"This is the place!" Your good friend Elloy strode towards the large cave entrance, despite there being nothing but an inky blackness past what light came from the outside.

Lagging behind, you and the other misadventured soul that had been dragge into this venture stared at each other, then sighed.

You were at the foot of the Jennu Caves, a complex of natural tunnels that went through part of Throden Vertichai, a Mountain Range on the fringe of the continent you were adventuring in.

"He seems so excited to go into one of the most dangerous places in the realm..." Your comrade for this venture, a freeman reknown for his skill with the crossbow named Velkins, expressed his worry for your friend's attitude.

Of course, having known him for a while, you knew he was the type to behave like this. Elloy of the Swift Hand was not one to stand still for long, drawn to the promise of treasure like a moth drawn to flames.

However, his greed resulted in you being drawn into quite a sort of misadventures, oft deadlier than not. You would've surely perished in quite a bit of those, were you not a...

Dunno man, he mentions lots of utility spells. Sounds pretty dnd-like to me.

>>22738564
It says we can use catalysts to power up our spells, but doesn't mention requiring them, so If we assume the wizard gets the standard set of spells, that would mean that when we run into some kind of magical artifact we can use it to temporarily turn Magic Missile into Magic Nuke.

>>22738969
Well, i wanted to know more about things like: Do we need spells or do we improvise, do we use mana or prepare spells or have limited uses a day. That stuff.
>>
>>22738759
It was going to be explained in later posts, but OK.

Basically, Ruthelian mages spend a long amount of time during training in spiritual purification. This is because they need to insert the knowledge of the spell into themselves- It's not like a Wizard that needs material components to prepare a spell, these mages use their spiritual life force to power the spells. The longer they hold the spell in their bodies the more it starts to fizzle out and lose effectiveness, hence the use of catalysts to minimize cost.

Kind of like sorcerers, only they can't cast every trick in the book unless they've spent an entire day engraving it into them.

You have a wide variety of utility spells which I haven't written down but are pretty easy to improvise since they cost little. Feather fall, lighting up dark areas, conjuring food or water, etc.

The combat-important spells are listed and are limited at the start, you haven't been adventuring for long despite the character's claims.

Also, we need a name. Get to it, /tg/.

>>22739105
So how often does this engraving of spells into themselves have to be done?
And since the casting of the spells is based upon the mage's life force, there's no real set limit, just that the mage feels themselves getting more tired the more they cast?

The Ruthelian Republic is famous for designing its own school of magic. This recent, budding school has a new way of using magic, which has allowed it to compete with the more traditional ways. In order to spread the knowledge of this magic system in an organized way, it has set up a great many universities across its territory. You were a graduate from one such university, and your magic had saved you countless misfortunes.

You drew your silver catalyst from within your robes, and smirked as Velkins stared at you with surprise. "He won't be going anywhere without my help." You said, as you walked up to the fleet-footed adventurer.

Elloy turned towards you. There was a bright grin on his face, as he nonchalantly bounced the sword on his left hand, in what you knew was a quirk he did whenever he had high expectations of something. In other words, you were deeply worried.

"Miles! Does this not excite you!? Again, the call of treasure is near us! The Jennu caves are largely uncharted, because rarely one so bold as us has dared venture inside!" You were pretty sure that the ones that had usually gone there weren't keen on returning, though...

"Yes, yes, I'm quite excited." As you replied to your friend in a stoic tone, you waved your catalyst and grasped for the "Orb of Light" spell. Seconds later, there was a second source of light among you besides the one on the sky, hovering over your shoulder.

Elloy stared at the orb for an uncomfortable number of seconds before a lightbulb set off inside his head. "Ah! Yes, of course! A light to guide our path through the cave! Your wisdom never fails to impress me, good old friend."

As Velkins rubbed a hand against his forehead in irritation, the three of you took your first steps inside the cave.

As you stepped inside the cave, the light from the sun gradually faded until only the focused glow of your spell made you any more distinguishable from the rocks growing inside. As you descended, the openings became narrower until you were marching in a line through the tunnels.

After several minutes of walking, you finally reached an opening to the passage, which led into a large underground chamber. "Aha! We must've hit the motherload!" Said Elloy, as he stepped into the underground chamber. Quickly, you and Velkins tried to grab him so he could slow down-

When Elloy stepped into a particularly large puddle of water, and the splash echoed from every wall of the chamber.

Immediately after, a myriad of screeches followed Elloy's mishappening. From what little light was allowed into the chamber, you could see the shuffling of several woken bats, most of them the size of your average insect-eater.

However, upon spotting unmistakeably larger shadows, you passed your catalyst to your other hand, while withdrawing your short sword. Elloy withdrew his own longer blade, as Velkins prepared his crossbow.

After seconds of nothing but the cries of bats in the background, you suddenly turned your head when Elloy let out a yell, and started fending off several shadows that had dived down towards him.

