Howdy there anon. Let's have a good thread, shall we? This is tanks '89.

“BUT YOU CAN'T DO THAT!” Princess-Lieutenant Fatima Tahira shouts as she slams her fist into your desk. Unlike General Garrison's desk, which is a work of art, yours is a shoddy particle board secondhand office desk that Anderson managed to score for you.

You sigh and pinch the bridge of your nose. You've been over this multiple times with not only the pe-ell, who refuses to respect any part of your mission, but also her officers. They were quick to blame their equipment and junior enlisted to avoid any repercussions, and were more than happy to display their lack of training.

'Her Royal Highness', currently shouting in your face after your company completely wiped out hers in a simulated engagement and suffering only one mobility casualty, slams her fist into your desk again. Your bottle of water falls on its side and rolls ever so slowly towards the bowed center. If this keeps up, she'll be getting you a new desk too.

“Ms. Tahira, your entire company rolled directly into a killbox in textbook road formation. After my witches and infantry killed your lead and rear vehicles, your men panicked and died. Where were their officers to put their heads back on your men's shoulders? Where were your senior NCO's to provide guidance and direct fire? Most importantly, where the hell were you?” You ask, leaning back in your chair.

A knock at your door seems to give you some respite.

At this point, you're just happy someone is possibly about to bail you out of this vicious cycle. Not willing to shuffle past PL Tahira, you don't bother checking the door. For all you know, this could be some Saudi pizza man. If only fate were so kind.

“Get in here!” you shout through the door after holding up a finger to pause pe-ell's raving.

Master Sargent Christina Rockfield steps through the door, a manilla folder under her arm. “Uhm. You're not busy, are you sir?”

“Why, not at all. Besides, even if I were, I value the input of my most senior enlisted witch. Unlike some people.” You say, eyeballing Tahira. She huffs and crosses her arms.

“Oh, good. Here's the company and individual vehicle AARs. I think Lieutenant Anderson's is in here too. Just need you to sign them and I can have them pushed up to Garrison today.” She says, completely ignoring the 'royalty' in the room. She steps past Tahira, setting the folder on your desk. How she manages to smell this good in the desert is completely beyond you. Probably sparkly shit.

“You um, you need anything sir?” She asks before she leaves, lingering at the door.

“Actually top, if you want to hang around that'd be appreciated” you say, turning your attention back to Tahira. Rockfield nods and steps to the side of the room, just in view of both of you.

“Well pe-ell? Where were you while the American aggressors were whipping the shit out of the first royal Saudi house guards? I didn't see your strikers running around anywhere, and from the TO you gave me yourself, you're the only witch in your unit.” You ask, placing your hands on your desk.

Tahira rolls her eyes. “I don't understand Captain, what's the big deal? They're just practice, not the real thing. Besides, I had a dinner to be at for one of my sisters. That's more important than your silly training exercises.”

You don't know why you expected her to say something else, but you did. And thus, her answer baffles you. Granted, she's not very old, and she's been put in command of an armored company, which you know firsthand can be a bitch if you're not ready for it. But at the same time, how could anyone be anywhere near this irresponsible with the lives that they're charged with?

“Actually sir, if I could field this one?” Rockfield asks. The look of terror on Tahira's face is utterly priceless. A SNCO giving advice to an officer? Jesus Christ, how horrifying.

>[] “Go for it! She's just ignoring everything I say anyway.”

“Shoot, top. She's just ignoring me, a lowly Captain with years of command experience. If she's got a brain rattling around in her royal skull, which at this point I’m not convinced, she'll listen to you.” You say, waiting for the inevitable ass chewing on the way.

Rockfield just smiles. “Miss Tahira, I would like to be the first to congratulate you on getting almost every single member of your company killed and costing the RSLF millions of dollars in damage to replace that gear. It must be hard knowing that those men died so that you could go have some delicacy, in your clean palace, with your servants buzzing about you. The first Royal house guards were slaughtered mercilessly by the enemy, and you ate your fill. Undoubtedly, while the 1ARSOF was eating mama Arabia’s babies alive, you were filling your gullet with expensive wine or champagne, and laughing with your friends and sisters.”

She takes a step closer to Tahira, squaring up against the Saudi witch. Rockfield is shorter by a large margin, four or five inches, but she's got quite a bit more muscle on her frame. Tahira is, by comparison, long just about everywhere it matters. You fight to bring your focus back to what your master sergeant is saying.

