No news is good news, am I right? probably not, but it's the theory I've been running with lately and it's worked so far. haha!

Your ground crew, temporary as they are, wasted no time in helping you get strapped in while the chief and ordinance chief pulled streamers from weapons and displayed them for Merlin's count. Outside, the roar of engines continues unabated as the entire compliment of the base lurches skywards, forming up and heading north to join the wing from the kitty hawk in the attack. Inside the hangar, the high-pitched whine of striker turbines is overwhelmed by the far more powerful roar of your own jet's engines spinning up, the sound unmuffled by your still-open canopy.

You hit the canopy close toggle as Ice and Slider start rolling, taxiing to their spot just outside the hangar. “What's our load?” You ask over the intercom as you do so, clipping your helmet's umbilical lines into their port on the seat.

Instead of answering directly- she's juggling a half dozen things- Merlin just has one of your forward MFDs pop up with a display screen of your weapons stations. Your nacelle bays are loaded with a quartet of new-model agiles each, while your wings are slung with twelve AMRAAMS on twin rails and a further six agiles on triple rails. Your centerline bay holds a pair of...

You frown. “Merlin, what the hell are AIR-84s?” You ask, working your jaw around to pop your ears as the canopy seals.

“Modified Harpoon.” She says back, hurriedly. “No guidance package, improved warhead.”

“Improved warhead?” You ask, opening your throttles just a hair and taxiing away from your spot in the hangar.

“Mhmm.” She says. “Bigger. Closer to six hundred pounds of explosive.”

“Christ. What about guidance?” You ask, watching Maverick and Goose taxi by. Goose waves, and you raise one nomex-clad hand back as she passes.

“None.” Merlin says, still distracted. “The motor should burn quicker, so it'll fly faster, but it's going to fly in a straight line. There's a rocket setting on your HUD for it, but we should probably be pretty close.”

Katya starts rolling as soon as you do, shooting you a thumbs up as she passes you. You return the gesture, taxiing your fighter into the bright sunlight of the island, and watching as another pair of Phantoms claw their way skyward.

“Alright, listen up.” Ice breaks into your conversation across the squadron frequency. “The reds are shifting their flight track north, towards the kitty hawk's battlegroup. We've been asked to pour it on and intercept the group before they get in range to attack. ONI doesn't think they have the antiship missiles to do any real damage, but no one's real sure. Frank, you can burn longer and harder than any of us except Maverick, but I'm going to leave it up to you. Do you want to get out ahead and engage with the Kitty hawk's fighters, or do you want to go in with us?”

[x] “Splitting up is stupid. We'll stick with our group.”

“Splitting up hasn't proven to be the best plan ever.” You say, somewhat drily. “We'll stick with the squadron.”

“Point.” Ice says. “We've got the runway right after these-” Her voice is drowned out by the roar of a quartet of J79 engines on full afterburner as the last pair of Phantoms climbs off the runway.

One of the biggest advantages of flying with witches is not having to worry about turbulence in the air behind them on takeoff. At least, that's what you're always told- those little strikers just don't fuck up the air the same way your monster engines do. That's why you're always last off the ground- Ice and Slider lead out, rapidly climbing to altitude while you're still rolling. Above, your formation awaits- two squadrons of phantoms, hurriedly recalled from reserve at Davis-Monthan and crewed by air guard pilots, and a single squadron of marine hornets. Your own squadron is above and behind the marine hornets, tucked in between the Phantoms.

“Frank, C-can you promise me something?” Merlin asks quietly over the intercom.

In the early stages of Vietnam: yeah. Which is why the kill ratio was only 3:1 in the early going: Phantoms would fire all their missiles and then become sitting ducks for the MiG-17's guns in a dogfight.

Yep early models didn't have guns as the Air Force thought no more dogfighting as missiles took up the roll. They were wrong.

“That depends, Merlin.” You say, looking out over your formation. “Are you going to ask me what I think you are?”