At that moment, a giant bat went right for your face, appearing without warning from the shadows your orb of light could not reach.

You moved to cast Protection, but the winged bat suddenly changed course and aimed for your hand the moment light began to exhude from it. Upon feeling its talons claw at your sleeves, you reflexively drew back, but in the process knocked the catalyst away from you. You gulped down a groan of irritation when the bat drew back for another pass.

Gripping your sword as the bat the size of your torzo charged towards you again, you swung the weapon at it with dexterity, but it flew from its path while it was screeching, its talons scratching at your shoulder and tearing the robes. Had they not been reinforced, your shoulder would've been wounded.

In the meantime, you heard the screams of Elloy as he tried fending off the ones assaulting him. From the sounds of it, he wasn't faring too well either.

Pausing, you looked down as you heard something you stepped on snap. Picking up the thing, you looked at the dead body of one of the giant bats. A crossbow bolt was sticking out of its head.

You frowned. Slightly.

You backed away from the bat as it made swipes at you, swinging with your sword to keep him at bay. Meanwhile, you looked down for your catalyst, attempting to catch a glimpse of its bright silver. However, nothing appeared at first glance.

A victorious cry from Elloy distracted you, just as you heard another screech, and not from the first annoyance in your path either. You jumped back in reflex, but the bat's talons still got your arm, scratching through the cloth and even scraping at the skin, drawing red blood from the small injury.

Attracted by the smell of blood, you watched in horror as a third bat descended to focus its attention on you- when a sudden bolt flew and grazed the third bat's hide, drawing its screeching shape elsewhere.

Regardless, you now had two giant, bloodthirsty bats to deal with.

Finally, your collected visage cracked. You were being made a fool of by a pathetic mockery of a vampire, all because you were focusing too much in your catalyst.

Taking a deep breath, you waited until the bats screeched, then the moment they stopped their cries, you thrusted your sword at the first one to make a pass. It went through cleanly, impaling it all the way. Kicking it off, you levelled your bloodstained sword at the second. It swirled in the air, trying to go for your back, but you stepped back a little and moved towards where you heard a screech. The moment it stopped, you swung your sword again, and lopped the bat's head off in a clean swipe.

The sound of two other thuds made you look back, and you saw Elloy and Velkins approach you with similarly bloodstained garb. You approached Elloy and smacked him on the head, and promptly berated him for heading off on his own. After he apologized profusely, you went around the chamber for several minutes until you found your catalyst, then cast two more Orbs of Light, binding them to your companions.

"Let's split up and explore this chamber. If anything pops up, scream. It's not big enough that we won't be able to reach each other, and the sounds will echo so we'll not be unable to hear." Nodding at you, Elloy went off to explore, but Velkins threw you a mortified glance.

"He won't get into trouble if he doesn't drag somebody else with him. Trust me."

...

Minutes later, you heard Elloy scream out.

(cont'd.)
>>
>neither of the female characters are wearing pants

>>
>>22740546
God damn it. Run towards the scream.
>>
>>22740546
Exasperated, you went to see what the problem was (this time casting Protection beforehand), but instead of some unspeakable horror, you only saw Elloy waving his blade around excitedly.

"Miles, it's treasure! Treasure!" You approached Elloy with confusion, but when you followed what he was pointing at- You froze. The indistinguishable gleam of silver and gold coins twinkled from a corpse resting on one of the walls of the chamber.

"He must've been the victim of those gods-damned bats." Velkins pointed out, and you felt inclined to agree on the danger the bats posed. A lone adventurer would've suffered such a fate, without a doubt.

"What are we waiting for, let's go!" Elloy made his way towards the corpse, stepping forwards without a care. You closed your eyes, bracing for the sound of a demon to come crashing from another plane...

...Nothing happened. Elloy crouched down, and began to take the plentiful silver and gold coins inside the corpse's pouch.

After a minute of nothing happening while Elloy continued to pour the coins into his own bag, you and Velkins decided to help him out with that.

...

"Alright, that should be all! Should we also take his armor?" You frowned at your friend. You certainly didn't want to strip a rotting corpse naked, and then have to carry his putrid armor around. "Right, right, got it." Elloy waved his hands dismissively.

"Alright, let's head back. There's nothing else in this chamber, and I don't really feel like exploring the rest of this shithole." Velkins spouted, his hard leather armour already getting heavy due to the ankle-deep water you were standing in.

"Yeah-" Wait, ankle-deep? If you remembered correctly, it barely went up to your soles when you entered the chamber. "...Shit."

You looked at the floor, and noticed the sudden difference in floor height between the rest of the chamber and where you stood on.
>>
Now you could hear the faint cracking that had always been there, but you had never noticed at all, too busy stuffing coins into your pouch.