“If I were you, your highness, I'd reach into my ass with both hands and pull my head out, because your stomach ain't made of glass. The good Lord didn't put those men on this earth, under your command, just so you could throw them away. He put them there so that you could go somewhere and defend your home and family from people who want very much to kill everything with the name of Saud, and take this land for their own. What would've happened if that was us? Aren't the house units of the RSLF supposed to be elite? Your men simulated a mobility kill on us. That's it. We killed every single one of you, save one, and you shot the treads off a single Abrams. That's a fifteen minute fix. Killing your entire company cost us twenty minutes.”

Tahira just looks at you, her jaw firmly open. She wants you to save her, but for some reason you really don't want to.

"Do you understand 'Princess'. You are your company's Witch, they rely on you and you abandoned them. You left them to rot so you could have a fancy dinner.

It's 'just practice'? If you don't practice and prepare for war every single man under your command is going to die and it will be your fault. When they die the enemy will be free to kill those who you are supposed to protect.

Now, are you going to keep on whinging about practice or are you going to take responsibility?"

[x] "This 'just practice', as you put it, was requested because the we at NATO are the masters of warfare. Your House Units, your so-called elite, could only get a single mobility kill? This is the best that the Saudi military can provide? Practice or not, the fact that you couldn't kill a single soldier means that you are woefully inadequate for the responsibility of defense. It is becoming quickly apparent that the RSLF is nothing but talk, and has no real bite to it."

I'd throw in something about "At least the Imperial Japanese house units live up to their pedigree." but I'm not sure just how elite the IJA units are.

You wave Rockfield off. She stops, keeping her eyes directly on Tahira. She tries to say something about letting enlisted talk to an officer like that, but you cut her off.

“I hope you understand what I've been trying to say, pe-ell. I hope you can respect what this task force is here to do. We might not be the aggressors, we might not be here to kill every Saud and drink the oil with bendy straws, but there will come a time where there are people who want to do just that. Hell, there are people not but a scant three hundred miles who fit the bill.

“You are that company's commanding officer. You abandoned them. What don't you understand? You just go ahead and let me know how clear I have to make myself to you. You left your men in the cold so you could have some bullshit fancy dinner. The politics, the discussions, they'll break down, and your men will be the last, LAST line of defense for the Saudi people. When you leave them on the field for a piece of cake, the enemy will be free to kill those you are charged with protecting.

“Nobody ever said you have to like it. I'm sure if you want to, there's an option for you to resign your commission. But if you don't, then you'd better grab the reigns and take responsibility. We fight bloody practices so that we can fight bloodless wars.”

You're standing up now, both hands firmly planted on your desk. Tahira, her eyes blazing, squares off with you. Tears, you think, mixed with incredible displeasure.

“I hope you understand what just happened, Miss Tahira. Go away.” You say. She sharply about-faces and heads out your office door. It doesn't slam, unlike when she entered.

“Cap,” Rockfield starts “do you think we were too hard on her? Maybe we could've cleaned it up a bit...” She trails off, playing with one of the buttons on her camo top.

“Absolutely not, top. She deserved every word just now. She's not a kid anymore, she needs to stop acting like one. I just hope that we cleared it up for her.” You reply, flipping through the AARs. They all basically said the same thing, paraphrased to 'we were inna desert, some Saudis came, we fucked their shit up, we're still inna desert.'

“I know that if someone chewed my ass like that, especially now that I'm with a combat unit, I'd straighten out, sir. The drill instructors at the academy did that, kinda. They'd get on you about something and just hound you for it until you had it perfect. It was either that, or they'd have these little talks with you, and just try to break you down as a person. When they did that, you were just wishing they'd scream at you, because those little talks are so much worse.”

You're not unfamiliar with the concept. Your instructors at OCS weren't as nice, when they were breaking you down, they'd be doing it while screaming at you. You chuckle.

You finish signing off your company's after action reports, close the folder, and lean back in your chair.

“Y'know top, I can't help but feel like I don't know a damn thing about you. I mean, you get punched into my unit in Germany a few weeks ago, we get in the shit a whopping once, and now we're out in the middle of damned nowhere. What'd you do before you joined up?”

Rockfield looks a little taken aback. She smiles sheepishly, before asking “You're not flirting with me, are you captain?”

“Of course not! How effective of a unit can we be if the CO doesn't know his SNCO incredibly well?” You reply, smiling a little yourself. You haven't NOT thought of it, even though you know it'd be wholly inappropriate. Plus, Nicky would be crushed.

She laughs and sits in one of the folding chairs in front of your desk.