“I... I don't want to leave the plane if anything happens.” She says, her voice barely audible.

You sigh. “That's what I thought you were going to say.”

it's not like you didn't expect this. Hell, you knew it was coming since DC. But if her mind's not in the game, Ice will send her home- that much has already been made abundantly clear to both of you.

And you could easily agree- how much would it really mean? Ejection is automated, after all- if you pull yours, her's will fire first anwyay. But you know, deep down, you'd be lying if you agreed.

[x] “I can't honestly promise you that, kiddo.”

As much as you want to do your best pirate impression to lighten the mood, you decide against it.

“Merlin, I can't honestly make you that promise. We're a combat crew, shit can happen.” You say, sadly. “What I can promise you is that, no matter what, I'm going to do everything I can to make sure we stay safe and together. You savvy?”

“I... what?” She asks, and you grin beneath your helmet.

“Trying out my pirate.” You say.

She giggles. “A-as long as you don't make me leave without you, I guess...” She says.

“Yeah, I promise I won't try to glide this thing back with both engines on fire into a tiny pocket of friendly troops and no way to make the airstrip.” You say with a grimace.

“That was the dumbest thing ever.” She says, flatly. “Our jet knew neither one of you were going to make it.”

Ahead of you, the conventional squadrons start to drift apart, spacing themselves out and giving themselves room to maneuver if they need to. The Phantoms, outclassed as they would be in a fight, drift back, their old sparrow missiles no defense against modern soviet fighters.

You kind of feel bad for them. They're ideally suited towards shooting up soviet shipping, and launching ground attack missions. This, though? This is pushing it. Their missiles can still kill, of course, but they're still pretty poor compared to modern ones.

Still, you're nearing the flying carrier- brief flashes in the sky ahead of you proving the fighting going on there. You're not sure what they are, but something tells you each small flash is another fighter dying.

“Merlin, see if you can't get us a datalink with an AWACS or something” You order, dropping yourself back from Ice and Slider by a few hundred meters and climbing just so slightly above them.

You wait a minute, then two, as Merlin tries to get you a good picture. Finally, frustrated, she gives up. “Something out there must have a really good ECM suite.” She says. “I can't even get the kitty hawk to respond, and even our radios are starting to degrade.”

“Outstanding.” you mutter beneath your breath. “What about our fancy sensors? The Tesla one?”

“Nothing. Well, nothing I'm sure of. It's supposed to be able to detect and process information on electrical sources in the air, kind of like those things a shark has? But there's nothing ahead of us but one great big blob. Radar's the same way, I bet.” She says.

“What about using magic?”

“Doesn't help, I already tried. Without a dedicated magic AWACS suite, I'm not going to have much luck. Only thing I can say for certainty is that the blob is below fifteen thousand feet.” She says.

Well, at least there's that.

[x] Climb above them! In from the sun!

Without a clear radar picture, your AMRAAMS are just pointless weight. You can fire them into the mess without a lock, of course, but there's about an even three-way split that they'll hit a soviet, hit one of the birds from the Kitty Hawk, or miss completely.

You slowly start climbing- no reason to zoom climb just yet, watching as the witches follow you and Katya up.

Passing twenty thousand feet, you see the faint glow of Katya's 'bubble'- the pressure shield they use at high altitude. Noticing you looking, she points ahead of you.

Down below, the twisting contrails of a dogfight etch themselves around a trio of massive shapes- two lozenge-shaped ships, and one huge manta-ray shaped one that has to be the carrier. Tracer streams reach out from the three of them, searching for American fighters. Below even them, the Kitty Hawk's battle group fights back, missiles and naval gunfire hammering upwards at the Soviet skyships.

Your heart thuds painfully in your chest, and it takes an iron effort of will to keep yourself from shaking with the adrenaline flooding your system.

“Let's get 'em!” Someone unidentifiable snarls, and your group starts to break up, diving into the fight.

You follow suit, rolling inverted and pitching your nose down into the furball raging far below.

