I head up to the innkeeper and order a tankard of ale, I maybe be off the clock but I'm never off duty.

I quickly take in the surroundings, theres a few recruits relaxing by the fireplace.

Towards the cellar theres a group of elves, not something you see everyday. Guess the alliance talks are going better then I thought.

>Go over and sit with the recruits
>Take a seat in the corner where I can observe everything discreetly
>other?

>You are Captain Varnus head of the city guard.
>>
You know what we really need? We need a Sam Vimes... I say we head out of town looking for the first enormous cesspool of a city we can find. City Watch is a lot more interesting than this small town stuff.
>>
OH goodie! its that time of the day!

the city of jorrun is quite big, think of it as the trade central of the south
>>
>>22564899
on a side note, do you really want to move to another city with your daughter and start a new life from scratch?
>>
>>22564977
Yes, if necessary. What is the largest city on the continent?
>>
>>22565016
The largest city on the continent you're on would be Jorrun, the second largest is Qo'Pral which lies in the north.

You could head to the coastal city of Tarsus and take a boat of the western islands where the capital city of Gorgul lies.
>>
>>22565041
On to Gorgul!
Come, daughter, a better life awaits us my darling!
>>
>>22565041
Wait... which city is the most likely to harbor a Samuel Vimes like figure? A drunk captain of the guard who has more honor and sense of duty than he knows what to do with?

>>22565066

>>
>>22565089
You captain varnus would be that person, cept the drunk part unless you start drinking heavily when off the clock.
>>
>>22565123
Dammit... ok, lets start drinking then. Do we also have a ruler of the city who is intelligent to a fault, has absolutely no vices from what it seems, and wants to heel this dog of a city with schemings along?

Also we need a Carrot. lets start drinking and talk to the recruits.

>drink with the recruits it is then

I head over to the recruits and take a seat in a vacant chair, I set down my tankard of ale and relax a bit listening to their chatter.

>what should we talk about with the recruits?

>>22565215
Ask the recruits how training as been, then get a little too drunk and start relaying stories of the field, chases through fogged allies, fist fights with criminals, that kind of thing. Then get piss drunk and wander outside in a stupor.
>>
>>22565215
Act the amicable but knowledgeable captain
"Well, you young bloods have a fair bit of learning ahead don't you?"
Attempt the friendliest grin we can attempt.
"Why don't you fine young examples try something? Look around this establishment, point out to me any possible incongruities in the patrons, anything amiss at all."
Put our hands together and lean on the table expectantly
>>
>>22565262

>>
>>22565280
Agreed.
>>
>>22565250
>>22565262
>i'll work these two together

"Well, you young bloods have a fair bit of learning ahead don't you?" I grin a little, "Hopefully sargeant Orz ain't working you to the bone" The recruits laugh at this.

"Well sir you should have seen Jackson when he was asked to drag around a log for a whole day, after he broke a sword on a training post." I smile "Well that sure would have been a sight to see."

I take a large gulp of my ale and look at the recruits "So, lets put your training to the test. Look around the establishment, point out to me any possible incongruities in the patrons, anything that seems out of place at all."

One of the recruits looks over in the corner, "See that orc over there? His eyes have been shifting around as if looking for something the entire time he's been here. The past thirty minutes he's been eyeing the waitress with a very keen eye." I nod and take in the information

Another recruit pipes up, "You probably wouldn't notice it at first, but the dwarf up there has several contraband items on him including a vial of necrotic poison. Something that is VERY illegal in this city." I give a wide grin.

"Good to see our teaching is still up to par."

>wat do?
>>
>>22565448
The orc is acting shifty
But dat fukken dwarf is in for it
"Lean in close kids."
Lean forward conspiratorially
"Our short friend over there is just too suspicious to ignore, I'm going to pretend to head to the latrine, and cover the exit. Two of you pretend to go to the bar and wait behind him, the rest move straight up on him, his short little legs won't get him away. I have questions for him."
>>
>>22565448
Use the ancient fighting technique of "Go chat it up with the dwarf then break out tankard over his head". We walk over like the typical drunk and talk slurred before the head smashing. Then we take him to for a night in the cells and confiscate his contraband. If he has more than say 100$ equivalent we will interrogate him because he's probably a dealer.

