, giving him your best smile. "I travel a lot. I'm most at home on the road." You realize that's actually a little true. After so many weeks of traveling, you really have gotten used to it.

"Well, I think I've taken up enough of your time," says Aliade. You're sure he's going to try to learn more about you with whatever contacts he has back at Court. "Feel free to have another drink on me if you like. I hope you enjoy your stay in Newport, however long you've been here, and however long you're staying." Then, with a smirk and a flourish, he's strolling off across the room, playing his banjo.