[] Prioritize the Soviet fighters! Once they're gone, the Phantoms can go to town!
[] Prioritize the carrier! It's the main objective here!
[] Are those martian dreads? Hit them! They're a threat to the fleet and every fighter here!

[x] Prioritize the carrier! It's the main objective here!

The negative G force builds as your altimeter flashes down, your formation fragmenting around you as each wing pair selects a target and engages, relieving some of the pressure on the Kitty Hawk's fighters as the soviet pilots react to the sudden appearance of thirty more fighters and seven witches, one of the Russian fighters falling prey to Ice's new rifle almost instantly, it's pilot ejecting from his fragmenting craft.

The carrier flies in front of you, it's huge bulk lumbering through the sky, seeming oblivious to the fight around it. Still, someone, somewhere takes an interest in you, forcing you to break off your initial run before you even closed enough range to fire an agile, let alone one of your ship killing rockets. Automatic gunfire tears across the sky after you, though, thankfully, the soviet fighters are too tied up to take any shots at you.

You grunt at the sudden gees as you pull out of your dive, looking up long enough to watch a turret on one of the dreadnaughts flash, a corresponding explosion on the Kitty Hawk smearing across her flight deck. Smoke rises from the damaged carrier, evidence of other impacts.

“Frank! Frank we gotta go! There's a witch on our tail!” Merlin cries out.

You roll right just in time, sensing the tracers burn their way across the sky beneath you.

[x] Someone come get this bitch off me!

“Hey Katya! Little help?” You yell into your radio while tearing through the air, a few feet above the sea.

“She is too close! I cannot shoot without risking hitting you!” Katya cries.

“Shit.” You respond, banking hard to avoid ramming into a cruiser wreathed in smoke from her VLS launches.

“Hang on, I am coming!” She calls.

You grunt a response, trying to keep track of the soviet witch hell-bent on killing you and the ocean, which could probably give less of a fuck, but is just as happy to take your life all the same.

Another stream of tracers arcs over your canopy, causing you to instinctively pull away, frantically trying to dodge the witch's aim.

“Any time would be good!” You yell, rolling up and over the helicopter pad on a destroyer.

“Frank, on count of three, Climb!” Katya orders. “One... two.... three!”

You yank the stick hard back, trying to shove your throttles farther forward, to no avail. You can almost feel the soviet witch's glee- you made a fatal mistake.

1/2
>>
You look back in time to see that glee fade into terror as a pair of high-caliber, magically-enhanced slugs from Katya's BAR hammer through her left leg, shredding the striker, and the meat beneath it. She's still alive, you think, but her flying days are over for sure- her left striker, sputtering and flaming, falls away separate from the rest of her.

“Nice shot, Katya!” You crow, leveling out and taking brief stock of the situation. The Kitty Hawk's crippled, no doubt- you can see the gaping rents in her flight deck from here. She'll spend months in the dry dock for sure.

The rest of her battlegroup's less beat up, though the pair of cruisers show plenty of damage themselves.

Above you, one dreadnaught is trailing smoke and listing, while the other has taken some hits, but doesn't look to be too badly damaged. The Carrier's in similar straights- some damage, a few streamers of smoke trailing hits, but nothing critical looking. The dogfight has begun to thin out, though your phantom jocks have paid a frightful price, and the hornets look to be down more than a few fighters themselves.

Actually, that really just depends on the goodwill of the OP.
planefag always plays social interactions out to get Young into the deepest possible shit, no matter how reasonable the decision (Not that /tg/ wouldn't happily ride that train).
GhostDivision simply does not pull that kind of stuff and presents people around Fronk as way more reasonable, which makes it easier not to go full retard or accidentally run into problems.

Clear the fighters off to simplify the combat space. Taking out the carrier is a tempting 2-for-1, but in the short term, the enemy fighters are still a threat. When we do get around to attacking the carrier/dreads, Boom and Zoom, since we are basically doing an unguided rocket attack against a ground target, just higher up.