“Not a whole lot for me to have done, sir, I'm only twenty. Once I got out of high school, my dad put me straight into the academy. I wanted to fly for the Navy, but the magic just wasn't there. You shake your head and laugh. “Oh, I see. You just 'took' tanks, like they're not the most awesome thing on the planet. Sure, just like I just 'took' being an Oregon running back. Say what you will about Frank and flying, I'm convinced he just flies because that's the only place I can't run him over. Give it time, I'll get some wings and go up there and harass the shit out of him anyway. Just 'took' tanks, suuuure. Like driving a house sized block of motorized steel with a gun the size of 'fuck you' and shitting all over someone when they look at you funny isn't awesome.”

Rockfield laughs and stands up. “Absolutely, sir. Tanks were always my second choice. It was either be a carrier witch, or be in tanks. Couldn't bring myself to fly for the Air Force. Anyhow, I've gotta go check on the girls. Patterson's still on that wonky striker motor, Rosalez was guts deep in her ma deuce with a sand brush and complaints, and Ooishi was wrapping her rifle in burlap.” She shrugs and shakes her head “Snipers, sir. They're all whacked.”

You can't help but agree, and follow your master sergeant out the door. The pile of tankers on the other side of the door look up at you, all trying to shuffle away at the same time. Nicky just whistles as he walks down the hallway, hands in his pockets.

“Oh come on boys. You could at least put a mic in my office, we're down to piling up around the door? How the mighty have fallen.” You say, remembering that tankers are the masters of pranking one another.

>what do, captain?

Stepping through, on, and over the pile of writing tankers, you make your way to Nicky, who doesn't seem to notice you plowing though the group. He jumps a little when you get right behind him and nearly shout “SO, NICKY. WHATCHA GOT TO DO TODAY?”

He rips his hands out of his pockets and spins to face you. “Uh. Not a lot, sir. I was just headed to see you, but I saw your door was closed and didn't want to bother you.”

“Oh? And what did you have for me, little nicky?” You ask, throwing an arm around his shoulder and grinning. You've got him dead to rights and he knows it.

“Um. Nintendo's free, sir. Thought you'd want to know.”

“Oh, why, how helpful of you. I think my ghosts n' goblins can wait though. Don't you have something to do?” You ask, walking down the hallway, past the rec room. Nicky looks in, longing for a rescue effort from someone. Anderson is far too enamored with Zelda to pay attention to the young gunner's nonvocal cries for help.

“Do we have striker techs yet?” you ask, making your way towards the stairwell.

“Um, no sir?”

“Well, it's been a few days. Guess what you get to go hunt down!” You say, opening the door and slapping his armor into his arms.

“Aw shit, really sir?”

You just grin.

Though that may be her problem (aside from the enormous anal tree), going by that document from last time, her troops' problem is going to need lots of instructional courses, orders for the officers to dissemenate information and not hoard it, and to beat their paranoid politics over the head with a big stick until it stops causing problems.

Which is probably impossible, but I can dream.

>>
>>22688626
no but its a start, a start that would be helped by getting her entirely new troops, who've never even heard of politics, that we can build from the ground up while she learns to command, from the ground up
>>
>>22688626
If we can just change the way her company works that would be enough for us.
>>
>>22688605
I'm still reading through it, but it is very enlightening.

It does bring up an interesting question though. If during a training exercise the RSLF were to be tasked as an ambusher/guerrilla force, told to operate in extremely small groups of 10 or less, could they do better?
>>
>>22688733
That might work. Though if coordination between the different groups was required we might end up right back where we started.
>>
If Mouse takes that article as background information, would we run into political blocks when we try to unfuck the Arab army?

The politicians want the army to remain fucked so that they don't pull a coup.
>>
>>22688716
The problem isn't that it's just the military training, its their entire society and culture. Getting another batch of fresh troops won't do anything because the problem is endemic to their society, not just their military sub-culture.

What has to be done is to ask them what they want out of this training, and what they are willing to give up for it.
If they want to be able to operate their vehicles in a cohesive manner and take full advantage of the advanced technology they've bought, then they need to give up who they are, turn their backs on everything that they've learned, and essentially become NATO soldiers.

>>22688771
>Though if coordination between the different groups was required
I was thinking that, even without coordination, that if they just have small units of a couple enlisted with a single NCO or officer leading them like some kind of nomadic warband, they'll still all get slaughtered but they might actually kill a NATO soldier or two during the training exercise, in contrast to the complete fiasco they had. I mean, come one. 20 minutes without a single enemy kill? What were they doing, re-enacting a Scooby Doo episode of running around doing nothing?
>>
>>22688730

We could try to break those bad habits and instill some esprit de' corps, I guess.

>>
>>22689197
Oh no, you weren't too harsh on them, it's just that their fuckup was getting INTO that situation in the first place.
>>
>>22689197
If there's a type of warfare that Arabs specialize in, it's insurgency.
>>
>>22689238

I wonder... I get the feeling the exercise was a mission to simulate how the Arabs would respond when ambushed.