Also we do this ourselves, show the recruits what's what.
>>
>>22565498
Actually that's a point, we should probably show them how its done before we throw them in it
Ignore my plan, try this
>>
>>22565498
>time for our mighty tankard-fu
"Now that the younger generation of guards has shown me what they can do I believe it's time for me to show them what the older generation can do." I down the last of my ale and take a seat next to the dwarf.

"Innkeeper, another round." I turn to the dwarf, "Don't get many of your folk around here, may I ask what drew you to our town?"

He gives a small grin "'Ell it ain't yer drink T'ats fer damn sure." He snorts "Tastes like elf sweat, why can't any human owned taverns ever 'ave any good ale?"

The dwarf raises up his own mug to meet mine, just as they are about to meet I swing with all of my might and catch him straight in the face.

He's knocked unconcious by the sheer strength of the blow, I look over to the recruits and beckon them to me "And that's how to take in suspects who are in clear violation of the law."

One of the recruits lets out a huge belly laugh and slaps me on the shoulder, "Classic textbook take down captain, we'll drag this sorry sod off to the cells where he can stew for a month or two."

I smile, i may be off the clock but duty never ends.

>i'll do a compromise of these two
"When you head in to fill the correct paperwork put it on my desk, I'll fill in my account and get it filed away." The recruits nod and two of them pick up the dwarf and drag him out towards the barracks.

I decide to head over to the orc who noticed the whole spectacle, he's breaking a small sweat when I get near him. Perhaps he's hiding something?

"So what's your story friend?" The orc looks nervous, "I'm not in trouble am I? I swear I have nothing to do with the dwarf."

Well isn't he chatty?

>tell him that I believe him but ask him why he's been eyeing the waitress intensly for the past thirty minutes.
>Eye with sceptism, but ask him why his in town.

>>

>tell him that I believe him but ask him why he's been eyeing the waitress intensly for the past thirty minutes.
Be friendly, we want to see if he slips and we catch him in a lie
>>
>>22566000

"Don't worry I believe you, but my recruits tell me you've been eyeing the waitress for quite a while. Care to share why?" A haunted look appears on his face "A few months ago I was traveling with a warband, we happened across a burnt and pillaged town." He takes a large gulp of ale to calm his nerves "We weren't expecting any survivors, but i heard a quiet moan from some rubble. Inside was a young woman not much older then the waitress, same body type as well." He looks down into his tankard "We picked her up and rode as fast as we could towards Jorrun, our goal originally was to take out a bandit stronghold in the north. However we've always strived to save the victims of their crimes."

I nod "A noble goal, you have honour my friend."
He snorts "honour means shit to the people who suffer under the bandits every day, but the waitress reminds me so much of the young lady we rescued."

He shivers slightly "I still remember the smell of burning flesh and the piles of dead bodies in the village."

>wat do?
>>

"Sounds like you've seen some shit, so have I. But why have you seemed so nervous? You've been looking back and forth like a startled cat my friend, are you in danger?"

"Sounds like you've seen some shit, so have I. But why are you so nervous? You've been looking back and forth like a startled cat my friend, are you in danger?" His eyes widens for a second, he sighs and downs the rest of his ale "You noticed huh? Guess it's out of the bag as they say."

He nods his head as if hes decided on something. "I've heard about you, you're captain Varnus Corr." Guess my reputation preceeds me, I nod "Two weeks ago someone contacted me about a possible plant by the bandits in the outskirts, they told me to keep a lookout in this tavern around nighttime as the plant seemingly likes to go here for drinks every now and then."