I doubt the carrier blowing up would magically make the other enemies give up and those lost pilots? Not NPCs.
>>
>>22613183
Big priority target =/= Glory hound.

The Carrier is probably the source of the jamming. It is also the logistical trail for the fighters. It is spewing a wall of AA flak.

It is also easier to get rid of 2 unguided harpoons than ten or so AAMs. which would then probably work again once the jamming's gone.

Carrier was a perfectly legitimate course of action.

[x] Hit the carrier! There's not enough of those escorts to chase us off anymore!

There's not enough escorts to keep you off the carrier anymore, and those dreadnaughts are busily dueling with the ships below.

Fortuitously, your brief flight from the soviet witch put you in a great position for a run on the carrier- the shot won't be the easiest you've ever made, but it's not going to be the hardest, either.

Still, Tracer fire reaches down for you, complicating the shot, and you're only able to get one of your two harpoon rockets off, instead of both. You're almost mesmerized by it's arrow-straight smoke trail, the big, heavy missile scorching a path across the sky.

It impacts up near the intakes on the carrier's port side engines, causing a pair of painfully bright secondary explosions. The carrier lists in the air, it's wing dipping as black smoke pours from the destroyed engine bank.

You dive away from the big ship, evading the sudden interest of several gun emplacements, mentally setting up your second run. The Soviet fighters are almost all gone, and the remaining soviet witches are sorely outclassed- the two or three that remain struggling vainly against the numbers.

Still, the dreadnaughts are proving to be every bit the equal of their reputation- chasing off fighters with deadly accurate maser fire, automatic gunfire from soviet weapons added in some refit, and the occasional missile launch.

The least damaged of the two's underside maser turrets swivel, tracking the stricken Kitty Hawk below. As you watch, it fires, hitting the carrier somewhere amidships.

A pair of small secondary explosions are followed seconds later by a catastrophic detonation as her magazine goes up, simply obliterating the center of the ship. The remaining sections, pitiful remnants of the once mighty ship, bob briefly in the cold water before sinking like stones.

We focus fire and take out the more valuable enemy asset first.
Incidentally, I really hope that our ridiculous 12 AMRAAM'a and 12 agiles can do something to those dreads, since they are probably the source of the jamming (historic martian ECM+ECM makes sense on support ships) and likely more heavily armored than the carrier.
>>
>>22613229

Yes, thats the OOC reasoning but I expect Fronk will get some stern talking to about this.

>>22613244

Yes it is.

Great bit target. Surrounded by escort dreads and significant fighter cover.

There are two ways to do it:
1) Task a dedicated strike element to breakthrough the layered defences and take it out
2) Engage the defences and peel it back layer by layer

A single fighter is not a strike element with a good chance of breaking through a furball and multi-layered defences to take our a high value target, no matter who he/she is.

[x] Continue the second run. This thing dies, now.

That carrier is the entire lynchpin of the Soviet Alaskan offensive. Strategically, the dreadnoughts are a drop in the bucket compared to it.

Plus we have a second carrier group in the area that can pick up the slack from Kitty Hawk's loss.

Carrier's not dead. Limping, but not dead. Anybody who designed a flying carrier that'd go down after losing 1 engine wouldn't last long in Soviet Russia
>>
>>22613381
Exactly. We can afford to lose a standard carrier, compared to Russia's super advanced flying one. Combined with the loss of one of their two supersubs and they'll have zero power projection in the Pacific.
>>
[x] Revenge! Kill that dreadnaught!
>>
>>22613381
There's a difference between industrial warfare, which is war of production, and tunnel visioning in on the big wallowing target that'll be a sitting duck without it's escorts while letting said escorts wipe out your people.
The difference between lives SPENT and lives WASTED.
>>22613419
The flying carrier will not magically warp away if we take time to peel it's defenses back.
>>
>>22613414
Not 1 engine, but its port engine bank.
It's not going to crash yet, but it's definitely listing, and lost significant maneuverability and top speed.
>>
>>22613419
Which in turn raises the likelihood of Japan jumping them. This would be, at least for the current war, a good thing.
>>
>>22613381
The carrier is replaceable, yes.