Which makes the implication even worse, that they knew they would probably come under attack and still manage to fuck it up completely.
>>
>>22689238
So, not so much Scooby-Doo, as Looney Tunes.

>>22689239
Well yeah, but insurgency isn't a very good type of fighting if you want to prevent casualties among your own civilians.
I wonder if we can bring that up with the princess and the top officers of the company.
"So, you're good at guerrilla warfare. That's nice, and the NVA and the Mujahideen showed that it can be very effective against a professional military like ours. But it also means that all of your families come under our guns, since it only works when the invaders have already invaded and are crushing your homes and families under tanks and bombers.
"If you want to stop invaders AT your borders, instead of INSIDE them, you have to learn to fight like us."

“Take Hans with you, and don't come back with a shitload of candy, got me?” You say, pushing Nicky out the door, who just groans.

Out in the fresh air, you find that your billet has become a buzz of activity. Your tankers are constantly going over their equipment, checking and rechecking that the systems and delicate machinery are still in working order. So far, everything seems to be working the way it's supposed to, save for the known striker issues.

You find Patterson sitting in front of her striker unit, staring at it intently, chin resting in her hand. Beside her, Ooishi is either maintaining, or modifying her M40. You can't tell which it is. Facing the other way and just behind the two of them, Rosalez has her .50 caliber M2 apart on her poncho liner, carefully going through everything with a fine tipped brush. A bottle of LSA lubricant sits next to her, it's cap tightly closed.

“Hey there girls, what's up?” You ask, tightening the straps on your plate carrier.

“Not a whole lot, sir. Doing some regular maintaining stuff. Mary's still bummed over her striker though.” Ooishi replies, not taking her eyes off Muramasa. It's barrel and furniture have been wrapped loosely with burlap strips, probably torn from a potato sack bought from the local market.

>>

Things is when the get back, unless they are kept together in a single unit, they will be dispersed in ones and twos everywhere and the things they try to implement will be countered and overruled by those who still think of limiting information and amassing power.

>>22689820
You're right, but it's still a step in the right direction. Someone high up trained this way might be able to work through some changes under the radar.

>>22689857
Okay. But we are going to try to change them with two methods. First is by giving them superiors they can trust and who actually try to teach them. The second is by letting them see how disfunctional their culture is to a military. They get experience with a different way of operating, and when they get back, they choose. You wouldn't really want to erase their customs and beliefs, because they'll have to deal with those when they return home. Rather, you want someone who can operate in both worlds.
>>
>>22689880
Scorched earth tactics would say otherwise. That jungle can disappear given enough fire.

You look down at your recon witch, who's humming the Marine Corps hymn in time with her tearing of the burlap. Her rifle is almost entirely covered, with incisions to allow her to adjust the scopes optics. In fact, the only parts that are left exposed are the trigger, barrel ending, and scope lens. Otherwise, almost the whole rifle is buried under burlap.

“Um, Sushi, whatcha doin'?” You ask, leaning up against the nearest tank, which just so happens to be the booze hound. Despite killing seven Saudi tanks, Nicky hasn't painted any new markers on. Probably just because it was a simulated exercise, not the real thing.

“Camouflage, sir. Can't recon anything if I get found out!” She says cheerily, carefully taping down a section before pulling another strip over the tape. “Burlap is light, effective, cheap, and readily available in almost all parts of the world.” She looks up and smiles.

Behind her, Rosalez giggles. “It's almost too bad I can't put burlap all over Mama Deuce here. A fifty caliber witch ambush. Someone would have a bad day!” she says, sliding the bolt group around in it's tray.

Patterson, on the other hand, just sighs, clearly distraught over her striker.

When you're on the way out, let everyone know that I just cut my hair into a mohawk. That's all you have to say to them.” You say, grinning maliciously.

“Rosalez, go into the courtyard and tell Rockfield that everyone needs to line up, single file, left to right.” Rosalez quickly places the parts to her ma deuce in the center of her poncho liner, then carefully wraps it to protect it from sand. Afterwords, she jumps up and runs to the center of the courtyard, grabbing Rockfield as she exits the building.

Patterson looks left and right, before realizing that you're the only two there. She puts her hands up and begins to back away. “Captain, I've heard about this. I heard from top and Ooishi what you did to that German witch when she needed cheering up. Please, I'm a lot smaller than her! I'm delicate! I bruise!” She says, looking for ways out. Unfortunately for her, the Booze Hound and her own strikers were boxing her in.

