We just had a great thread proving that, with some removals and reskinning, you can turn Bleach into an interesting setting with the potential for a lot of great stories and fascinating characters.

We can do the same with Naruto, but it will take considerably less work because the majority of your work will be removing all this ridiculous Madara Uchiha bullshit and instead focus on the idea of young ninjas doing missions around the world to earn their rank as a more skilled and valuable ninja.

Naruto is one of those "Settings with great potential" but it's got really bad story.

How to make legend of Wulin into a semi-freeform awesome system:
1.You may now throw dice allies to boost their numbers. Eg ally has 3x4 = 34, you also have 2x4, so you describe how you help him and add up to a 5x4 = 54.
This makes it so that all players at the table sit on the edge of their seats for the whole session and promotes teamplay.

2.Defending with 5 more than the attack turns it into a counter. E.g defending with 40 when a dude attacks you with 20, makes it so that you counter his attack and he now has to defend.

We tried this and it resulted in the most intense fight-scenes we ever saw.

Until that point we had a pretty good idea of how powerful all the most powerful ninja we'd been introduced to were. I'd make it so that things like the Sharingan took a fuckton of exp to unlock. You'd have to seriously gimp your character for more than a few sessions, have his buddies help him and he get lucky more than once before he finally got it down. Then he'd pretty much catch up with the rest of the group. Make him a kind "Magikarp" as it were. That also ensures he's a good player that the others want to help as "That Guy" could never pull it off.

But still, time and exp spent unlocking his "bloodline limit" is time/exp not spent on unlocking other skills/ninjutsu. A "normal" ninja can still take them if they're smart. Think Rock Lee vs. Sauske before his bullshit. Don't matter if you know what I'm about to do thanks to hax eyes, if I'm so fast your body can't react in time then it's really a moot point. Same thing should be emphasized. Yeah, that power kicks ass and all, but there's more than a few ways around it and don't you DARE forget it or you WILL get raped.

Also, you'd have to do is convince the rest of the party that you're worth holding on to and keeping alive, that you are in a very real sense an investment on their part. Keep you alive and one day, they will all have a valuable team player that, thanks to this power finally being unlocked, won't drag them down after the investment is made yet won't overshadow them completely. Plus, even if you are a good investment, they won't want to make it if you're "that guy". So even if the build is OP long run, you wouldn't leverage it too much because you would have convinced them all, even the GM, that you are "this guy". And honestly, you can trust "this guy" with most anything.

Plus, they serve the purpose of fleshing out the "third world," of the setting. Adding some organization and "humanity," to Hueco Mundo was much needed in terms of Bleach's completeness as a storytelling base.

The only real problem with the whole situation was the power creep involved and lacking elegance in the storytelling.

There was nothing wrong with the Arrancars Attack The City arc. Even parts of the Mexico arc were pretty good, though the quality of that story was a long roller coaster of highs and lows.

After Grimmjow was defeated things got pretty awful, though even then there were a few very occasional good parts all the way through Aizen's defeat, though they got fewer and further between. Things never recovered after the timeskip though. Fullbring arc was awful and Quincy Nazis are dumb as hell too.

I've always thought Naruto can make an amazing setting; it has interesting tech, a mixture of spiritual and magic that integrate with the real world in relatively interesting ways, and a clan/caste system that appeals to me on many levels, as well as the whole kekkai genki thing.

The main problem I've had with it is the art style/aesthetic is generic ninja-stuff until about..was it the Pein Arc that really introduced some cool concepts? I think it was. Or Killer Bee.

If you could really focus on some of that kind of stuff, it could be easily usable. Hell, my main problem is that Naruto isn't used as well as he could be; he's an interesting character until the end of the Zabuza arc, then it just goes in as predictable ways as it could go. His obsession with Sasuke as well.

Maybe think of it another way. Its not about how many techs they can copy, its about what they as a character can do.

Certain jutsu requires skill level of such and such to do. PC does not have that level in that skill, they can't use that jutsu.

Then have other jutsu that are just about impossible to copy, the shadow based jutsu of Shikamaru and the nara clan were never copied by kakashi or an uchiha, despite being really really fucking useful. These are Hiden jutsu in the manga, basically secret jutsu, give such really useful or otherwise difficult techniques a tag of "Hiden", meaning can not be stolen.

There's actually a manga called Soul Eater NOT which focuses on characters that are not powerful. The class in Soul Eater has been explained to be a special "super achiever" class. NOT is basically just showing the world without the insane powerlevels.

So basically yea, special boodlines make you a PC, but there's also non-special bloodline PCs.

And pretty much all of Black*Star's power comes from his own training. Its Tsubaki that comes from a super special powerful bloodline. Black*Star just got the alienation and disgust of people because of the clan he was from. Rest is all him.

Though I never finished it, I found HxH to be fascinating. It has elements from nearly ever major shonnen manga/anime ever, but mixes it around into something wholly original.
The ki stuff is a mix between One Piece's haki and the sword power stuff from Bleach.
The protagonist is unbelievably generic, almost a clone of Goku from the early Dragon Ball, but then gets turned around and actually gets how to deal with people. He's trusting, but only because of his "you really think you'll win if you betray me" mentality.
The blonde kid is Sasuke, but likeable somehow. His relationship with his family threatened to turn the series into another crappy Naruto/Sasuke-who-gives-a-fuck series, but then his family just up and decides that he should be free to live his own life and they go off on adventures.
That group of assassins/thieves had its own Akatsuki thing going on, turned to 11 because other-Sasuke (the red-eyed person I totally thought was a chick for over 100 chapters) had the exact same revenge thing going on (replacing Itachi with the whole gang), but then red-eyed guy totally handled it like a boss and nothing happened like I expected.

Every time I think he's going somewhere generic and boring with the plot he laughs at my expectations and does something different. I've never seen a work of fiction of any type that was that good at manipulating the genre, which changed my opinion from hat to love and back again so frequently, or which... I don't even know, it's such a jigsaw of borrowed elements that I feel like I should hate it, but I can't.

I stopped reading when not-Cell showed up and started wrecking shit, but only because I started working while taking classes again.

That series boggles my mind.

I think it would be doable, but I am not intricately aware of how MnM would work like this. Weapons need some Alternate Form, inherent abilities, etc. and Meisters are going to need to accomodate the weapon's properties.

The biggest challenge lies in the fact that its a symbiotic relationship between those two. Each player may want to actually play two characters to make it more interesting.

For Legends of the Wulin, the big hurdle is working out how to handle all of the clearly supernatural creatures that have, and have had, such a huge impact on the setting. You will have to write a LOT of custom Lore Sheets, but by understanding their use and the applications of Destiny and Entanglement, pretty much everything should fall into place eventually.

One Piece has outsold Dragon Ball quite a few times over.
It is hands down, no argument, indisputably the best selling and most popular series in Japan right now. You can't walk into most shops without finding some One Piece related merchandise.

You know why America hasn't really caught onto the craze was because Funimation royally screwed the pooch and butchered the series when it aired it, permanently turning most people off the show because of squirt guns and "GOTTA GO GOTTA GO" rap song intros.