The 5600 prewar experienced crew that manned it, on the other hand, are not.
>>
>>22613369

Look, let's be honest, we were sent into battle with a load of useless AMRAAMs that we couldn't use for the jamming and two huge anti-ship missiles weighing us down, and the whole purpose of this mission was to shoot down that fucking carrier.

I don't think we've done anything worthy of reprimand, except maybe not living up to our superhero reputation.
>>
>>22613434
If we take time, we make it even more likely that it and the dreadnaughts slag the entire carrier group. Also, if its escorts are that badly denuded without impairing the carrier's ability to run away, the carrier is going to fly off while the dreads cover its retreat.

>>
>>22613474
They were trying to cover our approach. The Phantoms were only armed with sparrows, and the witches can't carry heavy ordnance. No clue what the Hornets were carrying.

As far as I know, Fronk is the ONLY fighting in that group that has any decent chance of hurting the carrier. The rest are there to protect him and draw fire.

>>
>>22613485
>thousands

That thing has maybe 200. At most.

And the loss of a supercarrier, presumably with all hands, is a huge blow to the effectiveness of the Navy. There are a max of 12-13 of them worldwide. The only one in Alaska just blew up.

If you are going to throw away a supercarrier, you had damn well get something good in return. A single example of aerial force projection owned by a country that does not need to project aerial power beyond land in its current war does not pass that muster.
>>
>>22613551
We only have two harpoons. ASSUMING we only need one of those to take down a dread, then we'd have nothing to actually down the carrier with.

>>
>>22613574
>A single example of aerial force projection owned by a country that does not need to project aerial power beyond land in its current war does not pass that muster.
Although it's almost undoubtedly a diversion, knocking out this carrier removes just about ALL air power projection that isn't land-based...period don't know the status of the Varyag-class in this setting. While not being a knockout blow, that is a serious issue for the Reds. This means that at best they're fighting on "neutral" territory (Europe/Asia) and at "worst" they're fighting on their own territory (though I hesitate to ever call a land invasion of Russia a bad situation for the Russian military)
>>
>>22613522
>>22613532

So it comes back down to: 1 plane, 1 chance, 2 munitions and no backups.

And yes there is another method. AIM-7s in the gulf war had something of a 40% kill probability. And those were usually against the older aircraft of the IRAF. Using them against the more advanced non-export craft of the Russians? I'm expecting that to plummet even further.

The Phantoms could have held back and mass-launched missiles at the flying carriers and no CIWS could have stopped all of them.

This also has the not so slight benefit of having Phantoms which can't turn to save their lives NOT get into a furball.
>>
>>22613608

>>22613574
It is when it's supporting an offensive that's landing troops on your soil. The entire point of this mission was to kill it so it can't provide air cover to supply and reinforcement convoys to Alaska. Plus it kills any chance of any future offensives.

Plus the Kitty Hawk isn't the only carrier in Alaska. The Montana is in the area as well.
>>

It's a huge slow target that can probably take multiple AMRAAM hits.

Have Merlin send a brace of our AMRAAMs into the holes we punched in the carrier. They'll work much better now that they can hit the chocolatey center directly instead of scratching the crunchy coating.

No, that doesn't 100% imply that the Montana is a carrier. Battle groups can be built around any capital ship, battleships included. Given that it's 1989, it'd make sense that the US had reactivated at least one of its old battlewagons.

No fighters. 24 anti-air missiles remaining. Carriers are generally lightly armored.

We could try launching a swarm of agiles at the carrier to save a harpoon for a dread. Magic and radar are jammed, not IR. Take out the second engine bank that way.