A bandit infiltrator? In MY city? "And have you noticed anything?" He nods "A merchant comes around every two days and picks up a satchel, he sits down for exactly three drinks and leaves. Never talks to anyone."

>Ask him to involve me in this, city guard behind him should help him out right?
>I have enough on my plate, leave him to solve this himself but with my blessing. A dead bandit is a good bandit.
>>
>>22566409
We ain no coward! he needs help and a bandit infiltrator is another potential danger for our daughter

>Dotn ask him, GET involved

>>22566409

"Well friend, looks like you've just gained the aid of the city guard, whether you want it or not."

"Well friend, looks like you've just gained the aid of the city guard, whether you want it or not?"

I pat him on the back and order another round of ale for us both, "So he's due tonight then?"

He nods "He's yet to come in but he should arrive any minute now. When he gets here, act like you don't even notice him. We need him to get complacent and sloppy."

We sit and small talk while drinking our ale and wait for the merchant to arrive, out of the corner of my eye I notice a smaller then average fat merchant picking up a satchel.

I quietly tap the orc on his knuckles to get his attention, while keeping my hand on the table I point towards the merchant and quietly whisper "That him?"

He nods "Yes, once he's done with his three drinks we sneak out and follow him. Remember we can't be caught."

After having three drinks the merchant leaves, we tail him slowly while sticking to the shadows.

After a while the merchant arrives at a warehouse, he knocks five times and says something.

The door opens and he enters inside, the orc looks to me "So how do you want to handle this? We could sneak in from the window, we could also try and sneak around the back and see if there is an entrance there."

>try and go through the window near the roof?

The orc nods, "Around the back it is then."

We quietly make our way to the backside of the warehouse down an alley, I hear muffled voices from inside the warehouse.

Behind the building we see a door which is ajar, there's light coming from inside. Smells like someone is cooking something.

I could ask the orc to have a look, he seems the sneaky sort. Or I could go myself.

"Stay here, I'm going to have a small look inside before we do anything." The orc nods

I sneak up to the door and push it open slightly, inside there's a man a little bit shorter then me focused on a pot of stew. I could probably take him out silently, otherwise we would need some kind of distraction to get past him.

>Take him out silently?

I decide a distraction would be optimal, I signal the orc to move up next to me and I pick up a rat.

I have a peek inside to look for an opening, I find it and I let the rat run inside. The cooks attention immedietly darts to the rat "Goddamn pest, c'mere so i can squish ye!"

Guess that passes for attention these days, we sneak in and head deeper into the warehouse.

"Over there, small staircase we can get a vantage point from." I nod and follow him up, once we get there we see a small gathering around a table.

"Our plans with the Qo'Pral ambassador seems to have failed, should have figured with that chicken shit noble." a gruff voice, I can pick out a few figures from where we sit. A high ranking templar by the name Logarn Rynn is standing on the far side, next to him stands Antoinette De Aille head of the sisterhood.

On the southern end of the table is the fat merchant "Well, good thing we have other plans in the works isn't it?"

I dodge under a swing from the last templar in the room, he tries to bring his shield down on my head but he's far too late. I stab him in the heart and he promptly falls to the floor while letting a bloodied gurgle out.

I cut my bindings off and head out into the hallway, shit which way to the orc? as i turn my head I see more templars coming in from every side, Heh I like these odds.

I put on a show that would make most knights envious of me, the first templar charges at me with his halberd and goes for a low swing.

I jump over it and swing my sword around catching a templar coming in from the side taking his head off, keeping up the momentum i take out the halberd user aswell. Another templar swings a flail at me and barely misses, too close for comfort. I bring my sword around in an upward arc and I get him in the side, not enough to kill him but it should take him out.

"Come on you pansies, I've fought tougher girls then you lot!" I should have kept my mouth shut as I take a shield to the face hard enough to knock me out.

I wake up bound to the table this time with no blindfold, I see a pale skinned bald man standing by a table humming as he mixes together various concoctions.