“I was juuuust kidding, Mary. This was just a little demonstration as to how you never know when it's gonna happen. Football attacks are spontaneous. You should always be ready.” You say to her over your shoulder. Then she drops her shoulders and subsequently, her guard.

You spin on the balls of your feet, drop your shoulders, and slam your arms shut around her waist. The young witch was able to brace herself at the last second, so you don't end up knocking the air out of her, but she's still surprised. You throw her over a shoulder and whip back around, making your best speed for the courtyard. [x] “Irresponsible? Not at all! Keeping morale up!”

I mean here we are in a sandy hellhole, sand messing things up, Striker techs no where in sight, etc. And what for? for something that'd end up posturing more than doing any good in regards to WWIII.

A little extra morale building is needed.

Okay, My bet on what's going on:

Politics happened, and Pissed-off princess from a culture that wallows in the worst kind of it made it happen.

She probably field some vaguely-worded complaint to garrisson to punish us from having the temerity to tell her what-for, and to let the enlisted do it to.

So yeah. We should probably take this seriously, until we can confirm it's not serious shit.

>[] “Irresponsible? Not at all! Keeping morale up!”

You smile to try to ward the guilt away. “Aw hell sir. Just keeping morale up, little bit of sports PT I thought would help.”

He just shakes his head. “I can't really get on your ass for that. Just maybe next time you do it, make sure we don't have a meeting over the training you're doing. Shall we head inside?” He asks, already starting towards your building's door. You sigh, once again robbed from your beloved sport.

“You know, that princess-Lieutenant whatever whatever title she has came by my office and gave me an earful about you.” General garrison starts “Wanted me to come by and chew on your ass for it. What'd she do?” he asks, closing the door to your office.

You quickly explain what she had done, offering the general a bottle of water. He takes it, twisting the cap off and hammering down about half. After hearing the whole story, he just shakes his head.

“Can't say I much care for that. How in the hell are you supposed to run a war from a palace?” he shakes his head and pinches the bridge of his nose. “Goddamned Saudis. Goddamned politics. I never said this, captain, but this whole thing is stupid.”

“If that's how you feel about it, sir, then I never said I agree.”

Garrison merely grunts.

2/2

A few minutes later, after discussing your training plans, Nicky and Hans return with their own news. It had been several days since your talk with the general about your striker techs. Unfortunately, they still weren't there.

“Sir, this is starting to be a major problem. That whole um...display that you saw just now, was because we don't have striker techs. I'm running out of options here, I've got a witch that can't train and can't fight, and is starting to be a morale issue.” You say.

He grunts again. “Captain, I can say in full confidence that you have the best rec room and cleanest billet out of the entire task force. How is morale an issue?”

>Oh shit. Wat say?
>>
>>22691425
So, are we gonna start with the bitch who ratted us out? I'd say that a live 120mm tank round "accidentally" fired at her during a training exercise will solve that problem.
>>
>>22691458
Smile. "You know that Princess that came to you? We have to deal with that bitch on a daily basis."
>>
>>22691458
Strykers aren't up to standared due to lack of stryker techs, stryker corp feels higher is ambivilant to their needs. That saps the morale of any unit no matter how nice the rec room or the billet is.

>>
>>22691458

>>
>>22691463

>>
>>22691491
Striker, not Stryker.
Strikers are the funny things Witches wear instead of pants. Strykers are an armored vehicle that hasn't been invented yet.
>>
>>22691458
Look outside for a moment then look back to him. "Sir, we're in a stinking desert, we've got no striker techs so our Witches feel useless which makes everyone antsy, all of us have to try to teach a massive pile of idiots, and apparently a Princess has decided that I'm personally responsible for her men being incompetent.

Also, I like football and we all needed to get some exercise and movement in."
>>
>>22691463
Oh, good, and how are you going to explain letting a live round get mixed into the blanks of a training exercise that we're responsible for? Our career is going to be in the toilet for that.

>>22691458
"Sir, having the best rec room and clean billet isn't enough to counteract feeling useless. If it was just us tankers, I might be able to do something even if we didn't have our vehicles, but I've got no experience training Witches, and without her Striker, I have no way to utilize them."

Yeah, and so does the FFL and the British Marine Commando, and they're not having a problem, or if they are, they're able to keep it from going up to Garrison.
We're the only ones who apparently can't handle their assigned Saudi problem.
>>
>>22691458

"Yes sir, they're great but my girls are increasingly under pressure without the techs. They're unable to effect major repairs to the strikers without their qualifications being stripped. Without their strikers, my girls are relegated to a support role and the guilt of not pulling their weight is getting to them, and I'm getting this from my SNCO so it won't be long before it permeates to the rest of the girls."
>>
>>22691458

Actually, yes, they would have. You can argue that at our court martial, but I doubt it would be effective.