Heck, we could ask Merlin to use the inertial guidance system on the AMRAMM's to turn them into defacto unguided missiles, and try salvoing them behind the Harpoon. [x] Continue the second run. This thing dies, now.

“This thing dies.” You snarl to no one in particular, looking at the floating debris field below.

You're an item of interest now, but with most of the AA directed at you, the remaining Phantoms and Hornets are able to wreak a terrible vengeance. The Kitty Hawk’s few remaining fighters seem single-minded, their guns and AAMs hammering the dreadnaught that killed their carrier.

Your second run, from above and behind, puts you in a spectacular position. The big harpoon flies true, smashing into the second large engine bank, destroying all the massive jets there in a single explosion.

The soviet carrier, already trailing hundreds of points of smoke, noses over, it's remaining engines unable to overcome it's titanic weight. You watch it all the way down, secondary explosions occasionally ripping away small chunks of the huge craft.

It impacts with the water a fair few miles from the nearest ship, raising a huge plume of water and steam. It's bulk belied it's speed- the thing was coming down at a pretty good clip, and you can see bits and piece of debris tear away as it slams into the unforgiving Bering sea.

“Merlin, is that jamming out?” You ask, eyeballing the now damaged dreadnaughts as they turn east.

“Some of it. But... we've got two big groups of contacts approaching. One's from the east, one's from the south!” She says.

“How long?” You ask. She knows what you mean.

“F-frank, remember your promise....” She says.

“How long, Merlin?” You ask again.

“The eastern group will be in range in about five minutes. The southern group has us in two, if they're Soviet. There's a surface element behind the southern group, too.”

Take out the Dreads. If that drops the jamming, then we stick around until we've used up or Agiles and AMRAAMs, then we RTB for a reload.

I think the surface group might be the Montana, since we didn't see another big-name American ship with the Kitty and it's unlikely that the US would station their two big naval assets out of mutual support range. In any case, attempt to ID the southern group since it's closest and we need intel to determine just how badly we are fucked. Try seeing if we can contact AWACS now that the jamming is weakened, if not...well, we probably have the best RIO, radar, and speed in the air right now, we can use it to scout. (We don't have stealth because of the external racks)

[x] Hit those dreads! Two minutes is plenty of time.

“Two minutes is long enough.” You say, angling in at the dreadnought that killed the Kitty Hawk.

The fighters and witches swarming around it have opened up several holes, and it's damaged, with plenty of guns out, but it's starting to look like the thing just won't die. Below you, the surface elements are adding what firepower they can, but most of their weaponry was expended before you got on site.

“Damnit! We just can't kill this thing!” someone says over the radio.

“Unless one of us wants to ram it.” Another pilot says.

“Ah hell no. save that shit for the storybooks, huh?” A third answers.

“Sparrows didn't do a damn thing.” one of the surviving Phantom weapons operators notes.

“AMRAAMS didn't do much either.” A hornet driver agrees. “Hey Spellcaster! You got any of those big fukkin missiles left?”

>>
>>22614499
If a Firefox shows up it's only fair that we get an XF-34A Dreamstar to fight it in.
>>
“Only had two.” You say. “Nobody has anything?”

“Nothin... what the shit!?” Someone yells, as the dreadnought staggers under three massive impacts- far larger than the ones caused by your harpoons.

The second dreadnought turns, relatively undamaged, heading east, towards the group coming in from that direction.

The first dreadnaught, now ripped open, begins falling from the sky, slowed only marginally by the martian tech in it's hull. With such a glaring opening, your fellow pilots turn on it with gleeful abandon, losing one more of their number to it's guns before it's confirmed dead- falling into the water in a far less dramatic impact, sinking beneath the waves. The few survivors- mixed soviets and martians, it looks like, aren't a priority for rescue.

“Hello American friends! Ten thousand apologies we were not here earlier, one of our boilers was damaged and our speed was reduced. Can any of you guide our fire onto the other dreadnaught?” says a lightly accented man's voice.

[] “Glad to see you. Standby for gunfire direction.”