I pull on the bindings a little to check if there might be a weak point that I exploit or perhaps if I could muscle my way out of this, sadly theres none to be found.

"And what are you going to do now, inject strange concotions into me to see what happens?" The man turns around with a psychotic smile on his face "Why, that's exactly what I'm going to do! You know, alchemy rarely makes any significant breakthroughs unless we involve human subjects. Which is what you're here for!" Shit, I've got to get out of here.

Still my little escape attempt should have given the rest of the people held here some courage for another potential go. I just hope Williams is getting the guard together to search for me.

"Oh I'm going to have so much fun with you captain, and when I'm done with you the templars have decided to take your daughter in for experiments after the little stunt you pulled." I immedietly turn my head to him "When I get out of here I'm going to break you in two, Slowly and painfully. And I'm going to enjoy every second of it."

He cackles with an insane laughter, "THATS THE SPIRIT CAPTAIN! Now have a taste of this!" He forces a bottle into my mouth, the horrid liquid goes down as if someone is trying to poor acid into my throat. I nearly blow chunks at the taste of it.

I look down on my hands and find massive paws with claws to match, on the wall I find a mirror to check myself out in. I gasp as I take in the changes to my body, it has changed to that of a large bipedal bear.

I flex the muscles in various areas around my body, every single part of my being oozes physical strength. I turn around slightly and see a small nubby tail. Wait I have a tail?

I give it a small waggle and chuckle a bit, Tira is going to have a field day with this if she can recognize me.

I make my way out to the other cells and bellow out "Do not fear my appearance fellow prisoners, I am Captain Varnus of the city guard and I am here to get you all out"

One by one I let every single prisoner out, seems like the church has been a bunch of busy little bunnies. I release many magic users and non humans from the cells.

I give a small chuckle "Looks like saving my strength paid off afterall"

She'll know what I'm talking about" I turn to the others "As for the rest of you arm yourself with what you can, we are going to arrest the whole lot of these people. Kill only if you have to, however Antoinette De Aille and Logarn Rynn are mine." They nod and run off to loot and scavenge whatever they can find.

I charge through the taking it off at its hinges holding it up as a makeshift shield, around I see a few of the prisoners fall to arrows. Urghast has taken cover behind a wall and pops his head out every so often to let loose an arrow from a bow he found.

I hear grunts of pain as I trample over them like a force of nature, after about 30 yards I throw the door at some archers firing at us from the walls, takes out a few of them. Good don't need pointy things sticking out of me when I'm done tearing things to shreds.

I take in my surrounds as I keep charging towards the cathedral, We are in a large courtyard. Up on the walls archers are falling like flies to assorted arrows and fireballs being tossed their way by archers and magi alike on my side.

I crash through the doors to the cathedral to see Logarn Rynn standing with 18 templars by a quick headcount. "So it seems that the captain of the guard truly is a beast."

I let loose a deafening roar as I charge into the first templar with my shoulder launching him into a nearby pillar, I swear my massive paws around taking off the head of another. My vision starts to run red, and my vision goes hazy for the next while.

After a few moments my vision clears, between my massive arms I have Lorgarn clenched in a massive bear hug and not one of the friendly ones either.

"Logarn Rynn, you are hereby placed under arrest. You will be judged by the court of nobles for your crimes against the city, her people and our potential ally of Qo'Pral." His eyes light up "Than-" I quickly shut him up with a blow to the temple. After all, sniveling worms do not talk.

I take in the scene around me, bodies are strewn all over the place in various states of dismemberment. I somehow managed to get one of the templars impaled on the corner of the altar at the back.

I drag Logarns sorry unconcious carcass outside, once there I look around.
out of all the people I let out, only seven survived. Urghast being one of the remaining survivors, He limps towards me clutching an arrow wound in his side.