>>22691602
Or, they're more experienced at training Arab units and therefore are having more success than we are.
With the FFL, it's even possible that they've got an Arab or two who can explain the cultural shortcomings of the Saudi's to their CO and are therefore better able to get results.

The Saudis could bitch and moan all they want, we're not gonna gonna get handed over, and it's highly unlikely we'd be court-martialed for it.

“Sir, no amount of nintendo, shitty Saudi TV, AFARTS brodcasts, and games of pool can override the feeling of uselessness. That's what she's going through, and we're going to do anything we can to help.” You say, looking the man in the eyes. He may be your superior, but he can't micromanage you.

“Fine, captain, fine. I'll give you the number to Colonel Torrey, and YOU can yell at him to get your striker techs here. Just be sure you don't let him find out that he ranks you.” He replies, looking over your training schedule.

You sigh, and go over it with him. Mere seconds later, Anderson knocks, a fresh newspaper in his hand. “Thought you two would like to see this.”

The headline is some useless political prattle, all of course looking for ways to make peace. The president of the United States and the premier of the USSR were constantly using cats paws and diversions to attack one another, trying to draw attention away from the real issue at hand: The Oder-Neisse. The 19th armored guards regiment had just wound up and punched back into the NATO line, pushing it back into Berlin. The line, however, remained unbroken.

Nearer to you, on the other hand, was more of the same. The Iraqis were rattling their sabers over accused Saudi slant-drilling, something every Saudi oil company was denying vehemently. Rumors of tiny border clashes between the Iraqi republican guard and the Saudi national guard were frequent, something the paper mentioned more than once.
>>
>>22691778
>I suspect the princess has other concerns.

Instead, I'm waiting for a man with a crappy moustache to attack the desert. Maybe I'll write him a letter and say the sand insulted his mother.” You say. Maybe if you and the Booze Hound had been around, they wouldn't have pushed so hard.

“It's over now, though, captain, and the reds are going to keep pushing. You need to get Europe out of your mind and focus on the task at hand. If the Iraqis do something stupid, 1 ARSOF will be the first unit off the leash, that I can guarantee. You need to calm the hell down and act like an officer.” He replies, looking up.

“That's enough distractions, second lieutenant Anderson. Post a sentry at the door, we are not to be bothered until future notice.” He says very seriously.

You spend a few hours going over your training schedule, placing emphasis on simple marksmanship, command and execution, and fire and maneuver tactics. Unfortunately, you had very little time to organize the whole thing. Tomorrow starts your actual training of the 1st Royal House Guards and Princess-Lieutenant Fatima Tahira, something you can't honestly say you're looking forward to.

While the essay was written in 1999, could it have been written earlier in our timeline because most of the books cited are actually from before 1989?

>>
>>22691912
Just for my own curiosity:
German Armed Forces: Wermacht or Bundeswehr?
>>
>>22691943
Nukes are reserved as anti-Martian weaponry only, and IIRC, are kept in one central facility in Russia controlled by the UN.
>>
>>22691943

>>

Ballistic missiles, or just gravity bombs?
>>
>>22691954
and russia is working with the martians, atleast in part, which moron thought this was a good idea
>>
>>22691943
Actually, as I recall, this came up in the Strike Witches '89 threads.

Nukes are, by worldwide treaty, limited only to anti-space weapons. They're all designed to be used against Martians or any other space invaders, and are under UN control. There's the Megalith superweapon that protects Russia and the Chandelier which protects North America.

Actually, Mouse, how much power does the UN have in this setting?
Is it only concerned with inter-planetary threats and so distances itself from international conflicts? It must have some real clout since it controls all of the nukes on the planet, and the possibility of a Martian invasion is a real one.
>>
>>22691983
Also Stonehenge protects Europe.
>>
>>22691977
Actually, it's more than likely those are seized/given over Postwar. If those were actual new Martian ships, Frank would have reacted with more than just bemused surprise at their appearance.
>>
>>22691943

It has, actually. Copy and pasted directly from Ghostdivision's thread:

So-called superweapons are mostly devices designed so that another invasion along the lines of the ones in the 40s can be effectively opposed before they gain a landhold.

This includes nukes, which fall under UNEDF jurisdiction.

>>22691947

Wermacht. Technically, Germany has reverted to the Weimar Constitution. The NSDAP is outlawed and banned due to high treason.