[x] “Glad to see you. Standby for gunfire direction.”

“Glad to see you folks!” You respond, noting that the southern fighter group has diverted to intercept the eastern incoming fighters. “Standby for gunfire direction.”

You were never trained in it, but thankfully, Ice war- the navy academy being as bound by tradition as almost any other naval institution, and witches are traditionally spotters.

Adjusting onto a flying target is a new challenge for ice, but she manages- the fleeing dreadnaught wiped from the sky almost as if by god's eraser- in this case, represented by nine eighteen inch shells- which is impressive in and of itself, since that kind of accuracy is the kind of shit they tell stories about.

“American pilots and witches! The Amagi is available to recover if you are low on fuel!” A female voice cuts in. “However, we would appreciate help in dealing with these last soviet dogs. We would very much appreciate it if the Eagle would fly with us as well!”

“The eagle?” Merlin says. “Think she means you?”

“If she means Me, she means you too, Merlin.” You say.

“Frank, we're out of ammo. If you go in with them, it's only going to be them on your wing.” Ice says. “I'm not letting Katya follow you in with just a combat knife, no matter how much she protests. Plus we're all way low on juju- we'll have to recover on the Amagi.”

[] “That's fine. They asked, and I've got plenty of ammo left. I'm in.”

This. We have lots of AMRAAMS that need new homes.

As for new thread, it is up to my fine sir. If you are up to it, lets do it!

inb4 "make sure to come back this time"

If you're up for it

[x] “So do you want me to pack it in with you, then?”
If nothing else, we should be watching our fuel.
Maybe if the Amagi can refuel and re-arm, but better not to push our luck this time.

Hey would not the Japanese have some spare ammo for Katya?
>>
>>22614961
If you are up for it, I'm up for a new thread.

I doubt they'd have the right caliber on-hand.

Doesn't she have a gun that only she really uses?

Given it's rechambered in some obscure .400-ish round, unlikely.
>>
There needs to be some quirp to Ice and/or Katya.

Protect our ammo-less, magic-low witches as best as we can.

A (fictional) .400-06 wildcat cartridge based on the .405 Winchester, specifically.
>>
>>22615105
Might have a spare FN MAG or MINIME
>>
>>22615155
Well, we know the Japanese in this 'verse love their domestics, wouldn't surprise me if they had their own set of calibers they rely on.
>>
>>22615171
Perhaps, but their Francophilic tendencies with infantry arms might mean one of those Frog rounds ends up getting used. On the other hand, both the Stg 44 and MG 42 were badmotorscooters, so they might have licensed or knockeed those off.
>>
>>22615207

Is STANAG not a thing in this universe?

>Bullpup StG44 in Arisaka 8mm produced by Tokyo gas & Electric

*shudder*
>>
>>22615221
It could, and possibly might be.
>>
>>22615089

Couldn't find it.

And seeing as Fronk is again diving into combat, thought it might have been more fitting.
>>
>>22615221

Maybe? There's enough powerful third-party powers around to make it interesting in terms of standardisation.
>>
>>22615221
Japan isn't part of NATO, and STANAG is a NATO thing.
>>
On the other hand, if normal SWQ is canon, Sean getting The Hero of Japan to used American iron might change things.

Now I am getting visions of AR-18s and 1911s as issue weapons. All of my boner.

Well. That's one explanation.

Fuck George Sullivan and his stupid fucking insistence on that stupid fucking aluminum/steel composite barrel!

what would be interesting is if 5.56x45mm wasn't the assault rifle standard and we have something like 6.8mm.

But I guess since the US is the dominant Western superpower, Japan would have to plan to accept whatever the US uses.

Hmm...wonder if their Type 89 is in service by now...

changing my vote to >>22615316

Make sure Merlin's okay with it
>>
>>22615319
Well, in our timeline the Type 89 entered service in '89, so there are probably at least a few units using them.

and new thread!

Welp, that makes sense.