That was when the ground collapsed under your feet, before you could even react. You fell, the hollow ground you had been standing on leading to a dark tunnel that slid you deeper and deeper into the abyss. One of the stray rocks that broke off the collapsing ground struck you in the head, and immediately after darkness clouded your mind.

...

You woke up, your head ringing from the pain. Focusing until you regained your sight, you stared at your surroundings, not forgetting to cast Orb of Light (you still had all your belongings with you, thank the gods). You looked at the tunnel where you had come from, and immediately judged you wouldn't be able to get out that way, even if you used a spell to not slip.

However, upon further exploration of the room, you noticed there was something else. A dark passageway lit with torches, that led further inside. With no other choice, you followed it.

...

When you reached the end, you discovered you were at another chamber. You recognized another tunnel similar to the one you had fallen through. That probably meant this is where your companions had ended up falling in.

You decided to explore this larger hallway, motioning the orb to light your way...

You froze. You yelled out.

Before you was Velkins- Or what was left of him. A huge gash was torn into his side, and he seemed to be bleeding out badly. The crossbowman stirred at your yell, and cracked one eye open to look at you.

"I... It's you... sh-shit... everything's... gone... to hell..."

Assuming we don't have a healing skill, take one of the torches from the wall. Get your sword and heat up the blade with the torch, and use the flat edge of it to cauterize the wound and prevent bleeding out. Not sure if it'll work or not, but it's better than just leaving the guy to die.
>>
>>22741168
"...What... got... me...?" The man gasps out, clutching at his bleeding wound. "...I... don't know... it was... some giant... fat... fuck... gah...!" He wheezes out the response, his grieving wound taking the best of him.

"Shut up for a second, that looks terrible." You kneel down, and frown. You're not specialized in healing (magical or mundane), but you're damn sure going to try.

"...but-" You zip his mouth, and address the wound. It looks horrible, and by the looks of it, was done by either fangs or claws. Thankfully it didn't scratch any organs, but you're pretty sure you can see bone.

"...This is going to hurt." You step back from Velkins, and move to one of the walls, plucking out one of the torches. Taking out your blade, you heat it up, and approach the crossbowman, who just stares.

"Lift up your hand." Aware that he's in a life-or-death situation, he displays the wound in all of its glory. You wait for your sword to cool down a bit, then press the steaming flat edge of your blade against it as gently as possible. Immediately, he lets out a silent yell, eyes widening in pain. You give him one of your torn sleeves for him to bite down on, which he does without abandon.

When you prod the blade away, all that is left is a charred black-and-red scar that, while certainly terrible, is at least not bleeding.

"...thanks..." Velkins gasps out after falling into reality from his pain-induced delusion. Seconds later, his eyes widen. "...Shit! I... forgot to tell you...!"

You realized, then. There was somebody missing. "Where's Elloy!?" You grab at his shoulders, shaking him.

"...gah! H-He's... ahead... fighting the... monster...!" Immediately as he says this, you release your grip on him, pick up your sword, and sprint down the torched hallway, hoping to save your long-time friend before it's too late.

You run several dozens of meters, until you start to hear the echoes of thuds and crashes. Not to be caught off guard this time, you cast Protection on your off-hand, holding your catalyst and sword at the ready. The sounds grow louder as the light at the end of the tunnel grows brighter.

It does not take long for you to make the distance, and exit out into a massive chamber, as big as the one from above. You look down when you step on something soft, and stare down the mauled body of a long-dead adventurer. "...Crap!"

Raising your head to review the rest of the chamber in a split second, you notice several more corpses strewn around with their valuables, silver and gold coins scattered about. The walls are a mix of bricks and stone, with the presence of civilization in lieu of the torches. However, that all turns to moot when you hear another strenduous crash, and snap your head towards that direction.

From behind a pile of corpses, Elloy steps away, leaping back like a bat out of hell. You noticed he was ignoring his buckler, not bothering to hold it up. Seconds after, you realized why.

The pile of corpses collapsed as something stomped past its side, not bothering to evade the mountain of flesh. It walked on fat, stubby legs, whose dull red scales meshed in with the dried blood of the dead. Powerful claws dug into the rock floor, carving small holes on it. Two demonic-looking eyes flared from a huge draconic head, nostrils spewing ash and embers as its fangs contorted in a monstruous sneer. Two small wings on its upper back flapped with each step, apparently useless. A long, scaled tail swished left and right from the end of the monster's length, menacingly knocking everything in the room it touched away.

The monster- no... Dragon, paused, looking at the faraway Elloy, then letting out a deafening roar that clawed at your ears and made your heart skip a beat in fear, started sprinting towards the adventurer, lifting clouds of dust and shaking the earth with every step.

Elloy looked at his situation, and noticed he had very little dodging room, stuck between two piles of corpses. Its tail might very well get him if you don't do something.