"I would say this was an honourable battle if these people were orcs, but they are not and this wasn't. A damn slaughterhouse this turned out to be." I nod "These people will be given proper burial rites and their remaining personal effects delivered to their families, we will let them know that justice is done." I see one of the corporals of the guard heading towards me, "C-Captain, is-is that you? By the heavens what have they done to you?"

I chuckle a bit "Well look on the positive side, my daughter always did want a giant teddy bear to hug when sleeping. But on a more serious note, every member of the church is to be apprehended and arrested. I want to know whos side they are on and whether or not they had anything to do with the imprisonment of magic users and non human races." He nods "Yes sir, by the way. As I reach my home I notice I now have to crouch slightly to get through the door, right so I'll have to fix that some day soon to accomodate my new frame.

Inside I stand up to my full height, much better. I look around and Immediatly spot my daughter, "mr. bear have you seen my papa?" A slight pang of pain shoots through my heart, of course she wouldn't be able to recognize my new form. "It's me Tira, a bad man... changed me into this." She looks up a shocked expression on her face, not expecting my voice to come out of this form. "Papa?" I kneel down and open my arms, she runs into them and hugs me tightly and cries into the fur on my leg "Papa! I was so scared! Sister Catherine hid me from the mean church people when you didn't come home two days ago, h-have the bad men been p-pun-put in the naughty corner?" I chuckle at her reaction.

"Yes, the bad men have been put away. They won't be able to hurt you." I look up to sister Catherine "I can't thank you enough for this Catherine, and this hurts my heart so much to say but I'm afraid you'll need to accompany me to the guardhouse. Everyone whos associated with the church and sisterhood is currently being brought in for questioning." She nods though with a sad expression on her face "It was no bother, I look to Tira as if she was my own daughter."

I stand up "Tira go pack an overnight bag, we'll be having a sleepover at papa's workplace." She nods and quickly runs to our bedroom where I can hear her pack various things, I turn back to sister catherine "Don't worry, personally I do not suspect you of anything. I'll make sure you have an actual bed to sleep in and you'll be served actual hot food and not the sloppy goo we feed the other prisoners with." She nods and thanks me.

I go outside and see Williams standing next to the door, she salutes me "I heard everything you said inside captain, this is a messy situation." I shake my head "They should have known better, still you did good Williams."

Do we have any contacts within the Trade Union?
Some of the merchants were apparently caught up in this; we'll need to have our informants and such watching them, see if any prepare for a quick getaway after this.

Then, we head over to the Guardhouse and meet with the nobles about this.

Is there any kind of Magi Academy or some sort of Wizard Guild that we can talk with? They are NOT going to be happy with the Church kidnapping their members, and we need a magical forensics expert to check the basement alchemy lab we were in.

Tira comes running back "All packed papa!" I nod and lock the house up, then turn around and put Tira on my now massive shoulders.

On the way there Tira seems enamoured with my new looks and height, laughing as she holds her arms out as if she was a bird.

We arrive at the barracks and the recruits station outside salute me, "Everything is as ordered sir." I nod "Good work, see the sister behind me? I want her treated like royalty, she is the reason why my daughter isn't caught up in this mess."

They nod and take Catherine inside, I step into my office and sit on the floor next to my desk. Guess I'll need a new chair, and armour too. Wonder if I could get some platemail of somekind fitted out for me and perhaps a weapon of some kind.

I look over to Williams, "Right I need a couple of things now. First, send for a magical forensices expert to check the basement alchemy lab that I was in. Second, get papers ready for Urghast of the Plainsrunner clan to join the guard. Third, have our informants within the trade union keep an eye out for ANYTHING suspicious. Fourth get a message sent to the magical university of Yama Raskov, they'll want to know what the church has been doing and make sure you request a representative. Fifth, get me a secretary. And finally, I need some rest so wake me when the nobles get here. Make sure Tira has everything she needs while I'm asleep."

She nods and gets to work. I lean back and close my eyes, sleep slowly takes me.