>>22691983

Define power?
Are we talking conventional?
>>
>>22691977
>russia is working with the martians
If you're talking about the Martian dreadnoughts that appeared in Alaska, those were captured dreadnoughts from the Alien War that the Russians restored. And the Martians were most likely POW's that were pressed into service to operate the dreadnoughts.

Political clout, the ability to tell the militaries of member-states what to do.
Like, can the UNEDF operate completely unmolested even in a warzone between member-states?
Is the development of nuclear weapons banned or encouraged, since more nukes means more weapons for planetary defense?
If a nation develops nukes but refuses to turn them over to the UN, does the UN bring down the hammer on the offending nation?
>>
>>22692028
Why would they? In the SWQ verse, the holocaust never happened.
>>
>>22692044
Well, not for the Holocaust since the Final Solution didn't get off the ground very much, but for their actions of disrupting the unified human war effort during the height of the Alien War.
>>
>>22692009
question relating to how we handle training the bumblefucks we have been assigned, what gear/vees do they have, main armaments and capabilities of the offensive weapons, what sort of ammo loadouts do they have etc, if we are to instill some trust in their equipment, rather than simply bullshit-politics their way out of a situation, would be good to know these things, so we can teach them how to use their gear effectively
>>
>>22692044

Yes, the camps were running, but apparently not at the scale that they were at the equivalent time in our timeline.
I remember it was mentioned in one of the SWQ threads, Planefag said that the camps were set up, and were operating, but couldn't get up to the sheer numbers that they did in our world because of the Witches, most of which opposed the idea and which caused Hitler to expel them from Berlin.
>>
>>22692113
also, whats the likelihood of Russia giving Iraq a bunch of 80's, with them going and starting WW3 its not all that inconceivable and would mean we might need to change our training plans for the natives
>>
>>22692039

Assuming they had legitimate reason, yes. Another invasion, like in 1941 would be considered legitimate reason, or if one of the big four superweapons was being threatened by the war. Otherwise, no. they could act in self-defense, but usually they'd just leave the area.

The rest of the UN is about on par with real-world. UN peacekeeping missions are separate from the EDF, and usually have about the same success rate in their missions.

the UN can bring the hammer down on 'rogue' nuclear nations, but so far, that's not been an issue. the threat of facing a massive invasion from the US, Soviet union, and Imperial Japanese among others tends to keep people in line. Plus there's a 'rumor' that the UNEDF is completely allowed to consider non-UN controlled nukes threats worthy of their attention. 'sjust a rumor, but no one's tried to find out if it's true or not
>>
>>22692121
Yeah, it's in planefag's alternate history doc

>On the last day of October 1940, all Jews in occupied Warsaw are moved to the ghettos. German Jewish Witches raise a great hue and cry, prompting Hitler to issue a formal declaration that powerful magical bloodlines are a distinctly Aryan trait, exempting the valuable Witches from persecution. The Witch Corps are only somewhat mollified, and the SS are given orders to closely watch the troublesome Witches until they can be transferred to distant foreign theatres.

>In August of 1941 events that will end in the “Great Cry” begin in Eastern Europe. At the gates to Auschwitz, incoming prisoners are greeted by one man who shouts “Slaughterhouse! Slaughterhouse!” loud enough to be heard near the gates, before he’s shot dead by a guard. Dozens of incoming prisoners with knives concealed on their persons attack the guards; in the ensuing melee hundreds are mowed down by machine-gun fire. One man escapes; a Polish Catholic priest, who manages to escape to the free regions of the Baltic states. He is ignored or disbelieved by most, except for his sister, a Polish Witch fighting with the Polish Air Force in exile.

The account of the Auschwitz escapee, repeated and vouched for by his Witch sister, begins reaching foreign Witches through the ancient communication channels and pre-war friendships. Despite the difficulty of believing such a monstrous tale, the treatment of the German Witch Corps lead some to wonder, and doubts begin to grow.

>Transferring their most modern MBTs from the frontlines to Iraq.

No, I don't think so. They'll be needing all their Class-A units up on the front. The best the Iraqis will probably get will be the second stringer stuff.
>>
>>22692028
Since this is something I'm writing, I'll handle this one.

They got purged hardcore starting on Christmas Day 1942 for high treason. As it turns out, the SS didn't like being on the receiving end of a Night of Long Knives.

Also, while the Nuremberg Trials didn't happen, the Nuremberg Laws got publicly abolished. It made Doenitz' position with the Western Allies much less awkward and strained.
>>
>>22692161
He also mentions IJN atrocities

>In Asia, news of Japanese Army atrocities, especially against women, have yet to reach the Imperial Japanese Navy’s Witches due to the near-complete exodus of Witches from the IJA to the IJN, the ancient historical animosity between Chinese and Japanese Witches, and the internal Republican/Communist infighting occupying the aristocratic Witch-bloodlines of China. Likewise, diplomatic relations between Axis Germany are sparse, if technically extant, and Japanese and Russian Witches share a similar, if lesser historical antagonism.

The SS was purged, beginning on Christmas day, 1942, nominally because they were traitors.

>>22692065

M60A1 tanks as line tanks. It's structured roughly the same as an American tank company. Their gear is a mishmash of late 70's Soviet and Western stuff, none of it is used too hard, and the training manuals are nowhere to be found.

>>22692142

Absolutely zero. They may allow Iraqi factories to license build them, but that's about as far as they'd go.

Listen to this guy, he's really good at remembering important stuff in history. In fact, he's the guy both Ghost and I go to when we have a question.
>>

I never did read that.

Could I get a dl link please?
>>
>>22692171
I can see purging members of the SS who were more loyal to Hitler and the Nazi Party than to Germany, but wouldn't eliminating valuable officers and trained personnel during a time of total war end up crippling a nation like Germany, that doesn't have the pure numbers of Soviet Russia to handle such a purge?
>>
fronk got a super-duper prototype plane and we only got some slightly better than average armor upgrades, I'm starting to wish we got something like the Abrams CATTB instead, completely feasible, was build in the 80's, had better engine (diesel apparently), better quality armor and also featured an autoloader for its experimental 140mm main gun in a larger, better armored turret, pic related is it
>>
>>22692171

>High Treason

What was the reason behind this? What did the SS do?
>>
>>22692214
That's assuming loyality wasn't a more valued asset than ability. That and most of WW2 Germany's noted soldiers were normal German army.
>>
>>22692220
Some of it sounds pretty cool, but I'm iffy on the autoloader. I've never heard anybody say anything good about those.
>>
>>22692226
Tried to continue WW2 while the Martian war was going on.
They hijacked a merchant ship or something, put guns on it, and raided supply lines. They also machinegunned non-SS german soldiers in lifeboats and in the water during those raids.
The treatment was returned when the regular German forces caught up with them.
>>22692244
If we don't have something with legs by the end of the quest I'll be might disappointed.
>>
>>22692244
have enough room in the turret for the crew to operate around it and develop in such a way that the crew can make it a manual loader, or assist in its operation and you will never hear anything but praise about it, also the Leclerc has an autoloader which works perfectly fine
>>
>>22692214
The purges were concentrated on the non-Waffen SS members, and the highest Waffen SS generals. The actual divisions were rolled up into regular Wehrmacht command structure; while they weren't purged, they lost their autonomy.

>>22692226
Waged a secret war against the Allied Nations after the Martian Invasion.
>>
>>22692244
>>22692269
the main reason there is not much good press floating around about autoloaders is the most common ones, amx series and russian 64/72/80 series tanks have badly implemented ones, lack of space for the crew to work on them in confined turrets don't help either, one reason why the CATTB has a massive turret
>>
>>22692203
It's in here with the rest of it all. It's under "Other Planefag Writings", I think.

>most of WW2 Germany's noted soldiers were normal German army.
Yes, but there were still a number of notable soldiers among the Waffen SS. Not to defend them, but for historical accuracy.
Out of Germany's 42 tank aces, 16 of them were SS.
>>
>>22692309
and one of the best of them was probably the worst example of a soldier you could have if you like your soldiers to work within a proper command structure and combined arms group

>>
>>22692369
Can't say, really. Don't know too much about him, so I won't immediately say he got shot. I will say, though, that Heydrich gets something special coming to him on Christmas.
>>
>>22692352
unless tesla is still kicking around to tesla us up a railgun or we use some sort of magical engine to power/operate it, I don't think its within the eras technological means, but then again, little girls in underwear flying around and blowing shit up, so who knows...

Man, if the Russians can get a fucking FLYING CARRIER, I think the US can shell out the dosh to put a railgun on a tank.

And we know the Martians have knowledge of railgun tech because that's what they used to shoot their drop pods at Earth.
>>
>>22692431
Which should be good enough for us to find SOMEONE who can build us a railgun. Hell, slap a pair of 'em on there.
"Yea verily, though I charge through the valley of the shadow of death, I shall fear no evil, for I am driving a house-sized mass of "fuck you."

>>
>>22692440
well we already blew up a russian super heavy special fun times tank, why are we still stuck with tech from the 70's, I mean all thats really modern on our abrams is its fcs and stabilization, everything else is a decade or two old, and we're meant to be some fancy new combined arms special forces group? we need us some new wheels
